Sandalf was also gaming in LotRO, working through the intro for Man as a Lore-master. : )
[4:18 PM]

Starcraft 2: the usual suspects that I am aware of: Fangorn, Eowyn, and Faramir have been playing it. I think Real Floppa also (current name grandson is using, been through at least three).  : )

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:18 PM
has also been doing SC2 co-op recently

Varda — Today at 4:18 PM
Other gaming is going on too,  but that's what I have for reports.
Ahh, neato!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:18 PM
no room for a fake floppa

Varda — Today at 4:18 PM
heh
[4:19 PM]
Hope you enjoyed it. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:19 PM
oh, bit of gaming news, will insert that after I'm done here

Varda — Today at 4:19 PM
Okie dokie
[4:19 PM]
Get to play any Eve Online, Pallando? And don't get yourself killed if you're in the middle of something right now!
[4:21 PM]
On to...
[4:21 PM]

top

Tolkien!

[4:21 PM]
I was looking at contracts. : )
[4:22 PM]
I didn't make it through the books in time to find the one, I think about Frodo's ironclad inheritance? for hobbits.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:22 PM
Bilbo's contract with the Dwarves.

Varda — Today at 4:23 PM
The one between Thorin and Bilbo is a short letter, only a few paragraphs. In the movie, it was huge and I think the idea was based on the other.
Thorin's was under the mantlepiece where Gandalf expected Bilbo to dust. : )
They had already left.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:23 PM
some eve, yes. some fleets. minmatar liberation celebrations are ongoing. cal/gal fighting over ath
many interesting things

Varda — Today at 4:24 PM
Sounds like a lot!

[4:25 PM]
Anyway, there's another contract that wasn't even a handshake or written down, but was carried out faithfully,
between Théoden and Ghân-buri-ghân.
[4:26 PM]
Merry found out about it, spying from the bushes.
That bit with Merry is a reminder that this is mostly all told from the view of hobbits.
[4:27 PM]

The contract is in The Return of the King, "The Ride of the Rohirrim"

Quote:
"Let Ghân-buri-ghân finish!" said the Wild Man. "More than one road he knows. He will lead you by road where no pits are, no gorgûn walk, only Wild Men and beasts.
Many paths were made when Stonehouse-folk were stronger. They carved hills as hunters carve beast-flesh. Wild Men think they ate stone for food.
They went through Druadan to Rimmon with great wains. They go no longer. Road is forgotten, but not by Wild Men.
Over hill and beyond hill it lies still under grass and tree, there behind Rimmon and down to Dîn, and back at the end to Horse-men's road. Wild Men will show you that road.
Then you will kill gorgûn and drive away bad dark with bright iron, and Wild Men can go back to sleep in the wild woods."

Éomer and the king spoke together in their own tongue. At length Théoden turned to the Wild Man. "We will receive your offer," he said.
"For though we leave a host of foes behind, what matter? If the Stone-city falls, then we shall have no returning.
If it is saved, then the orchost itself will be cut off.
If you are faithful, Ghân-buri-ghân, then we will give you rich reward, and you shall have the friendship of the Mark forever."

"Dead men are not friends to living men, and give them no gifts," said the Wild Man.
"But if you live after the Darkness, then leave Wild Men alone in the woods and do not hunt them like beasts any more.
Ghân-buri-ghân will not lead you into trap. He will go himself with father of Horse-men, and if he leads you wrong, you will kill him."

"So be it!" said Théoden.
End Quote.
[4:30 PM]

Other contracts occur too, but it is worth noting that the really big contracts are junk paper if the real will is not behind them, so during the War of the Ring, it's the ones between people that are really big.
[4:33 PM]
This is part of the concept of honor that we see in the good folk. Sauron's folk are held together by fear.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:34 PM
"We are truth speakers, we men of Gondor."

Varda — Today at 4:34 PM
: )
[4:36 PM]
Apparently also true for the Rohirrim.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:36 PM
An Oath is also a contract.

Varda — Today at 4:37 PM
Aye. As we saw at the Stone of Erech.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:37 PM
The Oath between Eorl and Cirion

Varda — Today at 4:38 PM
That was a big one.
[4:42 PM]
Gimli was warned about taking oaths by Elrond.
[4:45 PM]
Ok, that's all I had for tonight. : )
[4:45 PM]
I thank all of you for being such honorable people in the guild. It does my heart good to have met you, online and/or in person. : )
[4:46 PM]
gavel and hammerpad grow tiny stick arms and salute each other
[4:46 PM]
bonk!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:46 PM
Caught up!

Varda — Today at 4:46 PM
After-meeting
[4:46 PM]
Welcome back, Phar : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:46 PM
Oathbreakers knew the costs of breaking a contract
[4:46 PM]
something about being undead for a few years

Varda — Today at 4:46 PM
They learned earlier!
[4:46 PM]
heh

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:47 PM
And yes, the simplest contracts seem to be the most honest. When the contract you're offered has small print... be very afraid.
[4:48 PM]
The "junk paper" as you mentioned

Varda — Today at 4:48 PM
Too true.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:48 PM
I would like to add that in the parody book Bored of the Rings, Gandalf was a master of setting up and exploiting contracts, as I recall  A real businessman.

Varda — Today at 4:49 PM
heh

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:49 PM
Aragorn wanted to be rid of him so much, he offered him all of Mordor and a fat expense account (by contract) only to be voided if he ever set foot back in Gondor
[4:50 PM]
Anyway, that's what contracts in LotR reminded me of

Varda — Today at 4:50 PM
Lawyer removal plan. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:51 PM
Oh! Right. My bit of gaming news, not to be confused with the report to be given later.

Varda — Today at 4:52 PM
ok : )

Heroes of the Storm:
Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:52 PM
https://news.blizzard.com/en-gb/heroes-of-the-storm/23820714/heroes-of-the-storm-update-july-8-2022
Heroes of the Storm Update - July 8, 2022
We want to let you know about a development change we’re making for Heroes of the Storm.

Varda — Today at 4:52 PM
erases some code

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:52 PM
Heroes of the Storm's going into what we call "support mode" at its 7 year anniversary.
[4:53 PM]
Similar to Starcraft II.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:53 PM
Blizzard: killing perfectly good games off for no reason since 2008

Varda — Today at 4:53 PM
sad

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:53 PM
No new content, heroes, or newly purchaseable will be added. However, they will still do hero rotations, season rotations and balance updates/bugfixes as needed.
[4:54 PM]
*newly purchaseable cosmetics
Howeverrrr, they are giving away their last new mount with next week's patch, which I'll be logging in for
[4:55 PM]
I guess I can always come back later to buy all the stuff I didn't buy yet

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:55 PM
Don't reward them

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:55 PM
Reward them how? I'd buy it with in-game currency.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:55 PM
Ah, that's fine.
[4:56 PM]
I haven't paid Blizz a dime since Blitzchung and I should have stopped before that. I stopped playing Blizzard games entirely and only restarted recently, refusing to play public games.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:57 PM
But honestly, Heroes of the Storm doesn't really surprise me. I haven't played it in a good while, and they stopped putting out new heroes some time before that. I think it just wasn't popular enough to put in the costs of a team to put in new content like that.
[4:57 PM]
At least what's there is still being supported.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:57 PM
By all accounts it's perfectly viable and makes them money.
SC2 as well
they just... don't care

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:57 PM
They prefer to look at new projects.

Varda — Today at 4:58 PM
shiny

r-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:58 PM
Arclight, D4, Overwatch 2, Dragonflight...

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:58 PM
Yes, their new project of checks notes the exact same game they released already, but with PvE?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:59 PM
Anyway, that was my news.

Varda — Today at 5:00 PM
Thanks, Phar. : )

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:00 PM
Thanks for the reminder, Phar. Forgot about it by the time I was gathering the news for Gaming and apparently didn't see the announcement on the HotS page.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:01 PM
So what Blizzard games do you play, Pallando? Lost Vikings? :)

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:01 PM
None, for years.
Refuse to give them money.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:01 PM
No problem, Eonwe  I had to doublecheck to see whether you'd included it.
[5:01 PM]
You said you restarted recently

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:01 PM
Yeah, SC2, with friends only.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:01 PM
Ah! Right. You said.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:02 PM
I cost them money.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:02 PM
eheh
[5:02 PM]
That's one way to look at it.

Varda — Today at 5:02 PM
Sounds like our Diablo days, playing with the guild for people we could trust, already vetted.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:02 PM
But hey, you paid for the game originally. Used to be a time when that was enough to not "cost them money" playing it.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:02 PM
No, I specifically don't play public so as to deny other people (who might spend money) the content/partnership.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:03 PM
Multiplayer or no multiplayer, like Starcraft or Warcraft 3.
[5:03 PM]
The originals, anyway.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:03 PM
That was never true for SC2, everything is online, even the campaign.
[5:03 PM]
We can only hope that Stormgate comes out better than it looks.
[5:04 PM]
has first-class co-op

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:04 PM
They're not removing anything, are they?
[5:04 PM]
Except... potential, I suppose.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:04 PM
not yet.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:05 PM
Did they remove anything for Starcraft 2 after supportmode?

allando-Valar — Today at 5:05 PM
No idea.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:05 PM
Not that I heard or noticed.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:05 PM
Then I wouldn't worry about it that much.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:06 PM
Well, we don't know what Blizzard looks like after MS buys them. Hopefully a lot better.
[5:06 PM]
But we'll see.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:07 PM
Yeah, the guys who said "Do you guys not have phones?" bought by the guys who sold their new console by saying
"If you don't want to always be connected to the internet, buy our old console." Yep, I expect vast improvement there.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:07 PM
haha

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:07 PM
Listen, can it be worse than being run by Bobby Kotick?
[5:08 PM]
At worst, it'll be awful in a new, exciting way.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:08 PM
It can always be worse, it's just a question of how bad can it get.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:09 PM
That is totally true.
Thus, we rest our hopes in Stormgate.
and HW3.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:09 PM
Eh, I've got Metroid Dread, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth :}

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:10 PM
Oh, by Stormgate I thought you meant what's happening to Heroes of the Storm in a watergate style

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:10 PM
Oh, I have plenty of other games.
[5:11 PM]
I meant specifically for RTS.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:11 PM
I thought you meant you were waiting to see if Heroes of the Storm's support mode was going to be a scandal.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:11 PM
ah, no
The Frost Giant game

Varda — Today at 5:12 PM
continues with LotRO

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:13 PM
sneaks in with some glitter

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:13 PM
I'm not really concerned with RTS games right now, and this one appears to be set in a post-apocalyptic world. Eh, kinda stale setting to me, but I hope it's a fun game for others.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:14 PM
Aiya Arien

Varda — Today at 5:14 PM
Sunshine!

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:14 PM
aiya all

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:14 PM
I've got plenty of games to play.. Expeditions: Rome and the Forgotten City and NEBULOUS and Project Wingman and Control and Hand of Fate 2 and Inscryption and someday I should actually play Call of Juarez and poke at Helium Rain and I need to find someone to play Lemnis Gate with and I need to play NieR and...

Varda — Today at 5:14 PM
hehe

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:15 PM
I still want to finish the Rayman series and Impossible Creatures and Populous the Beginning and so many others one day...

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:15 PM
Ugh...... mustn't... too late.....

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:15 PM
Yeah, if you watch the trailer it's really obvious that Stormgate devs are Blizzard devs. You've got the Terran guitar riff, the little robot companion sounds exactly like a probe and they're facing an invasion of demons...

Varda — Today at 5:15 PM
chuckles at Eonwe

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:16 PM
Ah right, I knew I'd heard of Frost Giant before.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:16 PM
It is very much "Legally Distinct From Starcraft: the video game"

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:16 PM

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:16 PM
alternative working title of "Our Lawyers Say This Is As Close As We Can Get: the video game"

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:16 PM
I've got a whole bucket list of games I've always liked and want to replay or just play and finish for once without cheating.

@Eonwë Valar
And Pallando made me do this.....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_HBmZuJlHs
Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:17 PM
On advice of legal counsel, I can neither confirm nor deny that I was alluding to this scene...

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:17 PM
Including all the Age of Empires games, the Broken Sword series, all the Elder Scrolls games, the entire Diablo series, my 17-game Command and Conquer collection...
[5:17 PM]
By the time I get to them half of them will be unplayable, but there's always emulators and stuff.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:18 PM
No one needs to play Daggarfall, and Morrowind, while nostalgic, is very much a product of its time.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:18 PM
Morrowind is the ES games I played the most.
[5:18 PM]
*game
[5:18 PM]
I'd like to go through it again.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:18 PM
Oblivion and Skyrim are generic mealy mush and there's nothing of value to be gained there.
[5:19 PM]
Ah, in that case it might be worth returing to, but... you're going to feel pain.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:19 PM
Also because I bought the "game of the year" edition after that with a full map and both expansions.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:19 PM
Might be best to keep those memories as memories.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:19 PM
Which I never got to play
[5:20 PM]
But if you looked at this list and the slow slow rate I've been going through it... I'll be 90 by the end.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:20 PM
Well what else are you gonna do? Work? :} Who has time for that with all those games to play! :}

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:20 PM
Agreed!

Varda — Today at 5:20 PM
hahaha

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:20 PM
What else am I gonna do? looks at to-do list for WoW

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:20 PM
LEt's see if Expeditions: Rome is still all crashy.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:21 PM
Did I mention I have a roster of 21 WoW characters I'd like to at least level and maybe unlock pretty much everything on?

Varda — Today at 5:22 PM
At least on a main?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:22 PM
Oh, sure, my main's still active. But he's fallen behind on some stuff, mostly because I want a few alts to get to max level and covenant campaigned first.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:23 PM
The only thing I care about at this point in WoW is the Green Fire Ashbringer, and I'm more likely to win the lottery and marry a supermodel than I am to get that at this point, so, eh.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:23 PM
hehe

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:23 PM
Still crashes.  File integrity validation time.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:24 PM
Win the lottery and employ a bunch of people to get it for you!

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:24 PM
heh
[5:24 PM]

Perrrsonal gaming report!

Rolling your "r" there in "Perrrsonal" made me think of that, heh.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:28 PM
This week I thought about an old flashgame made with WoW graphics back in 2006.
[6:29 PM]
A simple rpg, which nonetheless was quite popular at the time, and spawned an expansion and part of a sequel, wherein you play a murloc which you have to level up WoW style in order to help out your village.
[6:30 PM]
Being flash, while it didn't work anymore in recent times, I did find them in the Flashpoint program, and have been enjoying them.
And I also found out, this week, that the creator made a non-flash version, free to download or at a price you're willing to support him with.
So if you want to play it, with all the content, go to https://tkon.itch.io/murloc-rpg and enjoy

Murloc RPG Classic by tkon
A remake of the of the original Murloc RPG

[6:31 PM]
It's nostalgic, at least
[6:32 PM]
Let's get ready to Mrrrrrglmble!
[6:35 PM]
Blizzard gaming:
Hearthstone:
119 on the reward track! Getting more gold, wooh.
[6:36 PM]
Over 2k now, so if nothing else, the next miniset I can already pay
[6:39 PM]
Along the way I completed several more legendary quests for the questline, including 2 battlegrounds. You don't need to win them, but I almost did anyway... turns out that out of 8 people, 7 of us were happy to do simply nothing and get killed, presumably for the same quest, and I ended up in second place behind the only person who actually made an effort  Though I did spend my turns upgrading the inn and then collecting a legendary or two, so I did do something to earn that second place!
2 more quests to go, for a pack and a portrait.
One of the quests, to do 3 mercenary bounties, also gave me a mercenary pack, which I'll get to later!
[6:42 PM]
I also got the 100th season's card back. While some websites made note of it being the 100th month/season of play and seasonal card back, and I was actually tracking it myself, Blizzard didn't really do anything with it. Still, Driftwood-themed, it's actually quite bright and natury, and I've applied it to my druid decks. Which is also featuring a tree character skin so it fits
[6:43 PM]
Brawl is the all-star squad! Make a deck with 1 card, get 22 copies of it, and 8 random class cards.
[6:45 PM]
While there are some broken cards for that, and I have used decks like that in the past, this time around I toyed around a bit with one of the most basic warlock cards, the voidwalker. At 1 mana cost, 3 health and with taunt, I figured it'd be nice to try, maybe slow down a few of the more niche decks. I knew a deck full of taunts would stop that Elwynn Boar combo anyway... which I didn't even end up facing
[6:46 PM]
Anyway, got a decent winrate with it, so I feel pretty happy about that. A lot of other people's decks started out strongly, but didn't seem to be able to break through my walls of itty bitty demons
[6:47 PM]
Right! Mercenaries! A few more mercs on the quests to level to 30. Saurfang made it to that max level, and a few more will soon follow.
I also got a nr 17 task done, giving me a mercenary pack.
That particular pack gave me Varian Wrynn himself, while I also got enough coins for the dragonqueen Alexstrasza, and the merc pack from the quest I mentioned earlier gave me Karathress, one of the naga mercenaries. Might be familiar to those who have raided the Eternal Palace in WoW.
[6:49 PM]
Nope, l'm confusing him with someone else. Karathress was a boss in Serpentshrine Cavern  Still, might be familiar!
[6:50 PM]
So yes, bunch of levels all around, and 3 new mercs for the collection.
[6:51 PM]
I also think Rexxar's almost complete, but not sure when I'll have the chance to get his last few coins, except for random task rewards. We'll see.
Anyway!
WoW:
[6:52 PM]
Raiding has begun again! We finally brought down the Lords of Dread, and only 2 bossfights remain. Even with nerfs, Rygelon's quite a pain, but we're making progress, having gotten through 2 intermissions and about half his health.
[6:54 PM]
Weekly quest is pandaria timewalks, which I completed tonight, but no useful reward from it. At least I got to visit Stormstout Brewery again, which is probably my favorite dungeon of Pandaria
[6:56 PM]
Other than that... more alting. My paladin Alcaria completed Maldraxxus and is about halfway through Ardenweald, which also comes with a lot of side questlines branching off of the main path, rather than to be found isolated around the zone to be completed after the main storyline, like in some other zones.
[6:57 PM]
Lots of fae, gormlings (yay!) and carving my way through spriggans. There's something really cathartic about killing spriggans, the little bullies that they are.
[6:58 PM]
Oh, and she got to level 58, so not too far to go until 60.
[6:59 PM]
I'm sure she'll get there before starting Revendreth, so I might go back and go for some level 60 sidequests in Bastion before I move to the last zone.
[7:02 PM]
You know, it feels weird to have larger Hearthstone reports than WoW reports like this. I wonder how long it'll last
But that's my report for the week!

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:13 PM
:}

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:49 PM
Random factoid: "huan" is, appropriately, the Quenya word for "hound."

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:49 PM
Ahh, imagine calling your dog "dog".

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:49 PM
"huo" is dog.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:50 PM
Well, close enough.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:50 PM
Wasn't correcting you, btw, you just happened to type your comment faster than I added that in, heh.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:50 PM
It's like WoW hunters who keep their pets' default names, like a boar called Boar.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:51 PM
But yeah, naming a wolfhound "hound" same idea.
[7:51 PM]
There is a John Wayne movie where he just calls his dog "dog".

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:51 PM

Eonwë Valar — Today at 8:21 PM

[8:24 PM]
I guess she gets to avoid swimming a little longer :}
[8:31 PM]
Almost-random thought: You think elf girls ever pretended they were Luthien and tried to find a dog big enough to ride around on like Huan? :}

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 8:32 PM
Hmm, I can imagine that. Though I'm not sure how widely spread that story would be among the youth.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 8:33 PM
I think some of the bigger First Age stories would be told about as widely known as fairy-tales are for us: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, etc. (edited)

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 8:34 PM
Complete with kiddyproofed ending versions?

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:35 PM
Aiya All! I just made it to my Motel in Wichita, KS...about 4.5 hours to go to Lincoln tomorrow, but most of my travel is over for the day. Hope you folks had a good meeting today.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 8:35 PM
No, probably the original Grimm Fairy Tale versions, hehehe. (edited)
[8:35 PM]

Aiya Varda! I am thinking back to our conversation this morning about Pennzoil winning its suit against Texaco, because Pennzoil and Getty had a deal based simply upon a handshake.  I think that is a perfect example of your notes about a contractdbeing something to honor if it is verbally (or handshhaked!) upon.

Varda — Today at 8:57 PM
Aye!
