Anything anyone would like to mention for Membership news? Ski slopes, crazy weather?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:05 PM
The skiing was great...did some of the best skiing of my life - despite my age - on Wednesday. 15 runs, 10 black, 5 blue. Thursday - not so good. Snowy and low visibility. I only got in 6 runs because my friend crashed and needed to get home...3 blue, 3 black. The trip home Friday was perfect...clear blue sky, cold, sunny...light traffic. I am thankful, and I could not ask for more. I am glad to be back, though, and here with you all.

Varda — Today at 4:06 PM
Congratulations on super-skiing! Sounds amazing! Sorry about Del and hope he's ok?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:07 PM
Yes. It just so happens that our time at the Library coincides today, and he is sitting a couple of desks away catching up on the newspapers he missed while he was gone.

Varda — Today at 4:07 PM
Very good. : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:07 PM
It is a perfect day to be online with Tolkien...we have a blue sky again, very few clouds, and a bright, golden sun.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:08 PM
So, you're saying.. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor? :}

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:08 PM
Indeed I am!

Varda — Today at 4:09 PM
Perfect here too, and for the last few days. Cold front should be coming in tomorrow with rain and freezing temperatures, maybe long enough to kill the flea and mosquito eggs that hide out during the "winter".
[4:09 PM]
hehe - really liked him. : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:09 PM
How cold will it get?

Varda — Today at 4:09 PM
You would probably call it shirt-sleeve weather, figuring at least down into 32 F to help us out.
[4:10 PM]
69 F right now.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:10 PM
Yes...that is very warm for January in Lincoln, usually. I ran in shorts and a light sweatshirt yesterday.

Varda — Today at 4:11 PM
We feel the temperature difference because it's such a change. Dropping 40 degrees is noticeable. Normal swing in a day is 10.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:11 PM
It will be below zero again F on Thursday and Friday evening coming up this week....
[4:12 PM]
That sounds about right...a 40 degree change is always noticeable.

Nothing much to report. Dr Who event continues, there's a 2v2 arena this weekend which I'd be happy to assist/fly with folks on, there were some CCP interviews done recently where they spoke in generalities about what's coming but little in the way of specifics.

Varda — Today at 4:20 PM
Thank you for the kindly offer of your help!

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:22 PM
Do we have a source on the stuff opening up for F2Pers, Varda? Not that it affects me personally since I'm a Lifetimer, but curious what all it is. [Note: LotRO]

Varda — Today at 4:22 PM
We do, but it's still iffy.
Gold cap is a big one.
[4:23 PM]
A wallet, not the premium, but a huge help for inventory.
[4:24 PM]
And a number of others. I'll have to dig around for a written source, as the one I was hearing from was a very long video.

Tolkien!
[4:32 PM]
If you have a topic, type it in fast before you get mine. : )
[4:33 PM]
This topic comes in several parts. First part:
[4:33 PM]

Galadriel didn't like the term "magic". Why?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:34 PM
Because Elves have a better innate sense of the connectedness of fea and hroar, and each with the natural world
[4:34 PM]
To them, what we call magic is really our lack of understanding of the above.

Varda — Today at 4:35 PM
To us modern types, that would be the spirit and the body (more or less).

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:35 PM
Aiya all

Varda — Today at 4:35 PM
Aiya Arien : )

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:36 PM
Well, she probably wouldn't mind the word "magic" in and of itself as a way for mortals to try and understand it, if it wasn't equally used to describe the "arts" of Sauron.
[4:38 PM]
Elves clearly see a difference between what they do and what Sauron does.

Varda — Today at 4:38 PM
That's what the book was commenting on. The confusion between what she did and what Sauron did
[4:40 PM]
Can we see a difference?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:42 PM
Being distantly part-Elf himself, and having been raised in Imladris, I believe that Aragorn clearly sees and understands what the Elves are doing that the rest of us call "magic."
[4:42 PM]
could be. I never thought of that. I can try again when I get homet.
[4:43 PM]
Sorry! Wrong screen! That was for Varda!

Varda — Today at 4:43 PM
(the joys of multiple conversations!)

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:44 PM
I think I had jjust better stick with Discord for now. I am appreciating the conversation going on and don't want to miss too much of it.

Varda — Today at 4:44 PM
Sure, just when you get a moment. : )
What did Aragorn clearly see that others didn't?

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:44 PM
Tolkien did define "magic" once or twice. At least one of those described it as essentially a shortcut to desired results without putting in work.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:45 PM
What the Elves were doing...for example, Galadriel and her Mirror. I am sure that Aragorn had seen her use her Mirror before, and he knew what she was doing...plus, Aragorn had his own store of foresight.
[4:46 PM]
Furthermore, as a Healer, did not Aragorn himself use "magic" when he breathed on the leaves of Athelas, and a living scent discernible to all entered the room?
I think Tolkien called it a "living freshness."

Varda — Today at 4:48 PM
So are you saying that the idea of living freshness is the difference between what Galadriel did and what Sauron did? [Note: no, the reference was to the effect that the king's use of athelas gives.]

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:48 PM
In the case we're dealing with, it seems mostly a matter of motive. Sauron's "magic" is used to deceive and delude. Elves "magic" to teach, inform, entertain, restore.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:49 PM
You have it exactly, Eonwe.
[4:50 PM]
Yes. What the Elves (and a few Numenoreans) could do with elements of the natural world is the opposite of what Sauron would do. I say would, because perhaps at one point, early in his career, he could have chosen to do good with his "magic" as well?

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:50 PM
Bah, was going to pull out my Letters and dig out a quote, but I put my book somewhere and I can't easily get it right now.

Varda — Today at 4:51 PM
Sauron, when he was Annatar and the pupil of Aule, did indeed do good work. [Note: Annatar wasn't the right name to use here, trying to refer to pre-Sauron.]

Eonwë Valar — Today at 4:51 PM
Well, I don't know about as "Annatar" :}
[4:51 PM]
Maybe to further the deception.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:52 PM
Yes...but alas, the lure of Melkor was stronger for Sauron than the lure of Aule et al.

Varda — Today at 4:52 PM
Power.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:53 PM
I believe that Olorin did NOT want to go to M.E., because he was afraid of Sauron. Apparently Saurons road to evil started quite early.
[4:54 PM]
The Tolkien Gateway says that Sauron's original Maia name was Mairon.

Varda — Today at 4:55 PM
ok
Are there other effects that we readers might consider "magic" by our own understanding of the term?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:55 PM
I always thought that it was something else, though.
[4:55 PM]
What about the Lamps of the Noldor?

Varda — Today at 4:56 PM
You mean of the Valar?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:56 PM
No...I meant the lamps that Gelmir used to help Tuor start down the tunnel that led to the sea and Vinyamar.

Varda — Today at 4:57 PM
Do we see underlying sources of the magical effects used?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:57 PM
I will go grab the Library Silmarillion and find the reference.

Varda — Today at 4:59 PM
Runnng out of time and trying to get all the parts of my question out there. : )

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:59 PM
i d call it gifts rather than magic I think that is how I came to see it.. remember when i wrote Aranwe s story he developed a healing gift when he needed it to rescue himself and  the other prisoners of the orcs

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:00 PM
If you're talking about Gelmir with Tuor you might be looking for something from a different book. The two Gelmirs in the Sil don't seem to have been involed with Tuor, but with Nargothrond.
[5:00 PM]
Or at least a quick glance isn't revealing it. I see Voronwë, son of Aranwë though.

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:01 PM
I think Galadriel s Mirror is working in the same way as a kind of communication to help Galadriel and give her an idea what to expect and such

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:01 PM
Ach...was ein Dummkopf! What a dummy I am! The Silmarillion only includes the SHORT version of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin. The full tale of his travels and his meeting with Ulmo is contained in the UT...and I do not have a copy here...but the lamps that the Noldor made would certainly be considered "magical" by mere mortals.

Varda — Today at 5:02 PM
(At this point, I must pass the gavel to Eonwe. Have fun with the subject, and please note that last question!)

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:02 PM
Yes...that is because Gelmir was carrying a message to Nargothrond, and by chance (?) met Tuor along the road and agreed to help him. What an interesting turn of fate.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:02 PM
Aiya, catching up!

Varda — Today at 5:02 PM
(I expect to return in a few hours.)
[5:02 PM]
(Aiya Phar!)

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:02 PM
Ok, so to re-iterate Varda's question: Do we see underlying sources of the magical effects used?
[5:03 PM]
If we did, would it still be magic? ;}

Varda — Today at 5:03 PM
(Even magic has rules of some sort, or boundaries.)
[5:03 PM]
Namarie for now.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:03 PM
Isn't the reason we consider it "magic" because we can't make the connection between start and finish? :}
[5:03 PM]
Take care Varda :}

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:04 PM
Take care Varda

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:04 PM
Namarie, Varda!

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:05 PM
I d say the magic that has the source in the valar is to benefit others while Sauron s magic is to intimidate and even destroy

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:07 PM
But I still don't think it is "magic," I just think that the Valar, the Maia, the Elves, and a few chosen mortals are better at manipulating that which is available in the natural world.
We (mortals all) are really pretty dumb about a lot of things.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:07 PM
Aye, it's their innate ability to affect the world around them.
[5:09 PM]
Sauron also made use of Melkor's dispersal of his native power into the substance of Arda. That could be considered "magic" in that it's not his own power.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:10 PM
(something about sufficiently advanced technology)

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:10 PM
Aiya Ar!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:10 PM
Aiya
[5:11 PM]
So much things can be seen as magic when they simply use natural mechanics that we don't know about. In Tolkien as in real life.
*so many

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:11 PM
I agree with you, Ar...
[5:11 PM]
Do we really even understand Quantum Mechanics, and effect at a distance? No...it might appear magical to us...

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:12 PM
The potential powers of the spirit and its relation to the body can explain a lot of things in Tolkien that can be seen as magic. But not just for the Valar and Elves.
[5:13 PM]
Morgoth and Sauron's magic also depended in great part of this "magic" of the fear, in the ways of corruption for example.
*on this

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:14 PM
They (Melkor and Sauron) certainly knew what they were doing, and who they were dealing with.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:14 PM
In fact, a lot of Morgoth and Sauron's evil can be traced back to their own feär and the way they extended it over the world.
If feär is still the right word for the existence of the Ainur.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:15 PM
Is not fea and hroar the equivalent of the spirit and the body?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:16 PM
It is. And I imagine that the Ainur have versions of those too, except their fear are more powerful and therefore give them greater control over their hroar as well as the physical world itself.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:17 PM
Well, their Hroar is more like clothing.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:18 PM
Both Melkor and Sauron used part of their "essence", which I suspect is basically their fear (that sounds really weird without the umlaut, though) to infect the world with their evil, thus also reducing their influence on their forms/hroar.
Yes, Eonwe, but losing it and recovering from that still took a lot of their power.
Sauron, for example, upon losing his form in the Akallabeth, was unable to take the form of Annatar again, after putting so much power in the Ring.
[5:19 PM]
And Morgoth put so much power in the world, he too was locked into a physical appearance, allowing for his eventual thrusting out of the world.
So their power over their bodies was not unlimited.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:20 PM
The way it's explained in some of the various books is that some actions in the hroa can bind you more strongly to it. Like, say, having a child.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:20 PM
Hmm, that's possible.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:21 PM
Luthien's conception and birth bound Melian to her physical body until Luthien passed.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:21 PM
There is a beautiful fan fiction story by MP Brennan on Stories of Arda, in which Elrond says to Estel, that he believes that while Elves may have the stronger hor ar, Men have the stronger fear...

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:22 PM
Sauron and Morgoth through different types of actions and their desire to act upon the physical world became dependant upon their bodies, and of course when you see your body as more than a nice suit you're going to put a little more into it.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:22 PM
That could also have a connection to the fear, though. Did not Miriel put so much of her spirit in Feanor that it was largely drained and consumed?

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:23 PM
I think that you are right, Ar.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:23 PM
That's what she says, in accordance with Elvish belief on the matter of begetting children.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:24 PM
Is it possible that Celebrian put so much effort into bearing Elladan, Elrohir, and Arwen, that she herself was weakened, and therefore unable to withstand the torture of the Orcs as well? After all, Maedhros survived hanging by one hand for a very long time...

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:25 PM
That makes me wonder if women in Tolkien's works are by nature disadvantaged after having children.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:26 PM
Maedhros had just come out of Aman and had to make the best of his time in Middle-Earth anyway. He wasn't going to be getting a free boat ride back.

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:27 PM
I dont think woman in Tokien are pictured really as much disadvantaged at least not in Lord of the Rings .. thinking of lots of strong woman he showsz

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:27 PM
Yes, but how many of them still had such spirit and strength after becoming mothers?

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:27 PM
Luthien, Eowyn , Arwen ]

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:27 PM
Galadriel?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:27 PM
Yes, all of them maidens
[5:27 PM]
Galadriel, fair enough.

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:28 PM
even Aragorns mother was quite strong

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:28 PM
Lobelia?

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:28 PM
Yes...Galadriel certainly seems to have kept her strength even after childbirth.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:28 PM
Alright, I guess things aren't as bleak as I feared

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:29 PM
"I love not the sword for its brightness. ---Faramir" Let's not mistake standing on a battlefield as the only kind of strength.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:29 PM
But childbirth can affect every woman differently...
[5:29 PM]
You are so right, Eonwe.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:31 PM
Strength comes in many forms, not just physical prowess.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:32 PM
While some women were or may have been a bit more limited by expending power in childbirth, it's good to see many of them were at least still strong.
[5:34 PM]
Limited? Let's say "weakened", it sounds nicer.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:35 PM
I don't know about "nicer" :}  But childbirth is going to have a toll on the body. Doesn't lessen the strength of spirit.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:36 PM
Oops...I need to gather my things and repair to Subway for some dinner. I shall try to get back online later, and maybe catch Varda. Thank you all for allowing me to join in your conversation! Your company is a rare gift.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:36 PM
Glad I could participate a bit, even if later on.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 5:36 PM
Take care Sandalf :}

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:37 PM
Take care Sandalf

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:37 PM
Thank you, and Namarie!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:37 PM
Anyway, my original point was that Morgoth and Sauron's magic, and the power they put in the world and other races, also seemed to draw a lot from their own feär and its relationship to the physical world, as a power source similar to what the Elves used.

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:37 PM
Namarie from me as well as i have to go to bed

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:37 PM

And aye, Phar. Similar in that it was derived from themselves. Elvish fëar were similar in nature to the Ainur. Taking a physical form was the cost of acting on the world.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:25 PM
Have fun.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:25 PM
Brawl this week is a mercenary story related one, where you play Tavish vs Rokara (or other way around) against another player, with each player being able to choose another of their faction's mercenaries as a hero power buddy, with preset decks.
[7:25 PM]
Ah, enjoy :)

Varda — Today at 7:25 PM
Always, and will be here too, getting in Phar's typing way. ; )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:25 PM
Kinda weird brawl, with heroes, powers and cards I'm not used to... but luckily I won one!

Varda — Today at 7:26 PM
Yay Phar!
[7:27 PM]
(We are in the Phar Zone, at the Phar Side.)

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:27 PM
Oh, and during ranked, got my demon hunter to level 49, as well as getting to gold rank in wild mode for the first time after spending many months in bronze and silver. Not sure why, my decks haven't changed  much  But still nice to see the gold portraits for a change.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:29 PM
Annatar: Phar from Home  (Phar be it from me to start making puns. Oh wait, that's exactly like me.)

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:29 PM
I'll Phargive you.

Varda — Today at 7:29 PM
heehe

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:31 PM
For mercenaries, no new mercs at level 30, but got some good levels on Gruul, Geddon and Saurfang. Also, on the same night I faced Shelob using King Crush, and saying I didn't have that one yet... I ended up getting enough coins to unlock him
I know Mukla and Krush can make a powerful combo, must look into that in the future.
[7:32 PM]
Other than that, got a bunch of high level mercenary tasks done as well, approaching the end for some. Highest so far is 14 out of 18.
(highest so phar?)
[7:33 PM]
WoW:
Raiding: We got Kel'thuzad down on heroic difficulty! Including getting me the best heroic level bear pants available.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:34 PM
So you don't have him on Pharm yet.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:35 PM
Next target is Sylvanas. Taking some casualties in phase 1, as well as running into dps/timing problems in phase 1. Technically we made it to phase 3 once, but that was just with one death knight, in purgatory mode I believe, so it doesn't really count
Nope, not on pharm yet :)
Still, we're pushing it.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:36 PM
:}

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:37 PM
For old raiding, the week after getting the mount from Ji-Kun, I also ended up getting the pet from Ji-Kun as well! Just one pet remaining from that raid.
[7:38 PM]
Weekly quests is pet battles! Did my 5 pvp pet battles again, and ended up getting the 250 pet battle wins achievement along the way  It's not much, but an achievement is an achievement!
[7:40 PM]
Slowly getting more anima still, buying my first weapon appearance from the night fae armor vendor for it, a scepter. The grind continues!
[7:41 PM]
And finally alting!
[7:42 PM]
Had some good fun with the mage. While her main spec is fire, I did go for the other artifacts in their respective specs. Frosty seems similar to fire when it comes to certain proc relations, but arcane is a bit more out of the way, with a lot of actively timed buffs and effects.
[7:43 PM]
Still, got out with both Ebonchill and Aluneth, getting some good nexus lore along the way.
[7:44 PM]
I then continued the class campaign, making it to the final quest available before 45. Along the way I got her from level 34 to 36, and recruited the first 4 champions.
[7:45 PM]
Now I gotta do some missions while I poke one of the questing zones, probably Azsuna again. Onward to 45!
[7:45 PM]
And that's my report for the week

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:48 PM
Congrats :}
[7:49 PM]
I finally got around to skilling up my farmer on LotRO. A little more tedious and alot easier than I expected it to be.
[7:50 PM]
Seems to me someone with enough gold could level up a farmer and a cook together pretty easily.
And if there's a vocation that has both together (Which I apparently don't have) then that would just be even quicker for that one character.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:51 PM
Sounds good
[7:52 PM]
Well, namarie!

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:52 PM
Sleep well Phar. May your dreams be near, heh.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:52 PM
Thanks

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:52 PM
Last "Phar" pun of the night :}

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 7:53 PM
Heh, didn't even notice that one.

Eonwë Valar — Today at 7:54 PM
:}

Varda — Today at 8:37 PM
Phar well.
[8:37 PM]
Yeoman has cook and farmer together.
It takes a lot of space

Eonwë Valar — Today at 8:55 PM
Aha, don't have that one on any characters yet.
Maybe if I ever make a Runekeeper I throw it on him.
[8:56 PM]
Or I guess any character really. No reason to pick a specific class.

Varda — Today at 9:06 PM
Hunter is great for a yeoman.
[9:07 PM]
Makes a campfire, hops to handy working spots whenever desired.
[9:08 PM]
My Tintalli is a hunter yeoman.
