Before-meeting

Eonwλ Valar — 01/12/2022
Metroid Dread is an awesome Metroid game. Finished it, 100%'d it, loads of fun except for maybe two items, others I looked at what it took and I was like "heh, that's cute". 10/10, will play again.

Hi from Fangorn. We were just in LotRO together.
[4:04 PM]
Any membership comments?
Oh, Tuor appeared on the Forum. Didn't post but managed to pop in, yay! Been a while.
[4:05 PM]
Has anyone seen Helm, Aragorn, Fladrif, or others this fine new year, to give them credit for being on?
Hard for me to spot a number of our European buddies, so we need your help there.
[4:06 PM]
Any other membership comments?

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:06 PM
Heya.

Varda — Today at 4:06 PM
Aiya! Kirby is taking over the world again. : )

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:07 PM
:}

Varda — Today at 4:09 PM
Web:
[4:09 PM]
Sandalf has been sending an impressive amount of articles for the Tolkien Encyclopedia. We hope to have them in shape for your perusal one of these fine days. : )
[4:09 PM]
Any other web news?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:10 PM
Thank you for your kind comments. I hope that my work lives up to your expectations.

Varda — Today at 4:10 PM
Tons of good stuff in there.
[4:11 PM]
It will go up eventually!

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:11 PM
I did send you an updated Chapter 6 (Who Foretold What, Whenb) and a Foreword to my book . Via E-Mail.

Varda — Today at 4:12 PM
Aye, and replied just at the start of the meeting. Thanks!

Shelob — Today at 4:12 PM
You've been busy I see.

Varda — Today at 4:12 PM
Will be looking it over for sure.
[4:12 PM]
Aiya Shelob!

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:12 PM
oh and a member ship; news i nearly forgot

Shelob — Today at 4:12 PM
Perhaps it's time to get you fully inducted into the halls of the Valar?
[4:12 PM]
Also, Aiya.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:12 PM
aiya Shelob
[4:13 PM]
:)

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:13 PM
:)

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:13 PM
can i edge that in or should i wait Varda?

Varda — Today at 4:14 PM
Arien, go ahead.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:14 PM
Hey...what happens if I do this:
:(
1
[4:14 PM]
Just testing.

Varda — Today at 4:14 PM
You get emotes.

Shelob — Today at 4:14 PM
You get a frowny face. :)

Varda — Today at 4:14 PM
Arien, go ahead.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:14 PM
some of you might remember Eilinel?

Varda — Today at 4:15 PM
Rings a bell. Europe?

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:15 PM
the member i ltested some years back she lives in the states in fact
[4:15 PM]
think  her husband is a diplomate

Varda — Today at 4:15 PM
I don't remember, really.
[4:15 PM]
Just rings a bell.
[4:16 PM]
In the books, she was Gorlim's wife.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:16 PM
Anyway she has published a historic novel in German  which translates as "For Freedom and  Life/"

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:16 PM
Fόr die Freiheit und das Leben?

Varda — Today at 4:17 PM
Please English-ish for the rest of us and our transcript readers, or at least translate? [Note: oops, he was translating!]

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:17 PM
and it is apparently doing quite well from what i hear via facebook  . Um Freiheit und Leben is the original title  Sandalf

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:17 PM
Ah! I get lost sometimes on when to use/not use the definite article.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:18 PM
For Freedom and life is as close as i gets and it deals around the 1745 and scottish highlands

Varda — Today at 4:18 PM
Did the lady pass the test? Not active enough for us to know her.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:18 PM
she did yes
[4:19 PM]
but think she has been quite busy to be much activew and i thoughjt you had once contact with her
[4:19 PM]
anyway it was just a remark and she at least once had been a member

Varda — Today at 4:20 PM
Inactive 2013.
[4:20 PM]
Located.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:20 PM
if not you can always leave this out of the member ship news
[4:20 PM]
in the log

Varda — Today at 4:20 PM
Didn't get kicked out, just under the Inactives.
But her name is in jeopardy if someone else wants it, from being listed inactive.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:21 PM
sorry then for mentioning it

Varda — Today at 4:21 PM
You should mention. She's still a member.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:21 PM
Is it better, perhaps, for a member to formulate their own name?

Varda — Today at 4:21 PM
Let's us know she's alive. : )

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:21 PM
oh she is yes :@) we are in lose facebook contact

Varda — Today at 4:22 PM
A Tolkien member can pick all sorts of names.
[4:22 PM]
But a Full Member has restrictions.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:22 PM
How does one simply become a Full Member?

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:23 PM
Fights urge to post Boromir.  Fights urge to post Boromir.....

Varda — Today at 4:23 PM
If a person is only interested in the Tolkien aspects, it's best to be a Tolkien member.
[4:23 PM]
hehe

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:23 PM
:}

Varda — Today at 4:23 PM
Full Member games with us and also passes a live test over the Lord of the Rings books, and is able to also act as a Tolkien member.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:23 PM
So I assume...probably incorrectly...that people who are active "gamers" need a name from the LoTR to identify themselves. [Note: The name can be from any of Tolkien's works, dealing with Middle-earth and Valinor. This base name helps ID the player among maybe 60 characters or more spreading across 20 games that may use totally unrelated names and multiple entries in the Tolkien Site.]

@Varda
Full Member games with us and also passes a live test over the Lord of the Rings books, and is able to also act as a Tolkien members.
Shelob — Today at 4:24 PM
The books, not the movies.
[4:24 PM]
And there might be a question that differentiates the two.

Varda — Today at 4:24 PM
We are a Tolkien and Gaming group. A Full Member, therefore, does both.
[4:24 PM]
Aye, Shelob.
[4:24 PM]
LotRO is the game, LotR is the book trilogy.

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:24 PM
Choosing a member name to go by from one of Tolkien's works is one of the rites of passage in becoming a Full Member.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:24 PM
it lusually also includes two written pieces  which are posted on the website and does so once a  year if  you like

Shelob — Today at 4:24 PM
Although we do collectively play other games as well.

Varda — Today at 4:25 PM
Arien, no written pieces are required for Full Members.

Shelob — Today at 4:25 PM
And being active also includes forum or in meetings. And I am hardly on meetings, never on forums, and practically non-existent in games and still listed as active.

Varda — Today at 4:25 PM
A Tolkien member doesn't exist until they add to the Tolkien Site in some fashion, thus the name.
[4:26 PM]
We have a lot of things that let us claim "active", mainly meaning they keep in contact with the guild in some fashion.

@Arien  Valar
it lusually also includes two written pieces  which are posted on the website and does so once a  year if  you like
Shelob — Today at 4:26 PM
I think Arien was pulling a leg or two on poor Sandalf. Which would have been not so bad for him if he had been me. wink

Varda — Today at 4:26 PM
But they have to have done the entry thing for their type of membership.
hands roller skates to Shelob

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:27 PM
nah its cause i remember writing those but i forgot that i joined first as Tolkien member
its i am getting old

Shelob — Today at 4:27 PM
But, let us be honest, the test itself (used to at least) consist of 5 questions which aren't really hard to begin with. They just require you to have read LotR to be able to answer them.

Varda — Today at 4:27 PM
It's a mixed memory. [Note: answering Arien]
I always attempt to be honest.

@Varda
hands roller skates to Shelob
Shelob — Today at 4:27 PM
I'm going to be soooo awesome at roller disco!

Varda — Today at 4:28 PM
The questions are intended merely as proof that the person read the books.
You are!
More than that is needed to go past Tolkien or Full Member. : )

Shelob — Today at 4:28 PM
I kind of hope Sam doesn't become active again. He stings.

Varda — Today at 4:28 PM
Maia Honor has to pass a harder test on LotR.
[4:29 PM]
I would love for Sam to return. FKA Namo/Mandos.
We lost contact. Hope he's ok, one of my first online friends, and first close one.

@Varda
Maia Honor has to pass a harder test on LotR.
Shelob — Today at 4:29 PM
Speaking of which, am I technically still Maia, or have I relinquished that title? I cannot remember.

Varda — Today at 4:29 PM
Shelob, you never lost Maia.
[4:30 PM]
Vala has to be able to be a Maia, but also has to be very good with the Silmarillion and help grow the guild, something of a fanatic for it, in  a way.
Lots of people help for one or two things, then drift away. Not Valar Honor material.

Shelob — Today at 4:30 PM
Ooooh! That raises a fairly interesting question for the Tolkien section.

Varda — Today at 4:31 PM
There is a lot of discussion over what Ungoliant really is.

@Varda
Lots of people help for one or two things, then drift away. Not Valar Honor material.
Shelob — Today at 4:31 PM
I used to go there, and then I kind of drifted of.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:31 PM
Shelob is a descendant of Ungoliant,...

Varda — Today at 4:31 PM
Shelob, however, is a child of Ungoliant, and therefore not of the Ainur or of the suggestion that they came from the void in some weird way.

Shelob — Today at 4:32 PM
Aye, but is Ungoliant of the Ainur?

Varda — Today at 4:32 PM
No Ainur is anyone's child, but is made by Eru directly.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:32 PM
Yes...but then one wonders how Shelob was conceived...

Shelob — Today at 4:32 PM
Spidey whoopie.

Varda — Today at 4:32 PM
The answer on that one is apparently related to Mirkwood spiders.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:32 PM
I believe it is conclusive that Ungoliant was one of the Ainur.

Varda — Today at 4:33 PM
There is argument over Ungoliant. I am on the side that she is of the Ainur, but there are plausible other arguments.

Shelob — Today at 4:33 PM
Ungoliant mated with the spiders of Ered |Gorgoroth, which, while not as great as Ungoliant herself, were still massive.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:33 PM
She fell in with Melkor early.

Shelob — Today at 4:33 PM
The Mirkwood spiders are descendants of that mating I believe.

Varda — Today at 4:33 PM
Melkor made a good bribe, but it didn't protect him when Ungoliant wanted the silmarils too.
Shelob, feel free to look that up and make an article. : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:34 PM
Maybe she originally mated with Melkor?

Varda — Today at 4:34 PM
Not likely, Sandalf.

Shelob — Today at 4:34 PM
But none was so great or full of malice, or inherited fully the ability to spin darkness as much as Shelob did.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:34 PM
Just a thought...I know that they did not part friends...

Varda — Today at 4:34 PM
Shelob did have sisters, but seems as if she was the strongest. That does not bode well for the sisters.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:35 PM
I think , Sandalf , with Ungoliant and Melkor it was more of a business deal or purposedriven contract .. at the beginning at least

Varda — Today at 4:35 PM
Screaming a call for help to the Balrogs is not feeling friended on Morgoth's behalf, aye.

Shelob — Today at 4:35 PM
I'm not too worried about Shelob possibly having devoured her siblings. It's much more likely Ungoliant did.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:35 PM
You are probably correct!

Varda — Today at 4:35 PM
Aye, it was a business deal. She wanted to eat the light of the Two Trees and of the jewels. Morgoth promised much of that.

@Varda
Melkor made a good bribe, but it didn't protect him when Ungoliant wanted the silmarils too.
Shelob — Today at 4:35 PM
Actually, Melkor had promised to give with both hands, but wanted to reneige on that bargain by withholding the Silmarils, which he held in his other.

Varda — Today at 4:35 PM
He wanted the Two Trees down.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:36 PM
What an appetite.

Varda — Today at 4:36 PM
There were a lot of jewels. : )

Shelob — Today at 4:36 PM
Yeah, all the jewels from... what's the name of Finrod's stronghold again in Valinor?

Varda — Today at 4:36 PM
Giving with two hands does not necessarily mean givine all.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:36 PM
In Valinor?

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:37 PM
He should've put them in his pocket. I hear that makes for quite a conundrum when asked about.

Varda — Today at 4:37 PM
Finwe's?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:37 PM
IT was Nargothrond in the Silmarillion...

Varda — Today at 4:37 PM
He means in Valinor.
Nargothrond was in Middle-earth.

Shelob — Today at 4:37 PM
Finwe's, aye.
Where he was slain by Melkor while Feanor was away.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:37 PM
That is my point....I did not think that Finrod had a stronghold in Valinor...

Shelob — Today at 4:38 PM
And for which act he was named Morgoth by Feanor.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:38 PM
Finwe did, yes...a favored hangout.

Shelob — Today at 4:38 PM
Formenos.

Varda — Today at 4:39 PM
I had to look it up. Shelob is correct, Formenos.

Shelob — Today at 4:40 PM
(also looked it up).

Varda — Today at 4:40 PM
Yes, we corrected the name to Finwe, he didn't mean Finrod.

Shelob — Today at 4:40 PM
By the way. Was it for stealing the Silmarils, or the slaying of Finwe that Faenor named him Great Enemy? Or both?

Varda — Today at 4:41 PM
The big one was killing Finwe, High King of the Noldor and father of Feanor.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:41 PM
I think it was BOTH.

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:41 PM
Ungoliant found "foul creatures in spider form" in Nan Dungortheb when she fled there. She mated with them and then devoured them, because, you know, spider.

Varda — Today at 4:41 PM
And no, I'm not wrestling in the diacriticals. Feel free to imagine umlauts over the final e's. : )

Shelob — Today at 4:41 PM
At least that does tell us that Feanor was, even in his folly, of noble spirit.

Varda — Today at 4:42 PM
Thanks, Eonwe.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:42 PM
Yeah...Feanor...noble spitit...but....kinslaying? The Helcaraxe?

@Eonwλ Valar
Ungoliant found "foul creatures in spider form" in Nan Dungortheb when she fled there. She mated with them and then devoured them, because, you know, spider.
Shelob — Today at 4:42 PM
Not all spiders do that. And yes, after that it was called Ered Gorgoroth. The Mountains of Dread.

Varda — Today at 4:42 PM
Feanor had much to recommend him. Was destroyed by his own hubris and yet also by his inability to separate his personal worth from the great works of his hands, the silmarils.

Shelob — Today at 4:43 PM
One can have a noble spirit, yet be utterly corrupted in their actions.

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:43 PM
If any do, that's too many to me, heh. Point is she did though.

Varda — Today at 4:43 PM
Melkor was great, once, but fell to Morgoth.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:43 PM
BTW, in my Chapter 6, I note that the Elves (esp. the Noldor) accounted the Elessar the greatest jewel created by the old jewel-smiths after the Silmarils.
[4:44 PM]
Yeah...jhe fell, alright.

Varda — Today at 4:44 PM
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/e/ElessarStone.htm
    The Elessar Stone
Article concerning the origin and use of the Elessar stone in Tolkien's work. Written for the Vaar Guld Tolkien Encyclopedia.

Shelob — Today at 4:44 PM
Well, wasn't that made by Celebrimbor, son of Curufin?
Son of Feanor.

Varda — Today at 4:45 PM
I refer you to the article and the two different versions.

Shelob — Today at 4:45 PM
The vaar guild?

Varda — Today at 4:45 PM
Egad. a typo. [Note: fixed]

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:45 PM
Two legends: First, Olorin brought the ORIGINAL Elessar BACK to M.E. from Valinor to show Galadriel that the Valar had NOT forgotten M.E..   Second legend: Celebrimbor created Galadriel's  Elessar for her, even though she gave her heart to Celeborn, because Celebrimbor loved her.

Varda — Today at 4:46 PM
Enerdhil was the earliest said to be the maker, later changed the story to Celebrimbor.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:46 PM
I can't type fast enough to keep up with you guys.

Varda — Today at 4:46 PM
Come in late and don't worry about it. : )
We're fine with that.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:46 PM
The two legends appear in the Unfinished Tales as an appendix to the tale of Galadriel and Celeborn.

Shelob — Today at 4:46 PM
That's because we've had a long, long time of practice with these kind of discussions my friend.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:47 PM
I sort of like the first legend first...It would be good for the Valar to let the dwellers on M.E. know that they were NOT forgotten.

Varda — Today at 4:47 PM
Since I wrote the article, it comes to mind rather quickly.

Shelob — Today at 4:47 PM
I joined the Valar Guild back in '99 I think. [Note: correct, joined 1999 as Maedhros.]

Varda — Today at 4:47 PM
They truly were not forgotten.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:48 PM
Yes...but they did not always know that, or feel it.

Varda — Today at 4:48 PM
The Valar tried not to interfere too much, also.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:48 PM
it is the reason i don 't type that much , Sandalf  I am just not fast enough and usually someone sais what I wanted to say anyway

Varda — Today at 4:48 PM
True, Sandalf, most of the time.
Sorry about that, Arien.
Lenwe got tired of trying to keep up too, which makes me sad.

Shelob — Today at 4:48 PM
Heh. I just checked my membership page. Seems I used to be Feanor once. I guess being (sort of) evil was apparent even back then.

Varda — Today at 4:49 PM
I typed as a secretary, hard to remember to slow down properly.
Heh, Shelob.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:49 PM
ah dont .. i can keep up with reading

Varda — Today at 4:49 PM
I liked you as Menelvagor. : )

Shelob — Today at 4:49 PM
I remember back in the old B.net days I used to be able to hold 4 or 5 separate conversations while simultaneously being active in the meeting.

Varda — Today at 4:49 PM
We want to hear from the rest of you too. : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:49 PM
With the shining belt! And Menelvagor is at his best in the night sky, right now.

Varda — Today at 4:49 PM
yep, we do that.
[4:50 PM]
Orion, in his early days.

@Varda
I liked you as Menelvagor. : )
Shelob — Today at 4:50 PM
I have not changed. Not since I joined as Maedhros. I only changed in appearance and well, behaviour I guess. Just like any character in Tolkien's world does over time.

Varda — Today at 4:50 PM
I feel slow now, though. : )

@Varda
I feel slow now, though. : )
Shelob — Today at 4:50 PM
Yeah, same here.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:50 PM
There is something special about watching the stars, especially bright ones like in Menelvagor, on a cold, snowy night....when the stars twinkle in a cloudless sky...

Varda — Today at 4:51 PM
The elves agree with you completely.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:51 PM
((ot remark .. in relation ito some of the constellations in the night sky i highly recommend Clash of the Titans . the original preferrably but the remake a few years back is okay tooo ))

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:51 PM
Yes...and the ground is snowy here right now, at least for a few days more...until the next cycle of warm then snow...

Shelob — Today at 4:52 PM
It's a bit odd that I went from Menelvagor, the belt of Orion, light of the night, to Shelob, obscurer of said light.  [Note: Menelvagor is the entire hunter, not just the belt.]

Varda — Today at 4:52 PM
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/stars.html
    Stars
Articles on the Stars in the sky of Tolkien's Middle-earth

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:52 PM
But as Sam notes in Mordor, there is something beautiful and bright above the darkness of M.E.
That outlasts the gloom...

Shelob — Today at 4:52 PM
Twas me.

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:52 PM
On Clash of the Titans: Bah, who would pass up Ray Harryhausen effects? ;}

Varda — Today at 4:52 PM
Arwen at the end symbolized the removal of the fear of night.
[4:53 PM]
hehe Eonwe

Shelob — Today at 4:53 PM
Although to be fair, twas Varda who created Menelvagor in the first place.

Varda — Today at 4:54 PM
We kind of smudged it to let the constellations and stars be Maia Honor, yep. The stars were ships sailed mainly by Maiar, Earendil excepted.
A whole constellation would have many Maiar in it.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:54 PM
Aiya. Rumors of my death etc etc

Varda — Today at 4:54 PM
Pallando! Huzzah!

Shelob — Today at 4:54 PM
Earendil was part Maia though, so exception is not completely without merit. [Note: this confusion is unwound later.]
[4:54 PM]
Aiya Pallando!

Varda — Today at 4:55 PM
Hey, you're a Vala, never truly die. : )
True, we'll give him part Maia, good point. [Note: not Maia]

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:55 PM
Yes he certainly was...having Dior for a fathger...

Shelob — Today at 4:55 PM
Rumors of my death have also never been confirmed!

Varda — Today at 4:56 PM
We speculate that you ate yourself, just got too hungry. Kind of like Pizza the Hutt in Spaceballs. Sorry, wrong fandom.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:56 PM
Oops...not Dior...he was the father of Elwing. Sorry.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:56 PM
Remember, if there's not a body in front f you that you personally confirmed to be the real corpse, you can't really be sure..

Varda — Today at 4:56 PM
Pallando, you are bound to have tons of news!
[4:56 PM]
And then someone comes along and rezzes the body! (guilty)

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:57 PM
Clerics and gods just can't leave well enough alone, can they?

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:57 PM
Sounds like a quote from the Evil Overlord List?
[Note: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilOverlordList  ]

@Varda
We speculate that you ate yourself, just got too hungry. Kind of like Pizza the Hutt in Spaceballs. Sorry, wrong fandom.
Shelob — Today at 4:57 PM
Kind of like my dear old mommy, who for some odd reason (possibly having been smart enough to get away from her sooner rather than later) did not eat me and then proceeded to eat herself?

Varda — Today at 4:57 PM
We try to back off, but yep, just had to resist.
Have to keep Hunger under control.

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:58 PM
Eat a Snickers instead. (lol)

Shelob — Today at 4:58 PM
I'd rather turn into Betty White. There's honour to be had there!

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:58 PM
I have some news, little of it good, sadly.

Varda — Today at 4:59 PM
Pallando, you're alive and able to type here. That is what we are most happy to see!

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:59 PM
CCP has launched a Doctor Who cross over event in Eve, and it's just.. I dunno. Kinda the last straw for me.

Varda — Today at 4:59 PM
Yikes.
[4:59 PM]
It should pass, eventually, right?

Pallando-Valar — Today at 4:59 PM
I have very few nice things to say about it (or much of what CCP has done recently).
[5:00 PM]
Yes, it'll be over in a couple weeks but it's not good.

Varda — Today at 5:00 PM
Change in management doing this?
Maybe you need a few weeks of LotRO til it blows over.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:00 PM
Maybe. But we're pretty sure it's the same ceo doing dumb things.

Varda — Today at 5:00 PM
ugh

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:01 PM
It's been a longstanding.. gossip? Rumor? Whatever. That eve has pretty much from the start succeeded in spite of the CEO rather than because of him.
[5:01 PM]
And over the years the people who could gainsay him and push the right direction have left

Varda — Today at 5:02 PM
That sounds like a number of groups/businesses, where the group can keep the place operating because they love the concept.
[5:02 PM]
Uh oh.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:02 PM
For awhile he was focused on other side projects and left eve alone
[5:02 PM]
But those all failed and guess that he came back to..
[5:02 PM]
Anyways

Varda — Today at 5:03 PM
o man.
[5:03 PM]
Need to find him a new project again, quick!

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:03 PM
Im alive, even if I'm not enjoying much about Eve.

Varda — Today at 5:03 PM
Keeping your side section of the Eve universe as best you can.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:04 PM
Pardon my naivety...is Eve a game?

Varda — Today at 5:04 PM
Yes

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:04 PM
Been playing a lot of Gloomhaven instead. If anyone else has the digital version and wants to do a campaign I'd love to actually game with some valarites for the first time in a long time. :)

Varda — Today at 5:04 PM
An amazing game in space in the far future.
[5:04 PM]
Ahh interesting. Anyone here play Gloomhaven?
[5:04 PM]
Maybe someone will want to give it a shot.
[5:05 PM]
I'll give an ask to some Valarites downstairs right quick.

Shelob — Today at 5:06 PM
Ask me again in a few weeks Pallando. I might be willing to pick it up. But the coming weeks I have to focus on exams.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:08 PM
I'll be sure to. :)
[5:10 PM]
To be clear while the Dr who event is somewhat badly done it's not that bad in and of itself
[5:10 PM]
Very much a straw on a camels back

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:11 PM
I am afraid gaming will always be beyond me....I don't even own a laptop capable of keeping up with gaming, so so I have been told.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:11 PM
Just depends on what you play. :)

Shelob — Today at 5:11 PM
The game still isn't that bad in and of itself. The only problem is that I can find a lot more games I'd rather spend my time on. One of those, surprisingly enough, is multiplayer OpenTTD.

Varda — Today at 5:11 PM
Aye, depends on the game is all.
[5:11 PM]
What is TTD?

Shelob — Today at 5:11 PM
Transport Tycoon Deluxe.
[5:12 PM]
Originally released in 94, later rereleased as freeware.
[5:13 PM]
Anyways. I think I am going to head to bed.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:13 PM
Namarie, Shelob!

Shelob — Today at 5:13 PM
I think I may or may not have missed the whack of the gavel, but I am fairly sure we've long since passed into after-meeting.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:13 PM
I promise you that your laptop could play, say, diablo 2. ;)

Shelob — Today at 5:14 PM
Namarie!
[5:14 PM]
Your laptop could play OpenTTD!

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:14 PM
I have a new Lenovo ideapad 5 with an i7 processor that I just bought in November to replace my five year old Dell laptop that died...literally.

Varda — Today at 5:14 PM
Namarie, Shelob!

Shelob — Today at 5:15 PM
Anyways. sidles off into the darkness waving goodbye with a fair number of legs

Varda — Today at 5:15 PM
I have not gaveled, as we have not done Gaming yet.
[5:15 PM]
Bye, Spider-thingy.
[5:15 PM]
Although Pallando's report did put us in that subject. Good job.

Pallando-Valar — Today at 5:17 PM
That should run plenty of things, @Sandalf13. I have a whole list of low-req games..

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:18 PM
Please send  me a list, if you have some time to do so. I can try to do some gaming! My E-Mail is: NOSPAMoilinvestor13 (AT) outlook (dot) com
[5:19 PM]
Any low-req Tolkien games?

Varda — Today at 5:19 PM
You can probably do LotRO, just keep the textures down. Try free to play just to take a look.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:20 PM
How would I even start? Is there a fee for LoTRO?

Varda — Today at 5:20 PM
If you do the free to play starter, no cost at all.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:20 PM
Is LoTRO on its own website?

Varda — Today at 5:20 PM
Yes

[5:23 PM]
You have SSD hard drive? That is super for gaming.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:23 PM
Yes...I made sure that my Lenovo has a SSD.

Varda — Today at 5:24 PM
There you go. You may have a better machine than you think.
I use a laptop.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:24 PM
I do not think that I have used up too much of my hard drive yet.
[5:25 PM]
I also back up all my files weekly to a Sandisk SSD.

Varda — Today at 5:25 PM
Very good!

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:26 PM
My laptop has Windows 11. I am still getting used to it. My old laptop was windows 10. There was a little picture you could get under "my computer" that showed how much of your hard drive was used. Is there a similar picture in Windows 11?

Varda — Today at 5:26 PM
Windows 11 is good for gaming.
[5:26 PM]
And yes, you can check your space.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:26 PM
Where?
[5:27 PM]
Settings...

Varda — Today at 5:28 PM
We need to move to the Gaming section of the reports and then shift to After-meeting.

Maybe some side chat will happen. : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:29 PM
Do you think that Ar-Pharazon may appears?

Varda — Today at 5:39 PM

Mine has 120 GB used, 832 GB free.

It's on a bar.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:43 PM
Wow. It says I have already used 134 GB, but I have 334 GB free. I suppose that is good?

Varda — Today at 5:43 PM

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 6:00 PM

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:03 PM
Right caught up at last.
Interesting Shelob topic

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 6:03 PM
Heya Phar

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:04 PM
I'll have to add that since Dior was indeed Elwing's father, I do not think Earendil was in fact part Maia?
[6:05 PM]
And belated Aiya and Namarie to Sandalf, Arien and Shelob! And Aiya Pallando who is presumably still here then.

Varda — Today at 6:06 PM
Hmm, let's fix that on Earendil.
[6:07 PM]
Father was Tuor, human. Mother was Idril, an elf princess.
[6:09 PM]
Tuor was the son of Huor and Rian. Cousin of Turin.
[6:11 PM]
Earendil and Elwing's sons were Elrond and Elros.
[6:15 PM]
Huor's brother was Hurin who was the father of Turin, that's where the "cousin" comes in.
[6:19 PM]
Elwing was the daughter of Dior and Nimloth. This is where some of the confusion comes in when we think of her husband, Earendil.
(as mentioned above)

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:19 PM
'ndeed

Varda — Today at 6:20 PM
This is all especially interesting as Aragorn comes from the line of Elros and Arwen comes from the line of Elros's twin, Elrond.
[6:21 PM]
Dior was the son of Beren and Luthien.
[6:22 PM]
Dior had Edain, Eldar, and Maiar blood that passed to both Aragorn and Arwen.
[6:25 PM]
Beren gave the Edain part, as he was the son of Barahir the Lord of the First House. That's why Aragorn eventually received the Ring of Barahir.
[6:26 PM]
Luthien was the daughter of Thingol and Melian. Ta daa!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:26 PM
Heirlooms tend to not get lost in fantasy tales unless it's really important.

Varda — Today at 6:27 PM
It wasn't just any heirloom either, but the ring of the Lord of the First House, so Aragorn was also receiving the title.
[6:27 PM]
It also held a promise attached to it. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:27 PM
You'd think some brigand would have run off with it over the last thousands of years.
[6:27 PM]
Or it fell down a drain or something.

Varda — Today at 6:28 PM
Have to watch those evil drains!
A signet ring tends to be protected, however.
Of course the One Ring went in the drink so you never know.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:29 PM
Right. Who held Barahir's ring at the time?

Varda — Today at 6:29 PM
Melian, of course, was a Maia. What was she doing in Middle-earth anyway? How common was it for Maiar to hang around Middle-earth? Maybe more than we realize.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:29 PM
Because that one apparently didn't go into the drink.

Varda — Today at 6:30 PM
Aye : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:30 PM
Maiar might have been all over the place. In the rivers, the rocks, sacred hollows in forests....
[6:31 PM]
Melian was an exception mostly because she partnered with a non-Maia.

Varda — Today at 6:31 PM
Barahir, Beren, Dior, Elwing and Earendil, Elrond.
[6:31 PM]
Not that long a chain of holders, just long-lived.
[6:32 PM]
Aye about Melian - no longer just back in the woods.
[6:32 PM]
Ok, we fixed that mess. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:33 PM
Wait, the ring went to Elrond?
[6:33 PM]
Then how'd Aragorn get it again?

Varda — Today at 6:34 PM
He [Elrond] was a son of Elwing and Earendil. Well, it could have gone to Elros, now you're making me look it up. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:34 PM
If Elros, it would've had a lot more owners.
In fact, it would have gone down Silmarien's line?

Varda — Today at 6:35 PM
Given to Beren by Finrod as his pledge to aid Beren and his kin.
[6:36 PM]
Ok, it was held by the Faithful, so it had to have gone to Elros, not Elrond. Good catch.
Arvedui gave it to the chief of the Lossoth.
[6:37 PM]
It was later ransomed and kept at Rivendell, thus Elrond.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:37 PM
Aha.

Varda — Today at 6:37 PM
So Elrond kept it for the Dunedain Chieftains until the High King appeared and could rightfully take it.
[6:38 PM]
So it was held by both lines from Earendil: Elros and then Elrond. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:38 PM
True  Though I suppose Elrond was more of a.. steward, I suppose

Varda — Today at 6:39 PM
Aye. And he held a batch of the other heirlooms in waiting.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:39 PM
This belongs in a museum!
"I am a museum!"

Varda — Today at 6:40 PM
It was for his brother's sake at first, I would imagine, with a fondness developing over time for all those descendants of his brother Elros that Elrond taught and acted as an old folk's home for.
heh
Rivendell was a safe place for a lot of great bling. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:40 PM
Yep. And on some occasions, so was the bottom of the sea.

Varda — Today at 6:40 PM
True, that.
[6:41 PM]
Ulmo probably had a good idea where those items were.
[6:41 PM]
Thus, he rigged it so Bilbo would find the One Ring, you reckon?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:42 PM
Maybe he gathers them and ships em off to Valinor, and they go "Ooh, you found a silmaril" or "Hey, is that a Palantir?"

Varda — Today at 6:42 PM
Certainly hobbits were the only ones to have their hands on it.
Deagol, Smeagol, Bilbo, Frodo, Sam.
heh

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:42 PM
Hmm. Not sure what he could do in Smeagol's cave to get it to Bilbo, but certainly getting it in a hobbit's hands from the river might be partly his doing.

Varda — Today at 6:43 PM
Tricky. Gollum lived on an underground island, surrounded by water that Ulmo would know.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:43 PM
Though Smeagol was not quite the intended personality.

Varda — Today at 6:43 PM
A conduit.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:43 PM
True, but he lost it in the tunnel.

Varda — Today at 6:43 PM
But only shortly before Bilbo came upon it.
Possibly lost as soon as Bilbo was inside the mountain.
[6:44 PM]
Sauron was calling it and all evil things in. At the same time, Bilbo was set to interfere. No orc picked it up, but a hobbit.
It was trying to leave Gollum to reach Sauron.
[6:45 PM]
An orc was the most likely to pick it up. Who could expect a hobbit?
Just because they are in burrows and hard to spot...

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:46 PM
Did Ulmo have some part in getting Bilbo to the cave?
I don't remember if it was raining.

Varda — Today at 6:46 PM
Gandalf was there.
They were taking refuge in the cave. Was it raining? Interesting!
[6:47 PM]
The Valar were probably watching Gandalf's progress. GPS in his staff? : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:47 PM
When eagles won't do, Manwe might have flies to do his spying.

Varda — Today at 6:47 PM
He uses birds. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:48 PM
Anyone noticed a bird nearby the cave?

Varda — Today at 6:48 PM
Radagast may have had more going on in the story than we realize. And that gives more interest to the Thrush and such.
Who would notice? : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:49 PM
Reminds me of Game of Thrones' Varys with his "little birds"...

Varda — Today at 6:49 PM
Hobbit: "Over Hill and Under Hill". It was more than rain, it was a storm!
Well figured, Phar!
[6:50 PM]
Human birds, those.
Manwe's could actually fly. Very convenient.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:50 PM
Ah! Manwe and Ulmo conspired to send them to Gollum's cave, hoping Gandalf'd see em through so Bilbo could find the Ring.

Varda — Today at 6:50 PM
Bilbo was "meant to find the Ring".
It was no accident.
[6:51 PM]
Now we have some mechanics of how it was rigged.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:51 PM
Little prods here and there, rolls of the dice...

Varda — Today at 6:51 PM
Weighted dice. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:51 PM
The Valar work in mysteirous ways.
*mysterious

Varda — Today at 6:51 PM
tum-te-tum
[6:52 PM]
Ok, that was one of the most fun short discussions in a while, and we've had a lot of fun ones so that's saying a lot.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 6:52 PM
grin that's kinda how I'd imagine evolution and creation could work together. A god who sets the rules for random mutation and just occasionally influences the dice...

Varda — Today at 6:53 PM
I would not argue with that. I've been calling it gently guided evolution. : )

[8:02 PM]
An adventure/dialogue game where you have to search a town to fix problems for ghosts who can then pass on, so you can collect money and get out of the town yourself. Pretty cutesy.
[8:03 PM]
For actual flashgaming for once, I'll just say that I've been exploring the Flashpoint app (an archive player to be able to play flashgames) a bit for games of ye olden days that I liked.
In doing so I found Memohuntress, a lovely atmospheric hidden object game that was removed from Kongregate years ago, wherein you have to wander through several levels to find all the missing items and make enough money to get home.
Also the "loops of zen" series, a puzzle game where you have to rotate tiles with patterns on them to connect them all together and have no loose ends remaining. I didn't even know there were 5 in the series, I'm now at the second :)
And also in flashpoint I finished Papa's Pizzeria and moved on to Papa's Burgeria, where you have to grill and build hamburgers for a variety of customers, as a time management game  As one who likes his regular hamburger but doesn't like pizza, playing Burgeria actually makes me hungry :)

Hearthstone tavern brawl for this week is Captain Blackheart's Treasure; you get a deck full of 2/3 stat pirates and instead of drawing every turn, you get to discover one of 3 random cards. The pirates are for when you use draw cards, I guess.

WoW: (edited)
[8:17 PM]
For raiding we got the first 8 bosses down, but will be extending the raid to work on the last 2, Kel'thuzad and Sylvanas on heroic. Most of us have most of our gear anyway at heroic level anyway, I think I'm only missing one ring myself.
[8:17 PM]
In fact, I was missing 2 rings, but got lucky with the dungeon weekly quest, as I happened to get one of the rings from the reward
[8:18 PM]
Bought a new mount for anima, the Silky Shimmermoth, last of the moth mounts I was missing. It matches my moth flightform as well, in colorscheme.
[8:21 PM]
And finally, poked the rogue a lot! Finished the class campaign, went all the way up to and including the classmount - Shadowblade's Murderous Omen (a silent raven) - and got to 47 along the way. After the mount I decided to continue Stormheim until 48, where I completed some stormdrake quests and now find myself in the woods to the northeast, only about 1 quest away from 48. So next week we'll get that done and then I'm heading fulltime into the mage.
[8:21 PM]
And that's my report for the week!
