Varda 12/04/2022 4:00 PM
Great to see you, Sandalf and Ar-Pharazon!
[4:01 PM]
I need to add a couple of wings to mine, yep.
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 4:01 PM
Better to be early than late, "but later is better than never," as
per Tolkien.
Varda 12/04/2022 4:01 PM
So true!
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 4:01 PM
Also something about never being early or late, but always being
there right when you intend to
Varda 12/04/2022 4:02 PM
@Bounder Hurray! Time for saying hi to old friends, chatting
gaming and Tolkien! Come on to the Valar Guild meeting_place when

Any membership news you'd like to pass along?
[4:03 PM]
(I will be right back and read it!)
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 4:03 PM
Ar and I were exchanging notes about the US-Netherlands Mens'
World Cup game yesterday.
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 4:04 PM
Big country you may be, but when it comes to some sports...
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 4:04 PM
You got that right, pardner...
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 4:05 PM
Your female team has certainly done much better the last few
years.
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 4:05 PM

back
[4:07 PM]
Enjoyed being with a lot of Fangorn's family yesterday, all good
people!
[4:08 PM]
And we all brought lots of food, so that even with twenty people
we had too much! Fun times.
Bingo Christmas party. Four hour drive there, four hours back, but
worth it.
Any other news?
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 4:08 PM
Sounds good!
Varda 12/04/2022 4:08 PM

Sandalf said to go ahead and show you the new chapter that we've
been working on. There may be a few more tweaks, but you get first
look!

"The Geology of Middle-earth"!
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/papers/Sandalf13/3GeologyofMiddle-earth.htm
[4:16 PM]
This is serious work, educational in a lot of ways.
If you find tweaks to make where we missed, please let us know
when you can!
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 4:17 PM
As I said in the foreword to the book, this chapter has been a
part of my life for over 50 years...since the time of my
graduation from Lafayette College in 1971, the same time that I
went on active duty in the Navy. I am glad to see it finally "in
print!"
Varda 12/04/2022 4:20 PM
Yay!
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 4:21 PM
References, maps, I like it
Varda 12/04/2022 4:21 PM
hehe
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 4:22 PM
Thanks! I hope that others like it as well. Let your friends know
that it is out there! As far as I can tell, this may be one of the
few works that deal with such an arcane aspect of the LoTR!
[4:22 PM]
And it WAS reviewed by two other professional geologists!
Varda 12/04/2022 4:27 PM
We hope to get any other small bits fixed this week, and I intend
to be linking it into the site as well this week.
Waiting until the thick of Christmas activities would not be a
good move. ; )
Eonwe is hoping to be here, but may be late.

There's a Shire rock. : )
New one.
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 4:44 PM
While thinning out my stuff in my storage locker this past week
(despite the cold), I found this specimen in one of my rock boxes.
It shows several crystals growing out of a quartz matrix. I
collected this specimen from a pegmatite in the Etta Mine near the
Black Hills of South Dakota. Tourmaline is one of the most
complicated minerals in the silicate family, as it has a highly
variable chemistry and can contain many rare earth elements, but
not always. Anyway, the specimen is surprisingly heavy for it
size, suggesting the presence of heavier elements in it. The
crystals are actually quite pretty.
[4:44 PM]
Since we were talking about geology....hope you don't mind, but I
couldn't resist a show and tell.
Varda 12/04/2022 4:48 PM
This is also nice for using some of the terms you were teaching us
in the Geology chapter. : )

Lovely! Thank you for showing it to us.

Sandalf13 12/04/2022 4:50 PM
I think Tolkien probably liked rocks, too.

I have a Tolkien Moment for you. A win!
[4:53 PM]
Return of the King, "The Tower of Cirith Ungol"
(After Sam took Frodo from the tower)
Quote:
Before they even reached
the archway they were brought to a stand. To move an inch
further was a pain and weariness to will and limb.
Frodo had no strength for such a
battle. He sank to the ground. "I can't go on, Sam," he
murmured. "I'm going to faint. I don't know what's come over
me."
"I do, Mr. Frodo. Hold up now! It's
the gate. There's some deviltry there. But I got through, and
I'm going to get out. It can't be more dangerous than before.
Now for it!"
Sam drew out the elven-glass of
Galadriel again. As if to do honour to his hardihood, and to
grace with splendour his faithful brown hobbit-hand that had
done such deeds, the phial blazed forth suddenly, so that all
the shadowy court was lit with a dazzling radiance like
lightning; but it remained steady and did not pass.
"Gilthoniel, A Elbereth!" Sam
cried. For, why he did not know, his thought sprang back
suddenly to the Elves in the Shire, and the song that drove away
the Black Rider in the trees.
"Aiya eleinion ancalima!"
cried Frodo once again behind him.
The will of the Watchers was broken
with a suddenness like the snapping of a cord, and Frodo and Sam
stumbled forward.
Then they ran. Through the gate and
past the great seated figures with their glittering eyes.
There was a crack.
The keystone of the arch crashed
almost on their heels, and the wall above crumbled, and fell in
ruin.
Only by a hair did they escape. A
bell clanged; and from the Watchers there went up a high and
dreadful wail. ...
End quote.
[5:02 PM]
That is a bit of a forwarning to Sauron about what's coming.
The place crashing down.
Ok, we have reached the hour.
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 5:02 PM
Yes, it did remind me of Barad-dur.
Varda 12/04/2022 5:02 PM
the gavel runs like mad holding a flashlight
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 5:02 PM
Perhaps building structures on a foundation of dark magic rather
than, say, concrete, is not a very good long-term idea.

Dark magic is bad grout or underpinning, you say?
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 5:04 PM
One of the points that I will be making in my "Introduction,"
(Influences on Tolkien), is that he was very much into
cyclicity...the musical idiom of cyclicity was best exemplified by
Cesar Franck, a late-Romantic French (Belgian) composer. IT is not
unusual for Tolkien to introduce a theme early in the LoTR and
bring it back again and again, with modifications. Ar's point is
extremely prescient!
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 5:04 PM
It may last a while, when its antithesis isn't around, but once it
is, things go downhill fast.
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 5:05 PM
The crashing of the gate is a harbinger of the crashing of Barad
Due, later in the epic..
Varda 12/04/2022 5:05 PM
It's like ever-increasing waves of water, hard to notice at first,
then crashing down.
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 5:05 PM
I am amazed that as smart as Sauron was supposed to be (he was a
Maia,, after all), he was pretty dumb not to see what was going to
happen to him and all his efforts...
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 5:06 PM
He was certainly not in a habit of planning for failure.
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 5:06 PM
I just thought about the cyclicity thing...what about the crashing
down of the Barrow Wights cave by Tom Bombadil? That occurs even
earlier in the story...another crashing event.
[5:07 PM]
Then the crashing of the bride in Khazad-dum....hey, the
possibilities are endless!
bridge, not bride!
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 5:08 PM
Crashing of the bride sounds like a wedding tradition.
Isn't there some ceremony where they put her up on a chair?
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 5:08 PM
Yes there certainly is.
And the groom as well....
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 5:08 PM
Crashing might happen!
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 5:09 PM
There you go....

Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 6:02 PM
Darth Father...
Eonwλ Valar 12/04/2022 6:04 PM
Just something very wholesome and fun to see about how excited he
is to be a father.
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 6:05 PM
Vader is Dutch for father, so I could've seen the twist coming a
mile away if I wasn't as young the first time I saw it.
Eonwλ Valar 12/04/2022 6:06 PM
If memory serves, it wasn't part of the plan until they were
making The Empire Strikes Back.
[6:07 PM]
That's why they had to go with the whole "from a certain point of
view" speech in Return of the Jedi to justify Obiwan telling Luke
Vader killed Anakin.
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 6:08 PM
Rather than telling him he had pretty much killed him before he
turned Vader.
Eonwλ Valar 12/04/2022 6:11 PM
Bah, trying to remember the spoiler tag...
[6:13 PM]
I also find hilarious the part where Luke
tries to fall down the shaft and Vader stops him with the Force.
[6:14 PM]
Don't click on the above without watching the video, hehehe. [Note:
run your mouse over the area between 6:13 PM and 6:14 PM to see.]
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 6:14 PM
Heh, yes. That's something that really should've happened
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 6:52 PM
Aiya! I am back, sort of...I am at the Tel Mill reviewing and
proofreading Chapter 3 for Varda...sort of keeping up with your
conversation at the same time. Funny video. I saw the ORIGINAL
Star Wars when it first appeared in June, 1977...just a few weeks
before the birth of my oldest daughter....Long before Star Wars
was a "big thing."
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 7:16 PM
I apologize if I stifled the ongoing conversation.
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 7:16 PM
There hadn't been for over half an hour :)
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 7:18 PM
OK then. I guess I shouldn't feel bad! Are you still going to your
personal gaming report?
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 7:18 PM
Yep, in a few minutes
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 7:19 PM
Great! I will keep checking and reading as I work! A good night to
be inside at the Mill. Cold outside, but we are still stuck in a
very severe drought. No Snow...and nothing expected for the next
30 days. Very very unusual, and very scary as well. No water!
Eonwλ Valar 12/04/2022 7:20 PM
I might've tried going to see it when it first came out, but I had
trouble finding a ride to the theater, what with me not being born
yet and all.
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 7:20 PM
I can only imagine. He he....or ha ha.
[7:21 PM]
It is tough not being born yet.
Ar-Pharazon-V 12/04/2022 7:21 PM
I can't remember what it was like
Eonwλ Valar 12/04/2022 7:21 PM
Miss out on alot tjat way.
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 7:22 PM
Maybe that is a good thing....just the other day there was an
article on why young children universally forget the memories of
their first two years or so...by the time they reach the age of 6
or 7, those earliest memories are already GONE. It seems that our
long-lasting memories only begin about the same time that we learn
to talk...there is obviously a connection somehow.
Eonwλ Valar 12/04/2022 7:25 PM
Yeah, probably better not to remember that first year or so.
Sandalf13 12/04/2022 8:31 PM
I am done for the night at the Tel Mill, and need to head out once
again into the cold night to drive home. A busy week ahead for me.
I hope you are all well and enjoying life! Take care and sei

[9:42 PM]
Hearthstone:
146 on the reward track, and with expansion in a few days, that's
where it'll stay New track about to begin! Also a new event
with it, with a series of quests and rewards along a small track.
And I've got enough gold to buy the set coming with it as well.
[9:43 PM]
Brawl is Hallucinations: Choose a class, get some random class
cards and a bunch of Hallucinations, cards which let you discover
a card from the opponent's class.
Priest goes well with everything, but honestly, all classes can
work, and it often depends on your opponent's class as well. I won
a few with mage just because I had a quest to do arcane damage as
well.
[9:44 PM]
WoW:
[9:45 PM]
No normal raiding yet (nor could I if there was, I'm not max
level), but did get 2 more weapons from Siege of Orgrimmar,
including the long-awaited fist weapon (the only one I was still
missing on the druid) and the gun, so from next week I'll be
bringing the paladin instead of the rogue to pick up all plate
armor pieces, shields and any remaining weapons she can still get.
[9:48 PM]
No weekly quests yet. I also couldn't do the brawl, since that's
level 70 now.
The item from the Jailer to get mount is still in my bags after
launch, so that's good Mount will be mine eventually.
[9:50 PM]
I haven't been to the Dragon Isles yet, as explained earlier in
the meeting. I like to sit back, let the early floods of players
pass, wait out a bunch of inevitable quest bug fixes, and see
whether wowpedia starts putting up the storylines so I know I
don't miss anything or do stuff out of order.
Much of the bulk of that waiting seems to be over, and while I'm
busy tomorrow, I'm planning on getting on the boat on tuesday.
[9:51 PM]
In the meantime I've been doing some catching up on the web,
including some Dragonflight interviews, so I didn't spent too much
questing anyway... but I did send the mage back to Bastion, where
she completed the Temple of Purity questline, before visiting
mirrors and vaults to find some answers about the Forsworn from a
shade's memory.
[9:52 PM]
And with my druid going to the Dragon Isles, that's where it'll
probably stay for a while.
And that's my report for the week!

Varda Today at 9:18 AM
Actually, despite that article about children universally
forgetting their first two years, Fangorn and I both remember
things from our first two years.
[9:22 AM]
Fangorn and I saw the first Star Wars at the theater in a town
near where we were going to college. The first time we came out
into the night after a rain with everything all shiny; we were so
jazzed. (Slang for happy and excited). We talked about the movie
all the miles back. Over time we'd pick out something we'd
had a question about and go back to see the movie again to check.
We saw it seven times that way.

Hallo Varda!
Varda Today at 9:34 AM
Aiya Sandalf : )
Sandalf13 Today at 9:35 AM
I am almost done proofreading Chapter 3! I hope to get the
corrections to you later today. My first confirmable memory goes
back to when I was three years old...and it is hazy, but real. I
remember only a few things from those first few years...nothing
really before 3.
Varda Today at 9:35 AM
Good to hear about ch 3 and about having memories!
Sandalf13 Today at 9:35 AM
Every now and again a mental image flashes across my mind, but I
cannot pin it down to a date or anything...don't know if it was
real or not.
Varda Today at 9:36 AM
Being in diapers is a clue. ; )
[Note: convo goes on about the memory subject but we'll let
you dig it out of Discord if you want more. Not relevant to the
meeting by this time.]
