Sandalf13 — Today at 4:12 PM
Yes. I bought a house in Thornton, Colorado, just north of Denver last week. I will be moving into my brand new home on 3 January, if all goes well.  i have been planning on doing this for several years, and the time became right when my apartment complex evicted ALL of the last tenants in the complex so they can renovate ALL the apartments at one time.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:13 PM
oh wow, congratulations sandalf

Varda — Today at 4:13 PM
That sounds like a major upwards move! Grats on leveling your housing!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:13 PM

[4:15 PM]
So I won't have a hole to climb into!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:16 PM
Time to diggy hole then.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:16 PM

Varda — Today at 4:17 PM
If we had a basement, it would fill with water. : )
At least a crawl space lets you reach the pipes without too much digging.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:18 PM
Yup. Did anyone else watch the Word Cup final today? It was a VERY exciting game.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:19 PM
My parents did, I wasn't that interested. Caught a few moments around goal 2, I think.

Varda — Today at 4:19 PM
Afraid not a sports fan, although games were playing on two screens at the restaurant after the movie.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:20 PM
I haven't really watched any of the matches, even for Dutch matches I just came around for the repeat if my dad said there was a goal.l

Varda — Today at 4:21 PM
Hope you had a good time watching them, Sandalf

Tolkien!

[4:35 PM]
Before I start off, does anyone have a Tolkien topic of some sort you'd like to mention, or question?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:35 PM
(just walked past my dad watching darts on tv; player called Baggish - so close!)

Varda — Today at 4:35 PM
: )
[4:36 PM]
I usually prefer throwing darts at targets, but the TV does cry for it sometimes. ; )
Baggish, hah! Bilboh or Froda?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:36 PM
Haven't asked
[4:37 PM]
googles
Danny. How disappointing.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:37 PM
Froda is very close to Frieda...a proper German name.

Varda — Today at 4:38 PM
Froda was an actual king, peace-loving.
[4:39 PM]
Anyway, the movies tend to mess with memories. This includes the Path of the Dead section.
The book is quite different in a lot of ways.
[4:40 PM]
It's in the RotK, "The Passing of the Grey Company", if anyone has their book handy and wants to take a look.
Who was with Aragorn on the Paths of the Dead?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:40 PM
Skulls, skulls, everywhere... what happened to all the rest of the skeletons?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:40 PM
30 men of the Dunedain, Elladan and Elrohir, Legolas, Gimli.

Varda — Today at 4:41 PM
Aye.
aye to Sandalf, that is. : )
Suppose they had a room for legs, and another for arms too?
[4:42 PM]
Who led the Grey Company?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:42 PM
Probably! Whose job is it to sort them out, I wonder.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:42 PM
Halabarad, Ranger of the North.

Varda — Today at 4:42 PM
(to Aragorn, I mean)
Aye!
We get to meet him in LotRO, by the way. : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:43 PM
Until he met up with Aragorn, that is, then I would assume, based on my military experience, that command would have passed to Aragorn.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:43 PM
Do you help with the banner?

Varda — Today at 4:43 PM
Aragorn had not summoned them. Who did they speculate did call them?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:43 PM
Galadriel.

Varda — Today at 4:43 PM
Agreed, Sandalf. That seemed to be what was shown.
[4:43 PM]
Aye. Gimli first speculated Gandalf, but with a little thought, they agreed it had to be Galadriel.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:43 PM
See Chapter 6 in my book....sort of gets into that a bit.

Varda — Today at 4:44 PM
: )
The Geology chapter does too. : )
The Rangers were thirty strong, with spears, and were mounted on rough-haired horses that were strong and proud.
The Rangers wore hooded cloaks of dark grey, pinned at the left shoulder with a silver brooch like a rayed star.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:45 PM
And the Men of Rohan looked like boys beside them.

Varda — Today at 4:45 PM
Aye : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:45 PM
And they brought Aragorn's own horse along, for the ride...

Varda — Today at 4:45 PM
Roheryn : )
[4:45 PM]
"Horse of the Lady"

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:45 PM
No more nine walkers.

Varda — Today at 4:46 PM
Aye, Phar, until they reached the tunnel. Then they needed to lead the horses a good way.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:46 PM
I wonder whether Arwen or Galadriel gave it to him

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:46 PM
The Dunedain did not say much at all, but were respectful and courteous in their speech, as would be expected, when they were questioned.

Varda — Today at 4:46 PM
The horse was from Arwen, apparently.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:46 PM
ah right , hence the name

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:47 PM
I don't think they passed by Lorien.

Varda — Today at 4:47 PM
The sons of Elrond came too. Looked a little different.
They were in gear less sombre. They wore bright mail hidden under cloaks of silver-grey.
Halbarad brought something physical made by Arwen. What was it?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:48 PM
A banner!

Varda — Today at 4:48 PM
Aye : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:48 PM
(yay, I got one)

Varda — Today at 4:48 PM
Have to type fast around here!

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:48 PM
The kingly banner showing the White Tree, Seven Stars above it, and the crown of Gondor..

Varda — Today at 4:48 PM
Right. And furled, it appeared dark.
[4:49 PM]
Lots of contrast when unfurled.
Halbarad also brought a message from Arwen. What was it concerning?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:49 PM
I believe that is WAS unfurled at the Stone of Erech, but it was so dark, no one could see it at all...
Now is the time, or all our hope is lost.

Varda — Today at 4:50 PM
Good synopsis.
"The days now are short. Either our hope cometh, or all hope's end. Therefore I send thee what I have made for thee. Fare well, Elfstone!"
[4:51 PM]
Elrohir brought a message from their father to Aragorn, giving part of it aloud where all could hear, and a bit more in private.  Remember this meeting was before the realization of how long the Rohirric muster and travel would be.
What was it about? (General is fine.)

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:51 PM
0
00..
[4:52 PM]
Remember the paths of the dead.

Varda — Today at 4:52 PM
Aye : )
[4:53 PM]
We remember and keep far away. Got it!

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:53 PM
the dead seemed to be able to see it or at least knew its meaning

Varda — Today at 4:53 PM
But Aragorn had a little confab with Sauron over the ownership of a palantir. All of a sudden, time crunched.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:53 PM
The banner?

Varda — Today at 4:53 PM
Aye, Arien.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:53 PM
Until Aragorn wrested control of the Palantir from Sauron in the Hornburg, and saw the absolute necessity of taking the Paths of the Dead. He was NOT anxious to do so, at first.

Varda — Today at 4:54 PM
Oh sorry. I'll give more on the message.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:54 PM
Sorry. I am too slow
In more ways than one!

Varda — Today at 4:54 PM
Not at all. : )
And right, Sandalf.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:54 PM
noone types faster than varda so no worries , sandalf

Varda — Today at 4:54 PM
Elrohir in public said: "The days now are short. Either our hope cometh, or all hope's end. Therefore I send thee what I have made for thee. Fare well, Elfstone!"
[4:55 PM]
Then later, we get more of the message:
"But Aragorn remember the words of the seer, and the Paths of the Dead."

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:55 PM
Good old Malbeth the Seer!

Varda — Today at 4:55 PM
Aye : )
This referred to Malbeth the Seer, in the days of Arvedui who was the last king at Fornost.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:55 PM
Who was Malbeth the seer for?

Varda — Today at 4:56 PM
Arvedui.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:56 PM
I guess he didn't give Arvedui such good advice...

Varda — Today at 4:56 PM
(Meet Arvedui's ghost by a beached shipwreck in Forochel in LotRO.)
Arvedui got in a hurry to go home. : )
[4:57 PM]
The quote is given, a bit long, about the oathbreakers and the Stone of Erech coming to the horn of the heir of the one to whom they swore.
It's worth looking at in the book, if you have it handy.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:58 PM
Elrohir gave a little silver horn to Aragorn to blow....HAd Elrond been keeping that horn all of this time, for this very purpose? I wonder.

Varda — Today at 4:58 PM
LIkely since he had a ton of the heirlooms.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:58 PM
All kept for when they'd be most needed
[4:59 PM]
Quite a hoarder.

Varda — Today at 4:59 PM
Right!
Being a bit of a seer himself, foresighted.
I believe Sandalf has a foresight essay in the works too. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:59 PM
"Elrond, why don't we get rid of some of this stuff?" "Nope, the heir might still come around!"

Varda — Today at 5:00 PM
But its been decades! Reasons Celebrian really left Rivendell.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:00 PM
I suspect that Imladris had plenty of room for massive storage units all over the place...

Varda — Today at 5:00 PM
Aye - or they could ask for more to be made as needed. : )
Back to why Aragorn wanted to go to the Paths of the Dead, or at least had to,
due to a convo with Sauron.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:01 PM
I suspect that they had an entire Quality Control system in place, that included annual inventories....especially knowing that Erestor would be a big part of that effort.

Varda — Today at 5:01 PM
Likely. : )
Before they went in, Aragorn in private
[5:02 PM]
told Legolas and Gimli that he had barely wrested the palantir from Sauron's control,
appearing in "other guise" as the Heir of High King Isildur and showed the reforged sword that had cut away Sauron's finger that had carried the One Ring.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:02 PM
"I thought that my strength was enough, and it was, barely...." a paraphrase.

Varda — Today at 5:02 PM
aye : )
This action should cause a hasty strike.
[5:03 PM]
Aragorn also picked up information from Sauron about a foe that would draw away great strength from Minas Tirith (the Corsair fleet),
that if not countered would wipe out Minas Tirith in about ten days or sooner.
So he needed speed.
Yet the Grey Company and the remaining Companions were not enough to stop that, so he needed to gather another army.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:03 PM
It has been pointed out by many commentators that even Gandalf recognized that Aragorn more-or-less took control of the West's strategy once he revealed himself to Sauron.

Varda — Today at 5:04 PM
Aye. He let the others do their thing and coordinated, such as this bit where he had to stop the Corsairs.
That had to be done between the muster of Rohan and arriving at Minas Tirith.
So Aragorn got speed from the Paths of the Dead, and an army of the Oathbreakers.
He found a historically important body in the Paths of the Dead (another subject) and that's where he called to the Oathbreakers.
"Keep your hoards and your secrets hidden in the Accursed Years! Speed only we ask. Let us pass, and then come! I summon you to the Stone of Erech!"

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:06 PM
Baldor son of Brego?

Varda — Today at 5:07 PM
Correct!
Then the whispers stopped, then a chill blast that blew out the torches that could not be relit.
It had to be incredibly dark.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:07 PM
Whoopee! and this is all from memory....maybe I am not senile yet.

Varda — Today at 5:07 PM
Not hardly senile. : )
They continue and  eventually hear a little water falling, and a bit of light.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:08 PM
Blackroot, Men call it.

Varda — Today at 5:08 PM
They come to another gateway and a rill ran beside them, and a road between sheer cliffs so deep and narrow that the sky was dark with small stars glinting.
It was still two hours ere sunset of the day on which they had set out.
But they're not out yet.
The company mounted again, for speed, with the Dead following.
[5:09 PM]
They finally come out of a crack in the wall at the uplands of a great vale (the Morthond Vale, where many Men lived) and the stream beside them ran cold down into it in many falls, as the Morthond River that flowed to the sea.
They had to ride fast to reach the Stone of Erech before the day ended.
They were terrifying as they rushed through the humans living in the vale.
Aragorn was called the King of the Dead.
[5:10 PM]
I wish they had shown the book version in the movie, heh. That would have been fabulous to see.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:10 PM
Too dark, probably, can't get the lighting right

Varda — Today at 5:11 PM
The Oathbreakers do swear at the Stone of Erech, no one broke their neck or a  horse leg in a gopher hole.

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:11 PM
Morthond is the local name

Varda — Today at 5:11 PM
Ghost light!
Aye

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:11 PM
Imagine a dimly light, almost pitch black tunnel with 30 people in dark grey cloaks and a folded banner.
*dimly lit

Varda — Today at 5:11 PM
Even the banner is dark. : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:12 PM
I don't think that'd be very helpful on screen.

Varda — Today at 5:12 PM
The white cow in the snowstorm problem? : )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:13 PM
I know the tale as a polar bear

Varda — Today at 5:13 PM
Ahh, same idea, regional difference. : )

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:13 PM
reminds me of the old postcard joke completely black saying black cavern by night or something like that

Varda — Today at 5:13 PM
heh : )
Carlsbad Cavens with the lights out. They used to do that. Amazing!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:14 PM
Make sure to take a picture

Varda — Today at 5:14 PM
heheh

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:14 PM
The famous postcard...In big, colorful letters on an entirely black background, it reads  "Lincoln, Nebraska after dark"

Varda — Today at 5:14 PM
hah

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:14 PM
hehe

Varda — Today at 5:15 PM
So, the Oathbreakers with all their apparent equipment couldn't hurt anything. How did they manage to run the Corsairs off their ships?

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:15 PM
They needed nothing besides fear...

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:15 PM
That helps.

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 5:16 PM
I must be off. Take care all, good night, sleep well, and have fun.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:16 PM
Namarie, Eonwe!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:16 PM
Perhaps that is one reason they didn't bother coming along to Minas Tirith and beyond. Orcs less susceptible to fear.

Varda — Today at 5:16 PM
Namarie!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:16 PM
Namarie!

Varda — Today at 5:16 PM
It is past the hour. : )
The biggest worry that Aragorn had was the Corsairs siphoning off the defence from Minas Tirith.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:16 PM
I did like Gimli's comment in the movies, hwoever..."Useful fellows in a pinch..."  or something like that.

Varda — Today at 5:16 PM
He got rid of that problem and saved the whole war.
[5:17 PM]
hehe, aye.
The ones attacking Minas Tirith, such as the Nazgul, used Dread as a major weapon.
[5:18 PM]
So aye, those forces would not have been as vulnerable as the sailors. Guess they might be a tad superstitious for good reason.
Anyway, that was the topic for tonight. Enjoy continuing to chew and munch on the subject in After-meeting if you like! Lots to play with.
[5:19 PM]
the gavel runs and hides under the hammerpad, startling it
the hammerpad bonks the gavel on the head
bonnnk!

After-meeting!

[5:19 PM]
Free chat. Or grab a bite to eat. Or sleep. Or game. Or whatever. : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:21 PM
I am off to the Tel Mill to work on....wait for it....Tolkien! But first I need to stop at Hy Vee to get some half and half for my morning coffee this week. The temperature Wed night will be minus 13 F, and Thursday night is supposed to be minus 18F...the high Thursday will be minus 1 F...I may not be going out for coffee at 0530....
Too cold to snow here.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:21 PM
Hmm. Over here it's barely freezing at night, and in a few days temperature's going up again.
No white christmas, probably.
[5:22 PM]
Not that we expect any anymore

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:23 PM
it was a week freezing here and snow
now it is warmer again and the ice is melting
[5:24 PM]

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:25 PM
Drive safely!

Varda — Today at 5:32 PM
Ice, bleah. All the sliding from so many who aren't familiar with it.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:33 PM
Like our cat shakes head

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:38 PM

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 9:01 PM
Right. Some two and a half hours after intended, let's do the personal gaming report
[9:02 PM]
For (non)flashgaming, several good classics as badges this week, so somewhat randomly... I'll give
https://www.kongregate.com/games/targaciej/naboki
    Kongregate
    NABOKI
    Disassemble puzzle.
    More levels: NABOKI.eu

[9:04 PM]
A relaxing puzzle game where you have to click arrows on boxes to disassemble a puzzle in the direction of the arrow.
You can turn the puzzle in all directions to figure out which ones can be removed next.
[9:05 PM]
Later mechanics involve levers, individual rotations, and other patterns to solve.
No timer involved, not too much out of the box logic, just keep exploring and thinking and you'll get there

[9:10 PM]
Blizzard gaming:
[9:12 PM]
Hearthstone:
Level 41 on the reward track now, things are leveling out when it comes to experience requirements. Got a few more packs and cards along the track, always nice.
I've now well over 200 packs to open, gets a bit daunting. I keep forgetting. I think I haven't in a year or so.
[9:13 PM]
Probably longer, since I don't even buy packs, they just pile up from events, reward tracks etc.
[9:14 PM]
Completed the Lich King's Call event, the 2-week quest event and reward track for the start of the expansion, with a day or 2 to spare
That got me a few more signature-framed cards, and the Lich King card back.
[9:15 PM]
Normal questing can continue!
[9:16 PM]
Brawl is one of my favorites, Battle  of the Bans. Make a deck of 4 unique cards. Opponent gets to ban one of them, you get a deck of 10 each of the remaining cards.
Some silly combos are possible, but it's also fun to experiment. I needed a few Death Knight quests this week, so made an odd Unholy specced DK deck, which went ok if I didn't face more horrible opponents' decks
[9:17 PM]
I even made a rather expensive paladin deck for a holy damage quest, which not only managed to win once, but also get about 80 damage done in one game.
So yes, fun week to combine quests and experiment.
[9:18 PM]
WoW:
[9:19 PM]
(whoops, forgot to mention Death Knight made it from level 13 to 16)
[9:19 PM]
WoW:
[9:19 PM]
No raiding yet! In fact we're carrying it over to January after the holidays, giving me more time to hit level 70.
[9:20 PM]
Went questing a bit more in the Waking Shores, getting from level 61 to 63.
[9:21 PM]
Helped some ecologists, getting some turtles to the water and rescuing a duck stuck in a bubble. Also, murlocs to fight, yay!
[9:22 PM]
Fought a few more djaradin and primalists, took a ride up to the Ruby Lifeshrine (main hub of the zone) and got many sidequests piled on me there.
[9:23 PM]
Which in itself got me even more side quests down in the Pools of Life, where I got myself a new toy, the Lucky Duck, a stuffed duck to put on your head, similar to Pepe.
[9:24 PM]
And even a breadcrumb to the Vaults of Life area, with more sidequests around a digsite and elemental orbs to gather.
But most importantly, the starter quests for dragonriding!
[9:25 PM]
Learned how to glide and dive and get back up again, follow races through series of rings, collect glyphs (which I look forward to as a future project) to upgrade the riding, and collect customizations for my first dragonriding mount, the Renewed Proto-Drake.
[9:26 PM]
In fact, one of the elite mobs at the digsite even got me a customization for a drake I don't have yet, but I could still unlock it
[9:29 PM]
And next week I intend to clean up the rest of the madness of side quests from the Lifeshrine, before helping out Wrathion in the rest of the Waking Shores, and possibly even completing my first dungeon!
[9:31 PM]
And that's my report for the week
[9:32 PM]
Namarie!

Sandalf13 — Today at 9:41 PM
Namarie, Ar!

Varda — Today at 10:05 PM
