[4:22 PM]
We had a nice crew come in on Landroval this week. : )
[4:22 PM]
Starcraft 2: gaming together by Fangorn, Eowyn, Real Floppa, and Faramir. : )
[4:23 PM]
Any other reports, gaming comments, requests for invites, etc?
[4:23 PM]
Still don't have any real set-ups on getting together times, as I rarely see many on during my prime times.
[4:24 PM]
Monday used to be "crafting day" for Miriel-V, not a bad idea!
[4:24 PM]
Often when some of us were crafting and needed another item of some sort, the others would pitch in with a part. So it's more of a group thing than it sounds.
[4:24 PM]
Been a while since we've done that, but it's fun too.
[4:25 PM]
Is there a good day for some actual gaming? (Monday is still good)
[4:26 PM]
Dis and Nar tend to be on during my daytime, gone by after-supper when my main gaming is done.
[4:26 PM]
But we could work out a time.
[4:26 PM]
Ok, we can think about it. Meanwhile,

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:27 PM
well  if i am not on a late shift time   between 7 and  10 pm  my time woou
[4:27 PM]
ld work that is  between  2  and 5 pm  varda time

Varda — Today at 4:28 PM
LotRO is on Eastern time, if that helps. Then we all use the same time. Type /servertime to see Eastern when on LotRO.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:28 PM
which day i can t tell much in advance  i fear :(]

Varda — Today at 4:28 PM
The nature of work these days.
[4:29 PM]
I think you mean Valar time, which is Eastern. My own time is Central.
[4:29 PM]
So maybe a bit earlier than meeting time works?
[4:30 PM]
(This is the time of day I should be cooking. We tend to eat late on meeting night.)

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:30 PM
valar time then which is for  some later and past future and  present past for others

Varda — Today at 4:30 PM
Aye. We had to pick a Valar time so folks could work out when what was.  : )
[4:30 PM]
5 pm Eastern is meeting time.

Arien  Valar — Today at 4:31 PM
okay

Varda — Today at 4:31 PM
So we can subtract or add from there. I come here at my 4pm for instance.
[4:32 PM]
WoW tends to be what grabs your game time anyway. : )
[4:32 PM]
On to
[4:32 PM]

top

Tolkien!

[4:32 PM]
Eonwe suggested a possible topic.
Imladris/Rivendell and Lothlorien and Mirkwood are all shown as quite different. (edited)
[4:33 PM]
What differences did JRRT make between them?
How about for starters the types of elves living in each one?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:33 PM
Building vs tree vs cave?

Varda — Today at 4:33 PM
That's true!
[4:34 PM]
Mirkwood has no Ring-protection, while the other two do.
[4:34 PM]
Mirkwood has the caves to run to, as well as tree flets for normal living.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:35 PM
I think that of all three of those locations, Tolkien actually tells us what Imladris looks like the least....we know it is a quiet, soothing,, perfect place for everything, but as opposed to the other two, data about its appearance is lacking.

Varda — Today at 4:35 PM
Thranduil uses some magic of his own, such as spells on the gates.
[4:35 PM]
Ok, what do we know about Imladris?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:35 PM
The Hobbit has a bit of extra info on Rivendell, but not much.

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:36 PM
We know it's in a valley

Varda — Today at 4:36 PM
We know Imladris is protected by Elrond's ring. We know the river acts as an active border wall at need.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:37 PM
What kinds of trees populate Imladris? What is the local fauna like? Other than the Bruinen, how much water is flowing through the area? We know something about all of these things for Mirkwood and Lothlorien.

Varda — Today at 4:37 PM
The Last Homely House is reached through a ravine.
[4:38 PM]
And yet there is traffic through Rivendell, for friends of the place.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:39 PM
Barely an inconvenience!

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:40 PM
Alas, my copy of the Hobbit is not nearby.
[4:41 PM]
Nor my copy of  Fellowship.
[4:43 PM]
My atlas is nearby, seems blackberries and strawberries were near the goblin tunnels, but that is probably on the Rhovanion side of the Hithaeglir, not the Imladris/Eriador side. (edited)

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:43 PM
I remember LotR mostly mentioning the inside of the buildings. Various rooms.

Varda — Today at 4:43 PM
I'm pulling out of memory mostly. But can dig up the books easily, in a shelf by me.
[4:44 PM]
Aye. Frodo was recovering and didn't do a lot of area exploration. Then the Council came up. And we didn't hear a lot about the wait time before leaving.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:45 PM
Also, as a point of geologic interest, once again Tolkien fails to give us, in his words, any "geological indications."

Varda — Today at 4:46 PM
Ok, so what are the differences that we do remember between the three Elven areas? Doesn't have to be geology.
[4:47 PM]
I would like to hear your comments rather than reading my own typing. ; )

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:48 PM
The "feel" of them, at least in Sam's description of Rivendell vs Lothlorien.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:48 PM
Mirkwood seemed more... stealthy, as I recall. Less in control over their "kingdom", more trying to keep the place hidden.
[4:48 PM]
Though they did have outdoor feasts in Mirkwood during The Hobbit.

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:48 PM
Mirkwood did seem to be wilder, aye.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:49 PM
Lothlorien: fascinating trees, a la Mallorn Trees, lots of flowers (elanor), lots of streams, a sense of living in a never-ending moment of Elven ascendancy during the first age.
[4:49 PM]
Mirkwood: murky, to be sure. Gloomy, trees enshrouded in spider webs, damps, uninviting, totally not a place to vacation.
[4:50 PM]
Unless you are a visiting spider...
I wonder what they were eating?

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:51 PM
Orcs, Elves, Men, whatever they could catch.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:51 PM
Boars, stuff like that?

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:51 PM
Probably mostly orcs and men who strayed too far, larger animals likely as well. (edited)

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:51 PM
I would like to think that any Elves and Men(all types) who lived in the area, would know how to avoid getting eaten by a spider...Dwarves, maybe not.

Varda — Today at 4:51 PM
Mirkwood had outdoor meals rather like picnics, that had the additional function of lessening the mirk from Dol Guldur in such areas.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:52 PM
Sounds risky when there's spiders around.

Varda — Today at 4:52 PM
Stay on the path, we said. : )

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 4:52 PM
Knowing there's danger doesn't guarantee safety :}

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:53 PM
Wait until those tasty elves  have had their fill, then... guess who's for dinner?

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:53 PM
I would rather party on the Ettenmoors....sounds more inviting. Even the Midgewater Marshes sound better than Mirkwood.

Varda — Today at 4:53 PM
We know in Mirkwood that the elves would hunt the white deer, something special. Many of the local animals were dark, even black-furred.
[4:54 PM]
The "picnics" had armed elves that cut the lights immediately and that the dwarves could not find right after. Had to have been practiced to handle other attacks.

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:54 PM
I often wonder if Tolkien had the primeval Black Forest in mind, when he was writing about Mirkwood...or maybe the game-rich forests of eastern Poland.

Varda — Today at 4:54 PM
Midgwater Marshes and biting neeker-breekers? Had to smell too.  hmm

Sandalf13 — Today at 4:55 PM
But no giant spiders!
[4:55 PM]
I did not mean that I would choose the Midgewater Marshes over other places, but I sure would go there if my only choice was there or Mirkwood!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:56 PM
Good place for elevenses.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 4:58 PM
Heh, knew the movie before clicking the link. I'm catching up!

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 5:00 PM
Mirkwood would certainly be a pocket of the primeval forest, but I suspect Fangorn was meant more to invoke that feeling.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:01 PM
Yes. We had ents in Fangorn, something similar in the Old Forest... no mention of walking trees in Mirkwood. They were never attached, I suppose. Too much river.

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:02 PM
I know what the midges had  for  elevenses and the neekerbreekers:O
[5:02 PM]
Hobbit1
[5:02 PM]
!

Varda — Today at 5:02 PM
: )

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:02 PM
You'd prefer the spiders?

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:03 PM
oh well at least they kinda  sing and you can sing to them other then the trees  in the old  forest
[5:05 PM]
i wonder whether all the corruption in  the trees and all that being alive cmae only from  Old Man willow?
[5:05 PM]
he clearly was  an ent that had gone bad a  dark Huorn i  think he was called
[5:06 PM]
but also his evil must have  been  caused by something

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 5:06 PM
I don't think we got a specific mention of whether he was a treeish ent or an entish tree.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:06 PM
Maybe he was "touched" by a "bad Elf!"

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 5:07 PM
Might've got too possessive of "his" forest.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:07 PM
It seems that as sentient beings, it can be expected that some Ents might turn to Evil...

Varda — Today at 5:08 PM
Depends what we think is evil. Their dislike of those with fire and axes may be well-warranted.
[5:08 PM]
The hobbits had a small war with the Old Forest, and it's remembered.

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 5:08 PM
"Evil is not one thing amongst Elves and another amongst Men." ---Morgoth's Ring :} (edited)

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:09 PM
I don t know if you would come to love tose if they  were used  to destroy your homes and attack your children  to be honest

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 5:09 PM
But I wouldn't be quick to dismiss as Evil Old Man WIllow's orignal intentions, whatever he became in the end.

Varda — Today at 5:09 PM
Aye

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:09 PM
Or worse, Arien, use your children to build their homes!

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 5:10 PM
"Nothing is evil in its beginning. Not even Sauron was so." --- Frodo Baggins :} (edited)

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:10 PM
Tom B. said that Old Man Willow's roots went very deep....suggesting he was there a long time.

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:10 PM
aye indeed

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:11 PM
Didn't Tom B also say that Old Man Willow's heart was as black as a black Huorn's?

Arien  Valar — Today at 5:12 PM
but "the  old that is  strong  does not wither"  or  so  we are told maybe he wasn t strong to begin with and went into a dark bargain for gaining  this strength?

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 5:12 PM
I don't recall Huorns being mentioned until we got to Fangorn. Doesn't mean it didn't happen, but I'd have to grab my book.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:13 PM
The Old Forest was next to the Barrow Downs, I suspect the L- I mean Witch King might have had something to do with Old Man Willow's corruption. It was already old by then, but more susceptible in its old age?

Varda — Today at 5:14 PM
We kind of got off the topic of differences between the elven kingdoms. : )

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:14 PM
I think you are on to something, Ar.

Varda — Today at 5:15 PM
We have reached the hour.
the gavel sprouts to look suspiciously like Groot
it runs to the hammerpad and hops
the hammerpad acts as a trampoline

There we go, that one should work for everyone. (edited)

Varda — Today at 5:18 PM
Rivendell is run by a Lord/Master with a mixed group of Noldor, some Sindar, maybe some silvans?
[5:19 PM]
Silvans are the main type in both Mirkwood and Lorien, but is it mainly Noldor in Rivendell?
[5:19 PM]
Lorien is mostly in huge golden-leaved trees, using flets.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:20 PM
Elrond also has a human lineage via Earendil, son of Tuor...

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 5:20 PM
Noldor/Sindar in RIvendell, There would've been some Noldor in Lothlorien due to fleeing from Eregion through Moria in the Second Age.
[5:20 PM]
In UT it was one of Nimrodel's complaints, that the Noldor were living in Lothlorien.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:21 PM
Taking Silvan jobs?

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 5:22 PM
Something like that, heh. Funnily enough my copy of UT is within reach.

Varda — Today at 5:23 PM
A big mansion-type place in Rivendell. Presumably other smaller houses around? But then why is it the "Last" homely house? (Americans would say "homey" house)

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:23 PM
It is the old usurpers taking over the locals and dominating them....

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 5:24 PM
Last homely house before the Misty Mountains. There were a few across, such as Lorien or Beorn's place, but those were primitive by Noldor standards!

Varda — Today at 5:24 PM
That was the fear. But actually the silvans requested that the Sindar come act as teachers and leaders.
[5:25 PM]
Last gas station for 200 miles! heh

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:25 PM
Sounds like the panhandle of Nebraska, that wants to be a panhandle of Wyoming....
[5:25 PM]
Once a panhandle, always a panhandle.

Eonwλ Valar — Today at 5:26 PM
Alas, my time to go has come.

Sandalf13 — Today at 5:26 PM
Not literally, I hope.

Personal gaming report!

    Monster Clearer
    A simple pseudo-rpg.

[6:30 PM]
A turn-based rpg where you click a location on the map, use attacks and spells on the mobs present on the grid in a tactical manner, and if you're strong enough you move to the next
[6:31 PM]
Levels to get with stats to allocate, skills/talents to unlock every few levels, gear to loot from monsters you kill even if you can't clear the location yet, and permanent upgrades after completing a location, with spell unlocks, upgrades and other gamechanging benefits.
[6:32 PM]
It might seem tough, but if you get high enough gear and high enough level/stats, eventually even the worst tactician will just overwhelm the place
[6:35 PM]
I ended up with all astral gear, the highest tier of equipment; 14 out of 15 skills; and level 65 with tens of thousands of stats before I'd not only finished the main game but also the Twisting Void optional levels.
[6:36 PM]
But surely it can be done a lot faster
While gear seems to cap out around then, levels and stats seem to go on indefinitely, and each time you beat the final Void boss (if you like) you'll get so many new point to spend on the stats.
[6:38 PM]

Blizzard gaming:
[6:40 PM]
Hearthstone: Expansion is here. Since the first few levels come cheap, I'm at 30 on the reward track, and have already unlocked from it a mercenary (Chromie), several legendaries (Lor'themar and Elder Nadox), the death knight card back, and a bunch of uncraftable cards as well as random packs.
[6:41 PM]
I've also bought the Path of Arthas set for a bunch of gold, as well as a diamond Lady Deathwhisper for a bunch more gold. Give me more such deals while I have gold to spare
[6:42 PM]
Deathwhisper, btw, has a Dexter's Lab reference in her flavor text, which quite amused me
[6:47 PM]
I also completed the death knight prologue, featuring some events from Arthas' story in Warcraft 3, to unlock the class and a bunch more basic death knight cards, with many featuring the rune-system for that class.
[6:48 PM]
Then I had a few games with an unholy-runed death knight deck, which seemed to go rather well.
Let the event-quests continue
[6:49 PM]
Brawl is A Lich King Recipe, where all the classes get a set deck using cards and themes from the new expansion. As I had not completed the prologue yet I couldn't use the death knight, so I tried a few other classes.
[6:50 PM]
But I had trouble facing opponent death knights, of which there were many (not a surprise there, I suppose), so I kinda... conceded whenever I faced one, tanked my brawl rating a bit and got most of my wins in mage vs mage fights.
[6:51 PM]
But as long as those wins are got eventually, 's all good!
And got the death knight from level 10 to 13 as well this week, I'm sure it'll slow down soon enough.
[6:52 PM]
WoW:
[6:54 PM]
No normal raiding yet. Brought paladin to the old school raid for the first time, where she already got several weapons and a bunch of plate appearances. Not a bad start.
[6:55 PM]
Also no weekly quests yet. I believe it's world quests next week, but I doubt I'll be 70 on time, so eh.
[6:58 PM]
No alts played otherwise, as my druid main, Calaron, finally boarded a ship to the Dragon Isles.
[6:59 PM]
Where I then proceeded to explore the alliance camp, the horde camp, the embassy and some other early places, while talking to every npc, taking note of any and all scripted events I could find, and basically lore the heck out of the place while not actually doing much questing.
[7:00 PM]
And while doing more catching up on mmochampion articles, with which I'm now almost done, there was even less questing done.
[7:03 PM]
But I did get out of the first area, set things up at the embassy, helped evacuate a dragon outpost, aided some ecologists by fighting some elementals and murlocs while also aiding a duckling, and finally met up with Wrathion to thrash a big Djaradin base. Will continue that next week. And I got to level 61 in the process!
[7:04 PM]
Next week I should get a few more levels and learn how to train my dragon
[7:05 PM]
And that's my report for the week!

Are you still on,, Ar?

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 8:23 PM
I'm here now, but will copy over a transcript soon and then go to bed.

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:26 PM
I am still here too. Good report! I always enjoy reading your weekly updates. I am in Denver this evening, and it is an hour earlier here than in Lincoln. Lincoln is on the very western edge of the CST, and Denver is on the very eastern edge of MST, so it takes a while to get used to seeing the sun rise so early and set so early, whereas in Lincoln, the sun rises late and sets late. That is what happens when you are close to the border of a time zone! It is still 2025 lincoln time, so I am tired after a long drive to get here today, even though it only took less than 6.5 hours of driving through vast, empty lands.
[8:26 PM]
I hope you and your family are all well.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 8:27 PM
So far, yes
[8:27 PM]
6 and a half... yep, that's probably 2 to 3 times the length of our entire country. Can't get used to those distances.

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:30 PM
It takes some getting used to, that is for sure....my German host-sons were ALWAYS amazed at how empty the Great Plains really are. We drive for tens of miles without seeing a house, building of any type, or any sign of human habitation, except for the barbed wire fences to keep the cows in! My Germans just could not comprehend such vast space with so few people. Nebraska is 77,000 square miles....almost 2/3 the size of Germany, with a population of 1.7 million people, almost all of them in Omaha and Lincoln.
[8:31 PM]
Sorry Ar...I do not mean to keep you up so late!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 8:32 PM
that's okay, just taking care of some final stuff before I log off

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:32 PM
OK then...I am thinking of you, and I am glad we will have another Valar Guild meeting before the holidays....
[8:33 PM]
Colorado is a bigger state, around 100,000 square miles, but it also has a MUCH larger population...Denver Metro alone is over 2.5 million folks.

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 8:33 PM
Well, I'll be here during the holidays as well
[8:33 PM]
ah, but how's the density outside that?

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:34 PM
You hit the nail on the head...athough there are some other large cities in CO, like Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins, and Pueblo, to name a few....but Denver is certainly the biggie..
[8:35 PM]
the population densit of Nebraska comes out to be 1.3 persons per square mile. Not even shouting distrance. Colorado

Varda — Today at 8:35 PM
(thanks, Phar)

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:35 PM
Colorado's pop density is somewhat higher!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 8:36 PM
So if you spread out everyone in Nebraska evenly...
[8:36 PM]
Everyone would think they were alone.

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:36 PM
That is right.
[8:36 PM]
You might not even see the people sharing your square mile with you.

Varda — Today at 8:36 PM
And yet people tend to jam together into cities and never realize that.

Varda — Today at 8:36 PM
And yet people tend to jam together into cities and never realize that.

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:37 PM
Indeed.
[8:39 PM]
Hey Varda! I got some geology done tonight! So I am still making progress on finalizing Chapter 3!

Ar-Pharazon-V — Today at 8:41 PM
Right. Namarie

Sandalf13 — Today at 8:41 PM
Namarie Ar and Varda! Time to hit the rack.

Varda — Today at 9:03 PM
Great, Sandalf, on the geology! And see you around.
