N. B. Rp Discussion How about Frali starting to look explicitly for forge remains in any ruins we might pass? And starting to try slip a vaguely sword shape branch into Auros saddlebags ?  no thats a joke but things like he might try to offer to look after Auros saddlestuff and polish his equipment etc>?

Quick comments:
[6:16 AM]
How about Frali starting to look explicitly for forge remains in any ruins we might pass? => Sure? Can't think of a reason to say no. I figure it would make sense based on what we know.
[6:18 AM]
he might try to offer to look after Auros saddlestuff and polish his equipment etc>? => Hmm, I'll need to think on it.

On the RP: I do have my next post mostly written.

VardaToday at 4:29 PM
Should be quite a post. : )

Eonwë ValarToday at 4:29 PM
I'm making some minor tweaks, ended up changing where the best cut-off for it is.
[4:31 PM]
In regards to our previous discussion re: Auros not giving enough info, Calion getting mad at him for it, I don't know if this post really gives/will give anywhere to go with that. Ultimately you'll decide that for yourself, but that's what I'm thinking in writing it.

[4:35 PM]
We'll watch for it, Fionwe. : )

Eonwë ValarToday at 4:38 PM
Any other comments on the RP? Any other preferred topics of discussion?
[4:41 PM]
We do have a suggestion for a topic, and it's a good one to discuss given what the RP is dealing with.
[4:42 PM]
Go ahead, Varda :}

VardaToday at 4:42 PM
When looking at ruins, what might be a tip-off of which race built it?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:43 PM
Architecture, writing...
[4:43 PM]
Whether it's above or below ground

VardaToday at 4:43 PM
You are all now looking at a pile of ruins. Whose is it? What makes you think it's theirs?

Eonwë ValarToday at 4:44 PM
Architecture certainly, writing would require a little nuance. The same alphabet is going to be used by any of the free peoples.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:44 PM
Yes, but the language might be different.

Eonwë ValarToday at 4:44 PM
Recognizing some of the language would be the clue.
[4:44 PM]
Or not recognizing it, as the case my be.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:44 PM
Ah, but that only tells you what it isn't

Eonwë ValarToday at 4:45 PM
Which you might also be able to narrow it down if you know the history of the land.

VardaToday at 4:45 PM
History would help. Then there's the layering.

Eonwë ValarToday at 4:46 PM
Elven Architecture is probably not going to be in Angmar.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:46 PM
Thickness of the dirt or layer above it can tell you something about the age, which you can combine with history.

VardaToday at 4:46 PM
Blocky architecture with dwarvish runes, geometric shapes, too much space, and much of it underground. What is that?
[4:47 PM]
(Aside. Just saw Seoron from way back on LotRO. He's ok!)

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:47 PM
Dwarvish does seem likely
[4:47 PM]
Heh, I'm reminded of some courses from my Archaeology study.

VardaToday at 4:47 PM
I hoped it would, Phar. : )
[4:47 PM]
Great spot to apply them.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:47 PM
How rodent teeth mutated so fast that you could narrow down the time within thousands of years just from the mouse teeth.
[4:48 PM]
Or the vast, vast array of different styles of pottery.
[4:48 PM]
Any pots in our ruins?

Arien  ValarToday at 4:48 PM
Dwarvish ruins in Angmar?

VardaToday at 4:48 PM
Good thought. It could be other deco or gear, or even whether the bridges have rails or type of rails.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:48 PM
Could be a theme park for Dwarves tourists.

VardaToday at 4:49 PM
Could there even be dwarvish ruins in Angmar?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:49 PM
*Dwarvish

VardaToday at 4:49 PM
Think of what Gundabad was.

Arien  ValarToday at 4:49 PM
aye right especially for those travelling with a band of elves ~
[4:49 PM]
aiya by the way

AnarionToday at 4:49 PM
I don't think Rohirrim or Gondorian architecture would be that different. With dwarvish you have to be a bit careful because some Gondorian architecture was originally dwarven-make wasn't it?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:49 PM
Aiya

AnarionToday at 4:49 PM
Aiya

VardaToday at 4:50 PM
Aiya!

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:50 PM
Well, a lot of Gondorian and Arnorian architecture would be Numenorean in origin.

VardaToday at 4:50 PM
Gundabad, where Durin woke. Where many conferences of Dwarves were held.

Arien  ValarToday at 4:50 PM
true

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:51 PM
Mountain homes are a pain for archaeological research, I can tell you that. Vertical excavation really messes up the stratography.

VardaToday at 4:51 PM
heh

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:51 PM
If you mapped all of the inside of Erebor in a 3-dimensional map there's no way to tell directionally how old everything is.
[4:52 PM]
Unless you like... trace the excavation process.

AnarionToday at 4:52 PM
Ah, I'm mistaken about Gondorian architecture. Minas Tirith specifically was repaired by dwarves, but only after the siege

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:53 PM
Yeah, repairing stuff might give you a few clues, but nothing too big. Though I wonder if they'd get away with putting a dwarven statue here or there to replace a broken one.

VardaToday at 4:53 PM
If it's tall, it might be mistaken for human. : )

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:54 PM
True

Arien  ValarToday at 4:55 PM
i wonder weapons might need sharpening even the normal day to day weapons we have during travelling
[4:55 PM]
and frali might look for forges and whetstones or similar things

Eonwë ValarToday at 4:56 PM
The quality of the architecture might be an indication. Numenorean architecture and knowledge was capable of feats like Isengard and the Argonath.
[4:57 PM]
We're given the indication the abilities of Gondor are of a lesser degree.

VardaToday at 4:59 PM
Rohirrim might not have made a lot of stone structures? And maybe a horse motif? Definitely some form of stables all around. Maybe horses inside their structures and items there to handle them?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:59 PM
I don't know. If I had to ride and work and fight with horses outside all day I'd not be fond of seeing their faces once more when I got home.

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:01 PM
I don't know, that's their claim to fame, so to speak. Their prowess with horses is their renown.

VardaToday at 5:02 PM
I'm tninking of the Bedouins that brought their horses into their tents with them.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:02 PM
Btw, Eonwe, MMOchamp just previewed an addon for the command table that simulates and predicts outcomes for adventures and allows you to optimize. Interested?

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:03 PM
I think I've heard of it. I'm not big on addons, if only because I don't want to have to download them every time Blizzard updates the game.

VardaToday at 5:04 PM
(Helped prevent theft too, but the Rohirrim might not have had that problem.)

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:05 PM
If memory serves, and I'm hoping it does, the Bedouins were nomadic. The Rohirrim did have a bit of that in their past if memory serves, but had been settled in Calenardhon several hundred years.

Arien  ValarToday at 5:07 PM
Aye to both

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:07 PM
I'm now wondering about, say, people in Rohan  who didn't like horses.
[5:08 PM]
"Oh gods, here comes another one!"

VardaToday at 5:10 PM
In LotRO, the Rohirric architecture has horse motifs all over. Not canon necessarily, but looks cool.

Arien  ValarToday at 5:10 PM
*if you don't like horses ..do not visit Rohan!"

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:10 PM
"But I live here!"

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:11 PM
Numenorean architecture probably shared some elements in common with Noldorin architecture, as they would've been the ones building all the tall towers and stuff in the First Age, until the Numenoreans took that knowledge and worked in their own direction.

Arien  ValarToday at 5:12 PM
"learn at least to work with them son .. you don't have to like them but don't let it feel them .. horses always will take revenge if they sense you do not like them*

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:12 PM
"I don't wanna work with horses!" runs away and starts a sheep-farm

VardaToday at 5:14 PM
Numenorean architecture could have had Elven influences along with a Mannish appearance.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:14 PM
snorts at the idea of Mannish appearance

Arien  ValarToday at 5:14 PM
Mannish appearance? that means probably less elegant

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:14 PM
Indeed.

[5:17 PM]
something like this?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:17 PM
That looks.. very Game of Thrones.

Arien  ValarToday at 5:17 PM
a wonderful place in the Bretagne in fact

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:18 PM
Yep, I've heard of it

Arien  ValarToday at 5:18 PM
i imagine Minas tirith a bit like that but much bgger of course
[5:18 PM]
and more elgant with more decoration
[5:18 PM]
the closer you get to the citadel

VardaToday at 5:21 PM
What would Elvish architecture have? Especially those bits that might have been added into Numenorean?

Arien  ValarToday at 5:22 PM
Towers ? gardens and alcoves? statues?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:22 PM
Some unique decoration, I suppose.
[5:22 PM]
Leaves of Telperion or something.

Arien  ValarToday at 5:23 PM
yes .. i can imagine pillars with leaf shapes
[5:23 PM]
or even in window frames
[5:25 PM]
or wells with a swan on top over the hook shaped like a ship . something like that
[5:26 PM]
nothing bombastic but hinting to memories from ages past#

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:27 PM
Might be more sleek.

VardaToday at 5:27 PM
Beauty and knowledge of things that Men had not yet learned. Very tasteful.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:27 PM
Thinner and taller. Like elves compared to men.

Arien  ValarToday at 5:29 PM
arcs sleek and formed like trees

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:30 PM
Better architecture and better materials would allow for thinner and taller.
[5:30 PM]
skyscraper vs pyramid.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:30 PM
Right

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:32 PM
Makes one wonder if Noldor would reinforce their buildings like we do today.
[5:33 PM]
Tolkien didn't really go into it, but I imagine if there were rebar sticking out of stones in Eregion, someone would notice.

VardaToday at 5:33 PM
Don't suppose they had a problem with cold iron. : )
[5:33 PM]
They used meteoric iron (Eol, two swords).

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:34 PM
They must have had glass, right?

VardaToday at 5:34 PM
Glass, yes.

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:34 PM
Certainly.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:34 PM
But actually used for windows and such?

VardaToday at 5:34 PM
Glass, not of the quality we're used to, has been used a long time.

Arien  ValarToday at 5:34 PM
I d imagine they d make painted glass windows or even mosaic windows

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:34 PM
They had mirrors, so they had glass.

VardaToday at 5:34 PM
It was accidentally made in campfires on sand, I believe. So it could have started a crazy long time ago.
[5:35 PM]
(I need to see to supper. See you later, with good fortune!)

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:35 PM
And good fortune to you!

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:35 PM
Have fun Varda :}

VardaToday at 5:35 PM
Thanks!
[5:35 PM]
munch munch Hobbity joy!

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:35 PM
And remember, life is to be savoured! Pandaren voice

Arien  ValarToday at 5:35 PM
jewels are a form of glass if you want ... well diamonds anyway#

VardaToday at 5:35 PM
heh

Arien  ValarToday at 5:36 PM
eenjoy cooking and eating!

VardaToday at 5:36 PM
and enjoy diamonds!

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:36 PM
diamonds are carbon, though

Arien  ValarToday at 5:36 PM
so gems in the widest sense

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:36 PM
I don't think they're going to carve diamonds into sheets for windows.

Arien  ValarToday at 5:36 PM
nope

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:37 PM
There's also obsidian glass, but made from different materials... and not transparant

Arien  ValarToday at 5:38 PM
just saying that from working with gems they might get some skill with working glass or compared to gems glass might be  as say when kids have a fun kick in the court yard and a final in the champion s league

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:39 PM
Start with glass, less expensive if you mess up

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:39 PM
hehe
[5:40 PM]
I'm sure the Eldar had all sorts of fancy glass knick-knacks and such as well as windows and drinking items.
[5:40 PM]
The Avari, I wonder. Not that they couldn't, but I wonder if it would've been practical.
[5:41 PM]
Mirkwood perhaps, Lothlorien, I'm less certain about.

Arien  ValarToday at 5:41 PM
cups and bowls made of wood .. quite elegant though i imagine
[5:41 PM]
with carved decorations

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:41 PM
Aye, doesn't have to be glass to be ornate.
[5:42 PM]
And yet, there was Galadriel's phial, which shows they worked with something there in some degree.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:43 PM
Can't have been too vulnerable as glass, with all the adventuring it went through.
[5:43 PM]
Imagine having this powerful phial and just smashing it randomly in your pocket as you climb down a rock in the Emyn Muil.

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:43 PM
At least not glass we're used to.

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:46 PM
I don't have my books accessible right now.
[5:46 PM]
Do we have a description from the book?

Arien  ValarToday at 5:47 PM
i ll check

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:47 PM
What about men? Gondor? Any mention of glass?

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:48 PM
I don't recall off the top of my head, but if Hobbits can do it, I'm confident Gondor has that one down ;}

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:48 PM
Hobbits had glass?
[5:49 PM]
Windows, I guess.

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:49 PM
Yes, they had mirrors, as mentioned above.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:49 PM
Ah! Yes. Mirrors.

Arien  ValarToday at 5:50 PM
*Frodo looked and saw, still at some distance , a hill of many mighty trees, or city of gren towers: which it was he could not tell. Out of it , it seemed to him that the power and light came that held all the land in sway"
[5:50 PM]
just that
[5:52 PM]
and at the beginning of the Mirror of Galadriel

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:52 PM
Thanks.
[5:54 PM]
Elrond also had mirrors in Rivendell.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:57 PM
In any case, the presence of glass wouldn't then mean much for differentiating between architectures. The type and use, though, may differ.

Eonwë ValarToday at 5:59 PM
If we're looking at ruins, I would tend to theink they're old enough that anything that was glass is long since broken.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:59 PM
Shards can still speak.
[6:00 PM]
So speaketh your resident failed archaeology student.

Arien  ValarToday at 6:00 PM
"Suddenly they came out into the open againand found themselves under a pale evening sky pricked by a few early stars. There was a wide treeless space before them , running in a great circle and bending away on either hand. Beyond it was a deep fosse lost in soft shadow, but the grass upon its brink was green, as if it glowed still in memory of the sun that had gone. Upon the further side there rose to a great a green wall encircling a green hill thronged with mallorn trees taller than any they had seen in all the land. Their height could not be guessed, but they stood up in the twilight like living towers. IN their many tiered branches and amid theyr ever moving leaves countless lights were gleaming green and gold and silver . Haldir turned towards the company: "Welcome to Caras Galadhon!"

Here's a fun fact* (*quality of "fact" based upon accuracy of wikipedia at any given microsecond):

Under the wikipedia article for "lantern" it says : "Before the development of glass sheets, animal horn scraped thin and flattened was used as the translucent window."(edited)

For the windows on lanterns at least.

Personal gaming report!
[7:31 PM]
For flashgaming, looks like we had one last week also containing badges for flashgames, which made a few people rather unhappy... but since I already had all 7 it's fine for me. That said, one of the three for this week is html5, by pure coincidence

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 7:55 PM
https://www.kongregate.com/games/flori9/the-final-earth-2 is that game! A city management game where you drop down on a sort of earthy platform in space where you have to build a city.

Blizzard gaming:
[8:31 PM]
Heroes of the Storm:
2 levels gained, to 445! Tyrande to level 3 and Auriel to 9. Having fun with the healers!

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 8:40 PM
Hearthstone:
Patch comes with some new year's legendary quests for packs, working on those.
[8:41 PM]
Reward track reached 50! Chose the arcanist mage portrait for Jaina. We'll see in upcoming seasons if the other 9 will be available, or we get a new set.
[8:41 PM]
After this point the reward track is simply low xp per level and 50g reward, and I've gotten up to 57 so far.
[8:43 PM]
Also, demon hunter made it to level 33!
[8:44 PM]
Brawl this week is Cloneball, where you get a bunch of legendaries, cloned 4 times. Unfortunately, the first few times I got some really bad legendaries, while the opponent got stuff like Ragnaros
[8:44 PM]
But I managed in the end!
[8:45 PM]
WoW:
[8:47 PM]
Raidwise, making progress. Two more bosses down, and I made it over 200 ilevel.
[8:48 PM]
Weekly quest is battlegrounds, through which I got enough honor to upgrade my pvp trinkets to the maximum level.
[8:49 PM]
World questing... practically finished, with no more new WQs in a couple of days, which means I can now focus on callings only and the occasional achievement.
[8:49 PM]
One of which I got with some trouble, the second flight school achievement in bastion
[8:52 PM]
I did start doing the Maw dailies, and weekly quests from Ve'nari, to build up rep with her and get upgrades for the Maw and Torghast. Doing well so far, got to Apprehensive and bought the first 3 upgrades.
[8:53 PM]
And finally Covenant story stuff! Am now at renown 24, which means the only renown I'm behind comes from the chapters I've yet to do, so no more catch-up from other sources.
[8:55 PM]
Completed another chapter of the campaign, rescuing a spirit from a spriggan's curse and securing aid in our rescue of Tyrande.
[8:55 PM]
Also saved Jaina from Torghast and got a lead on Thrall
[8:57 PM]
Oh, speaking of Torghast, got a new legendary power from there, Apex Predator's Craving, as well as an achievement to clear a layer with 1000 phantasma unused. Figured I was reasonably comfortable with Torghast now, and figured I'd better get it now before heading into the really tough layers.
[8:58 PM]
And that's my report for the week! Next week more covenanting, perhaps saving Thrall as well!
