Aiya Sandalf : )
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 3:58 PM
Hallo All ! I am here, just waiting for the meeting to start...We
had our first real snow in Lincoln on Friday, and yesterday was so
pretty with the snow-covered ground. It reminded me of the pine
tress and the snow-covered hillls of Dor Lormin, before the Fifth
Battle...but of course, one must love the snow to appreciate such
landscapes!
Varda Yesterday at 3:58 PM
Ohh, snow!
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 3:59 PM
I often wonder where Tolkien learned to - apparently - like show.
It certainly did NOT
Varda Yesterday at 3:59 PM
People can enjoy seeing snow without wanting to be chilled. ;
) But aye, it sounds wonderful.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:00 PM
snow in the land of his early your (South AFrica), and the
Midlands of England rarely seen snow...yet it plays such a role in
his writing.
[4:00 PM]
I meant "early youth."
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 4:00 PM
Greetings and salutations.
Irmo Yesterday at 4:00 PM
Greetings all !
Arien Valar Yesterday at 4:01 PM
Aiya all
Irmo Yesterday at 4:02 PM
Heya heya heya Arien, Eonwλ, Sandalf and Varda
Varda Yesterday at 4:02 PM
Aiya Eonwe, Irmo, and Arien : )
[4:02 PM]
Just for fun, did a quick search on UK snow and found this about
storm Arwen:
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/gallery/2021/nov/29/snow-blankets-north-of-uk-in-the-wake-of-storm-arwen-in-pictures
the Guardian
Snow blankets north of UK in the wake of Storm
Arwen in pictures
Storm Arwen brought wind gusts of almost 100mph
late on Friday, before weakening and drifting towards continental
Europe.
Heavy snow and the severe gale wreaked havoc on
road and rail transport across the UK and forced the cancellation
of Sundays Premier League football match between Burnley and
Tottenham Hotspur in north-west England
[4:03 PM]
It's an interesting question. Maybe the fact that it wasn't common
made it more interesting? He also traveled when he was a
soldier.
Irmo Yesterday at 4:04 PM
WW 1 had some cold winters....
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:04 PM
Ah yes...snow is more common in the Ardennes than in the nearby
U.K.
Varda Yesterday at 4:04 PM
The Arwen storm could not be passed up. ; )
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 4:05 PM
Insert joke about getting the cold shoulder from Arwen.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:05 PM
My father served through the blizzards that struck the Ardennes
during the Battle of the Bulge in Dec, 1944...he told me many
times how cold it was, and cloudy...
Varda Yesterday at 4:06 PM
So JRRT may have seen a fair bit of snow. In wartime, it may have
helped hide some of the ugliness, a plus.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:06 PM
Especially during WWI.
Varda Yesterday at 4:06 PM
Might have been a reason to like it?
[4:07 PM]
Yet it didn't seem to be considered a good thing at the Pass of
Caradhras.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:07 PM
As good a reason as any, but I also believe that snow sets a
certain mood, whether in literature or real life.
Varda Yesterday at 4:08 PM
What was one time snow seemed a good thing in the stories?
I keep thinking of bad ones like crossing the Helcaraxe. Need a
reminder.
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 4:09 PM
The Long Winter certainly wasn't a good one.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:09 PM
Tolkien mention several times how much the residents - especially
the Hobbit children - loved snow. I believe that since he modelled
the Shire on England (or vice versa), snow was a relatively rare
event.
Varda Yesterday at 4:09 PM
Ahh, that's a good one.
[4:10 PM]
What a postcard that would make: hobbit children playing in the
snow in the Shire, hobbit hole homes in the background.
We need some of our artistic bunch to do that one!
Christmas card too.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:10 PM
Perhaps some artistic member of the Valar Guild could render such
an image?
Varda Yesterday at 4:11 PM
That would be great. : )
Arien Valar Yesterday at 4:12 PM
you coulld turn a screen shot from winterhome into a postcard
from that snowman game
Varda Yesterday at 4:12 PM
Aye, that can work. Hoping for straight out painting, but that's
an excellent idea.
Arien Valar Yesterday at 4:12 PM
or the snow ball fight
Varda Yesterday at 4:13 PM
We have a snowball arena at the kin house on Landroval server too.
: )
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:13 PM
There is a lot of fan fiction out there about Estel growing up in
Imladris, some of which includes snowy days...
Varda Yesterday at 4:15 PM

Great to see all of you here!
Here's hoping you all have a wonderful December with all of it's

[4:16 PM]
Happy to say Meriadoc should be visiting us for Christmas, so
maybe some of you will bump into him in LotRO then.
[4:17 PM]
Any other membership news? Irmo and Miriel almost unpacked now? :
)
Irmo Yesterday at 4:18 PM
Yes, I am happy to say
Most of the work on the house is finished, but for placing the new
kitchen (scheduled for May)
[4:19 PM]
And we have set up and decorated the Christmas tree, so all set
Arien Valar Yesterday at 4:19 PM
Nice
Varda Yesterday at 4:21 PM
Excellent!
We know it's postcard pretty around Sandalf!
[4:22 PM]
Gorgeous day here, sunshiny and clear. Green grass, flowers in
full bloom while fall leaves blow in around them.
Winter generally hits here more in January.

A bit more for Lord of the Rings Online:

Ioreth

Varda
Anor server:

Shadowfax server:

Treebeard server:
Varda
[4:31 PM]
Ioreth is on more now, since Final Fantasy continued
having problems, maybe overpopulation.
[4:32 PM]
Also, in LotRO, task boards in the housing areas were
being worked on and accidentally released in the last patch.
[4:32 PM]
So they're jammed together! But it should be fixed next patch.
[4:34 PM]
On Anor server, we have added a crafting Workbench to the kin
house, hopefully more crafting stations over time as we make the
barter points for them. Will take a while to replace all the stuff
lost during the move from Ithil.
[4:34 PM]
Any other gaming news? Remarks on games you like to play?
[4:35 PM]
Starcraft and Minecraft have been actively played
this past week by Eowyn, Faramir, Fangorn, and grandson.

Tolkien!
[4:42 PM]
The RP on the forum exists. Reminder to
self.
[4:42 PM]
Must also remember to post!
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:42 PM
What is the RP?
Varda Yesterday at 4:42 PM
For discussion,
[4:43 PM]
ahh, the RP is short for our Role-play story that we're
doing on the forum.
[4:44 PM]
It was started while we were waiting for the game, Lord of the
Rings Online, to come out, back when it was still in process as
Middle-earth Online.
Then we kept going since it's fun. : )
RP is our short way of mentioning it.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:45 PM
Is a role play story the same as online gaming? I just bought a
brand-spanking-new Lenovo 15.6 in laptop with an i7 processor. It
is very fast (for me) and replaces my 5 year old Dell laptop that
was slowly and sometimes not-so-slowly dying. Is such a laptop
suitable for a RP game?
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 4:45 PM
It's more like a group writing project.

Role-Play story: "Scouting Ahead" | Valar Guild

Varda Yesterday at 4:46 PM
Aye, it is a story we're writing on the forum as a group. Each of
us takes a character and types our post, taking turns.

Your old laptop sounds like my Dell laptop, currently typing on.
[4:47 PM]
Thanks, Arien. : )
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Must one be invited in to play?
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Aiya, catching up
Arien Valar Yesterday at 4:47 PM
The firstr is the first chapter a;nd the second the second
Varda Yesterday at 4:47 PM
Aiya Phar : )
[4:47 PM]
The story is pretty long. Might need to read up before jumping in,
and chat with us to see how to jump in. Sure, you can join the
story.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:48 PM
My old Dell laptop had a traditional spinning hard disk drive...my
new Lenove uses a SSD device. Safer, and more reliable, I have
been told.
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 4:48 PM
There also has to be a good place to come in for the character
you're trying to bring in.
Varda Yesterday at 4:48 PM
As for gaming, you might enjoy Lord of the Rings Online with us on
Landroval server, for the fun of living in Middle-earth.
[4:49 PM]
Hey, you knew I was going to say it! ; )
Wonder who that is in the cell down the tunnel...
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 4:49 PM
So this Lord of the Rings Online. Don't think I've heard about
that game. Could you tell us more, Varda? :}
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Are there instructions somewhere, or a tutorial, that would show
me how to participate? is my Lenovo capable of playing, even
though it is NOT a "gaming" laptop?
Varda Yesterday at 4:49 PM
Eonwe, lol!
Treebeard Yesterday at 4:50 PM

Varda Yesterday at 4:50 PM
Sorry if I was being confusing. Do you mean the story on the forum

Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:51 PM
BTW, I am working on a new fictional story for the Guild..."The
Healing of Frodo," about his care (and Sam's) upon their arrival

Arien Valar Yesterday at 4:51 PM

Treebeard Yesterday at 4:51 PM
Sandalf13, it sounds like your new laptop is similar to the one
Varda uses. It will probably handle the game just fine.
[4:51 PM]

Varda Yesterday at 4:52 PM
His old Dell was like mine. If the new one is better, then likely
it will handle LotRO.

Varda Yesterday at 4:55 PM
The site should have a spot saying minimum gaming machine
requirement. It is an older game, not needing the super computer
stuff.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 4:56 PM
Frankly I'm still wanting to write a followup post in the RP but I
have no idea what to write there other than just carrying haybales
around.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 4:56 PM
Thank you, Arien Valar....I have copied your link to my notepad
and will keep it on my desktop. I travel the 5.5 hours up the
Great Plains tomorrow for a business meeting in Denver on
Tuesday...Lots of time to explore the link
once i arrive in Golden tomorrow afternoon. Lovely day to
travel, from all accounts.
[4:58 PM]
Lincoln is only 1200 feet above MSL, while Denver (Lakewood) is
about 5300 feet above MSL. A very significant geologic border is
passed once one encounters the Dakota Sandstone at mile marker 437
on I80, and then leaves the glaciated plains at MM 384.6 and
climbs onto the High Plains surface. Very exciting, for Nebraska.

Sounds as if the trip itself will be fun for you, o Geologist. : )
I recommend NVIDIA, by the way.
[5:01 PM]
There's a 32 bit and 64 bit version. I have both. 64 bit on mine
has less "lag". [Note: The Lord of the Rings Online game comes in
32 bit and 64 bit versions. Modern computers are 64 bit.]
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:01 PM
Yes. I can never understand kids today who spend their time on the
cell phone or game rather than looking out the window and watching
how the land changes from place to place....that is the whole
reason I became a geologist in the first place, eons agol
[5:01 PM]
Do you mean the stock NVDA? (Nvidia)
Varda Yesterday at 5:02 PM
I mean the card on your computer made by Nvidia.
The stock is pretty good too. : )
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:02 PM
Ah...I just bought some shares of NVDA with my broker. Sounds like
a good company to invest in.
Varda Yesterday at 5:03 PM
As always, depends on where it is in the charts and news and
fundamentals. But aye.
Hoping you have an Nvidia card rather than using AMD for LotRO
gaming.
[5:04 PM]
And don't come in by Steam! : )
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:05 PM
Another "HOT" tip: A Canadian company, now relocated to the U.S.
in Denver, CO, owns the mineral rights to the carbonatite diatreme
in southeastern Nebraska that is related to the diatremes that pop
up along the Front Range of Colorado and Wyoming. Not only is the
diatreme rich in Niobium and Scandium, but it ALSO has rare earth
elements in some amazing concentrations. They are currently
searching for funding to develop the mine. It all depends on your
investing time frame. BTW. I have no idea if I have AMD on my
Lenovo.
Varda Yesterday at 5:06 PM
If they will start letting us mine rare earths in the US, sounds
very interesting!
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:06 PM
(quick post done)
Varda Yesterday at 5:06 PM
Thank you, Phar!
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:06 PM
You hit the key question on the nose. How serious is the U.S. (and
the West in general) in getting away from dependence on China for
REEs?
Varda Yesterday at 5:06 PM
Anyway, quick thing for Tolkien chat,
[5:07 PM]
or back to that.
Under this admin, it is not interested.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:07 PM
REE, eh? I like acronyms that sound fun when you pronounce them.
Varda Yesterday at 5:08 PM
Tolkien chat item, how is atmosphere
produced in the books, using weather and even actual atmosphere?
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:08 PM
Rare Earth Elements....they are actually not so rare, but they are
dispersed, as opposed to concentrated, so finding them in
economically minable prospects is VERY, VERY rare.
Varda Yesterday at 5:08 PM
The US has plenty, just have not been allowed to mine.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:09 PM
Clouds, Varda? Especially dark ones coming out of Mordor
Varda Yesterday at 5:09 PM
And back to atmosphere, how about that reek over Mordor? Hear it
was spreading out to Gondor.
[5:09 PM]
Aye, those clouds.

Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:11 PM
I do not recall reading much about Tolkien's conception of HOW Arda came to be,
other than it springing from the singing of the Ainur. Details are
lacking. At the beginning of my chapter on the Geology of Middle
Earth, I include the quote that Tolkien made about some readers
requesting more geological references in his work...unfortunately
(or fortunately?) Tolkien did not have much of a geologic
background.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:11 PM
Well, geological backgrounds tend to take millions of years to
form (if not longer).
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:12 PM
:)
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:12 PM
Middle-earth was more... built into shape by Ainur, and didn't
change all too much in the time covered.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:12 PM
Did any of you get to check out the two hysterical videos, "The
Geologists are Coming," and the one on Hammer Safety? Both by the
Amoeba People, and available on Youtube.
Varda Yesterday at 5:12 PM
The physical building by the Ainur, headed by the Valar with aid
from the Maiar, aimed to bring about the design that Eru showed
them in a vision of their singing.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:13 PM
Yes, amusing, thanks
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:13 PM
Some people think faster than that although it seems glacial speed
sometimes and not very timely.
Varda Yesterday at 5:13 PM
Yes, we did. : ) Very funny.
But Morgoth saw from the Void that they were building something
wonderful that he was not part of.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:14 PM
I am glad you enjoyed them. I love the music for the hammer safety
video....very mockumentary.
Varda Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Being wroth at such a thing, he entered Arda after the building
was well in progress and started changing things to make it more
his own.
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 5:14 PM
Much casting down and building up of mountain ranges was had.
Varda Yesterday at 5:15 PM
He would tear down a mountain range and make it a sea, for
instance. Annoyed the Valar that had it set up already.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:15 PM
Some villains create fortresses within mountains. Morgoth and
Sauron went a step beyond that and actually raised said mountains
first.
Varda Yesterday at 5:15 PM
That's an example, but much else of that nature.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:15 PM
But no gological "indications," as Tolkien referred to them. Does
Arda have a crust? A Mantle? A core? A transition Zone? What is
the specific gravity of the rocks in the Misty Mountains as
opposed to that of the crust beneath the Great Sea?
Varda Yesterday at 5:15 PM
Morgoth was into cold and ice, so he had a big part in the
Helcaraxe.
[5:16 PM]
Arda is the planet Earth, so it is the same.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:16 PM
Well, Middle-Earth started out flat, with caves underneath where
the sun could travel. Sun being what it is, though, magma might be
created as it passed.
Varda Yesterday at 5:16 PM
This is the pre-history, the early times that have faded into
myth.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:16 PM
After curving in on itself, more pressure might be applied.
Varda Yesterday at 5:16 PM
The "flat" planet was at one time considered like a great ship,
floating in the ethereal ocean of Vai.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:17 PM
Everything that you say is true, and seems to add credence to the
notion that by the time of the action in the LoTR, all sentient
beings on M.E. were more or less accepting as legend the creation
of M.E., such as the drowning of Beleriand.
Varda Yesterday at 5:17 PM
Some of the residents had been around at the time of Beleriand.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:17 PM
So they claim.'
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:18 PM
...first there was a thought, then a decision, which followed
things or matter and energy in order to form the result of ordered
thinking, making a story with a plot for goals only structured
thinkers can fathom... and bystanders to appreciate the formations
that followed the thought that caused the things which the gawkers
mused about... and everyone with a thought process began to
wonder... "Did we always think this way, or are we thinking this
way because we now are capable of discriminatory thoughts?"
Varda Yesterday at 5:18 PM
They've mostly all gone to the West by modern times, however, so
they're hard to interview.
[5:18 PM]
Thanks, Fangorn. hehehe
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:18 PM
The Elves were the first to think of it in Middle Earth
Varda Yesterday at 5:18 PM
Fangorn was around. : )
[5:19 PM]
Bombadil.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:19 PM
Well, Sandalf, the story is a mythology at its heart If
you're going to question what the mythology says, there doesn't
seem much point.
Varda Yesterday at 5:20 PM
A number of elves, including Galadriel.
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:20 PM
Fangorn was interested in Entish things and took too long thinking
when the Ent wives went their separate ways.
Varda Yesterday at 5:24 PM
But at the pub, they mentioned other trees that moved.
[5:24 PM]
I think it was to drive us nuts with info we have in the
background. It was not necessary to the War of the Ring.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:24 PM
Foreshadowing, perhaps
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:24 PM
Since Fangorn could not give an adequate description of an Ent
Wife to a hobbit, I can't say that he ever had more than a passing
interest.
Varda Yesterday at 5:24 PM
The reader is going, Tell him! Tell him! : )
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 5:25 PM
Sam was there. Merry was in Buckland, Pippin in Tookland. It's
possible they heard the same stories, and they might've talked
about it with Fangorn offscreen, but law of conservation of detail
and all :}
Varda Yesterday at 5:26 PM
Galadriel said the ents and entwives might get together in the
west. Everyone assumed she meant the Furthest West in Valinor, but
the Shire was west!
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:26 PM
"By the way, Treebeard, have you ever heard of Old Man Willow?"
"Oh, yeah, that guy. He was mean. We sent him away. Have you met
him?"
Varda Yesterday at 5:26 PM
hehe - actually Old Man Willow was simply required to let go of
the hobbits and go back to resting. [Note: misread. Treebeard send
OMW away and have you seen him was the joke.]
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 5:26 PM
I'm not sure the ents would be keen on building a boat to sail
West.... :}
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:26 PM
Surely after the crowning of Elessar, the Ents themselves wojuld
have been free to wander the lands of M.E., especially since
Elessar encouraged them to do so. I wonder if that did, later,
visit the Shire and its surroundings...As Fangorn muses to Merry
and Pippin, the Shire sounds like a place the Entwives would like.
Varda Yesterday at 5:27 PM
Log boat that paddles itself!
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:27 PM
They could float there, Eonwe
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:27 PM
Huorns moved and Old man Willow, at least, looked like a
willow. Might it be an Ent wife or a Huorn-like tree that
moved?
Varda Yesterday at 5:28 PM
Huorn-like, or a tree going "entish"/"huornish". That happened.
And vice versa.
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:28 PM
"Fangorn jumps in for a swim, but only slowly tells anyone about
the swim that had time to listen so long"
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:28 PM
I think Tom Bombadil could help answer that one...I always
suspected that old Tom was one of the Valar himself, or certainly
a Maia of high order, keeping watch on M.E. for the Valar....
Varda Yesterday at 5:28 PM
We know of other Maiar that moved about in Middle-earth. Even some
Valar at times such as Orome and Ulmo.
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:29 PM
Tom was a Maya not assigned to the tasks of wizards.
Varda Yesterday at 5:29 PM
Some Maiar were so high level that they were hard to tell from
Valar.
[5:30 PM]
Of the Maiar sent to Middle-earth or that traveled on their own
there, only the Istari/Wizards had part of their power and memory
removed for that time.
Tom would have kept his.
Melian was another Maia.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:30 PM
I still believe in the back of my heart-of-hearts that Tom
Bombadil and his wife were Manwe and Yavanna...
Varda Yesterday at 5:30 PM
Don't tell Varda. ; )
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 5:30 PM
Tom wasn't explicitly said to be a Maia or Vala.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:31 PM
Heh. Manwe and Yavanna sneaking off to Middle-earth behind Varda's
back?
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 5:31 PM
And aye, I would hope they weren't Manwλ and Yavanna.
Varda Yesterday at 5:31 PM
Tom was left as an enigma. The spiirit of the countryside more or
less. That makes him sound like a Maia of Yavanna to me.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:31 PM
Maybe Tom's wife was Varda...more likely you are correct.
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:31 PM
...because Tom didn't fiddle with the paths of men and elves
and dwarves, or at least kept his area as separate as was
necessary, but he did understand the barrows.
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 5:31 PM
Tulkas and Nessa maybe.
Varda Yesterday at 5:32 PM
Tom did not think he could handle the evil ones out there, the big
ones. He was powerful in his own region. He could not have been a
Vala.
But he could have been a Maia.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:32 PM
I always believed that the Valar were so "high" that they could
more easily relate to the feelings of lowly mortals, more so than
the High Elves themselves could do so
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 5:32 PM
Tom's so strong he doesn't have to lift a finger to stop barrow
wights and angry trees. Yep, sounds like the Champion of the Valar
to me.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:33 PM
"Tom, he is the Master..."
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:33 PM
Are there any other Valar or Maiar we know who were into song?
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 5:33 PM
All of them? :}
Varda Yesterday at 5:33 PM
Tom sang at them, using music strong enough that it was probably
involved in the Song of Creation. So he was at least an Ainur.
[5:33 PM]
All Ainur were into song, music.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:33 PM
...Good point, Eonwe
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:33 PM
BTW, there is some good fan fiction of Tom Bombadil meeting a very
young Aragorn out on his own for the first time...
Varda Yesterday at 5:35 PM
Do you think Estel would have met Tom in the actual Middle-earth
or just in fan fic?
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:37 PM
Well, Tom didn't seem to get around much.
Varda Yesterday at 5:39 PM
Estel when very young was with his father and mother, his father
being the Chieftain of the Rangers. Probably not allowed in the
Old Forest.
Later he was in Rivendell and would have been supervised as the
next Chieftain.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:39 PM
I have some problems with Tolkien's chronology of "Estel" and the
other "Wise." It is stated in The Tale of Arwen and Aragorn, that
Elrond AND THE WISE knew that Sauron was searching for the Heir of
Isildur, therefore, Elrond changed Aragorn's name to Estel.
Gandalf was indeed "one of the Wise," as was Galadriel, Celeborn,
Radagast, among others...including Curunir. Despite the fact that
Tolkien states that Aragorn did NOT meet Gandalf until long after
he had left Imladris as a 21 year old or so, I believe that Estel
met Gandalf and others of the Wise as a young child...in Imladris.
I do not think that "the Wise" would have passed up the
opportunity to meet the Heir ASAP, especially since they were all,
in a sense, protecting him....but that leads to a problem with
Curunir....
Varda Yesterday at 5:39 PM
Tom did not leave the area of the Old Forest.
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 5:40 PM
Assuming Gandalf was in RIvendell at the time. Consider that Arwen
hadn't met "Estel" either, until he was an adult, because she was
off in Lothlorien at the time.
Varda Yesterday at 5:41 PM
Elrond, as one of the Wise, knew of course. But Saruman was not in
the area of Rivendell, and set up at Orthanc.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:42 PM
Saruman did not strike me as the kind of person who liked kids.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:42 PM
In my essay on Denethor, I did mention my belief that it would
have been very difficult for Elrond to "hide" a ten year old boy
in his household during the visit of the Dwarves and Bilbo to
Imladris...virtually impossible. Also, given Elven parental skills
and sensitivity, I do not see how Elrond would have kept Estel
hidden away.
Varda Yesterday at 5:42 PM
The Istari were intended to help the ones actually in ruling
positions.
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:43 PM
I figured that Aragorn became attracted to his baby sitter, Arwen,
that had no hangups over a trivial few hundred years age
difference
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:43 PM
There are some intimations that some of "The Wise" were worried
about Curunir even before Gandalf's experiences at Isengard...
Varda Yesterday at 5:44 PM
"Time for your lessons, Estel". Wayyy over here away from the
visitor area.
Aye, Sandalf.
[5:45 PM]
A visitor area could help manage a lot of problems of security.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:45 PM
I don't know, Varda....I am torn between believing that you are
correct, and Elrond would have conveniently arranged for Estel to
be FAR AWAY during Bilbo's bisit,, but part of me still believes
that Elrond loved Estel like a son, and would have taken a normal
father's pride in "presenting" or "showing off" his son to his
guests...
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 5:46 PM
Certainly not if the idea was to keep him hidden in the first
place
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:46 PM
That is the whole basis for the story of Aunt Dora Baggins and my
follow-up story that you so graciously published on the Valar
Guild.
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:47 PM
I think that Aragorn took advantage of the 3000 years of
experience in sword play and education of his Elf teachers.
Varda Yesterday at 5:47 PM
Protective father, too.
[5:48 PM]
And fan fic lets us do lots.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:48 PM
You are ALL right, of course.
Varda Yesterday at 5:48 PM
May not have been all that far. And at a little distance, he may
have appeared to be an elf if only because they assumed it.
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:48 PM
I expect that Elrond saw to it that Aragorn received training in
herbal medicine, but I don't remember what happened to Aragorn's
mom. Did he have one?
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:49 PM
Of course! Gilraen was gifted with the foresight of the High
Numenoreans, and probably had some skill as a healer as well.
Varda Yesterday at 5:50 PM
Aragorn's mom was Gilraen and lived at Rivendell with Estel after
the death of her husband.
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:51 PM
Ah, Gilraen. Thanks. Nobody mentions dear old
mom. I'm sure she guided him when possible.
[5:51 PM]
.... tuck your shirt in, stand up straight, "Is that anyway for
the future king to behave?" and the like
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:52 PM
I also believe that given Gilraen's high ancestry, she was also
aware of the familial relationship between Elrond, his children,
and the heirs of Elendil and Elros.
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:52 PM
Yes.
Varda Yesterday at 5:52 PM
Right.
Treebeard Yesterday at 5:53 PM
Ok. Nice chatting. I must be off to fine FOOD.

The jalapeno poppers are probably ready. : )
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:54 PM
I came across a beautiful story by PSW on Stories of Arda entitled
"Beyond Imladris," that I think captures very well the emotional
links between ELrond, Elladan, Elrohir, and little
Estel....foretold to someday become Elessar....with an "El..."
name, just like his "father" and "brother."
[5:54 PM]
Namarie all! Sei Gesund!
Varda Yesterday at 5:54 PM
She was also aware of the family relationship because she lived in
Rivendell, so it would be common knowledge.
Sandalf13 Yesterday at 5:56 PM
Time to shut out the immensity of Middle Earth, and get ready for
a trip to Denver tomorrow. Thank you all for listening! I
thoroughly enjoyed all of your comments! See you next week.....

Fainan using sonar.
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 7:20 PM
Fainan is the Daredevil of Middle-Earth? ;}
[7:23 PM]
Elves are supposed to have more acute senses. I'm not sure we can
rule out the idea an Elf might be able to discern distance to some
degree by the echo. Like dropping a Hobbit in a well--- er, a
pebble in a well and listening for the sound :}
Varda Yesterday at 7:23 PM
We all do it some.
I do it at night in rl, trying not to disturb people.
[7:24 PM]
Also, Fainan is looking through the slightly clearer spots.
If it comes out as Daredevil, may have gone too far. : )
[7:25 PM]
The hobbit going AAAaaaaahhhh.... Yep, heard that.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 7:26 PM
I can't really think of times I use echoes to guide myself through
the night. Usually go by whatever light there is and touch.
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 7:26 PM
I exaggerate. Fine on an initial readthrough at least.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 7:26 PM
It's definitely something I can see an elf doing.
Or not, in fog's case.
Varda Yesterday at 7:26 PM
Making it a bit clearer that she's walking after leaving the
rooftop.
[7:27 PM]
Fainan lives in Mirkwood forest. The mirk there obstructs vision
often and she's out at night.
[7:28 PM]
Try listening for giant spiders!

:}
I'd prefer they leave me be and I leave them be :}
Varda Yesterday at 7:29 PM
One could wish.
Ar-Pharazon-V Yesterday at 7:29 PM
Yes, listening for other things does work. Providing the sound
myself is different.
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 7:29 PM
Because if they bother me, it's torch time :}
Varda Yesterday at 7:29 PM
Oops, there went the forest and my flet!
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 7:29 PM
But I solved your spider problem!
Varda Yesterday at 7:30 PM
And yes, fire in webs is great stuff to handle some problems. And
a torch at eight eyes, yep.
There's that. : )
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 7:30 PM
No one told me I wasn't allowed to cross the Godzilla Threshold :}
Varda Yesterday at 7:30 PM
It's in the fine print.
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 7:30 PM
Bah, I'm a Noldo. We don't waste our time with fine print :} If
it's not all there in the oath, then it's fair game :}
Varda Yesterday at 7:31 PM
Torch says "here's a target!".
Beware of Hobbit contracts then!
Just don't sign it.
[7:32 PM]
Is it too far-fetched?
Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 7:32 PM
I just add in a clause that says all rights to sue are waived in
exchange for offically recognizing Third Breakfast, and all is
well :}
Varda Yesterday at 7:33 PM

extra Enderi, which happens every twelfth year :} (edited)

Oops. You have fine print too.

Eonwλ Valar Yesterday at 7:38 PM
Get up earlier, have First Breakfast sooner, extend the time

:} Conversely, Third Breakfast could be the only recognized meal
on the Enderi :}
[7:39 PM]
Clarified above I'm referring to the extra 3 Enderi that happens
every 12th year in the Elvish Calendar.
Except for the 144th year, where there's only the regular 3
Enderi.
Varda Yesterday at 7:40 PM

Hearthstone:
Going well on the new reward track, gotten to level 31 already.
Got a Magister Dawngrasp legendary along the way, which is a hero
card based on the Dawngrasp mercenary.
[8:50 PM]
Getting a bunch of honor by playing more games than usual, and got
to 250 wins on the demon hunter along the way, unlocking a couple
of golden demon hunter cards
Gold's halfway towards next class skin already!
[8:51 PM]
Brawl is Tinyfin mode, allowing use of only common and rare cards
in your deck. Got a nice cheap pirate warrior deck which got me
some wins
[8:53 PM]
Continuing mercenaries, getting a few more heroic ones done in the
Barrens as I got quests for heroic bosses, and got 3 more mercs to
30: Samuro, Scabbs and Rokara.
WoW:
Farming a few more heroic bosses, no new progress, though. But
having fun
[8:54 PM]
In Torghast, I did a few more vault runs, this time saving up 1000
phantasma (basically spending nothing at the broken vendors along
the way) for the cosmetic cloaks the Vaults vendor can sell. And
indeed, managed to buy 2 of the 3 different ones!
[8:55 PM]
They look quite nice, golden cloaks with Torghast themes,
including a Jailer's Eye symbol.
[8:56 PM]
(oh, Hearthstone mention: New merc, Vanessa VanCleef, from the
reward track)
[8:57 PM]
Timewalking has started, first Legion one. Did all 5 for this
week, kinda fun seeing the old instances again after so long
[8:58 PM]
Also the mage tower has opened up for the duration, and I've been
trying the guardian challenge a few times, but it's the hardest
version of that particular fight. Seen some guides, seen some
nerfs to health, and I may give it a few more shots, but it might
be out of my reach, since it's a lot tougher than the old Legion
version where we could use legendaries.
[9:00 PM]
And with a new timewalking event, a new timewalking vendor! Bought
a new toy, the Nightborne Guard's Vigilance, as well as beautiful
magenta Val'sharah Hippogryph, which I'm using for now on my main
but also like for my void elf who's styled in that color as well
Varda Yesterday at 9:03 PM

Finally, the rogue alt! Got my poisony gnome from 35 to level 41,
completing the portion of the class campaign I can do below 45,
pushing into Azsuna, and getting 2 very good passives along the
way from leveling, Venomous Wounds which gives energy when your
bleeds tick, and Mastery rank 2, increasing bleed damage
significantly. Caldros was already fun to play, but now he's
getting quite powerful
[9:05 PM]
And I think that's my report for the week! On to level 45 next
week, if not more
And namarie!
