Before-meeting

Eonwë Valar11/11/2020
Scourge Invasion 3.0 has begun.

Eonwë Valar11/11/2020
I guess the Argent Crusade has already forgotten the Highlord of the Silver Hand.
November 13, 2020

Eonwë Valar11/13/2020
Nice that WoW finally has a way to pin a location on a map and share it. Sad that Wow maps don't also give us coordinates to go by.
[2:36 AM]
Cartography would be a great hobby to add to LotRO, if it came with the ability to leave/bury stuff in a place, even if it was sort of a "pin an item to this location for x hours or until claimed" kind of a thing. Imagine the fun that could be had with that.

Eonwë Valar11/13/2020
Got the new 34-slot bag from Bronjham. Yay me :} Now I can focus on grinding the scourgestones for the transmog and don't have to care about which bosses I kill, heh
[2:46 AM]
Too bad it's unique, but them's the breaks.(edited)

Eonwë Valar11/13/2020
You know, the transmog for this event doesn't look half bad for someone who wants an armor that doesn't look too off-the-wall.
[4:52 AM]
They should've grouped it as a set appearance though. Would've helped.
[4:55 AM]
*Note, speaking strictly of the Alliance plate version. They're unused Arathi Warfront armors, but even so, not a bad looking appearance overall.

[4:04 PM]
We also tried out a mild CSS code on it, seeing how it looks for future stories.
[4:05 PM]
Hope it is easy to read, functional, and nice looking, or at least clean looking.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:05 PM
guinea pig?
[4:05 PM]
looks fine to me

VardaYesterday at 4:05 PM
We've tried it on some others too.
[4:05 PM]
Good to hear!

Some of us have been doing a lot of running around in the new Elderslade and Elderslade War areas.
[4:12 PM]
I do. But I also show up during the week. Check out my leveling!

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:12 PM
ah

VardaYesterday at 4:13 PM
Well, after Eonwe puts it up. I just sent in the latest leveling for us all and character additions/deletions for all three servers.

Tolkien!

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:19 PM
Huh.
[4:19 PM]
I do like climbing stairs as a bear in WoW.

VardaYesterday at 4:19 PM
Oh, the bear people sometimes have a strange tilt on non-level surfaces, like straight out. Gravity-defying!
[4:20 PM]
Fixed now.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:20 PM
Fun when lying down.

VardaYesterday at 4:20 PM
The first bit of Tolkien is of course Arien's story.
[4:20 PM]
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/fiction/authors/Arien/stories/TurningTides.htm
[4:21 PM]
with her upcoming comments!
[4:21 PM]
What got you started on this particular take on the idea of a ship story?

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:22 PM
It was the topic for the anniversary .. well the theme for it

VardaYesterday at 4:22 PM
Could have been Sam Gamgee clutching the sides of a boat. You went for Corsairs. : )

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:23 PM
and  I was writing the story  .. yeah the idea first was a pirate story in fact .. starting in the second age maybe two half borthers .. , one a captured true numenorian boy and the other the son of the guy who stole her
[4:24 PM]
or forced her into marriage  ... but as i was writing the story .. it kind of changed
[4:25 PM]
the only thing that survived from that is the name of the ship  "Inzilmir* and "Maldun* the name of the captain of the merchant ship
[4:25 PM]

VardaYesterday at 4:25 PM
hehe

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:25 PM
It happens sometime when you write stories they take their life

VardaYesterday at 4:25 PM
The best kind. : )

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:25 PM
their own life

VardaYesterday at 4:26 PM
I like the play on the turn of the tides and the turn of the times. Well mixed!

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:26 PM
I kind of liked the idea once it got going .. We always write from the view of the winners of a war
[4:27 PM]
So writing from the loser side , and the changes that it might bring for them was fascinating
[4:28 PM]
We tend to think of those on Mordors side as villains or baddies but they are people, they are humans
[4:28 PM]
Sam has that kind of moment as he watches  that fight between the rangers of Ithilien and the Southrons

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:28 PM
Easy to see them as just numbers.

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:29 PM
and this young southron warrior is killed in front of his eyes
[4:30 PM]
He thinks there who might he have been? what was his name? Did he have family that he left behind and what brought him into this war?
[4:31 PM]
But back to the Story : Take this and the problem that the loss of the fleet might mean for a people that new not much else than fighting and stealing treasures  ..  bit different

VardaYesterday at 4:31 PM
(In the movie, it's Sam. In the book, Faramir is the one who speaks up about it.)

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:32 PM
Yes, I remembered Faramir saying it
[4:32 PM]
Do you think any news of ghost stories came back to Umbar?

VardaYesterday at 4:32 PM
But your point is the idea, not who said it. Good inspiration.

IrmoYesterday at 4:32 PM
Actually...in the movie it is Faramir

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:33 PM
Ah, yes, what varda said but in reverse

VardaYesterday at 4:33 PM
Guess I need to watch the movies again. Been too long. O the horror. ; )
[4:33 PM]
Thank you.

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:33 PM
hehe and i actuially brought in  a bit the knowledge of living on the coast

VardaYesterday at 4:34 PM
Great!

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:34 PM
I can imagine that the townpeople resorted to mass fishing having not much else that they were gtood at
[4:34 PM]
But Maldun kind of recognised that resource wouldn t last forever
[4:35 PM]
It is a problem we have in scottish waters so still releveant today
[4:36 PM]
Any other comments from you?

VardaYesterday at 4:38 PM
Found the spot. Sam was thinking about the dead man, not saying it aloud, and it was definitely Sam.
[4:39 PM]
TT "Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit" near the end.

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:39 PM

[4:39 PM]
glad my memory didn't quite fail me there

VardaYesterday at 4:40 PM
Maldun is a practical sort. He sees what is needed for his people and goes and does it.
[4:40 PM]
He is fortunate that Aragorn is the new king.

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:41 PM
indeed  he doesnt know what to expect not at all , he probably is afraid of it or nervous about it but he doesn't let this fear distract him
[4:41 PM]
And he is determined of course to help his people
[4:44 PM]
He might be a younger son . the father and brothers having gone to war and  has been left to guard his mother or the house

VardaYesterday at 4:45 PM
Good to have those , so whatever happens after the war, some are left to carry on. Have lots of kids!
[4:45 PM]
Thank you for writing this. Enjoyed reading it!
[4:46 PM]
Lots of flavor and makes one think.

IrmoYesterday at 4:46 PM
Indeed, well done Arien!

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:46 PM
 thank you

VardaYesterday at 4:46 PM
We had a mention in the previous meeting of Saruman in disguise.
Eomer mentions it and Gimli reminds the group of this again, which points it out even more in the story.
[4:47 PM]
The Two Towers, "The Riders of Rohan"
[4:47 PM]
(The Three Hunters. Gimli speaking):
Quote
[4:47 PM]
"If you wish to know what I think," he began again after a while, "I think it was Saruman. Who else? Remember the words of Eomer: he walks about like an old man hooded and cloaked. Those were the words.
[4:47 PM]
End Quote

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:48 PM
Yeah, I'm sure he's never seen anyone like that before

VardaYesterday at 4:48 PM
Saruman doesn't just stay in his tower. He's out there, looking, making mischief, not leaving it just to others.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:48 PM
Gandalf was Saruman all along!

VardaYesterday at 4:48 PM
hah!
[4:48 PM]
Gandalf the White. Saruman as he should have been. : )
[4:48 PM]
And he uses disguise.
[4:49 PM]
When looking at what Eomer said, it's more than one, and others noticed the resemblance too, like you said, Phar!
[4:49 PM]
Gimli is referring back to the earlier encounter with Eomer's riders, correctly and more concisely. This is what Eomer said, explaining the local situation:
[4:50 PM]
Quote
[4:50 PM]
"But at this time our chief concern is with Saruman. He has claimed lordship over all this land, and there has been war between us for many months. He has taken Orcs into his service, and Wolf-riders, and evil Men, and has closed the Gap against us, so that we are likely to be beset both east and west.
"It is ill dealing with such a foe: he is a wizard both cunning and dwimmer-crafter, having many guises.
He walks here and there, they say, as an old man hooded and cloaked, very like to Gandalf, as many now recall.
His spies slip through every net, and his birds of ill omen are abroad in the sky.
I do not know how it will all end, and my heart misgives me; for it seems to me that his friends do not all dwell in Isengard.
[4:51 PM]
End quote.
[4:51 PM]
"many guises".

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:52 PM
very like to Gandalf, yep

VardaYesterday at 4:52 PM
I wonder if he was around in other places in the story and we didn't know. Maybe one of the crebain or is that too unlikely?
[4:53 PM]
Even someone sending illusory wargs at the Fellowship on the hill? That was pretty weird, when the next day there were no signs of bodies.

[Lord of the Rings Online game tangent concerning disguises:]
Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:55 PM
an interesting figure in Lotro actually is that old hobbit woman in one of the bandit storylines at the beginning
[4:55 PM]
whats her name Sarah .. something
[4:55 PM]
do you remember her , Varda?
[4:56 PM]
clearly more powerful than what she seems and she insists on having her sick
[4:56 PM]
stick

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:56 PM
Lobelia?

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:58 PM
Hehe no actually not although it could have been maybe grin . She turns up in a couple of storylines  , sometimes as silent witness sometimes a bit more activ e and part of an escort
[4:58 PM]
It has been a while since i actually did those quests  but yeah it made me wonder whether she is not a wizard in disguise
[4:59 PM]
sorry was a bit of diversion

VardaYesterday at 4:59 PM
Sarah Oakheart

Arien  ValarYesterday at 4:59 PM
Saroa Oakheart

VardaYesterday at 4:59 PM
She shows up a lot and becomes a major storyline.
[5:00 PM]
tries not to tell spoilers

IrmoYesterday at 5:00 PM
Don't alk about Sara Oakheart/Narmeleth/Amarthiel, I have met her about 12 times over thew past 12 days
[5:00 PM]
I just spoi;ed :;)

VardaYesterday at 5:00 PM
A little. : )
[5:01 PM]
Laerdan's storyline mixes in with it too, can't leave him out. : )

IrmoYesterday at 5:01 PM
Fantastic storyline though
[5:01 PM]
They revamped it all since I did it 10 years ago
[5:02 PM]
And did a great job

VardaYesterday at 5:02 PM
Reasons to make new characters. I've seen so many updates, changes that way, and even a lot of changed landscape.

Arien  ValarYesterday at 5:02 PM

VardaYesterday at 5:02 PM
And those of you who get the chance, there's supposed to be  a launch at near 7:30 EST. [Note: Space X. First US ship to launch on a full mission, not just test, since shuttle days.]
[5:03 PM]
(I was checking Elon Musk's Twitter feed to make sure it was still a go. )

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:03 PM
Oh, that kind of launch.

IrmoYesterday at 5:03 PM
Anyway, with that spoiling act I must now take my leave  Way too late already, work tomorrow

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:03 PM
namarie!

VardaYesterday at 5:03 PM
(Star queen stuff)

Arien  ValarYesterday at 5:03 PM
Namarie , Irmo

VardaYesterday at 5:03 PM
Namarie Irmo!!

IrmoYesterday at 5:04 PM
Be well and have a good week!

VardaYesterday at 5:04 PM
It is that time. We have reached the hour.

Arien  ValarYesterday at 5:04 PM
you as well

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:04 PM
It would be wonderfully nerdish if he named a spacecraft "Varda".

VardaYesterday at 5:04 PM
hehehehe

Arien  ValarYesterday at 5:04 PM
Elentari 1

VardaYesterday at 5:04 PM

[5:05 PM]
ahh, good! A number!

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:05 PM

[5:05 PM]
vwoooooosh!!!
[5:05 PM]
the hammerpad leaps up and catches it before overshooting the table

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:06 PM

VardaYesterday at 5:06 PM

VardaYesterday at 5:11 PM
The ship is named Resilience. Star-queen will have to wait. ; )[edited for spelling]

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:11 PM

VardaYesterday at 5:11 PM
They had to clean up the seal on the hatch, but it seems fine now. Closed fine, now.
[5:11 PM]

Vingilot would be a cool name. : )

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:14 PM

VardaYesterday at 5:15 PM

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:15 PM

Love it when they mention Houston. : )

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:18 PM
I hope they don't have a problem!

VardaYesterday at 5:18 PM
Mission Control is the one that solves a ton of problems, or finds those who can. They even do some MacGyvering, heh.
[5:18 PM]
Not the only one, obviously, didn't mean that.
[5:19 PM]
But being from Houston, it's fun to hear. : )

Arien  ValarYesterday at 5:19 PM

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:19 PM

Arien  ValarYesterday at 5:19 PM
I can imagine
[5:19 PM]
But you live in Austin now isnt it?

VardaYesterday at 5:19 PM
Nope
[5:20 PM]
Houston suburb now
[5:20 PM]
Grew up in Houston.

Arien  ValarYesterday at 5:20 PM
ah cool

VardaYesterday at 5:21 PM
Back before they worried about national security, we went to NASA often. Got to look in the windows, wave to astronauts on the running track.
[5:21 PM]
They wave back. : )
[5:22 PM]
The parts of the spaceship would go on trucks through town, verrrry slowly, snarling traffic. Much rubbernecking besides just the slow trucks.
[5:22 PM]
Huge.
[5:23 PM]
Some of what we saw on the street went to the Moon.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:23 PM
Like the pieces of a giant jigsaw.

VardaYesterday at 5:23 PM
Right.
[5:25 PM]
Weather still good. That's the usual problem.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:26 PM
I love the idea of having so much control over the process, so much scientific progress and development, and we're still dependent on the weather for a project that takes so many millions.
[5:27 PM]
It's like... no matter how far we get, no matter how deep we calculate, no matter how much of a grip we've got on stuff, planet earth can still say "Ha ha, you can't launch your silly missile until I say so."

VardaYesterday at 5:28 PM
: )
[5:29 PM]
Eventually we'll launch from the Moon. Expect docking areas along the long flight routes.
[5:29 PM]
I wonder if our grandkids will be taking jobs out there. : )

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:29 PM
Ehhh, it'll be colony ships unless we find a way to beat the speed of light.

VardaYesterday at 5:30 PM
Depends on where you're thinking of going.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:30 PM
Maybe cryogenics but that always seems a bit risky.

VardaYesterday at 5:30 PM
Just to Mars isn't that bad.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:30 PM
Good point.

VardaYesterday at 5:30 PM
Go mine the nearby asteroids.
[5:30 PM]
Moon bases are already being planned.
[5:31 PM]
Go to Titan and other fun places.
[5:31 PM]
Lots to go to just inside the solar system.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:31 PM
I think the asteroid belts are a lot less dense than people think, though. Might not be worth the fuel.
[5:31 PM]
Titan could be fun.

VardaYesterday at 5:31 PM
Between solar systems is figured for about 200 years unless we have more break-throughs (and they will happen).
[5:32 PM]
Fuel is on the Moon and on the asteroids.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:32 PM
I suppose.

VardaYesterday at 5:32 PM
It's one of the items that excite folks, including the Chinese. Hoping to put it in their ships and bring it to Earth.
[5:32 PM]
Not talking oil, heh.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:33 PM
When it comes to cost/profit ratios I'll have to see it to believe it. It just seems ridiculously expensive to set all that up.

VardaYesterday at 5:33 PM
Helium-3

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:33 PM
But I'm no expert.

VardaYesterday at 5:34 PM
Start-up stuff is always expensive. Then work on it and get it streamlined.
[5:34 PM]
Helium-3 is all over the Moon and asteroids. Fill up on any of them.
[5:35 PM]
Easier to reach an asteroid than the Moon, thanks to being smaller. Less of a gravity problem to compensate for.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:35 PM
Easier to leave, too

VardaYesterday at 5:36 PM
Right

VardaYesterday at 6:25 PM
The white smoke of the white ship swirling against the black behind it, beautiful.

Try to get around while losing as few lives as possible, and gather 100% of the items!

Excuse me while I play through it again

Oh, and if you like, there's a sequel too!
[7:37 PM]
https://www.kongregate.com/games/PeachTreeOath/loot-loop-loot is the second game! A rogue-like fastpaced upgrade where you move from level to level, killing enemies automatically over time, and having to choose upgrades from 3 items after each fight, or none.
    Kongregate
    Loot Loop Loot
A speed run roguelite based on rapid loot decisions.

This game is the 2nd of several prototypes I#39m kicking out. Follow us on Discord for news on upcoming gam...

[7:38 PM]
When you run out of time - and dying costs you 30 seconds - your run ends, but there's many levels across multiple pathways and each first completion gives a permanent reward, so you can progress further and further hopefully
[7:44 PM]
https://www.kongregate.com/games/lostvector/bowmaster-prelude is the third game! A castle defense game, where you face waves of enemies from the other side with another castle, and you have to fire arrows and summon warriors of your own. Save gold, buy more stuff, and let your arrows and soldiers get experience as they go!
    Kongregate
    Bowmaster Prelude

[7:44 PM]
For the badge this week I had to get 600 damage in a single shot, piercing arrow is recommended as with some luck you can strike through multiple enemies, which is how I suddenly got over 1400 damage out of nowhere
[7:51 PM]
Also pay attention to the sounds.. someone commented it sounds like they were made by homer simpson

Blizzard gaming:
[8:16 PM]
Heroes of the Storm:
1 level gained, from 433 to 434! Stitches to level 7. Also first Dehaka play since he got changed. I quite like the buff to one of his ultimates, in particular, getting 5 essence per hit on a hero makes for great sustainability
[8:19 PM]
Hearthstone:
The new features are in! Reward track based on xp, gotten from dailies and the new feature of weekly quests. Also achievements, though as a lot of them are for very random situations or game modes I don't like, I'll just let them come naturally instead of hunting down as many as I can.
[8:19 PM]
The Progression ones should be good, anyway, for levels and wins and daily quests done
[8:20 PM]
Weekly quests mean I need to be a lot more active, because one of them is always to win 7 ranked matches a week, rather than the at least 5 a month I've been doing
[8:20 PM]
But it's fun to get a bit more active in that way, and I even got the demon hunter to level 29 as I went.
[8:22 PM]
Getting along the reward track to level 50 could be rather interesting, as I've only gotten to 15 so far and the xp needed rises per level, but the lower levels have nice rewards too, alongside a lot of gold.
[8:22 PM]
Level 1 comes with a random legendary, which was for me a legendary hunter weapon, which I didn't even know existed!
[8:23 PM]
Tavern brawl is an interesting deckbuilder where you pick 20 minions, get 10 random classes, and each turn you summon 1 minion from your opponent's deck.
[8:24 PM]
I shoved a bunch of cheap battlecry minions in mine because those don't activate when directly summoned, which seemed to do the trick
[8:25 PM]
Oh, and there's also a new mode called Duels, which is basically a deck-building adventure mode but against other players, so pretty much adventure + arena combined.
[8:25 PM]
I don't like arena, and I'm not a big fan of adventures, but there's a few legendary quests to win duels and a weekly quest to win brawls, duels or battlegrounds... so I'll be doing lots of duels anyway, and seeing what sticks
[8:26 PM]
WoW:
[8:28 PM]
More raiding. We killed Jaina once again, and I got my mythic mount at last  A nice ice elemental which is identical to the one Jaina's statue has. We've had our last Nyalotha raid tonight, since there's only one reset left to the expansion and in that one we'll just be doing a Jaina run, which means 2 more Jaina runs to do before expansion. Hopefully get a few more people their mounts... and then Shadowlands are here!
[8:30 PM]
Pre-expansion event is here! Quests to do, dailies to grind, commendations to farm, stuff to buy! I've done the week 1 questline to the end, unlocking dailies and farming enough commendations to not only get the few gear appearances (leather) I was missing, but also buy the pet (Putrid Geist) and the broom which really should've been a toy. It just summons a sweeping broom, but eh.
[8:30 PM]
I've also tackled Nathanos, the new worldboss, and saw the cutscene, which was quite impressive... but alas, he was right, we'll probably find his soul again in the Shadowlands.
[8:30 PM]
I'm also occasionally farming Bronjahm for the bag but no luck yet!
[8:31 PM]
In the spirit of both the Icecrown event and the ice elemental, I decided to create myself an icy transmog outfit, as well as ice bear and catforms. It'll do nicely until the expansion launches
[8:32 PM]
weekly quest is battlegrounds, which went rather well in guardian, I even got the achievement for Kotmogu temple to contribute a total amount of points through holding the spheres!
[8:33 PM]
And finally, more stuff gotten!
[8:33 PM]
Starting with my last follower, Kiruud the Relentless, so now I have all 299 WoD garrison followers.
[8:34 PM]
I've deactivated and am reactivating 20 followers I want to see in my garrison, but i'm not sure if it's working yet. We'll see.
[8:34 PM]
I also got a new toy! The flopping fish through Nazjatar paragon supplies. Funny little thing.
[8:35 PM]
And finally a new pet, the Crimson Skipper, from the Honey Smasher outdoor boss in Stormsong. So now I don't have to kill him every day anymore!
[8:35 PM]
And I think that's it for the week!

[8:37 PM]
Including the shop hat, which I got in a bundle; the polar resistance set I got to make at the end of vanilla so long ago and which finally sees some use again, the weapon from Ahune and.. a tabard I'm not quite happy yet. The one I really want for this set comes from the Argent Tournament but no champion's seals can be got while pre-expansion event is going on in that area
[8:37 PM]
*happy with yet
