VardaToday at 4:12 PM
hah, I am posting in the wrong channel
Tolkien:
Did the Fellowship have any rough moments getting together?
What helped them get over those rough moments? How did they get to
know they could trust each other?
Some of them already knew each other or heard of each other, not
always a plus.
Gandalf was already friends with Bilbo and therefore Frodo grew up
with him and trusted him.
The other hobbits also knew Gandalf somewhat and trusted Frodo.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:12 PM
You're in Tolkien already? Did we get a timezone switch again?

Gandalf and Aragorn were already friends.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:15 PM
Aragorn and Gandalf knew each other as well, but Aragorn did not
know the hobbits, and they had trouble trusting him.
VardaToday at 4:15 PM
Aragorn and Gandalf already knew Legolas.
True, Phar.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:16 PM
Gandalf (and Bilbo) knew Gloin, but did they know Gimli?
VardaToday at 4:16 PM
They might have met him, but really know him? Probably just as the
kid tagging along with Gloin.
Aragorn as Strider found that Gandalf was unavailable and tried to
become the guide for the hobbits.
They didn't trust him. How did he get past that?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:18 PM
Something about... feeling fair?
or smelling fair?
(or tasting fair?)
VardaToday at 4:18 PM
That was Frodo's comment. I doubt he smelled very fair though.
Aragorn warned Frodo that Pippin was telling too much.
Like you said, Frodo's sense of people told him that Aragorn looked
foul but felt fair, not like the servants of the Enemy. So he heard
him out.
Aragorn's sword was broken when he showed it to them.
I wonder. He uses torches at Weathertop, doesn't have Anduril until
Rivendell. What's he been using for Ranger duties all this time?
Aragorn quoted poetry that Frodo knew, that referred to himself.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:20 PM
Wouldn't a ranger use a bow? Maybe he forgot it in the inn
VardaToday at 4:20 PM
We don't see him use a bow except in the movie, but it seems likely.
Aragorn protected them from the Nazgul by moving them to another
room, so the attack went to the wrong place.
Aragorn proved himself at Weathertop and by guiding them to
Rivendell as promised, with many chances to do them harm but instead
taking care of them.
By the time they reach Rivendell, Aragorn and the hobbits are pretty
good about feeling trust in each other.
They don't belong to the Enemy.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:21 PM
Nothing quite like fighting a few undead wraiths together.
VardaToday at 4:21 PM
True!
At Rivendell, strangers had to get together to help Frodo take the
Ring to Mt. Doom, even if only to travel partway. They didn't know
each other, mostly.
Aragorn knew Legolas but the first words we hear are that Aragorn
says the Mirkwood elves, therefore Legolas, betrayed his trust in
keeping Gollum jailed.
ArwenToday at 4:22 PM
hello
VardaToday at 4:22 PM
Arwen! Aiya!
ArwenToday at 4:22 PM
VardaToday at 4:22 PM
Just in time to help us with our Tolkien chat.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:23 PM
Aiya!
VardaToday at 4:23 PM
We were figuring how the Fellowship got past not knowing each other,
or knowing only bad things, to become friends.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:23 PM
Probably jealous that Legolas got to use a bow.
VardaToday at 4:23 PM
hah!
And a knife even!
ArwenToday at 4:23 PM
they read the script?
VardaToday at 4:23 PM
Sneaky.
FalcoToday at 4:23 PM
Aiya
VardaToday at 4:23 PM
Aiya Falco! : )
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:23 PM
Aiya!
ArwenToday at 4:23 PM
though that is a doylist approach to the question
VardaToday at 4:24 PM
Maybe they struggled through JRRT's notes on the backs of envelopes
and napkins?
ArwenToday at 4:24 PM
hehe
Arthur Conan Doyle vs John Watson, from the external point of view
of the author, they got past the things because they had to
VardaToday at 4:25 PM
I like JRRT's showing how they managed to become friends, not just
forced together although they had that too.
ArwenToday at 4:26 PM
cause JRRT needed them to, to provide the tapestry of the story
VardaToday at 4:26 PM
And he had to have a story to explain his invented languages.
Gimli didn't trust Legolas because Legolas's father had jailed
Gimli's father. Gloin was sitting beside Gimli and called Legolas's
words into question saying the wood-elves weren't so kind to the
dwarves as they had been to Gollum.
Also, the dwarves and elves in general had a history where each side
said the other betrayed them.
That's a lot of negatives. How did Legolas get past those?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:26 PM
Yeah, I didn't see the elves let the dwarves get out to play in a
tree.
VardaToday at 4:27 PM
The dwarves might have considered that punishment?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:27 PM
hehe
ArwenToday at 4:27 PM
lol
VardaToday at 4:27 PM
Legolas turned aside the accusations at the meeting by telling what
had happened.
ArwenToday at 4:28 PM
was there one event that helped turn things around?
VardaToday at 4:28 PM
Shooting a lot of wargs before they reached the group on the way to
Moria had to help.
ArwenToday at 4:28 PM
group violence - check
VardaToday at 4:29 PM
yay group violence! O wait. It meant the wargs weren't chewing on
their boots.
Shooting a flying nazgul's mount so it crashed and didn't keep
chasing the Ring didn't hurt.
ArwenToday at 4:31 PM
for some reason I keep thinking of the disney song from beauty and a
the beast - something there
VardaToday at 4:31 PM
Seeing the inner person?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:31 PM
I know a lot of the songs, but I don't remember that one...
ArwenToday at 4:31 PM
people looking past what they think is true, impressions passed down
from others or assumptions and stereotypes to see the person that is
actually in front of them

VardaToday at 4:32 PM
Thanks!
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:32 PM
Yeah, I'd forgotten about that one. The tune's familiar though.
ArwenToday at 4:33 PM
indeed
I think it is something that happens a lot, in books, movies, life
the process of people becoming actual people to others
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:34 PM
Wait. Is this a reprise of the interlude in the "Belle" song from
the start of the movie?
VardaToday at 4:34 PM
It's important. Needs shown. And it's always magical even in real
life.
ArwenToday at 4:34 PM
instead of people shaped puppets
VardaToday at 4:34 PM
So you typing pixel people are real???
ArwenToday at 4:34 PM
lol
yes
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:34 PM
Am I? Who knows for sure?
VardaToday at 4:34 PM
You fake it really well.
ArwenToday at 4:35 PM
its a truth of modern life, I think, that we live amongst hundreds
of thousands of people that we don't know
VardaToday at 4:35 PM
You can interact in great ways. :
So many to get to know!
ArwenToday at 4:35 PM
you pass them in the hall, you sit in the waiting room with them,
but they're just people shaped, for the most part
VardaToday at 4:35 PM
and those thousands have many shared experiences, such as movies!
and books!
ArwenToday at 4:35 PM
true
VardaToday at 4:35 PM
and games!
ArwenToday at 4:35 PM
but the process of getting to know the individual is interesting
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:35 PM
If it's a hospital waiting room, they might not even be
people-shaped!
VardaToday at 4:36 PM
and grumping about work!
ArienVToday at 4:36 PM
Aiya Arwen  have we met before or has it been such a long
time :)?
VardaToday at 4:36 PM
You have. It's been a long time.
ArwenToday at 4:36 PM
putting aside the things that you think you know about someone, from
what they look like or what their names are or where you see them,
etc
VardaToday at 4:36 PM
Arwen is a real life friend since, maybe we shouldn't say how
long? ; )
Been in the guild a long time.
ArwenToday at 4:36 PM
so a dwarf knows certain things about an elf, because an elf is an
elf, right? :stuck_out_tongue:
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:36 PM
60? 70? It cannot be 80!
ArwenToday at 4:37 PM
22 or 23 years, we've known each other?
20 year high school reunion this year
VardaToday at 4:37 PM
You joined in 2004.
ArwenToday at 4:37 PM
yes, but we knew each other since I summer after 10th grade for me
:stuck_out_tongue:
you and I, rather
VardaToday at 4:37 PM
You were best friends with my daughter, Eowyn, and became friends
with all of us.
ArienVToday at 4:37 PM
that IS a long time  in the eyes of an elf of course
just a blink of the eye
ArwenToday at 4:37 PM
guild, I played with as a friend for awhile before that
VardaToday at 4:38 PM
Aye, nice to find a few solid numbers. : )
And Arwen has become quite the artist. : )
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:39 PM
Arwen and Eowyn, best friends? That sounds rather nice.
VardaToday at 4:40 PM
That does, doesn't it!
Can't trust an elf, right?
ArwenToday at 4:41 PM
lol
sounds like something a dwarf might say
VardaToday at 4:42 PM
It was, at least in the movie.
ArwenToday at 4:42 PM
and dwarves and elves have such different viewpoints
dwellers in the deeps, vs trees and sky and nature
etc
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:42 PM
Dwarf viewpoint tends to be a bit lower.
ArwenToday at 4:43 PM
bellybotton height?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:43 PM
Axe to the ankles, that sort of thing.
ArwenToday at 4:43 PM
indeed
shared experiences, I think, go a long way towards making people
into friends as well
VardaToday at 4:44 PM
Agreed! Respect during those is part of it.
I gained a lot of respect for Arwen when she visited us and enjoyed
her sweet nature. Same idea.
So the Fellowship learned to respect each other, see their natures.
It took time where they were together and could respect each other's
abilities, but warmth didn't come until Gimli's request for a hair
from Galadriel, instead of gold, without realizing what an amazing
treasure he was getting as she had refused such a request from royal
Feanor himself.
That's when Legolas knew for sure that Gimli was not the greedy,
graspy dwarf type he had heard about.
Even a bit of a romantic. : )
And hearing Gimli's description of the Glittering Caves.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:47 PM
Feanor asked for hair as well? What's with people asking for an elf
woman's hair?
VardaToday at 4:47 PM
How about Pippin? He was considered too young to go on the journey.
It was special hair. It had both the gold and the silver of more
than one line of elf.
ArienVToday at 4:48 PM
Pippin ... he was cheery, adventurous , curios and had courage and
adaptable
and loyal
VardaToday at 4:48 PM
He helped keep up spirits, most likely.
Gave them someone to worry about besides themselves.
Merry, for instance, was like a caretaker as well as good buddy.
ArienVToday at 4:49 PM
i d guess so and of course .. he was of good descent , of good
family and with his father having the say in Tookland it was ideal
to organise the defence
VardaToday at 4:50 PM
He needed to learn, to be able to lead his people when he became
Thain. I don't think it was an accident that he was there.
ArienVToday at 4:50 PM
good thinking yes
VardaToday at 4:51 PM
Boromir was an unknown and was second called after his brother. No
one knew him.
For him to come alone following rumors to learn the meaning of the
visions showed deep courage.
But he showed a problem right away, that worried the others in the
Fellowship
ArienVToday at 4:52 PM
He wanted to use the ring for good , for the aid of Gondor
VardaToday at 4:52 PM
Right. That's how he saw it. Don't waste it! Very modern attitude,
heh.
ArienVToday at 4:52 PM
as a weapon
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:53 PM
The irony being that they did indeed use the ring as a weapon
against Sauron... by destroying it.
VardaToday at 4:53 PM
Exactly! The most devastating thing that could be done. Brought down
his works.
He believed the visions were telling of finding the Ring as hope for
Gondor and saw the visions more as warning of a threat to Gondor
rather than all of Arda, because to him Gondor was his whole world.
He didn't have the wide view that others in the group did.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:54 PM
No doubt he would've wanted to use it after Sauron's defeat, too, if
that had been possible.
VardaToday at 4:54 PM
He worried the group because of his interest in using the Ring
against Sauron and his belief that it was Gondor alone doing the
real standing up against Sauron.
Aye, that's what they all feared. Anyone who had it would keep using
it.
He didn't want to recognize Aragorn's being King of Gondor and
Arnor. Besides not seeing much when he looked at the ragged and
unknown Ranger, his own line had been ruling Gondor a very long time
as Stewards, his father was the current Steward, and he was next in
line.
He was glad to take Aragorn with him to Minas Tirith with his nifty
sword to help in the fight.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:57 PM
Good fighters are always welcome.
VardaToday at 4:58 PM
He would have taken the Ring and the whole group to Minas Tirith if
he could have.
Elves, dwarves, and hobbits didn't seem like much help to him, as
they had not been helpful in the battles of Gondor in his memory; he
had to get over what was close to being contempt.
Eventually, he could accept Legolas who intended to go with Aragorn
to help fight at Minas Tirith.
Gimli was an unknown but over time appeared to be going to Minas
Tirith also.
The hobbits and Gandalf, however, intended to stick with Frodo.
To me, as stealthy as hobbits were, this sounds pretty good.
Did Boromir become accepted?
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:04 PM
Membernews: My birthday just started!
VardaToday at 5:04 PM
Huzzah! throws sparkles of colors all around! Sends a birthday
cake to that hole in the ground
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:04 PM
Boromir... got accepted by Aragorn, and by at least 2 hobbits
posthumously, I recall.
VardaToday at 5:05 PM
and an elf and dwarf who were there, aye.
Also, they had learned to trust him as a fine fighter with the
group. His betrayal caught them (and him) somewhat by surprise.
The others understood the temptation he was under. They must have
all felt it, but had better background, perhaps, to handle it.
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:07 PM
Men seemed to be the most inclined to be tempted by rings.
Elves... somewhat, but not entirely.
VardaToday at 5:08 PM
Faramir would have been all right, I think, compared to Boromir.
ArienVToday at 5:08 PM
congratulattions
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:08 PM
Yep, part of personality as well.
VardaToday at 5:08 PM
The wood-elves didn't live by a Ring as the others did, a real help
I think.
ArienVToday at 5:08 PM
Happy birthday
Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:08 PM
Thanks
VardaToday at 5:11 PM
JRRT understood the concept of a fellowship very well, from his time
in the military, from his friends in the Inklings with whom he
shared so many interests.
It shows in his writing. It's not instant, it's developed over time,
becomes very strong, lasting far past the reason they first came
together.
It's past the hour. Any more comments on anything? (We can also
continue during After-meeting if a thought suddenly comes out of the
blue.)
the gavel marches up to the hammerpad

Heroes of the Storm:

Hearthstone:
Not quite leveled any of the classes yet, but 7 of the 9 classes are
sitting against the edge now. Tavern brawl was an oldy, with one

reminded of the weird tools each has in his arsenal. But I did
manage to get Ragnaros down as Nefarian before he really got good
use out of his upgrade hero ability.
WoW:
We got Mekkatorque down on heroic! Lots of practice, especially with
hiding away with bombs and sabotaging the little bots. Got some
gloves out of it which are best for guardian spec, and have a bonus
of making engineer-made mounts go faster. I've only got one of those
I can use on my (non-engineer) druid, so I'll be back to riding my
Mekgineer's Chopper for a while just to make use of it
Old panda raiding went well! In fact, we finished getting all the
pets already. Living Amber and Ravenous Prideling gotten from the
Heart of Fear raid, which completed the achievement and got the
reward pet: Happiness!
Next week it'll be back to mount-hunting, as we go back to Dragon
Soul to get my friend his last drake for the drake achievement, but
we're also thinking of keeping one of the Pandaria raids on our
roster, since it gives a celestial dragon mount
Also got one more pet from pet charms, the Accursed Hexxer, which is
unlocked by doing a small one-off quest in Nazmir, available to both
factions, and can then be bought by horde vendors or the pet
smuggler in Boralus. With 500 charms spent on that, I'm done with
the pets from vendors I've unlocked so far, and have started saving
up for an item which will raise my pet cap from 1500 to 2000, but
that costs 1000 charms. So it'll take a while, but it'll be the
biggest single purchase
I've also done Children's Week, the questline with the new Kul Tiran
orphan for this year. I've still only got one character of the right
level range for this expansion, so could only get one of the 4 pets
offered after showing him around Kul Tiras, mostly going on land
mount just for the fun of it. So with that I've got the Froglet, and
the other 3 pets will have to wait for following years.
Weekly is timewalks, pandaria this time, the last timewalk week
before the Draenor timewalk week shows up for the first time, so
kinda almost special. Looking forward to that one where I'll be able
to buy both mounts immediately. I'm at 3 out of 5 timewalks for this
week, will do the others tomorrow.
And that's my report for the week!

..Going over the meeting, did you say that Andiun sounds like
Anduin?
You do know the character is actually called Anduin as well, right?
So it's actually the same as the river
