https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding_anniversary
    Wedding anniversary
A wedding anniversary is the anniversary of the date a wedding took place.
Traditional names exist for some of them: for instance, fifty years of marriage is called a "golden wedding anniversary"
or simply a "golden anniversary" or "golden wedding".

Thank you, Arien. : )

The next story up is "The Island":

The Island ch. 1 "Getting Acquainted"

Gaming:
Eonwe says he probably won't be able to make it tonight.
He has been working hard for us behind the scenes figuring out some cool new coding for the whole site. We'll see how much we can implement, as I'm not really a coder.
Also he found the time to put up gaming news for us:

Lots of holiday happenings across all games!
Feel free to mention it for your own games.

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:18 PM
Was leafing through that Island one.
As one of the few people I know who watched Lost all the way and still was able to make some sense of it, it looks quite interesting

VardaLast Sunday at 4:19 PM
ah neato. Helps to have seen the show "The Island" with Merry, er, Dominic Monaghan, but don't have to.
You should recognize some of what happens then. : )

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:27 PM
I'll share the tale of a Hearthstone experience with Fladrif

VardaLast Sunday at 4:27 PM
Cool! Thanks.

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:28 PM
The brawl this week is a christmas/winter  veil related one, with each side getting a gift from greatfather winter, and it being replaced on a player's turn when it's no longer there. Whoever destroys a gift, whether your own or the enemy's, gets the choice of a great card with a huge mana discount. So it's a major advantage.
I logged into Hearthstone a few days ago, and found Fladrif battling in the brawl, and decided to spectate how he was doing in his.. paladin deck, I believe.
He was doing rather well, but I'd created a rather unbalanced warlock deck complete with cards focused on gift destruction; the warlock especially has a focus on destroying your own minions. Usually a risk or sacrifice, but in this case it was a double advantage
So I watched him play a few matches, did a random one myself, and then we decided to try our decks against each other.
My broken warlock deck destroyed his, but that was fine; he decided to make a variation of it on his own and try it out himself. To great success!
And finally, of course, we had to pitch our two warlock decks against each other :stuck_out_tongue:
And it was glorious! Hilarious! And way longer than either of us had expected. It took about half an hour, almost depleting both our decks, with some brilliantly funny plays.
One of the best matches I've ever played.
It was pretty close too; I think I only won due to some lucky gifts
And to show there were no hard feelings, we helped each other out with a few quick quests afterwards.
So we had good fun for several hours, and I just wanted to share it :0
* :slight_smile:
And that was my gaming news, though more personal news will of course follow at the aftermeeting

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:40 PM
Aiya!

FalcoLast Sunday at 4:41 PM
Aiya!

VardaLast Sunday at 4:42 PM
One thing JRRT believed in was that fantasy could give beautiful moments of sudden understanding or clarity. Anyone remember the term?

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:42 PM
Ehr, the only term that comes to mind is revelation.

VardaLast Sunday at 4:42 PM
Not bad!
eucatastrophe

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:42 PM
Aha.

VardaLast Sunday at 4:43 PM
JRRT tells about it in a couple of places: Letters 89, and "On Fairy-Stories".
Eu is Greek for "good", the next part also Greek is for "destruction">
He coined the word, so it's not something seen everywhere.

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:45 PM
He did have a way with languages.

VardaLast Sunday at 4:45 PM
: )
He says in the Letter:
the sudden happy turn in a story which pierces you with a joy that brings tears (which I argued it is the highest function of fairy-stories to produce). And I was there led to the view that it produces its peculiar effect because it is a sudden glimpse of Truth, your whole nature chained in material cause and effect, the chain of death, feels a sudden relief as if a major limb out of joint had suddenly snapped back.
It perceives – if the story has literary 'truth' on the second plane (....) – that this is indeed how things really do work in the Great World for which our nature is made.
And I concluded by saying that the Resurrection was the greatest 'eucatastrophe' possible in the greatest Fairy Story – and produces that essential emotion: Christian joy which produces tears because it is qualitatively so like sorrow, because it comes from those places where Joy and Sorrow are at one, reconciled, as selfishness and altruism are lost in Love."
.
"On Fairy-Stories" has more:
.
But the 'consolation' of fairy-tales has another aspect than the imaginative satisfaction of ancient desires.
Far more important is the Consolation of the Happy Ending.
Almost I would venture to assert that all complete fairy-stories must have it.
At least I would say that Tragedy is the true form of Drama, its highest function; but the opposite is true of Fairy-story.
Since we do not appear to possess a word that expresses this opposite — I will call it Eucatastrophe.
The eucatastrophic tale is the true form of fairy-tale, and its highest function.
.

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:48 PM
An interesting thought... because I remember many classic fairytales originally having quite gruesome turns and endings.

VardaLast Sunday at 4:48 PM
Agreed. And could be called tragedies.
JRRT continues:
The consolation of fairy-stories, the joy of the happy ending: or more correctly of the good catastrophe, the sudden joyous “turn” (for there is no true end to any fairy-tale): this joy, which is one of the things which fairy-stories can produce supremely well, is not essentially 'escapist', nor 'fugitive'. In its fairy-tale—or otherworld—setting, it is a sudden and miraculous grace: never to be counted on to recur.
It does not deny the existence of dyscatastrophe, of sorrow and failure: the possibility of these is necessary to the joy of deliverance; it denies (in the face of much evidence, if you will) universal final defeat and in so far is evangelium, giving a fleeting glimpse of Joy, Joy beyond the walls of the world, poignant as grief.
It is the mark of a good fairy-story, of the higher or more complete kind, that however wild its events, however fantastic or terrible the adventures, it can give to child or man that hears it, when the “turn” comes, a catch of the breath, a beat and lifting of the heart, near to (or indeed accompanied by) tears, as keen as that given by any form of literary art, and having a peculiar quality."
./end quotes

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:50 PM
As someone who watched the 30 minute finale of the Starcrafts series this very afternoon... I can already think of several moments where that occurs

VardaLast Sunday at 4:50 PM
Sounds interesting.
We hear so little of Joy, that this seemed to be a good time to bring it up. : )
We need to see the joy as well as all the other.
What did you see in StarCraft? spoiler alert

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 4:53 PM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zom0687XCE for the finale; I actually watched it through the youtube feature on our big tv, which was great. That lifting of the heart and accompanying of tears happens several times in the epilogue, but there's also some moments in the battle itself.

We are coming up on the hour.

Oh, and now maybe to get a laugh:
For some years now, I've been collecting "kongpanions" on the Kongregate gaming website, through the badges I've mentioned.

VardaLast Sunday at 5:22 PM
Intriguing

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 5:23 PM
Each week there's a new kongpanion to earn, and since a few months they've been announced 2 days in advance by silhouette on a forumthread.

VardaLast Sunday at 5:23 PM
Sounds like pets?

Ar-Pharazon-VLast Sunday at 5:23 PM
So a bunch of people in said thread decided to use said silhouette and, rather than make the obvious predictions, come up with silly things that fit the silhouettes.
Yes, collectable pets/companions, though they don't serve much of a purpose other than collecting and looking at them
I'm not too good at drawing, but since a week or two I've joined in, coming up with silly original ideas with a rather flat artstyle, and in the christmas spirit, I wanted to share mine for this week.
https://cdn1.kongcdn.com/assets/files/0002/7268/Teaser_122319_Small.png is the original silhouette. Probably gonna be some four-legged creature with a christmas hat, right?

I decided to think out of the box and go with https://i.imgur.com/vA0SC6f.png

So I hope you enjoy it!

Personal gaming report:

3 new flashgames!
https://www.kongregate.com/games/konrda15/snake-incremental is the first game, basically an idle game without idling.
    Kongregate
    Snake Incremental
    Snake with upgrades.
Play snake, collect coins, get achievements for more coins, and spend coins on lots and lots of upgrades.
Upgrade your coin value, your length bonus, your playing field, your speed and even magnetic attraction. See how long it takes to get all the achievements!
As you upgrade your maximum speed you can change the speed at will; higher speed makes it faster to get points, but harder to steer. Still, can be useful sometimes!

https://www.kongregate.com/games/thepodge/dibbles-4-a-christmas-crisis for the second game! A lemmings-like puzzle-game series, and this is the fourth in the series, christmas themed. A bit weird to send creatures to their death along a haunting christmas tune, but still a fun game!
    Kongregate
    Dibbles 4: A Christmas Crisis
The Dibbles return once again, but this time our King is on a new Christmas themed mission. Command the Dibbles and help their king safely cross 33 Xmas themed...

https://www.kongregate.com/games/taccommandeur/hat-wizard-christmas for the last game, more christmas-themed  Platformer, make your way through levels, collect gifts, and use your magic hat to switch with enemies (or snowmen) to complete puzzles and avoid getting shot!

    Hat Wizard Christmas
Santa put Faust#39s goons on the naughty list, but then they stole all the presents from his storage.
Now you have to use your hat to get back the presents and s...

Blizzard gaming:
Heroes of the Storm:
New event started! A new iteration of last year's toy event, another run over a gameboard with quests to finish along the way; random quests for every roll of the dice and longer specific quests for each domino you reach. Still on the first longer quest for 50 takedowns, but I'll get there  Many rewards to get!
No new levels reached, still at 380.
Hearthstone:
Well, I already mentioned the brawl and the fun I had there with Fladrif. But also, I completed my quest to hit max level with all 9 classes, ending with the warlock and the priest!
All the basic cards are golden now, and I suppose the next goal is to get them to 500 wins and beyond. Still considering updating my decks for more wins, since even at rank 20 I still lose a lot, but they all have some winning potential, so it might not be necessary.
For my quests I am focusing now on the heroes with the least wins, though with most of the new quests not actually requiring winning, I can still complete them without getting too frustrated with losing streaks.
With the level grind done, I also intend to shift some focus to the single player adventures, and I have more than enough dust to craft any cards from sets I don't buy packs from anymore if I need them. So all I need to get a start on that is.. well, time!
WoW:
No more raiding, giving me some time to catch up on a few other things.
This includes fighting more green dragons; I finally got the staff I wanted, Rampant Growth, which looks really nice for a druid. Now all I need is 2 less important items from 2 specific green dragons, which means I can skip the other two whenever they're up.
With Winter Veil starting, I also took up another daily task of completing the Greench daily every day with my main, to get a Lost Present reward. Only thing I want from that is the Flames of Ragnaros illusion, with a very low chance, but since it doesn't take too much time and is now the only source other than the black market auction house, it's worth doing.
Weekly quest is arena skirmishes. Usually takes some time, but I found out that rather than dpsing in feral spec, guardian tanking spec is actually really good in arena.
The tempo is more my style, and the optimal spec for it is really close to my usual bear spec as well, so on top of it being better in itself, I'm also better at it
Got wins at a lot faster rate than usual, sometimes soloing two enemies after my teammate was already dead. Pretty sure I won more than I lost, which is exceptional for me, and completed the quest for 10 wins on the first night of the reset, which is practically unique
But the biggest thing.. I bought the Cat Pack!
Part of the Winter Veil discount shop offers is a single pack including 3 cat mounts and 4 cat pets from previous years.
Video found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig8d-ZdrpSU
    YouTube
    World of Warcraft
    World of Warcraft Cat Pack
Many precious sabers and kittens, some flying, some with other special abilities, for up to 65% discount. Since I had none of them so far - despite really liking some of them, mostly the pets - I decided to go for it, and got the full discount with all 7 cats. 40 euros for the lot, which would normally only buy the 4 pets alone, let alone the more expensive mounts.
The Cinder Kitten goes especially well with my Druid of the Flame catform toy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hqhIxYo1K8 actually has more views (is the EU version) if you want more comments, though most are complaints about cosmetic consumerism and throwing discounts in our face
    YouTube
    World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft Cat Pack (EU)

But the way I figure it, it's not much different from buying a digital deluxe or retail collectors' edition for the free goodies, and there won't be a better time to get these kitties if you want them.
And if you want, you could even use in-game gold to buy tokens, convert it to balance and buy the stuff with that. Sometimes cheaper in gold than actual in-game mounts!
Oh, one more thing for Hearthstone: Went through about 20 Uldum packs to find a specific rare card for that warlock deck I mentioned for the brawl. Never did find that rare, and ended up crafting it, but I did end up with 2 legendary quest cards, which is pretty low odds for something of that quality!
So yay
