I'm trying to put up this 25-chapter story by Shirebound but only have a little up. Consider it a sneak preview. : )
"By Chance or Purpose"
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/fiction/authors/Shirebound/ByChanceorPurpose01.htm
By Chance or Purpose ch. 1 "The Doom of Men"
    fanfiction pre-LotR AU. The
journey taken by the hobbits and Aragorn from Bree to Rivendell:
If the bond between Frodo and Aragorn from "Quarantined"
had been set up before the hobbits met Strider in Bree, how might
this fateful journey have been diffe...

ElrondToday at 4:08 PM
Celebrian and I put up 156lbs of home grown pork, and loaded the other pig which my dad will pick up tomorrow to take off. We have been enjoying some really good bacon I cured/smoked.

VardaToday at 4:08 PM
Wow, that's a lot of meat and work. Congratulations!
mmm bacon!

AnarionToday at 4:09 PM
Interesting. I wouldn't think that a pre-existing relationship between Frodo and Aragorn would change that much, but I suppose could see that branching out a lot

ElladanToday at 4:09 PM
Aiya!

VardaToday at 4:09 PM
Aiya Elrond, Anarion, and Elladan!
Anarion, it might not change a lot but we'll see where Shirebound takes it!
At Bree, the hobbits would have more trust in Strider right away. What else can we think of?
Would it otherwise be the same?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:12 PM
He might've met them in the Shire early, and they'd have less trouble in the Old Forest, perhaps.

VardaToday at 4:14 PM
Hey, when you have Bombadil, what more do you need. ; )

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:14 PM
I bet they'd have gotten along.

VardaToday at 4:14 PM
Agreed. : )
I wonder how well they knew each other.
Gandalf was friends with both.
They were in the Shire area protecting.

ElladanToday at 4:15 PM
Here but going to the kitchen to heat up something to eat

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:15 PM
Maybe popped in for a visit now and then.

VardaToday at 4:15 PM
Maybe the Rangers had little to do on the Bombadil side of the Shire.

ElladanToday at 4:15 PM
swear I should have been a hobbit

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:16 PM
Hmm, not much threat coming from that side other than the occasional angry tree.

VardaToday at 4:16 PM
Good plan, Elladan. And maybe!
Orcs and others trying to cross into the Shire could be Willow lunch pretty quickly.

ArienValarToday at 4:17 PM
Aiya Elladan
nice to see you

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:17 PM
Aiya Elladan! How'd I miss that.

VardaToday at 4:32 PM

Tolkien!
Galadriel liked to make a distinction between the effects she made including tearing down Dol Guldur and the evil sorcery of the Enemy, not wanting to hear them both under the term "magic". With apologies to Galadriel, lumping the types under magic anyway, and considering this is a fantasy tale, what examples of magic or perhaps strangeness do we see?
.
Is this a purely mundane book with no magic?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:33 PM
Elvish rope

VardaToday at 4:33 PM
Good one!
Also feel free to pull examples from any of his books.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:34 PM
And cloaks that camouflage you whether the background is grey rocks, grey sand, grey grass or grey sky. ...Or wait, that was the parody book

VardaToday at 4:34 PM
Anyone can type. This is not a structured part with turns.

ArienValarToday at 4:34 PM
The Mirror of Galadriel

VardaToday at 4:34 PM
Haha, Galadriel's own magic!
The phial she gave to Frodo used against Shelob.

ArienValarToday at 4:35 PM
not to mention the magic of the three rings

VardaToday at 4:35 PM
True. And all those other rings.

ArienValarToday at 4:35 PM
to preserve , and heal and keep up the memory of that what was lost

VardaToday at 4:36 PM
There were even lesser rings not discussed. They should all have fan fic stories!
Aye, that's how the elvish rings were used. With a bit of fire too.
So we could perhaps add "protect".
Rings of the dwarves that took a bit of gold and multiplied it.
Thorin's problem was not having that first bit of gold.
or his father's ring.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:38 PM
I always wondered about that. Does it just make your treasury grow? Or veins of gold appear in your mountain? Or aid you in making favorable trading deals?
If you leave it on a coin, are there two the next morning?

VardaToday at 4:38 PM
Good question. I imagined it replicating.
Aye, that sort of thing.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:38 PM
That would be magic indeed.

VardaToday at 4:39 PM
Leave it on Smaug's hoard...

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:39 PM
Soon the mountain will overflow.

VardaToday at 4:39 PM
We could have been flooded in gold, so maybe there was some kind of restriction.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:40 PM
Maybe it was a common occurrence that a dragon would claim a ring, leave it in his hoard, and almost suffocate in his own gold one morning... at which point they'd decide to melt the darn thing.

VardaToday at 4:40 PM
Ah hah! That explains so much.
Why would a dragon that loves a hoard of treasure melt a dwarven ring? Now we know!

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:41 PM
There might even be dragon skeletons found in ever-multiplying hoards.

VardaToday at 4:41 PM
hehe

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:41 PM
Those who did not make it.

VardaToday at 4:42 PM
Elves might consider some things so normal that it isn't "magic".
Walking on snow, for instance. And who knows what else? Mud? Quicksand?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:42 PM
Walk on water, just to be with you ♪

VardaToday at 4:42 PM
: )
There's music in this channel!
And music is the start of most things in the stories. Such as Arda.
Music magic. Fights in song that bring up truths.
Banish wights.
The elves sang a lot. I wonder what kind of effect that had around them, maybe attributed to rings.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:44 PM
Make trees go to sleep.

VardaToday at 4:45 PM
Or talk to trees and waken them.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:45 PM
Depends on the song.

VardaToday at 4:45 PM
Aye!
Opposite there.

FladrifVToday at 4:45 PM
hoom boom heard his family being named

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:45 PM
A nice little lullaby or some hardrock elf metal.

VardaToday at 4:46 PM
Fladrif's hoom homs might be a form of music, like horns.
He affects the trees, the huorns.
and has a fine drink!

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:46 PM
Which also seems quite magical.
Or just very nutritious.

FladrifVToday at 4:46 PM
I always imagine it sounding like a lur

VardaToday at 4:46 PM
heh
lur?

FladrifVToday at 4:47 PM
old instrument from the vikings
sounds fabulous in a fjord

VardaToday at 4:47 PM
Cool, had to look it up.
Would love to hear it!

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:47 PM
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lur
Lur
A lur, also lure or lurr, is a long natural blowing horn without finger holes that is played by embouchure. Lurs can be straight or curved in various shapes. The purpose of the curves was to make long instruments easier to carry (e.g. for marching, like the modern sousaphone)...

VardaToday at 4:47 PM
a Scandinavian S-shaped bronze trumpet dating from the Bronze Age.
Reminds me of the Celtic version a bit.

FladrifVToday at 4:48 PM

VardaToday at 4:48 PM
the oldest metal musical instruments of Europe are the signal horns called lurs
Wow - quite different shapes.

FladrifVToday at 4:49 PM
that is the shape we normally see here in musea
my humble excuses for hijacking your moot

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:50 PM

ArienValarToday at 4:52 PM
dear Ent

VardaToday at 4:52 PM
In the comments, it says: the bronze ones are believed to have been for ritual use, whilst the wooden ones (which were shorter and lighter, thereby more portable) were used for signaling
Don't know how accurate that is, but interesting.
We have heard the music of the Ents!
How magical is it to have walking trees that can speak with you and shepherd others?
I'd put that high up the list.

FladrifVToday at 4:54 PM
luckily noone sees us ever blush

VardaToday at 4:54 PM
Hidden under bark. : )

ArienValarToday at 4:54 PM

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:56 PM

ElladanToday at 4:56 PM
Not evergreens

VardaToday at 4:56 PM
hehe

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:56 PM
True

ElladanToday at 4:56 PM
or palm trees

FladrifVToday at 4:57 PM
and not to forget fern trees

ElladanToday at 4:57 PM
isnt a fern, a fern?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:57 PM
They know no shame or shyness.

ElladanToday at 4:57 PM
lol

VardaToday at 4:57 PM
It's like seeing a hamster and a Kodiak bear?

ElladanToday at 4:58 PM
that would be a teddy bear hamster

FladrifVToday at 4:58 PM
slightly taller than a normal fern

VardaToday at 4:58 PM
I used to raise those. : )
the hamsters that is.
Good picture!

ElladanToday at 4:58 PM
that's awesome. I love tropics

FladrifVToday at 4:58 PM
endemic to NZ

VardaToday at 4:58 PM
Another reason to visit!

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 4:59 PM
Yess, I'd say that's a fern"tree" indeed.

FladrifVToday at 4:59 PM
silver ferns guide your path
by flipping them to their silver side

VardaToday at 4:59 PM
They stay?

FladrifVToday at 5:00 PM
after been disconnected from their rightful bearer yes

VardaToday at 5:00 PM
ah makes sense. Like breaking over a tiny sapling to point a change in direction.
So we have active trees.
Speaking with stones.
I wonder if the ent version of that might be those storm giants?

FladrifVToday at 5:02 PM
things mostly get a bit rocky when that happens

VardaToday at 5:02 PM
hehe
Sleeping while walking, but somewhat aware. So normal it couldn't be magic, right? Elves.
Sending light into the sky to take down a Nazgul on a flying beast to save Faramir and his soldiers.
Or just being a wraith! Morgul sorcery there.
Sending one's "power" into others and into objects such as a ring or the planet.
Morgoth's Ring, aka Arda.
Sending light into the sky to take down a Nazgul on a flying beast to save Faramir and his soldiers.

ArienValarToday at 5:05 PM
The Pukelman Stone ? Just an ancient mortal who had learned to sit still like a stone or an animated stone?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:05 PM
Now that's spooky  magic.

ElladanToday at 5:05 PM
Alright guys, I gotta get going. Good to see you, even though it was brief.

VardaToday at 5:05 PM
So, when the stones have models to admire? We just thought they weren't awake.

Changing a flat earth into a round one.
Taking a ship along the "straight path" to Valinor.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:06 PM
Well, if you're going to count stuff Illuvatar did...

VardaToday at 5:07 PM
So, we see a few odd things happening. Not just mundane.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:07 PM
Creation itself

VardaToday at 5:07 PM
I was going after the ship taking the straight path, but aye, why not!
That is the greatest magic, right there.
Can't top that!

the gavel pops off the shelf and attempts  a bow to the hammerpad
the hammerpad tries to bow back, not very well
then showers of light cover them and both bow elegantly, with a thunk sound as they lightly collide
top

After-meeting!

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:09 PM
Well you did state changing the world from flat to round

VardaToday at 5:09 PM
Free chat about anything.
Yes, yes I did. ; )

VardaToday at 5:18 PM
Ok, must go cook.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:18 PM
Enjoy?

VardaToday at 5:18 PM
*follows Elladan to the kitchen with Elrond's hog meat.
Cooking is fun. : )  A different kind of fun than here is all.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:19 PM
I don't have the patience for it.

VardaToday at 5:19 PM
I get hungry, and also don't want my family hungry.
Try faster type cooking or stuff that goes in the oven?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:19 PM
Good point, but it depends on what you're making
Yep, microwave stuff works.

VardaToday at 5:20 PM
hehe - it can!

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:20 PM
Or stuff that I can just leave in a pot for 15 minutes without having to look at it.

VardaToday at 5:20 PM
And leftover turkey with dressing!

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:21 PM
What would be a good name for a redfurred pandaren blood deathknight?
Must start with my traditional prefix of Cal- , but I can always slap that in front of the actual name.

ArienValarToday at 5:24 PM
Calfurion :open_mouth:

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:25 PM
If she was a druid
doesn't really work for a dk.
I'm thinking along the lines of Calsanguia, but something more Chinese-inspired would be nice.
Calsangria for the drink

VardaToday at 5:29 PM
Namarie for now. Calnamarie? ; )

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:30 PM
Namarie

ArienValarToday at 5:33 PM
Cal SangWu ?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:33 PM
Interesting.

ArienValarToday at 5:34 PM
:O)

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:36 PM
Calshanguia?
Calsangwu's not bad though.
..Calshangrila?

ArienValarToday at 5:42 PM
Calshangli for a lady is it?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:42 PM
I tend to affix all my female chars with -a, but it might be worth an exception.
With an -i, we've always got Caljiangshi, after the chinese vampire.

ArienValarToday at 5:43 PM
well as far as i know the syllable Wu after a name is associated with males and Li with females at least as stereotype

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:44 PM
Hmm, interesting.

ArienValarToday at 5:44 PM
bbut i llike that actaully Caljangshi

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 5:44 PM
The name Li means Pretty, Powerful and is of Chinese origin. Li is name that's been used by parents who are considering unisex or non-gendered baby names--baby names that can be used for any gender.

If used for a female, this name means "pretty." For a male, "powerful."
Ideally I'd find a combination of Jiangshi and Sangria
Calsjiangshria might be a bit over the top.
It'd certainly be unique, though.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 6:08 PM
Also too long, apparently the cap is 12 letters
Anyway, gonna play some Storm, and then do my gaming report.

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 6:40 PM
Personal gaming report!
For flashgames I've had quite a few choices this week, but I'll give you 3 short-ish medium skilled-ish puzzle games that were newly badged on Kongregate this week.

ArienValarToday at 6:42 PM
Callshangria!
Caljiangshia?

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 6:42 PM
Close  I settled on Calshiangria for now, with shi (as in Jiangshi) being chinese for corpse.
Might change my mind, but it looks okay.

ArienValarToday at 6:43 PM
looks great

Ar-Pharazon-VToday at 6:43 PM
Thanks for helping me with suggestions

ArienValarToday at 6:43 PM
happy to do

Flashgames!
https://www.kongregate.com/games/Alienplay/spin is the first game for this week! A balance puzzler, where you guide a ball to the flag in each level by rotating platformers and later on activating springs. Some puzzling and timing required, but the most fun can be had by just launching the ball with a large swing and hoping it lands in the right place

https://www.kongregate.com/games/ValettusGD/the-chamber is a top-view puzzle game where you move your robot character through a level, finding the varying solutions to each level. Lights to hit, blocks to move, enemies to shoot - or not! - and different solutions in each level.

A bit of thinking and improvisation is necessary, but it's not that difficult to figure each one out. And if you have trouble, you can ask for hints.
Make sure to start with the tutorial for instructions!
And if you fail, you get a level-specific hint as well, relating to why you failed

And https://www.kongregate.com/games/toweld/four-color-theorem-coloring-puzzle-game for the last game! This one is rather more relaxed, with logical thinking. The idea is that with any configuration on a 2d map, you'll only ever need 4 colors max to color the areas so that no same-colored areas touch.

Four Color Theorem - Coloring Puzzle Game
In mathematics, the four color theorem, or the four color map theorem, states that, given any separation of a plane into contiguous regions, producing a figure...
Using this concept, color all the squares in the map; you've got 5 colors, but if you manage it with 4 (or lower in some maps) you'll get a star. So get all the stars!
There are daily randomly generated levels as well, proving the concept correct with no exceptions
I really enjoyed all 3 games this week, and especially the third one gives random new content every day. So try it out and have fun!

Blizzard gaming:
Heroes of the Storm:
Nothing much new. Couple of rare banners from lootchests. Still at level 379, and brawl with 3 familiar heroes. Still lost 2 out of 3 though, but I can't carry everything
Starcraft:
Something new there! With Black Friday sales going on at Blizzard, I decided to buy Starcraft Cartooned! It's a modification of Starcraft Remastered in the style of the Carbot Starcrafts videos, which I've really gotten into recently, and at 25% discount I decided to buy it.

It changes the map textures, buildings, units, ending screens, campaign briefings, main menu, and gives a nice cinema context to the cutscenes. Basically the entire game except the options buttons and audio.
If you're a fan of Carbot, or just like to see Starcraft imagined in a cute artstyle, I really recommend it; I made a start at replaying the campaign in the Cartooned style and cleared a couple of missions.
If you'd like to see previews, you should be able to find it in your region's version of the blizzard shop, but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8bC2bZ0JSs gives a trailer, with a slightly modified broodwar intro followed by preview scenes

Hearthstone:
Still on the edge of level 60 for most classes! I can't even see the gap anymore for most classes, and the rest is 10% or less off. Next week pretty much guaranteed to get a bunch more level 60s, if not all of them.
Brawl is an old common one, the Crossroads, simply choose a class and get a random deck. It's simple and random but also quick and fun
WoW:
A few more attempts at mythic Palace, even had up to 20 people! Got no further on the first boss though. I believe new strategies are being developed, but we're taking a break from it for now, and instead organizing some alt-raids in this earlier raid-instances, which I'll be joining on my main anyway.
We did, however, clear heroic Palace in one night for the first time, which is an interesting milestone, as it gives us time for other things (such as the altraids) on both other raidnights.
Got one new leathery item from the green dragons, only 4 more appearances to unlock with the characters I'm sending in. Would still like the staff though.
We got an unexpected new brawl, which usually skips a week... arathi basin vs advanced AI, which is always fun! It was a bit buggy though, which is why they replaced it after a day and will try it again next week. Since I already did it on wednesday, though, I get to go there two weeks in a row

Weekly this week is mythic dungeons, for which I did my weekly Kings Rest and Freehold, as well as Tol Dagor and Siege of Boralus, which are rather confined and linear. Makes for relaxed progression.
Reason for doing Freehold is a chance at a mount from the last boss, and while I've not had any luck with that, an in-game friend who sometimes joins me in there did get it! I hope mine won't take too much longer
Also been trying to get a group together for a Kings Rest achievement that gives a pet, but no luck yet. Hopefully in the next few days!
And finally a new toy from Expeditions! Got enough dubloons there to buy a Hand Anchor, which is a toy replacing your weapon with an anchor for 10 minutes. Doesn't show much for my shapeshifting druid, but could be fun on alts.
And I think that's my report for the week!
