There was a Diablo 1 thing, what was it...
Yes. Website to play Diablo 1 on the browser. Shareware version, but if you own the game (such as the recently released GoG version) you can drop the mpq on the website and play the whole game.

ElrondYesterday at 4:32 PM
SWTOR has some stuff up on the PTR. There's been some datamining, and if you participate doing certain things leading up to the expansion in September, you will end up with what looks like a log mount. So, if you want this log to ride around on, there you go.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:33 PM
Oh, speaking of PTR.
WoW patch 8.2.5 is starting to go up, with datamining in progress. Includes new models for Wrathion, Calia as well as the bee mount coming at last
should be good!

VardaYesterday at 4:34 PM
Calia? Sounds sort of similar to some Calaron guy.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:35 PM
It was not intended! Calia's been around in lore for a while, but I believe not as long ago as I created Calaron, and she's only come back in-game during the previous expansion

VardaYesterday at 4:35 PM
Just lucky!

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:35 PM

VardaYesterday at 4:38 PM

If you think of something later, we have this After-meeting thing!
On to
top

Tolkien!
Fangorn gave us a topic. : )
Cut down to the short, non-Entish version: What was the importance of marriage in Tolkien's works?
It did affect the plot!
All of you here have read the LotR. You know that marriage was important as a motivator and even as eventual unexpected joy after the quest.
When did we see it as a motivator?

ArienValarYesterday at 4:43 PM
Arwen's marriage to Aragorn .. well the future of the marriage between the two

VardaYesterday at 4:44 PM
Right. Aragorn was motivated to become High King to prove his worth so that he could marry Arwen.

ArienValarYesterday at 4:44 PM
Aragorn new that he couldn't do that before his task , dealing with the ring and Sauron, was done and dusted]

AnarionYesterday at 4:44 PM
As far as tolkein goes, I'm really only aware of two marriages that were of significant importance, but I'm sure there were others. Those two were Arwen and Aragorn (of course), and Beren and Luthien
Surely there was another, however?
There were other marriages, such as Sam's marriage

VardaYesterday at 4:45 PM
Right! Those were the main motivator marriages that I had in mind.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:45 PM
Sam's marriage as a motivator for what? Surviving Mount Doom? Not going with Frodo on the ship (yet)?

AnarionYesterday at 4:46 PM
The significance of Sam's marriage I think had nothing to do with being a motivator.
"And so it was settled. Sam Gamgee married Rose Cotton in the spring of 1420 (which was also famous for its weddings), and they came and lived at Bag End. And if Sam thought himself lucky, Frodo knew that he was more lucky himself; for there was not a hobbit in the Shire that was looked after with such care. When the labours or repair had all been planned and set going he took to a quiet life, writing a good deal and going through all his notes. "
VardaYesterday at 4:46 PM
Sam had a reason to live, to want to make it back to the Shire.
And yes, it had significance beyond a motivator.
Well said.
Aragorn's marriage also had significance beyond being a motivator.

AnarionYesterday at 4:50 PM
It would seem that Sam's marriage would have happened at least 5 months after the destruction of the ring, possibly over a year

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:50 PM
Uniting the lines of elves and men once more, and giving birth to a line of decently long-lived kings, is what comes to mind

AnarionYesterday at 4:51 PM
Oh wait, the ring was destroyed towards the end of march
so that would be basically a year

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:51 PM
25th

AnarionYesterday at 4:52 PM
I actually don't think that Sam was thinking of Rosie while on his journey at all
until perhaps when he starts reminsicing in Mordor

VardaYesterday at 4:52 PM
He mentioned her a few times in Mordor, aye.

AnarionYesterday at 4:53 PM
I think narratively that was about the world being at peace and life continuing for the hobbits
Similarly, Eowyn and Faramir got married
after the war of the ring

VardaYesterday at 4:54 PM
Aye.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:54 PM
Good reinforcement of an old alliance

AnarionYesterday at 4:54 PM
Yep!
Any other marrages that take place during the main books?

VardaYesterday at 4:55 PM
Also rewards, happy endings, right on the alliances, continued help for various areas.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 4:55 PM
Eomer also got wed, didn't he?

VardaYesterday at 4:55 PM
aye, he did. Lothiriel I think?

AnarionYesterday at 4:56 PM
From the wiki:
"Éomer had met Lothíriel, daughter of Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth during his stay in Gondor"
nice going

VardaYesterday at 4:56 PM
Now if I can figure how to type in diacriticals on purpose... : )

AnarionYesterday at 4:56 PM
I didn't there, ctrl-c -> ctrl-v
I think otherwise my name would contain one
yeah, the second a

VardaYesterday at 4:57 PM
Aye, but I can't do that with my memory, hah. ctrl paste would give you a big mess out of this noggin.
Merry and Pippin also married but after the main part of the books.
The marriages tended to be "off-camera", continuation of life rather than dying.
A hopeful message.
JRRT had a lot of comments overt and covert about hope.

AnarionYesterday at 4:59 PM
Yeah, and partially just the characters being regular people, many of whom returned to some semblance of normalcy after the crisis

VardaYesterday at 4:59 PM
Right! They got on with their lives, a reward. It didn't have to be marriage. Frodo wrote in the Red Book for instance.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:00 PM
Related, I also believe there were a lot of new hobbits born the following year

AnarionYesterday at 5:00 PM
;)

VardaYesterday at 5:00 PM
Baby boom after a war. : )

AnarionYesterday at 5:00 PM
So, what of Arwen and Aragorn, being corrupted by the movies I remember basically nothing about all of that

VardaYesterday at 5:00 PM
May have been a baby boom for elves after returning from the Siege of Barad-dur.

AnarionYesterday at 5:01 PM
I know a bit of Beren and Luthein from the Lay and Silmarilion, but basically nothing of those two

VardaYesterday at 5:01 PM
In the movies, Aragorn was a reluctant hero. In the books, he was highly motivated to prove himself to Elrond who said he could not marry him unless he became High King.
The appendix has most of the story of Aragorn and Arwen, rather than the main book.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:01 PM
Is that a better or worse task than obtaining a Silmaril?

AnarionYesterday at 5:02 PM
I mean, that would make him a reluctant hero after a fashion. Being unmotivated by saving the world is kinda interesting for a person like Aragorn

VardaYesterday at 5:02 PM
Might not involve as much kin-slaying if lucky?

AnarionYesterday at 5:02 PM
^

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:02 PM
Quite a few humans died on both sides in that war, though.

VardaYesterday at 5:03 PM
Aragorn was heading for Minas Tirith, not Mt. Doom, at first. Then he started thinking he would have to go to Mt. Doom, then not.
War is bad about that. But the war meant that Sauron didn't cover the world in darkness for generations, as the Ainur warned could have happened.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:04 PM
Yes, but it was still a sort of kinslaying.

AnarionYesterday at 5:06 PM
I feel that Beren's task in gaining a Silmaril had actually very little to do with the overall plot from his point of view
He was given the task of a hero and he performed it

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:06 PM
It did come as a bit of a surprise.

VardaYesterday at 5:06 PM
And why did Beren do that task?

AnarionYesterday at 5:08 PM
He met a mean dad

VardaYesterday at 5:08 PM
lol

AnarionYesterday at 5:08 PM
Not that he was dissapointed in his task it seems

ArienValarYesterday at 5:08 PM
Turgon wanted the Silmaril as bride gift for Luthien

AnarionYesterday at 5:08 PM
From wiki:
"During this time, he [Beren] hunted nothing and ate no meat and only killed the creatures of Morgoth that roamed the country. He learned not to fear death only captivity and bondage; however, things began to grow more difficult for him in Dorthonion for Morgoth put an even greater price on his head and he was forced from the land of his birth by Sauron and Draugluin."
ArienValarYesterday at 5:08 PM
erh Thingol

AnarionYesterday at 5:08 PM
-- that's how he found Luthien

VardaYesterday at 5:09 PM
Right Arien. Thus marriage as motivator. It's a basic thing in living creatures.

AnarionYesterday at 5:10 PM
at least monogomous ones

VardaYesterday at 5:10 PM
JRRT may have been something of a romantic. I'm not complaining.
We call it marriage in these stories at least. : )
JRRT was very happy seeing Edith dance in the woods. So Beren and Aragorn both saw their eventual wives dance in the woods. : )

AnarionYesterday at 5:11 PM
"May have been" I don't think there is any doubt, he had the name of Luthien written on his wife's tombstone IIRC. And then there's the Lay of Luthien

VardaYesterday at 5:11 PM
Correct. Beren on his own tombstone, Luthien on Edith's.

AnarionYesterday at 5:13 PM
I find marriage just an extremely weird motivator in general. I mean, part of that is I'm more used to stories more explicitly about justice, so having a main character seek justice as a side thing to his real goal would seem...not so great

VardaYesterday at 5:14 PM
He can do both.

AnarionYesterday at 5:14 PM
But there is no doubt in the strength of that as a motivator

VardaYesterday at 5:14 PM
I am not saying it was the only motivator. Most things are done due to more than one.

AnarionYesterday at 5:15 PM
Hrm, Most things are done due to more than one motivator. I suppose. That doesn't exactly speak well of humanity I feel.

VardaYesterday at 5:15 PM
One may be just an extra push to help past the mass of obstacles.

AnarionYesterday at 5:17 PM
Indeed. But I feel much better about the push when that push comes from behind rather than a future reward. Perhaps this was why the movies tried to employ Arwen that way
Not that I much liked that idea for their relationship given the practicality issue there.

VardaYesterday at 5:17 PM
The push and the pull.
The marriage part might have been missing completely and Aragorn would still have aided Frodo. It might have been a different way, no side trip planned to Minas Tirith, for instance?

AnarionYesterday at 5:19 PM
Perhaps, but would he have ended up in Rivendell for the trip at all were that the case?

VardaYesterday at 5:20 PM
He was raised by Elrond. He met with his Rangers often at Rivendell.

AnarionYesterday at 5:20 PM
It depends on how much Gandalf had talked to him perhaps

VardaYesterday at 5:20 PM
Gandalf is a great guy for helping timing. : )

AnarionYesterday at 5:21 PM
Yeah, it is entirely possible that chain of events could have happened without Arwen

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:21 PM
Also, people who were meant to join in Rivendell did so without extra motivators

VardaYesterday at 5:21 PM
And yet, a kingdom needs an heir.
JRRT was a monarchist, easy to forget. Not just his story-telling there.

AnarionYesterday at 5:22 PM
Behold, marriage can end up being such a practical decision, though in this case more for Elrond than the two getting married I guess

VardaYesterday at 5:22 PM
Jolly old England.
Elrond did not want the marriage. He wanted Arwen to go to Valinor with him.

AnarionYesterday at 5:23 PM
At the same time, he also didn't want Gondor to end

VardaYesterday at 5:23 PM
Aye. His twin brother's legacy.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:23 PM
Maybe he would've been happier if Aragorn had married Eowyn instead?

VardaYesterday at 5:24 PM
Likely.

AnarionYesterday at 5:24 PM
Yep

VardaYesterday at 5:24 PM
That would have made quite a different alliance and shortened the lifespan of the Kings early.

AnarionYesterday at 5:25 PM
I'm not sure the lifespan of the kings was a big deal to Elrond

VardaYesterday at 5:25 PM
Good question.

AnarionYesterday at 5:26 PM
How would it have made the alliance different? Less people at the black gate?

VardaYesterday at 5:26 PM
It did help with a friendliness to the elves by men for a longer time.

AnarionYesterday at 5:26 PM
fair

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:26 PM
Those elves that remained, anyway. And I think Legolas would've come to Ithilien anyway

VardaYesterday at 5:27 PM
Elrond might have been ok with the Eowyn thing. But history needed Arwen.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 5:27 PM
Narrativium?

VardaYesterday at 5:27 PM
Aye to Legolas and the elves he brought with him for the Ithilien colony.

AnarionYesterday at 5:27 PM
Indeed, it was a brighter future as a result of that union

VardaYesterday at 5:28 PM
That was a good discussion! We went overtime by half an hour. : )

AnarionYesterday at 5:29 PM
Haha, easy to do

VardaYesterday at 5:30 PM
Agreed, the needs of the world were the main drivers saying what to do. Marriage helped give a future, hope, rewards for those efforts.
Does that sum up what we came up with?

AnarionYesterday at 5:30 PM
sure

VardaYesterday at 5:31 PM
The hammer comes zooming out of the shelf on ice skates over the shiny surface of a Valinorean table

Shining white mountain. Sounds like ice and snow.

VardaYesterday at 6:12 PM
I like the post.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 6:13 PM
I've been a bit tired for post-writing lately, but mine should really write itself... after all, I have a personal stake in this.

VardaYesterday at 6:13 PM
good motivation
for Frali.
Good point about the personal stake. We all need to show that as well as the overall mission stake.

Ar-Pharazon-VYesterday at 6:15 PM
So mine might be even more to the point than Frali's and Fainan's

Personal gaming report!

Flashgaming:
https://www.kongregate.com/games/randomnine/cardinal-quest-2 is the first game! A roguelike dungeon crawler, quite tough, though I might have been unlucky or just unskilled  Make your way through levels, defeating monsters, leveling and upgrading your adventurer, seeing how far you get through the story.

    Cardinal Quest 2

It doesn't really get easier (although you might get more practiced) but you do earn morale each run through kills and achievements, which you can then use to unlock new classes to play and new starting skills to use. Eventually you'll find something you can beat the game with, probably

https://www.kongregate.com/games/okaybmd/glean is the second game! And it's a series I do love. I've played both this and its sequel to completion, and had great fun doing it, though it took a while

Travel between planets, drilling and mining and crafting and upgrading everything, finding artifact pieces to advance the story. Great graphics and music, too!
If you like it, go for Glean 2 as well, with more types of planet and things to do!

Like most children, I had dreams of building a logistics-based empire. Now I can live that fantasy through this game, Logistics Inc. You can too!

Blizzard gaming:
Heroes of the Storm:
3 levels gained, up to 357 now. Got Lucio to level 12 as I worked on the healing quest for event, and got stuck with some heroes I wasn't very good at in the brawl, which got Cassia to level 3 and Anduin to level 2 in the first match I ever played with him. Lost all 3 brawls, but wasn't too annoyed with the heroes I used. They're okay with some practice.
Event quests complete, mecha tyrael skin unlocked  After completing all the quests, I repeated the 4-win quest a few times, as it's the easier to get (vs AI) and obviously only takes 4 games per quest, while the others can take much longer. Repeating the quests gives you another loot chest each.
It's almost over now though; in fact the timer right now says "less than 1 day", so I'll only be able to get one more of those.
Hearthstone:
Most classes are nearing 59 now, though a few are still near halfway. Brawl is neat, the Karazhan chess game, but with 6 cards of your choice added to the deck to interact with the chess pieces. I got a somewhat easy win with a rogue deck, applying poison to the chess pieces for instant kills and cards to bounce the poison-appliers back to the hand for future use. Works very well!
WoW:
Raiding still going well! Making some progress on heroic difficulty, bringing down the second and third boss. Also poked normal a bit more, up to the 7th boss, getting enough boss items to upgrade my tank essence to rank 2. It's a pretty good upgrade
As a result of last week's event, I completed the conquest bar for the first time this season and got rank 1 of the pvp essence, Conflict and Strife. Getting the higher ranks will take a lot of work doing rated arenas and/or battlegrounds, which is something I usually don't bother with, so we'll see if I upgrade this one further.
Weekly this week is world quests, which went quite smoothly, including doing more new world quests in Zandalar. In doing so, I managed to get the achievement for killing all the rares in Vol'dun. Usually not that difficult since you can just look them all up in one go, but as I only did them as they came up as world quests, it's a bit more of an achievement indeed.
I did some more stuff in Zandalar as well, getting the achievement for killing 20 pirates in southern Vol 'dun while accompanied by a bird that only joins you when you acquire all 3 buffs from the area. And after that I poked some big elite dinosaurs in Zuldazar for another achievement, but there are still 2 missing from that one which are seldom up and interchangeable in their spawns, so that'll take some daily checking to get.
Oh, and I got one more essence rank from a +8 mythic, rank 2 of the dps essence there. Only one more rank 2 to go, with the rank 3s coming from mats from the weekly chest. So while I will be needing to do more instances, I'll be less bound to a certain keystone number.
Also, 3 new pets, yay! First one is the Thistleleaf Adventurer, the pet from Dreamweaver emissary reward bags in the previous expansion's content. Other than doing the rare Dreamweaver emissary with only 3% drop chance each, I was also checking the auction  house daily for an uncaged version of the pet, also looking for a good price. And when one of them came up for about 80k, I went for it. So now I'm done with all Legion emissary work, and can abandon the old expansion for a while
Second and third came from the Eternal Palace raid,  a piranha-like fish and a small octopus. Very cute!
I also paid a visit to the heroic version of the Stromgarde warfront this weekend, and for once it wasn't bugged; we  slowly fought our way through and brought down the boss in the proper way, getting the heroic warfront achievement in the process, and the first of 3 commanders defeated for another achievement. Will need to make sure to get the other two in the next couple of cycles
And finally, I put in a pre-order for those 3 books I mentioned last week. They'll be mine!
And that's the report for the week!
