I sit beside the fire and think
of all that I have seen
of meadow-flowers and butterflies
in summers that have been;

Fellowship Chapter 1:
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

But the courage that had been awakened in him was now too strong: he could not leave his friends so easily.
He wavered, groping in his pocket, and then fought with himself again; and as he did so the arm crept nearer.
Suddenly resolve hardened in him, and he seized a short sword that lay beside him, and kneeling he stooped low over the bodies of his companions.
With what strength he had he hewed at the crawling arm near the wrist, and the hand broke off;
but at the same moment the sword splintered up to the hilt.
There was a shriek and the light vanished. In the dark there was a snarling noise.

There was a faint stir in the leaves, and a cock crowed far away.
The cold hour before dawn was passing.
The figure by the door moved.
In the dark without moon or stars a drawn blade gleamed, as if a chill light had been unsheathed.
There was a blow, soft but heavy, and the door shuddered.
"Open in the name of Mordor!" said a voice thin and menacing.
At a second blow the door yielded and fell back, with timbers burst and lock broken.
The black figures passed swiftly in.

At that moment, among the trees nearby, a horn rang out.
It rent the night like fire on a hill-top.
AWAKE! FEAR! FIRE! FOES! AWAKE!
Fatty Bolger had not been idle.

"Did you meet the beater of the drums?"
"I do not know," answered Gandalf. "But I found myself suddenly faced by something that I have not met before..."

"You cannot pass," he said. The orcs stood still, and a dead silence fell.
"I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. You cannot pass.
"The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udun. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass."
The Balrog made no answer.
The fire in it seemed to die, but the darkness grew.

It stepped forward slowly on to the bridge, and suddenly
it drew itself up to a great height and its wings were spread from wall to wall;
but still Gandalf could be seen, glimmering in the gloom...
