Anyone else here being very quiet?
I'm leaving LotRO since it's not letting the messages come through right. Suspect I need to mess with the resolution later.
Any membership news you'd like to mention?
Eonwe doesn't think he'll be able to make it, but gave us Gaming news.
He tends to be at work this time of day.

Web:
Still need to download the entire Valar Guild site to this computer, then hope to get back to doing some work for the Tolkien Site.
Please feel free to keep sending articles etc in, as they will be going up soon if you do.
We especially could use more dwarf articles right now, characters, places, events, objects.
Those will be linking into the page for the Dwarven Kings and the events of their times, that also link to the aforementioned goodies.
Eonwe is taking events with dates from us and loading the info with the links on the proper date for the Games Site. Feel free to send news to him.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
You need to download the entire site to work on it?
Varda - 02/04/2018
I need to download the entire site as the computer was wiped clean. I don't have to download the Games Site, but tend to as a backup for Eonwe.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
I just thought you fiddled online on something server-stored or something.
(have little clue how programming a website works)
Varda - 02/04/2018
It is on the server. But I have to put it on the server.
I take the page on my computer and fiddle with it, then upload it to the server.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
aah
Varda - 02/04/2018
Usually I make the tweaks on my computer and toss that little bit up there, but right now there's nothing on my computer.
I don't have to upload the whole site, just whatever page has been tweaked.
It will happen. Waiting first to see if this computer will go ahead and "burn to the ground" from use.
If it does fine, then business as usual.
It might be fixed now, we hope.
But not even the repair guys are sure.

Gaming:
The Games Site report is now scattered across the days in a more normal fashion of websites, with the info relevant to that day in that spot, instead of all on Sunday.

Tolkien:
Does anyone else have a question, Tolkien Moment, or other suggestion? I have a topic available for after that.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Well, not sure if it helps...
Varda - 02/04/2018
Hobbits: what were they like, that the Wise and the Enemy (and Saruman was both!) overlooked them, but they became central to the destruction of Sauron?

Go ahead, Phar
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
but after getting the Beren and Luthien book I had to rearrange my Tolkien shelf a bit
Varda - 02/04/2018
Find something hidden in there?
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
and ended up leafing through, among others, the Letters and the Lost Tales.
Varda - 02/04/2018
Good stuff!
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Some interesting stuff in there I had not noticed or read before
Not sure I've got anything particular in mind, though, except that even Tolkien himself wasn't sure of which two towers were the Two Towers
Varda - 02/04/2018
hah
(Folks, feel free to type if you have something to say at the same time in Tolkien chat. We can sort it out.
I've heard two different pairs of Towers. Which ones can our group come up with?
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Orthanc and Cirith Ungol was one of Tolkien's suggestions.
Though Cirith Ungol didn't even really feature in the novel.
(not to mention the movie)
Varda - 02/04/2018
Shelob may have thought it did, and Frodo.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Well, the tower next to it, anyway.
ArienV - 02/04/2018
Minas Anor and Minas Ithil is the other pair i guess
or Minas Tiritrh and Minas Morgul ~
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Yes, probably. Though Anor/Tirith was not in that particular book either, I think?
I considered the opposition of Orthanc and Helm's Deep / Hornburg at one point.
Varda - 02/04/2018
Those are good ones.
Could be Minas Tirith and Barad-dur
Orthanc and Barad-dur

ArienV - 02/04/2018
uhu
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Ah,  yes, that too.
Varda - 02/04/2018
That it's so unclear is interesting. It was not originally a title planned by JRRT, as it was all one book.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
And his volumes III and IV really  had little in common for a title
ArienV - 02/04/2018
have you seen the one volume edition ~?
1054 pages ..
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Hmm, I think I saw it in a store once.
Varda - 02/04/2018
Yes. The words were smashed to close to the spine for comfortable reading.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Very big

Varda - 02/04/2018
Now that is a thought. What was in common between the two stories going on in the Two Towers?
We have Gandalf with his dual nature, since he comes back from the Grey as the White.
We have Gollum with his dual nature of Slinker and Stinker (Smeagol and Gollum).
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Quite different dual natures, but sure
Varda - 02/04/2018
Two new fighting forces: Riders of Rohan in one, Rangers of Ithilien in the other.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
New allies made, check.
ArienV - 02/04/2018
The Valar on one Side and Sauron  (and Morgoth) and his lot
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Both featured 2 hobbits on their own trying to convince a foreign side that they're allies, whether it's the rangers or ents
Varda - 02/04/2018
Choices, maybe? Theoden is torn between two sides. Saruman talks to the group, plus the Palantir that Pippin should not have picked up. On the other side: the choices of Master Samwise. (Reaching here.)
Good one, Phar
That's a good spot to switch to our other topic.

What kind of ammo did the hobbits have to show they were on the side of those folks?
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
New title for third and fourth volumes: Force of Hobbit.
Varda - 02/04/2018
There you go.
ArienV - 02/04/2018
hmm  they prove they are more restistant to corruptive powers then other races
at least where a ring is concerned
Varda - 02/04/2018
What can they tell the Ents or the Southern Rangers, though?
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Charismati and honesty were their weapons there, I suppose?
*Charisma
Varda - 02/04/2018
How did they convince the Rangers?
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
I don't recall, actually... probably not by being chased by a Nazgul in a ruined city!
Varda - 02/04/2018
Aye, not the movie.
The Rangers captured them and hauled them off. They were strangers in the territory of the Rangers, in wartime.
But they spoke of Boromir, brother of the Ranger leader.
Faramir did figure out they had the One Ring, and agreed that it should be destroyed. So he kept the secret and helped them on their way.
What about the Ents?
Treebeard for a second thought they were little orcs.
That was a very dangerous second.
Then he heard their voices.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Not orc voices!
Varda - 02/04/2018
Aye, far from.
They became an interesting puzzle. Where could he fit the Halflings in the list of living things? So he spoke with them.
They gave him news. It was not assumed to be true, but had to be checked.
ArienV - 02/04/2018
nice little voices!
they reminded him of Entings and Entwives
Varda - 02/04/2018
Aye. His parental instincts kicked in.
ArienV - 02/04/2018
and  when fangorn looked .he didnt know the m . he hadnt seen any of their kind before
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Hobbit relations with nature helped.
Varda - 02/04/2018
The entwives would have liked them, for their farming and gardening.
ArienV - 02/04/2018
and would have liiked their country
Varda - 02/04/2018
And I still wish the Hobbits had mentioned the moving trees in the Shire

ArienV - 02/04/2018
maybe an Entiwive or an Enting looking for other Ents ?
Varda - 02/04/2018
The ones in the Old Forest may have been Huorns, or waking trees under the influence of Old Man Willow. But there seemed to be others outside of there?
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
What if they mentioned the Old Forest?
Varda - 02/04/2018
Seems as if an Ent might have gone to check it out.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
I wonder what Fangorn's thoughts would've been on Old Man Willow.
Varda - 02/04/2018
I wonder if Tom would have liked that or considered it an invasion of his domain?
Fangorn would probably have made that bad tree behave.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
I think Fangorn and Bombadil would've gotten along great
Varda - 02/04/2018
Aye to that
ArienV - 02/04/2018
amusing thoought ^^
an encounter between the two
or a meeting we should say
Varda - 02/04/2018
Back to hobbits.  What about them made them go suddenly from the least to most important in the world?
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Something about a Ring...
Varda - 02/04/2018
Sauron-(Valar) says it was situational. He said a lot more, but since he's not in here, would you like to run with that?
He was walking by and saw the discussion.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Situational?
Varda - 02/04/2018
All of a sudden the situation caused something about hobbits to become important.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Well. Yes. The Ring, and Sauron starting to look for it.
And Bilbo finding it. And keeping it in the Shire.
Varda - 02/04/2018
Why not some other race?
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
And passing it along to another Hobbit.
Varda - 02/04/2018
That's one. Bilbo had it in the Shire, where no one would look because who would hide it there?
ArienV - 02/04/2018
well passed on through Gollum who was of Hobbit kind troo
too
Varda - 02/04/2018
That's true too. Deagol and Smeagol/Gollum, both Hobbits. Smeagol killed for the Ring and used it to sneak around and find secrets he could bribe/extort with, but it was all among hobbits. Then he was banished and finally hid where he thought the deepest secret was, in the root of a mountain.
And stayed hidden for long years.
Until another hobbit came by.
Took a while. If a different hobbit had come earlier, it might have gone out earlier?
Then it went to another land full of hobbits.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Where Bilbo was not stranger to using it for sneaky business, though with better intentions.
Like avoiding neighbours.
Varda - 02/04/2018
Aye, he used it in defense, not to harm.
Why would it be best for the hobbits to have the Ring to hide it?
What was different about them?
ArienV - 02/04/2018
between Bilbo and Gollum?
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Well, they were a peaceful race, not caring much about war and adventure (for the most part) but they were good at hiding stuff.
Varda - 02/04/2018
True. They didn't care about power the way others did. They had a touch of Tom's invulnerability to it, if not as extreme.
They already had what they wanted.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
A more content folk, hobbits
Varda - 02/04/2018
Aye.
Immense will-power, already had their hearts' desire, and they had a social, friendly way of living that made Gandalf want to vacation there.
Gandalf didn't know where the Ring was. The Valar did.
Neatly put them together, as they did Thorin and Gandalf, the Fellowship and Elrond. Then let them do what they willed.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Such clever Valar.
Varda - 02/04/2018
Struggling to get things to work out.
One has to wonder how often it didn't work out. Such as getting second choice Boromir instead of Faramir. Or no one showing up at all.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Makes you wonder how many didn't show up.
Varda - 02/04/2018
Aye, and for what things?
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
For the Council, I mean.
Varda - 02/04/2018
They seemed to want nine. It was an important number.
So perhaps they kept calling even for second best until they got it?
Any further comments, topics, things you wanted to bring up?
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Oh, that works.

Varda - 02/04/2018

At last one pogo-hops forward and is brought down to the hammerpad

it is quite lighthaearted and cheerful
Varda - 02/04/2018
Could be. Enjoy  the flute. Could be for Frodo
Frodo, considering he's the one that has to carry the One Ring all the way to Mount Doom, even inside it, doesn't get a lot said about him.
by us, I mean.
Ar-Pharazon-V - 02/04/2018
Well, he's a bit like... the tragic one, and the normal one... it's his companions that stand out the most.
Varda - 02/04/2018
Again, like the hobbits in the wide world, invisible.
He's said to be the best of the Hobbits, also.
True about being the tragic one.

Heroes of the Storm: 248 now, another 2 levels gained. I'm pretty sure one of them was Lucio, who I actually got MVP position with after last week's mentioned discovery of how he works  Rather fun to play now!
Starcraft II: Warchest part 3 opened! Got a few matches in already for some xp there, though no new skins unlocked yet. It also comes with part 6 of the comic they've been making, wrapping up the story they had going throughout both war chests, but with signs of more to come. Actually some major impact on the post-SCII storyline, so I recommend it if you're into Starcraft lore.
WoW:
No new pets from old raids, though the person who needs the normal difficulty mount from Dragon Soul wasn't here this week, so we went in on heroic to see what it's like. Still heavily outleveled and outgeared, of course, but there were a few interesting extra mechanics which were fun.
Making progress in the current raid, having killed Varimathras on heroic. Coven is next, which we tried tonight; an interesting fight indeed.
This week's weekly was arena skirmishes, pretty much my least favorite of the bunch. Still, I got through it rather quickly. Either I'm getting better, or I'm getting luckier with winning 10 matches
Good thing too, because I had plenty to do this week!
Love is in the Air event started this week. Not much different, mostly that the cosmetic items are now unlockable as holiday appearances, so I have those to collect, and the Apothecaries fight being open from level 16 onwards. However, the really rare mount can only drop from the high-end lootbox which you get from level 98 and up (in other words, current expansion), so if you just need that, no need to bring your low level alts.
However, I found out tonight that the cosmetic items mentioned earlier, dinner suits and lovely dresses, are now bound to your character as cosmetics, rather than tradeable or sellable on the AH, which means you're tied to random box openings from the vendor, hoping that you get them all eventually.
And those boxes require tokens, which also come from the apothecaries fight for all levels (well, 16 and up) so from today onwards I'm killing them with 4 more alts, in the hope to get enough tokens for all the items.
If not, there's always next year
I've also been hunting for the Lost Mail, an item spawning near random mailboxes in Dalaran at several hours interval. So, very rare, as people will pick them up quickly or even camp a mailbox for hours at a time. It starts a short questline that ends up with a title, a minigame, a new pet, and another Lost Mail, though that one can be shared/traded/AH'd, while the original one is soulbound. This way the mail goes through the entire community, letting more and more people complete the questline.
Still several tens of thousands of gold on the AH, though, and while one piece of mail (well, sequence of mails) is circulating through my raidgroup, I still wished to find an original one of my own.
And sure enough, this week I got very lucky and picked one up before anyone else spotted it, though it was between the mailbox and a Love is in the Air decoration, so the latter might have caused people not to notice? Or I was just there at the right time.
So now I'm ready to start that questline
However! Currently I'm in the middle of another project that I started this week, and should finish on tuesday. And that is Fisherfriends!
6 npcs in the Broken Isles, on a fixed rotation of 6 days, each day one of them is up. Fish special objects for them, deliver them for reputation, and items to buy with them. Each npc has a special fishing bobber toy, as well as one extra item, also usually a toy, but there's also a fishing recipe and I believe a pet, though I've not done that one yet. And if you get to Best Friend rank with all 6, you get an achievement and new appearances for your fishing artifact.
Speaking of, one of the rares in Argus paid off, giving me the best fishing line in the game, just in time for me to start that project with the ultimate pole/line combination
The new patch this week did put some delay in the project, though; server was unavailable for most of tuesday night, and when I got in, there were no groups up for the fisherfriend of that day. And you do want to get in a group, or a raid even, because you can fish an item at each fisherfriend that summons a mob that boosts the fishing rate of the special currency by a lot, and if you're in a raid of 20 people or more the boost is almost always up. With that, you should be done with each fisherfriend in less than 2 hours of fishing.
Per friend, that is.
So that's why I still need to clear that fisherfriend tomorrow night, and the tuesday one I'm only halfway because I didn't have much time on wednesday  But with the other one on delay as well I figured one more day wouldn't hurt.
As for the new patch, and the new races... I'm waiting for the physical Collector's Edition, so can't make them yet. I have seen them around, though. Apparently the Void Elves (and to a degree the Highborne) are really, really skinny. Still, I'll be making one when the expansion releases anyway, and already decided on a look. The patch also came with embassies at Stormwind and Orgrimmar, though, and I explored the former a bit. It's mainly all the racial leaders with a bit of gossip dialogue. But I think that when you have the expansion bought or pre-ordered, with the new racial storylines, that's where they'll start.
And I think that's my report for this week!
Oh, forgot Heroes of the Storm brawl
Dodge-brawl again this week, 5 chromies vs 5 chromies spamming sand blast from one side of the pool to the other.
Always a lot of fun
And that's it!

Oh, that "fishing recipe" was meant to be a cooking recipe, though with fish
