We have more dragon models for you.
Remember the green dragon model from last time? [Note: from Rob Roy's Girl-(T)]
We had a request to see the red dragon better, so I asked the maker of
that one and he obliged us. He's now Doc Mortrand-(T) and here's his
dragon:
Pardon, Doc Mortand-(T)
Doctor Death if you need a translation.
He's also the one that did the ship barely seen in the background of the green dragon.
ArienV - Today at 4:18 PM
very impressive
Varda - Today at 4:19 PM
He does a lot of gaming model painting, and makes some ship models as
well. Both the painters are good friends that we play tabletop games
with, such as Pathfinder, Midnight, and even board games.

On to our topic for today.
If we were to check JRRT's suitcase for the Fantastic Beasts of Tolkien, what might we find in there?
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:42 PM
Is this a reference to something? Other than Tolkien that is?
Aranuir(Aarfon) - Today at 4:42 PM
fire drakes would be on I would think
on
one i meant
Varda - Today at 4:42 PM
Good
Aye, it's a J.K. Rowling book, made into a movie.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:43 PM
Oh, right. I think I heard of that.
Aranuir(Aarfon) - Today at 4:43 PM
werent there special horses?
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:43 PM
Ah yes, Shadowfax and his kin.
Mearas?
Aranuir(Aarfon) - Today at 4:43 PM
not sure what their name is
Varda - Today at 4:43 PM
Mearas, descendants of Nahar that was the horse of Orome from Valinor.
Good
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:43 PM
Were they? I couldn't go further back than Eorl
Varda - Today at 4:44 PM

Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:44 PM
Mosquitos in a swamp.
Varda - Today at 4:45 PM
They were epic mosquitoes. What do they eat when they can't get hobbit?
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:45 PM
Oliphaunt!
Varda - Today at 4:45 PM
Aye
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:45 PM
Just quite a trip.
Varda - Today at 4:46 PM
Since we mentioned Mearas and Nahar, their ancestor, we can mention
the Kine of Araw
(Araw is Sindarin for Orome)
ArienV - Today at 4:47 PM
a boar wasnt it?
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:47 PM
And he had his hunting dogs.
Varda - Today at 4:48 PM
Quote: Vorondil father of Mardil hunted the wild kine of Araw in the far fields of Rhûn
quote: descended from the Kine of
Araw, the huntsman of the Valar, who alone of the Valar came often to
Middle-earth in the Elder Days. Oromë is the High-elven form of
his name."
Kine, another word for cattle, could be oxen.
I suspect our LotRO aurochs are intended to refer to that.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:50 PM
I like the word auroch. It's so majestic.
ArienV - Today at 4:50 PM
ah yes the horn that Boromir always blew before he started a journey
Varda - Today at 4:50 PM
Right, Arien!
ArienV - Today at 4:50 PM
the heirloom of the house of stewarts
Varda - Today at 4:51 PM
Here's a definition of aurochs from wikipedia:
The aurochs (/ˈɔːrɒks/ or /ˈaʊrɒks/;
pl. aurochs, or rarely aurochsen, aurochses), also urus, ure (Bos
primigenius), is an extinct species of large wild cattle that inhabited
Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It is the ancestor of domestic cattle
and the European bison, crossbred with Steppe bison.
Neat comment. They're seen in cave paintings
Some people are crazy, trying to bring it back from extinction. That is one mean, huge cow.
Died off in 1627
Aranuir(Aarfon) - Today at 4:53 PM
I think bringing animals back like the aurochs ans tasmanian tiger is a great idea
Varda - Today at 4:53 PM
Could be. Welcome to Jurassic Park.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:53 PM
Dodos?
Varda - Today at 4:53 PM
Bison in Texas are bad enough for me. : ) But hey, aurochs herds will be nifty.
Aranuir(Aarfon) - Today at 4:54 PM
haha
Varda - Today at 4:54 PM
The aurochs have potential use to man as a large food animal. Maybe we
can find funding for dodos too, get GoFundMe or Kickstarter?
Let's come up with some more Fantastic Beasts. : )
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:55 PM
I mentioned the hunting dogs, earlier?
Varda - Today at 4:55 PM
You mentioned the hunting dogs of Orome. Huan was one that came to Middle-earth.
Aye : )
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:57 PM
Well, there's eagles.
And bears.
Varda - Today at 4:57 PM
Ravens and Thrushes were birds that spoke and carried messages
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:58 PM
Oh my.
Varda - Today at 4:58 PM
No lions and tigers? : )
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 4:58 PM
Not that I know of!
I do still vaguely recall a reference to great apes in the jungles of the south, but I was never able to find it again.
Varda - Today at 4:58 PM
Intriguing. I wonder if there's a chance of Googling that.
Find out where there's a mention of it and we can add it to our Tolkien Site.
Varda - Today at 5:00 PM
We could use articles for both ravens and thrushes. Would be especially good to enlighten people after the Hobbit movies.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:00 PM
Would be nice, but it's been years since I started looking... I'd probably have to go over every book with a fine comb.
Not that there's anything wrong with that!
Varda - Today at 5:01 PM
That's why we can try Googling, then find it from that in the books for
all the stuff they left out, misspelled, and misquoted.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:01 PM
http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Apes ooh, Helm's Deep... looking that up right now.
Apes
Varda - Today at 5:01 PM
Woot!
There were also special ponies. Small ones for Hobbits, shaggy ones of the Dwarves in cold country I think.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:03 PM
I always thought it was mentioned in the siege of Minas Tirith, never looked for it at Helm's Deep...
Varda - Today at 5:03 PM
Someone must have made a comment?
Aranuir(Aarfon) - Today at 5:04 PM
the horses in Iceland look exactly like this...they look like big shaggy dogs
Varda - Today at 5:04 PM
Sounds right
and Shetland ponies, maybe
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:07 PM
Ah, got it.
Page 166 in my book.
"Hundreds of long ladders were lifted
up. Many were cast down in ruin, but many more replaced them, and Orcs
sprang up them like apes in the dark forests of the South. Before the
wall's foot the dead and broken were piled like shingle in a storm;
ever higher rose the hideous mounds, and still the enemy came on."
Varda - Today at 5:08 PM
Great catch! Talk about a brief mention.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:09 PM
Yes, but it did stick in my head as one of the few references to the world south of Harad
Varda - Today at 5:09 PM
Excellent
White wolves came down into the
Shire from the north when they were starving. Not sure if that counts,
but the hobbits sure thought it did when they had to fight them.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:11 PM
Can imagine.
Varda - Today at 5:13 PM
Of course that leads to Wargs, intelligent, allied with orcs (goblins).
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:13 PM
Also spiders, in that neighbourhood.
Varda - Today at 5:13 PM
Aye
Ones in Mirkwood worked together, had a language that Bilbo understood through the One Ring.
There's another ability of the One Ring we don't hear about much. Translator.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:14 PM
....Yes. I thought they were just sapient and talking common.
Varda - Today at 5:14 PM
Bet Frodo understood more Orcish talk than he wanted while in Mordor.
Hmm, maybe I'm remembering wrong and need to go re-read. Re-read, what a concept.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:15 PM
Well it's easily something I'd overlook.
Varda - Today at 5:15 PM
The Mirkwood spiders seem to have had some Ungoliant blood, making them
large and smart. And were interesting for Shelob, as well as being
lunch.
Shelob was apparently more closely related to Ungoliant than others we know about.
Which leads to the question: are there more Shelob types hidden around?
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:16 PM
I wonder how old spiders would get, might as well be first generation.
Varda - Today at 5:17 PM
Shelob was well-supplied with food, protection from most things
including the elements. She was apparently quite old and still lively.
Anarion - Today at 5:18 PM
After reading the silmarilion, I just kinda headcannoned that the
mirkwood spiders were borderline-sentient as well, but that could be
way wrong, and probably not how they were portrayed in the hobbit
or even properly sentient
In that sense they could all be shelob-types
Varda - Today at 5:19 PM
Always a question what we want to consider sentient.
Aye, just smaller. Maybe that was a group of males? Don't run into the females then!
The size might have been a function of age?
They did work together, they did have language. Sounds close enough to sentient.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:22 PM
Makes you wonder how many other races were sentient, but just without anyone listening in on them.
I think Beorn had some very clever servants.
Varda - Today at 5:23 PM
Fun word there, headcannoned.
Good point. Those of Beorns were awfully smart. Horses, giant bees.
Werewolves are another thing we hear of in the Silmarillion.
Sauron even transformed into one, trying to be the greatest werewolf that was in the prophecy.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:30 PM
Turns out he wasn't.
Varda - Today at 5:30 PM
Must have been because he also had a cat form, Tevildo. ; )
JRRT was not fond of cats.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:30 PM
Disliked cats, liked dogs, disliked wolves?
Varda - Today at 5:31 PM
Not sure he disliked wolves, but he might have. I found nothing about it, personally.
They were a danger to livestock, so maybe. But so were eagles, as the Great Eagles admitted.
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:32 PM
Perhaps so were bears?
Varda - Today at 5:32 PM
Beornings may not have been, as they were vegetarian
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:33 PM
Ah yes.
Varda - Today at 5:36 PM
Thuringwethil looked like a bat, when she wore her bat pelt. That's the one Luthien used.
ArienV - Today at 5:39 PM
Right Valarights
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:39 PM
Bats, sure, that works
Did we have Crebain yet?
Varda - Today at 5:39 PM
Good one, not yet!
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:39 PM
More birds!
Varda - Today at 5:39 PM
We did run long, sorry Arien.
Shall we call it for the night?
ArienV - Today at 5:41 PM
well i certainly have to call it i fear :frowning:
I am quite sleepy
Varda - Today at 5:41 PM
Have a good night, Arien. See you all next week!
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 5:41 PM

Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 6:03 PM
Personal gaming report!
For flashgaming I've got 3 simple-ish physics puzzlers this week.
http://www.physicsgames.net/game/Cannon_Basketball_4.html
is the first! Shoot tiny basketballs across a level, collecting stars,
flipping switches, and ultimately getting one in the basket. You've got
an unlimited supply of basketballs to fire, with the bonus score
depending on how many stars you collect. Gets trickier later on when
you have to prevent blocking your own path of success, by doing stuff
in the right order
Physics Games - Cannon Basketball 4
Cannon Basketball is back with 30 new levels! Launch basketballs as you try solve puzzles, collect stars, and make baskets.
http://www.physicsgames.net/game/Ball_in_the_Hole.html
is the second game! Similar goal, different mechanics. Click and drag
to launch the ball into the hole in as few tries as possible. Later on
you get multiple colors, wherein the right ball needs the right
hole to be launched in.
Physics Games - Ball in the Hole
As the title suggests, your objective is simply to put the ball in the
hole. When there are multiple balls, you will need make sure that each
ball lands in its respective colored bucket.
http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/cut_the_rope_experiments
for the third game! Cut ropes and click bubbles to collect all
the stars and feed the candy to the.. baby dragon or whatever it is.
Cut the Rope Experiments - OneMoreLevel.com
Oh, backing up a bit, I'm now doing a bit of reading up and finding out
that the cut the rope thing is actually part of quite a successful
series, mostly for for mobile platforms.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cut_the_Rope if you want to know more
Cut the Rope
Cut the Rope is a series of physics-based puzzle video games developed
by the Russian entertainment company ZeptoLab for several platforms and
devices. It consists of the original Cut the Rope (2010) published by
Chillingo, Cut the Rope: Experime...
Right, Blizzard gaming!
Hearthstone: Expansion started!
Opened all the packs I'd saved up since the pack-per-quest started. Got
3 legendaries out of them, and an additional free one just for logging
in.
Brawl this week is as random as it gets: Choose a class, get a deck of
random cards that all do something random somewhere in the description
Heroes of the Storm: Better brawl this week: Azmodunk, with 10 players
using Azmodan's basketball skin, throwing large aoe bombs at each
other. The more you or your team kills with them, the higher the damage
gets for each bomb. The slightest early advantage can easily run out of
hand until one team just overpowers the other, which is what happened
in both matches, but in one of them that winning team was mine
2 new levels gained, up to 268, including Raynor who's now level 14.
Getting multiple at 14 now which I'll need to replace when they reach
15 for the most efficient rewards
WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V - Today at 7:00 PM
We're still doing the old raids for pets in some of our party, and
mounts for some of us as well, even though I've gotten all 12 pets now.
Taking much less time now, though, I think we were done in about 40
minutes. Probably nothing to report for that for a while, but at least
it's done quick
Still doing heroic raiding, and this reset we actually cleared the
entire raid in 2 days, which means I didn't have to miss any. Didn't
get a lot of loot upgrades myself, except a pretty good Life relic for
my Restoration artifact, one of the items I wanted to prepare myself
more for the Restoration druid challenge.
Also got my second-last restoration spec legendary, with the last one remaining being the last one I want for the challenge.
Once I have that, the next time the mage tower is up I'll give the
challenge a few tries. If I can complete it I'll be done with that for
the druid
In the meantime, I did get another appearance for all specs, by winning
the last of the 10 rated battlegrounds I needed  With the
battleground weekly quest this week it seemed like the best time.
I also got the second leatherworking pattern, out of two, that can only
be gotten through rated battlegrounds, so I'm done with that too.
Nothing left to collect for Leatherworking except the pattern from
Cordana (which is taking forever!) and a whole bunch of patterns from
the Sightless Eye vendor in Dalaran. Will need to work on those in the
future!
New pet from Kosumoth! For the first time in the months since I
unlocked him, the bi-weekly quest rewarded the pet this week. Been a
long time waiting, but I have it now, a little spiked tentacle thing.
Got another trait on the fishing pole done, with 4 to go. The artifact
power needed for the next one shot up a bit more than I expected, so I
looked up the costs for the last 4 traits. Turns out the last one isn't
50k, but 82.5k power, and the final total I still need is rather higher
than I'd expected.
A bit discouraging, but some in my raidgroup pointed out that there's a
way to get the rare fish required even faster than what I've been doing
now. I knew of the method, but I didn't think it'd be that quick:
Possibly 4 times faster than what I've been doing. However, that method
can only be used for 1 in 6 days, by going to the Suramar fisherfriend.
But I think I will do that, and spend the remaining time on other stuff!
Which is, right now, continuing to work on the First Aid queststarters.
Got another of those, now missing 9 of them. That will be my next major
project then, on days when the fisherfriend is not up
And finally I'll mention that one of the WoW books arrived which, on
the website, looked like it was indefinitely postponed. I'm not sure
what the story is behind that, but it gives me hope that the other 2
might still arrive in the near future as well.
And that's my report for the week! For the near future I'll mention
that I'm planning on possibly getting one more appearance from 5-man
achievements tomorrow, if our entire group is available. And also that
in a week or two will be my 13th WoW anniversary, for which I'm
considering buying myself the Shu-zen mount early, rather than waiting
until my Dark Iron character is made. Have not decided yet.
And that's it from me!

Thanks, Phar
Grats on the book.

Thanks  Part 2 of the War of the Ancients trilogy. When I got
the email that it was coming, I was kinda worried that they'd messed up
and sent me the first one again or something, because it shouldn't have
been available. But it was the right one!
The two missing books are now the first Sunwell manga, and the last Warcraft Legends manga.
