Varda Valar (23:00:35): Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
Varda Valar (23:00:40): Membership:
Varda Valar (23:00:57): If you're here, please type
Manwe.
Varda Valar (23:00:59): Manwe
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:00:58): Manwe
Elladan (23:01:11): Manwe
Varda Valar (23:01:19): Yay for us three!
Varda Valar (23:01:44): Arien went to a barbecue,
where she may be impersonating a hobbit.
Varda Valar (23:01:56): Eonwe wanted to be here but
wasn't sure if work would allow.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:02:10): 144 people at the barbecue?
Varda Valar (23:02:19): Lenwe has been showing up
late in Discord for his vote for that as the meeting area.
Varda Valar (23:02:24): Could be. :)
Varda Valar (23:02:51): Irmo is no longer able to
show for the Discord part of the meeting as work started up again.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:03:09): Aw.
Varda Valar (23:03:34): Gorlim is in the evacuation
zone in Houston but in an area where they are allowed to remain and
even keep electricity, so he's playing LotRO. :)
Elladan (23:03:43): :O
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:03:46): Yay!
Varda Valar (23:04:01): Elwing is also ok, just
careful of which street to drive in.
Varda Valar (23:04:12): Generallyk the Valarites are
ok. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:04:17): Generally?
Varda Valar (23:04:34): Stores are a bit low but
working hard to have stock.
Varda Valar (23:04:58): Electricity sometimes goes
down but has gotten much more reliable.
Varda Valar (23:05:29): Places are reopening.
Varda Valar (23:05:55): This news is for the
Valarites. Of course there are areas where things aren't as good, but
our folk are ok.
Varda Valar (23:06:16): Dis is north of the flooded
area, doing fine.
Varda Valar (23:06:35): Any other membership news?
Elladan (23:07:01): not from me

Varda Valar (23:08:08): Web:
Varda Valar (23:08:42): New completed story by Little Jewel-(T) "Learning

Varda Valar (23:08:44): http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/fiction/authors/LittleJewel/LearningtoAccept.htm
Varda Valar (23:09:17): She sent an email that she is
having real life problems and is considering having us remove all her
stories whether or not completed.
Varda Valar (23:09:39): So if you want to read any,
read soon. They very well may be going down.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:10:15): Odd choice. Not keen on her
work staying around?
Varda Valar (23:10:25): That is actually her story
from last week, not this week.
Varda Valar (23:10:31): She gave no details.
Varda Valar (23:10:52): Elwing just came on LotRO, so
we know she has electricity and internet. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:10:56): Yay!
Elladan (23:11:13): :)
Varda Valar (23:11:30): LotRO has been a more
reliable way for us in the flood areas to contact each other than
phones, heh.
Varda Valar (23:11:48): In art news,
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:11:55): well, MMOs are useful as
mass communication devices :)
Varda Valar (23:12:26): DeepGroover-(T) is working on
an amazing model, a bust, of
Gandalf. I've seen the start on it and it's going to be a top notch one.
Varda Valar (23:13:10): The Bohemian Weasel-(T) is
working on a painting of the
Old Forest with hobbits but is not done yet. Looking forward to that
one too.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:13:25): Ooh, something LotR
specific :)
Varda Valar (23:13:31): Aye :)
Varda Valar (23:13:35): for both!
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:13:45): Yes, but for the first
that's a rarer occasion ;)
Varda Valar (23:13:52): Aye to that.
Varda Valar (23:14:35): oh, Eonwe reminded me under
Membership:
Varda Valar (23:14:52): the next Games Site Mass Update is coming
soon.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:15:03): Ah yes, I figured that's
what he was talking about earlier :)
Varda Valar (23:15:12): Also, next month is the
guild's Anniversary!
Varda Valar (23:15:51): Many items take a lot of time
to make, so it's not too soon to start if anyone is doing a drawing,
other art, writing, etc for it.
Varda Valar (23:16:06): Be sure to label it as part
of the Anniversary when sending it in.

bit too. :)

Varda Valar (23:30:16): On to Tolkien:
Varda Valar (23:30:31): First, did either of you have
a topic you wanted to try?
Varda Valar (23:31:06): One of
Tolkien's strong abilities was the way he used settings as part of his
world-building.
Varda Valar (23:31:42): Two things I was thinking
about on that are (1) themes (2) reversals.
Varda Valar (23:32:47): The landscape or towns or
other settings can help set up an atmosphere to help give the author's
opinion on the action, or for pure story-telling to do the same.
Varda Valar (23:32:56): Sometimes it's mixed, not
always intentionally.
Varda Valar (23:33:26): When we see the setting of the Shire in the beginning of the
LotR, what kind of atmosphere do we see?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:33:59): Rural, social, that sort of
thing?
Varda Valar (23:35:55): Aye. Is it eerie like
Children of the Corn? or what?
Elladan (23:35:55): farmland
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:36:20): Happier than that, I think,
enjoying the fruits of the land :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:36:33): Throwing parties, giving
gifts. Smoking and drinking.
Elladan (23:36:45): and the music is played in a
major key (more upbeat)
Varda Valar (23:36:53): There you go!
Varda Valar (23:37:00): Party time, definitely.
Varda Valar (23:38:23): It's a place where a
battle-weary wizard can go to relax, eat, smoke his pipe, kick back
with friends.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:38:31): Yep.
Varda Valar (23:38:34): Not a place he expected to
find the One Ring.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:38:50): Never can tell with those
adventuring hobbits.
Varda Valar (23:39:15): Things a burglar brings home.
:)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:39:29): Right!
Elladan (23:39:45): cheap women
Varda Valar (23:39:50): The Shire is a small town
atmosphere and rural. Pastoral, pleasant.
Elladan (23:40:20): oh I thought you were asking what
I burglar might bring home
Varda Valar (23:40:25): Women that you have to marry
and raise a ton of hungry kids with. Doesn't sound cheap.
Varda Valar (23:40:33): Bilbo brought home the One
Ring.
Varda Valar (23:41:09): With Bree, the atmosphere shifts a bit.
Varda Valar (23:41:35): It's a bigger town
atmosphere. Hobbits mix with humans.
Varda Valar (23:41:45): What kind of atmosphere does
it have?
Varda Valar (23:42:18): Is it pleasant and cheerful
like the Shire? JRRT loved the countryside and small town folk.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:42:23): A bit gloomier, with some
shady characters.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:42:28): Still some partying and
drinking.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:42:41): Apple tossing.
Varda Valar (23:43:20): True. It begins to go
downhill. Traitor like Bill Ferny, part goblin that associates with him
of a kind later seen around Mordor.
Varda Valar (23:43:52): The Ranger seems foul, but
they find him to be a major asset. A reversal of appearance.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:44:09): All that is gold does not
glitter.
Varda Valar (23:44:22): Exactly.
Varda Valar (23:44:33): All that glitters is not
necessarily gold either.
Varda Valar (23:44:46): We find glittery things in
the mounds of the Barrow-wights.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:45:01): Well, they are nice clothes
and weapons.
Varda Valar (23:45:45): So we have lovely things,
glittery things that everyone would want.
Varda Valar (23:46:04): Yet it's not a place we'd
care to hang out in the way the Shire was.
Varda Valar (23:46:23): Very spooky.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:46:27): Yes.
Varda Valar (23:47:11): Rivendell. Out in the wild area,
drop down into a hidden valley, and what do we find? Atmosphere, good
or bad place to be?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:47:46): Good place. Happiness. More
partying and drinking! And storytelling. Always good weather, with
friendly, welcoming people.
Varda Valar (23:48:03): Yay! We want to live in this
place.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:48:12): *looks at rp* Seems that we
do!
Varda Valar (23:48:18): hehe
Varda Valar (23:48:21): College or library town of
magical peace and learning and music. Outdoors, small town.
Varda Valar (23:48:28): It's pretty much JRRT's
heaven.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:48:34): Oh yes. I'd love it too.
Varda Valar (23:48:42): Me too. :)
Varda Valar (23:48:50): *sets up the Valar Guild
there*
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:48:52): hehe
Elladan (23:49:13): Sorry I can't stay longer guys :(
Gotta run. Good to see you two! Glad you're all safe in TX! <3
Elladan (23:49:14): Namarie
Varda Valar (23:49:15): Going back a bit to Weathertop. It was in the wilds too,
and an elevated place.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:49:16): Namarie!
Varda Valar (23:49:26): Have a great evening, Elladan!
Varda Valar (23:49:35): We made it to your home town
at least. :)
Elladan (23:49:38): You as well!
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:49:43): deep in the heaaaart of
Texas..
Elladan (23:49:54): You made it where?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:49:59): Rivendell ;)
Varda Valar (23:50:11): Elladan's home town.
Elladan (23:50:23): ohhh I thought you meant you left
the floods and made it to my real hometown haha
Elladan (23:50:26): gotcha ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:50:26): heh
Elladan (23:50:31): Good night!
Elladan (23:50:33): Namarie
(23:50:43) Elladan left this group chat.
Varda Valar (23:50:48): Namarie :)
Varda Valar (23:52:44): Weathertop hosts ruins of
long gone great men and kings of men, and is a site of confrontation
first for Gandalf and then for Aragorn and the hobbits with the ruins
of long gone men who were once kings and but who are now wraiths
serving Sauron.
Varda Valar (23:52:58): Weathertop hosts ruins of
long gone great men and kings of men, and is a site of confrontation
first for Gandalf and then for Aragorn and the hobbits with the ruins
of long gone men who were once kings and but who are now wraiths
serving Sauron.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:53:07): Very fitting.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:53:16): Maybe they'd been to the
place when they were still alive?
Varda Valar (23:53:24): sorry, must have been up a
bit from the bottom of the chat, thought it didn't paste.
Varda Valar (23:53:31): It's possible.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:53:49): Another eerie place.
Varda Valar (23:53:56): True.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:53:55): Dark.
Varda Valar (23:54:40): It's where they hoped to find
Gandalf, where they set up a camp, and had one of their worst contacts
with the enemy.
Varda Valar (23:54:59): Frodo never fully recovered,
and that was when he was barely starting out.
Varda Valar (23:55:32): Too real. Seems as if people
are always having to go into challenges with some injury, no matter how
well trained up they are or equipped.
Varda Valar (23:55:49): Another reversal happened to
Gimli.
Varda Valar (23:55:58): Gimli goes eagerly into Moria with his friends, expecting to
display the underground palatial wonder-world of his people with its
wonderful feasting. But it is a tomb.
Varda Valar (23:56:13): That was a place with a lot
of atmosphere.
Varda Valar (23:56:51): Instead of the expected
torchlight and probably all sorts of fancy lighting, it was mostly dark.
Varda Valar (23:57:08): Instead of being well-tended,
it was a mess.
Varda Valar (23:57:27): Instead of dwarves, it held
enemies.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:57:50): It does seem difficult to
imagine it light and happy rather than dark and stuffy.
Varda Valar (23:57:59): But Gimli ran into another
reversal later, perhaps even greater for him than that.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:58:02): I could not be a dwarf ;)
Varda Valar (23:58:11): So it was a re-reversal:
Varda Valar (23:58:21): Gimli and Legolas go with
other refugees from what may be a hopeless battle against endless orcs
into a storage cavern for hiding women and children, and discover the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, a cave
that to a dwarf or even an elf is a giant piece of artwork.
Monday, September 4, 2017
Varda Valar (00:00:14): In a re-reversal of
Rivendell, we have Lothlorien:
Varda Valar (00:00:22): Lothlorien is a contrast
after Moria, with golden leaved trees and music. But it too, has
tomb-like qualities as the songs are requiems for the death of Gandalf
and the whole place has stagnated in an unchanging, although beautiful,
environment.
Varda Valar (00:01:48): Would you have any other
places with reversal atmospheres you'd like to mention? We're at the
hour now.
Varda Valar (00:01:58): Maybe Gondor?
Varda Valar (00:03:10): The setting reversals are
where one thing seems to be getting set up but another thing happens.
Varda Valar (00:03:24): An expectation turned around.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:10:41): Sorry, was needed for a few
minutes.
Varda Valar (00:10:48): No worries
Varda Valar (00:10:58): We're about to the end
anyway. :)
Varda Valar (00:11:13): *picks up a hammer gingerly*
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:11:17): Well, let me think...
Varda Valar (00:11:19): *thonk*
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:11:18): Fangorn?
Varda Valar (00:11:35): *hammer squeezes into a thin
line*
Varda Valar (00:11:45): *oozes out into a runnel*
Varda Valar (00:11:55): *slithers back to the shelf*
top
Varda Valar (00:11:58): After-meeting!
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:11:59): Dark, wooded place, lot of
life, but also a sadness with no new entlings and being chopped down
from the side.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:12:13): Hammersnake?
Varda Valar (00:12:21): Fangorn Forest, good one.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:12:50): Mordor... you know, vulcanic places
are supposed to be among the most fertile ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:13:00): volcanic?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:13:05): I never know whether it's a
u or o.
Varda Valar (00:13:22): vulcanism, volcanic. Quite
right
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:13:29): sounds about right
Varda Valar (00:13:48): That's one I hadn't thought
of, too. :)
Varda Valar (00:14:30): Should be fertile, but it's
barren.
Arien V (00:19:25): Aiya all :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:19:54): Aiya!
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:28:02): Oki, I guess I'll start my
gaming report!
Varda Valar (00:28:17): Aiya Arien!
Varda Valar (00:28:24): Sorry, missed your coming in
:)
Arien V (00:28:27): :)
Arien V (00:28:41): just got back about ten mins ago
:)
Varda Valar (00:28:49): We were talking about places
in Middle-earth that set one expectation with an atmosphere then
reversed it.
Varda Valar (00:28:58): Surprised that it was common!
Varda Valar (00:29:07): Welcome back :)
Arien V (00:29:12): nice one :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:29:16): Always makes for a happy or
sad surprise.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:29:59): And yeah, Gondor... supposed to be happy and
prosperous, but when you get there and the tree is dead, the steward's
going mad and all the soldiers are scared of the oncoming attack...

Ar-Pharazon-V (00:32:18): 3 flashgames this week!
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:33:21): http://www.kongregate.com/de/games/Sunset_Equinox/little-alchemy-2
is the first, combine different elements to make new elements until you
experiment your way through all several hundred of em. And apparently
it saves your progress on different websites because I was playing on
another first and it's still here :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:36:39): http://www.kongregate.com/games/kekgames/rhomb
is the second game! A puzzle game where you have to decide on the order
to get rhombuses to their targets without getting in the way of each
other. Starts simple enough, but then you get switches and holding
areas and links and it gets rather more interesting.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:40:30): http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/save_the_cowboy
is the third game, save the hanging cowboys by shooting arrows through
the ropes, by aiming a bow rather awkwardly. Bit of practice and you'll
be able to get 3 stars :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:45:50): Blizzard gaming:
Arien V (00:51:23): ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUPFwrmgLvQ
)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:53:13): Heroes of the Storm: Brawl this week
was the Hanamura map with 5x Tracer vs 5x Tracer, with core health,
payload damage to core, and empowerment multiplied by 4, while kills
would also chip down the enemy core. Nice fast-paced assassin-based
matches, though when it comes to hide-and-seek games I do prefer the
Nova brawl instead.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:53:50): But it did give me a level
on Tracer, which brought my total to 210, giving me a rare chest,
containing a new skin and an epic mount :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:55:32): (sometimes I wonder, Arien,
if all of Tolkien's poems were meant to be sung or merely recited)
Varda Valar (00:55:58): (what is a song but poetry
sung?)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:56:13): (interesting point, but
maybe some of them were not meant to be sung ;))
Varda Valar (00:56:53): (as a kid, I promptly
memorized and sang the troll sat alone :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:56:57): Diablo 3: Made it to 70! Finished
season journey chapter 2. Now working on 3, which is basically doing
bounty acts, of which I've done 3 now.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:57:56): After finishing chapter 3
I'll receive the 4-piece bonus on this season's class-set, which in the
Crusader's case is the one set that already gives its humongous damage
increase at 4-piece instead of 6-piece.. which in turn should allow me
to breeze through chapter 4 pretty quickly and get the reward pet for
this season!
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:58:48): Starcraft II: Training Level'd my
way through phase 2 of the war chest now. Still over a week to go until
phase 3 starts, so I'll put that on hold for now.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:59:57): Hearthstone: 4 classes to level 50
now. The first golden cards they'll receive at 51 are generally not the
most useful, but there's a few nice ones there. Other 5 classes are
pretty close.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:00:46): Note: 51 and onwards gives
the golden versions of the class-neutral basic cards, as in, cards you
can use with every class. So when you do get a golden version, it's
immediately useful in a lot more decks :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:04:17): Brawl this week was a
standard-deck version of an old one where cards you play cost health
instead of mana. You can make use of that by using expensive cards that
can claim a kill faster than they cost you the health. Other than that,
options are open!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:12:35): WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:13:35): Raiding going okay-ish, got
a few more Maiden kills, still working on Avatar. Matter of execution
and timing, really. We've gotten to phase 2 a few times, which seems a
bit easier, and if we can keep everyone alive it shouldn't be much of a
problem. Almost had him once.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:15:30): This week's weekly was
timewalks, went well enough. Still saving up the timewarped badges for
now, since I've nothing left to buy, and maybe when the next one is
implemented (no doubt during the next expansion) maybe I can buy
everything at once ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:16:32): Got a few more marks of
honor from pvp world quests, and for pet world quests I fought Aulier
for the second-last time. He only needs to spawn one more time and then
I'll have all the families at 100%!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:17:42): 7.3 came this week, but I
haven't gone to Argus yet. It did come with a few new things, like the
new pets from old raids that I'll start on tomorrow, and the new
Darkmoon Faire mount, which requires 1000 tickets.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:19:21): I did a bit of research,
did some calculations, and if I do the DMF minigames and pet battles 8
times a week, as well as deliver all the 9 quest starters every time it
comes around, I should get the zeppelin mount in December. Since the
Faire started this weekend again, I've already been busy, and am
nearing 200 tickets already :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:22:15): Continuing my major
questing projects: Am now at 10 out of 40 fragments for Illidan's soul
prism, and have worked my way further through Suramar. I'm now on the
8th of 9 story arcs for the Insurrection achievement, with currently
the Elvish armies being stuck under a timestop spell which I'll need to
stop. I hope to be done up to the start of the Nighthold quests by the
end of this week.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:23:59): I'm also progressing on
Balance of Power: I've finished the Emerald Nightmare raid stuff, and
did a bunch more quests. Almost all the 5-man instances need to be
visited on mythic difficulty at one point or other, and I've been able
to coordinate my quest progress such that I can visit one mythic a day,
which combines well with the soul prism stuff.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:24:41): That, I should also be able
to finish before the next weekend, when I hope to be able to start the
Nighthold raid quests, bringing them all together :)
Arien V (01:25:00): nice one :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:26:37): In doing so, I also got a
new leatherworking recipe from mythic Court of Stars, so yay! I think I
need 3 more recipes from 5-man instances.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:29:56): And finally, looking at the
near future when my Suramar and Balance of Power quests are halted by
Nighthold content, I've started doing some prep-work for one of my next
projects, the falcosaurs, giving several mounts. It'll be a slow
process, taking about 2 months for the main 4 questlines, which I hope
to fit in among my other projects, eventually also leading to a
rep-grind which requires me to kill 420 players during pvp quests and,
later on, battlegrounds. Lot of work, but I do hope I'll have time for
it all while still working on the main stories.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:30:40): Busy future ahead, but
it'll be fun, I hope :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:31:47): And I think that's my
report fo this week!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:32:18): *for
Arien V (01:55:54): Namarie all :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:55:58): namarie!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:05:46): Ooh, forgot something.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:06:22): For Hearthstone I started working on the
Frozen Throne missions, clearing the prologue (getting a Gul'dan death
knight card as reward) and Marrowgar.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:06:30): Gotta clear it all!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:06:41): And get a bunch of packs in
return :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (04:20:53): namarie, sending transcript
tomorrow!
Varda Valar (04:21:10): Namarie and thanks!
