Lenwe (-V) (22:33:21):    Aiya everyone :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:33:29):    Aiya!
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:36:23):    Did the clocks change in the US yet?
Lenwe (-V) (22:37:59):    Not until November :(
Lenwe (-V) (22:38:07):    We still have to be content with waking up in the dark for a bit
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:38:25):    Ah, I think we're earlier than you then, I think we're moving the clock next weekend.
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:38:46):    which means that for me, the meeting starts an hour earlier, I think?
Lenwe (-V) (22:39:30):    Ah, that makes things interesting
Lenwe (-V) (22:39:50):    We moved from Ohio, and had a 2-hour time change, back in April, and I'm still adjusting to it
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:40:00):    Heh.
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:40:22):    Amazing how you can stay in the same country and still switch so many hours.
Lenwe (-V) (22:40:32):    For some reason I still subconsciously think the meeting starts at 5pm...
Lenwe (-V) (22:40:39):    It's a wide country, ha
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:41:05):    While we share our timezone with over a dozen neighbours ;)
Lenwe (-V) (22:41:16):    And then Arizona just likes to mess with the rest of the U.S. by not observing daylight savings
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:41:23):    haha
Lenwe (-V) (22:41:31):    Ha, that's convenient
Varda Valar (22:55:57):    Aiya
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:56:24):    Aiya!
Varda Valar (22:56:46):    Who all is present here? Also loading into Discord, LotRO.
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:57:03):    Pharazon here.
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:57:14):    Arien's on vacation.
Varda Valar (22:58:03):    Happy vacationing to Arien!
Varda Valar (22:58:17):    Lenwe no longer here?
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:58:55):    Just afk, maybe?
Varda Valar (23:00:38):    brb while loading this computer down :)
Lenwe (-V) (23:04:13):    Was afk, am back now
Lenwe (-V) (23:04:21):    Aiya Varda!
Eonwe Valar (23:05:38):    Heya all.

Ar-Pharazon-V (23:05:50):    And grats on the turtle to you too :)
Eonwe Valar (23:06:07):    Thanks :}
Lenwe (-V) (23:06:19):    Aiya!
Varda Valar (23:07:29):    Aiya to Lenwe and Eonwe. :)
Varda Valar (23:07:56):    If there is at least one other person, there is a meeting. More than that is richness. Thank you for coming. :)
Varda Valar (23:08:42):    Also present in Discord, and in the LotRO loading screen.
Varda Valar (23:09:12):    One thing that might be nifty in Discord is the ability to read a passage. But it doesn't go into a transcript well, sadly.
Varda Valar (23:09:28):    I mean as in read aloud
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:10:03):    audio?

Varda Valar (23:10:04):    Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
Varda Valar (23:10:27):    Aye. We have both text and audio channels in Discord, simultaneously.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:10:34):    A bit like Skype, then.

Varda Valar (23:12:51):    Membership:
Varda Valar (23:13:20):    Currently in AIM, we have Ar-Pharazon, Eonwe, Lenwe, and Varda.
Varda Valar (23:13:34):    In Discord, I only note Varda in meeting_place.
Varda Valar (23:13:48):    In LotRO, we have Bregalad, Frodo, and Varda.
Varda Valar (23:14:01):    Arien is on vacation. May she be having a great time!
Varda Valar (23:16:20):    Lenwe is now also speaking in Discord.
Varda Valar (23:16:24):    text I mean
Varda Valar (23:18:10):    In all areas of Valar communication, we try to use polite language as JRRT would have preferred.
Varda Valar (23:18:37):    We may not be as eloquent, of course, but we may try to prevent being displeasing to him, as Tolkien fans. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:18:50):    And displeasing to each other.
Varda Valar (23:18:53):    Bregalad crashed, I think.
Eonwe Valar (23:19:12):    And some of us don't want to have to explain why "mommy's little angel" has a new favorite word :}
Varda Valar (23:19:25):    And that's the truth. :)
Varda Valar (23:19:44):    A sudden loud word is learned quickest by parents and children. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:20:29):    How very convenient..
Varda Valar (23:22:32):    Any other membership news?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:22:52):    Fladrif still seen in Hearthstone!
Varda Valar (23:23:17):    Yay!
Varda Valar (23:23:54):    Elwing is having problems with her computer again. She's about ready to add to its problems by throwing it in the street and running over it, but hasn't quite done that yet.

Varda Valar (23:23:59):    Web:
Varda Valar (23:24:05):    Poetry:
Varda Valar (23:24:09):    "Nienna" by Xiuqi-(T). Thank you to our newest Tolkien member. This poem is also going into the Anniversary page.
Varda Valar (23:24:25):    It is on the Anniversary page, I should say. :)
Varda Valar (23:26:05):

Varda Valar (23:26:50):    Gaming:
Varda Valar (23:27:07):    Eonwe, do you have a general gaming report for us?
Eonwe Valar (23:27:14):    Aye.

Eonwe Valar (23:27:30):    World of Warcraft:

Varda Valar (23:32:42):    Thank you, Eonwe. :)
Varda Valar (23:33:25):    LotRO is still having the Harvest-math Festival.

Varda Valar (23:34:54):    I'll have to clean up the LotRO gamers for the week report in the transcript as its being winged right now:
Varda Valar (23:36:29):
Varda Valar (23:36:57):    For StarCraft/BroodWar: Fangorn, Varda

Varda Valar (23:42:29):    Any other general gaming comments? Seeing other Valarites in your games?
Varda Valar (23:47:30):    Any other comments, suggestions, etc? This is your chance to tell officers any input you want, something you can do every weekend.
Varda Valar (23:54:35):    And now that I am no longer posting in the wrong channel in LotRO, o dear.
Eonwe Valar (23:55:07):    :}
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:55:10):    heh
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:55:24):    Busy a bit, about to escort Anduin across the Broken Shore.
Varda Valar (23:56:54):    I seem to have picked up some new LotRO chat people by accident.

Varda Valar (23:57:00):    Tolkien:
Varda Valar (23:58:24):    What is a fairy-tale?
Varda Valar (23:58:34):    JRRT considers his writing to be fairy-tales.
Monday, October 23, 2017
Varda Valar (00:00:31):    Does anyone here have a comment on what a fairy-tale is?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:00:31):    Well, his elves were originally fairies :)
Varda Valar (00:00:55):    Elf was the word before fairy.
Eonwe Valar (00:01:08):    I didn't want to just say "A tale with fairies in it." :}
Varda Valar (00:01:09):    Faery refers to a place.
Varda Valar (00:01:31):    Later people started calling the denizens of Faery, fairies. Gets confusing.
Varda Valar (00:01:55):    Elves and fairies were back and forth words, and even specialized over time.
Eonwe Valar (00:02:19):    But a better answer would probably be along the lines of, "a tale in which the world we know interseacts with the Other world." Or Faery world.
Varda Valar (00:02:28):    Aye
Varda Valar (00:03:10):    You could say a tale with fairies in it, but JRRT didn't consider that to be a good enough definition.
Varda Valar (00:04:17):    But he seemed to like the one you said second better.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:04:41):    So Valinor/Eressea makes it a fairytale?
Eonwe Valar (00:05:15):    Rivendell and Lothlorien would also be glimpses into that world.
Varda Valar (00:05:16):    It needs to have the place of Faery somehow included in the story.
Varda Valar (00:05:21):    Aye and aye
Varda Valar (00:05:59):    For reference:
The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien #89.
The Tolkien Reader "On Fairy-stories"
Eonwe Valar (00:06:28):    I think I read his essay "On Fairy Stories" some time back, but now it's barely glimpses in my mind if I did.
Eonwe Valar (00:07:00):    It was in the TOlkien Reader I think?
Varda Valar (00:07:00):    To be a fairy-tale, it must touch upon the world of Faerie, and may or may not include its denizens.
Varda Valar (00:07:06):    Aye
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:08:10):    Interesting. So many things of what we think are fairytales, really aren't.
Varda Valar (00:09:11):    Correct!
Varda Valar (00:09:14):    Magic in a fairy-story must never be made fun of.
Varda Valar (00:10:00):    It has a mood and power far from that of a stage magician's. "Gawain and the Green Knight" is a good example of this correct way of looking at the Magic of the realm of Faery.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:10:54):    Does the Elvish Rope thing count as making fun of fairy magic? :)
Varda Valar (00:11:31):    I don't think so. Seems serious enough, as it actually worked. :)
Varda Valar (00:13:30):    Going along with your other comment:
Varda Valar (00:13:32):    As fairy-tales, JRRT excludes "traveler's tales, such as "A Voyage to Lilliput"; beast-fables where the beasts are men thinly disguised with a beast's appearance and usually with no "real" humans present or as mere adjuncts; or using dreaming to explain away the magic - a cheat - (although Dream may be used in a fairy-tale as to unlock powers of the mind.
Varda Valar (00:14:07):    Faery-beings may use illusion but are not themselves illusions.
Varda Valar (00:14:35):    The world of Faerie must be seen as true.
Varda Valar (00:15:01):    A tale of Faery to not be a cheat must provide the desire at the heart of Faerie: "the realization, independent of the conceiving mind, of imagined wonder".
Varda Valar (00:15:29):    The beast-fable misses the Faery-story desire of humans to communicate with animals.

Varda Valar (00:16:12):    What is the origin of the fairy element in story-telling?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:17:01):    Norse mythology comes to mind, if we count Elves. And at some point there's Shakespeare.
Varda Valar (00:17:09):    Sounds good.
Varda Valar (00:17:13):    The mind sees green grass discriminating it from other things. The green suggests that the grass is fair to look upon, pleasing to be around, but added to a face may suggest something horrible. The adjective makes a magical change in perception.
Varda Valar (00:17:41):    Also, if something can be described as heavy, then one can shift it to imagine something that can make heavy objects light and able to fly.
Varda Valar (00:18:06):    In that moment of fantasy, a new form is made and Faerie occurs; Man becomes a sub-creator.
Varda Valar (00:18:30):    Faerie can immediately make new visions by the power of will. This is not just some personification of a power of nature.
Varda Valar (00:19:00):    The story is like a soup, with many ingredients. The tale-teller dips into the ingredients to form the soup of the tale, and the hearers add their own way of tasting to that soup.

Varda Valar (00:19:28):    What is the use of fairy-stories now, as in reading them as tales rather than studying them as curios?
Varda Valar (00:21:00):    Any suggestions for an answer?
Varda Valar (00:21:47):    Are they just for children?
Eonwe Valar (00:21:49):    A glimpse into the human condition?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:21:52):    Stimulating the imagination.
Varda Valar (00:22:04):    Good answers!
Varda Valar (00:22:29):    Only some children and some adults have a taste for fairy-stories, and it may not be exclusive or even dominant.
Varda Valar (00:23:23):    (Dis is now joining the chat in LotRO's Valar channel. )
Varda Valar (00:23:36):    Such a taste tends to increase with age. Fairy-stories can be ruined if left only to be used for children.
Varda Valar (00:24:13):    The story-maker must be a successful sub-creator of a Secondary World into which the mind can enter.
Varda Valar (00:24:43):    Inside that world the place is "true", according to its own laws; failing if it breaks its own laws by destroying the suspension of disbelief, forcing the reader to be outside again in the Primary World.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:24:47):    MLP doesn't count, right? More of a beast-fable? :)
Varda Valar (00:25:36):    Aye. It's populated by unicorns that take the place of people.
Varda Valar (00:25:58):    Not everyone agrees with JRRT, of course.
Varda Valar (00:26:12):    And I am mostly not quoting him, but condensing or paraphrasing.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:26:20):    For what it's worth, their setting magic could be equated to fairy-magic. Also, there are Breezies present in one episode, which are basically a sort of fairy.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:26:26):    *setting and magic
Varda Valar (00:26:34):    His own stuff is really long and we'd have a time of it putting it all in.
Varda Valar (00:26:46):    So you could say it's set in the world of Faery.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:26:56):    In a way, yes!
Varda Valar (00:27:22):    If he continues reading, it is an onlooker rather than as a participant. Once inside, the readers are more likely to ask JRRT if the person or thing was good or wicked.
Varda Valar (00:27:52):    The story is not one that awakens belief but desire, sharpening it unbearably before satisfying it.
Varda Valar (00:28:22):    One may wish to see and experience interaction with a fearsome and beautiful dragon in this amazing other world, while horrified at the thought of meeting it in real life.
Varda Valar (00:28:54):    Sorrow and the shadow of death can bring dignity and sometimes wisdom. Fairy-tales should offer the same gifts as other stories, with the addition of "Fantasy, Recovery, Escape, and Consolation".
Varda Valar (00:29:09):    Lucky you, I'm not going into each of those with hardly any detail. :)
Eonwe Valar (00:29:22):    :}
Eonwe Valar (00:29:41):    Sorry, but I must go afk.
Varda Valar (00:29:56):    No worries. Yay for scroll and transcripts.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:30:31):    What about Warcraft? :)

Varda Valar (00:30:53):    Fantasy. The ability to make mental images is Imagination and may have wide degrees in vividness and strength.
Varda Valar (00:31:08):    What about it?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:31:23):    Fairytale world, or a mere fantasy?
Varda Valar (00:31:40):    Could it be Science-fiction too?
Varda Valar (00:31:45):    Art is the link between Imagination and Sub-creation.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:31:45):    There are elements of it.
Varda Valar (00:32:32):    I'll let you make that call. Giving you JRRT's stuff on what Faery is and you can work from there.
Varda Valar (00:32:35):    Add to this Art the quality of strangeness and wonder; give a freedom from observed fact to make the fantastic.
Varda Valar (00:33:01):    It is difficult to achieve Fantasy, as it must be internally consistent to make it into an immersive Secondary World.
Varda Valar (00:33:40):    Mere Magicians tend to be using greed for self-centered power.
Varda Valar (00:33:52):    (Reason Galadriel didn't like her work being called Magic.)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:34:02):    Ah yes, I believe that internal consistency is a main focus of the Discworld series.
Varda Valar (00:34:37):    Or any good story, aye.
Varda Valar (00:34:40):    Enchantments of the Elves are the desire of man for fantasy, of shared enrichment to make delight, not slaves.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:35:05):    Ah, but the longer the series, the more detailed the world, the harder it is to maintain that consistency unless you use it as a driving factor.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:35:19):    Which is why it became more important as his books went on.
Varda Valar (00:35:42):    You use a kind of "story Bible", or Encyclopedia to keep it all straight.
Varda Valar (00:35:59):    And have overreaching story arcs.
Varda Valar (00:36:15):    Now we get into the real meat.
Varda Valar (00:36:45):    For Drama, the true form in JRRT's mind is Tragedy. But for the fairy-tale, it is the opposite, for which he invented the word: eucatastrophe.
Varda Valar (00:37:09):    This is the true form of the fairy-tale and its highest function.
Varda Valar (00:37:37):    "The consolation of fairy-tales, the joy of the happy ending: or more correctly of the good catastrophe, the sudden joyous "turn" (for there is no true end to a fairy-tale): this joy, which is one of the things fairy-stories can do supremely well, is not essentially "escapist", nor "fugitive.
Varda Valar (00:38:03):    In its fairy-tale - otherworld - setting, it is a sudden and miraculous grace: never to be counted on to recur.
Varda Valar (00:41:25):    Quoting
Varda Valar (00:41:27):    t does not deny the existence of dycatastrophe, of sorrow and failure: the possibility of these is necessary to the joy of deliverance;
Varda Valar (00:41:53):    it denies (in the face of much evidence if you will) universal final defeat and in so far is evangelium, giving a fleeting glimpse of Joy, Joy beyond the walls of the world, poignant as grief.
Varda Valar (00:43:23):    'I'll stop there. Please feel free to make comments if you like (as always, during as well).
Varda Valar (00:44:10):    There's lots more, but that's the gist. I highly recommend reading JRRT's on words on the subject.
Varda Valar (00:44:39):    The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien #89.
    The Tolkien Reader "On Fairy-stories".
Varda Valar (00:46:14):    [Valar] Luithien: 'in theatre arts we learn childrens theatre is not just for young ones'
Varda Valar (00:46:48):    (That was Dis-V in LotRO)

Varda Valar (00:53:19):    If there are no further comments?
Varda Valar (00:54:30):    *reach for a volunteer hammer*
Varda Valar (00:54:47):    *the whole shelf and conveyor belt sparkles*
Varda Valar (00:55:05):    *a gavel leaps up into the hand*
Varda Valar (00:55:15):    *ka-pow!*
Varda Valar (00:55:28):    *it may have had black powder on the nose*
Varda Valar (00:55:42):    *sets the hammer back and it bounces off giggling*
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:55:46):    Shiny explosions.

Varda Valar (00:55:47):    After-meeting!
Varda Valar (00:57:15):    ^^
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:23:42):    Gaming report!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:24:10):    For flashgaming, 2 games for Halloween that have you utilizing your own corpses, and 1 puzzle game.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:30:33): is the first one! A platformer where if you die, you turn into a zombie; use your past zombies to bounce off of to get past the obstacles.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:35:17): is the second game, rather more difficult, and with limited lives, though smaller levels. If you die your corpses just lie around, and can slow down your progress, or be useful as stepping stones.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:37:12): is the third! A puzzle game where you have to push the buttons in the right, logical order, while using other buttons to rotate or move sections.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:37:44):    Quite enjoyed getting through this one, even if it's just a demo, it still gets a bit challenging, and keeps you busy for a while :)

Ar-Pharazon-V (02:01:48):    Blizzard gaming!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:05:41):    Heroes of the Storm: Level 226 now, yay! More Halloween chests. This week's brawl was the nova sniper brawl again, always fun with one-shot kills, stealth and decoys :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:06:54):    Hearthstone: Brawl this week was with decks full of shifters (becoming random minions each turn they're in your hand) and spells for whatever class you pick. Very random, very important to play tactically.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:07:18):    Still pushing on the xp, not much to note there.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:32:05):    WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:34:46):    No luck on new pets from the old Cata raids, though I did get 2 special pets later on in the week.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:35:27):    We did visit the previous raid, Nighthold, for achievements. Got all of them except Aluriel, which requires 3 separate kills.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:49:08):    Falcosaur questing continuing, now almost done with the second one. Talon's Vengeance also continuing, now halfway between friendly and honored.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:49:59):    Getting a few more proper pvp kills there now, rather than just killing friends. Should help a bit more.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:50:54):    Done my 7 timewalks for the weekly quest, with a few new achievements on the alts because they had not seen those specific instances yet. Yay for them!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:52:55):    For Hallow's End, there are 3 new items: a pet and 2 toys, each toy for one half of a horse costume, similar to the dragon costume in the Lunar Festival. Total required 450 tricky treats, but with a bunch of dailies each day and visiting all the candybuckets in the world, I managed to get all 450 today, and get the new stuff :) Including the new pet, Naxxy, a floating Naxxramas. Which got hotfixed later on to fly with you when you're flying as a player, which is always fun :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:54:37):    Other new thing is that, like with the other holidays for the past few months, all the cosmetic rewards are permanently unlocked in the appearance tab, though only useable for the specific holiday. But you have to earn them first. For Hallow's End it's about 4 witch's hats, obtainable from the daily near Bradensbrook, and I've gotten 2 so far. They all look alike, though, so I don't really mind if I don't get all 4 in the first year. Would be nice, of course.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:56:10):    Did a bunch more Broken Shore quests and other world quests, getting enough curious coins for the War Turtle; after waiting a few days, it appeared at the vendor, so now it's in my possession!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:57:05):    And after doing some world quests for the Kirin Tor emissary, I got my other new pet, the Wondrous Wisdomball, which is basically a floating bubble with Khadgar's face, giving some pre-set answers to questions similar to one of those 8-ball things.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:58:36):    Also in the broken shore, I visited the Sentinax a few times, getting the achievement for using the summoning beacons in each area of the island. I also got an achievement for one of the world quests there, making my way through a maze on one of the ships without losing my wyrmtongue disguise.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:00:47):    I also got my feral Class Artifact Challenge done! Getting a new appearance for my catform. Lot easier than the guardian challenge I tried last week, and I got feral done in only 5 tries. This allows me to work on the secondary variations for the class challenge appearances, without needing any of the other primaries. So now I can postpone guardian and the others until later in the expansion without missing out; any secondaries I unlock for feral will also be available for the other specs.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:01:10):    Got my first of those already, killing Kil'jaeden on heroic difficulty, which we got done again tonight :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:02:46):    Finally, completed the questline for the Found Memento, Varian's compass which I gave to Anduin, unlocking some escort quests and a new cinematic at the end. Quite an emotional story!
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:04:32):    And that's my report for the week!
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:07:22):    Oh, one more browser game... just thought I'd mention that I'm making some serious progress in the Cookie Clicker idle-game, for those of you who remember that one. Resets and prestige upgrades are following rapidly, and I'm only lacking 7 more. Worked my way through the entire heaven/hell series of upgrades, and that with that done, from now on every upgrade will be quite a bit more expensive than the previous, and any that I've gotten before.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:07:52):    I've no idea how long the last stretch will take, but I do feel like the finishline (as far as it exists in this game) is somewhere on the horizon ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:08:03):    Which usually means a new update is soon to come, but I can dream!
Ar-Pharazon-V (04:22:53):    Namarie, transcript to come tomorrow!
Varda Valar (04:23:06):    Thank you. Namarie!
