Varda Valar (23:08:17):    Web:
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:08:17):    Ugh, we just upgraded this one...
Varda Valar (23:08:25):    Aye
Varda Valar (23:08:36):    Just let him know about that.
Varda Valar (23:08:40):    Just now
Varda Valar (23:09:55):    [Kinship] Galdorindel: I Discord would be ideal. Besides the meetings, a transcript would be easy to do, just copy-paste. And we could use it for voice on raids and etc, and for chatting when not ingame. It's a really great software.
Varda Valar (23:11:23):    Has anyolne besides me tried Discord? [Note: Varda's previous download was alpha from 2015. Much improved since then.)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:11:33):    In my experience, the chat function on voice-focused programs is not very userfriendly. But I haven't tried it.
Arien V (23:12:02):    yes i have]
Arien V (23:12:35):    i find it quite good actually and its the users choice wheter they want to use the voice function or not
Varda Valar (23:12:40):    Arien, did it seem to have a good spot for typing?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:13:09):    I really dislike the chat system in Skype, for example.
Varda Valar (23:15:54):    Arien, you've used both Skype and Discord. What do you think?
Varda Valar (23:16:09):    as a possible meeting place?
Arien V (23:16:12):    from what i see there is a server name which in our case would be "Valar Guild* .. into this server we can invite our friends which would show as members of this server group and it shows whethere they are online or not .. if signed onto discord it usually shows as well which game they are playing at the moment if they are gaming at all of course
Arien V (23:16:44):    it has text channels or voice channels
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:16:48):    How performance-heavy is it? AIM is rather light, Skype is rather heavy.
Arien V (23:16:54):    we would be using the text channels
Arien V (23:17:31):    what do you mean with performance-heavy?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:17:43):    Whether it bogs down your computer.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:17:51):    Memory, processing power, flashy displays...
Arien V (23:18:09):    nah it doesnt cause lag or anything of that kind ^^
Elladan (23:18:35):    if you have a system that a chat program bogs down your system, yeh might wanna think about upgrading :P
Arien V (23:18:37):    or causes the computer to run slow .. i havent had any trouble with it anyway
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:18:37):    When I was still using Skype I had to turn it off to play certain more heavy games.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:18:59):    So if we use Discord, I'd hope it was a bit better :)
Arien V (23:19:01):    i ve gotr it open at the moment
Arien V (23:19:34):    i mean we d have to try it out and and each would have to look individually probably
Varda Valar (23:19:42):    Is Discord less heavy than Skype?
Arien V (23:19:49):    easy yeah
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:19:58):    Well, that's good then.
Varda Valar (23:21:30):    From Giil-galad: And it doesn't have any of Skype's security worries
Varda Valar (23:24:41):    Here's the site:
Varda Valar (23:24:44):    https://discordapp.com/
Varda Valar (23:25:25):    Here's their comparison:
Varda Valar (23:25:27):    https://discordapp.com/features
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:27:14):    With so many checkmarks I get the feeling it's a bit biased.. but it does look good.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:28:03):    Like, there's a lot of features it *could* have that it doesn't have which would make it look bad so they leave it out of the comparison. But I can't think of any :)
Varda Valar (23:28:15):    [Kinship] Galdorindel: But yeah, I think it's the best program for guilds or comunities in general, by far.
Varda Valar (23:28:34):    Main thing is figuring which features we want.
Varda Valar (23:28:45):    We can mess with it, see how it goes, and still have AIM
Varda Valar (23:30:18):    [Kinship] Galdorindel: I keep Discord open all the time, no worries.
Varda Valar (23:30:30):    We can mute it.
Varda Valar (23:30:54):    What say we try it, and keep AIM too, and see how it goes as a side thing?
Varda Valar (23:31:05):    If we prefer it, we can switch. If not, we don't.
Varda Valar (23:31:17):    [Kinship] Galdorindel: You can mute the whole room, individuals channels within the room, mute notifications, etc
Varda Valar (23:31:54):    Right now, we have to pay for Ventrilo. Irmo and I do that.
Varda Valar (23:32:16):    We split the cost, but Irmo has been doing most of the cost.
Varda Valar (23:34:54):    From Gil-galad: But the paiod features are just fluff, nothing really essential
Varda Valar (23:36:39):    https://discordapp.com/nitro This gives sub info if you want the extra fluff.
Varda Valar (23:36:58):    Those extra things are on the top of the menu, if you want to look around
Varda Valar (23:37:14):    [Kinship] Galdorindel: Oh, and you can set a nickname per server, so I could be Gil-Galad regardless of my discord account name ;)
Varda Valar (23:37:48):    [Kinship] Galdorindel: So we would have a room, "Valar Guild" for example. Inside this room, we can set up a series of channel, so things don't get mixed up: a Lotro channel, a Wow channel, general talk, a channel only for the Sundays meetings, etc.
Varda Valar (23:38:15):    [Kinship] Galdorindel: And those are just text chat rooms. Then we would have the voice rooms, that you just enter when you need to use it.
Arien V (23:38:33):    and this link here shows the features compared to other applications :
Arien V (23:38:39):    https://discordapp.com/features
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:39:03):    seems okay though I've rather gotten to like having general chat and meeting chat in the same room :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:39:18):    Despite having to cut through the transcript because of it.
Varda Valar (23:40:02):    We can still do both in the same room. It's not as if we have a ton of people in here anyway.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:40:10):    hehe
Varda Valar (23:43:36):    Ok, I'm trying the download for Windows, not public test.
Varda Valar (23:43:44):    Thought I had it already.
Varda Valar (23:44:51):    it does say welcome back
Varda Valar (23:45:00):    updated I guess
Varda Valar (23:47:18):    weird key thing when I ask for a new password
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:50:57):    I'll let you try it, and if you like it, I'll install it somewhere during the week ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:51:18):    Well, if you want to try it for meetings. I see no point in installing another chat program if you don't.
Varda Valar (23:56:35):    I'm trying to find my old password or how to use this key thing they sent.
Monday, May 15, 2017
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:00:32):    Hm, I need to find someone over here with a US Amazon account... Warcraft magazine issue 5 is up quite cheaply, it's the only thing I couldn't find digitally and has some really interesting lore.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:00:50):    Found nowhere else.
Varda Valar (00:01:10):    Seems as if Amazon would want your money. Like they might let you set up a US account?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:01:21):    Well, some of it got copied over to the 2015 Annual, but there's still a lot of unique stuff.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:01:35):    Possibly, but apparently it's a hassle and I don't have a creditcard either :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:02:03):    I employed someone in WoW to get the Annual for me some time ago from the UK version, and then paid her in cash when we met :)
Varda Valar (00:09:42):    I'll just have to try this later. Complicated things by it being a download, not remembering the password, and the pass it sent is a "temporal key" that needs another app to unlock.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:09:51):    Ouch.
Varda Valar (00:10:05):    and it gives a huge mass of possible apps, I don't have any idea which to pick.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:10:05):    Need to talk to the bronze dragonflight for temporal keys!
Varda Valar (00:10:15):    Agreed. :)
Varda Valar (00:10:34):    ok, I'll try to figure it all out later.
Varda Valar (00:11:00):    So, we have Phar and me, Arien is kind of here. Anyone else present?

Varda Valar (00:11:15):    Web: [continued]
Arien V (00:11:30):    meep
Varda Valar (00:11:33):    I didn't put up anything new, but we have some things in the works.
Varda Valar (00:11:38):    Hiya Roadrunner :)

Varda Valar (00:11:45):    Gaming:
Varda Valar (00:12:10):    O wait. In membership:

Varda Valar (00:41:56):    Tolkien:
Varda Valar (00:42:57):    Relationships in Middle-earth. The various couples trying to get together or already together are not all the same. Can we think of a few?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:44:02):    Sam and Rosie, Aragorn and Arwen, Faramir and Eowyn, Beren and Luthien, Thingol and Melian..
Varda Valar (00:44:09):    Aragorn and Arwen. Faramir and Eowyn. Celeborn and Galadriel. Imrahil and Nimrodel.
Varda Valar (00:45:48):    Earendil and Elwing. Elrond and Celebrian.
Varda Valar (00:45:57):    Wow, we're coming up with quite a few.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:46:02):    Tuor and.. Idril, was it?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:46:24):    Turin and Finduilas, Turin and Nienor..
Varda Valar (00:48:49):    Finrod and Amarie. Oh, and yes for Tuor and Idril.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:49:13):    Eol and Aredhel?
Varda Valar (00:49:30):    Gwindor and Finduilas. Turin and Finduilas.
Varda Valar (00:50:27):    Maeglin and Idril, as well as Tuor and Idril.
Varda Valar (00:50:52):    Aye on Eol and Eredhel.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:51:09):    Arathorn and Gilraen
Varda Valar (00:51:48):    Turgon and Elenwe
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:52:42):    Hurin and Morwen
Arien V (00:53:25):    Arien and Silpion :)?
Arien V (00:53:32):    he wished anyway?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:53:55):    Pharazon and Miriel, Finwe and Miriel, Finwe and Indis
Varda Valar (00:54:04):    :) Aye, it's still a relationship, even if rocky.
Arien V (00:54:19):    Faramir and Eowyn
Varda Valar (00:55:16):    Fingolfin and Lalwende / Irime
Arien V (00:56:15):    Celeborn and Galadriel
Varda Valar (00:57:33):    Feanor and Nerdanel
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:58:07):    Are we just naming couples, or talking about each as well? :)
Varda Valar (01:00:18):    Finwe with Miriel and Indis.
Varda Valar (01:00:47):    The intention was to show how JRRT showed different types of relationships, not all cut from the same cloth.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:00:48):    Well if we're going to repeat each other's mentions we'll be here all night ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:00:54):    Oh yes. Some weren't even mutual.
Varda Valar (01:01:00):    Beren and Luthien surely mentioned by now?
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:01:06):    Yeah, mentioned em near the start I think.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:01:12):    So I did.

Varda Valar (01:01:15):    Ok, so what sorts of relationships did he show?
Varda Valar (01:01:51):    Some were very dear to each other, with great sacrfice and work to stay together such as Beren and Luthien.
Varda Valar (01:01:59):    Aragorn and Arwen.
Varda Valar (01:02:35):    Some were convenience at least on one side.
Varda Valar (01:02:54):    Such as?
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:03:30):    I suppose it felt somewhat convenient for Aredhel, but real love wasn't there.
Varda Valar (01:03:50):    Right. Just for convenience.
Varda Valar (01:04:04):    Staying alive is a convenience, heh.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:04:16):    Eowyn possibly liked Aragorn more because he could've been her ticket out of her female-only role, rather than because of him.
Varda Valar (01:05:15):    Mithrellas married Imrazon, also to stay alive. She gave him two children and left when she had the chance.
Varda Valar (01:05:33):    Aragorn was more of an ideal than a person, also, to her.
Varda Valar (01:07:30):    It's hard to tell between Celeborn and Galadriel. It was likely love at first, but I'm not sure later. She was quite ready to go back to Valinor with or without him. Maybe she figured she only had to be patient and he'd end up there eventually.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:07:48):    Well, for most elves it was inevitable :)
Varda Valar (01:08:53):    Celeborn didn't just give up Middle-earth to run off with Galadriel. Took a long time for him to be willing.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:09:12):    I suppose he figured, for his part, that she'd still be there when he arrived.
Varda Valar (01:09:27):    But Imrahil was willing to jump off the ship to Valinor to try to go back for Nimrodel.
Varda Valar (01:09:35):    Aye
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:09:45):    Youngsters. Less patient.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:10:07):    And yet again, by the end they would've met in Valinor anyway.
Arien V (01:10:18):    Amrod Varda ? wasnt it?
Varda Valar (01:10:43):    ?
Arien V (01:10:48):    who jumped off the ship and drowned?
Varda Valar (01:11:00):    Amrod oops
Varda Valar (01:11:16):    Amroth
Varda Valar (01:11:23):    Dol Amroth was named for him
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:11:39):    Amroth, that was it.
Arien V (01:11:47):    Amroth aye :) spelling .. i knew you meant him :)
Varda Valar (01:11:57):    Between us we can get it. :) Thank you
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:12:02):    Y'know, it kinda takes the tragedy out of some elf romances when you realize they will end up in Valinor together after all.
Varda Valar (01:12:34):    Celeborn and Galadriel were quite able to handle a long separation. Amroth was not.
Varda Valar (01:13:15):    True. The tragedy was when one would become mortal and one did not.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:13:25):    yep
Varda Valar (01:14:04):    So Finrod refusing to marry Amarie because he would die in Middle-earth, although eventually he'd get back to Valinor... She might marry someone in Valinor while he's over yonder.
Varda Valar (01:14:53):    We don't know if she thought it was a good idea to wait for him. He took a risk.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:14:51):    That's a risk, yes.
Varda Valar (01:15:24):    and divorce wasn't normal for elves.
Varda Valar (01:15:34):    So if she chose another, that was it
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:15:38):    So he gave her an option to get out.
Varda Valar (01:16:13):    Aye - it was liable to be a seriously long wait.
Varda Valar (01:16:22):    My guess is she waited.
Varda Valar (01:17:16):    (I'm a romantic. What is this pragmatism of which people speak? :) )
Varda Valar (01:18:11):    Humans also would meet again, and much sooner than elves due to longevity.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:18:17):    I remember a webcomic wherein the unaging elves did not have the concept of eternal love, because you'd get sick of each other eventually. The closest feeling they had was when one of the pair died before the romance was over.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:18:23):    that's a rather darker view on it :)
Varda Valar (01:18:29):    True
Varda Valar (01:18:46):    Sounds as if wasn't true love.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:19:24):    Sounds as if true love did not happen for them because there was no growing old together and eventually the small things would bother you more than you accepting them.
Varda Valar (01:19:41):    Maybe they needed some distance at times.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:19:52):    It really is a view on love that we humans can't relate to, but it makes a kind of sense :)
Varda Valar (01:20:12):    Get a break. Learn "not to sweat the small stuff".
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:20:16):    yep :)
Varda Valar (01:20:35):    Seems as if they would learn workarounds over that length of time.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:20:44):    You'd think so.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:20:59):    low birthrate too, so few kids to bond over or to stay together for
Varda Valar (01:21:40):    My husband and I were college sweethearts, and will both be 64 this year. We get more bonded over time, it seems like.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:22:11):    Ah, but try getting to 6400 year :)
Varda Valar (01:22:16):    Some joke that being together can become a habit, and just uncomfortable without the familiarity. That's not us, but you can see it.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:22:15):    *years
Varda Valar (01:22:19):    Ok. :)
Varda Valar (01:22:24):    I'd love to. :)
Varda Valar (01:22:42):    But aye, it doesn't work like that for everyone, for sure.
Varda Valar (01:23:48):    Authors will put in their experiences, including JRRT, as you showed very well there.
Varda Valar (01:24:07):    One of JRRT's abilities was to see a wide range of relationships, not just his own.
Varda Valar (01:24:35):    He had to be paying good attention to what was happening to other couples around him.
Varda Valar (01:24:56):    Teaching school let him see a ton of relationships, too. :) All sorts of drama.
Varda Valar (01:25:06):    College age folk.
Varda Valar (01:25:24):    Any additions anyone would like to make to the topic?
Varda Valar (01:26:10):    We barely touched on it, but I think we're about done for the night anyway. :)
Varda Valar (01:26:36):    *picks up a hammer from the conveyor belt going through the shelf*
Varda Valar (01:26:46):    *ting tonk!*
Varda Valar (01:27:05):    *the hammer split in two when it hit, to give a double sound, then reformed*
Varda Valar (01:27:22):    *replaces the hammer on the shelf where it looks again like one hammer*

Varda Valar (01:27:26):    After-meeting!
Arien V (01:27:37):    Thank you :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:27:48):    *inspects* seamless too...
Varda Valar (01:28:26):    And thank you to Sauron and Fangorn for all the snacks and lovely meal while I'm supposed to be typing at the computer. May have to do a lot of running after this wonderful Mother's Day. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:28:59):    That's what holidays are for, put on the pounds, give you something to do later.
Varda Valar (01:29:12):    haha
Varda Valar (01:29:53):    Luckily none of the food was of the dessert variety, but wow, what chefs we have here.
Varda Valar (01:30:22):    Will scroll back in a bit to see what wild things folk said whilst I was away. ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:31:02):    Not from me for a bit, actually, gonna see if I can still catch my friend in Heroes of the Storm before he goes to sleep.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:31:09):    I'll give my gaming report afterwards.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:31:24):    We're really running quite late :)
Varda Valar (01:32:53):    aye, we are. Sorry
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:33:07):    I blame Discord ;)
Varda Valar (01:33:18):    A lot was away from the window. Like trying to figure out what's going on with Discord.
Varda Valar (01:33:29):    Appropriate name. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:33:32):    Discord always makes me think of the MLP character.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:33:41):    Basically a dragon-like version of Q from Star Trek.
Varda Valar (01:33:47):    Or the goddess of Discord, Eris.
Varda Valar (01:33:56):    o no! :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:34:03):    Ah yes! Discord the goddess was also a character in the Hercules/Xena franchise.
Varda Valar (01:34:44):    They did help people learn some mythology. :)
Varda Valar (01:34:51):    Run while you can!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:34:53):    haha, yes
Varda Valar (01:35:04):    Think I'd better restart the computer.
Varda Valar (01:35:07):    Namarie for now!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:35:06):    silly gods and their games with humanity...
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:35:09):    namarie!
Arien V (01:40:00):    Namarie for now :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:40:06):    namarie
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:29:30):    Alrighty, gaming report!

Ar-Pharazon-V (02:35:57):    Flashgaming:
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:36:27):    http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/doodle_history is the first game! Drag the objects made of tons of line-pieces to the right angle to create famous historical buildings. Nice music too!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:48:42):    http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/mathsweeper is a variant on minesweeper, whereby each block has either the number of mines underneath that's written on the block, or none.
Elladan (03:08:55):    long day
Elladan (03:09:05):    I cannot wait to get into my own place.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:09:09):    hey :)
Elladan (03:09:19):    hello :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:10:26):    For the third flashgame I'll give http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/transcube which is a platformer with lemmings-elements, whereby you sacrifice your character in various ways to give respawns a way to continue.

Ar-Pharazon-V (03:17:20):    Now, blizzard gaming!
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:18:10):    Heroes of the Storm: Level 187 now, including a new level on Nova because of the brawl this week, with featured 5 novas vs 5 novas in a game of hide and seek, with insta-kill snipe ability.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:18:45):    Fun, quick games, and a loot chest as reward after doing 3 :) Good thing I already did it for the portrait some time ago, because they only give the loot chests now.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:19:22):    Got a few nice new skins from loot chests, including a Sin'dorei ranger Sylvanas.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:20:09):    Diablo 3: Done all the bounty acts, and leveling my way through rifts now, though I've not had much time. I think I'm level 36 or something.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:22:47):    Hearthstone: Just plodding along, some classes now halfway to the next level, and a few further behind. This week's brawl is the 100th brawl, with each class associated with a different brawl.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:23:24):    WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:35:19):    Not much news when it comes to raiding. No new stuff in Northrend, no new bosses killed in Nighthold because we're not doing mythic (yet?). Got my fourth quest item from Elisande, which unlocks the teleporters in heroic difficulty, as well as giving me a new necklace which is pretty good for catspec.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:36:29):    This week's weekly quest is doing 4 mythic dungeons, for which I have not yet had time (was watching Eurovision this week) but we cleared the Nighthold in 2 raids so are now planning to do them on tuesday, so that's fine.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:37:30):    Still doing world quests. Finally got the last fishing world quest I was after, Work Order: Queenfish, so now I've done all the fishing WQs and got a new achievement for it :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:38:22):    Some other new world quests encountered as well; I have now done every Kirin Tor quest in every zone, for example, even the ones I suspect were not active in the game until last patch.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:39:29):    Couple of pet masters fought too, because I'm still planning on doing all the 150 different family/petmaster match-ups, beyond what was needed for the achievement.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:40:22):    And of course I've been collecting more marks of honor from the WQs as well. Not enough for the first arsenal yet, but getting closer.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:44:04):    Suramar questing has been rather slow this week, though I did do a couple of side quests, including the quests for the jeweler in the southwest part of the city. Interesting little story there.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:44:52):    For appearances, I bought the Dreamwalker bracers from the Black Market Auction House, for a rather cheap 14k gold. The rest of the set is no doubt going to be a lot more expensive, but I'll see what pieces I can get.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:45:38):    I also continued with old appearances, clearing normal Durnholde items after some gruelling repetitions because even at instant killing speed the entire thing takes about 15 minutes a run.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:46:33):    But today I got to switch to heroic difficulty, getting 3 out of 7 items already, as well as the hat-toy from Don Carlos which is only available in heroic. So it's going well!
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:47:55):    And I'll finish the report by saying the balloon ride micro-holiday was this week. Various zones (mostly in Broken Isles) gave a tour by balloon across the zone, with trivia questions to answer about the zone. You need to wait until 3 players have queued up though, so for some zones it could be a long wait. Still fun though!
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:48:23):    But no permanent rewards, so you don't miss anything long-term if you skipped it.
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:48:30):    And that's my report for this week!
Ar-Pharazon-V (04:09:54):    time to make a transcript
