Tolkien:
Varda Valar: Please whisper me if you have a Tolkien topic, question,
or Tolkien Moment.
Varda Valar: Topic 1
Varda Valar: Do we see Gandalf changing his technique in aiding the
free people of Middle-earth, as Olorin, the Grey, and the White? Does
anything stay the same?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Grabs the spotlight a bit more as white.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Also, he has a horse.
Varda Valar: Free for everyone to jump in, in case you're wondering.
Easy to separate talking in chat.
Erkenbrand has entered the room.
Varda Valar: Greetings.
Eonwe Valar: Olorin didn't appear much to those he inspired, as I
recall. A bit harder to whisper in someone's ear when you're in an
old-guy-suit.
Eru: Between the Grey and White versions, he became more direct,
probably due to both urgency of the coming war and being more powerful
than before.
Arien V: Greetings
Erkenbrand: Aiya!
Varda Valar: Is that you, Erk?
Erkenbrand: yup! does it still have an email address for me?
Arien V: we only see an email adress yes
Varda Valar: Yes, until just then
Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya!
Erkenbrand: hmmmm, it reads Erkenbrand for me, any suggestions on how
to fix that?
Varda Valar: I see Erkenbrand now. Just the email when you first
entered and on the side list. [Note:
Actual names showing for two members and the one showing an email are
edited in the transcript for their privacy with an easy find and
replace. Phar's AIM is an old version that doesn't see quite like some
of the others, but has a very clean copy that we appreciate, easily
fixed. Feel free to stay!]
Eonwe Valar: Should bea way to change your displayed name.
Varda Valar: We just started the Tolkien topic:
Varda Valar: Do we see Gandalf changing his technique in aiding the
free people of Middle-earth, as Olorin, the Grey, and the White? Does
anything stay the same?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Still gives the email for me.
Ar-Pharazon-V: He's still on the side of the free people, that stays
the same.
Varda Valar: Aye
Varda Valar: Unlike for some of the other Istari.
Varda Valar: Radagast seems to have been more interested in aiding the
animals, especially birds.
Varda Valar: Saruman was out for Saruman
Eru: And still devoted to his task and seeing it through (Gandalf)
Varda Valar: Aye
Varda Valar: As Olorin, he went unseen among the elves whispering words
of encouragement. They didn't generally realize he was there.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, if they're not going to allow him to stay dead (or
come back to Valinor) he might as well get it done.
Varda Valar: heh
Varda Valar: What was his technique as the Grey?
Eru: Radagast became too rooted in his Middle Earth form, there's no
record of him returning to Valinor after the War of the Ring.
Varda Valar: Saruman seems to have been refused re-entry, blown away by
the West wind.
Eru: Yes, he would have been expelled into the Void with other fallen
Ainur.
Varda Valar: We might not have been told about Radagast, as outside the
Ring story?
Ar-Pharazon-V: No record of him staying.
Varda Valar: And we don't know the fate of Alatar and Pallando, the
Blue Wizards.
Ar-Pharazon-V: He may not have liked what became of the world after,
the forests, the birds and beasts...
Ar-Pharazon-V: I'm sure he was affected by the passing away of the
rings that way.
Eru: If they weren't mentioned returning to Valinor, they probably
either did the same as Radagast (becoming lost in their guise in Middle
Earth) or became like Saurman and sought to rule those around them.
Eru: The Maiar weren't affected by the existence of the rings of power.
Varda Valar: Might be interesting if the Blue Wizards tried to upgrade
the lives of those around them. We don't have to assume they went bad.
Eru: Then why wouldn't they return to Valinor?
Eru: Once their mission was complete.
Varda Valar: They might have.
Varda Valar: But maybe they didn't feel it was yet complete, if they
wanted to continue working with those harmed by the Ring, as in Harad?
Eru: Well yes, we just don't have any mention of it. They all
arrived at the Grey Havens but the only record is of Gandalf going back
that way.
Ar-Pharazon-V: There's a lot we don't know about the fourth age, they
might have gotten about a bit.
Varda Valar: Gandalf was in the Ring story and a Ring-bearer himself.
The others we saw very little or not at all.
Varda Valar: Saruman may have corrupted the Blue Wizards, rather than
making them think they had important work over there that kept them out
of his way.
Varda Valar: They had no reason yet to disbelieve him.
Eru: Cirdan clearly saw something speical in Gandalf as he gave him
Narya and not the leader of the Istari, Saruman.
Eru: *special
Varda Valar: Aye to that!
Varda Valar: Galadriel and Varda saw Gandalf as the best, also.
Eru: One of the themes in Arda is the Ainur becoming rooted in their
forms. The more acts they carry out in those forms (especially if
evil), the more they are tied to them. This happened to Melkor,
Sauron, the Balrogs, etc.
Eru: So I'd think it's likely this happened to Radagast and the two
blues. They become too close to that which they are drawn by
their theme.
Varda Valar: Gandalf the Grey showed up as all the Istari, as an old
man, intended to be an advisor rather then a leader. The Free People
needed to learn to handle their problems, to grow, by fighting Sauron
on their own.
Ar-Pharazon-V: The Istari chose their rooted forms, though, to work
better with the free peoples and not be tempted to do all the work
themselves.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Right :-)
Erkenbrand (Erkenbrand) has left the room.
Eru: Yes.
Varda Valar: Eru, that sounds likely
Ar-Pharazon-V: Perhaps they became spiritually rooted in addition to
bodily rooted, then. Too attached to their current form and life.
Eru: And yes, their forms were chosen as advisors, inspirational, not
leaders.
Varda Valar: Melian somehow managed to dodge that bullet. If Thingol
had remained, I wonder what would have happened to her.
Eru: He was the only thing tying her to Middle Earth.
Varda Valar: She had a daughter and a kingdom, but the daughter was
gone too.
Eru: Yes, Luthien had gone by then.
Varda Valar: So, that sounds right.
Ar-Pharazon-V: It does require an anchor point, then, so to speak.
Eru: And then there's Tom and Goldberry, they seem very rooted in their
form and location.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Perhaps for Radagast, that was the wild itself.
Ar-Pharazon-V: What would Tom have done if Goldberry was lost?
Eru: Sing!
Eonwe Valar: It's been a while since I thumbed through the Histories,
but I got the impression that is more because they wanted to be able to
act more upon the world, and having a physical form was part of that.
Morgoth became more personally invested in his form. I don't recall
getting the impression that for the Valar their forms were more to them
than clothing is to us, as the Sil describes it.
Eru: But seriously, it's hard to say.
Varda Valar: Maybe Tom would have moved to Valinor. He would not have
liked to remain in that small space constantly reminded of loss.
Eru: Yes Eonwe.
Varda Valar: Aye, the forms were clothing to the Valar and Maiar.
Eru: Merely a vehicle to interact with the world. After they saw
the Elves they clothed themselves in forms more humanoid.
Eonwe Valar: Aye.
Varda Valar: The forms followed the way they thought, so we see them as
they are, in a lot of ways. :-)
Eru: Yes they were themed.
Ar-Pharazon-V: And their thoughts follow the way they're formed,
eventually.
Varda Valar: True, Ulmo could appear as a great wave, or more humanoid
for speech with the free people.
Eru: Yes they more they do in those forms, the harder it is to break
out of them it seems.
Varda Valar: Also, Morgth put a lot of his power into the planet
itself, his Ring. Also he added his power to his followers. That left
less for his own use.
Eru: I wonder if Olorin stayed in Gandalf form once they arrived back
in Valinor? Might have been a bit of an eye opener for Bilbo and Frodo
to see him unveiled.
Eonwe Valar: We only really see that in Morgoth and Sauron, who were
expending their power in the attempt to control and dominate the
Peoples of Arda.
Varda Valar: Oh, that would have been an interesting unveiling!
Varda Valar: We also know that over time those following Morgoth and
Morgoth himself lost the power of flight that they originally had.
Eru: Yes, Melkor invested so much in his realm that he lost power and
couldn't even rise into the heavens again to stop Arien.
Varda Valar: So those that attacked Tilion in the air later could not
do it.
Varda Valar: Might explain flightless Balrogs? :-)
Eru: Yes, perhaps.
Varda Valar: Gandalf the White had lost his old man form of the Grey
and had to be reclothed. What was different when he was sent back?
Eonwe Valar: Based on Letters, as I recall it was that Eru had sent him
back, first of all.
Eru: He looked more like Christopher Lee?
Varda Valar: heh
Eonwe Valar: Hehe
Varda Valar: And sounded more like him too. :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Could mask his voice to - yes, that.
Eru: Aye.
Varda Valar: He had taken the wizard position of the White, the leader
of the Istari, able to break Saruman's staff as symbol of his loss.
Eonwe Valar: Being the last Istari standing, so to speak, he was
allowed more freedom to stand against the Shadow.
Varda Valar: Aye
Eru: I wonder if part of the Istari was in their staff (a much lesser
version of Sauron putting most of himself in the One Ring), they seem
to be a significant item, or perhaps they were just a focus to use
their power.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Or perhaps they just really liked symbolism.
Varda Valar: A focus possibly. A symbol at the very least. Perhaps a
Valinor connection.
Varda Valar: Defnitely a sign of rank or Saruman's staff could have
been left alone?
Varda Valar: It seemed to be a necessary act.
Eonwe Valar: Interesting, but would the Valar do that with their
messengers given the connection to Sauron it could have?
Varda Valar: and all that was left of his power was mainly his Voice,
and that was lessened.
Varda Valar: It might only work for that one Wizard.
Varda Valar: DNA coding. :-)
Varda Valar: Maybe a part of the form they took?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Voice recognition.
Eru: It's certainly keyed to them in some way, probably both symbolic
and focus.
Varda Valar: Likely
Varda Valar: Gandalf the White was no longer just an advisor, as the
Grey was. What was different?
Eru: He was more of a leader, taking proactive action instead of
reactive. I guess they felt he had to nudge the Free People's a
bit more forcefully.
Varda Valar: As you said earlier, he was the last Istar to be actively
serving.
Varda Valar: He had to take the place of five.
Varda Valar: Aye, so he could take direct action, such as sending light
against Nazgul attacking Faramir and his party.
Eonwe Valar: He was still advising. He didn't force Theoden to march to
Minas Tirith. He took action against forces beyond the strength of
those involved, but he didn't do *all* of the work.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Also, he might have figured it was now or never anyway.
Not much to do for him if he lets Sauron take over.
Varda Valar: Aye, Eonwe
Eonwe Valar: He freed Theoden from the influence of Saruman via
Wormtongue, but he didn't kick Theoden off the throne and assume
command. That would've been counter to everything he was working for.
Varda Valar: Heh. Interesting. But they did say if the Free People fell
against Sauron, he would have Arda for an immensely long time.
Apparently they could let it happen if the people didn't wake up and do
their part.
Eru: Yes that wouldn't have been in keeping with his mission at all.
Varda Valar: One thing to remember about the Istari is that all of them
had had part of their memory and power removed.
Varda Valar: If they had kept all of their memories, I wonder if they,
especially Saruman, would have acted differently?
Eonwe Valar: He rallied forces to come in and aid Helm's Deep when it
might've otherwise been lost. he tried to rally and prepare Denethor as
well. Gandalf rode out to chase away the Nazgul and bring Faramir back
to the Halls of healing, he stood against the Lord of the Nazgul to bar
the entrance to Minas Tirith,..
Eru: Yes they were limited so to be less overpowering. The memory
part could have been to stop them yearning for Valinor as much, and
focus on their task.
Varda Valar: Ahh, helping focus without homesickness.
Varda Valar: Good summary, Eonwe
Eru: Ah! Alas I have to go, namarie all, see you next time!
Varda Valar: Namarie!
Eru (eru68) has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: Take care Eru :}
Varda Valar: We've also pretty well wrapped up the subject. :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie Eru!
Varda Valar: Any other comments? And feel free to add more during the
next section if they come to mind. :-)
Varda Valar: *catches a hammer flying by above the conveyor/shelf*
Varda Valar: *it hums as it comes down on the hammerpad*
Varda Valar: *the hammerpad hums in harmony*
Varda Valar: *music breaks out from all the utensils around us*
Varda Valar: *returns the hammerpad and we have a pleasantly happy
silence*
top
Varda Valar: After-meetoing!
Varda Valar: Free chat. :-)
Eonwe Valar: Of course we *all* know Gandalf should've just claimed the
Ring. Then he could've fixed everything! I forsee absolutely no
problems with giving any finite being that much power.
Varda Valar: I did see Erkenbrand as the first name, then the email as
the parentheses name after it on the side. Erkenbrand when he talked.
Varda Valar: heh
Varda Valar: Gandalf figured it would be a bad idea. :-)
Eonwe Valar: Eh, what does he know :}
Varda Valar: Just think, Gandalf could have come back with all his
power and mopped Mordor witth the weakened, Ringless Sauron.
Varda Valar: Aragorn and Frodo could have just sat at home.
Eonwe Valar: :}
Varda Valar: You can bet that thought crossed minds.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Frodo's, probably ;-)
Varda Valar: Frodo was pretty bright.
Eonwe Valar: Exactly, then the White Army that came up to the Shire to
order it "for its own good" would arrive to help those silly Hobbits
learn how to help out in the wider world!
Varda Valar: Chefs and farmers everywhere!
Varda Valar: Be lucky if they got paid.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Paid? Why? It's for the good of all, that should be
reward enough!
Varda Valar: There you go!
Eonwe Valar: Nobody gets paid! Everyone gets just what they need to
survive. Of course some need more to survive than others...
Varda Valar: Cooking and farming would have turned mediocre soon after.
Then who needs hobbits?
Varda Valar: The elite need lots to be able to watch over everyone, of
course.
Varda Valar: Sure glad Gandalf didn't take that Ring that Frodo offered
him.
Varda Valar: Frodo's offering the Ring to Gandalf and Galadriel tested
both of them, probably part of the behind the scenes purpose.
Varda Valar: f
Varda Valar: Forced Gandalf to think about it early on, before he had
time to want it even more.
Eonwe Valar: Probably. They both realized it. Frodo probably was just
trying to get out of the tough work :}
Varda Valar: Might have saved him from going the way of the other
Istari.
Varda Valar: Frodo could probably see it would be the death of him, and
others could surely handle the job better. He had some humility.
Eonwe Valar: Galadriel had already considered it, weighed the decision
apparently, but never had opportunity until Frodo showed up on her
doorstep.
Varda Valar: But he was the best Hobbit for the job.
Varda Valar: Aye, thinking about it and the actual temptation are
orders of magnitude different.
Eonwe Valar: Gandalf had to be pretty open-eyed about it because what
he was doing was likely to lead him right into its path.
Varda Valar: Hey, the Shire couldn't possibly be more than a vacation
spot. :-)
Eonwe Valar: :}
Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, it was certainly the best source of pipeweed.
Varda Valar: There you go. And they appreciated his fireworks. Didn't
keep askiing him to do huge Maia things. The elves knew him for a Maia.
Eonwe Valar: We *all* know the Shire didn't really come into existence
until Gandalf sent some Hobbits that way to pretty the place up. He
probably lived in a cave in what would become Bag End, and really just
wanted some housekeeping :}
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ooh, there's a thought.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Gandalf manipulating the entire history of the Shire
that way.
Varda Valar: heh, now we know.
Eonwe Valar: He had the Entwives train them first, of course....
Varda Valar: Not too far off. The Entwives taught gardening to humans
coming out of the East, escaping Morgoth.
Varda Valar: The Hobbits probably came right through there.
Eonwe Valar: It's been a while, but I think there's some lore
connection between Hobbits and Entwives I should remember.
Varda Valar: Might even be why the Entwives may have moved onwards to
the Shire area.
Ar-Pharazon-V: People being taught agriculture by trees. Interesting.
Eonwe Valar: I'd make a joke about plants knowing how plants should be
treated, but apparently even among plants (Ents vs Entwives) there was
disagreement.
Varda Valar: Definitely had walking trees by the Shire. Didnt' have to
be just huorns. And the Entwives would not have been in Old Man
Willow's deep forest.
Varda Valar: Let them grow free! Let them be domesticated!
Eonwe Valar: Wonder if Sauron promised the Entwives a Ring of Power...
"Now you'll be able to make all plants grow how you want them to!"
Varda Valar: So the Hobbits with their gardens would have been very
attractive to the Entwives.
Varda Valar: Have to wonder about that tree shading the cattle.
Varda Valar: Although I'm not sure what Entwives would have thought of
livestock. At least if they kept out of the gardens.
Eonwe Valar: Irony?
Varda Valar: Still, they were domesticated, not wild, and perhaps more
pleasing to their minds?
Varda Valar: Wild deer would have been more pleasing to the Ents.
Varda Valar: With such different mindsets, no wonder the Ents had
difficulty locating the Entwives. Who would ever go there, they both
think.
Ar-Pharazon-V: You'd think that after all those generations they'd at
least try to figure out how each other's minds worked.
Varda Valar: Mars and Venus? :-)
Varda Valar: Reunited at long last in the West. That could mean the
Shire, not just Valinor. I like to think that, anyway.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Heh, could be.
Varda Valar: Merry and Pippin finallllly tell Fangorn about the trees
that move around the Shire.
Varda Valar: Always bothered me that they left out that teeny bit of
info.
Varda Valar: Silly hobbitses.
Eonwe Valar (Eonwe Valar) has left the room.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, it was just one rumor in the Shire as I recall.
They might not even have heard it.. but then again they should've said
something about the Old Forest.
Eonwe Valar (Eonwe Valar) has entered the room.
Varda Valar: Um, save quick.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Hm?
Eonwe Valar: Got a save in, hehe.
Varda Valar: Eonwe did a crash. Back now.
Varda Valar: yay
Ar-Pharazon-V: ah :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiyata
Varda Valar: That was a quick Return of the Eonwe. :-)
Varda Valar: Guys, I need to go handle supper, but will happily scroll
to see what was said. (Got in a save, too.)
Elladan: I'm back too
Elladan: heating up dinner too
Eonwe Valar: :}
Eonwe Valar: I actually need to call it here :}
Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, good time for me to start my gaming report then.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie Eonwe!
Varda Valar: Namarie Eonwe!
Eonwe Valar: So, take care, good night, sleep well, and have fun :}
Elladan: namarie!
Eonwe Valar (Eonwe Valar) has left the room.
Elladan (Scott92027) has left the room.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Flashgaming!
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.kongregate.com/games/96brothers/adaran is the
first game, a running game. No plot that I can figure out, but you play
a devilish looking creature in some sort of hell environment, jumping
and throwing your weapon to get as far as possible.
Ar-Pharazon-V: I actually get quite far before figuring out I had a
weapon, and was just trying to avoid all the enemies ;-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/rogue_buddies is the
second, an action platformer, rather silly and macho, about a mercenary
who gets betrayed by his boss and needs to shoot his way through enemy
forces while rescuing his buddies. Couple of weapon upgrades and
cosmetic upgrades to be gotten.
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/lego_out_of_step is the
third game, guide a character through random platforms, collecting
coins and placing blocks, trampolines or rocks to get past obstacles.
Complete minor objectives as you go.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Diablo 3: Level 66 now, and finished all the anniversary
stuff. Got all the pages relatively easily by farming the Festering
Woods in Act I, and after that the biggest problem was getting 1
million gold to make a Wirt's Leg, which you need to salvage on the
path to getting another pet.
Ar-Pharazon-V: But while doing some bounties I ran into a Gilded Baron
treasure goblin, so that problem didn't last too long!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Heroes of the Storm: Tried out Lili a bit, seems
alright, using a serpent-based dpsy build. I also bought the Raider
Rexxar skin, which was on sale this week, which I had been waiting for
since it was introduced :-) Comes with a mechanized Misha!
Ar-Pharazon-V: This week's brawl is Starcraft-based, on the map with
the Zerg swarms, and only the Starcraft heroes, or heroes with a
Starcraft skin, are available as your 3 choices. Luckily I could choose
Zagara several times, and ended up winning 2 out of the 3 brawls.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone: Some tough quests this week, but hey,
that's just more gold. Some classes halfway to the next level now.
Ar-Pharazon-V: This week's brawl had you pick a class, getting a
fitting adventure boss in its place, and fighting an opponent with
another boss. A bit of luck required, but they do count as a win for
the class you chose, which was useful for quests.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, for Heroes of the Storm, also, worked on a few
rooster races. They were kinda tough if not nearly impossible, but
changes made in a later patch make them much easier to complete, and
getting 25 before the end of the Lunar Festival shouldn't be too hard.
Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V: A bit calmer this week. No new appearances unlocked,
though I did get my first Prestige level, and you need 2 Prestige
levels to get a new appearance.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Prestige is given when you reach Honor level 50, which I
got by a few more pvp arenas for world quests, and the weekly quest,
which was winning 4 battlegrounds.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Those world quests are going well, I've completed
Darkbrul Arena already and only need 4 to 6 of the other three.
Ar-Pharazon-V: *checks* 4 or 5, actually
Ar-Pharazon-V: With Prestige level 1 I also got a new pet, an Alliance
Enthusiast, which is basically a little banner-carrying demon that
makes some strange emotes like moving closer to you or taking a strand
of your hair. A bit creepy, really. But fun.
Ar-Pharazon-V: I also got another pet from Northrend raids, a Blood
Boil from Saurfang. A bit like the red oozes from Throne of Thunder,
and not very special. But still nice to have.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Other world quests I've been doing are the pet master
ones for the Family Familiar achievement, for which I'm also still
leveling pets. I still need to level almost 40 of them, so that might
take a while. If I need some pets early I'll throw some pet charms at
vendors for buying levelling stones, but that can get a bit expensive,
so I've also taken to doing any quests that give charms.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Doing world quests is going well for my reputation, I've
already gotten 4 out of 6 to revered, and the other 2 are not far
behind. Onward to exalted!
Ar-Pharazon-V: What else... old appearances! Gotten some new items from
Blackwing Lair this week, which just leaves one item, a cloak from
Chromaggus. Just doesn't want to drop, it seems.
Ar-Pharazon-V: For 5-mans I'm still in Heroic Blood Furnace. Only need
a dagger from the first boss, so at least the runs are fast :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: And finally, raiding:
Ar-Pharazon-V: Nighthold normal is progressing, we've gotten 8 out of
10 bosses down and have tried a few attempts at Elisande, leader of the
Nightborne. Seems an interesting fight, with temporal resets.
Ar-Pharazon-V: While raiding, and world-questing, I completed the
collection of 50 essences of aman'thul, and was able to upgrade my (at
that point) only legendary item from 910 to 940 with the reward.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Later tonight I also got my second legendary, the
Ekowraith, a legendary chestpiece which grabbed my attention from when
they were first announced. Even though it's been nerfed a bit since
then, it's still a massive upgrade.
Ar-Pharazon-V: I also have my 2-piece bonus for the new tier-set, so
that's more upgrades! Feeling quite strong now for raids.
Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for the week!
Arien V: well done :-)
