Varda Valar (23:58:23):    Tolkien:
Varda Valar (23:58:47):    If anyone has a suggestion, feel free to mention. Otherwise you get mine. :)
Varda Valar (23:58:54):    to quote Eonwe.
Varda Valar (23:59:30):    The picture of Nienor made me think of this one.
Varda Valar (00:00:02):    Who were some of the characters who were not all that "good" but were on the good side, at least more or less?
Monday, August 14, 2017
Varda Valar (00:00:40):    What made them seem less like good guys even though they may have fought against Sauron or Melkor?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:01:15):    If we're going by that definition, the house of Feanor comes to mind.
Varda Valar (00:01:29):    Aye. I had them very much in mind.
Varda Valar (00:02:04):    There were others too.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:02:05):    The oath, the kinslayings, often lacking the will to join up with the other good sides...
Varda Valar (00:03:50):    If a silmaril came into the picture, all other considerations went over the cliff.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:03:53):    Pretty much.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:04:23):    Thingol wasn't always a nice fellow.
Varda Valar (00:04:32):    Some of them seemed just plain unpleasant as personalities, too. Other Feanorians seemed pretty decent, just caught up in circumstance.
Varda Valar (00:04:51):    True. He sure didn't want a smelly wild human carrying off his daughter.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:05:05):    He wasn't happy about paying dwarves either.
Varda Valar (00:05:31):    When it came to the Nauglamir with the silmaril that was his in it, that got bad.
Varda Valar (00:06:00):    But the dwarves had a large part in that problem. They didn't want to give it back after putting the silmaril in the necklace.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:06:07):    Hmm, indeed.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:06:24):    Well, the dwarves themselves would fall under this category.
Varda Valar (00:06:29):    Both sides had blame there.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:06:55):    They faced Morgoth in battle at points, and were happy to work with the sons of Feanor, but had no problems with making war on Thingol.
Varda Valar (00:07:05):    The dwarves tended to be insular, but were often helpful. They worked well with Thingol early on.
Varda Valar (00:07:49):    That's why he was willing to go to them for such an important job, the earlier earned trust.
Varda Valar (00:08:47):    Turin was one of those good guys in most of the war that might not be good to be around personally.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:09:14):    People around Turin personally tended to die.
Varda Valar (00:10:01):    Even his best friends and loved ones.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:10:32):    Especially does. But part of that was because of Morgoth who was having an argument with Turin's dad.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:10:35):    *those
Varda Valar (00:10:42):    Eol was an odd one. He had both good and bad. He lived alone a lot, worked with dwarves a lot.
Varda Valar (00:10:56):    Aye. A major part was Morgoth's meddling.
Varda Valar (00:11:14):    Turin's ego added to that, his stubborness, his running over others.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:11:25):    Agreed.
Varda Valar (00:13:29):    Denethor.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:14:19):    Considered him, but he did kinda play into Sauron's hand later on.
Varda Valar (00:15:40):    I'm not calling these people evil, but they weren't pure as the driven snow, the way some critics say Tolkien's characters are either pure good or pure evil.
Arien V (00:15:55):    hmm there was also this Gwindor in Finduilas story .. who became very jealous of Turin and so destoyed part of her happiness and contributed to the curse on the children of Hurin
Arien V (00:16:18):    in the Silmarillion version at least
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:16:36):    while we're on the Turin story, I'll add Saeros.
Varda Valar (00:17:01):    Turin was taking over Gwindor's kingdom, people, and fiance, so he had some reason to be upset.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:17:02):    The bully who Turin ended up killing in several different versions...
Varda Valar (00:17:10):    Saeros, that's a good example.
Varda Valar (00:18:19):    A number of the Numenornean kings meant well for their people, but became blinded to what they should have seen, ending in the destruction of many of the people and their gifted land.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:18:34):    ...Yes, how could I forget those...
Varda Valar (00:18:53):    Just haven't gotten around to them. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:19:02):    I actually did not think of them, but there's such a large time scale to go over :)
Varda Valar (00:19:23):    True
Varda Valar (00:19:32):    Saruman meant well, but despaired.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:19:52):    Same can be said for Boromir.
Varda Valar (00:20:01):    He went with if you can't beat them, join them.
Varda Valar (00:20:28):    Boromir, like the Numenorean kings? He might have liked that comparison. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:21:25):    like Saruman, actually :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:21:29):    meant well, but despaired
Varda Valar (00:26:12):    The outlaw groups: Turin's and Beren's. I'd consider Beren's pretty good folk, really, guerrilla fighters.
Varda Valar (00:26:22):    but still human.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:26:43):    It had a sorta-traitor, though, I think?
Varda Valar (00:27:16):    Right. Not really evil, desperate to be with his wife again.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:27:20):    Yep.
Varda Valar (00:30:40):    *picks up a hammer from the shelf*
Varda Valar (00:30:52):    *who made this one, I wonder?*
Varda Valar (00:31:05):    *hits it down on the hammerpad*
Varda Valar (00:31:12):    *fwooooommmm!*
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:31:15):    Technically it could be Sauron's, as he was originally an assistant of Morgoth.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:31:18):    ehrr
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:31:19):    of Aule
Varda Valar (00:31:34):    *darkness spills aorund the room, peacefully, but inexorably*
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:31:44):    peacefully? maybe not...
Varda Valar (00:31:58):    *it pulls back into the hammer, when it is ready*
Varda Valar (00:32:11):    *I place it verrrry carefully back on the shelf*
top

Varda Valar (00:32:19):    After-meeting!
Varda Valar (00:32:27):    *room is still a bit chilled* [Note: Mandos' effects.]

Eonwe Valar (00:32:38):    As Tolkien put it in one of his letters: "...I have not made any of the peoples on the 'right' side, Hobbits, Rohirrim, Men of Dale or of Gondor, any better than men have been or are, or can be."
Varda Valar (00:32:50):    Well put.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:33:09):    Bit of a selective group, though, all human or related to.
Eonwe Valar (00:33:47):    He was using examples, he wasn't making an all-inclusive list :}
Varda Valar (00:34:00):    Aye. :)
Arien V (00:34:18):    :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:34:19):    Yes, of course, I'm just saying it wasn't very random in the sampling :)
Eonwe Valar (00:34:33):    Probably listing off some of the examples he heard the most complaints about at the time.
Eonwe Valar (00:35:06):    For a little more context, because context is fun :} :
Varda Valar (00:35:59):    Aye again :)
Eonwe Valar (00:37:26):    After a long letter in response to a review, in which he goes into discussions on good and evil, how they apply to his story, discussion on the sides, etc., he ends with the following paragraph...
Eonwe Valar (00:39:17):    "So I feel that the fiddle-faddle in reviews, and correspondence about them, as to whether my 'good people' were kind and merciful and gave quarter (in fact they do), or not, is quite beside the point. Some critics seem determined to represent me as a simple-minded adolescent, inspired with, say, a With-the-flag-to-Pretoria spiritm and it does not appear in the story.
Eonwe Valar (00:41:14):    The figure of Denethor alone is enough to show this; but I have not made any of the peoples on the 'right' side, Hobbits, Rohirrim, Men of Dale, or of Gondor, any better than men have been or are, or can be. Mine is not an 'imaginary' world, but an imaginary historical moment on 'Middle-earth' - which is our habitation."
Eonwe Valar (00:41:43):    Arg, I apologize
Eonwe Valar (00:41:55):    I cut a large portion out of that without noticing. Let me try again.
Eonwe Valar (00:42:58):    start at "With-the-flag-to-Pretoria spirit"
Eonwe Valar (00:43:08):    continue here:
Eonwe Valar (00:44:06):    ",and wilfully distort what is said in my tale. I have not that spirit, and it does not appear in the story." Then pick up with the sentence above starting with "The figure of Denethor..."
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:45:07):    I think there's some historical context I'm missing here, what's the flag to pretoria stand for?
Eonwe Valar (00:46:38):    Not familiar with it myself to be honest, and don't have much time to look deeper into it right now.
Eonwe Valar (00:46:54):    But this is what I found with a quick wikipedia search: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Pretoria
Eonwe Valar (00:47:08):    May or may not be helpful.
Eonwe Valar (00:47:40):    If I have time later tonight, I'll see if I can't get some better context on that phrase.
Eonwe Valar (00:48:06):    For now though, I must say take care all, good night, sleep well, and have fun :}
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:48:18):    namarie!
Arien V (00:48:38):    Namarie Eonwe and have a good day :) and night
Varda Valar (00:50:23):    Namarie!

Varda Valar (00:55:03):    Started poking around in the Letters, thanks to Eonwe. :) Found a spot where JRRT tells that dragons were still around, just not of full primeval stature that could have burned a ring.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:55:18):    heh
Varda Valar (00:55:22):    way into letter 144
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:55:49):    komodo?
Varda Valar (00:56:02):    He said "they were active in far later times, close to our own".
Varda Valar (00:56:19):    That question has come up a few times. Nice seeing a definitive answer.

Varda Valar (00:56:56):    He's not as hopeful as I was about the entwives.
Varda Valar (00:57:49):    He said if any had survived, they may have been enslaved in the East, as they need agriculture for food too.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:58:19):    ..bonsai trees are entlings!
Varda Valar (00:59:02):    They might have picked up experience of industrialized and militarized agriculture. It could have made them more anarchic, maybe enough so they could get along with ents.
Arien V (00:59:16):    :) Thats what they are i wondered :)
Varda Valar (00:59:53):    The most hopeful bit is that some may have fled east, or have been enslaved.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:00:21):    Well, I'll start a bit of personal gaming before I dive into Storm.
Varda Valar (01:00:28):    If so, maybe they would not have been as far away as the ents feared. I figured some of the moving trees around the Shire would have been entwives.
Varda Valar (01:00:43):    Since they would have liked the farming area of the Shire, the peace.
Varda Valar (01:00:47):    Ok, fire away!
Arien V (01:01:00):    .. thinking of the war machines .. land air missiles .. mortars where the rapid fire from afare might look indeed like dragon fire

Ar-Pharazon-V (01:03:46):    Flashgaming!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:04:02):    I could link some I've checked from the past few weeks, but I'll stick to this week.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:04:19):    http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/the_sun__moon is the first game! A platformer where you can shift to move and jump through the ground, but be careful not to fall through!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:05:51):    http://www.kongregate.com/games/GoodyPundit/sword-spoon is a defense and upgrade game, defend your castle from incoming waves by building barracks and stuff for soldiers of various kinds, as well as farms and servants to keep them fed and restocked.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:06:53):    http://www.kongregate.com/games/Crescentyr/rullo is the third, a puzzle and math game, figure out what numbers to eliminate to reach the right totals for every row and column!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:07:01):    All 3 are quite fun, so enjoy :D

Ar-Pharazon-V (01:15:47):    Storm time, giving blizzard report after. There's a lot to tell!
Arien V (01:18:38):    bed time for me now i fear :
Varda Valar (01:18:52):    Sleep well!
Arien V (01:19:00):    but i ll read the report or the script here f:)
Arien V (01:19:22):    you too all when you get to it :) Namarie!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:20:29):    namarie!
Varda Valar (01:28:53):    I will have to say the discussion was in AIM, and nowhere else, today, for our "vote with the feet" between AIM and Discord.

Ar-Pharazon-V (01:51:38):    Blizzard gaming!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:51:49):    Where to begin!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:52:54):    Heroes of the Storm: Level 206 now, few new skins gotten through brawl and level reward. This week's brawl was the Hanamura map again, escorting or attacking a payload, trying to get it to the target on time or preventing it from doing so.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:53:16):    That got me my extra level, as well as my first experience playing Chromie. Fun hero, but a bit squishy :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:53:56):    Hearthstone: Interesting random brawl, pick a class, get a deck full of spells and shifters, giving a random unit every turn.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:54:37):    Over halfway with nearly all my classes now (priest a bit behind) so getting there.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:54:55):    Also started opening packs again, now that the legendary change is in place. Got a new one already, the warrior quest from Un'goro.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:55:04):    No, wait, not warrior. The rogue one.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:55:11):    Supposedly the most overpowered :D
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:57:25):    Diablo 3: Really started getting into the season, neglecting bounties this time for rifts. Later on I need to get jewelcrafting recipes anyway so I might as well wait before I do the bounties.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:58:01):    Took some difficulty advice from a WoW friend and it's going well, gotten to level 37 I think. Over halfway to level 70!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:00:26):    Starcraft II: Working on the war chest, through quick training missions! Finished the first 2 stages of phase 1 already, giving me new skins for marine, marauder, zergling, hydralisk, zealot and adept.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:02:00):    Phase 2 unlocks in 3 days, which means I can roll on straight through phase 2 without having to wait. There will be a gap before phase 3 opens, though. During this time I plan to leave SCII for a bit and work on the Icecrown Citadel missions in Hearthstone. I plan to get the Arthas hero eventually, but at least work through the story at least once :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:02:23):    WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:03:03):    Got my last pet from the Northrend raids for the meta achievement, the Drudge Ghoul. Still missing the optional Snobold, but that's not required for the ach, or the reward for it.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:03:16):    Which was a queststarter to do a pet battle with Algalon in front of the Ulduar raid!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:03:37):    After winning that, I got yet another pet, the Stardust bunny :) Very nice looking, and a cool idle animation as well.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:10:15):    I finally got the rank 3 cooking recipe for faronaar fizz (I think it's called?) which leaves just fish-based recipes. Since I now need to take up fishing again, i thought I'd help it along by getting the fishing pole artifact first. And so I did, last night!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:11:39):    Now I can use the rare fish I'll get while fishign for Nomi's recipe-discovering to upgrade the artifact and make fishing even easier :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:11:48):    *fishing
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:17:42):    Heroic raiding going well, got a few new things including best-in-slot bracers. Starting to get Desolate Host and Sass'zine under control, with only 3 bosses to go!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:24:12):    Now working on my fourth Concordance for druid artifacts, the one for resto... only 4 more traits, going very nicely :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:25:04):    What else... appearances, I guess!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:25:35):    Making some progress all around, finished up one of the bosses in Tempest Keep, and finally got the hatpiece needed to complete the season 2 pvp set, so another achievement there.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:27:47):    I have a feeling there should be more, that I've just forgotten... mostly I've just slowly been trying to build up my routine again.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:31:11):    Ah well, if not, that's my report for the week :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (04:31:19):    namarie, sending transcript later in the week!
Varda Valar (21:31:34):    thanks :)  [Central time]
EonweValar: Heya all.
Aug 14, 2017 5:47 AM EonweValar
For the record: Looks like that's With the Flag to Pretoria, a book by H.W.Wilson.
Aug 14, 2017 5:49 AM EonweValar: It's on the Boer War: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Boer_War
Aug 14, 2017 5:56 AM EonweValar: So sounds like Tolkien was referencing the way that book was written, or presented its subject matter.
Aug 14, 2017 6:40 AM EonweValar: OK, that's it for me for tonight. Take care all and have fun :}
Aug 14, 2017 6:44 PM ArPharazon-V: So, Starcraft Remastered launched. I checked it out, looks pretty good. The old game, but with better graphics. From what I can tell, even the mission intros are basically the same but with better resolution, and the intro text comes with pictures now.
Aug 14, 2017 6:44 PM ArPharazon-V: I haven't yet tried the actual intro cinematic or the gameplay.
Aug 14, 2017 6:44 PM Arien V: ah nice :)
Aug 14, 2017 6:45 PM ArPharazon-V: I was worried it'd lose some of its old charm, but from what I can tell so far, it's the same but better in detail :)
Aug 14, 2017 6:46 PM Arien V: good :)
Aug 14, 2017 6:46 PM Arien V: GW 2 brings out in september a new expansion , Crystal of Fire, and the graphic there looks pretty nifty
Aug 14, 2017 6:47 PM ArPharazon-V: Guild Wars? Nice!
Aug 14, 2017 6:47 PM Arien V: aye :) playing that sometimes .. the second one tho
Aug 14, 2017 6:55 PM Arien V: Namarie golden one :)
Aug 14, 2017 6:55 PM ArPharazon-V: namarie!
Aug 14, 2017 6:55 PM ArPharazon-V: and I've only played the first one
Aug 14, 2017 6:55 PM Arien V: i played both actually

Aug 14, 2017 6:56 PMArien V: o/
Aug 14, 2017 6:56 PMArPharazon-V: From what i heard, it lost a bunch of the stuff I liked about the first.
Aug 14, 2017 6:56 PMArPharazon-V: o/
1:05 AM EonweValar: Heya to all on and all to come on later :}
1:06 AM EonweValar: Aye, noticed Starcraft in my Battle.net launcher. Yay :}Now just gotta wait for WC3 Remastered and D2 Remastered, lol :}
1:07 AM EonweValar: Nice that they decided to keep the "Battle.net" as part of the app name too. To me at least.
1:10 AM EonweValar: Didn't pre-order it, but looks like all I missed out on was the fancy Command Center/Nexus/Hive graphics. I can live with that. Had they also applied to SC2, might've been a tougher decision :}
7:09 AM EonweValar: OK, that's it for me. Take care and have fun :}
