Ar-Pharazon-V: Elladan asked me yesterday why he hasn't been invited to
meetings in several weeks.
Varda Valar: Eating at the computer, time-honored system
Ar-Pharazon-V: Perhaps we should change that today :-)
Varda Valar: He hasn't?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Apparently not.
Varda Valar: Not intentional
Ar-Pharazon-V: I didn't know he needed one, so there's that.

Ar-Pharazon-V: I'll try it then.
Varda Valar: there he is
Ar-Pharazon-V: Or.. hmm?
Ar-Pharazon-V: You're right. I can't invite him to group chat.

Scott Lombardi: brb
Scott Lombardi: he's crying
Varda Valar: Take care of the pup
Varda Valar: Any other news?
Varda Valar: We have news from Eonwe.
Varda Valar: The GSMU
(Games Site Mass Update) is now underway!
Varda Valar: For those whose email he couldn't reach, we have a copy of
his letter on the News. Here's a link:
Varda Valar: http://valarguild.org/varda/NewsArchives/extras/2016/GSMU2016.htm
Varda Valar: If your email is confidential, feel free to email Varda to
have just the information passed on, or use the forum.
Varda Valar: Some emails don't work at all, shown in red on the
Membership page.
Varda Valar: He asks that the updates be sent in by September to give
him time to make the State of Valar Gaming report for the Oct 4
anniversary of the guild.
Varda Valar: I also ask that people start thinking up Tolkien Site
goodies for the anniversary
for this year.
Varda Valar: Do we want to have a theme this time?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Difficult to find any, hm?
Varda Valar: No :-)
Varda Valar: But feel free to give input. I hadn't really planned on
being a dictator, heh.
Varda Valar: Didn't seem to help much on previous years for inspiring
folks, but maybe we needed a better theme.
Varda Valar: None at all is an option too.
Varda Valar: A theme might help people think of something instead of
feeling quite so lost.
Varda Valar: Could be something about how the regular people were
affected by the book events, for instance.
Varda Valar: Anyway, taking suggestions for now. Feel free to mention
ideas now or email if you like.
Varda Valar: A non-themed item will also be taken, so it's not set in
stone. Just be neat to have them related in some way.
Varda Valar: Onwards.
Varda Valar: Eonwe does prefer emailed info, much easier to be sure the
person wants it mentioned, and easier to do the webwork.
Varda Valar: Any further comments? Seen Helm, Aragorn, others? Glad you
mentioned Fladrif. :-)
Varda Valar: Haven't heard from the Guild War people in a while.

Varda Valar: We have offers to come join in Alliance events on Saturday
and Sunday, pretty much every week.
Varda Valar: Sundays 1pm ET: at Alliance kinhouse (8 Long Street,
Haynwater, Bree-land). Come roleplay a bit, share a story, or a song!
Varda Valar: RT (Roving Threat) raids, on Saturdays at 3:30 pm
Varda Valar: We also have been grouping with each other some, and doing
a lot of solo.
Varda Valar: The kin chest was expanded recently. And we have all
crafting available, along with a horn call for a supplier. We're
located not far from the vaults.
Varda Valar: Any other LotRO news?
Varda Valar: WoW:
Varda Valar: There was a Developer Q&A this week.
Varda Valar: Blizzard also released a companion app for phones that lets you do certain
WoW-related things from a compatable phone.
Varda Valar: Check out the recent hotfixes.
Varda Valar: StarCraft 2:
Varda Valar: Looking forward to Alarak as a Co-Op
commander? Then you'll want to check out the Patch 3.6 Preview: New Co-op Commander Alarak.
Varda Valar: StarCraft/BroodWar:
Varda Valar: Gaming together by Fangorn, Sauron, and Varda.
Varda Valar: Heroes of the Storm:
Varda Valar: Season 1 is coming to an end and Season 2
is about to start. Get more details here!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Gotta love everything Alarak, but then I'm kind of a
John de Lancie fan these days :-)
Varda Valar: Q in Star Trek?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Q in Star Trek, Discord in My Little Pony, Alarak in
Starcraft II (and Heroes of the Storm, starting soon). And various
other things I happened to catch him in.
Varda Valar: http://delancie.com/
Ar-Pharazon-V: He manages to make every single one of his character
just sound so.. fun.
Ar-Pharazon-V: *characters
Varda Valar: Heh - he's going to do a documentary on bronies.
Varda Valar: Agreed!
Ar-Pharazon-V: The documentary was made years ago now, I think. It
caught some flak because it was commercialized, while focused on a
fandom that thrives on free content contribution.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Unless he's doing a sequel, but haven't heard of it.
Varda Valar: My Little Pony is done for profit, if only by being paid
for by TV ads.
Ar-Pharazon-V: It is. But I meant the fandom's contribution.
Varda Valar: Ok, fair enough.
Varda Valar: Anyway, that was all of the gaming news, unless anyone
else has something general?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Including art, music, fanmade merch, convention stuff..
but enough about that ;-)
Varda Valar: The good stuff. ^^
Ar-Pharazon-V: In any case, for general gaming news, I guess I can add
that Alarak is coming to Heroes of
the Storm in a couple of days :-)
Varda Valar: Any further comments, suggestions, news, etc?
Varda Valar: Thanks
Varda Valar: So, Alarak will be all around
Ar-Pharazon-V: (and I'm just reading, in Trivia, that his "'Q" ability
will be "Discord Strike" - a reference to both previously mentioned
roles!)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Yep, showing up on multiple fronts.
Varda Valar: That sounds fitting
Varda Valar: The Trickster, a Loki or Coyote sort of guy?
Varda Valar: Here's a letter with news from Eonwe that should already
have been mentioned.
Varda Valar: WoW Lothar:
Crossed paths with Bofur, Nob, and Arien, all of whom already have lvl
110s Kudos to them :}
Varda Valar: GSMU:
Mails sent out, first reponses already in. Hope to get them up on the
Games Site this week. Reminder to those who have not yet answered to
respond by September 30th please.

Varda Valar: Tolkien:
Varda Valar: We do have a post on our Forum story
Varda Valar: http://valarguild.proboards.com/thread/1162/angmar-bound-chapter-short-respite?page=7&scrollTo=6787
Varda Valar: You can add your bits in there if you like, or we can just
move on from there. More fun with your additions to the story.
Varda Valar: Auros is already a bit ahead of us in the timeline and is
waiting for us to catch up. Then maybe our party can start moving.
Varda Valar: Silmarils.
What was the big deal about them? Why was a book named after them?
Varda Valar: And should we be saying Silmarilli?
Ar-Pharazon-V: I think we do, but extralingual grammar is always a pain.
Varda Valar: Silima seems to be a crystal of some kind, well nigh
unbreakable
Varda Valar: :-)
Varda Valar: We can just say silmarils for the purpose of our
discussion.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Related to silicon?
Varda Valar: Crystals tend to be silicon, aye
Varda Valar: "shining substance made by craft" in Quenya, for silima.
Varda Valar: Not much on the chemistry there.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Presumably something rocky.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Might use sand.
Varda Valar: Silmarilli: "brilliance or jewels of silima"
Ar-Pharazon-V: Could be carbon!
Varda Valar: Diamond-like, to me, from descriptions.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Which is made frooooom....
Ar-Pharazon-V: carbon!
Varda Valar: yay!
Varda Valar: The silima was the shell.
Varda Valar: Inside that was light, special light no longer available.
Varda Valar: What was that light?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Shells of diamond that contain (practically unending)
light-sources within. Quite a feat.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Light from them trees.
Varda Valar: A feat not able to be duplicated, aye.
Varda Valar: Them thar trees?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Them thar big ol' gol' an' silver trees.
Varda Valar: sil - shine (with white or silver light). Silmarillion
index
Varda Valar: Thar ya go!
Ar-Pharazon-V: white or silver? Wouldn't that be Telperion? What about
the other?
Varda Valar: Pardon, Appendix
Varda Valar: It would be a mix of silver and gold light.
Ar-Pharazon-V: That's better :-)
Varda Valar: Which makes me wonder if the silver and gold hair of
Galadriel is related somehow, to the elves, one reason it was so
valuable.
Varda Valar: A reminder
Varda Valar: They're big on memories.
Eonwe Valar (Eonwe Valar) has entered the room.
Varda Valar: Silmarillion, chapter 7
Varda Valar: Eonwe! Aiya :-)
Eonwe Valar: Heya all.
Varda Valar: "Of the Silmarils and the Unrest of the Noldor"
Varda Valar: Welcome :-)
Varda Valar: We were just figuring out what all the fuss was over those
silmarils, that a whole book would be written named after them.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya!
Varda Valar: There were only three made.
Ar-Pharazon-V: It does make a bit of a difference when the biggest
light-source you've got is currently contained in 3 gems in someone's
hoard.
Varda Valar: We won't really know what they were made of until after
the moon and sun are gone, and Feanor returns from the Halls of Awaiting
Varda Valar: It looked like diamond but was stronger
Varda Valar: It houses "the blended light of the Trees of Valinor"
Ar-Pharazon-V: I bet the secret is really simple and when Feanor tells
people in the end, everyone will go "Ohhh, why didn't we think of that
before?"
Varda Valar: Probably. :-)
Varda Valar: They shone with their own light even in deepest darkness,
like stars of Varda
Varda Valar: They seemed as if they were alive, rejoicing in light and
giving it back "in hue more marvellous than before".
Arien V: ((short Frali post))
Varda Valar: Huzzah, Arien!
Varda Valar: We're reviving our story, Auros. :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: What was the catch-up point again?
Arien V: leaving Eonwes library now
Arien V: err Elronds
Arien V: sorry :-) *blush*
Varda Valar: "Varda hallowed the Silmarils, so that thereafter no
mortal flesh, nor hands unclean, nor anything of evil will might touch
them, but it was scorched and withered"
Varda Valar: hehe, Eonwe now has a library.
Varda Valar: Hey, he probably does.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Mortal flesh, eh.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Did that include Beren's?
Varda Valar: I'm actually thinking about Morgoth's taking them,
wondering what he used to handle them. Looking for it now.
Varda Valar: Beren, a mortal. How did he handle that one?
Eonwe Valar: Beren was just awesome like that.
Arien V: if i remember right .. he couldnt bear to touch the gems,
right?
Arien V: Morgoth i mean
Eonwe Valar: Morgoth, no.
Eonwe Valar: They were burning him through the case they were in.
Arien V: they also burned the insides of that wolf . Carcharoth
Eonwe Valar: Beren's hand was fine though.
Arien V: pure of heart maybe? at least "not evil"
Ar-Pharazon-V: For a certain meaning of "fine".
Ar-Pharazon-V: He was still mortal, Arien.
Arien V: should have told Thingol enough about Beren :-\
Arien V: that he could trouch them
Eonwe Valar: Well, compared to Carcharoth's insides, his hand was
asfine as a hand detached from its owner is going to be.
Varda Valar: Beren removed the Silmaril from the Iron Crown of Morgoth
Varda Valar: He used a dagger, I think, still looking for it
Varda Valar: (News page color repaired)
Ar-Pharazon-V: I think the dagger snapped when he tried for the second.
Varda Valar: Right
Varda Valar: He was only supposed to go after one, but went after
another.
Varda Valar: Cheeky human. :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Can't believe I remembered that ;-)
Varda Valar: Hey, you
Varda Valar: are a regular in these meetings, get a lot of exposure
Varda Valar: And aye, good memory
Ar-Pharazon-V: True!
Varda Valar: It's ch 8, "Of the Darkening of Valinor"
Varda Valar: ch 9, this is how strong the silmarils are:
Varda Valar: Yavanna said, "Yet had I but a little of that light
Varda Valar: I could recall life to the Trees
Varda Valar: , ere their roots decay..."
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah, "a little", such a nice relative term.
Varda Valar: There's the part Eonwe mentioned, in "Of the Flight of the
Noldor"
Varda Valar: "and though they were locked in a crystal casket, they had
begun to burn him..."
Varda Valar: "and his hand was clenched in pain"
Ar-Pharazon-V: The guy sure knew how to live with pain.
Varda Valar: There's a bit more on Ungoliant's nature right there too
Varda Valar: Morgoth said, "For with my power that I put into thee thy
work was accomplished"
Varda Valar: Morgoth set the Silmarils in his crown to style himself
king of the world instead of Manwe.
Varda Valar: "His hands were burned black by the touch of those
hallowed jewels, and black they remained ever after; nor was he ever
free from the pain of the burning , and the anger of the pain."
Varda Valar: "That crown he never took from his head, though its weight
became a deadly weariness."
Varda Valar: ok, now we need to find Beren.
Varda Valar: Did anyone reach that yet and want to type? I'll keep
looking for it.
Varda Valar: "Of Beren and Luthien"
Varda Valar: "As he closed it in his hand, the radiance welled within
his living flesh, and his hand became as a shining lamp;
Varda Valar: "but the jewel suffered his touch and hurt him not."
Varda Valar: Then he took a notion to go beyond his vow.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Divine intervention.
Varda Valar: At that time, his vow was in line and apparently blessed
his effort.
Varda Valar: But he went beyond.
Varda Valar: The knife snapped.
Ar-Pharazon-V: We wouldn't want to make it too easy.
Varda Valar: That disturbed Morgoth as it hit his cheek, and that woke
up the rest fo the room.
Varda Valar: Hey, he didn't vow to take all three.
Varda Valar: They ran.
Varda Valar: Carcharoth caught up.
Varda Valar: Beren held up the Silmaril before the monster
Varda Valar: but the "devouring spirit within him awoke to sudden fire"
Varda Valar: and he bit off the hand and swallowed it and the silmaril.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Bit of an Icarus story going on here.
Varda Valar: "swiftly all his inwards were filled with a flame of
anguish".
Varda Valar: That should be enough on that subject. :-)
Varda Valar: So we have jewels that could have remade the Trees and
their light, but were not so used. Thus we have our Moon and Sun
instead.
Varda Valar: They were hallowed and beautiful, valuable, much desired.
Most of all, Feanor wanted to keep them no matter what.
Varda Valar: His oath put on his offspring caused a large amount of the
history recorded in the Silmarillion.
Varda Valar: So, greed and hubris?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Usually not good very good things.
Varda Valar: Especially bad in Tolkien's world. :-)
Varda Valar: Bad outside it too. He gets to point this out and other
things in a way we can look at without our real world bias interfering.
Varda Valar: A major reason that fantasy is a good thing to read and
write.
Varda Valar: Any other comments?
Varda Valar: And shall we do more posting on the forum story? :-)
Varda Valar: Phar may be out of time.
Varda Valar: *picks up a diamond gavel from the collection going by on
the conveyor belt shelf*
Varda Valar: *it breaks up the lights into rainbows for miles around*
Varda Valar: *the lights make the table chime*
Varda Valar: *returns the gavel*

Varda Valar: After-meeting:
Varda Valar: Free chat. :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Finishing up this Hearthstone quest, then I'll throw in
a gaming report. Yep, time starting to run out :-)
Varda Valar: Should we try to finish earlier than this? 6pm my time,
7pm Eastern (Valar Standard time).
Ar-Pharazon-V: It's fun, it's just a matter of how long the Tolkien
topic takes. Not worth sacrificing, in my opinion, even if I need to
hurry in the end.
Ar-Pharazon-V: *it's fine
Arien V: two hours is a good time and for me it is about right :-)
Varda Valar: Ok, cool.
Arien V: depends really on the topic and how much we know off hand or
how close relevent books are etc . :-)
Arien V: or how tired / distraced i am :-\
Ar-Pharazon-V: Time for Pharazon's Personal Gaming Report!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Starting with 3 flashgames I've played this week!
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.kongregate.com/games/m0rkeulv/castle-wars-2
is the first one! It's sort of a cardgame, but it's mostly in the
randomness of the choices you get, I've not really looked into the
collecting stuff.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Badge for this week was for winning a multiplayer match
and you start there with quite a decent set anyway.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Goal is to build up your castle with various different
resources and spend the resources to use cards to either boost
yourself, or bring down the opponent. Win by getting your castle to 100
points or destroying the opposition's.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Can take a few matches to get the hang of it, but it's
not too complex. I found that focusing on resource-providers helps a
bit. Luck required too, of course.
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/spectrum_heist
is the second game, a speed running game where you have to get as far
as possible while changing colors when needed and not falling off of
platforms.
Ar-Pharazon-V: And you can collect stuff as you go!
Eonwe Valar: Ok, I need to go. Sorry I wasn't *here* as much as I'd
hoped to be today. Take care all, good night, sleep well, and have fun
:}
Ar-Pharazon-V: namarie!
Eonwe Valar (Eonwe Valar) has left the room.
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.kongregate.com/games/esthetix/the-magical-forest
is the third game, another point and click from the same series I've
linked before.
Ar-Pharazon-V: This time you're a kid in a magical forest with the door
back home locked, and you need to retrieve the key.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Enjoy!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming...
Ar-Pharazon-V: Still no Diablo 3
done. Will get there, to finish chapter 4 at least, I'm sure.. besides,
there's still time to get further.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone:
Getting a bit of experience difference between classes. That usually
resolves itself, but sometimes needs a bit of creativity in how I do
the quests.
Ar-Pharazon-V: In this week's brawl, you choose a hero, and then a
second hero class with the class cards mixed in. Can create some
powerful combos with the random cards you can get.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Heroes of the Storm:
Pushing on, nearing level 8 with some heroes, and made it over 100000
gold. I should probably spend some, but I've not reached any goldcap
yet it seems, and I have no roles to fill. So if they keep getting
cheaper, I should probably just wait.
Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V: Busy busy! Bit slow, but did make it to level 102 on the
main druid.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Got some questing done in the class hall, and finished
the short questline involving the Exodar (I'll not give spoilers, it's
pretty heavy stuff), unlocking my first new artifact appearance.
Varda Valar: Namarie Eonwe
Ar-Pharazon-V: Got the first 2 quest chapters done in the Azsuna zone,
getting myself a new blue dragon pet in the process, and now I'm ready
to tackle the quests for the remaining druid artifacts, starting with
guardian, then balance, then restoration.
Ar-Pharazon-V: After that, it's back to the normal questing zones.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, and I also started the profession quests for
skinning and leatherworking, but while I did finish the first skinning
quest today, leatherworking needs to wait a bit until I get to a place
where I can gather stormscales.
Scott Lombardi (Scott92027) has left the room.
Ar-Pharazon-V: And the appearance unlocking from old instances
continues as well. Took me a while, but cleaned out all of Dire Maul,
and wrapped up Scholomance today as well. Next week I'll start with
Razorfen Downs and go from there.
Varda Valar: Namarie Elladan
Ar-Pharazon-V: And I think that's my news for this week!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie Elladan!
Varda Valar: Thank you, Phar.
Arien V: Namarie all together :-)
Arien V: bedtime here
Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
