Before-meeting
You have just entered room "valarguildmeetingplace."
VardaValar1 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya. Another 17 minutes until meeting time, party on. :-)
ArPharazonV: Aiya!
ArPharazonV: 17?
ArPharazonV: Are my clocks off by 10 minutes?
VardaValar1: hmm, 7
VardaValar1: Nope
ArPharazonV: hehe
VardaValar1: My intention to arrive 15 minutes early seems to have gone awry. :-)
ArPharazonV: Can happen.
AriehnV has entered the room.
AriehnV: aiya all together :-)
ArPharazonV: Aiya!
VardaValar1: Aiya Sunshine :-)
GwaihirValar has entered the room.

VardaValar1: Art:
VardaValar1: We have a new model from DeepGroover-(T): Viking Fury
VardaValar1: As you know, the Rohirrim are based on Vikings somewhat,
if they rode horses on the sea of grass instead of ships on the
saltwater sea
ArPharazonV: Interesting parallel.
VardaValar1: This model is shown in progress as he worked on it, so the final product is at the bottom if you scroll down:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/art/gallery/DeepGroover/VikingFury/VikingFury.htm
VardaValar1: More art is being worked on by the Bohemian Weasel-(T) but not yet ready to show.

scott92027 has entered the room.
scott92027: Aiya and welcome back, Varda!
scott92027: I have company, and, well, super bowl :-)
scott92027: but wanted to say hello to everyone!
ArPharazonV: Aiya!
VardaValar1: Thanks!
ArPharazonV: Ah, sports.
VardaValar1: Even Elwing is going to watch the Superbowl, mostly for the amusing ads. heh
VardaValar1: In LotrO, they started a discussion of sports in Middle-earth. :-)
AriehnV: Aiya Elladan and i love that figure .. great work .. i should show Helm that
ArPharazonV: Sounds like a decent topic for today.
VardaValar1: I actually had Secret Fire planned, but we can do both. ^^
ArPharazonV: That works :-) I can't think of any sports anyway ;-)
VardaValar1: Please do, Arien.
VardaValar1: Golf!
ArPharazonV: True!
VardaValar1: Bullroarer hit the goblin Golfimbul's head so hard that it
fell off and rolled into a hole, creating the game of golf.
VardaValar1: In gaming again,
VardaValar1: (digressions are us)
VardaValar1: Diablo 3:
VardaValar1: If you rebirthed a character for the new season at the beginning, and you haven't yet claimed your items,
you might want to soon.
VardaValar1: Blizzard also posted a blog discussing
Set Dungeons.
scott92027: I did find a LotR game for console also. Shadows of Mordor :-)
VardaValar1: Aye, a ranger reborn almost wraithlike set on vengeance?
scott92027: Anyway, I'll let you all get to bidness. :-) Namarie everyone! I hope the Broncos win! Talk soon!
VardaValar1: StarCraft 2:
VardaValar1: A new patch is out:
Patch 3.1.2.
With it comes a new skin for the Colossus. Win two games in certain game modes to have your Colossus
look like a Tal'darim.
VardaValar1: Namarie Elladan :-)
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
VardaValar1: Ladder Season 1 for 2016
has begun.
scott92027 has left the room.
VardaValar1: Heroes of the Storm:
VardaValar1: Lunar Festival
has begun.
VardaValar1: There's a new patch out. Check out the
patch notes.
VardaValar1: Hearthstone:
VardaValar1: See what changes are coming in the blog
A New Way to Play.
VardaValar1: Overwatch:
VardaValar1: The closed beta is back February 9th. Check out the
announcement.
VardaValar1: LotRO:
ArPharazonV: (also, new hero is out in Heroes of the Storm, the wizard)
VardaValar1: Thanks, Phar!
VardaValar1: The gang in LotRO
has characters all over the levels, lots of variety. One minute we're
running Defense of Minas Tirith, another we're back in Moria or the
Great Barrows. :-)
VardaValar1: Good crafting too. The food, for one, is less invasive of
bag space. Huzzah from someone with perpetually overloaded bags.
VardaValar1: We found a spot to put every crafting facility in our kin
house until the last spot for farmland, and could not bring ourselves
to get rid of those last two large trophies.
ArPharazonV: I know that problem..
ArPharazonV: The bags, that is.
VardaValar1: The head of a dragon and sword of a balrog.
VardaValar1: heh
VardaValar1: We have a faint hope of new hooks for items coming in another update, but it's very faint.
VardaValar1: Any other general gaming comments? Maybe Eve Online or others you're fond of?
ArPharazonV: Well, the new Hearthstone season started, but that happens every month.
VardaValar1: Good to mention.
ArPharazonV: New card back for February will be.. ehr... tauren, from the top of my head?
ArPharazonV: Thunder Bluff.
VardaValar1: LotRO has Hobnangians (hit the chickens with a stick in
teams) and a restarted Yule Festival since it was shortened so much by
the server swap.
VardaValar1: Any further business, comment, suggestion?
AriehnV: .. blizzard needs to make houses bigger ^^ both for kins and individuals ^^
VardaValar1: heh. We are never satisfied.
AriehnV: or allow two characters per account to buy a house
AriehnV: eerrr turbine i mean
VardaValar1: I'd like another room or section added to our kin house, maybe personal house, for the crafting area.
ArPharazonV: I'd like a house from Blizzard in WoW... but garrison's nice too.
VardaValar1: In LotRO, you can give permission so others can help pay rent and can use the place. Nothing like that for WoW?
ArPharazonV: Garrison requires no rent. There are no guild homes.
VardaValar1: Not paying rent can help free up unused houses in LotRO.
So many just sat there, unused and unusable until they did that. Rent
can be paid a year ahead though.
ArPharazonV: Garrisons are instanced. Every one of them in the exact
same place (well, one for horde and one for alliance) and you can only
visit someone else's if you're in their party.
ArPharazonV: Which also means, no lack of space :-)
VardaValar1: Nifty how many systems there are. Creativity at work.
VardaValar1: Very good.
VardaValar1: We can visit each other's houses and pay the rent if
someone has to be away, say, in the hospital. Don't need that with a
garrison. Taxpayer paid? :-)
VardaValar1: Any other comments?
top
VardaValar1: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: In LotRO, the gang had a brief mention of sports in Middle-earth, as a way of going along with the Superbowl.
VardaValar1: Remember the game of golf from the Shire?
VardaValar1: O come on. You know this one. :-)
VardaValar1: How did golf get its name?
ArPharazonV: Sorry, was away for a bit.
ArPharazonV: Golfimbol the goblin king, if I recall :-)
VardaValar1: There you go. :-)
VardaValar1: Bullroarer Took in the war knocked Golfimbul's head off
and it rolled into a hole, thereby creating the game of golf.
ArPharazonV: Got his head knocked off and landed in a rabbit hole. Not a nice way to go.
VardaValar1: He didn't notice by then.
ArPharazonV: Also, must've been some swing.
VardaValar1: Biggest hobbit at least until ones that drank Ent draught.
VardaValar1: So the biggest natural hobbit. Even rode a full-sized horse instead of a pony.
AriehnV: how tall would that be then?
VardaValar1: Various places had to have horse sports: races, some version of polo?, tourney style stuff maybe in more of a free space.
VardaValar1: It actually says, I think, have to look it up. We'll let you do that if you like and report back?
ArPharazonV: Well, jockeys are usually small(er) people. So it doesn't need to be very tall.
VardaValar1: Aye, not tall for a human.
ArPharazonV: Some of the more important places in Gondor might have had jousts, yes.
VardaValar1: They probably had games of horseshoes.
VardaValar1: Rohan probably had horsing around sports.
ArPharazonV: Aye. Polo comes to mind. Goblin heads not required.
VardaValar1: Optional?
ArPharazonV: Traditional.
VardaValar1: There you go. :-)
AriehnV: Four foot five ^^
ArPharazonV: Would there be aquatic sports? Sailing races among the elves of Valinor? Or perhaps the Numenoreans?
VardaValar1: Knucklebones for dice probably common with soldiers especially
ArPharazonV: Ah, there we go :-)
VardaValar1: Thanks, Arien!
VardaValar1: The Teleri elves did sport about in the water by the short, likely sailing and swimming contests, true.
VardaValar1: *shore
AriehnV: the children played hide and seek and ran races .. so a kind of sport as well and i can imagine some form of rope jumping too
AriehnV: amongst the hobbits at least
VardaValar1: Lots of likely sports not mentioned.
VardaValar1: Probably forerunners of modern sports.
ArPharazonV: Might the hobbits have something with excess crops etc?
ArPharazonV: Egg throwing contests?
VardaValar1: (beer for excess crops?)
VardaValar1: Quilting bees
ArPharazonV: For a moment I thought you were referring to actual bees.
VardaValar1: We know poetry and stories and songs in the Halls of Fire for fun. Not necessarily a sport.
VardaValar1: Honeyed quilting bees.
ArPharazonV: Karaoke contests? Probably not. Normal singing ones perhaps.
VardaValar1: Singing for sure.
VardaValar1: And lots of instruments
VardaValar1: Music should have been a big thing that near the memory of
original creation by Song. All sorts of musical contests.
VardaValar1: or at least music for fun, together.
VardaValar1: Battles of the bands sometimes
AriehnV: an elf Mod should be very impressive :-)
VardaValar1: Mod?
AriehnV: you know here in scotland we have an annual singing contest with Gaelic traditional songs, instruments and stories
ArPharazonV: (right, midnight Darkmoon Arena's about to start, so will be afk for a few minutes starting in a few minutes)
AriehnV: aye . the Royal National Mod
VardaValar1: Good luck, Phar!
ArPharazonV: Hmm, contests for storytellers.
AriehnV: with competitions for for individual singlers and choirs
VardaValar1: Like the Bardic Circle at the SCA. :-)
AriehnV: good luck with that Phari ^^#
VardaValar1: (Society for Creative Anachronisms)
ArPharazonV: There was a mention in one of the Discworld books of a
contest among the druids of Llamedos where they would compete with
songs, and the winner won a beautiful, traditionally made.. lyre, I
think the instrument was.
AriehnV: Wales has that too with their Eistefodd or something like this .. spelling can be wrong
ArPharazonV: I imagine the elves might have something similar.
VardaValar1: Aye
ArPharazonV: And thanks, I'll need said luck ;-)
VardaValar1: *shovels up a whole lot more luck*
VardaValar1: For the next topic:
VardaValar1: The Secret Fire.
VardaValar1: Turns out a number of people we meet are confused by Gandalf saying he's a Servant of the Secret Fire and Wielder of the Flame of Anor.
VardaValar1: Then he calls the Balrog a Flame of Udun.
VardaValar1: Udûn
VardaValar1: I have trouble with diacritical marks, so please forgive
the lack of use. Feel free to use them if they are easy for you.
VardaValar1: So what does Gandalf mean? What fires would he be referring to with those three?
VardaValar1: [Kinship] Istarond: I think thats Ballhog Flame of NFL
VardaValar1: (Joke from Gorlim-V)
VardaValar1: Arien found a video of a Mod for us. Go ahead, Arien.
AriehnV: yep from the massed choirs from two years ago . on the last day
AriehnV: after all is over
AriehnV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xBmAs8-dkQ
VardaValar1: When they are just having fun. :-)
VardaValar1: Lovely
VardaValar1: Surprised the men were speaking English.
VardaValar1: Happen to know whose statue that is on the skyline?
AriehnV: nope i fear not :-(
VardaValar1: No worries, just curious.
AriehnV: Flora Mac Donald ^^ of course that makes sense
VardaValar1: Thanks
AriehnV: the heroine lady who is said to have hidden and supported
Prince Charlie .. Charles II on his flight from the English after
Culloden
ArPharazonV: Well, let me see. Udun is.. Mordor-related?
ArPharazonV: (didn't win, btw)
AriehnV: Udun .. wasnt that a fortress of Morgoth?
AriehnV: the one before Thangorodrim
VardaValar1: Aye, Sindarin name for Utumno.
VardaValar1: It was also a deep valley in Mordor.
ArPharazonV: Ahh!
VardaValar1: Appears to be Utumno that Gandalf is referring to, by context.
ArPharazonV: See, I knew it was something like that. But in this case, balrog-wise, it's probably Utumno, yes.
VardaValar1: or an insult, not beyond Gandalf, that the balrog is from that valley.
VardaValar1: or both. :-)
VardaValar1: What could the Flame of Anor be referring to?
ArPharazonV: Anor. Minas Anor. Anorien. Anor means something, but I can't think of it right now. It wasn't "west" was it?
VardaValar1: Arien should know that one. :-)
GwaihirValar: sun ;-)
ArPharazonV: Ahh, right.
ArPharazonV: So the Flame of Anor is then the sun. The light of the West.
ArPharazonV: Basically it's light flame vs dark flame.
VardaValar1: Aye!
VardaValar1: It could also refer obliquely to the Ring of Fire he's wearing.
VardaValar1: What does Gandalf mean by saying that he is a Servant of the Secret Fire?
AriehnV: he is standing for the West .. a servant of the Lords of the West
AriehnV: i.e. the Valar
ArPharazonV: Secret Fire makes me think of the fire of creation that
Illuvatar set at the heart of the world, but I don't think it was
called taht.
ArPharazonV: *that.
VardaValar1: It would be one of the names for it, aye.
VardaValar1: [Kinship] Rjan: creative activity of Eru
VardaValar1: The Flame Imperishable, the Secret Fire.
ArPharazonV: Yes. That one.
ArPharazonV: It means Gandalf declares himself as either a servant of
Eru.. or simply a servant for the good of Arda/all creation.
VardaValar1: "Therefore
Ilúvatar gave to their vision Being, and set it amid the Void,
and the Secret Fire was sent to burn at the heart of the World; and it
was called Eä."
VardaValar1: Aye, and one does not exclude the other. Good.
VardaValar1: It was what Morgoth hunted, for creating life, as he did not understand that it was within Eru.
ArPharazonV: "It was in my pocket all along.."
VardaValar1: heh
VardaValar1: Another time it's used is not with the name, but refers to
it, when Eru gives Aule's robots life, making them the current dwarves.
VardaValar1 has left the room.
VardaValar1 has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: Aiyata
VardaValar1: oops, bumped a button. Thanks
VardaValar1: Eru had compassion for Aule for his humility and gave the dwarves life.
VardaValar1: Poor Melkor. If he'd only learned from that, he could have had good living beings too.
VardaValar1: But he wanted to have and use the power himself, to be the creator instead of a sub-creator. Real lack of humility.
ArPharazonV: Alas. Might've been a boring story, though.
VardaValar1: The reference is oblique, not easy to find with a Search.
VardaValar1: Maybe. :-)
AriehnV: I wonder what good living creatures by Morgoth would have looked like
ArPharazonV: Difficult to say, because 1) they wouldn't be designed for
evil and 2) they wouldn't be corrupted from other creatures.
ArPharazonV: Might still be black in color-scheme, though.
AriehnV: but yes .. every really good story wants an antagonist .. and
a *good* one .. i. e. plausible , cunning , resourceful . powerful ..
someone to take serious asl adversary and fear-inducing as Master
VardaValar1: "Even as I gave being to
the thoughts of the Ainur at the beginning of the World, so now I have
taken up thy desire and given it a place therein..."
VardaValar1: Interesting. Morgoth was big on fire and ice. Maybe his
creatures would have been other versions of frost and fire giants as in
the Nordic tales.
VardaValar1: We seem to have answered the question. :-)
VardaValar1: Any further comments?
ArPharazonV: Frost giant friends, very useful. Perhaps like the mountain giants from Azeroth.
VardaValar1: Or the rock giants in the Hobbit
VardaValar1: Might not have paid any attention to the wee races they could hardly see
VardaValar1: Be nice if they were friendly, took care not to step on villages
AriehnV: they seemed to be almost as tall as the mountains .. at least in the movie
AriehnV: i wonder whether Tolkien concepted them like that
VardaValar1: They are described in the Hobbit. The movie made it more personal, which made sense.
VardaValar1: Source of the sound of thunder
VardaValar1: If there is no further comment?
AriehnV: it only sais in the hobbit "they could hear the giants shouting and guffawing all over the mountains"
AriehnV: pardon me "all over the mountain sides*]
VardaValar1: Which chapter? I'd like to look at that too. :-)
AriehnV: Over hill and Under Hill
VardaValar1: Thanks
VardaValar1: hah, here's a stray comment about the Eagles. Gandalf,
after the rescue from the burning trees, asks the Eagles about carrying
them farther on their journey.
VardaValar1: The Eagles refuse, saying they would not go anywhere that
Men lived, because the Men would shoot at them with their great bows of
yew
VardaValar1: protecting their sheep.
ArPharazonV: Their fault for going after sheep?
VardaValar1: He admits that, aye.
VardaValar1: So he won't risk it. So there's a risk from the bows of Men. So much for flying the Ring to Mordor.
VardaValar1: (pardon the digression)
VardaValar1: Any other comments on the Secret Fire? There's actually quite a bit on it, but we did answer the question already.
VardaValar1: *picks up a hammer from the new conveyor belt gingerly*
VardaValar1: *taps it carefully on the pad on the table*
VardaValar1: *clinnnk*
VardaValar1: *waits and stares around*
VardaValar1: *heaves a sigh of relief and puts the hammer back*
ArPharazonV: That's new ;-)
VardaValar1: *turns around and sees that the plain became a deep valley, rapidly filling with water*
VardaValar1: Time to go swimming!
VardaValar1: *plunges in*
top
VardaValar1: After-meeting:
VardaValar1: Free chat. :-)
AriehnV: *sends radiant sunshine for Varda to enjoy the weather in the new river*
VardaValar1: *tosses soggy hair out of face* Why thank you!
AriehnV: *dries hair in a blink*
VardaValar1: Yay!
VardaValar1: *changes into a white dolphin*
VardaValar1: Sure glad Ar-Pharazon is so great about sending transcipts. :-)
ArPharazonV: Heh.
ArPharazonV: I'll give gaming news in a few minutes, working on some Diablo 3 bounty right now.
VardaValar1: Good luck!
ArPharazonV: I thinks. I found out I need more damage for some of the
bosses at this difficulty though, so gotta choose my bounties carefully
until I can upgrade that.
ArPharazonV: I thought I was just too weak, but apparently when Belial
enrages you're not supposed to survive it.. you're just supposed to
kill him first.
VardaValar1: Kill and be killed?
VardaValar1: Take him with you?
ArPharazonV: No, kill him before he enrages. He's on a timer on Torment difficulty :-)
VardaValar1: Makes sense
AriehnV: on bosses in Rift
talking tactics ^^ .. i did a few dungeons today for faster levelling
.. closing in on 65 there on my rogue .. which is the max level .. and
the bosses in all the dungeons look very familiar .from the raids we
know from wow ^
AriehnV: hopefully tomorrow i ll make it :-)
ArPharazonV: Oh? Is it WoW inspired?
AriehnV: not Lorewise
AriehnV: but game play wise with some additions
AriehnV: like they have world events which happen around the game
universe in short time of each other .. with invasions , you have to
close rifts and eventually defeat a world boss
AriehnV: it all gives a planar currency called planarifte and voidstones which u can use for buying gear
AriehnV: or mounts or such things
AriehnV: it also has more factions to gain reputation for
AriehnV: but apart from that it is not that different from WoW
ArPharazonV: reputation's always fun!
AriehnV: I also played LotrO
for two hours before i went for rp today ^^ , my burglar there is a
quarter into level 83 and adventuring and slaying herself through the
sutcrofts :-)
AriehnV: which is in the Eastemnet of Rohan if i remember right
VardaValar1: Grats, Arien :-)
AriehnV: ::-)
ArPharazonV: I'll launch into gaming news then!
VardaValar1: okies
ArPharazonV: Hmm. It looks like I don't have much for flashgaming news this week..
ArPharazonV: I'll give you two games.
ArPharazonV: http://www.kongregate.com/games/WolveWolve/tempala is the first one! A sort of action/puzzle game where you collect gems and make your way across platforms to chase a Tempala.
ArPharazonV: A tempala being, in this case, an impala in a temple.
ArPharazonV: I think.
ArPharazonV: *checks* yes, that would be right
ArPharazonV: http://www.kongregate.com/games/BenGAMEn/deep-underground is an action game with upgrades, where you have to navigate through caverns and pick up people who have apparently gotten lost.
ArPharazonV: Blizzard games!
ArPharazonV: Heroes of the Storm:
Still plodding along with my heroes, getting more used to the new
warrior hero I've been using, though still pretty bad with him.
ArPharazonV: Lunar Festival has started, along with a quest for 25
games to get a new portrait, and I'm well ahead of schedule there, so
that'll be fine.
ArPharazonV: Haven't tried the new wizard. But since my previous Diablo
Assassin type is level 10, she seems like a good followup when I need
to use one of those.
ArPharazonV: I certainly enjoyed playing a wizard in D3 :-)
ArPharazonV: Hearthstone: This week's brawl was one where each player constantly received random weapons. A bit random of course, but still fun to try.
ArPharazonV: I bought a whole bunch of packs, which I hadn't done in a
while, so I had plenty of gold. Ended up with 3 legendaries! That was
very lucky.
ArPharazonV: One of them is quite generally useful, too.
ArPharazonV: And also, all 9 classes are now level 39! Gave them all their level over the past week.
AriehnV: congrats
ArPharazonV: No new golden cards for 39, though, but they'll get new ones at 40. Onward to the next levels!
AriehnV: :-)
ArPharazonV: Thanks :-)
ArPharazonV: Diablo 3: Got my
seasonal crusader to level 70, and finished Season Journey chapter 3,
now working on 4. I've started Torment difficulty, as mentioned
earlier, but I still feel weak. Still, at Torment you have access to
all the legendary items and stuff, so it's an important threshold.
Higher Torment levels only give better dropchances. Which is still very
good.
ArPharazonV: I just need to survive a bit longer to upgrade my damage a
bit and then I should be able to breeze through Torment 1 quite easily.
ArPharazonV: Beyond that, the trick now is to build up my paragon
levels (currently at 30) and hopefully get the pieces of loot important
to my ability-build.
AriehnV: sounds good :-)
ArPharazonV: WoW next!
ArPharazonV: Still working on various stuff. I started trying for the
heirloom from the Darkmoon Arena this time. The Arena starts every 3
hours for the first week of every month, and I need 13 victories,
against quite a bit of competition. Got my first one last night when it
was almost empty, I hope it's just as empty when I go back in an hour
or so :-)
ArPharazonV: No new progress when it comes to raiding, or killing that one rare I'm trying to get the toy from...
ArPharazonV: I did finish my next Nemesis pvp quest, killing 500
bloodelves this time. 4 more to go for other races. It's rather slow,
but I hope I'll get it eventually.
ArPharazonV: Almost done upgrading all my pets to rare, with only a few
more to go. After that's done I can stop doing pet battles for now, as
well. While some things are hurrying along, others appear to be
stagnating.. but that's the way the game works, I guess!
ArPharazonV: Oh, and finally, I got my toy from the Blood Moon event in
Tanaan, so I don't have to worry about that anymore either. Took way
too long to get that one.
AriehnV: cool and collecting loads of honor on the way no doubt :-)
ArPharazonV: My honor's been maxed out for a long time, I don't really buy pvp gear. But I am getting a bit of conquest.
AriehnV: hehe i know i got it a feww weeks agou ^^#
AriehnV: the Blood moon one#
ArPharazonV: Heh, grats to you too then ;-)
ArPharazonV: Anyway, that'll be my gaming news for this week!
AriehnV: it was kind of funny that .. i dont know how long i collected
these shards to drain the moon with some randoms coming at times but
not bothering with taking the time for it .. then at ten percent left i
hollered on general to lend a hand and oh miracle they came from
everywhere and the thing was drained in 5 minutes ^^^
ArPharazonV: Hah, yes! It depends on the time of day, too, really. It took me about 40 minutes late one night.
AriehnV: kind of fun this tempala thing .. after working out how it works ^^]#
AriehnV: Bedtime for me :-)
