Before-meeting
Varda Valar (VardaValar1) has entered the room.
Ar-Pharazon-V (ArPharazonV) has entered the room.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya
Varda Valar: Aiya Phar :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: There, dropped out of WoW for now, will check back in 2
hours to see where the next invasions are.
Varda Valar: Sounds about right for the meeting :-)
Varda Valar: Any light shining from Arien?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, let me get back to bnet :-)
Varda Valar: sorry
Varda Valar: Only ones in LotRO left a bit ago
Ar-Pharazon-V: Urwendi poked.
Varda Valar: Thank you :-)
Varda Valar: Left a kin message in LotRO in case anyone can come.
Leaving the game now
Elladan V has entered the room.
Scott Lombardi: Aiya
Varda Valar: Aiya Elladan :-)
Scott Lombardi: just got back from the hospital
Scott Lombardi: :)
Scott Lombardi: well a little bit ago
Varda Valar: Welcome back :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya!
Scott Lombardi: thank you!
Scott Lombardi: gotta go to the pharmacy. I shall return shortly! :)
Varda Valar: Waiting for Arien, then planning to start
Ar-Pharazon-V: Still alive, then!
Varda Valar: Later!
Scott Lombardi: yes, I started with a fever of 104.5
Scott Lombardi: got ugly. So glad to feel better
Scott Lombardi: be back! Afk
Ar-Pharazon-V: Not sure what that is in Celsius, but I think 100's
normal for a human in F?
Varda Valar: 98 is normalish
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah.
Varda Valar: 98.5 F
Ar-Pharazon-V: Then what is the 100 calibrated by?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah, it's based on 32 and 212, which equate to 0 and 100
Celsius. Odd.
Varda Valar: Copying this:
Varda Valar: On the Fahrenheit scale, the freezing point of water is 32
degrees Fahrenheit (°F) and the boiling point is 212
°F (at standard atmospheric pressure). This puts the boiling
and freezing points of water exactly 180 degrees apart.[4] Therefore, a
degree on the Fahrenheit scale is 1â„180 of the interval between
the freezing point and the boiling point.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ye Americans and your weird units of measurement...
Ar-Pharazon-V: Right.
Varda Valar: Fahrenheit is a temperature scale based on one proposed in
1724 by the Polish-born German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit
(1686–1736), after whom the scale is named
Ar-Pharazon-V: Well you're the ones still using it ;-)
Varda Valar: The lower defining point, 0 °F, was established
as the temperature of a solution of brine made from equal parts of ice
and salt. Further limits were established as the melting point of ice
(32 °F) and his best estimate of the average human body
temperature (96 °F, about 2.5 °F less than modern
measurements)
Ar-Pharazon-V: There's your 98.5.
Varda Valar: Hey, what if we told you to change all your instruments
and books to Fahrenheit? heh. It would be an expensive mess.
Varda Valar: All other countries in the world now use the Celsius
scale, defined since 1954 by absolute zero being −273.15
°C and the triple point of water being at 0.01 °C.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Of course it'd be expensive if the majority has to adapt
to the minority ;-)
Varda Valar: I just mean it's the same idea. Huge mess to change over.
Varda Valar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrenheit
Varda Valar: US population: 324,413,040
Varda Valar: http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/us-population/
Varda Valar: That's a neat site
Varda Valar: Some of it is changed over, mostly where there's science,
medicine.
Varda Valar: Probably change all over eventually
Ar-Pharazon-V: World population: 7 and a half billion. You're still a
minority!
Varda Valar: No argument
Varda Valar: Just trying to answer why, not arguing correctness. :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Apparently Netherlands has the 66th spot in population.
Varda Valar: Would be bad if it had one of the higher populations,
considering the land mass.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Hmm. Is there a population density on this website?
Arien V (AriehnV) has entered the room.
Arien V: Aiya all :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya!
Varda Valar: The population density in the United States is 35 per Km2
(92 people per mi2).
Varda Valar: Aiya Sunshine :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: We've got 504 per km2.
Varda Valar: Sounds packed
Ar-Pharazon-V: Hmm, most of the higher-density ones are ministates and
the like, but Bangladesh and India are really packed for such big
countries.
Varda Valar: We were just looking at a world population site:
Varda Valar: http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/us-population/
Ar-Pharazon-V: Also, Taiwan's bigger than I thought.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Heck, it's bigger than the NL.
Ar-Pharazon-V: I wonder what Holy See is.
Varda Valar: Roman Catholics?
Varda Valar:
The Holy See is the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Catholic Church
in Rome, the episcopal see of the Pope, and an independent sovereign
entity. Wikipedia
Varda Valar: Yay wiki
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah, so it's Vatican City?
Ar-Pharazon-V: "Not to be confused with Holy See." Heh.
Varda Valar: Includes it
Varda Valar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_See
Varda Valar: Guess our chat is educational. :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: It's close enough. Vatican City is apparently the
territory for Holy See.
Varda Valar: Elladan went to the pharmacy, Gwaihir is, I think, at
work, so it looks as if we can start now.

Varda Valar: We are still going, yay! Since Oct 4, 1997
Varda Valar: Any other membership news?
Varda Valar: Hi from Fangorn, Sauron, and Bilbo. :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Pretty sure I saw Fladrif at some point this week.
Varda Valar: Very good :-)
Varda Valar: I have the alphabetically arranged list of LotRO players
ready, if I remember at the right time this time. :-)

Varda Valar: Nothing new on the Tolkien Site.
Varda Valar: Behind the scenes work on organization.
Varda Valar: And the Games Site is still being faithfully updated by
Eonwe. Please send him your game reviews. :-)
Varda Valar: We do have a couple of links, but they go under Tolkien

Bregalad/Quickbeam

Morwe

Varda
Varda Valar: Also in LotRO news,
Varda Valar: we are working with the Alliance to offer more events.
Varda Valar: They are listed on our Kin Message of the Day and on the
general News page.
Varda Valar: Considering the forum, but would like more feedback about
that.
Varda Valar: We can also offer our own events for Alliance teaming up.
Varda Valar: We also are involved with some other channels to fill in
various group runs.
Varda Valar: Including those at the highest raid levels.
Varda Valar: WoW:
Varda Valar: The Legion is coming! The Broken Shore
scenario, Demon Invasions, and Demon Hunters (for those who pre-ordered
the expansion through Blizzard) are now available. Make sure that before you begin the
scenario, you check for all vendors. There are some things you can get
*only* before going into the scenario, and some *only* inside the
scenario. If getting everything is an absolute goal, you may want to
check out the info on mmo-champion to ensure you do.
Varda Valar: Three previews are out this week:
Varda Valar: a Legion Dungeon Previews: Eye of Azshara and Neltharion’s
Lair
Varda Valar: Legion Zone Preview: Azsuna
Ar-Pharazon-V: Note, for the invasions
Varda Valar: Being Illidari: The Way Out Is the Way Through
Varda Valar: Check out the recent hotfixes.
Varda Valar: Sorry, what about the invasions?
Ar-Pharazon-V: If you're going to collect all the weapons, beware that the staff and the
agility-sword are not actually in the game. So no need to keep trying
the invasions until you get them.
Ar-Pharazon-V: In fact, they were removed from the preview later on as
well :-)
Varda Valar: eep. Good to know.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Rumours abound when people kept getting the other
weapons, but not those, and after a while it got confirmed on twitter
(and the preview changed).
Elladan V has left the room.
Varda Valar: Heroes of the Storm:
Varda Valar: A new patch is out.
Varda Valar: Hearthstone:
Varda Valar: The new adventure, One Night in Karazhan, is out.
Varda Valar: There was also an update this week.
Elladan V has entered the room.
Varda Valar: Did you have more on Hearthstone,
in general?
Elladan V: got d/c'ed apparently
Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiyata
Varda Valar: Welcome back, Elladan. And it happens.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Hmm, if you buy all of Karazhan in the first week for
real money, you get a fancy new card back?
Arien V: welcome back Elladan :-)
Elladan V: sorry for the delay. My dog, seeing me in out, now wants a
quick walk. Be back in 15m
Elladan V: :)
Ar-Pharazon-V: It's a nice one, but.. not worth the cash, I'd rather
spend my gold on it as the wings come out.
Ar-Pharazon-V: I already spent enough money on Blizzard this week, but
on what I'll tell you later :-)
Varda Valar: okies and ok
Varda Valar: Overwatch:
Varda Valar: Blizzard will soon (next Thursday) be
releasing a new animated short: "The
Last Bastion", at Gamescon.
Varda Valar: And that's the end of the gaming news from here. :-)
Varda Valar: A reminder about the Alliance events in general is on the
Aug 8 news. [LotRO]
Varda Valar: inter-kin events include a RT raid going on every saturday
at 15:30 servertime, west bree gate. Glewyn is the officer in charge.
Varda Valar: On every osunday (except august 14th), we have a
story-tell Cafe at our kinhouse at 13h servertime (8 Long street,
Haynwater, Bree-land), a kind of small ales and tales where people
talk, sing, tell stories
Varda Valar: Any other general comments, suggestions?
Varda Valar: Elladan wants to ask some WoW questions when we get to
open chat and he's back.
Varda Valar: On to
top
Varda Valar: Tolkien!
Varda Valar: Here's a nifty link that says it's "Tolkien: The Official Online Book Shop:
Varda Valar: http://www.tolkien.co.uk/page/Features+%26+News
Varda Valar: That's the news page for it. Here's the main page, takes
longer to load:
Varda Valar: http://www.tolkien.co.uk/index.html
Varda Valar: Flash and whatnot.
Varda Valar: Really nice collection of books shown, an idea of what's
out there that we might want to look for, not necessarily there.
Arien V: hehe i just openened the page and thought .. wow heaven l;)
Varda Valar: And one more link that might keep us
busy a good while:
Varda Valar: hehe, right on, Arien.
Varda Valar: This one is The Terence
Tiller Tolkien Trivia Quiz.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ooh, always fun, trivia.
Varda Valar: It's an article, but it also includes the quiz.
Varda Valar: http://www.tolkiensociety.org/blog/2016/07/the-terence-tiller-tolkien-trivia-quiz/#more-6277
Varda Valar: It's in answer to what questions can we ask at a contest
for Tolkien that are really hard.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Now those questions are trivial indeed.
Varda Valar: Written by Michael Martinez.
Varda Valar: heh
Varda Valar: Some are not actually over the books but real life,
including some from the the Letters
of JRRT.
Varda Valar: He came up witha neat formula for finding less used
trivia.
Varda Valar: Since his books are so messy from looking through them and
noting, he looked instead at the cleaner pages.
Varda Valar: That could work for us too. ^^
Ar-Pharazon-V: Where did Frodo, Sam,
and Pippin eat their second dinner after leaving Hobbiton? I
think I know that one!
Ar-Pharazon-V: ...Which is a rarity in that list.
Varda Valar: Give us a guess? We can look it up after.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Wasn't that at Gildor's party at Woody End?
Varda Valar: Now we get to look it up. No, I didn't hunt up all the
answers to this monster before brining it up. :-)
Varda Valar: Now is when having the books on Kindle might be handy.
Ar-Pharazon-V: I prefer to print out my ebooks :-)
Varda Valar: I meant for the Search function. It does have one?
Ar-Pharazon-V: It does? Don't know, I don't have ak indle.
Varda Valar: I just dig through my paper books mainly.
Ar-Pharazon-V: *a kindle.
Varda Valar: Whatever your ebooks are on.
Varda Valar: If I crash out, it may be due to the thunder-boomer storm
we're having.
Ar-Pharazon-V: PC, with adobe reader :-)
Varda Valar: Maybe it has a search?Sounds like a good system, bigger
screen.
Varda Valar: Heh, found the answer for what
Frodo's beds were stuffed with at Bag End: he misses his feather
beds after sleeping on a tree root.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Actually, there's a special adobe program for ebooks.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah!
Varda Valar: That question about what
was hanging besides the hobbits' doors when the Dwarves entered
Hobbiton on a waggon. Very sneaky. Lanterns.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Hmmm.
Varda Valar: Frodo, Pippin and Sam had
a tea as their last meal at Bag End (mentions several meals
ahead of that), a frugal supper by birches, then supper at a fir-wood.
Varda Valar: So I guess the fir-wood is the answer to the question
about the second dinner after Hobbiton.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, then I was a day off perhaps :-)
Varda Valar: You folks having any luck?
Elladan V: hello
Varda Valar: Welcome back.
Arien V: What surprise gift did
Gildor’s people give to Frodo, Sam, and Pippin?
Arien V: i think that was bread?
Ar-Pharazon-V: some good advice :-)
Varda Valar: Feel free to look it up. :-)
Varda Valar: “Who was Terence
Tiller?â€
Varda Valar: It's in the Letters.
Varda Valar: He's "the adapter and producer of the BBC Third Programme
version of the LotR". He asked JRRT's advice and the letter gives the
advice.
Arien V: hints and riddles?
Arien V: I don't think they left anything else behind
Ar-Pharazon-V: don't go to elves for advice, for they will say both yes
and no :-)
Elladan V: I only know one answer, and it's probably by far the easiest
of them all. What were Frodo's beds
stuffed with? Feather beds. I remember him saying how he missed
them while on their journey.
Varda Valar: Right.
Elladan V: was that already answered?
Varda Valar: Aye, but that's ok. You were away at the time.
Elladan V: hah
Elladan V: time to finish getting legendary miner in ultima online. I'm
here on the second monitor
Elladan V: and yes, Varda, I am getting ready to cook
Varda Valar: Enjoy :-)
Elladan V: a rustic Italian one pot dinner
Varda Valar: I'll be broiling chicken thighs in a bit.
Varda Valar: Sounds yummy, Elladan. :-)
Arien V: food and drink i think .. else i dont know :-)
Elladan V: with sausage, cannellini beans, tomatoes, carrot, celery,
and garlic
Arien V: hmm tempting
Varda Valar: All of these are ok to look up.
Varda Valar: Best guess by me is that it refers to the surprise
Gildor's people left behind, found on waking. Fruit, drink, and bread.
Varda Valar: The big things he did for them was an escort when the
Black Riders were about, and passing on messages to others to help the
hobbits.
Varda Valar: Is anyone else looking up answers?
Ar-Pharazon-V: More entertaining to watch you do it ;-)
Varda Valar: If not, we can let it go for now.
Varda Valar: I could be more in order, heh.
Varda Valar: *hammer jumps up and whops its head on the new hammer pad,
then runs back to the conveyor belt*
Varda Valar: *the presumably inert hammer pad lifts up half way and
shakes a skinny arm towards the conveyor belt*
top
Varda Valar: After-meeting!
Varda Valar: Elladan, you had a WoW
question?
Varda Valar: Now is a good time.
Elladan V: sorry yes
Elladan V: in UO at the moment too
Elladan V: for you WoW players, what is your feel on the demon hunter?
Varda Valar: Aye, catch you before you're deep into cooking.
Elladan V: ANY rogue killer is a friend of mine :)
Varda Valar: Diablo Demon Hunter is fun.
Elladan V: no WoW
Varda Valar: The other I leave to current WoW gamers. :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, I have not made a Demon Hunter yet. I've got a
physical Collector's Edition incoming, so no demon hunter for me until
launch day.
Ar-Pharazon-V: But i've heard some reports, and some of the players in
our raid tonight had switched to DH.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Sounds pretty fun, but the lack of self-healing is
annoying in raidfights!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Were there any specifics you wanted to know?
Elladan V: sorry Phar
Elladan V: I don't play anymore and don't plan to
Ar-Pharazon-V: Heh, ok.
Elladan V: but if I did
Elladan V: I'm a pvp nut
Elladan V: not much for pve
Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, I don't know about pvp with demon hunter.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Haven't talked to anyone who's tried it.
Varda Valar: Personal gaming the past week: SCBW with Fangorn and
Sauron. LotRO.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Fun :-)
Varda Valar: It was. :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: I'm trying to find a decent third game for my
flashgaming section...
Varda Valar: No rush
Ar-Pharazon-V: Alright, this'll do. Might be one I've mentioned before,
but who can remember?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Flashgaming:
Varda Valar: won't hurt to repeat. :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.kongregate.com/games/Mazapan/you-have-to-burn-the-rope
short platformer game where the title makes it clear what you have to
do. Don't expect to spend a lot of time on this one, but you can enjoy
the credits song!
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/hitting_stuff_at_a_building
is the second game, a breakout kind of game, where you have to throw
stuff at bricks above you and avoid the pieces that come down.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Rather silly, but nothing too inappropriate as far as I
could tell.
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.kongregate.com/games/zerocreativity1/polar-opposites
is the third game, a puzzle game where you have to get around levels
(top-view) by pulling or pushing stuff magnetically, and try not to get
injured. See how far you can get!
Arien V: hehe i see what you mean with this first game :)]
Arien V: just did it
Ar-Pharazon-V: Yay :-)
Varda Valar: :-)
Arien V: :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard gaming!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Heroes of the Storm:
Just my dailies, building some experience. I found out that Artanis
seems kinda buggy since last patch, which makes one of his abilities
rather impractical. Still, with a bit of attention I can manage.
Ar-Pharazon-V: No new levels.
Varda Valar: (Eonwe says Bofur was on WoW
too.) :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Diablo 3: Did a
bunch of rifts during the week, and another set of 25 bounties earlier
today, took me a few hours. Managed to get the seasonal crusader to 66,
so almost at max of 70, and then the real fun starts ;-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Season Journey chapter 1 complete, but chapter 2 needs
level 70 for most of it.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone:
some classes starting to approach level 43. The tavern brawl was
interesting; pick a class, the game (well, in-story, an Old God) gives
you a special new mechanic for that class, and a set deck to go with it.
Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V: Have been pretty busy with invasions!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Did the Broken Shore scenario with my druid main as
well, and got all the secret stuff (I'd looked it up in advance), so
that's nice.
Ar-Pharazon-V: I've gotten enough nethershards together to buy the pet,
the glaive you can keep on your account until you finally make a demon
hunter, and all the transmog stuff. Might save a bit more for 2 more
pets.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Out of the weapons to unlock, I've gotten most now.
Besides my main I've also done invasions with certain lower level alts,
switching specs as necessary to get all the weapons. I've got the bow
with my hunter, 2 weapons with my druid, 2 with my warrior, and one
with the mage. Still missing is another weapon for mage (wand) and 2
rogue weapons. So it's going well!
Ar-Pharazon-V: The armor sets are almost complete as well, but if I
don't manage to get the last few pieces, I can always spend
nethershards to buy the complete sets for unlocking appearances.
Ar-Pharazon-V: But since invasions will only become more frequent over
the coming weeks, I really don't see any trouble with that. It's mostly
the 3 missing weapons I need to get.
Ar-Pharazon-V: But my rogue and mage are too low to travel around much,
so I've got them doing the Westfall and Dun Morogh invasions only.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Still, with increases frequency, it should not be a
problem.
Ar-Pharazon-V: *increased
Ar-Pharazon-V: Raiding's started again as well today, with the first
few demon hunters in the team :-) Bit getting used to, but because the
bosses in Hellfire Citadel were weakened with the patch, doing the last
few bosses on heroic wasn't much of a problem.
Ar-Pharazon-V: And a few more people got their moose mounts as a result!
Ar-Pharazon-V: I've also finished the Big Adventure achievement, for
fighting all the pet tamers with a plushie elekk in the team, and got a
real elekk pet as reward. Supposed to be a bit of a Pinocchio story,
but I still got to keep the plushie as well :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: And in the meantime I've also continued visiting the
older instances to unlock old appearances.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Blackfathom Deeps and Gnomeregan finished, now working
on Scarlet Halls.
Ar-Pharazon-V: And finally, the big money spending I mentioned
earlier... I've bought a whole lot of Warcraft
books :-)
Varda Valar: ah hah!
Arien V: hark hark
Ar-Pharazon-V: The 14 most recent books from Beyond the Dark Portal
onwards (earlier books were out of print, sadly, but I've got pdf
backups I can print out in the meantime. I want to get the ebook for
Warcraft: Paragons too, maybe print that out, which contains a lot of
short stories.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Insert a ) somewhere in there, too.
Ar-Pharazon-V: So yeah, got a nice row of books sitting there, and have
been reading the Illidan novel in preparation for the Demon Hunter.
Ar-Pharazon-V: I also want to read Stormrage to prepare myself for the
Emerald Nightmare and the Val'Sharah questing zone, but before that I
should probably read War of the Ancients (which would be in pdf) or
maybe just the Chronicle will do, which I've already got as well.
Ar-Pharazon-V: I also bought the final Discworld book while I was at
it, btw, Shepherd's Crown, posthumously published.
Ar-Pharazon-V: So that collection is (sadly?) complete now as well.
Varda Valar: Congratulations, I think.
Varda Valar: Great way to be remembered.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Definitely.
Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my news for this week!
Arien V: Very well :-)
Arien V: i dont have Paragon or Illidan yet but, the others :-) I read
Stormrage
Arien V: very interesting
Arien V: some graphic novels as well , those that i found
Ar-Pharazon-V: From what I can tell, Illidan's quite funny in a way.
The final fight, for example, is a complete retelling of the bossfight
in the Black Temple, complete with assortment of players/adventurers of
different classes :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: I hope that's not too spoilerish, but I just had to
mention it.
Arien V: cool :-)
Arien V: yeah they tend to do that
Arien V: one of the graphic stories i ve got is the onyxia raid :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah, that's with Varian, right?
Arien V: or rather yeah or the old ONyxia story .. you remember that?
where you had to do all these quests which uncloaked her finaly?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah yes, Jailbreak and such.
Arien V: indeed :-D
Arien V: sad .. that shows how long we have been playing the game ^^
Ar-Pharazon-V: pff, the only sad thing about that is that newer players
can't do it as well ;-)
Arien V: true :-) .. suggest another Bronzedrake muddling with
timelines trying to corrupt newer players into following himn ?
Ar-Pharazon-V: That'd be nice!
Elladan V: in between la cucina a la computadora

Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh yes, the Arthas novel is among my books too :-)
Arien V: Namarie friends .. it is time to go upstairs where the sun

Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
Arien V: enjoy your day or night! Namarie :-)
