VardaValar1: Anyway, the Tolkien Society started a tradition for the
birthday that a lot of us are trying to keep going, and it is spreading.
VardaValar1: At 9pm at your local time on the birthday, you can solo or
in groups stand up, say "The Professor", and take a drink of your
preferred beverage.
VardaValar1: Thiis is called "The Toast".
VardaValar1: Adding something to our Tolkien Site listed as being for
this special occasion could be good too, but we haven't started that
attempt yet.
VardaValar1: In LotRO, a large group of bands came together on The Hill behind Bag End and played music for hours. :-)

holiday stuff, also a Doctor Who marathon I recorded and have been
watching over the weekend ;-) And also too much time in Molten Core.
karakedi25: I've seen 2/3 but have a pretty good idea what happens in the 3rd

ArPharazonV: Yep. Not too familiar with the old series, but they've
been showing 2 of the more recent series over the last month or so.

VardaValar1: Ok, I'm about to side-track into Dr. Who. *resists*. Maybe in a side window. :-)

ArPharazonV: Nazgul come to mind. Also, unless Battle for (of?) Middle
Earth lied to me, masses upon masses of crossbow-wielding orcs!
karakedi25: If I remember correctly, the chamber of Sammath Naur was interior, so they couldn't have just dropped it in.
ArPharazonV: They could've dropped off Frodo at the entrance.
VardaValar1: Aye, interior chamber was one of the serious problems.
AriehnV: if i get pictures of their size right .. massive birds at
lelast 3 times as big as the real thing .. i ean bigger if they could
carry riders on their back .. the eagles wouldnt have fit in and very
uncomfortable to enter the mountain
VardaValar1: A cloudy reek was sent out as well. It would have blacked
out airplanes, possibly herded the eagles into attack range of bows,
catapults, ballistas, bats, fell beasts, etc.
VardaValar1: Sauron had his own magic to use.
VardaValar1: Gandalf didn't want the One Ring in his own hand, and wanted it in no other than a very strong-willed Hobbit's.
VardaValar1: A dangerous wild eagle with the One Ring might make an interesting fan fic though.
ArPharazonV: Carry some brave hobbits. Maybe some decoys.
VardaValar1: Eagles were afraid of the bows of just shepherds. Flying visibly into enemy country was asking for trouble
VardaValar1: Carrying it in a beak or in claws would have been a problem. Maybe on a long chain or as you said carry Frodo.
VardaValar1: Shoot down the right eagle, shoot down Frodo.
VardaValar1: Frodo came in by stealth, with Aragorn's people acting as decoy and emptying the orcs out of Mordor.
VardaValar1: (Feel free to make comments.)
VardaValar1: The clouds of bats are mentioned in the Hobbit, coming
under cover of a storm. This could have also been used on an attack
versus the eagles.
VardaValar1: Everything would have been aiming at them.
VardaValar1: No side decoys.
VardaValar1: But there is a more important reason.
VardaValar1: Who do the eagles obey?
ArPharazonV: Gand- I mean Manwe.
VardaValar1: hehe

VardaValar1: Gandalf knew part of the picture, enough to do what he was supposed to.
VardaValar1: What were the wizards supposed to do for the peoples of Middle-earth?
ArPharazonV: Strengthen them to resist the forces that Morgoth left behind.

VardaValar1: In the Hobbit, when did all those eagles join into the fray?

ArPharazonV: When the peoples of middle-earth had united against the majority of the dark forces in that part of the world.

VardaValar1: Go ahead, Phar. It's pretty transparent.
ArPharazonV: The eagles in LotR also didn't join the fray until, again,
the majority of Sauron's forces were arrayed against the alliance of
the free people, and fate hang in the balance.
ArPharazonV: So it seems to me that they only join when the Wizards'
purpose has already been fulfilled, at which point they are content to
give an extra boost.
ArPharazonV: But they will never do their work *for* them.
VardaValar1: They didn't join in until the free peoples did all they could do.
ArPharazonV: Teach a man to fish...
VardaValar1: Exactly.
VardaValar1: By the time of the War of the Ring, the free people had learned a lot more.
VardaValar1: They were able to handle greater threats on their own and had to.
VardaValar1: In the Hobbit, we Valarites can see the hand of Manwe himself.
VardaValar1: Just before the eagles came, a mighty wind came up and blew away the storm.
VardaValar1: Then the eagles arrived in neat lines, many many of them.
ArPharazonV: A similar event happened in the War of the Ring, blowing away Sauron's darkness.
VardaValar1: Right.
VardaValar1: And when Saruman and when Sauron were disembodied, showing
as a smoky figure, they looked to the West but were blown away.
VardaValar1: I highly recommend reading the Hobbit for the little bit that the battle takes, knowing what we know now.
VardaValar1: The next topic is related.
VardaValar1: The question is: Who are the five armies in the Battle of the Five Armies?
VardaValar1: *Whose
VardaValar1: You guys know this or most of this. Fire away!
ArPharazonV: Obvious choices are orcs, wolves, dwarves, elves and men,
leaving the eagles, Beorn and the *other* bunch of holed up dwarves out
of the equation.

VardaValar1: Aiya Hamson and congratulations for navigating the craziness. :-)
ArPharazonV: Another choice is to group the elves with the men and the
orcs with the wolves, allowing 5 armies of a different nature, judging
by their not-quite-allegiance prior to the battle.
VardaValar1: We we were just starting the third topic: Whose are the five armies in the Battle of the Five Armies.
VardaValar1: Just before what Phar said then, he said:

dwarf army coming from the east (allied to the shut-ins), eagles coming
in as their own side but at the side of the good guys, and Beorn
because.. who knows where Beorn's loyalty really lies?
VardaValar1: We know Beorn's loyalty by what he did.
ArPharazonV: Yes, but he did not consider himself loyal to the other
factions, and did not share their exact goals prior to arriving at the
battle.
ArPharazonV: If you get my point.
VardaValar1: Aye
VardaValar1: Yet Gandalf knew he would be against the orcs and wargs/goblins and wild wolves.
HamsonV: I don't know. What he did was it done out of necessity or
because of it's advantage to those he deemed his responsibility to care
for?
VardaValar1: That can feel like the same thing.
ArPharazonV: He knew the outcome of the battle would decide the fate of
much of the northlands for a long time to come; no doubt he had his own
home in mind as well as those of his new allies.
HamsonV: The old "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" doesn't really apply here
VardaValar1: Enlightened self-interest.
VardaValar1: And yet, we know him by what he did.
ArPharazonV: Actions speak louder than words.
VardaValar1: He broke into the wall of orcs surrounding Thorin's dwarves and took the injured Thorin out.
VardaValar1: Beorn crushed Bolg.
VardaValar1: He could have left Thorin there.
HamsonV: True I didn't think of that
VardaValar1: No one would have blamed him for it.
HamsonV: Not at all
VardaValar1: Helps to have looked at the books recently. So many quick details.
VardaValar1: (We are talking books here, not the movies.)
HamsonV: Knowing Thorins actions I don't know if I would have saved him.
HamsonV: That's good since I haven't seen any but the first
VardaValar1: And yet, Thorin did new actions at the battle.
HamsonV: Once he came to his senses
ArPharazonV: I suppose he respected Thorin as a leader and noble, and
perhaps had seen Thorin fight against the orcs in the battle.
VardaValar1: Thorin rallied everyone. All of the free peoples were about to give up.
HamsonV: Well I don't know if he saw him fight them but he did see the outcome of at two encounters prior to the battles
HamsonV: onset
VardaValar1: Thorin was pretty obviious out there.
VardaValar1: Anyway, the topic was the question of what were the five armies.
VardaValar1: JRRT answers this in the book himself, so I've wondered why there was a question.
VardaValar1: But aye, one can see other answers than the one he gave.
VardaValar1: It's like the old question: Which Two Towers did JRRT mean in the title of the Two Towers. :-)
ArPharazonV: Haha, yes.
VardaValar1: JRRT tells us in the Hobbit that the five armies are
Goblins and Wild Wolves on one side, versus Elves, Men, and Dwarves on
the other side.
ArPharazonV: Well, that's the first answer I gave... but that leaves out several factions that played a part :-)
VardaValar1: Bats were very definitely present along with the storm,
but they were more air support and not intelligent. Just doing what
they were told to do.
VardaValar1: Goblins and Wargs were intelligent and had made alliance.
ArPharazonV: Then again, who named it the Battle of Five Armies? Bilbo
never saw the Eagles and Beorn fight, as I recall, and he wrote the
book :-)
VardaValar1: Although the Wargs/Wild Wolves did turn on the dying or dead goblins for meals.
VardaValar1: Bilbo called out when he saw the eagles coming.
ArPharazonV: No sense in letting good food go to waste.
VardaValar1: Practical doggies.
VardaValar1: A little vengeance too, one could suspect, for being treated like mere beasts.
ArPharazonV: "He had the nerve to put a saddle on me! Can you believe that?"
VardaValar1: The birds of Erebor played their part, but were not actually armies that wanted to enter the fight. They helped.
VardaValar1: Gandalf and Bilbo were singles, not armies.
VardaValar1: Beorn was a single also, not an army.
ArPharazonV: Ehh, he was practically an army by himself.
VardaValar1: No argument there. :-)
VardaValar1: The eagles didn't show up until the free peoples would have been destroyed.
VardaValar1: If the free peoples had been able to handle it, they probably would not have fought.

Varda Valar: One thing that will not be clear in the movie is a line by Thranduil,

Valar: Does anyone remember what happened finally to the Arkenstone?
Varda Valar: The Arkenstone is the jewel called the
heart of the mountain. It was what Thorin most wanted. Bilbo took it
and gave it to Bard to try to buy peace.

VardaValar1: You can see why we use Phar's copy of the transcript
rather than mine. Mine is usually much worse than that, including time
stamps and tables for each person's speech.
ArPharazonV: Thranduil took his sword back in Mirkwood, eh?
VardaValar1: Right, when he was captive.
VardaValar1: Bilbo did not steal it back.
VardaValar1: So it really was "the axes of the dwarves are upon you".
VardaValar1: They re-armed at Dale and at Erebor.
VardaValar1: From Erebor, they took excellent armor so them made a good flying wedge for the others to rally behind.
VardaValar1: *they
VardaValar1: Anyway, back to the question of the five armies.
ArPharazonV: When you have an entire treasury at your disposal...
HamsonV: LOL
VardaValar1: Of course JRRT had a version before the fnal one.
VardaValar1: The fight at first was in the Vale of the Anduin instead of by Erebor.
VardaValar1: Instead of the Dwarves, they had an army of Beornings led
by Beorn, or Beorn leading bears that are implied to be Beornings.
ArPharazonV: Where is this from? The Hobbit got, rather sadly, skipped over in the History of Middle Earth.
VardaValar1: In the book, many Beornings were outside Beorn's house. He was not the only one, but he was the biggest.
HamsonV: That would be quite menacing! But again where is this in the book I don't remember that at all
VardaValar1: But the idea of it being the dwarves' fight was important
to the story, so the whole thing was changed to being a fight at Erebor.
VardaValar1: So the Vale of Anduin fight didn't see print.
HamsonV: I like it yet another reason to read it again :-)
VardaValar1: The bit about the many Beornings shows up during the visit of the dwarves to Beorn.
VardaValar1: It was a repeated version of introducing so many dwarves to a reluctant host that Gandalf had done with Bilbo.
VardaValar1: A few at a time.
VardaValar1: Beorn didn't trust them and checked out their story.
VardaValar1: Later on, Bilbo hears a lot of bears, and they are outside dancing, by the hundreds.
VardaValar1: So that was where the Beorning army would have been drawn from.
VardaValar1: But that takes away from the dwarven story so much that it was made lesser.
VardaValar1: Beorn still has an important part with his rescue of
Thorin (he apparently understands the concept of redemption quite
well), and crushes Bolg.
VardaValar1: Radagast does not show up, but it seems quite reasonable
that he would have been involved in working with the eagles and the
Beornings.
ArPharazonV: But where are you getting this early versoin from?
ArPharazonV: *version
VardaValar1: An underutilized character.

VardaValar1: John D. Rateliff’s The History of The Hobbit (2007)
HamsonV: Cool is that still in print?
VardaValar1: The original five armies were all free people.
VardaValar1: If not, I'll bet they reprint it. :-)
VardaValar1: While the Hobbit is still being revived by the movies.
VardaValar1: The five armies of good guys then were the Woodelves, Dwarves, Eagles, Men, and Bears.
VardaValar1: Goblins and Wolves were the two they fought.
ArPharazonV: Ah, that looks good, I'll keep it in mind.
VardaValar1: In the actual book, so many goblins were wiped out (and wargs) that the world had peace for a long time.
ArPharazonV: There you go, the 7 armies I mentioned ;-)
HamsonV: Ouch out of my price range, 237.58 plus shipping
VardaValar1: Not least because the White Council drove off the
Necromancer/Sauron from Dol Guldur (although he was planning on leaving
anyway).

to 199 mounts now, thanks to getting the second mount from Halaa (nice
that there are some garrison quests can give the battle tokens for that
particular piece of old content, since they're practically impossible
to get the old-fashioned way now). Just need one more for the 200-mount
achievement.

ArPharazonV: As for me in WoW, I spent a lot of time doing Molten Cores, sometimes 2 on one evening.
ArPharazonV: Total count, ending yesterday because I was doing normal raiding today, 15 Molten Core runs for the anniversary.
HamsonV: Haven't played wow in over 5 years
ArPharazonV: I never got the Flames of Ragnaros weapon enchant, most
people didn't; I've seen runs where they didn't even drop for anyone,
and that's in a raid of 40 people.
ArPharazonV: I did finally manage to get the pet though, so I won't
have to spend 30k gold on one in the Auction House; got it in attempt
12, and even a second one in attempt 14; not sure if I'll sell it, keep
it for myself or give it to some friend who desperately collects them
but didn't get the chance to loot or afford one. We'll see.

fact, I got a major upgrade today, switching from 600 ilevel gloves to
a warforged 676 ilevel from heroic Highmaul.
ArPharazonV: That's the kind of thing that only happens once in an
expansion, really, things upgrade much slower as you get more up to
date with current gear ;-)

ArPharazonV: Garrison is improving nicely too, got my barn to level 3
and am now producing savage blood. It does mean the beasts I have to
trap are rarer and a lot tougher, but I'm already over the threshold
where I can just stand still and fight them without having to move from
their area attacks, though self-healing is quite useful.
ArPharazonV: I'm looking forward to seeing how much easier it gets as I gear up throughout the expansion.
ArPharazonV: If you ever get a level 3 barn at any point, but aren't
planning on keeping it permanently, you should try to make your way up
to the attic (with some movement stunts required to get up there)
because there's a unique pet you can get, a pygmy cow. I used a goblin
glider to get in myself.
ArPharazonV: And that's pretty much it for WoW for me.

new season started, Marauding Maraad, with a draenei-themed cardback,
based on a Warcraft npc who plays a central role in the earlier parts
of Warlords of Draenor, as well as having featured in earlier
expansions.
ArPharazonV: Called Maraad, in case that wasn't clear.
ArPharazonV: So if you want a draenei cardback, get to rank 20 before the end of January!
ArPharazonV: Haven't made much progress levelling the 9 classes (it
will take a while for them to get to the next level anyway) but I've
been looking into decks I've got my eye on for the future, based on the
new expansion pack. So that list is being updated slowly :-)

AriehnV: its qute nice that card game i ve got it too .. but i cant
really get into it but i know a lot who are addicted to it :-)
ArPharazonV: Slowly building up my card-collection of the expansion.
Druid is still ahead of the other classes there. It's just too bad that
the viable decks for druid in general tend to make use of a lot more
epics than other classes, so it doesn't really help me all that much.

ArPharazonV: I haven't done too much new stuff. A nonogram puzzle game
that I mentioned several times in the past, and still play daily for
the daily puzzle, has gotten a new update; a set of levels which mostly
consists of the old daily puzzles for 2014 and also several new ones.
It being months and months since I played the first ones in the set, it
doesn't feel too familiar yet, and I think I'll be happy doing them all
over again just to finish the set :-)

got the hang of, which appears half-hidden behind a paywall, and which
I only played for a "badge" on the kongregate site.. a badge which

fixed, I'll have it, so yeah...
ArPharazonV: Oh, and I've also been playing a game which I might have
mentioned in the past, called Solarmax 2. Only tried it a bit back
then, but have since then gone through the entire game on easy
difficulty and halfway through medium, and I'll attempt to get even
further :-) It's a strategy game where you have to conquer planets one
by one, and your opponents do the same.
