ArPharazonV: Aiya!
VardaValar1: Superbowl will be going during the meeting.
ArPharazonV: Ye crazy americans and yer sports.
VardaValar1: I have no particular interest in the Superbowl. :-)
VardaValar1: Still crazy though.
ArPharazonV: hehe
ArPharazonV: Am I still here? :-)
VardaValar1: Aiya :-)
ArPharazonV: Good! Never know.
VardaValar1: oops, my timer seems to have moved to the kitchen, sorry
AriehnV has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Sunshine :-)
VardaValar1: Invitations sent
AriehnV: aiya Starqueen
AriehnV: :-)
VardaValar1: Gorlim, Elladan, and Elwing are in LotRO
ArPharazonV: Aiya
VardaValar1: Elladan seems to be in the wrong AIM version to join in
AriehnV: aiya Cala
AriehnV: ah
ArPharazonV: Too bad.
VardaValar1: ok, out of LotRO now
VardaValar1: If anyone has a Tolkien topic or thinks of one during the meeting, feel free to whisper me.

VardaValar1: Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
VardaValar1: A star shines on the hour of our meeting!
VardaValar1: Membership:
VardaValar1: We have a new member this week, an ent has joined us named Finglas, or Leaflock in the Common tongue.
VardaValar1: He joined us in LotRO, having come back to the game after a fairly long absence. Good sense of humor. You'll like him if you meet him. :-)
VardaValar1: He moved from the UK to the US, now in Pennsylvania
VardaValar1: He's an archaeologist who bird-watches for fun.
VardaValar1: Any other member news?
VardaValar1: Superbowl is going on today, so people may be scarce or not paying attention online.
VardaValar1: I think Pallando is away from the keyboard, usually true this time of day.
VardaValar1: Arien, are you still in the rp group right now?
AriehnV: no not at the moment
AriehnV: i ve seen Finglas online this week and Elladan :-)
VardaValar1: Oh good! :-)
VardaValar1: Glad the time of day overlapped for you all
AriehnV: yeah .. the guy hadnt been to bed in fact .. dry it was 7 am for him or so

VardaValar1: They had some questions about if the dwarves seemed at all Scottish
VardaValar1: heh
AriehnV: they do seem to be .. in all kind of movies
VardaValar1: either in the book or in LotRO
VardaValar1: Figured you'd be able to know if they are.
ArPharazonV: Do we know whether or not they wore kilts? :-)
VardaValar1: Never saw any such suggestion that they did, Phar. :-)
AriehnV: hehe a thing the dwarves seem to have with scots or celts in general is love of colour, fighting and beer
AriehnV: :-)
VardaValar1: Color! Hadn't thought of that.
ArPharazonV: And the accent.
AriehnV: also their niggling with monou aka love of gold
AriehnV: niggling with money
VardaValar1: Downright dragonish.
AriehnV: love of music as well
VardaValar1: I wonder if dragons would enjoy drinking too, if they could find enough. Beware the cellars are under attack!
ArPharazonV: There goes Thranduil's wine collection.
VardaValar1: Are those traits so uniquely Celtic?
VardaValar1: oops
ArPharazonV: I believe the ancient Belgians are also known for their love of beer and fighting, but not sure :-)
AriehnV: loyalty ... oh dear think all personal quarrels d be forgotten and on the dragan together to save the beer!
VardaValar1: For sure!
VardaValar1: Dwarves kept even their language mostly secret. Clannish, it seemed especially as in dwarves vs any others of the free peoples.
VardaValar1: The new fighting slogan: Protect the beer!
AriehnV: hehe
VardaValar1: On to Web news:
ArPharazonV: I think there's a Warcraft joke about that too. Not sure.
VardaValar1: Probably. WoW has a joke for most things. :-)
VardaValar1: One of its charms.
VardaValar1: Gaming Site:
VardaValar1: Eonwe continues to help us out, keeping the gaming news up even if he can't be here in person.
VardaValar1: Tolkien Site, new art.
VardaValar1: The Bohemian Weasel-(T) contributed to a Hobbit card set for Cryptozoic Entertainment.
VardaValar1: She says no more sketch cards for her. We'll see...
VardaValar1: Anyway, it was a picture of the eagles carrying Thorin's Company. Gold leaf is used on the wings.
ArPharazonV: Sounds expensive.
VardaValar1: New section for it:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/art/gallery/BohemianWeasel/characters/eagles/eagles.htm
VardaValar1: These section set-ups are handy for linking to Encyclopedia articles for illustrations.
VardaValar1: Or for special uses such as the rotating images on the index page, or a special shot for the News.
VardaValar1: That's all the new Tolkien stuff up for the week.
VardaValar1: We're really supposed to be most focused on articles, but maybe we'll hit our stride on that again. We're far from done with the Encyclopedia, and some articles are closer to place-holders.

VardaValar1: On to Gaming:
VardaValar1: From Eonwe's work on the Games Site:
VardaValar1: Diablo 3:
VardaValar1: A reminder of what to expect for the end of Season 1 has been posted, including announcements of when Season 1 ends and Season 2 begins.
VardaValar1: Hearthstone:
VardaValar1: A new patch is released: patch 2.1.0.7628.
VardaValar1: World of Warcraft:
VardaValar1: You can see the PTR patch note updates and the hotfixes to the live servers.
ArPharazonV: There's more general news for Hearthstone, which I'll give in a bit :-)
VardaValar1: General news is fine here, unless you'd like to wait for your entire news report that you give in After-meeting.
VardaValar1: This is the general news section.
ArPharazonV: I know, but you're in WoW already.
VardaValar1: Backing up to Hearthstone...
VardaValar1: Go ahead Phar :-)
ArPharazonV: Well, the February season has now begun, with a special focus on the Lunar New Year/Lunar Festival. It starts with February's monthly card back representing the festival;
ArPharazonV: unfortunately it's not as nelfy or nocturnal as I'd hoped, doesn't even feature a moon; but it seems more of a clone of the red-coloured Pandemonium card back from somewhere last year. April I believe.
VardaValar1: Looks kind of like a little robot?
ArPharazonV: http://us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/blog/17796673
ArPharazonV: I believe it's based on a Pandaria festival lantern of sorts.
ArPharazonV: So it still kinda fits, but not as much as I'd hoped.
ArPharazonV: On top of that, we might see more related to the Lunar Festival this month, as some data-mining shows, but it's all quite vague. So we'll see. Hoping for a special Omen-fight :-)
ArPharazonV: Well, that's the Hearthstone news, carry on!
VardaValar1: Thank you for the news. :-)
ArPharazonV: (I do like one of the comments comparing it to an excel sheet)
VardaValar1: We LotRO players have been enjoying an extra experience weekend, 25%. Great time to bring in alts that need worked up.
VardaValar1: A bunch of players have been moving to Landroval, where the action is.
VardaValar1: A number of servers are expected to be closed down, so some are waiting for hoped-for free transfers.
VardaValar1: This gives us an opportunity to pick up new recruits. All members are welcome to scout for people whose company they enjoy that read LotR. Courtesy is a requirement, as you all know.
VardaValar1: Any other gaming news?
VardaValar1: Any other business, comments, suggestions?

VardaValar1: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: We have a new post on the rp in the forum. :-)
VardaValar1: For general chat, considering its Superbowl day in the US,
ArPharazonV: I was reading your post earlier this week...
VardaValar1: What do we think folks in Middle-earth did for fun? And let's not leave out Valinor.
ArPharazonV: The "present", what's in the pouch.. is that supposed to be the blade? I may have lost track.
VardaValar1: Good to hear, Phar. :-)
VardaValar1: Nope, not the blade. Auros has that. This is new.
VardaValar1: I tried to make clues, but guess they need work.
VardaValar1: One reason Fainan has been wanting to leave soon.
ArPharazonV: Secrets are fine :-) I've got a hidden agenda of my own which I've already hinted/revealed somewhat, but will come into play later :-)
VardaValar1: It's not actually a secret from the fellow writers. I intended it to be guessable from the post. Guess it needs work.
ArPharazonV: I could just have forgotten. It has been some time since we last discussed where we were going.
ArPharazonV: And I haven't really bulk-read the archive in a while either.
VardaValar1: We're supposed to be chasing the sorceror, trying to stop him from tearing up Mirkwood, and rescuing your brother.
VardaValar1: Auros has the blade. Elrond wanted him to pick it up, but when Auros got it from Meren, he didn't do it in a way that Meren found polite, so she's annoyed with him some more.
VardaValar1: Otherwise Meren would be nothing but a happy camper and stay buried in the library for a few Ages.
VardaValar1: Frali seems to be partying a bit, might be doing that in wait mode though.
VardaValar1: Estarion has been so stealthed since we entered Rivendell that there's some question that he ever entered at all.
VardaValar1: Auros just said goodbye to an old friend who is on his way to Valinor, so he's a bit down at the moment.
ArPharazonV: Hmm, and I appear to be wandering around somewhere or maybe resting, while waiting for a flock of birds.
ArPharazonV: But that tells me nothing about what you've got there :-)
VardaValar1: That's because it's never been mentioned before, just part of why she's been wanting to leave soon.
VardaValar1: It fits in a pouch, comes from Mirkwood, a "present" for the sorceror and/or his people that may serve as a distraction.
ArPharazonV: We have seen it before I assume? In a book?
VardaValar1: If it sits too long, Fainan fears the "present" will "unwrap" itself with unpleasant consequences.
VardaValar1: We have not seen it before.
ArPharazonV: Allright.
VardaValar1: o wait
VardaValar1: Yes, such things are common knowledge to Mirkwood's folk
VardaValar1: but she hasn't shown it to anyone other than Elrond yet.
VardaValar1: Elrond says that in Rivendell, its development is held in check so she need not worry.
VardaValar1: It should last until we're ready to put it in Angmar.
ArPharazonV: I'm looking forward to finding out what it is then :-)
VardaValar1: ok, so not good enough on the hints. :-) Maybe I should work on that.
ArPharazonV: Perhaps I should re-read The Hobbit if it's in there?
VardaValar1: No, it's something you know about already.
VardaValar1: What may be throwing you is that it's in a pouch.
VardaValar1: It's "developing".
ArPharazonV: A.. plant of sorts?
VardaValar1: Alive. You're on the right track.
VardaValar1: Not fair that you're the only one guessing.
ArPharazonV: I could leave it if you want :-)
VardaValar1: If you have more guesses, please feel free!
ArPharazonV: Something alive, but not specifically plant, that makes it an animal.
VardaValar1: Aye
ArPharazonV: An animal, in fact, which fits in a pouch.
VardaValar1: Surely must be a cute puppy!
ArPharazonV: A bird? A mouse? An insect or spider?
ArPharazonV: A fish? Might be a watertight pouch.
VardaValar1: Too many guesses at once, kind of like Gollum with his two guesses at once about what the hobbit had in his pocket.
ArPharazonV: Or is it a bigger pouch than I give it credit for?
ArPharazonV: Could be a puppy.
VardaValar1: Not a fish, not all that big a pouch.
VardaValar1: Angmar would surely melt before a puppy.
ArPharazonV: It's a Pikachu!
VardaValar1: Surely! [Note: The real answer is figured out! Later during After-meeting.]

VardaValar1: Anyway, the general topic we had up for tonight was:
VardaValar1: What do we think folks in Middle-earth did for fun? And let's not leave out Valinor.
AriehnV: a bird
AriehnV: a bird in the puch
VardaValar1: Dragging a bird in a pouch all the way from Mirkwood? Might smell by now.
ArPharazonV: They sing, they dance, they eat (though that might come from other desires).
AriehnV: an egg hatching?
ArPharazonV: An egg, could be.
AriehnV: they dance
VardaValar1: More than one maybe?
AriehnV: fish and hunt
AriehnV: craft
ArPharazonV: Bit of sparring.
ArPharazonV: Bit of horse-riding.
ArPharazonV: Tree-climbing (hey, Gollum seemed to enjoy it).
VardaValar1: Tree-climbing, hadn't thought of that. Could be.
ArPharazonV: Make music with more than their voice.
ArPharazonV: I wonder if mountaineering was a thing.
VardaValar1: Lots of instruments mentioned as being played in Middle-earth, aye.
VardaValar1: Likely
ArPharazonV: I can see the dwarves making treks up the mountains, trying to reach the tops and shout at the top of their lungs.
VardaValar1: All sound likely so far. I wonder what the dwarves would shout?
VardaValar1: For Durin!
ArPharazonV: Some odd cultural echo-puns or something.
VardaValar1: Why not? Gimli had a sense of humor.
ArPharazonV: I'm sure a lot of people liked to swim, though perhaps not most hobbits :-)
ArPharazonV: And use boats, for that matter.
VardaValar1: True
VardaValar1: Story-telling
VardaValar1: Feasting
ArPharazonV: Story-writing.
ArPharazonV: Genealogy was popular in some places.
VardaValar1: Calligraphy, illumination
VardaValar1: Knucklebones (form of dice)
VardaValar1: Horseshoe throwing
ArPharazonV: I recall Dale being a good source of toys.
VardaValar1: Oh, right!
VardaValar1: Toy-making could be for fun and then built into a profession.
ArPharazonV: Any sports as we know em?
ArPharazonV: Golf, of course :-)
VardaValar1: I've played horseshoes. :-)
ArPharazonV: Hehe, true.
VardaValar1: True! Good old Golfimbul.
ArPharazonV: What would the Orcs do for fun?
VardaValar1: Playing washers might have been possible, since they had some kinds of machinery.
VardaValar1: Some of the same things, gambling with knucklebones, fighting.
ArPharazonV: Hunting.
VardaValar1: In LotRO, they show orcs doing a shuffle-dance around campfires, shrines.
ArPharazonV: Though they were likely less subtle about it.
ArPharazonV: Hah, sounds interesting :-)
VardaValar1: Horse-racing, other critter racing. I've been involved in turtle-racing.
ArPharazonV: ...Not mounted I assume.
ArPharazonV: Also, turtle or tortoise? :-)
VardaValar1: Turtle-racing is to set them inside circles, and see how far out they get from the center fastest if ever.
VardaValar1: Pond sliders, tortoises.
VardaValar1: A happy lively pond slider can really go. :-)
ArPharazonV: Heh.
VardaValar1: Red-eared turtles from the petshops are well known pond sliders.
VardaValar1: I wonder if they had jousting? Not mentioned, but they had knights.
ArPharazonV: Ah, some browsing tells me that turtles are used for the whole lot in American English but only for the aquatic ones (contrast to tortoises) in British English.
VardaValar1: Feasting is mentioned. Thranduil's people had feasts in his halls, and special banquets that fought the mirk of the woods. It was lighter there after the feasts.
VardaValar1: Thanks! Good to know.
ArPharazonV: Jousting... I can see jousting going on in Gondor.
ArPharazonV: Presumably Arnor as well, and perhaps Gondolin.
VardaValar1: We also had box turtles, let them go afterwards, usually well-fed in thanks.
VardaValar1: Possibly
VardaValar1: Gondolin may have had more merriment than most places, being a safer place than most.
ArPharazonV: But it must also have had a way to keep its army trained.
VardaValar1: And doing it the fun way would be smart.
ArPharazonV: Right.
VardaValar1: Dancing. We know for sure of the Springle-ring of the Hobbits, a dance.
ArPharazonV: ...Got a turtle in that pouch of yours?
VardaValar1: And like you said, war-style games: archery, swordsmanship
VardaValar1: Hammer and dagger throwing
VardaValar1: Nope :-)
ArPharazonV: Also, think they had other ball-sports? Could see some young Hobbits having a football (soccer) tournament or something.
VardaValar1: Aye, they surely did of some kind
ArPharazonV: If they could find a field that was flat enough :-)
VardaValar1: Doesn't have to be all that flat just for fun. :-)
ArPharazonV: Ahh, dwarves and their hammer-throwing. With a toy as reward!
VardaValar1: Great!
VardaValar1: Chess is very old. Part of the fun was carving the figures.
ArPharazonV: Or checkers for those whose crafting is not so detailed :-)
VardaValar1: Use rocks, maybe Pente.
VardaValar1: Philsopher games
ArPharazonV: Card-games perhaps.
VardaValar1: Wrestling
VardaValar1: Probably. They had paper
VardaValar1: Artwork
VardaValar1: Whittling
ArPharazonV: Sculpting. Tapestry.
VardaValar1: True
VardaValar1: Quilting
VardaValar1: Shall we call it here? We can suddenly pop up with more Middle-earth fun ideas in the middle of free chat. Non-sequiturs are Us!
VardaValar1: *swings hammer for fun*
VardaValar1: *tinnnnnnng*
top

VardaValar1: After-meeting!
VardaValar1: Free chat!
VardaValar1: Talking is also something people do for fun. :-)
ArPharazonV: I hear some people are fond of debating. Never saw the appeal of it myself.
VardaValar1: Figuring out all the pros and cons for each side, then trying to argue both sides and win. Quite the intellectual exercise.
ArPharazonV: Allrighty. Gaming stuff.
VardaValar1: Okie dokie
ArPharazonV: Hearthstone: Got my first level 32, the warrior; the rest is still at 31, but getting closer. 32 is a new golden basic card, so the incentive is there!
VardaValar1: Grats :-)
ArPharazonV: D3: Season 2 starting this week, I suppose I'll start a new seasonal hero in the next weekend. Witch Doctor might be fun to try.
VardaValar1: It seems fun. :-)
VardaValar1: I tried it a bit
ArPharazonV: Not tried it yet; my first character was a demon hunter, and then a barbarian for season 1.
ArPharazonV: I want to try them all out over the course of the seasons.
ArPharazonV: But witch doctor seems rather exotic, and I like the thought of supporting him with pets and dark magics.
ArPharazonV: Legends of Equestria: the open weekend I mentioned last meeting ended on monday; I did spend some more time running around. There was a lot more new area than I had anticipated; a new town, large fields, and roads connecting the major cities and older locations from different and new directions.
ArPharazonV: Still missed a good deal of it, but it's great to see it growing so nicely. I just hope they'll be making a world map at some point (offline or in-game) because I got lost a few times exploring everything ;-)
ArPharazonV: Let's see...
ArPharazonV: I believe Heroes of the Storm is doing some Lunar Festival stuff as well, but Arien has more experience with that game. I do want to try it out eventually, but only so many hours in the day.
ArPharazonV: Speaking of: Flashgaming!
VardaValar1: That is a drawback to days.
ArPharazonV: I'll give 2 games this week.
ArPharazonV: One is a sort of strategy/adventure game where you have to lead a caravan across a map, visiting many cities; buying stuff in one town and selling it where it has a higher value.
ArPharazonV: Fight bandits along the way, upgrade your party, and do one of two questlines (or even both!) where you either join the bandits or the enforcers (the police force basically).
ArPharazonV: And there are a few other features as well.
ArPharazonV: http://www.kongregate.com/games/ArmorGames/frontier is the game.
ArPharazonV: For the second one I'll give a multiplayer card-game called War of Omens. Bit of a money-grabber, but you can still collect everything without ever spending any cash. I don't know if I'll continue after getting the badges, but it is quite fun to build up a collection and work through the story mode with it.
ArPharazonV: I haven't played too many card games, so I don't know if the way it works is rare or unique, but both the way you collect (and upgrade!) cards, as well as the gameplay itself, uses some mechanics that I've never seen before, which is nice.
ArPharazonV: http://www.kongregate.com/games/fifthcolumngames/war-of-omens
ArPharazonV: Different factions too, with completely different strategies as far as I can tell, but you're eased into them and there's a good (but optional!) tutorial for it.
ArPharazonV: Hmmm... WoW next.
ArPharazonV: Got my first piece of mythic raiding gear from a follower mission; apparently those missions only unlock after you've cleared the Highmaul raid on heroic, so it's a reward for our raiding progress, even if we've not killed any bosses on mythic difficulty yet :-)
ArPharazonV: Finally got around to doing some more zone-quests, getting a good chunk of Nagrand done in one evening.
VardaValar1: bunch of playing
ArPharazonV: Along the way I've also built my Stables in the garrison, and unlocked level 2, which has set me along the path of getting 7 or 8 new unique mounts, which I'm looking forward to!
ArPharazonV: But the whole process takes a week or two, so it should take a bit more time in my WoWing.
ArPharazonV: *take up
ArPharazonV: It'll be worth it though!
ArPharazonV: Having the Stables-equivalent (the Corral) set up in Nagrand also gives my druid a 100% speedboost in cat and bear forms while in Nagrand, making the capture of beasts for the barn a lot faster as well.
ArPharazonV: I feel like I'm finally starting to make some good progress again :-)
VardaValar1: yay!
ArPharazonV: Then again, I think that every week. We'll see what the next week brings!
VardaValar1: :-)
ArPharazonV: That's my gaming for this week, I think.
VardaValar1: Thank you, Phar :-)

VardaValar1: Oh, on the guesses, you and Arien just about had what was in the pouch.
ArPharazonV: Something hatching from an egg?
VardaValar1: Development arrested, according to Elrond.
ArPharazonV: Well, fair enough.
VardaValar1: That development was one thing worrying Fainan
ArPharazonV: Can't imagine what it is yet, I'll give it some more thought over the week :-)
VardaValar1: You did imagine
VardaValar1: Just I won't take a string of answers as one answer. :-)
ArPharazonV: Well I haven't imagined the right thing yet!
ArPharazonV: Unless you're hatching spiders.
VardaValar1: There you go!
VardaValar1: That should give the Angmarim white hair.
VardaValar1: Have those things all in their tunnels and ruins.
ArPharazonV: Ah, that's neat!
VardaValar1: Could be distracting
VardaValar1: Grats on getting the answer!

AriehnV: yes i was trying out Heroes of the stor
AriehnV: Storm
AriehnV: quite nice graphics
VardaValar1: Ah, good to hear.
AriehnV: if you played DotaS or League of Legends its cool
AriehnV: the characters you play are various heroes from the blizzard games
AriehnV: oh for me i played LotRo a bit :-)
VardaValar1: yay
AriehnV: i met Elladan and Finglas as i said and my Guardian is 70 now and through on the way to Dunland
AriehnV: getting to meet this hunter guy soon :-) [Note: LotRO: The Huntsman, screenshot from LotRO by Varda.]
VardaValar1: Blond? :-)
AriehnV: hehe .. think rather "horny" .. as in antlers :-)
VardaValar1: ah ok
ArPharazonV: *gasp* Cenarius? [Note: World of Warcraft: image by Alex Horley. Who he is by Gamepedia/WoWpedia including the game version of Cenarius. In Hearthstone.]
VardaValar1: Looks a lot like Cernunnos, doesn't call him that though.
AriehnV: yes a lot of the rituals the Enedwaith people use reminds of old dfruidic rites
AriehnV: with gathering moss, mistletoe and branches
AriehnV: oak branches to be specific
ArPharazonV: Anyway, I should be going. Getting up earlier tomorrow.
VardaValar1: Sleep well and thanks for coming!
ArPharazonV: If you continue, make sure to transcript!
ArPharazonV: Saving and sending my own.
Varda Valar: Sleep well and thanks for coming!
ArPharazon-V: If you continue, make sure to transcript!
ArPharazon-V: Saving and sending my own.
ArPharazon-V: saved
Varda Valar: Thank you
Arien V: oki i am retiring for tonight ^^
Varda Valar: Sleep well
ArPharazon-V: sent
Arien V: happy gaming for you who do :-)
Varda Valar: Supper needa made
Arien V: and sleep wel when you get to it
Varda Valar: *needs even
Arien V: and enjoy food
Varda Valar: Planning on LotRO in a bit!
Varda Valar: Namarie :-)
Arien V: Namarie :-)
Arien V (AriehnV) has left the room.
ArPharazon-V: Namarie Arien!
ArPharazon-V: Allright, *that* she won't read on my transcript.
Varda Valar: oops
Varda Valar: Guess I need to patch it in
ArPharazon-V: Oh well, Namarie to you too!
Varda Valar: Namarie :-)
ArPharazon-V (ArPharazonV) has left the room.
