You have just entered room "valarguildmeetingplace."

karakedi25 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Indis :-)
karakedi25: aiya
ArPharazonV: Just got out of normal Auchindoun after finishing the

VardaValar1: Hi from Sauron, currently playing SWTOR.
VardaValar1: Any news from you folks?

VardaValar1: You had a chance to chat with her?
AriehnV has entered the room.
AriehnV has left the room.

VardaValar1: Gaming:
VardaValar1: World of WarCraft:
VardaValar1: Still trying to connect with Celebrian and Elrond in WoW.
I see them but can't seem to get their attention. Need a bigger
semaphore. :-)
VardaValar1: Games Site: Highmaul opened this week on normal difficulty. See the blog
Warlords of Draenor: Journey into Highmaul
for a schedule of when other difficulties are opening.
VardaValar1: You can also check on the
latest hotfixes.
VardaValar1: From Eonwe:
VardaValar1: In addition, WoW grouping news: Eonwë, Bofur, and Nob
got together to defend a garrison (think it was Bofur's off the top of
my head but I've forgotten) from an invasion. We succeeded, and got
gold rating for the effort.
VardaValar1: /endquote
VardaValar1: Any other general WoW news?
VardaValar1: LotRO:
VardaValar1: The next update is upcoming.
VardaValar1: Battle of Pelargir will include not just a two man but a larger group, think 6?
karakedi25: yes, 6
VardaValar1: Our kinfolk have been very busy on both ends of the
levels, with Beornings and with the higher end gaming such as the new
Pelargir area.
VardaValar1: Thanks. :-)
VardaValar1: You had some more news, Indis?
karakedi25: There will be some improvements and maybe a nerf for the Beornings
VardaValar1: (We've also been doing deeding runs.)
VardaValar1: Nerf stick already! I'd better run in and play mine soon!
karakedi25: Also the aggravating LM bear growls out of combat will disappear
VardaValar1: Huzzah!
karakedi25: I think it's only one skill
karakedi25: most of the changes are positive
VardaValar1: Good to hear
karakedi25: that's it for me
VardaValar1: Thank you. :-)

VardaValar1: The expansion will be
launching December 8th.
Yes, that soon!
karakedi25: like tomorrow
ArPharazonV: Some card nerfs with that patch, too.
VardaValar1: Aye
ArPharazonV: Also, I believe it's the 9th over here.
ArPharazonV: But that still means about 25 hours :-)
VardaValar1: Heroes of the Storm:

VardaValar1: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: If anyone has a topic, feel free to let us know, or you get mine. :-)
VardaValar1: Elven rulers and leaders: who were they and how did they affect history?
karakedi25: Could anyone have affected history more than Feanor?
karakedi25: not a ruler, but certainly a leader
ArPharazonV: So many of them! Fingolfin, Fingon, Turgon, Elrond, Galadriel, Gilgalad...
karakedi25: To say nothing of the original leaders of the kindreds
ArPharazonV: Can't believe I forgot Thingol, too.
ArPharazonV: Who do we start with? :-)
ArPharazonV: Feanor! Creator of the Silmarils, leader of the exodus.
Responsible for the oath, the first kinslaying, the stealing and
burning of the ships.
VardaValar1: That's a lot.
ArPharazonV: Responsible for the Palantiri as well, which helped shape the War of the Ring.
VardaValar1: Before hiim there were the three elves from Cuiviénen
VardaValar1: Ingwe, Elwe, and Finwe. Pardon my problem with making umlauts over the final e
ArPharazonV: If I'm not gonna throw accents on Palantiri, you're fine :-)
karakedi25: and Olwe
VardaValar1: Thanks Phar. :-)
karakedi25: Sadly no accents from me either. Far to cumbersome on an American English keyboard.
VardaValar1: Agreeing with Phar that Feanor had a lot of effect on the
history and his actions continued to affect it for a verrrry long time.
ArPharazonV: Could even blame the feud between Elves and Dwarves on one of his silmarils :-)
VardaValar1: The three elves from Cuiviénen also had a huge
influence, one so far-reaching that it became almost invisible next to
a Feanor.
VardaValar1: They had to decide whether or not to take their people to
Valinor. They went first and looked, then brought their factions as far
as they could go.
VardaValar1: They caused the various major types of elves.
karakedi25: That would include the off-shoots like the Laiquendi
ArPharazonV: And a lot of them there were, indeed, as some groups lagged behind or didn't want to continue.
VardaValar1: Agreed, Indis
VardaValar1: The journey itself caused various splits.
VardaValar1: Ingwe took his small group of Vanyar at speed, so they made it all the way to Valinor.
VardaValar1: Makes one wonder where the Middle-earth blonds came from. :-)
ArPharazonV: Like Legolas?
karakedi25: Not all the other kindreds were limited to dark or brown hair.
karakedi25: I'm sure there were elves with all hair colors in most kins, possibly even the Vanyar
VardaValar1: Aye, there had to be other blonds than the Vanyar.
VardaValar1: Although Noldor were mostly dark-haired, they also had red-haired elves.
ArPharazonV: Well, some of the Noldor might have taken Vanyar wives, thus getting the blond gene within the exiled.
ArPharazonV: Or... no need to be sexist, some could've taken vanyar husbands.
VardaValar1: The marrying could have started before the journey, too.
VardaValar1: heh
karakedi25: I'd think so
VardaValar1: It's never really said what the silvan hair color was, but
we could expect brown as mix between the various groups early on.
VardaValar1: Sindar are unclear, but we know Elwe's hair turned silver
after meeting Melian, that Celeborn's hair was silver, that Thranduil's
and Amroth's were blond.
VardaValar1: We know one of Haldir's people was blond, but not whether he was Silvan or Sindar.
karakedi25: I believe it's mentioned that many Sindar had grey hair.
karakedi25: I forget where.
VardaValar1: You've been reading in HoMe recently, so it could have been from a lot of places. That would be handy to know.
ArPharazonV: Must be all the stress of moving so many people and losing groups along the way.
VardaValar1: heh
VardaValar1: The hair color could be a way to help tell which group the elves belonged to, but not all that good for it.
VardaValar1: Anyway, the three elves made the three main group movements, with all their offshoots.
VardaValar1: The Noldor group was second largest, the Teleri group was
the very largest and therefore hardest to move without breaking off
into splinters.
VardaValar1: Each of the splinters usually had a leader, at least as a spokesman.
VardaValar1: Each of these had a profound effect on elves for generations afterwards.
karakedi25: We know almost nothing of the effects of the split on the
elves who remained in Valinor, but of course the Noldor rebellion had a
profound and lasting effect on the elves of Middle-earth
VardaValar1: And that gets us back to Phar's succinct and well-done Feanor presentataion. :-)
VardaValar1: Ingwe repented of going with Feanor after the Kinslaying
at Alqualonde, and many returned to Valinor with him, changing all
their fates.
karakedi25: One wonders what it might have been like for Galadriel to return to Valinor.
ArPharazonV: Wasn't that Finarfin who did that?
karakedi25: yes, Finarfin turned back
VardaValar1: Thank you
VardaValar1: Ingwe was dead
karakedi25: Finwe?
ArPharazonV: Finwe.
VardaValar1: Finwe
VardaValar1: Good thing you folks are here
VardaValar1: heh
karakedi25: easy error to make
VardaValar1: two in a row, double good you two are here. :-)
karakedi25: very gracious of you :-)
ArPharazonV: Ingwe was the top Vanyar, right?
karakedi25: leader of the Vanyar, yes
karakedi25: as for Sindar hair color, this looks like a good
description from a generally reliable site:
http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Elven_Characteristics
VardaValar1: Our old friend of Tolkien Gateway. I miss his coming to these chats. :-)
VardaValar1: But he's a very busy guy.
ArPharazonV: Luthien had dark hair. That could have been introduced through her mother, then.
karakedi25: Some Sindar did have dark hair. We have no idea of what the
genetic patterns would have been. Was dark hair dominant?
VardaValar1: Arwen had dark hair too.
karakedi25: Arwen was technically a Nolde, no?
VardaValar1: Also, knowing if they mean brown or black when they say dark can be confusing.
VardaValar1: Luthien and Arwen had black hair
VardaValar1: Arwen had a mixed ancestry
karakedi25: that's why I say technically--didn't Elrond count as a Noldo if anything?
VardaValar1: Maybe dark or black hair was indeed dominant then.
karakedi25: and Celebrian also had Noldor 'blood'
VardaValar1: Elrond was mixed too, but counted himself as an elf and a Noldo
VardaValar1: Celebrian's father Celeborn was Sindarin
karakedi25: but Galadriel was not
karakedi25: a blonde Nolde :-)
VardaValar1: Celebrian's mother, Galadriel was mixed, her hair having both silver and gold from the mix, very rare.
karakedi25: with Vanya mixed in
VardaValar1: Aye
VardaValar1: Between Arwen and Aragorn, they mixed pretty much everyone except Feanorians into one blood line.
karakedi25: I think these examples suggest that 'pure blood' among elves was not all that expectable
VardaValar1: The Silmarillion shows the history of their two blood lines as well as the silmaril story.
karakedi25: And if any of the Feanorians had survived for any period of time, some of them might have mixed in too
ArPharazonV: Certainly not beyond... say.. the first few... well, actually, not after the first generation.
VardaValar1: The Feanorians were pretty much wiped out in bloodlines.
karakedi25: I guess Celebrimbor was the last of that line
ArPharazonV: I think so, yes.
karakedi25: at least that we know of
VardaValar1: karma from the author? :-)
karakedi25: ?
ArPharazonV: Then again, Maglor never died, did he?
VardaValar1: Maglor remained singing by the sea, aye
karakedi25: I don't think he had time or energy to mate
ArPharazonV: He might still have been the last.
karakedi25: true
VardaValar1: Still, the Feanorians all had a strong effect on history.
VardaValar1: So they would count as part of our topic.
karakedi25: the topic was leaders as well as rulers, so they definitely count
VardaValar1: They were held by the oath laid on them by their father to
go after the silmarils, no matter what, leading them into all manner of
problems.
ArPharazonV: They ruled their own, at least after the exodus.
ArPharazonV: Well, most of them.
VardaValar1: Then we had the leadership going over the Helcaraxe after Feanor left them behind.
karakedi25: and Celebrimbor led the Gwaith-i-Mirdain
VardaValar1: Galadriel was no weakling. She made it across the Helcaraxe.
karakedi25: She was amazing.
VardaValar1: Aye
ArPharazonV: Young, ambitious and competent.
VardaValar1: True\
karakedi25: if she'd been born male, no one would have thought her desire for power a bad thing
ArPharazonV: Almost odd that we didn't hear anything from her in the First Age ;-)
VardaValar1: She wanted a kingdom.
VardaValar1: The desire for power was a problem for a lot of people in the story.
karakedi25: she spent a lot of time in Menegroth with Melian during the First Age.
VardaValar1: Aye, learned a lot from a Maia, adding to her abilities
and the association helped teach her leadership from the top.
ArPharazonV: That certainly helped after the first age.
VardaValar1: Interesting that she took up with a Sinda, but he was a
war leader, had to have been quite attractive to her, maybe exotic, and
related to the Teleri.
VardaValar1: Wonder if his relationship with those back at the Kinslaying might have been part of the interest?
karakedi25: Some versions say that they met before she left Valinor, that he was a Teler from the shore people
VardaValar1: Lots of versions, aye.
karakedi25: his origins are a bit obscure
VardaValar1: He seems to have become a Sinda of Doriath in later versions.
VardaValar1: With the silver hair, he was possibly from the line of Thingol
karakedi25: One way or another, he was Telerin
ArPharazonV: I wonder how the Sindar regarded *her* involvement with the kinslaying, if she was there at the fight.
VardaValar1: That would give him blue blood
VardaValar1: When Thingol found out, he was furious. No more speaking Quenya in Middle-earth after that.
ArPharazonV: And yes, I believe Celeborn was Thingol's nephew in some versions. Son of the third/youngest brother.
karakedi25: The line of Finarfin was considered kin by Thingol because of Finarfin's Telerin wife.
ArPharazonV: At least I think there was a third brother mentioned...
VardaValar1: Elmo
VardaValar1: As bad as I've been with names today, might need a fact check on that. :-)
karakedi25: Elmo sounds right
ArPharazonV: That's him. Not to be confused with the muppet.
VardaValar1: heh
ArPharazonV: Celeborn was his son, then.
VardaValar1: We mentioned Thingol and Melian, who became the main leaders in Middle-earth for the elves
VardaValar1: even affecting the great Noldor princes that came back to Middle-earth.
karakedi25: and of course ancestral to the lines of Elrond and Elros
VardaValar1: After Thingol's death, Melian returned to Valinor and the barrier went down, another major effect.
VardaValar1: Right
VardaValar1: and therefore from Elros to Aragorn, and Elrond to Arwen.
karakedi25: right
ArPharazonV: Just one fragment of their ancestry, though :-)
VardaValar1: I like to think that Melian and Thingol were reunited in Valinor, after he came back from his time in Mandos.
ArPharazonV: The most divine fragment!
karakedi25: That's a nice thought
ArPharazonV: Hmm, no reason why they shouldn't.
ArPharazonV: But they wouldn't meet Luthien again.
karakedi25: Thingol had a fair amount to think over in Mandos, though
VardaValar1: Sad about Luthien, but after Arda is made aright, they should all meet again
karakedi25: he was something of a hot-head
VardaValar1: Melian would have the patience to wait. :-)
karakedi25: of course
karakedi25: and Galadriel might have gotten back together with Melian to compare notes
VardaValar1: True! That would be an interesting fan fic.
ArPharazonV: You could write a lot of fanfictions between Elven
characters meeting after death, since they did all end up on the same
continent sooner or later.
ArPharazonV: Must've been crowded after a while.
VardaValar1: It would continue growing as needed I think, and was large to start
karakedi25: elves didn't reproduce rapidly
VardaValar1: Move over Aule! Move your elbow Orome!
ArPharazonV: Growing? In what direction?
VardaValar1: It was still in flat space so it could grow in all directions
ArPharazonV: True, it was removed from the world... they could add a bit of land here and there.
ArPharazonV: Place a mountain here, hollow it out for some living space...
VardaValar1: Grow from the edges as needed, or even go downwards as well as your mountains
VardaValar1: By the time of the War of the Rings, which elves would be considered leaders that made history?
karakedi25: the Valar probably had a great deal of control over Valinor beyond what we consider natural laws
VardaValar1: Just keep sub-creating because that's what they do.
karakedi25: Obviously Elrond, Galadriel
ArPharazonV: Thranduil?
ArPharazonV: For the Battle of Five Armies, at least.
karakedi25: Would you include those who preceded the WotR?
karakedi25: Gil-galad of course
VardaValar1: Thranduil was also important at the time of the War of the Rings.
VardaValar1: He sent Legolas to the Council of Elrond, although not for that reason.
VardaValar1: He kept up the area north of Dol Guldur against the orcs and other foul things.
VardaValar1: He joined up with Lorien to attack Dol Guldur and bring it down.
karakedi25: The portrayal in the Hobbit probably doesn't do him much justice.
VardaValar1: His was the only elf kingdom from the past to continue
VardaValar1: I liked Thranduil in the Hobbit. The dwarves were not the least cooperative and did invade his kingdom.
ArPharazonV: The book or the movies, Indis? ;-)
karakedi25: yes
VardaValar1: :-)
karakedi25: the book is very much from the dwarven point of view
ArPharazonV: Silly dwarves, crashing his parties.
ArPharazonV: Stealing his wine barrels.
VardaValar1: Cirdan was busy too, less visibly.
VardaValar1: and Legolas started a new colony of elves.
karakedi25: *nod* in a quiet supportive way
VardaValar1: Does that complete our War of the Rings group?
ArPharazonV: Cirdan must've been quite busy building all those ships for elves who would never bring them back.
ArPharazonV: Seems a very ungrateful job! And must've cost quite a bit of lumber too.
VardaValar1: That is interesting. Did he have to make them all? Did any ever get returned by the Teleri to help him?
karakedi25: I'm sure he had his sources of lumber
ArPharazonV: So that's where the entwives went...
karakedi25: ewwwww
VardaValar1: Plenty of forest nearby and his people would keep replanting
VardaValar1: hey now :-)
karakedi25: Phar, that's horrible
VardaValar1: Ok, about hammer time now.
ArPharazonV: Fine, fine, it was probably normal trees ;-)
VardaValar1: Ones that don't scoot away from the axe, lot of trouble.
ArPharazonV: Indeed.
karakedi25: Elves wouldn't chop down sentient trees
VardaValar1: *taps a hammer experimentally and hears the bedrock ring gently. Suitable*
VardaValar1: *twannnnnnnng*
top
VardaValar1: After-meeting:
ArPharazonV: Elves don't seem likely to chop down any trees, to be honest, though they must have for their ships.
VardaValar1: Free chat!
ArPharazonV: At least they didn't over-cut.
VardaValar1: As Aule says, they will have need of lumber.
karakedi25: Indis is a bit tired, so she will say namarie and thanks for a fun conversation
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
VardaValar1: They would have been excelllent foresters, replanters.
VardaValar1: Rest well. :-)
karakedi25: thank you
ArPharazonV: Re-foresting does still take nutrients though.
ArPharazonV: A sapling can't grow from nothing.
VardaValar1: Plenty of fish fertilizer?
ArPharazonV: That's possible.
VardaValar1: Right by the shore. Lots of fishing.
karakedi25: g'night
karakedi25 has left the room.
VardaValar1: That was a good chat. :-)
ArPharazonV: *nods*
VardaValar1: Phar, you had a batch of news for gaming?
ArPharazonV: Oh sure, I'll throw in some stuff :-)
ArPharazonV: For Hearthstone,
I tried the free arena run that came with the patch, but I don't like
arena much. Lost a few times, and was happy with the standard pack of
cards as minimum reward.
ArPharazonV: Getting a bit too much dust from the old collection so
when the release date was announced for the expansion, I started saving
a bit of gold. Should have enough for about 3 packs when it comes out.
ArPharazonV: All about level 30 and a half now, keeping it roughly equal.
ArPharazonV: For WoW,
I'm 98 and a half now. My raidgroup started raiding already, since they
had the people for it, but I can't join them yet and have to read the
channels to see what's going on :-)
VardaValar1: You're a good reader. :-)
ArPharazonV: I'm hoping to get to 100 before next thursday though!
ArPharazonV: And sure, but it's a bit distracting from the questing ;-)
ArPharazonV: Garrison doing well too! 19 followers now, and about half
of them level 100. None at epic quality though, so been a bit unlucky
there. But I can mend that by sending them on a lot more missions.
ArPharazonV: There is a chance that your follower will be of a better
equality than its default when you recruit it, up to epic. But for
those who aren't epic, after reaching level 100 they can upgrade their
quality with more experience, though they need a lot of it.
ArPharazonV: I have not recruited any epics yet, which just means they'll need a lot more time to get there. But I'm patient.
ArPharazonV: And there are.. 5 that start epic by default, I think, but that's end-game stuf.
ArPharazonV: *stuff
ArPharazonV: Allright. Let's see. Flashgaming.
ArPharazonV: Right. For this week you'll get 3 flashgames I've played, of various genres.
ArPharazonV: http://www.kongregate.com/games/macondos/command-control
is basically a tower defense game with between-level upgrades. It's not
very big though, with only 8 levels and that many upgrades possible.
Setting is based on recent wars though, Afghanistan and Iraq as I
recall, so if you don't like that sort of setting, don't bother :-)
ArPharazonV: http://www.kongregate.com/games/GregAnims/skullface Skullface
is a platformer, relatively simple. Just make your way through levels,
and you can try to ace the time for gold medals. Starts simple, gets
more mechanics and machines as you progress.
ArPharazonV: Quite fun, though some of the moves don't respond very
well; in particular the wall-jumping is not all that reliable.
ArPharazonV: And finally a music/rhythm game called A Dance of Fire and
Ice, at http://www.kongregate.com/games/fizzd/a-dance-of-fire-and-ice
ArPharazonV: name presumably inspired by the "A Song of Ice and Fire"
book-series, but is not based on/related to it. Just a matter of timing
your rhythm and uncovering tunes and songs as you go along :-)
ArPharazonV: I'm pretty bad at it myself though, can't even get through
the first world; the lack of save-spots within levels is rather
annoying. But if you're decent at it, it can be good fun!
AriehnV: sorry for my silence but quite tired but i was reading along btw
ArPharazonV: Annnnd that's it for me.
VardaValar1: Thanks Phar :-)
VardaValar1: Anything you wanted to mention, Arien? Before you go to bed?
AriehnV: nah not really thanks :-) just that my rota is not getting better .. sigh but thats it
AriehnV: got my Pala in Pharis guild to lvl 95 or 96 i think now :-)
VardaValar1: Nice :-)
ArPharazonV: 96 is good! Gives the herb garden I think?
AriehnV: yep
AriehnV: and got Kaz the shrieker as companion in garri
ArPharazonV: That's horde, right?
VardaValar1: You.. want a companion that shrieks?
AriehnV: hmm er r maybe not shure .. i got soulbinder Tulaani i think ?
AriehnV: well have a good night .. namarie
AriehnV has left the room.
VardaValar1: Rest well :-)
ArPharazonV: Got Tulaani myself today, for finishing the Auchindoun questline.
VardaValar1: Nifty :-)
ArPharazonV: Funny though, since I did the Auchindoun *instance* after that...
ArPharazonV: where she was a leading npc.
ArPharazonV: So first I get her as a follower, and I send her on a
mission somewhere, and suddenly she's there as an npc when I do the
instance a few minutes later :-)
ArPharazonV: saving and sending transcript
