ArPharazonV: Aiya all! And congratulations Grimbeorn
AriehnV: say back hi to all aand happy birthday to Grimbeorn :-)
VardaValar1: Arien's has major news. Go ahead when you're ready.
AriehnV: all right ... Its not so nice news but .. it could have been a lot worse
AriehnV: On Wednesday my fiance had a bit of an accident while he was scouting a place whether it was worth taking pictures off
AriehnV: he isnt sure what really happened .. he thinks he fainted and fell down the ravine into the river at the botton
ArPharazonV: ...Good thing for the river, then.
AriehnV: I reported him missing at 22.30 or thereabouts but he was found only thursday night at around 9 pm
mcioutpost has entered the room.
AriehnV: i know in the meantime it happened about 7.45 or so which meanse he was out there for over 24 hours
AriehnV: hey there mc lout ... forgot your guildname again ^^
VardaValar1: Aiya Nar
ArPharazonV: Aiya Nar!
AriehnV: ah Nar yes Aiya Nar :-)
VardaValar1: That's a long time, even if he had been in good shape.
AriehnV: but the good news is .. he is alive , he is in hospital in
good hands and he will recover even if it will take a long time
AriehnV: bit silly he is on the mainland now in hospital .. over a
hundred miles from here but i will go and visit on my days off and else
stay in touch via phone
ArPharazonV: I hope no permanent damage was done?
AriehnV: hopefully not ... i ll have a word with a doctor tomorrow if i get the chance and might know more about that
GwaihirValar: Well I'm glad to hear he's on the road to recovery at least... and that he was found.
AriehnV: but all i know i about are fractured ribs, he had a collapsed lung, a fractured collarbone and suspected liver damage
AriehnV: but the lung thing is the major issue
AriehnV: errr suspected kidney sorry
ArPharazonV: Kidney could be bad. I think liver regenerates better? But
yeah, what Gwaihir said. It could've been worse. And I wish you both
good luck in his recovery!
AriehnV: anyways they have to sort the lung first before they can do anything else
Iryenth: Indeed, good luck and hopefully the damage is not as bad as it could be.
AriehnV: indeed i hope so as well , we just have to wait and see now
AriehnV: but there is no reason why they shouldnt be able to mend it
VardaValar1: He's on the upswing now. : )
AriehnV: yussh and the community was very helpful and the public
mcioutpost has left the room.
mcioutpost has left the room.
VardaValar1: Whoever that person was who found him, bless him. : )
AriehnV: it went all round facebook and the newspapers so ... a lot support for him there
AriehnV: and on the stv news page of course with picture and all
mcioutpost has left the room.
mcioutpost has left the room.
mcioutpost has left the room.
mcioutpost has left the room.
mcioutpost has left the room.
AriehnV: thats it from me so far :-) i ll update you asap at next meeting
VardaValar1: Thank you, Arien : )
mcioutpost has left the room.
VardaValar1: Arien and I are trying to friend each other on Facebook.
mcioutpost has left the room.
ArPharazonV: Ah, finally submitted to the temptation?
VardaValar1: Thank you for letting us know what happened, Arien. Bruce
has been a friend to the guild a long time, helping with computer
problems and such.
VardaValar1: I've been on Facebook quite a while, actually. : )
mcioutpost has left the room.
VardaValar1: Any of you here that would like a friend request from me, let me know in a side window. : )
mcioutpost has left the room.
GwaihirValar: no facebook for me lol
VardaValar1: I used to post it on the Membership page, but was told that was a bad idea. : )
VardaValar1: okie dokie : )
VardaValar1: Any other membership news?
ArPharazonV: No facebook for me either. I won't deny that there are
facebook pages I check regularly (like PJ's) but I've no reason to make
an account just yet, that outweighs the constant bother by people who
think they know me ;-)
ArPharazonV: Well, I suppose I could mention that I'm going on holiday
for 2 days starting tomorrow, joining my parents for a few days who are
camping somewhere for 2 weeks.
ArPharazonV: But 2 days isn't very spectacular, generally :-)
VardaValar1: Sounds like fun!
VardaValar1: Enjoy your camp-out. :-)
ArPharazonV: Thanks :-)
VardaValar1: Nar is having problems staying connected to AIM. We're still trying.
top
VardaValar1: Web:
VardaValar1: Eonwe and I are still working together to keep the Games
Site updated. Mostly you'll see it on his News page this past week.
VardaValar1: We still need Hobbit-related articles. One on the
Arkenstone would be great. If someone's working on one, maybe you could
let me know so we don't duplicate efforts.

VardaValar1: Gaming:
VardaValar1: StarCraft 2's third anniversay was July 27. Here's the page for the celebration:
VardaValar1: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/10486644/a-third-birthday-celebration-for-starcraft-ii-7-22-2013#best
VardaValar1: Any other non-WoW, non-LotRO news?
VardaValar1: Bilbo plays a lot of zombie games like Left4Dead2.
GwaihirValar: Final Fantasy XIV's
Open Beta should be happening fairly soon. The game launches next month
and their third and final closed beta phase has just ended a week or
two ago
ArPharazonV: Bit more flashgaming. Couple of tower defenses mainly. Nothing special.
GwaihirValar: And, despite my earlier misgivings of SquareEnix wasting
money on a sinking ship... after playing in Phase3 of the beta, I think
it has some potential post-relaunch as long as they clean some stuff
up... so if you're looking for a new mmo to try, it's worth the time.
AriehnV: Rift for me
VardaValar1: Hopefully the beta will help them see what to tidy up. Sounds interesting.
GwaihirValar: They have some very very good ideas... as long as they
fix up the UI a bit, the chat interface, and the click-targeting, I
think it will be a relative success.
VardaValar1: Sounds do-able.
AriehnV: I have looked at some US servers but i couldnt find any that
is really suitable from the chats .. there is fun feature though :-)
and very useful if you dont want all the spamming in general chat you
can just turn off the general chats for level 1-29 and 29-50 and then
50-60 .. but as i say you can turn them off
GwaihirValar: One thing to be aware of... they impose a skill-check on solo gaming... and it has to be completed solo.
VardaValar1: Sounds fair.
ArPharazonV: Oh, and My Little Investigations (the pony version of Ace Attorney) is finally showing progress again. Shouldn't be long now until the first case is released!
GwaihirValar: There are about 3-4 completely solo quests that have to
be completed to progress through the story. It's a bit disappointing as
it takes you really OUT of the social experience... but it's a design
decision they've made that I hope doesn't hurt them much
VardaValar1: umm, guess they figure soloists don't want social, rather than just trouble finding it?
GwaihirValar: The problem is EVERYONE has to complete them
GwaihirValar: soloist or otherwise
GwaihirValar: even the dungeons are gated behind the story quests, so
if you haven't completed these you're prettymuch locked out of the game
AriehnV: oh one thing in a bit of a tolkien thing is that we have a
charity bookstall in the coop. One book 1 £ donation .. and
yesterday someone brought loads of fantasy stuff in .. amongst which
were a few History of Middleearth volumes
GwaihirValar: But aside from that, I really like their design philosophy.
AriehnV: I mean Co-op as in The Cooperative which is the shop where i work
VardaValar1: You may have just sent some business their way. : )
GwaihirValar: hehe
AriehnV: any way i picked up HoME 1-3 since i have 4 anyway
VardaValar1: Nice!
VardaValar1: Some quick WoW news sent in by Eonwe:
VardaValar1: A new guide for new players is out for basic movement:
VardaValar1: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/10455963/Welcome_to_World_of_Warcraft%E2%80%94Basic_Movement_and_Co mbat-7_25_2013
VardaValar1: Any other World of WarCraft news?
ArPharazonV: Lei Shen killed tonight!
ArPharazonV: After, according to our addons, 70 attempts on 25-man.
ArPharazonV: Last boss in the (normal difficulty) Throne of Thunder raid instance :-)
ArPharazonV: So miraculously my holiday now coincides with a free tuesday anyway, since we've no bosses left ;-)
ArPharazonV: Allright, that's it for me.
VardaValar1: Thanks Phar
VardaValar1: Nar re-installed AIM on his newer computer but I still
can't invite him. Can someone else give it a shot? Phar first?
ArPharazonV: It says it failed.
AriehnV: which version has he installed?
VardaValar1: I was just asking and suggested next try that he use the Legacy section
VardaValar1: He's about to have to leave for work. We'll try again another time.
VardaValar1: LotRO:
VardaValar1: I think I may have already given this news, but Monday the community forums go down while they deploy the new one.
VardaValar1: It could take four days or more.
VardaValar1: News can still be picked up on Twitter or Facebook, and is on our News page too.
AriehnV: i ve got Aim 7.5.14.8 installed which looks a bit unusal but its working fine
VardaValar1: https://twitter.com/lotro
VardaValar1: https://www.facebook.com/LOTRO
VardaValar1: Nar says:
VardaValar1: Nar-(V): It simply said AIM for Windows
VardaValar1: And for more info on the LotRO deployment:
VardaValar1: http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?518728-LOTRO-Community-Site-Revamp-July-28-Aug-1-2013-ESTIMATED
AriehnV: ok he might want to google for "older versions of aim"
GwaihirValar: I use 6.9.17.2 and never had problems with it...
VardaValar1: Nar-(V): But I'm running 64 bit Win 7
VardaValar1: ok, he's reinstalled on the other pc
VardaValar1: He no longer shows the group option and may need to fix some setting. We've seen this before.
VardaValar1: Folks, I'm going to have to leave. But Arien will be running a trivia game for you in Tolkien.
VardaValar1: Also, there is an rp post by me on our forum story, which you may have seen.
VardaValar1: Anyone feel free to post. Just need to keep track. ^^
top
VardaValar1: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: Arien, you have the con... er, gavel. : )
AriehnV: all rite folks before i do .. are you up for a round at all?
AriehnV: and thanks Varda for the hamm .. er gavel
ArPharazonV: Sure.
VardaValar1: ^^
VardaValar1: Nar is trying to set up his Group Chat, unblock
AriehnV: ok then we do it as usual and start in alphabetical order
ArPharazonV: Which books?
AriehnV: LotrO and The Hobbit
GwaihirValar: I'm only half here personally... got about 4 other things happening at once
AriehnV: no problem ^^#
AriehnV: want to take part tho or start maybe ?
AriehnV: seeing you are here now
VardaValar1: Yay for scroll : )
GwaihirValar: I'll be here for a bit still, but I dunno if I'll be able to answer many with my attention divided like this ;-)
VardaValar1: If you happen to be able to, feel free. If not, then not. : )
AriehnV: all right Gwaihir want to set us off then?
AriehnV: oh well then i will
AriehnV: ... in LotrO The fellowship
has a nice prelude by a setup of some of the guys who come along later
.. that is even before we know they go all to Mordor . when frodo left
hobbiton
AriehnV: Who was involved and what actually did happen?
ArPharazonV: I... am not sure I know what you're talking about.
AriehnV: When Frodo reached Crickhollow
AriehnV: something was unmasked ..
AriehnV: what by who?
VardaValar1: Conspiracy!
ArPharazonV: Oh, you mean the conspiracy of Sam, Merry, Pippin and Fatty who had been spying on Frodo?
AriehnV: exactly that :-D
AriehnV: Next one please :-)
ArPharazonV: Hmm, tough to think of something that I haven't done before...
VardaValar1: sorry to have to leave. Tried to help Nar, and when he has time after work he'll try agian.
ArPharazonV: Namarie Varda!
ArPharazonV: More roleplaying today?
VardaValar1: Flip through a book, can give you surprise thoughts.
VardaValar1: Aye, most Sundays. I skip out of the game for an hour for the meeting.
VardaValar1: When I get back they'll jokingly tell me to Save the party!
VardaValar1: Namarie, looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
ArPharazonV: have fun!
VardaValar1: (book flipping is great stuff)
AriehnV: have fun varda
ArPharazonV: Allright, I'll.. keep it simple.
ArPharazonV: What was mentioned as Bilbo not having, when he ran to join the dwarves at the start of his quest?
AriehnV: Hankerchief and coat
ArPharazonV: I remember just the hanky, but sure :-)
AriehnV: i think the coat anyway ... since he had to borrow from a dwarf
AriehnV: i forgot who it was actually ... i think might have been Balin i think
ArPharazonV: I think so, yes, who was standing lookout as usual :-)
AriehnV: hehe
AriehnV: okay one more round between us and then we call it since the others iseem to be busy otherwise :-)
ArPharazonV: Sure :-)
AriehnV: In LotrO Gandalf describes Balin's attempt to retake Moria as what where?
ArPharazonV: I don't play LotrO, so I assume the second O is supposed to be missing.
AriehnV: Lord of the Rings i mean
AriehnV: in LotR
ArPharazonV: Hmm... I vaguely recall something, but it's hard...
GwaihirValar: Doesn't Gandalf talk about Balin's attempt to retake Moria in a few different places...?
ArPharazonV: something about brave but foolish?
GwaihirValar: I distinctly remember them talking about it before Moria,
but also while within... but I can't remember the words from each
AriehnV: "valiant but foolish" to be exact :-)
AriehnV: but can you remember where and why?
AriehnV: just as bonus
ArPharazonV: Considering I can hear it in Ian's voice, it must also be
in the movie. But if it's the same as in the movie, it would be in his
tomb.
ArPharazonV: Balin's that is.
ArPharazonV: Audio sticks so much better than the written word, apparently. Maybe I should get an audio book.
AriehnV: mmh he said it at Balin's tomb in the chamber of Mazarbul
ArPharazonV: Where the book was found, yes?
AriehnV: yes
AriehnV: your turn :-)
karakedi25 has entered the room.
karakedi25: Aiya
AriehnV: or Gwaihir if he has an idea for a question
ArPharazonV: Or Indis :-)
ArPharazonV: Aiya!
AriehnV: and Aiya Indis :-)
karakedi25: no question but a warning for lotro-ites
ArPharazonV: VardaValar1: I think I may have already given this news,
but Monday the community forums go down while they deploy the new
one.VardaValar1: It could take four days or more.
karakedi25: new forum means all the old stuff is going away. I'm copying some of the ones I had bookmarked into word docs
ArPharazonV: That warning? :-)
ArPharazonV: Ah
GwaihirValar: Ya it's like back when Blizz launched their new forum interface
karakedi25: Some of them are quite good, even if some are a bit dated
ArPharazonV: Yep. Lost some good lore-threads etc that way.
AriehnV: thanks Indis for that
AriehnV: great job and like that they wont be lost
AriehnV: seeing the time and the fact I am quite tired I think we call it a night :-)
ArPharazonV: Allright.
top
AriehnV: at least here officially i declare .... AFTERMEETING .. sets .. Ham ... er Gavel nearly aflame with an explosian
ArPharazonV: I could come up with a new question if you want.
AriehnV: yep sure go on :-)
ArPharazonV: How many races were actually involved in the battle of five armies?
karakedi25: both sides or only the good guys?
ArPharazonV: Both sides.
GwaihirValar: Also are you counting goblins and orcs as separate?
ArPharazonV: Hmm, not really. They all seemed to be goblins there, or interchangeable anyway.
ArPharazonV: Besides, what is a goblin if not a type of orc?
GwaihirValar: The Hobbit was written as though they were different, yet later it was clarified to not be the case
GwaihirValar: so I wanted to make sure ;-)
ArPharazonV: As far as I know, the word "orc" never fell in The Hobbit.
GwaihirValar: Hm... would've sworn it was... I'll have to check that...
ArPharazonV: Which suggests to me that it was just the preferred word,
since a goblin leader was mentioned as the son of one who was said to
be an orc leader.
AriehnV: aye "orc" and "goblin" seem to have been synonymious
AriehnV: Tolkien uses "goblin" however most of the times if not at all times in "The Hobbit"
GwaihirValar: I'm too out of polish to remember clearly... but I do
remember reading that there was once question about whether they were
the same
GwaihirValar: Ah this covers it fairly well http://tolkien.cro.net/orcs/goblins.html
GwaihirValar: even in the the original writings of some of the
Histories, such as the "Tale of Tinuviel' as originally written, they
were differentiated. But by the time he actually wrote the Lord of the
Rings he changed his mind about them being different.
GwaihirValar: Which is where the confusion comes from ;-)
AriehnV: Nice one gwaihir
AriehnV: thanks for the link
GwaihirValar: and as such the Hobbit was written as though them
referring to slightly different, although related things, but the
decision was later changed
GwaihirValar: the wikipedia page has some info as well :-)
GwaihirValar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orc_(Middle-earth)#Orcs.2C_Goblins.2C_and_Uruks
ArPharazonV: when the narrator mentions the large goblins ("great Orcs of the mountains")
GwaihirValar: "Goblins, Hobgoblins, and Orcs" was the reference that really confuses it
ArPharazonV: Especially since we never see hobgoblins mentioned ever again.
GwaihirValar: ya
AriehnV: right folks i think i really have to call it now but feel free
to continue either the discussion or the trivia and i am sure Phara is
ging to save it
AriehnV: :-)
GwaihirValar: night
AriehnV: Namarie all
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
AriehnV has left the room.
karakedi25: namarie all--back to my thread-saving project :-)
karakedi25 has left the room.
VardaValar1: and we have an Encyc of our own with this handy article:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/o/orcs/orctypesandgear.htm
ArPharazonV: Also useful :-)
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: Thank you to Indis for working on that thread-saving project, an excellent plan.
VardaValar1: Just popping by here during a break, good to see folks doing things!
ArPharazonV: Allright, saving and sending transcript.
