Before-meeting
You have just entered room "valarguildmeetingplace."
Eonwe Valar has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: Heya.
ArPharazonV: Aiya!
Eonwe Valar: I guess we'll give a couple more minutes to see if anyone else comes in.
Eonwe Valar: OK, I guess we'll go ahead and begin.
ArPharazonV: Just finishing up my post.
ArPharazonV: It's a short one, but it'll do.
Eonwe Valar: Cool :}

Eonwe Valar: Elen Sila Lumenn Omentielvo!
Eonwe Valar: Membership:
ArPharazonV: Posted.
ArPharazonV: As always, I fret for a few weeks what kind of post I should make, and then I sit down for half an hour and make one from scratch without any preparation.
Eonwe Valar: Hehehe.
Eonwe Valar: Varda and Fangorn are out of town for the funeral of their aunt (Fangorn's mother's sister). The should be heading back today, but not sure about the time.
ArPharazonV: Ah, my condolences.
Eonwe Valar: *The should = They should
ArPharazonV: And if she drops by later, we'll find out :-)
Eonwe Valar: Aye :}
Eonwe Valar: Do you have any Membership news, Phar?
ArPharazonV: Hmmm, no.
Eonwe Valar: OK, guess that means we can move on :}

Eonwe Valar: Gaming:
World of WarCraft (WoW)
Lord of the Rings Online (LotRO)
StarCraft 2 (SC2)
Diablo 3 (D3)

Eonwe Valar: WoW:
Eonwe Valar: Feast of Winter Veil starts tomorrow.
ArPharazonV: Hmm, does it actually start tomorrow, or tonight?
ArPharazonV: If it's between midnight and 3, I can get another Greench kill in.
Eonwe Valar: Not sure about the actual time off the top of my head.
Eonwe Valar: I don't have WoW up to check the calendar, sorry.
ArPharazonV: Eh, I'll find out later.
Eonwe Valar: Patch 5.4.2 came out this week, improving the Raid Browser to get us through until the Group Finder emerges in Warlords of Draenor.
ArPharazonV: And the littlest pet shop.
Eonwe Valar: 2 of my four 90s got groups for Celestials pretty quickly using it, and Auros finally got into an Ordos group using it, so I gotta say it's made a good first impression.
Eonwe Valar: Aye, they also put that store button inside the game.
ArPharazonV: Yep, tried Ordos on wednesday, went quite smoothly.
Eonwe Valar: Can't say I'm happy about it having such prominent real estate in the UI.
ArPharazonV: I can't even open it. I enabled parental controls once to get rid of realid, and now it's blocked, probably until I open the controls.
ArPharazonV: But that saves me the eternal temptation :-)
Eonwe Valar: :}
Eonwe Valar: I completed my 4-piece sete bonus for T16 this week on Auros, so now he has the free Divine Storm proc with 50% extra damage, and of course Ordos gives me a Warforged helm to try and break my 4-piece :}
ArPharazonV: grats!
Eonwe Valar: Thanks :}
ArPharazonV: what piece are you missing then?
Eonwe Valar: Glvoes.
Eonwe Valar: *Gloves
ArPharazonV: Just get warforged gloves then ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Of course the Celestials continue to give Auros gold, hehe.
ArPharazonV: Or set gloves, so you can use the warforged helm.
ArPharazonV: so many ways!
Eonwe Valar: But they gave Ranelus, my Worgen Rogue, the T16N pants :}
ArPharazonV: Ah, that's nice.
Eonwe Valar: Aye, if I can get into a raid that makes it to Nazgrim, or get the Celestials not to be so stingy, I can get a pair of T16 gloves :}
karakedi25 has entered the room.
karakedi25: aiya
Eonwe Valar: Heya Indis.
Eonwe Valar: Last of all, I managed to make Stormherald, Reborn this week, so now I've got the ability to make all the Reborn weapons, just not the inclination since it takes 30 days to do it, hehehe.
ArPharazonV: Aiya
ArPharazonV: Ah, that's the blacksmithing thing, right?
Eonwe Valar: Aye from 5.2
Eonwe Valar: I finished getting all the recipes from Balanced Trillium a while ago.
AriehnV has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: Wasn't that mechanic already present in burning crusade or so?
AriehnV: aiye all
Eonwe Valar: Well, the Reborn weapons are better versions of what Hammersmiths, Axesmiths, and Swordsmiths would individually get to learn to make back in BC, aye.
ArPharazonV: Aiya Arien!
Eonwe Valar: I still have the plans for the original Thunder/Deep Thunder/ Stormherald line since I was a Hammersmith back then when Hammersmithing still existed, but it wasn't possible to have all the weapon plans on one character until now.
Eonwe Valar: Heya Arien.
Eonwe Valar: Any other WoW news before we move to LotRO?
gaming

Eonwe Valar: LotRO:
AriehnV: not really thanks
karakedi25: Want me to say a few words?
Eonwe Valar: If you have some LotRO news, sure :}
karakedi25: Update 12.1 is due out tomorrow. Lots of bug fixes, large and small, and some tweaks to the class traits.
karakedi25: There's a huge preliminary list of fixes; the final list will be available during the downtime tomorrow morning (EST).
karakedi25: I'm hearing relatively little griping about the class changes; people are probably getting used to them.
karakedi25: And I'm personally enjoying the scenery and stories in western Rohan. I have one character at 95, one more half a level away, and a third at 91.
karakedi25: Any questions or comments?
karakedi25: That's about all I have to say about LotRO atm.
Eonwe Valar: Thanks Indis :}
gaming

Eonwe Valar: Starcraft 2:
Eonwe Valar: Looks like when Patch 2.1 comes out, we'll be able to play the original Starcraft's music in SC2 games.
Eonwe Valar: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/11941668/patch-21-preview-classic-starcr aft-soundtrack-in-starcraft-ii-12-10-2013 for the info.
ArPharazonV: I thought that was for the map editor, as in, customized maps for them. But I could be wrong.
Eonwe Valar: The way the info at that link reads, it's for while you're actually playing the game.
Eonwe Valar: And here's a link for what's currently being tesetd on the PTR: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/11738826/public-test-realm-operational-12 -3-2013
Eonwe Valar: Looks like they're adding a couple of things to Clans and Groups too.
Eonwe Valar: An Events tab, and a "Club Icon"
Eonwe Valar: And this part sounds both interesting and easy to exploit:
Eonwe Valar: "Additionally, Clans can create and upload a custom image to replace the decals that appear on the terrain surrounding clan members’ town hall structures in-game."
Eonwe Valar: Insert quote around that last sentence there.
ArPharazonV: That sounds... exploitable.
Eonwe Valar: Aye. I'm curious how they're going to police that, assuming they're going to.
Eonwe Valar: But hey, it's in PTR right now, so we'll see how tenable it is over the course of testing I guess.
Eonwe Valar: If it makes it to live, it might be something fun to look into.
ArPharazonV: What easily recognized symbol would the Valarguild have?
ArPharazonV: The Ring?
Eonwe Valar: In WoW we used something that looked akin to the Flame Imperishible.
Eonwe Valar: For some other emblems done for us they've involved a tree.
ArPharazonV: This sounds more customizable though. Although the new system might work the same way with pre-given symbols and shapes.
ArPharazonV: Which would eliminate the need for policing.
Eonwe Valar: I.E. the one you see when you go to the Glittering Caves of Aglarond portion of the Tolkien Site.
Eonwe Valar: True.
Eonwe Valar: Although I read the word "upload" in there, so...
ArPharazonV: True.
Eonwe Valar: "create and upload" actually, implies pre-defined images wouldn't be necessary
ArPharazonV: Well, "create" could be "choose things from lists and put them all together however you like".
ArPharazonV: Like the Diablo 3 banner.
ArPharazonV: Upload, though... yes, that's less ambiguous.
Eonwe Valar: We'll see how it ends up going.
gaming

Eonwe Valar: D3:
Eonwe Valar: Two pieces of news here.
Eonwe Valar: First, the Closed Beta for Reaper of Souls is going.
Eonwe Valar: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/11954350/reaper-of-souls%E2%84%A2-clo sed-beta-now-available-12-12-2013
Eonwe Valar: Second, Patch 2.0.1 is up on the PTR.
Eonwe Valar: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/11954349/patch-201-ptr-now-available-12-1 2-2013
Eonwe Valar: Patch notes here for those interested: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/11883960/201-ptr-and-closed-beta-patch-n otes-12-12-2013
gaming

Eonwe Valar: Any other gaming news before we move on to Tolkien?
ArPharazonV: Bit of flashgaming, and trying a bit of Creeper World 3, but I don't think I'll go for the full version. Mostly just various non-interesting games.
Eonwe Valar: OK, on to Tolkien then :}

Eonwe Valar: Tolkien:
Eonwe Valar: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug came out this week. If you've seen it, no spoilers for those who might still go to see it :}
Eonwe Valar: If anyone has a Tolkien topic, we can discuss it. If not, we can do a few rounds of trivia.
AriehnV: i will maybe go and see it either tomorrow or on Tuesday .. Bruce is dragged with me of course hehe
Eonwe Valar: hehe
Eonwe Valar: OK, no Tolkien topic it seems. Everyone here say Valacirca.
ArPharazonV: Valacirca.
karakedi25: Valacirca
Eonwe Valar: OK, let's do 3 rounds of trivia. As I recall everyone here has been through the Silmarillion?
ArPharazonV: I have.
ArPharazonV: Though perhaps not recently.
karakedi25: some time ago as well
AriehnV: same here
AriehnV: but have read it
Eonwe Valar: OK, so we should be on about even footing, hehehe.
ArPharazonV: Then again, if we'd all read it today, trivia wouldn't be as fun :P
Eonwe Valar: :}
Eonwe Valar: If anyone objects to 3 rounds of Sil trivia, now's your chance :}
LizMarr has entered the room.
karakedi25: am in lotro, so responses may be a bit delayed if fighting
Eonwe Valar: Heya Ioreth :}
ArPharazonV: Aiya Ioreth!
Eonwe Valar: We're in the Tolkien part of the meeting, was about to do 3 rounds of trivia from the Silmarillion. Are you familiar with the Silmarillion?
LizMarr: not really, read it in college so I just listen (didn't really read all of it then)
LizMarr: I found it a hard concept to justify with the others
Eonwe Valar: Seems all of us haven't read the Sil in a bit, so you might not be that bad off :}
Eonwe Valar: If you would like to participate, we can do LotR instead.
LizMarr: 37 years is a bigger bit... lol
Eonwe Valar: hehehe
LizMarr: I want to learn, I like sil
Eonwe Valar: ok :}
karakedi25: big fight coming up...will be slow
Eonwe Valar: 3 rounds of Sil trivia. Arien, do you have one you want to start us with?
Eonwe Valar: OK, Phar, got one you want to start us off with? :}
ArPharazonV: Hmm, sure.
karakedi25: fight over
ArPharazonV: Getting details straight..
.
ArPharazonV: Who were the seven sons of Feanor and what was each his role/position in the Siege of Angband?
Eonwe Valar: Hmm
Eonwe Valar: An easy part and a hard part, hehehe. Is that supposed to make it medium difficulty? :}
ArPharazonV: Heh, I'm right now going through the Silmarillion to make sure all brothers were mentioned.
Eonwe Valar: Celegorm, Curufin, Maedhros, Maglor, Aegnor,...
karakedi25: can't do that one without looking it up, so I won't go for it, but will surely learn something from the answer
Eonwe Valar: Amrod and Amras.
ArPharazonV: Allright, just in case my question is unanswerable, I'll just ask you to name the locations of 2.
LizMarr: that's seven
ArPharazonV: Aegnor is wrong, as far as I can tell.
ArPharazonV: Unless he has a different name. Pooh.
ArPharazonV: No, Aegnor's wrong, that's a son of Finarfin.
Eonwe Valar: OK, fair enough.
Eonwe Valar: I believe it was..... I want to say Celegorm.... that was positioned near the Ered Luin... Possibly Curufin instead or as well.
Eonwe Valar: Caranthir for the seventh son.
ArPharazonV: Ah, found the paragraph listing all their locations. Maedhros, Maglor, Celegorm, Curufin and the as yet unnamed one are mentioned with their "wards" at least.
ArPharazonV: Yes, Caranthir :-)
Eonwe Valar: Maedhros I believe positioned himself between his brother and those following Fingolfin.
Eonwe Valar: *brothers
ArPharazonV: Ah, Amrod and Amras are mentioned also.
ArPharazonV: Though I'm thinking this might be a bit too difficult.
ArPharazonV: And no, it seems Maedhros was not the most westerly of the brothers :-)
AriehnV: was curufinwe one as well or is that an old name for Feanor?
AriehnV: I ve read that name somewhere as well
ArPharazonV: Curufinwe is another name for Feanor, Curufin is one of the sons.
Eonwe Valar: I remember something about him picking the most dangerous spot for himself, so that anything from Morgoth's gates he would take the brunt of.
ArPharazonV: Maedhros certainly had an obvious, sticking-out position ;-)
AriehnV: so Maglor, Maedhros, Amrod, Amras, Celegorm, Curufin
AriehnV: one is missing
ArPharazonV: and Caranthir, Arien.
ArPharazonV: As Eonwe mentioned.
AriehnV: ah great :-)
ArPharazonV: Hah, there's even a map in my Silmarillion listing them at their locations. I wish I'd found this earlier.
ArPharazonV: For hints, Celegorm and Curufin were together; Amrod and Amras were together; the others had seperate wards. Out of the 5 resulting parties, 3 were along the northern borders, the other 2 parties southwards.
Eonwe Valar: I think he put Amrod and Amras westermost?
Eonwe Valar: Furthest away from the danger.
ArPharazonV: Hmm, yes, furthest from the danger, but... not exactly west.
Eonwe Valar: Celegorm and Curufin then were near the Ered Luin.
ArPharazonV: Nope.
ArPharazonV: That was someone else :-)
Eonwe Valar: If memory serves, it was one of those two whose people first of the Noldor came into contact with the Dwarves of the Ered Luin.
ArPharazonV: Nay, that was the other one :-)
Eonwe Valar: Or I need to reread my research, heh.
Eonwe Valar: OK, fair enough.
Eonwe Valar: I need to reread my own research :}
Eonwe Valar: At this rate, we may not need 3 rounds of Sil trivia :}
karakedi25: afk for a few minutes
ArPharazonV: Why? You're getting pretty close ;-)
Eonwe Valar: So Caranthir near the Ered Luin, Amrod and Amras southward.
ArPharazonV: Yes.
ArPharazonV: That leaves 4 more brothers on the north.
ArPharazonV: Remember, Maedhros is not the most westward.
ArPharazonV: I could just give the answers if you want.
Eonwe Valar: Aside from Maedhros positioning himself to take the brunt of any assault, I'm not sure of any others. I would surmise Celegorm and Curufin eastward based on what I , which would leave Maglremember of the story, so that leaves Maglor westmost.
Eonwe Valar: *based on what I remember of the story, which leaves Maglor westmost.
ArPharazonV: Maedhros indeed positioned himself the most forward on the Himring.
ArPharazonV: Maglor is not westmost :-)
Eonwe Valar: I'm not sure then of the order, because at this point I'd just be plugging in names until I got it right :}
ArPharazonV: Celegorm and Curufin are westwards of Maedhros, guarding the Pass of Aglon between Dorthonion and the Himring, as well as the Himlad beneath it.
ArPharazonV: For your credit, they were indeed in a mountainous region :-)
ArPharazonV: Maglor is to the east of Himring, guarding the area between the arms of the river Gelion.
ArPharazonV: But for your persistence and great share of good answers, I grant you the question answered ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Hehe, thanks :}
ArPharazonV: Arien's turn now?
Eonwe Valar: I figured we can just go through the order and Arien gets to ask the last question.
ArPharazonV: Then your turn.
Eonwe Valar: Aye
Eonwe Valar: I'll ask one of my favorite Sil questions.

Eonwe Valar: What two characters influential to the history of Arda crossed paths briefly at the Pools of Ivrin?
ArPharazonV: Those would be the cousins Turin and Tuor, I believe?
Eonwe Valar: Correct :}
ArPharazonV: Turin on his way back to Dor Lomin, and Tuor... on his way to Gondolin?
Eonwe Valar: Off the top of my head I forget where Turin was going, buy aye for Tuor.
Eonwe Valar: Indis' turn, if she's here :}

karakedi25: Ok, the kinslaying that blighted the history of the Noldor happened more than once. What were the events during the First Age?
ArPharazonV: They were three.
ArPharazonV: One in Aman, 2 in Beleriand.
ArPharazonV: Aqualondë, Doriath and... Mouths of Sirion?
karakedi25: That sounds right to me.
karakedi25: Who were the best-known victims?
ArPharazonV: First one was Noldor vs Teleri to steal their boats, second one was Noldor vs Sindar/Dior to claim the Silmaril, third one was Noldor vs Elwing at the Mouths to claim the Silmaril.
ArPharazonV: And by Noldor, feel free to substitute Sons of Feanor.
karakedi25: certainly for the last two, though more than Feanor and his sons were involved in the first one
ArPharazonV: True.
Eonwe Valar: Fëanor was the instigator, aye. Fingolfin came up during the fight, not know why there was fighting and immediately joined on the side of his brother.
Eonwe Valar: *not knowing
AriehnV: wasnt he killed there?
Eonwe Valar: Fëanor? No.
AriehnV: no Fingolfin
Eonwe Valar: Not him either.
Eonwe Valar: Fingolfin went on to fight Morgoth in a duel.
ArPharazonV: Nutter.
AriehnV: hmm .. i think i have to listen to Nightfall now ^^
Eonwe Valar: :}
karakedi25: Feanor was killed in battle in Beleriand.
Eonwe Valar: Is it Arien's turn now, or did we miss a portion of the answer for Indis' question?
Eonwe Valar: Did Phar get it, Indis? :}
karakedi25: yes
Eonwe Valar: ok :}

AriehnV: okay .. lets see .. the five battles big ones of Beleriand there were five .. can you name them with either Sindarin names or their translation?>
LizMarr has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: Dagor-nuin-Giliath (Battle Under Stars) would be one
Eonwe Valar: Dagor Aglareb for the Third Battle.
Eonwe Valar: Nirnaeth Arnoediad.
ArPharazonV: Dagor Bragollach was the third, I thought.
ArPharazonV: Or something similar.
ArPharazonV: Nirnaeth Arnoediad was Unnumbered Tears, right?
Eonwe Valar: Aye, Nirnaeth Arnoediad was Unnumbered Tears
Eonwe Valar: Dagor Bragollach (Battle of Sudden Flame) was the 5th. After the Dagor Aglareb (Glorious Battle) Morgoth realized he needed to come up with something new to fight the Noldor.
Eonwe Valar: Er, Dagor Bragollach was teh 4th rather.
Eonwe Valar: *the
ArPharazonV: I don't remember the Dagor Aglareb. That wasn't the one with Feanor, was it?
Eonwe Valar: That was the first big one after the Noldor arrived.
karakedi25: no that was the one under the stars (where Feanor died)
Eonwe Valar: *Dagor Aglareb
AriehnV: thats all five i think since the kinslaying of aqualonde counds as the fist battle of belleriand
ArPharazonV: When Fingolfin arrived with the sun, and drove the servants of Morgoth back to base?
Eonwe Valar: The first one was actually between Thingol's army, outfitted by Dwarves, and the orcs.
AriehnV: Dagor Gilliath .. the battle under the stars is the second, and you named them all
ArPharazonV: Hmm, no, the First Battle of Beleriand was fought before the arrival of the Feanor, by Thingol and the elves of Ossiriand, yes.
AriehnV: ah right
Eonwe Valar: Thingol's force + Dwarves had the victory, but Cirdan's forces were driven back to the sea.
Eonwe Valar: I'm going to go ahead and bang the gavel here, since we've completed a round, as I need to step out for a while, but I encourage interested parties to continue with the Sil trivia :}
Eonwe Valar: I'll leave my AIM up so I'll still get the chat.
Eonwe Valar: *bangs the gavel*
top

Eonwe Valar: Aftermeeting:
Eonwe Valar: Feel free to continue the trivia, or even just discussion on the Sil :}
AriehnV: i loveit .. Time stands still at the Iron Hill
AriehnV: Fingolfin against Morgoth ..
ArPharazonV: On the cover of one of my History of Middle-Earth books, I think. Fingolfin vs Morgoth.
AriehnV: aye
karakedi25: afkagain
karakedi25: namarie
karakedi25 has left the room.
AriehnV: Namarie
Eonwe Valar has left the room.
AriehnV: Namarie :-)
AriehnV has left the room.
