AriehnV: *bows to Thingol*
Eonwe Valar: Heya.
AriehnV: Aiya Eonwe
VardaValar1: Aiya Eonwe :-)
Iryenth has entered the room.
Iryenth: Aiya all
VardaValar1: Thingol, your email on our site is wrong, so we haven't been able to contact you. Haven't seen you since 2007.
AriehnV: Aiya Glilraen
VardaValar1: Gilraen, aiya!
thingol_v@ymail.com: lol, wow
ArPharazonV: Aiya folks I haven't aiya'd yet.
VardaValar1: Would you like to keep your association with the Valar Guild Tolkien fan club and gamers group? You'd be welcome.
ArPharazonV: Which is now a verb.
thingol_v@ymail.com: sure
VardaValar1: hehe - language changes are us!
VardaValar1: Huzzah! Glad to see you around again. : )
VardaValar1: Still play Runescape?
thingol_v@ymail.com: not really
VardaValar1: Pardon, I've been told you were in a meeting more recently than that, within the last half year.
thingol_v@ymail.com: too many changes for the worse in that game
VardaValar1: ouch
thingol_v@ymail.com: what do most members play these days?
VardaValar1: Lord of the Rings Online
VardaValar1: We're on Landroval server.
VardaValar1: They have free to play if you want to check it out. : )
thingol_v@ymail.com: i have an ancient computer right now but i just bought a few parts for a new one im building
VardaValar1: Some WoW gaming too, on Lothar server as Alliance and on Uldaman server as Horde.
top
VardaValar1: Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
VardaValar1: Membership news:
VardaValar1: Since we're already doing membership news, might as well make it official. ;-)
VardaValar1: Feb 19, thanks Eonwe for doing the digging. : )
VardaValar1: We also have a tiny group on Star Wars: The Old Republic
on the server Rubat Crystal, but it seems to not have enough interest
to take off well.
VardaValar1: LotRO is doing very well. I just left there and 13 people were on.
VardaValar1: In other membership news, Hama-(V) has brought both of his sons into LotRO as Members of Honor recruits. Saeros-(MoH) is reading the books, currently on RotK and will probably hit Full Member soon.
AriehnV: I am trying to book the two mid-August weeks as holidays so i
might try to attend this event you mentioned last week in Loughboro
VardaValar1: ohh, wonderful!
AriehnV: from the Tolkien society
VardaValar1: Return of the Ring
VardaValar1: The other son is still choosing a name, but his character's name is Chinga if you see him and wonder who that is.
VardaValar1: Good luck, Arien! May your camera behave itself. ;-)
VardaValar1: Be fantastic if you get to run into Luthien.
VardaValar1: Any other membership news?
ArPharazonV: ..better set it up in advance then, or you might see each other and have no idea :-)
AriehnV: lhehe aye i ll contact her if it works out fine :-)
AriehnV: probably i might even attend her Sindarin workshop
ArPharazonV: That's true. If nothing else, you'll be able to recognize her because of the workshop.
VardaValar1: Aye, and her art exhibit.
VardaValar1: Eowyn and her husband are back from their long-awaited Caribbean cruise.
VardaValar1: Tulkas is also back from the Caribbean, and glad to have
better internet for the moment, but his being around is going to be
iffy, since he got home too early and won't have a house for 2 months.
VardaValar1: Joys of being a sailor, heh.
VardaValar1: He is thinking maybe a road trip with his wife, but that
means internet only sometimes from hotels. He'll be around at odd times
though. :-)
thingol_v@ymail.com has left the room.
VardaValar1: Web:
thingol_v@ymail.com has entered the room.
VardaValar1: We could use quite a few more articles for the Tolkien
Site. I was digging through and noticing we have more stubs (quick
descriptions) than I realized. Feel free to write on your favorite
topics or on something to do with your character to help your rp.
VardaValar1: Welcome back, Thingol. :-)

VardaValar1: Gaming:
VardaValar1: Any non-WoW, non-LotRO gaming this past week?
VardaValar1: StarCraft/BroodWar for Fangorn and myself. He came home last night. : )
VardaValar1: Star Wars: The Old Republic and quite a few others for Sauron.
VardaValar1: And a lot of beta gaming by various members in Diablo 3 and in Guild Wars 2 that I can't tell about officially.
VardaValar1: Diablo 3 has been reported as addictive, caution. : )
VardaValar1: Please remember to make our friend channel in any beta or other game to find each other.
ArPharazonV: Few flashgames here. Also a gameplay demo coming out for one of those MLP games next saturday, I'll try it and maybe report on it the day after :-)
VardaValar1: Thanks
VardaValar1: That Guild Wars 2 beta ends tonight around midnight. Miriel gave us the url:
VardaValar1: http://www.guildwars2.com/en/
VardaValar1: Do any of you know how to make a private channel from the old Guild Wars? It could be the same way.
VardaValar1: If you thnk of it later, holler. I'll put a link down to it.
ArPharazonV: If I recall, you couldn't. Communication was quite lacking in it.
VardaValar1: ugh, thanks for that.
ArPharazonV: You could whisper, or talk in guildchat, or in alliance chat with other guilds in the alliance
ArPharazonV: but I don't think there were any custom channels possible
ArPharazonV: I was hoping they'd improve on that in GW2.
VardaValar1: Let's hope!
thingol_v@ymail.com: question, does diablo 3 have guild/private channels? it was my understanding that it doesnt.
VardaValar1: It used to use Battlenet channels, but that's gone.
AriehnV: i have actually logged into SW:ToR this week and picked up my Tauntaun pet from the Legacy patch :-) very cute
Eonwe Valar: I would imagine D3 would use the same Bnet as SC2, which does have channels at this point.
VardaValar1: Very good, hehe. I
VardaValar1: Thanks, Eonwe. : )
ArPharazonV: Any idea if it allows for cross-region chat?
Eonwe Valar: That I can't answer off the top of my head.
Eonwe Valar: But I tend to doubt it.
VardaValar1: Might be something on their site:
VardaValar1: http://us.battle.net/en/
VardaValar1: On to World of WarCraft news, aka WoW:
VardaValar1: Eonwe, you had something to mention?
Eonwe Valar: Aye. Children's Week has begun.
VardaValar1: Orphan buddy to squire around! yay!
Eonwe Valar: There are four pets available for from the Stormwind
Orphange, and 4 from the Shattrath Orphanage, so if you didn't get the
newer one for each yet, you've got work to do :}
ArPharazonV: I think the newest ones were implemented last year, no new
ones today. Though if you have them all you can choose to be reward
with pet biscuits in Stormwind, that make small pets grow until
dismissed.
ArPharazonV: Personally I was one year behind for Shattrath, so I'm glad there's nothing new :-)
ArPharazonV: *no new ones this year, I mean
VardaValar1: In other membership news, Finwe-(V) is back in the marines, very busy.
Eonwe Valar: Afraid I have no WoW reports for Friday or last Sunday.
Looks like most of us are busy with real life, or taking a break.
Eonwe Valar: Yeah, I'm sure the Marines will keep him busy :}
VardaValar1: Thanks, Eonwe. Fangorn and I hope to pop in after the meeting and bother you in WoW. : )
top
VardaValar1: LotRO:
VardaValar1: That's a very busy place, something going on all the time.
We just report the scheduled stuff or the News would be very cluttered.
VardaValar1: The afternoon group runs daily and the rest of us pop in and out of questing, instances, and raids.
VardaValar1: Monday we ran Limlight Gorge pre-req quests for folks needing them.
VardaValar1: Then we had a few people left and ran Fangorn's Edge.
VardaValar1: Then a couple of us did the Isengard dailies.
VardaValar1: I mislaid my Wednesday notes, but think we were mostly doing questing in duos and singles.
VardaValar1: Galdor and Pippin have been working very hard running with
various groups to learn how to lead the Tower of Orthanc series of
quests, currently the top in the game.
VardaValar1: Some others have also been running them, trying to learn.
It's best not to put all the learning on just one or two and expect to
follow blindly. Please feel free to pug or run with friends to learn
it. Later we'll be doing it as a regularly scheduled run together.
VardaValar1: Currently our big Saturday run is usually Draigoch, and folks are getting geared from that before really hitting the Tower of Orthanc.
VardaValar1: We have been running it well enough to think of it as
almost a farming run, but it was not that smooth yesterday, heh. We
tried three times and didn't quite make it.
VardaValar1: Having a group of regulars makes a lot of difference. : )
VardaValar1: We were trying different alts, some folks who haven't been
playing in quite a while, and some filler-in folks that we know, so
that contributed.
VardaValar1: Any other gaming news from anyone?
VardaValar1: Indis says hi from her telephone. It won't let her enter the room, just individual chat.
VardaValar1: Any further comments, suggestions, words of wisdom?
top
VardaValar1: Tolkien chat!
VardaValar1: Elu Thingol, there's a character we haven't talked about for a while. : )
VardaValar1: How did he affect the Silmarillion story line?
ArPharazonV: Well, his role in the retrieval of the silmaril was vital;
if he hadn't made that condition to Beren, there might have been no
jewel to guide his great-grandson-in-law to Valinor.
VardaValar1: That's true, and the most important part of the plot in a nutshell.
VardaValar1: He also was the reason for the large part of the Sindarin
population's remaining in Middle-earth when they were all set to go to
Valinor.
thingol_v@ymail.com: hehe
VardaValar1: He also introduced a strain of Maia bloodline that showed up in such notables as Elrond and Aragorn.
ArPharazonV: accomodated, more than introduced, I'd say; it wasn't he,
but the mother of his child that introduced the Maia blood
VardaValar1: Language trick there.
thingol_v@ymail.com: his words to beren were quite specific
Eonwe Valar: It wouldn't have happened without him...
ArPharazonV: That is true of course :-)
thingol_v@ymail.com: basically, come back to me with a simiril in your
hand, he came back, but his simiril and hand were elsewhere, but still
met thingols terms
VardaValar1: Aye : )
Eonwe Valar: Not the ideal way of meeting them, aye, hehe.
ArPharazonV: He came back, and the silmaril was in his hand.
ArPharazonV: So technically it was allright, though it didn't do Thingol any good.
thingol_v@ymail.com: i always pictured thingol doing a *facepalm* when he saw berens arm
VardaValar1: Thingol was also the reason that Sindarin rather than Quenya was the normal Elvish language spoken in Middle-earth.
VardaValar1: hehe Thingol
Eonwe Valar: Hehe, Varda took the words right out of my mouth.
VardaValar1: Still slightly damp.
thingol_v@ymail.com: lol
VardaValar1: The marriage of the Sindarin king Thingol and the Maia
Melian produced the most beautiful of the elves of Middle-earth:
Luthien.
Eonwe Valar: He also offered something of a counterpoint to the Noldor,
and a realm that at least had the *potential* not to fall victim to
their oath, until he messed that up.
VardaValar1: Aye, Eonwe. There was hope for a while.
VardaValar1: With Arwen of beauty comparable to Luthien's, Aragorn was toast.
ArPharazonV: Poor guy never stood a chance...
thingol_v@ymail.com: :-)
VardaValar1: If he's been raised around her as a foster sister, he might have been ok, but no.
VardaValar1: Thingol was a very striking elf too, and capable of attracting a Maia.
thingol_v@ymail.com: well...
VardaValar1: Of course she turned his hair white. Women.
thingol_v@ymail.com: he was sort of enchanted by Melian
VardaValar1: For both of them to be caught in that enchantment,
something very strange had to happen. One of those truly magical
moments.
VardaValar1: That silver hair seems to have been passed down. Celeborn had it too.
VardaValar1: Wasn't Galadriel's a mix of the silver and gold colors, making hers exceptional?
VardaValar1: So Sauron wanted strands of her hair, but it was Gimli that got them.
thingol_v@ymail.com: oh, dont remember that part
Eonwe Valar: It was a UT version of her story. Fëanor wanted the strand.
VardaValar1: Funny how things from so far back would show up.
VardaValar1: Feanor, pardon. /facepalm
VardaValar1: In rp news, research is still ongoing before the Elrong post, but it should not be much longer.
VardaValar1: *Elrond
VardaValar1: I'm going to have to hit the gavel down before making too many more typos.
VardaValar1: *swings gavel*
VardaValar1: *thonk!*
top
VardaValar1: After-meeting!
VardaValar1: Free chat.
ArPharazonV: Used the heavy one this time, eh?
thingol_v@ymail.com: *gavelme*
VardaValar1: It makes a satisfyinng *thonk*
VardaValar1: *no*
VardaValar1: *passes gavel to Eonwe*
thingol_v@ymail.com: *kick* vardavalar1
thingol_v@ymail.com: uh oh, didnt work
VardaValar1: He wants hurt? : )
thingol_v@ymail.com: :-\
VardaValar1: He's playing with our old Battlenet meeting commands. :-)
thingol_v@ymail.com: valarbuddy was fun
thingol_v@ymail.com: well ladies and gents, i need to go. have things i need to take care of
thingol_v@ymail.com: has been fun :-)

AriehnV: my pleasure
ArPharazonV: This song was in the book? Will need to check.
AriehnV: yes i think its in the Fellowship book
AriehnV: Galadriel sings it on the swan ship if i remember right
ArPharazonV: Yes, found it.
ArPharazonV: Before the final farewell.
AriehnV: aye
ArPharazonV: With harp, as in the book. Nice.
VardaValar1: Next to it is Christopher Lee as Treebeard:
VardaValar1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ42cbnjMpM&feature=related
AriehnV: i ve got that on now .. oh what a beautiful bass voice
AriehnV: very appropriate for that
VardaValar1: Thank goodness he doesn't rush it. And he's great with the names.
VardaValar1: He works with the Tolkien Ensemble a fair bit.
AriehnV: thats audible
AriehnV: and a good bit of acting in the voice as well , expressing the feelings
AriehnV: nice
VardaValar1: Aye :-)
AriehnV: well then that was an appropriate ending for a nice evening :-)
ArPharazonV: I spot Tom Bombadil in the related videos.
AriehnV: Namarie all and good luck in whatever undertakings and adventure you still might take on
VardaValar1: Namarie!
AriehnV has left the room.
VardaValar1: The entire animated Hobbit movie is on there, heh

ArPharazonV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRVIVJjuaHE&feature=related and here's old Tom
VardaValar1: Thanks :-)
ArPharazonV: Hah. From the comments "Maybe he's Illuvatar's simple
minded brother. He lost his job and had to move into the world
Illuvatar created. He's been bumming off him since before the Valar
arrived."
VardaValar1: hehehe
VardaValar1: ohh, Goldberry
VardaValar1: Lady dwarves can sing too. ^^:
VardaValar1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=ME5urFBf0kk
ArPharazonV: Is she supposed to have a beard, or do lady dwarves
canonically not have one? I know it was joked on, in the movie at
least..
ArPharazonV: And wow, that is a long song.
Eonwe Valar: It would seem to be a requirement if they're so indistinguishable from the men.
VardaValar1: Lady dwarves are bearded, aye. She's just singing it and is a fan of dwarves.
VardaValar1: She's doing the whole poem. Usually people cut it.
VardaValar1: Namarie all!
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
VardaValar1 has left the room.
karakedi25 has entered the room.
karakedi25: aiya==after-meeting?
