fladrifv has entered the room.
VardaValar1: We did Gath Agarwaen for some of the medium level, and Great Barrows. For high level, we've been doing Sword Halls, Sammath Gul.
ArPharazonV: Aiya
karakedi25:
Instead, they are setting up areas in Eriador for high level questing
(caves and such), and we will be sent around to round up rangers to go
with the Grey Company.
VardaValar1: Aiya Fladrif. :-)
AriehnV: aiya ent :-)
karakedi25: aiya
karakedi25:
yes, we had a highly successful Garth Agarwen run (that's in what would
be the Wastes of Cardolan if they had the license for that name)
VardaValar1: More than one GA run this week.
karakedi25: That's the first 'book' of the new expansion, Volume 3. What will follow that remains to be seen.
Eonwe Valar: Any other gaming go on this week that's not WoW or LotRO?
karakedi25:
Several of us have done the revamped Lone-Lands quests--there's a new
reputation group there--and it seems to be very well done. (= Wastes of
Cardolan)
Eonwe Valar: Ah, we have more, pardon :}
fladrifv: *waves*
karakedi25: np...I'm done
Eonwe Valar: Any other LotRO news?
VardaValar1: In LotRO,
VardaValar1: I'm currently looking for members willing to lead some runs.
VardaValar1: Indis is the only one so far who has volunteered. :-)
VardaValar1: Would you like to mention which ones you'd be willing to run, Indis?
VardaValar1: She
seems afk, but she's mentioned running the Moria radiance instances and
some skirmishes such as Dannenglor, Thangulhad, maybe Bree and Tookland.
karakedi25: The book quests...
VardaValar1: Please correct where I misunderstood.
karakedi25: yes, those too, and Sword Halls and Sammath Gul (end-game instances)
karakedi25: you have it right
VardaValar1: That's a lot. : )
karakedi25: I could also lead the skirmishes in Dol Guldur, as I've done them, and they aren't too hard.
karakedi25: Maybe Warg Pens (though I've only done it once).
AriehnV: i d be quite happy with some lvl 36 instances pfft .. need another 2g :-(
AriehnV: and a bunch more for traing
karakedi25: That would be Garth Agarwen, I'd guess
karakedi25: or thereabouts
AriehnV: aye sure need to finish dol dinen and can then hs back to down there
karakedi25: I could lead the Wayward Companion series, which you'd find quite lucrative in the final quest
AriehnV: :-)
karakedi25: that's in North Downs
karakedi25: (Mirminiual needs it too)
AriehnV: aye indeed
AriehnV: thats where my map is
AriehnV: or got the fp anyway
AriehnV: er stablemaste r ^^
AriehnV: am
off on wednesday ... and friday i think but i need to check the rest of
the week its a bit weird , we have a colleague on holidays
AriehnV: or hang on tuesday i think
AriehnV: maybe i can come on tomorrow night
karakedi25: Tuesdays are bad for me during the day (Eastern time)
AriehnV: i mean monday night which would be ur early evening or late afternoon :-)#
Eonwe Valar: Feel
free to make use of the
forum to arrange stuff too :} Tell all those
guys and gals in LotRO that it's available to them to set up
get-togethers :}
[
note: the forum has an event calendar as well as places for posts.]
AriehnV: :-)
VardaValar1: Good reminder. : )
karakedi25: I wish more people used the forum. I check it at least daily.
AriehnV: people generally seem to be very reluctant or too lazy to use forums
AriehnV: always the same , grin
VardaValar1: It's not as convenient as it might be.
VardaValar1: The in-game calendar for WoW put in LotRO would be nice. : )
Eonwe Valar: I swing by the forum and check it, even if it doesn't always say my name at the bottom for who logged in.
Eonwe Valar: You know, you can check the in-game WoW calendar outside of the game too :}
VardaValar1: I check the most recent 10 posts.
AriehnV: i check usually as well a couple of times
VardaValar1: We can also set up email alerts still, can't we?
Eonwe Valar: For the forum? I "think" so.
Eonwe Valar: I'm quite sure we have the option for particular threads, but not sure about the forum as a whole.
Eonwe Valar: You can send the topic to someone's e-mail too apparently, to get their attention :}
VardaValar1: Sorry, didn't mean the whole forum. : )
VardaValar1: I just hit a Bookmark option.
VardaValar1: on the current RP thread.
Eonwe Valar: Aye, you can bookmark individual threads.
Eonwe Valar: That should let you know when a new post is made.
VardaValar1: Mine was still set for the previous one, oops. : )
Eonwe Valar: So
again, you could use a thread to organize, then e-mail it to those who
would possibly be interested, and bookmarking would let you know if any
of them responded to the thread :}
VardaValar1: Aye!
Eonwe Valar: I hope that helps :}
Eonwe Valar: Was there any more LotRO stuff, or shall we carry on?
VardaValar1: Done, except for the gaming. : )
Eonwe Valar: Hehe, ok.
Eonwe Valar: Anyone play anything besides WoW and LotRO this week?
ArPharazonV: I played some more
Gruntz
ArPharazonV: but it's going slowly :-)
Eonwe Valar: Anyone/thing else?
AriehnV: *shakes head* but Fladrif had something
AriehnV: i thought i saw a branch shake
Eonwe Valar: Then go ahead Fladrif :} Feel free to mention if you have something so that I can call on you at the appropriate time :}
VardaValar1: Whispers to the chair can really help with calling everyone, and reminders are good if the chair loses track.
ArPharazonV: just gave him a nudge in IM
AriehnV: so did i lol
fladrifv: so did they
AriehnV: *chuckles*
fladrifv: *wakes up*
VardaValar1: *waters, fertilizes*
fladrifv: I have played some
chess still in the tournaments
fladrifv: and been away a lot on buisiiness travel so that was my report :-)
VardaValar1: Have you made it into
Second Life this week? You were building on your own land earlier.
fladrifv: its going slowely but sure
fladrifv: we hope to get some renters soon
fladrifv: feel free to pass by Varda
VardaValar1: Be sure to send me a landmark! : )
fladrifv: I will
VardaValar1: Thanks : )
fladrifv: and anyone else who is interested
VardaValar1: Maybe Arth?
Eonwe Valar: Anything else? :}
fladrifv: *becomes treeish again*
VardaValar1:
StarCraft/BroodWar in my family group.
VardaValar1:
Mass Effect 2
VardaValar1: We have some members in LotRO in
Star Trek Online, which went live Feb. 2
VardaValar1: Faramir is one.
Eonwe Valar: My brother's playing that as well.
VardaValar1: We need to know how to make a Valar channel there, for a shadow guilding. : )
VardaValar1: Be sure to do that in any game you try. It can be a surprise to suddenly meet an old friend.
Eonwe Valar: Or a new one :}
VardaValar1: Aye! : )
top
Eonwe Valar: If we are now done with gaming, then we can move to
Tolkien. Time for you all to send me a Tolkien topic :}
Eonwe Valar: If you don't, you get one of mine :}
Eonwe Valar: For
some odd reason, me saying that never causes a rush on my IMs to give
me a topic. I'm beginning to think you all like my topics :}
AriehnV: hehe
ArPharazonV: Maybe we're just lazy.
AriehnV: running out of oomph to be honest :-(
Eonwe Valar: Tolkien is supposed to be the fun part :} Being lazy on it is like spamming 1 button in a 25-man raid :}
ArPharazonV: Hey. I use at least 3.
VardaValar1: For those of us in LotRO, we could mention where we are standing. : )
karakedi25: I had one in mind the other day, but it's slipped my mind
Eonwe Valar: I think I logged out in Imladris :}
VardaValar1: I'm in the Lone Lands, Esteldin, a major ranger camp.
Eonwe Valar: Auros the CHampion has seen Rivendell more times in the last few years than Auros in the RP :}
karakedi25: That's in the North Downs, isn't it?
VardaValar1: North Downs, that's where Esteldin is, pardon
karakedi25: My current character is in the Lonelands at Ost Guruth, the main settlement in the ruins there
VardaValar1:
More is implied about the rangers' life than is said in the books.
AriehnV: I am there as well :-)
ArPharazonV: such as, Varda?
VardaValar1: We
know there were quite a few rangers, that a goodly number stayed around
the Shire borders guarding the last inhabitatants of the land they
cared for.
VardaValar1: They guarded against things that would terrify the people if they had any idea what was out there.
karakedi25:
though remember at one point someone in the Shire said that they didn't
appreciate what the rangers had done for them until they left for the
war in the south
VardaValar1: We know Gandalf sent at least Aragorn on a mission as a ranger.
karakedi25: after the Scouring
ArPharazonV: I think a good number were lodged around Bree in the countryside as well
VardaValar1: We know they came through the Prancing Pony at Bree.
ArPharazonV: That, in any case.
ArPharazonV: Strider was wellknown there.
VardaValar1: I'm agreeing with Phar. They were probably all around any of the settled areas guarding them.
ArPharazonV: Guarding the remaining hubs of peace in what was left of Arnor
VardaValar1: That
was their purpose, to take care of those left. The Hobbits said things
would be better after the King came again. They were still loyal.
VardaValar1: The King was already there, watching over them. : )
AriehnV: they had several campsites around the area they protected , we know one such place was under Weathertop at the watchtower of ..
AriehnV: :-)
ArPharazonV:
Is there anything known about "headquarters" for the Rangers? meeting
places? Battle for Middle Earth II implies they had a settlement at the
ruins of Fornost, I'm not sure if that's mentioned in any literature
AriehnV: anyway under weathertop they had a camping site with wood stacked
VardaValar1: They had families, they raised children. But was it nomadic? In Bree? In secret camps?
ArPharazonV: is Amon Sul the word you're looking for, Arien?
AriehnV: aye but botched that up that was much later
Eonwe Valar: Well we know there were some refuges for the Rangers outside of Rivendell, as Gilraen had to lived somewhere when she left :}
AriehnV: got bit mixed up lol
AriehnV: but yes on amon sul they had one as well
ArPharazonV: I'm assuming that Rivendell had most contact with the royal line among the Rangers
AriehnV: that s further down Anduin tho#
Eonwe Valar: Aye, since Aragorn was raised there.
ArPharazonV:
the rest of the Rangers, perhaps not so much... they would have their
own settlements elsewhere, unless indeed they were nomadic
VardaValar1: The campsites suggest a lot of traveling, as does their gear.
AriehnV: i d love to think that they had at least some "travelling stations"
AriehnV: sort of log huts where they could rest or get a warm meal
AriehnV: but mainly nomadic for sure
Eonwe Valar: While their major cities were mostly desolate, I imagine smaller towns and homesteads remained.
Eonwe Valar: *THeir being the people of Arnor.
VardaValar1: Major campsites, aye. A place especially for raising the tiniest children.
ArPharazonV:
not much is known about the areas to the North of the Shire, in all the
ruins of Arthedain, they could have some hidden permanent positions
there, like log huts that Arien mentioned
VardaValar1: Or fixing up hidden areas in the ruins.
ArPharazonV: but they would probably not be very known to the outside world, except for the Elves
ArPharazonV: as far as Men, or the Enemy's spies, were concerned, the Rangers probably seemed less in number and fully nomadic
VardaValar1: Elrond was in the habit of fostering and training the descendents of Elros, who would be the line of kings.
ArPharazonV: the heirlooms were also kept in Rivendell weren't they?
VardaValar1: He would surely shelter and aid them if they were injured or otherwise in need.
ArPharazonV: Narsil, or the ring
VardaValar1: Elrond gave the heirlooms to Aragorn, withholding only the Sceptre of Annuminas until he was King.
VardaValar1: Galadriel's gift of the Elessar stone was not one of the heirlooms, so it appears Elrond did indeed have them all, Phar.
VardaValar1: Aragorn's first meeting with Frodo was in Bree, and it seemed like the Prancing Pony was an important stop for rangers.
VardaValar1: Eonwe, you had a quote on that, if it's handy?
Eonwe Valar: I was just flipping through RotK for the info on Arnorian Dunedain, but I can grab the quote again.
VardaValar1: If you had something more, please go ahead with that!
Eonwe Valar: Well, the one I originally had might be of interest too, so I'll go with it first.
Eonwe Valar: This is after good ol' Butterbur finally gave Frodo his letter from Gandalf.
VardaValar1: hehe - finally!
Eonwe Valar:
"Frodo
turned and looked at him thoughtfully, wondering about Gandalf's second
postscript. 'Why didn't you tell me that you were Gandalf's friend at
once?' he asked. 'It would have saved time.'
Eonwe Valar:
'Would
it? Would any of you have believed me until now?' said Strider. ' I
knew nothing of this letter. For all I knew I had to persuade you to
trust me without proofs.
Eonwe Valar:
, if I was to help you. In any case, I did not intend to tell you all about myself at once. I had to study you first, and make sure of you. The Enemy
has set traps for me before now.
Eonwe Valar:
"
Eonwe Valar: That's the important part.
Eonwe Valar: Obviously
Sauron and his minions, despite not knowing Aragorn's identity for
certain, thought it important enough to actively wipe out the Dunedain
of Arnor.
VardaValar1: Traps, something he's run into before, probably specifically for him and also others for those who might know of him.
Eonwe Valar: And Aragorn in particular. Seems quite certain that he was a thorn in Sauron's side even in disguise :}
ArPharazonV: Well Aragorn has seen many years of battle already.
karakedi25: He was a thorn under a number of names, but maybe Sauron put together who he was.
ArPharazonV: He's been to the South quite a bit, and spent some time chasing Gollum too.
VardaValar1: Just knowing the High King was still out there and a potential leader for the Free People must have been worrisome for Sauron.
VardaValar1: Aragorn had wandered very far and been in many battles, king in training. Studied much.
VardaValar1: I'll bet he didn't let his rangers slack off. Training centers for both battle and study.
AriehnV: i
am sure that sauron noticed Aragorn's activity's against him and
wondered whty that particular Vermin showed such an interest him
AriehnV: he was certainly a flee in his hide a very uncomfortable indeed
AriehnV: *insert one
VardaValar1: Elrond hid Aragorn's name even as a child. Then Aragorn used a lot of aliases. Half an index maybe? ;-)
VardaValar1: Off-topic. The Superbowl is coming on.
VardaValar1: I'll bet the rangers had sports too, helping their training.
Eonwe Valar: Archery and fencing are both considered sports today :}
AriehnV: for sure archery and sword play yes :-)
AriehnV: and maybe some ball game?
ArPharazonV: Hmm... dodgeballing Rangers..
ArPharazonV: I smell fanfiction.
AriehnV: lol :-) , they knew maybe a form of chess
AriehnV: wouldnt surprise me
Eonwe Valar: Dodgeball
wouldn't be that bad of an exercise if you think about it: If you can't
dodge the ball, you better be able to catch it.
VardaValar1: There is a fan fiction for ranger games on our site, yes. :-)
[
note: "The Game of Kings" by Branwyn-(T)]
AriehnV: dice would make sense too , easy enough to carry those round :-)
ArPharazonV: think the Rangers would be gamblers?
VardaValar1: Knucklebones for dice
VardaValar1: They gambled their lives almost daily.
AriehnV: aye true
ArPharazonV: Going pretty far here... what about cardgames? ;-)
Eonwe Valar: The question is what would such a ball be made of, such that it flies well but doesn't sting *too* badly when it hits, hehe.
Eonwe Valar: Cards probably wouldn't hold up with wandering to well, seeing as they'd be paper.
AriehnV: materials they had :-) leather stuffed with cloth or grass
VardaValar1: The N. American Indians used what they called a medicine ball.
Eonwe Valar: *too well
ArPharazonV: True, Arien. And yeah, stuffed leather might work, or other animal materials.
VardaValar1: Hobbits had already invented golf. : )
VardaValar1: They could have tournaments in which they might merely count coup. : )
AriehnV: hehe , polo maybe for the best riders , they might have had some cavalry albeit not much
ArPharazonV: What about a pig's bladder for a ball?
AriehnV: might be more a Rohirrim thing
VardaValar1: Horses might have been tougher for them to keep. Aragorn himself always seemed to be on foot.
VardaValar1: unless he picked up a loaner.
AriehnV: he had a horse tho
ArPharazonV: He did have a horse though... or had Arwen given that one to him?
AriehnV: Halbarad seems to have one brought down for him
AriehnV: with the Grey Company
Eonwe Valar: Roheryn.
AriehnV: *nods*
AriehnV: they must have had a place for a few horses i think in case they needed to move fast far
ArPharazonV:
I assume they only used horses for long journeys with some haste. They
might have had a few, but perhaps kept at certain locations (such as
Rivendell perhaps?), and probably handled most if not all business in
Arnor on foot.
VardaValar1: Roheryn came from Arwen in Rivendell. But aye, the Grey Company were riding horses.
VardaValar1: Elladan
and Elrohir were riding with the Grey Company, so Rivendell may have
been where they picked up their horses, or maybe stabled them there at
need.
VardaValar1: So I'm in agreement with Phar. : )
AriehnV: :-)
ArPharazonV:
Rivendell's just one place though, and rather isolated to the East.
They might have had a few more west too, perhaps some hidden stables
near the Fornost ruins or even Lindon
ArPharazonV:
It might be possible, but I suspect the Grey Company would not have
travelled all the way to eastern Rivendell to pick up their horses on
foot before coming south, but instead meeting, with mounts already in
possession, further south?
VardaValar1: The Twins were with them.
Eonwe Valar: No reason they couldn't have contacts in Bree or the areas roundabouts.
VardaValar1: I wonder how messages were sent. Just letters? Use of messenger birds?
ArPharazonV: Yes, so part of the company must have come from Rivendell, in any case, including at least the Twins and Roheryn.
VardaValar1: Runners?
VardaValar1: Arwen had sent her flag with them.
ArPharazonV: runners and messenger birds may both have been a valid option
ArPharazonV: and yes, the banner too
ArPharazonV: but it's also possible that some Rangers had specialized messaging duties and used horses to carry across communication
AriehnV: hmm Rohan had the Red Arrow as a sign for gondor that they were in dire need of military support
ArPharazonV: or maybe 1 or 2 horses specifically for messaging duty at any major encampment?
AriehnV: i wonder whether the Rangers had a smilar system
ArPharazonV: and there were the beacons, Arien
AriehnV: aye true
VardaValar1: A Quick Post. : )
VardaValar1: Beacons would also point out where the rangers were.
VardaValar1: Smoke signals? : )
ArPharazonV: Aye. Probably not beacons.
ArPharazonV: They were an inventive people. For all we know they might've made light signals with small mirrors on hilltops.
VardaValar1: Indians had a sort of Morse code with smoke, by putting a blanket over it to interrupt the stream.
VardaValar1: Shiny metal they used for mirrors, aye. Maybe doubled as shaving mirrors.
AriehnV: hmm signalling mirrors for rangers i lik that idea :-)
Eonwe Valar: It's now 6pm Central, 7pm Valar Time (Eastern). Shall we go to Aftermeeting?
karakedi25: maybe they used trained birds
karakedi25: What about the RP? [
note: RP discussion held during the After-meeting.]
ArPharazonV: Perhaps. But I'm thinking more like falcons and hawks than for example pigeons.
Eonwe Valar: We're missing Menel. Was there something specific you wanted to bring up?
ArPharazonV: just seems more their style
karakedi25: no
AriehnV: agreed Phara
karakedi25: yes, doesn't matter which kind of bird
VardaValar1: We can still see what posts we want to make in the RP. Menel is often unavailable.
karakedi25: but it would be less conspicuous than any other form of signaling
VardaValar1: I need to start supper, but will be back and forth.
AriehnV: oki do i ll be off for tonight i think i am getting to yawnie and Shadow wants her chair ;-)
ArPharazonV: namarie Arien :-)
AriehnV: Namarie all :-)
AriehnV has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: *bangs gavel*
top
Eonwe Valar:
Aftermeeting :}
Eonwe Valar: If
there were something specific, I was going to say we could also mention
it in the discussion thread for the RP, get some more use out of that
Forum thing :}
Eonwe Valar: Not really much I can add to the story at the moment, besides skipping us ahead to somewhere else either in or out of Mirkwood.
Eonwe Valar: I assume Phar's ambush was set to be somewhere still under the eaves of Mirkwood?
ArPharazonV: Hmm yes. But I didn't figure we were done with the current situation until we were all mounted.
Eonwe Valar: It seems we're done with the spiders and not waiting around to see if more orcs are coming.
Eonwe Valar: That's my understanding of the current situation.
ArPharazonV: Well if you want any next posts to assume we're already mounted and well underway, I can start things up
Eonwe Valar: I think it's a safe assumption after the call to mount up.
Eonwe Valar: "Well underway" is fine if we have nothing else to run into for another day at least.
ArPharazonV:
I was thinking of starting this arc with Calaron in the trees, a bit of
description of what he's gathered up, and ending with our horses coming
in from the east
ArPharazonV: So I could start by saying "Some time later..." if you want ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Hmm.
ArPharazonV:
but that's why I really wanted us to be actually on our way before I
started the arc, like this it would seem like part of the journey is
missing
ArPharazonV: of course, plans can change, if you don't want it done this way
Eonwe Valar: A brief description, i.e. "The rest of the day was spent in haste, etc" would be better I think.
Eonwe Valar: We have a two-day trip I think between the Forest river and the edge of Mirkwood if memory serves.
ArPharazonV:
Well. If this ambush can happen on the second day, or even during the
night, it would change matters. We could even have a "camping" scene to
spend the night if we wanted to.
Eonwe Valar: We're
eventually going to come across our first campsite, which would put us
within about a day and a half ride to the edge of Mirkwood.
fladrifv has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: Would you prefer the ambush before or after that point?
ArPharazonV:
Calaron... or whoever's controlling him.. is clever though. I don't
think he would prefer battle by night as he knows our nightvision is
probably better than that of his forces. But I'm not sure that matters
a lot in Mirkwood anyway, looking at The Hobbit.
Eonwe Valar: Orcs shun sunlight typically, so I'd say Elves and Orcs are on par enough as far as night vision.
ArPharazonV:
It doesn't really matter I suppose. Maybe after has its benefits; it
can be a nice wrapup for our journey in Mirkwood, as well as giving us
time for our wounds to heal.
ArPharazonV: before the ambush, that is
Eonwe Valar: True.
ArPharazonV:
Unless you have any other ideas, we could do it like that then; one of
us makes a post about the "The rest of the day was spent in haste"
thing ;-) we arrive at a campsite and/or actually camp there, and
either we have a few relaxed nothing-evil-happening posts (or we could
stay vigilant and talk about growing darkness ahead of us) or we skip
the camp-sequence and head into the next day
ArPharazonV: after that, we could follow it up with the ambush
ArPharazonV: if you want some nice party-interaction posts between all the fighting action, here's your chance
Eonwe Valar: I don't think we've sat around a campfire since Meren joined the fun, hehe.
Eonwe Valar: I wonder if anyone would think it's a good idea to camp at a campsite where we'd been attacked earlier, hehe.
Eonwe Valar: *anyone = any characters in the RP.
ArPharazonV: you want to ride all night then, or set up another campsite further along the road?
ArPharazonV: either's fine with me, and could have some interesting results either way
Eonwe Valar: Hmm, what time of day did we say it was at the Forest River?
Eonwe Valar: I
would say at least a visit to the campsite, but the rain would've
washed away most evidence of anything that's been there since us.
Eonwe Valar: Hmm, we've spent alot of posts on the crossing.
ArPharazonV: about 4 pages, yes
ArPharazonV:
I was not aware that you had a target number in mind :-) posting speed
seems to have picked up anyway, so we might be able to afford a longer
chapter
Eonwe Valar: Not really a target number, no. Just surprised we've spent so many posts crossing the river :}
Eonwe Valar: Ok,
so based on the first post in the chapter, we spent most of the morning
riding, slowed by the rain. It's about late morning/early afternoon
when we come to the river.
ArPharazonV: Still a long way to go. What time of day did we arrive at Rivendell on our first journey?
Eonwe Valar: We haven't been to Rivendell yet.
ArPharazonV: sorry. I meant Thranduil's halls.
Eonwe Valar: We spent most of the night riding after the attack.
ArPharazonV: It seems we reached the river in the morning, shortly after dawn.
ArPharazonV: In fact: "The first rays of morning lightened the far eastern sky as the group came upon the river."
Eonwe Valar: "The first rays of morning lightened the far eastern sky as the group came upon the river."
Eonwe Valar: Heh, beat me to it.
Eonwe Valar: I think we agreed we came upon Thranduil's Halls about early/mid- afternoon.
Eonwe Valar: So
I'd say from the campsite where we were attacked to the Halls was about
half a day's swift ride. Considering the rain and the pony, we probably
won't cover that distance as fast.
ArPharazonV: If we spent about the same time going back, it'd be mid-afternoon when we crossed the river?
ArPharazonV: in this part, I mean
Eonwe Valar: hmm.
ArPharazonV:
I mean, on the first trip we crossed the river at dawn, and reached the
Halls early/mid-afternoon. I'm going to check our time of departure
from the Halls westward now, but I doubt we'd make the river in the
morning, especially with pony and rain.
ArPharazonV:
It's after dawn. A quickglance shows at least one reference to the
sunrise as we wake up and get ready to move out from the Halls.
ArPharazonV: This would really put us at the river... mid-afternoon, early at the very earliest
Eonwe Valar: Hmm, early/mid afternoon sounds about right.
ArPharazonV: allright, now, we rode for most of the night, quite hastily... and we're riding hastily for the other way too, it seems :-)
Eonwe Valar: "Hastily" is going to be slightly different heading west than it was heading east.
Eonwe Valar: Again, rain and pony :}
ArPharazonV: That is true.
ArPharazonV: So... if anything... we will find ourselves in the dark *before* reaching our campsite?
ArPharazonV: exactly how much night were we talking about when we rode most of the night?
Eonwe Valar: Coming to Thrnaduil's Halls or leaving?
ArPharazonV: coming to, from campsite to river
ArPharazonV: This is winter, isn't it? That means the nights are longer than the days.
ArPharazonV:
If we rode most of the night east, and now ride from the afternoon
forward west, we will not reach our old campsite by nightfall.
Eonwe Valar: Well, late fall.
Eonwe Valar: No, we probably won't.
Eonwe Valar: Finding a relatively dry spot to camp in will be enough of a trick, assuming you MIrkwood Elves don't already have one :}
VardaValar1: Briefly back. Not winter yet, but autumn.
VardaValar1: Autumn is ending when the Fellowship sets out.
ArPharazonV:
Hmm. Late autumn then. It is already late October when the Fellowship
reaches Rivendell, it was a month later when they set out. Which means
our expedition takes place somewhere in November?
VardaValar1: Some protected places could be rigged as campsites since it's a common route.
Eonwe Valar: Aye.
Eonwe Valar: One sec, I'll scan the discussion thread for the info, since I know it's there :}
VardaValar1: Camouflaged
lean-to sort of set-up for riding parties, maybe using a huge hollow
tree area to sleep in. We have ancient trees since this is an ancient
forest. Means big.
Eonwe Valar: OK, the Fellowship left December 25th, the scouts had been back and gave their reports seven days earlier, so the 18th.
Eonwe Valar: It was December when the scouts started coming back.
Eonwe Valar: The
biggest problem of course being that "In no region had they discovered
signs of the Riders or other servents of the Enemy." hehe. Though it
said the wolves were out hunting.
ArPharazonV: So... we messed up pretty soon, eh
ArPharazonV: Anyway. December. Nearly winter. Long nights. Early campsite. I guess we know what's next?
ArPharazonV: To post, I mean.
Eonwe Valar: That's what happens when you insert action into a spot where relatively no actions should be found :}
Eonwe Valar: *action
Eonwe Valar: The
wild wolves were active, the spiders could've been too. The biggest
problem I'd say was in our story that there was a driving force behind
them, but too late to change that now.
VardaValar1: Or we all died so the report never came back. Presumed spider food.
Eonwe Valar: Hehe
ArPharazonV: Or we came back with little relevant information to the company but top secret to our future mission in Angmar...
ArPharazonV: and our reports were never made public? :-)
VardaValar1: There you go. It had nothing to do with where the Fellowship was going, but bad for the local area.
ArPharazonV:
"So far we know... the scouts discovered no signs of Riders or other
servants of the enemy. But.... there's this hushed up report...."
VardaValar1: Elrond knows about it. :-)
ArPharazonV: "Oh well, it's not important for you fellowshippers. You just be on your way."
ArPharazonV: I bet he does!
Eonwe Valar: "Servants of the Enemy" could be taken to mean higher level dealings than spiders as well.
ArPharazonV: like a patrol of Orcs? or a people-possessing sorcerer with a lesser ring?
Eonwe Valar: Hehe.
Eonwe Valar: Yeah, those would mess that up. :}
ArPharazonV: or a huge battle in northwest Mirkwood where a bunch of Orcs overwhelmed a major Elven outpost?
ArPharazonV: Nahhh, nothing important. Don't even give it a second thought.
VardaValar1: It's just Mirkwood. Normal happenings.
ArPharazonV: Yeah, we get this thing every other week.
VardaValar1: hehe
ArPharazonV:
But as I think we now know a bit about the next sequence of posts, I
think I'll go to bed. I'll leave it up to you to decide here whether we
camp or not, and what the specifics are going to be.
ArPharazonV: saving and sending transcript
ArPharazonV (7:34:48 PM): saved
VardaValar1 (7:34:49 PM): Thanks, Phar. Rest well.
ArPharazonV (7:38:10 PM): And sent. Remember, if you discuss anything else about the RP, do it in here
ArPharazonV (7:40:27 PM): Namarie all!
Eonwe Valar (7:41:10 PM): Sleep well Phar.
ArPharazonV (7:41:24 PM): Thanks to both
ArPharazonV (7:41:38 PM): I'm sure I will!
VardaValar1 (7:41:39 PM):
ArPharazonV (7:41:49 PM): bye
ArPharazonV (7:41:51 PM) has left the room.
karakedi25 (7:47:43 PM): I guess I'll wait to see what happens before I post any more for Meren.
VardaValar1 (7:47:58 PM): We are mounting and taking off.
VardaValar1 (7:48:15 PM): If you want, you can put in a post about taking off in haste with the group.
VardaValar1 (7:48:39 PM): Before orcs start looking for the missing sentry.
Eonwe Valar (7:58:46 PM): Once
they do find the body, they'll catch on quick it wasn't spiders, hehe.
Also quite likely they'll realize it wasn't a Mirkwood Elf, as it was
beheaded and not just perforated with arrows :}
karakedi25 (7:58:47 PM): I think I'll wait
karakedi25 (7:59:06 PM): unless I'm inspired
VardaValar1 (7:59:37 PM): Well at least you got your wish for RP chat.
karakedi25 (7:59:49 PM): indeed
karakedi25 (8:00:20 PM): It will be interesting to see where the RP goes.
Eonwe Valar (8:07:42 PM): I
was just commenting to Varda in a side-chat that it wouldn't be
far-fetched that at our next camping spot we come across a hunting
party already camping there.
Eonwe Valar (8:16:53 PM): If there were, it would give a chance for new intel on troop movements, as well as safety in numbers.
VardaValar1 (8:16:55 PM): Posted
Eonwe Valar (8:17:24 PM): Rushing over to read :}
VardaValar1 (8:17:37 PM): hehehe
VardaValar1 (8:17:53 PM): I may add names later if no one else comes up with any.
Eonwe Valar (8:18:56 PM): Aye,
names would be nice, but there's also no reason we have to assume we'll
meet these Elves again within the storyline either. It would certainly
make the Mirkwood of our story feel more lived-in if we're not the only
good-guys roaming about :}
Eonwe Valar (8:19:56 PM): I
know of course we've met scouts and guards along the way, but haven't
spent too much time with any of them along the road really.
VardaValar1 (8:20:14 PM): Since Fainan knows them well, she should use names. I'm just putting up something right quick. : )
Eonwe Valar (8:20:21 PM): ok :}
VardaValar1 (8:20:53 PM): Imagine she is introducing people as we go.
VardaValar1 (8:21:08 PM): You guys can add that in or take it as a given.
VardaValar1 (8:21:50 PM): After introductions had been made all around, ... That sort of thing.
Eonwe Valar (8:23:12 PM): :}
Eonwe Valar (8:35:51 PM): So, we're camping inside a tree, correct?
VardaValar1 (8:36:34 PM): more or less. It has a porch of branches and junk to make it bigger, and give a spot for a fire and horses.
Eonwe Valar (8:36:46 PM): ok
VardaValar1 (8:37:04 PM): I wasn't entirely clear.
Eonwe Valar (8:37:24 PM): :}
VardaValar1 (8:37:31 PM): The sleeping area is inside the tree for dryness.
VardaValar1 (8:37:46 PM): I didn't mention the guard flets up higher on the tree. tum te tum
Eonwe Valar (8:37:46 PM): Ok. I was just trying to make sure I had a clear picutre in my head :}
VardaValar1 (8:37:52 PM): Good idea
Eonwe Valar (8:37:56 PM): *picture
Eonwe Valar (9:08:35 PM): Posted. Enjoy.
VardaValar1 (10:12:39 PM): Nice post, Eonwe.
VardaValar1 (10:12:54 PM): I'll be gone most of the day tomorrow, seminar.
VardaValar1 (10:13:04 PM): Namarie!
