Some of the creatures in real life that we think of
as not having speech do have speech in Tolkien's story. Can you name
any?
Before-meeting:
You have just entered room "valarguildmeetingplace."
Eonwe Valar has entered the room.
arwenv1 has entered the room.
VardaValar1 has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: Heya
Fladrifv has entered the room.
arwenv1: Hi!
ArPharazonV: there, just finished Azuremyst with my lock, right on time for meeting
VardaValar1: Aiya Pharazon, Eonwe, Arwen, and Fladrif :-)
Fladrifv: Aiya
ArPharazonV: Aiya all
Eonwe Valar: How goes it?
VardaValar1: Getting a lot of odd Invite failed messages.
VardaValar1: Elwing is at my house, Sauron is here for a few more hours and they say hi. : )
VardaValar1: Hi's from Bilbo, Eowyn, and Fangorn. : )
Eonwe Valar: Heya to them :}
VardaValar1: Bilbo is on WoW for a short time, Elwing and Fangorn will probably be on after the X-Men 2 movie we were watching.

VardaValar1: Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
VardaValar1: Membership
VardaValar1: Since we're already on Membership news, might as well make it "official". ;-)
Star of Phaet has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Gilraen : )
VardaValar1: Eonwe has some good news. : )
Star of Phaet: Aiya
Star of Phaet: Ooh?
Eonwe Valar: I have cable now :}
Eonwe Valar: cable internet that is :}
VardaValar1: That means he gets to do things like LotRO now, as well as being super duper on WoW. : )
Star of Phaet: awesome!
VardaValar1: Now if we can just get your brother to finish reading.... ;-)
Eonwe Valar: hehe
VardaValar1: Eowyn is back from the hospital after 4 pints of blood, doing a good bit better, not well, but definitely better.
Eonwe Valar: Ouch
VardaValar1: So things are looking up here too.
VardaValar1: Any of the rest of you have news? Doing ok getting settled into new college schedules and places to stay?
VardaValar1: More news here.
VardaValar1: We have a new member, Amroth-(V) :-)
VardaValar1: He's read H and LotR, and has been questing and raiding with us.
VardaValar1: His favorite LotR character is Gandalf, which most of us can agree with as a top one on our list.
VardaValar1: He's in LoTRO with us.
VardaValar1: Another has completed the test and having trouble finding
a character he thinks is in the books, who he wants to have as primary
name.
VardaValar1: As far as I know there is no such character, but perhaps one of you knows.
VardaValar1: It's a messenger sent from Fangorn to find the Entwives who never returned.
Eonwe Valar: Hmm, as I recall, the Ents went looking for themselves.
VardaValar1: If one of you remembers this character, let me know. The person may not exist in the books.
VardaValar1: Aye, for a time they did.
VardaValar1: I do not remember any such character and suspect it's
something our friend saw outside. He thinks it was around 1970 and has
become somewhat hooked on the idea.
OrodrethV has entered the room.
Pallando Valar has entered the room.
Oessala has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Pallando! : )
OrodrethV: Auya
VardaValar1: Good to see you! How goes marine training? : )
ArPharazonV: Aiya Pallando and his 2 clones..
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: When Pallando comes in, he fills up a room. : )
Oessala: Hmm.
Oessala: Nope.
Pallando Valar: Had to figure out where to talk.
VardaValar1: Tricky : )
Pallando Valar: It all looks the same. ._.
VardaValar1: Three mouths, no waiting. Or thirty fingers.
Srekal86 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: We're in Membership news if you'd like to let us know how things are going for you, Pallando.
VardaValar1: Heya Srekal. : )
Srekal86: allo.
Pallando Valar: The training is going well. Actually, in unrelated news, I have my black belt exam on march 1 .
VardaValar1: May you be coordinated that day. : )
Pallando Valar: I'll lose coordination for endurance any day.
VardaValar1: Ok, good fortune with that too then. : )
VardaValar1: Any further membership news before we switch to Web?
Pallando Valar: Think that's it for me. Ship to boot may 27, but I think I emailed that to you.
VardaValar1: Nice to tell it where all can hear it here, though. Thank you.

VardaValar1: Web:
VardaValar1: Glorfindel's new music piece is up: "Luthien's Spell":
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/music/media/GlorfindelV/works/LuthiensSpell.mp3
VardaValar1: This is an instrumental for the time that Beren first saw Luthien dancing and fell in love with her, "bespelled".
VardaValar1: New links up also, one I definitely recommend checking out when you have a bit of time is a live movie, "Journey of the Ring".
VardaValar1: It was done benefitting their local fire station and raised a good bit of money.
VardaValar1: http://www.journeyofthering.com/index.php
VardaValar1: The web master plays the black rider on the bike : )
VardaValar1: He also put up a site for news on the upcoming Hobbit and prequel movies, or hopefully upcoming:
VardaValar1: "Hobbit Central":
VardaValar1: http://hobbitcentral.com/index.php
VardaValar1: He contacted me by email to put up the links, so I've
checked them out for you and they have not harmed my computers. : )
VardaValar1: New Line Cinema is having problems again so the Hobbit is once again probably delayed.
VardaValar1: Seems they may have stiffed the Tolkien Estate as well as
PJ, and the Estate is asking for a part of its promised money.
VardaValar1: Maybe New Line is feeling the pinch, as they asked us to
put up a banner advertising their shop for merchandise, and were
willing to give me a cut.
VardaValar1: I gave them a link and said no to the cut, but you can still enjoy perusing the LotR goodies if you like.
VardaValar1: Main shop:
VardaValar1: http://www.newlineshop.com/
VardaValar1: LotR goodies:
VardaValar1: http://www.newlineshop.com/cat/Lord-of-the-Rings/
VardaValar1: If anyone wants an article on the Tolkien Estate lawsuit, here is one:
VardaValar1: from Cinematic:
VardaValar1: http://www.cinematical.com/2008/02/11/new-lawsuit-may-kill-the-hobbit/
VardaValar1: It won't kill the movie, I'm pretty sure, but maybe New Line will be more careful next time.
VardaValar1: Any other web news?
VardaValar1: Comments?
VardaValar1: I do recommend listening to Glorfindel's music if your computer allows it. : )
VardaValar1: Gaming:
Glorfindel VG has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Glorfindel! We were just telling about your music being up, "Luthien's Spell". : )
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/music/media/GlorfindelV/works/LuthiensSpell.mp3
VardaValar1: If we can figure out how to put your stuff in .abc files
somehow, would you mind if we played your pieces in Lord of the Rings
Online?
Glorfindel VG: ohh nice
Glorfindel VG: no i don't mind : )
VardaValar1: Fantastic! Thank you, most generous.
VardaValar1: Now I have to figure out how...
Glorfindel VG: brb phone

VardaValar1: Gaming:
VardaValar1: What games non-LotRO and non-WoW has anyone played this week? : )
VardaValar1: Bilbo played Team Fortress 2 as The Beer Wench
Pallando Valar: I've been on TF2 a bit.
VardaValar1: Nice : )
Pallando Valar: And eve, ofcourse, but Pallando's back in semi-hibernation.
ArPharazonV: I've done a lot of Zuma
Pallando Valar: Too much fun on my main. :p
VardaValar1: : )
ArPharazonV: horribly addicting game...
ArPharazonV: does anyone here know it?
VardaValar1: Sounds vaguely familiar
VardaValar1: Anything to do with Montezuma? : )
ArPharazonV: well, the style is a bit like that
VardaValar1: Lest I forget, Ugluk said hi to us by email. : ) Hasn't been gaming lately, but maybe things will be less hectic in the future.
ArPharazonV: Inca, Aztek, etc
ArPharazonV: a line of balls runs across the screen towards a target
and you have to fire balls of a certain color to make lines of 3 or
more of the same colors, which will then explode
ArPharazonV: your goal is to let none of the balls reach the target
Pallando Valar: off to work o/
VardaValar1: Farewell : )
ArPharazonV: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuma_(computer_game) seems to have the necessary info :-)
VardaValar1: On to WoW
VardaValar1: Do we have an Argent Dawn server report?
VardaValar1: Pharazon?
ArPharazonV: thinking, but... nothing comes to mind, think the last
thing we did was already reported last week, and not sure we did
anything else this week...
ArPharazonV: except talk,of course
VardaValar1: Talk is fun : )
ArPharazonV: I think Arien had some potential recruits, though, but I don't know the details
VardaValar1: Big fancy chat programs. : )
VardaValar1: That is good to hear. Good luck to finding one in the potentials!
VardaValar1: Lothar:
ArPharazonV: thanks :-)
VardaValar1: We've been gaming in Lothar off and on all week, various ones of us.
VardaValar1: Making progress, pairing and triples mostly, but fun.
VardaValar1: I'm still working towards making 20 slot bags.
VardaValar1: Uldaman:
ArPharazonV: *grin* just bought my 6th
VardaValar1: Wednesday we were all in Lothar.
VardaValar1: Bought, aye, but I am working on making. Murder, they earned whatever you spent1
VardaValar1: !
Eonwe Valar: I managed to get some time to pop into Lothar on Friday.
Chatted with Elwing and helped her find the Dragonscale Leatherworker.
ArPharazonV: eh, 390, I thought it rather cheap
VardaValar1: Uldaman, we mostly played hooky and were in Lothar instead, those that played.
VardaValar1: Thank you, Eonwe!
VardaValar1: LotRO:
VardaValar1: As earlier mentioned, we have our new member there, Amroth-V, playing as Labellas.
VardaValar1: We met him as Lhee, but he doesn't want to lose his kinhouse on that character by changing kins on it.
VardaValar1: We had the Book 12 giant update, quite a lot of new stuff, patch notes available, or better yet go play it. : )
VardaValar1: but they will be doing maintenance Tuesday, partly a reaction to the public's reaction.
VardaValar1: Angmar is a lot smoother on the storyline and quests.
VardaValar1: New outfits, barbers, trophies.
VardaValar1: Any other business? Comments? Suggestions?
VardaValar1: How many people are live? Please say aye
VardaValar1: aye
ArPharazonV: aye
ArPharazonV: *cough*
VardaValar1: Arien sent a message, said hi, exhausting work schedule, no recruits just messages calling for them. Going to bed.
VardaValar1: Phar, maybe I should let you get in a nap too. : )
ArPharazonV: nah, tomorrow starts at 10:30, I'll be allright
VardaValar1: Anyone have suggestions on space for music files? I have a lead or two, nothing quite definite.
VardaValar1: okies

VardaValar1: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: Tolkien showed certain creatures speaking or thinking in a
spoken style, that we don't usually think of that way. What are some of
these?
VardaValar1: (Valarites? :-) )
VardaValar1: Sorry, very bad.
ArPharazonV: hmm...
ArPharazonV: trying to unwrap the sentence in my mind, seeing if I can understand it
VardaValar1: Sorry.
thesirg3 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Some of the creatures in real life that we think of as not
having speech do have speech in Tolkien's story. Can you name any?
ArPharazonV: ..trees?
ArPharazonV: technically I suppose eagles do have speech in real life, but we don't understand it
VardaValar1: Aye : )
VardaValar1: Fladrif, for instance. ; )
ArPharazonV: well, he should speak more in here, but I think he's busy with his website
Eonwe Valar: The trees speak to the Ents.
VardaValar1: True, Eonwe
VardaValar1: I don't seem to have a link to Fladrif's page on the Membership page.
VardaValar1: If he'd like, we could put it on there.
VardaValar1: Ents would not normally be expected to speak, as they appear to be trees.
ArPharazonV: it's far from ready, I'll let him introduce it himself when he feels so :-)
Glorfindel VG: that one fox in the shire thought it odd to see 3 hobbits out and about after dark
VardaValar1: ok, if it's not ready, should wait, aye.
VardaValar1: Aye! I was hoping someone would mention that. : )
Glorfindel VG: hehe
VardaValar1: It suggests a whole other world going on underfoot.
VardaValar1: (LotRO lets you play a chicken who gets to see that side, but can't talk to "people".)
Glorfindel VG: haha
Glorfindel VG: sounds fun
VardaValar1: Eagles, such as Gwaihir, spoke
VardaValar1: It is. But it's tough, hardcore play.
Glorfindel VG: the spiders spoke
VardaValar1: Help escort any chicken player you seed. : )
VardaValar1: Aye, and understood Bilbo's insulting "Addercop" and other words.
VardaValar1: So the elves of Mirkwood faced an intelligent, organized enemy in those spiders.
VardaValar1: *see
Glorfindel VG: The elves had a certain power or way of dealing with the animals
Glorfindel VG: and communicating with horses and things in some way
VardaValar1: Aye, they had a way with all good animals.
VardaValar1: At the entrance to the Paths of the Dead, Legolas settled Arod down that way.
Eonwe Valar: This sort of reminds me of that episode of Star Trek:
Voyager where a Q is trying to convince Captain Janeway why he should
be allowed to become mortal and die...
Eonwe Valar: He starts listing off everything he's tried in the Q
Continuum as represented to the Captain, and ends it with "I was even
the dog for a while. (Or something like that)"
Eonwe Valar: The other Q then says "We've all been that."
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: Dog players.
Eonwe Valar: The chicken player thing particularly brought it to mind.
VardaValar1: The orcs worked with wargs that they rode, possibly a holdover from elvish ability?
VardaValar1: Really big lizards, bred up to be called dragons, could discuss quite intelligently.
Eonwe Valar: It was probably more of a convenience thing.
VardaValar1: Could be.
Eonwe Valar: the wargs.
VardaValar1: Like horses.
Glorfindel VG: the black riders seemed to be able to communicate with the beasts they rode
Eonwe Valar: I think my Voyager reference killed the conversation..
VardaValar1: Aye, and used the senses of the horses.
Glorfindel VG: acting as their eyes and ears and all that
Glorfindel VG: yea
VardaValar1: Even stones could communicate.
VardaValar1: They had memories.
VardaValar1: Legolas listened to the ones in Hollin/Eregion before they reached Moria.
Eonwe Valar: Aye.
Eonwe Valar: Seems the Nazgul had some understanding with their horses if I recall.
Eonwe Valar: "understanding" being closer to "now you serve the Dark Lord."
VardaValar1: Aye, as Glorfindel said.
VardaValar1: hehe
Glorfindel VG: shadowfax seemed to comminucate to gandalf too i think
Eonwe Valar: Aye, the mearas had quite a lineage.
VardaValar1: Aye!
Glorfindel VG: didnt it say something about eorls horse talking
Glorfindel VG: im not sure
VardaValar1: Nahar spoke
Glorfindel VG: nice
Glorfindel VG: heh
Eonwe Valar: Nahar was the horseof Oromë
Eonwe Valar: Felarof I believe was Eorl's horse, and the one through which the horses of the Kings of Rohan are descended.
Glorfindel VG: goodl old huan spoke a couple of times hehe
ArPharazonV: 3 times unless I'm mistaken!
VardaValar1: Felarof was a Meara.
VardaValar1: Aye, yay Huan. : )
VardaValar1: Only allowed to speak three times, so it had to be important.
VardaValar1: The Mearas understood human speech.
ArPharazonV: wondered why they just couldn't give him a piece of paper
to put the words on... and save him the trouble of speaking too soon!
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: He was trying to appear to be a dog. : )
Eonwe Valar: Good luck handing him a quill and inkwell :}
ArPharazonV: he could like... take it in his mouth...
VardaValar1: I feel a comic coming on somehow.
Eonwe Valar: I'll leave it to Phar to put the quill in Huan's mouth :}
VardaValar1: Hope he does not have the luck of Beren with Carcharoth and that Silmaril.
ArPharazonV: nah, Huan's a lot friendlier
Glorfindel VG: i wouldnt test him though :o
VardaValar1: Good point. : )
top
After-meeting:
VardaValar1: Huan-(Valar) found this spot about music files .abc type:
VardaValar1: http://www.walshaw.plus.com/abc/
VardaValar1: Sorry, Farmer Maggot found it.
VardaValar1: We were just talking about Huan, I apologize for the slip.
Eonwe Valar: Happens :}
Glorfindel VG: did someone say they were playing tf2 ?
Glorfindel VG: ive been playing that game alot this week
thesirg3: ah I play it sometimes
Glorfindel VG: its fun
Glorfindel VG: we should play together sometime
VardaValar1: What's a day and time that might be reasonable for you two?
thesirg3: we've been talking off-chat
Glorfindel VG: Anytime is good
Glorfindel VG: we're adding eachother to the friends list
VardaValar1: Pallando said he'd been playing it.
Glorfindel VG: so you can see when they are in game and where
VardaValar1: Great : )
VardaValar1: Pallando Valar for your friend lis
VardaValar1: t
thesirg3: already have him I think
VardaValar1: cool
VardaValar1: I'm going to call this After-meeting
VardaValar1: and go see to my family and guest. : )
VardaValar1: Namarie for now
Glorfindel VG: bye bye
VardaValar1 has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: Take care :}
Fladrifv: I wished there where 48 hours a day.....
thesirg3: I'd probably just sleep more
thesirg3: :-P
ArPharazonV: yes, we'd still end up spending the same time asleep :P
Fladrifv: the thing is that only with 48 hours a day I can get some sleep too :-)
thesirg3: heh
Fladrifv: I have grown hasty lately
Eonwe Valar: Good? :}
Fladrifv: keeps me awake
Eonwe Valar: hehe
Fladrifv: if anyone is interested I can paste a link to some artwork I make
ArPharazonV: ah, the website I told Varda about earlier :-)
Fladrifv: no that one is not ready yet
Fladrifv: despite my hastyness
ArPharazonV: *smile*
Fladrifv: my first design deemed impossible with plain html css
Eonwe Valar: PHP might be something to look into then.
ArPharazonV: I, hrm, should be going now
Eonwe Valar: Take care Phar.
thesirg3 has left the room.
Fladrifv: namarie
Fladrifv: php is not a bad idea....
arwenv1 has left the room.
