CaranthirV: Aiya
Menelvagor Valar has entered the room.
Menelvagor Valar: Busy in The Eye
CaranthirV: long time no see
ArPharazonV: just came home about half an hour ago, so I'll be doing some WoW dailies during the meeting
Star of Phaet has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Hail :-)
CaranthirV: Im sorry i cant stay for long
VardaValar1: What is a "daily"
CaranthirV: Its my birthday :p
VardaValar1: Glad you could drop by : )
VardaValar1: Happy Birthday, Caranthir!
arwenv1: :-)
CaranthirV: thank you
ArPharazonV: a daily is a quest in WoW you can do once a day
ArPharazonV: you can do 10 different dailies every day
VardaValar1: Thanks
ArPharazonV: usually give you rep and good cash as rewards
ArPharazonV: major source of income at 70
CaranthirV: Yea i got my netherdrake last week
VardaValar1: I'm only 65, can I do them too?
ArPharazonV: you need flying skill for nearly all, and epic flying skill for half of them, so...
ArPharazonV: probably not :-)
VardaValar1: Congrats, Caranthir. Just in time for your birthday flight. : )
CaranthirV: haha yup
Xseanzee disco has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Gil-galad
ArPharazonV: and congrats Caranthir :-)
VardaValar1: And hi to Arwen, Menelvagor, and Gilraen. : )
arwenv1: Could do the regular instance daily and the cooking daily and the pvp daily
arwenv1: as 65 :-)
ArPharazonV: oh, right!
VardaValar1: Thanks, Arwen
ArPharazonV: there's new dailies in the latest patch
Menelvagor Valar: Just killed Void Reaver.
Menelvagor Valar: Only died 3 times :-)
CaranthirV: Grats lol
arwenv1: I love the Void Reaver fight :-)
ArPharazonV: however, there's a few different cooking dailies
VardaValar1: Amazing how you just get right back up
ArPharazonV: and for all but one, you need epic flying skill anyway
CaranthirV: Vash fight is still my favorite :p
ArPharazonV: ehrr, no, just normal flying skill
arwenv1: the netherwing ones require epic flying skill
Menelvagor Valar: actually, I could have died 4 times :-)
ArPharazonV: yes, but the cooking dailies don't
arwenv1: but there are 6 you can do that just require regular flying
VardaValar1: Skipping one death is quite alright.
ArPharazonV: there are about.. 4 different cooking dailies?
ArPharazonV: 3 of em need a flying mount
arwenv1: about
arwenv1: a few of them need flying mount, yes
ArPharazonV: and for the fourth, a flying mount is quite useful too ;-)
arwenv1: :-)
VardaValar1: Caranthir, do you ever come on Lothar anymore? Or Uldaman? We still use Valar channel.
VardaValar1: Fangorn, Eowyn, and Galdor say hi from Lothar right now. : )
CaranthirV: No im sorry
CaranthirV: i recently traded my account
VardaValar1: np, just so you know we're still around.
CaranthirV: for a horde warlock
VardaValar1: On which server?
CaranthirV has left the room.
VardaValar1: We sometimes do leapfrog play with Horde by Alliance and vice versa, friendly questing, including emotes for talk
ArPharazonV: trading accounts.. dangerous business
ArPharazonV: don't know the other's reputation among other players, his gear, his cash...
ArPharazonV: unless you know the other player quite well, I wouldn't advise it :-)
CaranthirV has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Caranthir fell out
ArPharazonV: hmm
VardaValar1: He's back now.
Glorfindel VG has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Glorfindel : )
CaranthirV: yea sorry connection went out and lost the entire window
ArPharazonV: well, it's too late for him anyway, just commenting on the concept of trading accounts ;-)
Glorfindel VG: Hello
VardaValar1: ArPharazonV: unless you know the other player quite well, I wouldn't advise it :-)
VardaValar1: Shall we start? Sooner to turn you all loose. : )
VardaValar1: Don't forget to let me know if you have a report so we don't accidentally leave you out.

VardaValar1: Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!

VardaValar1: No new folk this week that I know of, although we have some new alts.
VardaValar1: Remember that this is the end of the year when we figure out who is going to be with us for next year.
VardaValar1: If you see people who seem to not have the Confirmed for 2008 on the Members page, please let me know. Email, AIM, in-game, whatever works.
VardaValar1: Contact by Forum works too.
VardaValar1: Caranthir's birthday is today :-)
VardaValar1: Would you be willing to tell us your new age?
CaranthirV: 20
VardaValar1: Woot! Right on the 20 mark! Cool.
CaranthirV: haha def :-)
VardaValar1: Any further member news, mentions of people whom you've seen that might need to be told to me so they aren't accidentally dropped?

VardaValar1: Web:
VardaValar1: Tolkien Site (which you are all welcome to add to):
VardaValar1: Stories:
VardaValar1: (pardon, Windows 97 is grinding away trying to stay with me)
Glorfindel VG: Can I confirm that I am not being dropped :o
Glorfindel VG: I have been away for a while because I just moved to Colorado
Glorfindel VG: but I'm settled in now
VardaValar1: Welcome to Colorado! Maybe you can see Melkor someday. : )
Glorfindel VG: So, Melkor set up his stronghold in Colorado ey?
VardaValar1: Long ago. Be careful! ;-)
Glorfindel VG: ha ha
ArPharazonV: I always knew Colorado was the new Angband.. just had a feeling!
VardaValar1: Glorfindel are now confirmed, should show online after a refresh or reload.
VardaValar1: Cold mountains, that's the attraction. : )
VardaValar1: trying again on those stories: : )
VardaValar1: "Family Trouble" by Cassia and Siobhan. 5 chapters.
VardaValar1: New one after a very long dry spell. New jobs and a feeling of having run out of ideas for a while, before they started returning.
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/fiction/authorsT/CassiaSiobhan/stories/FamilyTrouble/Trouble1.htm
VardaValar1: "Coronation Jitters" by Siobhan for Cassia. 1 chapter
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/fiction/authorsT/CassiaSiobhan/stories/CoronationJitters/CoronationJitters.htm
VardaValar1: Oh, more membership news
VardaValar1: Eonwe is not present as he went with family to see "Beowulf" :-)
CaranthirV has left the room.
CaranthirV has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Tolkienesque activity anyway : )
VardaValar1: "Letters from Elrohir" by Jay of Lasgalen
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/fiction/authorsT/JayofLasgalen/stories/LettersfromElrohir/LettertoArwen.htm
VardaValar1: This is intended to be a series of ten letters.
VardaValar1: The first two are interesting to read together, since they tell the same thing from very different points of view.
VardaValar1: or rather, different intended audiences
CaranthirV: Unfortunately i most be going. have to drive up to Baton Rouge. Namarie!
VardaValar1: Namarie!
CaranthirV has left the room.
VardaValar1: We have a new link in the Links page
VardaValar1: for the Tolkien section on the LotRO website.
VardaValar1: It has a bit of gaming questing mixed into it, but also actual articles and an interactive calendar translator for different races - Shire, Gondor, etc - along with the Gregorian calendar.
VardaValar1: http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Category:Lore
VardaValar1: Any other web goodies?
top

VardaValar1: Gaming:
VardaValar1: Any games besides WoW or LotRO played this last week?
ArPharazonV: bit of Dungeon Siege, not much
VardaValar1: 1 or 2?
ArPharazonV: 1, expansion
VardaValar1: thanks
VardaValar1: Phar or Menel, which of you would like to handle the WoW Argent Dawn server report?
ArPharazonV: weell, I guess there's 2 reports, as I did something with Arien, and Menel did something with Arien...
VardaValar1: One apiece, nice. : )
ArPharazonV: but with Menel busy raiding, both might fall on me
ArPharazonV: Urwendi and I, as well as a few friends from both the guilds we're in, went to see Onyxia
ArPharazonV: big black dragon, old 40-man raid, but we had about... 8 people or so
VardaValar1: A bit of adrenaline?
ArPharazonV: a bit messy, but she fell anyway, and we went home with about 30g each and some loot
ArPharazonV: *nod*
VardaValar1: Congratulations!
ArPharazonV: also, Arien told me she went to Underbog somewhere this week with Menelvagor's alt... Morningsong, I think
ArPharazonV: there were some delays and it got rather late, but they got all their quests done anyway, or so I'm told
VardaValar1: The alt works for Menelvagor, creative!
ArPharazonV: oh, right, I hadn't told you I was done yet...
ArPharazonV: allright, I'm done with the report
VardaValar1: Thanks, two reports from the esteemed Golden One!
VardaValar1: Lothar had a few of us on, has three on right now that I know of.
VardaValar1: Friday was a rough night for most of us to come in, although some popped in briefly such as Elwing before going to a work Christmas party. [Note: Varda, Fangorn, Eonwe gamed in Terrokar Forest and knocked off a batch of quests.]
VardaValar1: Eonwe, I think Dracxil (who comes on during the week a bit)
VardaValar1: Galdor is on a lot, his new character is already 54 and he is very good at making money.
VardaValar1: He is telling us that he's going for enough for a flying mount by 60, whether or not he can ride it.
VardaValar1: Good luck!
VardaValar1: Uldaman: Elwing is still a regular there
VardaValar1: Theodwyn got tired of how little she saw Valar and decided to make a new family guild, as she liked the idea.
VardaValar1: When we know the name, we'll pass it on. Elwing says she's sticking with Valar though.
VardaValar1: I ran some of my Horde there too, but missed the timing. Got a level though.
VardaValar1: LotRO:
VardaValar1: That is definitely our busiest Valar game.
VardaValar1: We have most of our people there and we have regulars who are there a lot.
VardaValar1: New alts popping up. This week Ulmo's Linqil alt joined the branch and Sauron's Naugann was built to join later. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
VardaValar1: Much questing and crafting.
VardaValar1: Plus we do questing and instances with some friend guilds
VardaValar1: Black Lions, Palantiri, and invited to play with Keepers of Ayrshire as well.
VardaValar1: This lets us do instances that are hard to collect enough people for, for all of those groups.
VardaValar1: Any further gaming news?
VardaValar1: Anyone else joining LotRO and need to pop into Landroval?
ArPharazonV: small fact, my druid is now once more down to 7g....
ArPharazonV: not a lot, for a lvl 70
VardaValar1: We [LotRO] also got new ponies for use at level 25 for lifetime members and for those who were in the beta.
VardaValar1: What have you been buying, Phar? : )
ArPharazonV: just bought myself the mats for one heck of an expensive chestpiece
ArPharazonV: I'll have to do a few more days of dailies before I can afford to socket it and enchant it ;-)
VardaValar1: Make you a spiffy-looking raider?
VardaValar1: Any guildies that can help you cut the costs?
ArPharazonV: nah, it's mostly my own soloing gear
VardaValar1: So a Spiffy Soloer!
ArPharazonV: could have farmed most of the mats myself if I hadn't been that lazy, but figured it better to buy all the stuff and spend my time making money instead
VardaValar1: so you can buy stuff...
ArPharazonV: exactly!
VardaValar1: The feedback loop that is gaming.
ArPharazonV: buy stuff, use it to make more money, and use money to buy more stuff
ArPharazonV: yep, pretty much
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: Any further business? Sort of business?
ArPharazonV: there's a different but related cycle in raiding...
VardaValar1: What is that?
ArPharazonV: loot stuff, use stuff to kill higher bosses, and loot them too
VardaValar1: hehe, but a more fun cycle.
VardaValar1: At least you can see progress if you are going to new, bigger bosses.
ArPharazonV: true enough
ArPharazonV: but then they put in more bosses
VardaValar1: hmm, don't guess D&D tabletop gaming counts, although we had 3 guild members in it? : )
ArPharazonV: it's like one of those dreams where you run towards the light but the further you run, the further away the light seems to move
VardaValar1: Ever more light!
ArPharazonV: in this case the light being the last boss *nod*
VardaValar1: Like running past street lamps.
ArPharazonV: kill it, and suddenly you have 10 more waiting
VardaValar1: How many are here who would like to participate in some LotR and Hobbit only trivia?
ArPharazonV: here, or on forum?
ArPharazonV: or in some game?
VardaValar1: Here. About to go to Tolkien.
ArPharazonV: sure, allright with me
ArPharazonV: just busy mining mithril anyway
VardaValar1: Wondered if it was just you and me left.
ArPharazonV: and no, not in Moria :-)
VardaValar1: Sounds like a Tolkienesque activity.
ArPharazonV: I need 5 more ores for the next blacksmithing quest, mined about 40 of em already in the last 2 evenings
VardaValar1: LotRO will have Moria, and mining, surely. : )
VardaValar1: You're getting there!
VardaValar1: One of our WoW gaming capable computers is in the shop, in critical condition. We hope it lives.
VardaValar1: So the five of us are having an interesting time sharing game time. Glad everyone is pleasant about it.
top

VardaValar1: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: Tolkien trivia players available are Phar and Var? Anyone else?
VardaValar1: If we stick to LotR, maybe someone else will give it a shot.
VardaValar1: Phar, fire when ready.
ArPharazonV: hmm, me first, then?
VardaValar1: Aye, since it's just you and me and you start with A. : )
ArPharazonV: ok, what was made of mithril that was worth more than the value of the Shire?
VardaValar1: We can whisper the answer to the asker : )
ArPharazonV: we can?
VardaValar1: He can say who all got it if he likes
ArPharazonV: ah
ArPharazonV: ok, so.. Varda was the only one with the right answer
ArPharazonV: so go ahead!
VardaValar1: For the transcript, we should probably tell the answer.
VardaValar1: the right one, anyway
ArPharazonV: it's a bit odd with only 2 people playing, though
Glorfindel VG: Im back
ArPharazonV: but sure, answer is.. Bilbo's mithril shirt
VardaValar1: Glor, whisper the answer to the asker. We're trying this system.
Glorfindel VG: okay
VardaValar1: Who led the elves that helped Frodo and his three hobbit friends against a Nazgul in the Shire area?
VardaValar1: Maybe I didn't ask that well. No answers.
ArPharazonV: I'm thinking...
VardaValar1: His group were the first elves that Sam got to see on the journey.
VardaValar1: He was hoping to see elves, and this answered his wish. : )
ArPharazonV: I know who he is, but not sure of his name..
VardaValar1: Both of you got it right : )
VardaValar1: You both said Gildor
VardaValar1: Gildor Inglorion.
VardaValar1: Glorfindel, your turn to ask a question.
Glorfindel VG: According to Merry on their journey through the old forest, this was said to be the queerest part of the whole forest
Glorfindel VG: which part was this?
Glorfindel VG: Varda got it: The Withywindle
Glorfindel VG: but bombadil's house was in there
VardaValar1: I got close. He said it was the Withywindle River Valley.
ArPharazonV: I said Bombadil's House, so not right :-)
ArPharazonV: didn't know that river by name, so made another guess, thought.. why not!
VardaValar1: Good idea!
Glorfindel VG: I'm sure Merry would be saying bombadils house in retrospect :-)
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: Anyone else back from afk?
VardaValar1: (They are all lurking in the shadows)
VardaValar1: Last time we tried having the questioner be whoever was not afk in alphabetical order. Sound good?
ArPharazonV: I'm afraid I should be off soon, gotta get up early tomorrow
VardaValar1: ok, thanks for gaming!
ArPharazonV: no prob
VardaValar1: Hope you got plenty of mithril!
ArPharazonV: got my mithril too :-)
ArPharazonV: 3 ores to spare, even!
VardaValar1: excellent!
VardaValar1: hehe - excellenter
ArPharazonV: but that's good, because the next phase of this questline's gonna need even more ;-)
VardaValar1: What was the name of the skeleton in the Paths of the Dead?
VardaValar1: (spelling optional)
VardaValar1: His name always makes me think of someone from Norse mythology.
VardaValar1: He also died in gaming.
VardaValar1: Need to let Phar go. He came closest. Baldor.
ArPharazonV: Baldor... reminds you of that Norse God then... Balder or something?
VardaValar1: He swore at feast that he would try the Paths of the Dead, and unfortunately did.
VardaValar1: Right, Phar.
VardaValar1: Baldor is right.
ArPharazonV: I bet, ironically, he had a head full of hair...
VardaValar1: Probably!
VardaValar1: Everyone looks bald next to him. : )
top

After-meeting:
VardaValar1: Good night, Phar : )
Glorfindel VG: good night
ArPharazonV: hang on, gotta close WoW first, then I'll save and send, and then I'll go
VardaValar1: Good evening, near dark, here.
VardaValar1: Thank you!
Glorfindel VG: hasta lluego
VardaValar1: Did you like the side window system?
VardaValar1: Vaya con dios.
ArPharazonV: it should get quite confusing with multiple people
ArPharazonV: especially when deciding who gets points for the answer
VardaValar1: Likely
ArPharazonV: but overall, I guess it has its benefits
VardaValar1: With enough people, we used to get a team leader
VardaValar1: The leader of the team that answered first won
VardaValar1: Two teams, not bad.
VardaValar1: I put the two windows one over the other.
ArPharazonV: :-)
VardaValar1: Maybe people will be less shy if they can guess at an answer and not be public?
VardaValar1: Go to sleep, like your window keeps spiraling at me. ;-)
ArPharazonV: hmm, next phase will be 28 more mithril...
VardaValar1: oy vey
ArPharazonV: allright, gonna close off
Glorfindel VG: only prob is you may be getting simultaneous answers
Glorfindel VG: right answeres
Glorfindel VG: wont know who got it
VardaValar1: If it is two team leaders, it is their answer that counts
VardaValar1: The team tells the team leader in whisper
Glorfindel VG: ohh I see
Glorfindel VG: yea that would work
VardaValar1: Making up teams can be interesting : )
Xseanzee disco has left the room.
VardaValar1: Sometimes amazing the ones who think well under stress and type fast, not always the one expected to do well, who may be mulling it over.
ArPharazonV: ...I'm having serious trouble analysing that sentence
ArPharazonV: are we missing a few verbs?
VardaValar1: yes. : )
VardaValar1: It is sometimes amazing to me which people are the ones who do best in these trivia games.
VardaValar1: If they think well under stress and type fast, they may beat the one with tons of info who is mulling it over.
ArPharazonV: hmm... thanks, I get it now :-)
VardaValar1: I'm glad to be able to de-awkwardify that sentence for you. ;-)
VardaValar1: Team Fortress 2 for Glorfindel now.
ArPharazonV: oh, one more Valar-thingy, Fladrif's back in the Netherlands for a few weeks, until after New Year's, so he came to visit me yesterday evening
ArPharazonV: fun was had, playing some Trivial Pursuit or however it's called in English, and some Risk after that
ArPharazonV: we didn't play it with 2, he brought his girlfriend too, also a good friend of mine... risking with 2 people is a bit more troublesome ;-)
ArPharazonV: so that was more... Valar-grouping, I suppose, or Valar-gaming you might call it
VardaValar1: Great!
VardaValar1: Aye, we call it Trivial Pursuit too
ArPharazonV: we normally shorten it to Triviant, but I wasn't sure if the official name was spelled that way, and if it was used that way in English
VardaValar1: That is new to me. Interesting!
ArPharazonV: saved
Glorfindel VG: where are you from Phar
ArPharazonV: Netherlands
ArPharazonV: *points above to Fladrif visiting while in the Netherlands*
VardaValar1: Hi to Fladrif and his lady too!
ArPharazonV: sure, will do when I see him again :-)
ArPharazonV: sent
Glorfindel VG: I wished i lived in the netherlands
VardaValar1: Thank you : )
ArPharazonV: where are you from, Glorfindel?
Glorfindel VG: united states
ArPharazonV: and why would you prefer NL? :-)
Glorfindel VG: originally los angeles, now Im in denver
Glorfindel VG: im not sure lol
VardaValar1: Different
ArPharazonV: the grass is always greener... ;-)
VardaValar1: Grass always looks greener on the other side. Aye. : )
Glorfindel VG: It is : )
ArPharazonV: not that I'd like to live in the US, from what I hear... less healthcare etc
VardaValar1: The USA is so big, you can find nearly any type of place you like.
ArPharazonV: and with Bush running the place.. but let's not get into political discussions ;-)
VardaValar1: The media does scream a lot about health care, political football.
Glorfindel VG: well I've been to Finland and Sweden and I do feel it's an all around more pleasent place to live really
VardaValar1: We get more innovations in the US in health care than most anywhere though, and heads of state of other countries come here for care at times.
VardaValar1: Can you handle the language, Glorfindel?
ArPharazonV: European systems and governments seem to be a bit more.. social, concerning healthcare compensations and unemployment and all that
ArPharazonV: but again, that's just what I heard
VardaValar1: We also have a charity system for those who can't pay, but it overloads fast.
VardaValar1: Long lines.
Glorfindel VG: I would just say forget all the politics and go where I feel most at peace
VardaValar1: I'm there. Yay Texas!
VardaValar1: You knew that was coming. ;-)
VardaValar1: Good night, you guys. : )
ArPharazonV: so far I'm living fine in the Netherlands
ArPharazonV: but I have my eye on a few countries I'd like to move to one day
VardaValar1: And Phar is happy there. : )
VardaValar1: Visiting is wonderful though.
ArPharazonV: New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland, Scandinavia... Canada doesn't sound too bad...
ArPharazonV: maybe Switzerland
ArPharazonV: love all the landscapes!
VardaValar1: New Zealand! Check out the LotR film sites. : )
VardaValar1: Try some of the huge national parks in the US
ArPharazonV: as I said, US doesn't seem to have a very good reputation to me...
ArPharazonV: most important things would have to be a language I can learn relatively easy, bit of a moderate or maybe colder climate, and good economics and social care etc
VardaValar1: It has no one to say good things about it, only critics. : )
ArPharazonV: and not a lot of religous overhand
VardaValar1: aye
ArPharazonV: being an atheist I'd think thrice before moving to the Middle-East, for example
VardaValar1: I want to be able to wear comfy clothes, not some veiled sack either.
VardaValar1: and I'm not atheist and still agree, Phar.
ArPharazonV: and even the US seems to have a bit of a Christian overhang in a few regions
VardaValar1: Middle-east is pretty tough on the ladies.
ArPharazonV: and I'm not too fond of that either
VardaValar1: Depends on who you hang out with, Phar.
ArPharazonV: in political systems, laws, etc, I mean...
VardaValar1: Some are heavily wiccan, or other.: )
ArPharazonV: but I don't want to go into that, and therefore going to bed before I do
VardaValar1: Hang out with the Society for Creative Anachronisms!
VardaValar1: aye, sleep well. : )
ArPharazonV: SCA?
VardaValar1: Namarie all.
VardaValar1: Aye
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
ArPharazonV has left the room.
