VardaValar1: Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
VardaValar1: Membership:
VardaValar1: First off, thank you for taking time out of so many busy schedules to meet together.
VardaValar1: Manwe, who dropped back in with us very briefly, decided he was going to drop his membership at least as a regular member
VardaValar1: He will be missed, and made a big impact while he was here.
VardaValar1: In the two days that he tried out LotRO on a buddy key, he brought in a new member
VardaValar1: Amaranth-(V) is now a full and active member, gaming with us on LotRO
VardaValar1: She, as many of us, took out the lifetime membership in LotRO
VardaValar1: We have had a huge get-together in LotRO of many we have not seen for a long time, as we found a game all of us Tolkien fans think is at least interesting.
VardaValar1: Any other membership news?
mordacil has left the room.
VardaValar1: Hellos from Fangorn and Eowyn, who are right now in WoW Lothar playing their Draenei characters together.
ArPharazonV: I might not be here next week
VardaValar1: You haven't gone and annoyed Eru?
ArPharazonV: next sunday is my birthday, and I have no idea how busy I will be at meeting time
ArPharazonV: though I assume I'll be here, I just thought I'd let you know just in case
AriehnV: ah , party time :-)
VardaValar1: Congratulations on leveling! What age will you be? : )
ArPharazonV: 22
Bior the Ythling: kudos i cant say i dont envy you
Eonwe Valar: Congrats and early Happy Birthday :}
ArPharazonV: thanks :-)
Arwen V1 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Arwen : )
Arwen V1: Aiya :-)
VardaValar1: Any other membership news? : )

VardaValar1: Web News:
VardaValar1: I have a question for the group
VardaValar1: The Valar Guild puts the members' articles, stories, poetry, humor, etc online
VardaValar1: That is almost purely original work, much found nowhere else.
VardaValar1: We also do some reprints from people who like our site
VardaValar1: Those are mostly stories, rarely poetry.
VardaValar1: How do you feel about having a lot more reprints like that added? I do go over them and edit to keep up the spelling and grammar quality of the site.
VardaValar1: No opinion is also an opinion. : )
Arwen V1: I think its fine
Bior the Ythling: sounds good to me
Xseanzee disco: stellar.
Xseanzee disco: :-)
VardaValar1: Thanks. I didn't really expect such a positive response. : )
Eonwe Valar: I'd like to see more original work from our members :}
VardaValar1: I'll try to rig it so they don't swamp our original work by members.
Eonwe Valar: *nudge nudge* :}
VardaValar1: I would prefer to see that original work too. : )
VardaValar1: This group has been quite amazing, and it lets us offer work that is not anywhere else.
VardaValar1: okie dokie. Reprints will be added along with our work, but please don't think that gets you guys off the hook. ;-)
VardaValar1: Also, for the artists among you, we would love to have your illustrations for any of the articles, stories, poetry, humor, or your own original comics, etc.
VardaValar1: Any other web news?

VardaValar1: Gaming News:
VardaValar1: Games played by you this last week that are not WoW or LotRO? : )
AriehnV: I played a bit Well of Souls
ArPharazonV: Empire Earth again
VardaValar1: Is that still Aerienell?
AriehnV: due to service action *grin* which is usually when i log on there
AriehnV: aye , still Aerianell
VardaValar1: : )
VardaValar1: Nice to have a place to go when WoW is down. ; )
VardaValar1: Anyone else?
AriehnV: true and levfelling there is a lot faster hehe
VardaValar1: hehe
ArPharazonV: Empire Earth, now almost done with the German campaign
ArPharazonV: now getting to epochs of technology and missions I've never played before, so it's quite interesting to get used to it all, *and* manage to complete the mission ;-)
VardaValar1: A chance to look around at something new. : )
ArPharazonV: no more phalanxes, horsemen and archers, but tanks, planes, subs, and so much more...
ArPharazonV: really starting to get complicated!
AuSteinM: Has anybody tried Supreme Commander?
AuSteinM: (Sequel to Total Annihilation)
ArPharazonV: really? sequel to TA? I should check it out then...
AuSteinM: "Spiritual Sequel" - Lead Developer made his own company, it feels very much the same
ArPharazonV: ah, like TA: Kingdoms
AuSteinM: Other way around?
ArPharazonV: hm?
AuSteinM: Kingdoms was a TA add-on to feel different, this is a new engine which feels the same
AuSteinM: "Just try it"?
ArPharazonV: actually, I thought it felt quite the same as TA
ArPharazonV: in gameplay and interface, at least
AuSteinM: Right, because it was the same engine. Things just looked different
ArPharazonV: hmm... so Supreme Commander has different gameplay but similar graphics?
AuSteinM: Right, similar but different gameplay, but still robotic-looking graphics
Glorfindel VG has entered the room.
AuSteinM: Anyway, if anybody is interested in playing, let me know (requires a decent computer)
VardaValar1: Aiya Glorfindel!
Glorfindel VG: Hello : )
VardaValar1: How do they get with you, AuStein?
AuSteinM: This ScreenName is online all the time :-)
VardaValar1: so if you are gaming, you will notice an AIM call?
AuSteinM: I keep AIM running on not-my-gaming-machine
ArPharazonV: hmm... Pallando was a TA fan too, I recall, you might want to try to contact him
AuSteinM: Cool
VardaValar1: He comes late to meetings, as he works during the first part
VardaValar1: Arien, could you give the WoW Argent Dawn report?
AriehnV: Aye , that I can
AriehnV: The young druid Finduilaswen and the wizard Caradhron joined up in Stranglethorn vale to hunt some tigers, trolls and baskilsks
AriehnV: Of course there were some crocolisks , a nasty Elder one to mention as special, who tried to spoil the fun
AriehnV: but in vain, of course
VardaValar1: You wear his teeth?
AriehnV: Failivrin made me a nice cloak out of his leather
VardaValar1: hehe
AriehnV: her leatherwork is quite nicely coming along
AriehnV: a few minor problems at the troll ruins but after a while we succeeded in collecting all the ears
AriehnV: This endeth my report
VardaValar1: Thank you, Arien. Sounds like fun. : )
VardaValar1: Eonwe, could you give the WoW Lothar report?
ArPharazonV: I'm sorry, more happened on AD
VardaValar1: ah cool. Pardon Phar. Go ahead.
VardaValar1: Sauron just came in the door and says hi!
ArPharazonV: Menelvagor and I went into the Sunken Temple, with someone else who I assume was Valar but whose identity I never found out... could just be a friend of Menel, or Anarore as the character Menelvagor was using
ArPharazonV: I can't recall the other person's name, though
ArPharazonV: anyway, we cleaned the place out largely, first moving to the bottom room to activate the six statues, then going to the top level to kill 6 trolls holding up a magical shield, and ending with the demise of Hakkar himself
ArPharazonV: and basically that's it :-)
ArPharazonV: go on with Lothar!
Eonwe Valar: Thanks.
Eonwe Valar: WoW Lothar report:
Eonwe Valar: Unfortunately most of my WoW time was lost to trying to get the LotRO updated files transferred to Dracxil, but I did see Eowyn and Fangorn on playing low level characters in Wetlands.
Eonwe Valar: On the upside, earlier in the week, I managed to hit level 70 and get my Paladin epic mount quest done(first the mount then 70), and my computer is now sporting 3 GB of RAM (2 new GB + the 1GB that was already there).
VardaValar1: The two of them got hooked on playing their Draenei together. : P
Eonwe Valar: Had I thought about it earlier, I would've arranged for the epic mount quest to level me to 70 :}
VardaValar1: lol - and congrats!
Eonwe Valar: I then spent 100 or so gold to get my final skills, but I've pretty well already made that gold back.
ArPharazonV: yeah, once you're lvl 70 all the remaining quests give you a *lot* of gold
Eonwe Valar: That concludes my Lothar report.
VardaValar1: Arwen has a Lothar comment : )
Arwen V1: teehee! After finishing black morass, my priest Evenstarr got both her Karahzan attunement and her Mastery of Elixirs in Alchemy the other night
Bior the Ythling: grats :-)
VardaValar1: Congrats : )
excelsiorjss has entered the room.
Arwen V1: thanks :-)
excelsiorjss has left the room.
excelsiorjss has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Varda did show up for Lothar Friday also, handling the masses of cloth in the mail. And thank you all : )
VardaValar1: WoW Uldaman Wednesday was a pairing off of Elwing and Theodwyn
VardaValar1: Mostly chat, as Theodwyn is more dedicated to a single character whilst Elwing has 5 on Lothar and 6 on Uldaman : )
VardaValar1: Vlmo also came to the Uldaman gaming and much chat and gaming went on happily.
VardaValar1: LotRO:
VardaValar1: We say we have LotRO Monday, but it hasn't worked out that way
VardaValar1: It seems to be the least frequented time, that 5pm
VardaValar1: But all around that time, we have six and sometimes more on
VardaValar1: Pairings shift around and even large groupings for instances (called book and chapter)
AriehnV has left the room.
VardaValar1: Oh, we have a new member!
VardaValar1: From LotRO. My apologies for not mentioning earlier
AriehnV has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Irmo-(Valar) has been gaming in LotRO and tested his lady, who passed and games with us a great deal
VardaValar1: Her name is Miriel-(V) in the guild. : )
ArPharazonV: Miriel, eh...
VardaValar1: We have been teaming up with them a good bit - they like to use the Fellowship voice chat.
ArPharazonV: Elvish Miriel or Numenorean Miriel?
VardaValar1: Irmo is from the Netherlands with this wonderful accent, and Miriel is the same one as in the story Irmo has on our site. (Now you have to go look it up)
VardaValar1: Ok the one from Numenor : )
VardaValar1: The real life Miriel is from Texas. : )
VardaValar1: She moved to be with Irmo in the Netherlands. : )
VardaValar1: The pair are hoping for more of the Euro crowd to show up, as they are currently playing mostly with the insomniacs among us. ; )
AriehnV: once i get my computer organized i should do :-)
VardaValar1: They would love that. : )
VardaValar1: I would too
VardaValar1: You would still be in WoW as well?
AriehnV: of course ;-)
AriehnV: I am addictd somehow *grins*]
VardaValar1: You will have no life...
VardaValar1: I try to do both. One or the other tends to win out for our family members.
AriehnV: more than enought of it *drylie*
VardaValar1: Ariehn reports an odd problem with her connection
VardaValar1: Maybe someone here can help?
VardaValar1: Ariehn, can you describe the problem?
AriehnV: Well the thing is that our internal network , that bruce and i am using for gaming , has had some connection problems
AriehnV: it keeps disconnectiing at times
AriehnV: and we had one instance it took about twenty minute until it reconnected again
AriehnV: We are not sure what is behind this , really but maybe our neighbour has started using broadband as well
AriehnV: and it affects us somehow
AriehnV: any other ideas?
VardaValar1: Broadband is supposed to be broad enough to handle high traffic
VardaValar1: In our house we have 4 comps hooked up at once
Eonwe Valar: Does your router connect directly to your computers, or do you use wireless transmitters?
VardaValar1: No problem
Eonwe Valar: If the latter, you're probably getting some sort of interference.
AriehnV: mine is wireless and bruces who serves as server is directly connected
AriehnV: so he has the proper broadband connection and there is an internal network between our comps
VardaValar1: You might want to password your wireless so no one can piggyback on it.
AriehnV: i ll pass the hint on to Bruce
VardaValar1: If you have not done that, you could have a dozen people using yours for a free ride.
Bior the Ythling has left the room.
AriehnV: Bruce sais it is pasworded
VardaValar1: ok, one problem settled.
VardaValar1: Might check to see what could be causing interference.
AriehnV: /nods
AriehnV: /me nods

VardaValar1: Tolkien chat!
VardaValar1: Excelsior, would you like to give your topic now?
excelsiorjss: sure
excelsiorjss: drumroll please
VardaValar1: dum te dum dum
excelsiorjss: Barrow Wights: Anything and Everything about these scourges
VardaValar1: Wide open there. Thanks : )
AriehnV: They need to be puriefied .. :P
AriehnV: ((rotten spelling))
excelsiorjss: lol
VardaValar1: The Barrow-downs were the site of the burial mounds of the Edain
excelsiorjss: yes indeed
VardaValar1: The Dunedain of Cardolan took refuge in the Downs during the war with Angmar.
VardaValar1: Around TA 1636, wights from Angmar took up residence in the burial mounds.
VardaValar1: The Tyrn Gorthad, in Sindarin.
VardaValar1: So, how did we the readers first meet the Barrow-wights? : )
VardaValar1: Anything to do with...Hobbits?
ArPharazonV: When Frodo and the others got trapped in a barrow, I think
excelsiorjss: my first encounter with the Barrow-wights was in LotR: Fog on the Barrow-downs
excelsiorjss: when Frodo was taken
excelsiorjss: Cold be hand and heart and bone, and cold be sleep under stone: never mare to wake on stony bed, never, till the Sun fails and the Moon is dead.
excelsiorjss: "His knees gave, and he fell on the ground. Nothing happened, and there was no sound. Trembling he looked up, in time to see a tall dark figure like a shadow against the stars"
excelsiorjss: hmm...have you been claimed by the Barrow-wights?
VardaValar1: I try not to be
Eonwe Valar: My mere presence puts barrow wights in their place :}
excelsiorjss: heh
excelsiorjss: "The icy touch froze his bones, and he remembered no more"
VardaValar1: Varda's light makes them hard to spot. They melt away.
excelsiorjss: indeed
ArPharazonV: pch, I overthrew Sauron... I can take a couple of wights!
VardaValar1: That was a Pyrrhic victory you had. ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Obviously you didn't overthrow him well enough :}
excelsiorjss: indeed
VardaValar1: The LotRO players among you have certainly encountered the Barrow-wights. : )
excelsiorjss: ...makes me sad, I don't have it yet
VardaValar1: You may yet, Excelsior. You may yet. : )
excelsiorjss: I may indeed
VardaValar1: The wights collect the Hobbits, so we may extrapolate that this is something the wights are used to doing with travelers.
excelsiorjss: correct
Eonwe Valar: You don't get a bad reputation by sitting quietly in your barrow :}
VardaValar1: The hobbits are dressed in burial clothing with burial items, and Merry even wakes remembering other memories, the Men of Carn Dum came in the night, ahh, the spear in my heart.
VardaValar1: hehe
excelsiorjss: hmm
VardaValar1: A sword hangs over all their necks
VardaValar1: There's an arm crawling up
ArPharazonV: maybe they try to share their sorrow by replicating it onto travelers
VardaValar1: Frodo gets to do heroics and use a sword, so PJ can leave it out of the movies. ; )
excelsiorjss: lol
excelsiorjss: yeah...
VardaValar1: And Frodo calls up Tom, like a proper summoner. : )
excelsiorjss: indeed
excelsiorjss: well-done, Frodo
excelsiorjss: Ho! Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadillo!
excelsiorjss: good stuff :-)
VardaValar1: So if we adventurers are ever trying to rescue our buddies, and we haven't met Tom, are we just sunk? Can we do anything?
excelsiorjss: hmm
VardaValar1: Don't sleep against a cold standing stone in the Barrows at night.
excelsiorjss: indeed
excelsiorjss: good advice, indeed
VardaValar1: Somehow even following in single file, the hobbits on their ponies could no longer see each other.
excelsiorjss: the fog
VardaValar1: Don't let a wight grab your arm, as you go cold and get knocked out.
excelsiorjss: correct
excelsiorjss: cold be hand
excelsiorjss: :-)
VardaValar1: The wight says they are not to wake until the Dark Lord stretches out his hand. So they are being kept for later, not killed in the normal sense.
excelsiorjss: In the black wind the stars shall die, and still on gold here let them lie, till the dark lord lifts him hand over dead sea and withered land
VardaValar1: The arm, unattached to anything, was going after the sword as if to use it.
excelsiorjss: "He wondered if he pit on the Ring, whether the Barrow-wight would miss him, and he might find some way out"
VardaValar1: One wonders what would have happened if Frodo had not then cut off its hand..
VardaValar1: But he fought with the urge to use the Ring and leave his friends, and used his courage instead.
excelsiorjss: correct
excelsiorjss: "He wavered, groping in his pocket, and then fought with himself again; as he did so the arm crept nearer"
VardaValar1: There was some kind of light in the room that disappeared when the hand was cut.
excelsiorjss: "...and the hand broke off"
excelsiorjss: "In the dark there was a snarling noise"
VardaValar1: But it was snarling after the light went out. A snarling arm?
Glorfindel VG: Didn't Gandalf state at one point that that moment was probably the single most dangerous point of Frodo's entire journey
excelsiorjss: correct, after the light went
excelsiorjss: make way for the inn of the prancing pony
excelsiorjss: keep it secret, keep it safe
excelsiorjss: haha
VardaValar1: eheh
VardaValar1: Frodo's song started off small then was lively making the room seem to ring as if from drum and trumpet.
VardaValar1: He had power. Tom heard him.
VardaValar1: or Tom had power and heard him or both, since both sung.
VardaValar1: *sang
excelsiorjss: omg irregularity
excelsiorjss: sometimes I </3 the English language
Glorfindel VG: Cold be hand and heart and bone
VardaValar1: I liked the touch where Tom removes his hat when he enters the burial place. : )
Glorfindel VG: and cold be sleep under stone
excelsiorjss: good quote :-)
Glorfindel VG: did you find yourself a copy of the books n33d3rs
excelsiorjss: well
excelsiorjss: I got e-books
excelsiorjss: lol
VardaValar1: I read not this speak of leet.
Glorfindel VG: good good
VardaValar1: Resourceful
excelsiorjss: LotR, Sil, Hobbit, UT, and Bombadil
GilraenV has left the room.
excelsiorjss: yes, my hard copies are kinda 8 hours away in NC
Glorfindel VG: Do you suppose the Wights were expecting the hobbits?
VardaValar1: The hand was still moving around, and Tom stomped it.
Glorfindel VG: Due perhaps to some communications between the br
excelsiorjss: they had served as sentry for a rather long time, lol...I feel that they would notice if something had changed
VardaValar1: That's a good question. But if they were expecting the Hobbits, they needed to let Sauron know and turn over the Ring.
excelsiorjss: exactly
Glorfindel VG: Aye
VardaValar1: I got the feeling they were doing their normal duty, not realizing what they had.
VardaValar1: Sauron was waking and calling anything dark
VardaValar1: so he may have made the wights stronger and more active by his general call outwards.
excelsiorjss: their primary purpose was maintaining control over Tyrn Gorthad
excelsiorjss: I believe
excelsiorjss: hmm
excelsiorjss: correct
VardaValar1: Anything dark moving was bad news for the rest of the world, whether or not it recognized what the Dark Lord was doing, and at least accidentally serverd him.
VardaValar1: But these were servants of Angmar, and the
ArPharazonV: what would have happened with the Ring then if Frodo had not gotten out?
VardaValar1: Witch-king was the chief servant of Sauron.
Glorfindel VG: I don't think he would have turned the ring over
Glorfindel VG: The wraith would have kept it for himself i imagine
VardaValar1: Frodo could not be held down by the wight for long. They might have had to kill him for real.
excelsiorjss: one observation, was not the dagger obtained by Merry used in part to destroy the Witch-King of Angmar?
Glorfindel VG: yes?
excelsiorjss: just an observation
excelsiorjss: I was confirming it
excelsiorjss: lol
VardaValar1: Yes, it was a weapon of Westernesse
VardaValar1: All the hobbits used weapons from there, not from Strider : )
Glorfindel VG: hehe
excelsiorjss: :-)
ArPharazonV: and not from Galadiel ;-)
VardaValar1: That is great irony, Excelsior! I had not really noticed it before.
VardaValar1: Thank you!
VardaValar1: They got their daggers when Tom handed them from the trove.
VardaValar1: Tom wanted the trove broken up free to all finders birds beasts or men.
VardaValar1: This was to break the spell.
excelsiorjss: np :-)
Glorfindel VG: Do you see the barrow wight contesting sauron with the ring?
VardaValar1: He even took home a brooch for Goldberry
VardaValar1: That would be one toasted Barrow-wight. : )
Glorfindel VG: If he had gotten it i mean
VardaValar1: Reading the Letters was a real eye-opener about what would happen to anyone who got the Ring.
Glorfindel VG: Well, his power would have exceeded the witch king for one if he had the one ring, and that's no force to be reckoned with
VardaValar1: The wraiths would only pretend to serve the user, until they could get him/her and the Ring to Sauron.
excelsiorjss: but would he have harnessed that power?[
VardaValar1: Who he? :-)
excelsiorjss: lol he = it = a Barrow-wight in the context of Glorfindel's remark
VardaValar1: Thanks
excelsiorjss: np
excelsiorjss: :-)
Glorfindel VG: I imagine the barrow wights and the ring wraiths are on similar levels, with all rings are aside
VardaValar1: The barrow-wights may have been lesser Maia spirits, but how lesser I don't know.
excelsiorjss: hmm perhaps
VardaValar1: The ringwraiths were once Numenorean kings, humans.
excelsiorjss: correct
Glorfindel VG: so a wight with the one ring would overpower the ring wraiths and possibly sauron
VardaValar1: No
VardaValar1: A wight with the Ring would not overpower Sauron.
VardaValar1: The Ringwraiths maybe, but they would pretend in any case to serve the wearer in order to bring him to Sauron who would then deal with him.
VardaValar1: It would be most unpleasant.
Glorfindel VG: hehe
VardaValar1: The Ring includes a part of Sauron. If the poor guy brought Sauron together, he would be in serious trouble.
excelsiorjss: yes
Glorfindel VG: how about old jolly tom going up against the barrow wight with the ring of power
excelsiorjss: haha
Glorfindel VG: most unpleasent surprise for tom
excelsiorjss: he would'nt
VardaValar1: That involves discussing what Tom is and I hesitate to go into that again : )
Glorfindel VG: haha : )
ArPharazonV: I'm not sure, the Ring held no power over him, and neither did the wight
ArPharazonV: so would them combined do the trick?
Glorfindel VG: tom would overcome all in his domain
Glorfindel VG: as i see it
VardaValar1: The Ring was just a piece of jewelry to Tom, made no difference to him. He had it already once.
excelsiorjss: correct
VardaValar1: The Ring had no power over Tom, but neither was Tom controlling the Ring.
excelsiorjss: that is true
Glorfindel VG: That could almost indicate that he himself is greater than sauron
AriehnV: which opens up the question who tom was ;-)
excelsiorjss: omg that questiong
VardaValar1: Now Arien!
excelsiorjss: question
Glorfindel VG: lol
VardaValar1: Shall we start into Balrog wings next? ;-)
Glorfindel VG: hhaha
excelsiorjss: hehe
AriehnV: hehe , well what i mean is why the ring had no power over him
ArPharazonV: how about Orcish origins? always makes for a good discussion...
VardaValar1: I already wrote a paper on that, refer to it. ;-)
excelsiorjss: lol
AriehnV: so who has he to be to have no effect ?
excelsiorjss: what, Orcish origins?
VardaValar1: yes, Orcish origins.
excelsiorjss: equal
VardaValar1: and gear too. ; )
excelsiorjss: lol
VardaValar1: Aye, he has to be at least equal
excelsiorjss: indeed
VardaValar1: to part of Sauron.
excelsiorjss: equal to the power of the ring
VardaValar1: Pretty much the same thing. : )
Glorfindel VG: Personally I would have liked to see old saruman get the ring
VardaValar1: oboy
excelsiorjss: into which Sauron poured his malice
VardaValar1: malice vs joy
excelsiorjss: haha good call Glorfindel
VardaValar1: Saruman would agree with you.
Glorfindel VG: :-)
Glorfindel VG: can't help but feel sorry for him at times
VardaValar1: Saruman had a real problem, since he was an Istar.
Glorfindel VG: but not really of course :-)
AriehnV: mo chreach that would Valtharitomodaxx in Undercity look like a dwarf
VardaValar1: His memory and part of his power was kept back from him, and he had the body of an old man.
AriehnV: or what his name is .. the guy who gives the book quests in RFC
AriehnV: sorry '-)
VardaValar1: np : )
VardaValar1: I liked his wings. ; )
VardaValar1: and how he flutters up.
excelsiorjss: lol
VardaValar1: But Saruman could not reach his own full power, same problem all the Istar had.
VardaValar1: And if he came near Sauron, once again there is the problem that he is bringing Sauron together.
AriehnV: /me bows into the round and waves goodbye
VardaValar1: Sauron whole is greater than Saruman Istarified.
VardaValar1: Leaving, Sunshine?
AriehnV: i have to steer my boat out of the east , slowly but surely
excelsiorjss: lol
VardaValar1: Night comes, the stars will soon be out.
excelsiorjss: indeed
AriehnV: I can remember chasing Tsilpion out of the inn
VardaValar1: Lost me there. Refresh please?
ArPharazonV: Namarie, Arien!
excelsiorjss: don't sleep against any cold standing stones in the Barrows
AriehnV: the other party goers had to rioll him into the moon
excelsiorjss: Namarie
VardaValar1: ahhh
VardaValar1: lol
VardaValar1: Namarie!
AriehnV: Namari ;-)
ArPharazonV: and the cow jumped over the moon :-)
AriehnV: Namarie :-)
AriehnV has left the room.
VardaValar1: I have a sudden urge to play LotRO and kill Barrow-wights. ;-)
excelsiorjss: lol
excelsiorjss: killing them, eh
excelsiorjss: sounds fun
VardaValar1: So to speak.
Glorfindel VG: hehe
excelsiorjss: heh
excelsiorjss: damn you, Barrow-wights
Glorfindel VG: You should play final fantasy
excelsiorjss: which one
VardaValar1: I've seen a few of those : )
Glorfindel VG: ive only plaid 1-6
Glorfindel VG: but i love them
VardaValar1: Only : )
Glorfindel VG: Not to mention you can see the Tolkien influence in many of them
VardaValar1: And your reviews are going to Eonwe just any time!
VardaValar1: with special mention of Tolkien elements. ; )
Glorfindel VG: I'd love to
excelsiorjss: I didnt play FF beyond SNES
VardaValar1: Poor Glorfindel. Always gets handed a hard time. Left out of two movies already.
VardaValar1: I would enjoy reading them. : )
excelsiorjss: yeah, that was kind of saddening
ArPharazonV: 2 movies?
Glorfindel VG: Aye, poor Bombadil as well
VardaValar1: In the Bakshi animated movie, Glorfindel was replaced by Legolas. In PJ's live movie, by Arwen.
excelsiorjss: lol
Glorfindel VG: And It's no surprise that Old Man Willow is as bitter and hostile as he is from being left out of the scene time and time again
VardaValar1: I thought Legolas made more sense than Arwen, at least.
ArPharazonV: oh, the Bakshi movie
excelsiorjss: yes
VardaValar1: Aye, poor Old Man Willow : )
excelsiorjss: haha
VardaValar1: But Old Man Willow may mellow out since he was included in LotRO : )
VardaValar1: I saw Glorfindel in Rivendell, as a quest giver. :-)
Glorfindel VG: There is quite a list of characters to whom the movie doesn't do any justice
VardaValar1: Not possible to include them all in something as short as a movie.
excelsiorjss: indeed
VardaValar1: The trick is how would we have handled those constraints?
VardaValar1: Some ways PJ did really well, some ways he missed it, like leaving out the Scouring and thus fracturing the ending.
excelsiorjss: yeah
Glorfindel VG: Aye, definately
VardaValar1: And leaving out what happened to two Fellowship members: Gimli and Legolas. He even had it filmed partly and cut them both.
Glorfindel VG: And at times he seemed to emphasize parts that were somewhat insignificant too and way overdramatized
VardaValar1: Not even added to the Extended.
VardaValar1: Helm's Deep? ;-)
Glorfindel VG: haha
VardaValar1: That was a crowd pleaser, but I would have liked it to follow our characters more closely than it did.
Glorfindel VG: And how about seeing the WK break Gandalf's staff and knock him off SF, then 5 mins later Gandalf is back with the staff
Glorfindel VG: etc
VardaValar1: lol
Glorfindel VG: whats with that lol
VardaValar1: Gandalf's staff could in no wise have been broken by the Witch-king. Completely insane.
Glorfindel VG: seriously!
VardaValar1: It was cut out of the main movie, shown for the Extended.
Glorfindel VG: Terrible injustice to Gandalf
VardaValar1: Aye, Glorfindel!
excelsiorjss: lol
VardaValar1: Ok, I'm gone. : )
Glorfindel VG: Not to mention pippin saving gandalfs life from AN ORC
VardaValar1: It was a fun discussion
VardaValar1: hehe
Glorfindel VG: Aye : )
ArPharazonV: Namarie :-)
VardaValar1: No Troll chieftain.
Glorfindel VG: :-)
VardaValar1: This place is like glue when the convo is still going. ;-)
excelsiorjss: Namarie
excelsiorjss: yeah
VardaValar1 has left the room.
excelsiorjss has left the room.
Glorfindel VG: See everyone next week
Glorfindel VG: Good night
Glorfindel VG has left the room.

After-meeting:
DreamlordTV has entered the room.
DreamlordTV: Greetings
Eonwe Valar: Heya DEreamlord!
Eonwe Valar: Dreamlord even
Eonwe Valar: Long time no see.
DreamlordTV: Ah, good to see you
DreamlordTV: Guess the meeting is over
Eonwe Valar: Aye, meeting is over.
DreamlordTV: I spent some time trying to make it in here, never used AIM before
DreamlordTV: Anyway, how are you?
Eonwe Valar: I'm doing well. Trying to work on schoolwork and keep an eye on the meeting :}
Eonwe Valar: How about you? Heard some things have been going your way :}
DreamlordTV: A couple yes. I'm good, also busy working against a deadline! MA thesis due in a few weeks.
Eonwe Valar: Always with these deadlines :}
DreamlordTV: Before going to Madison, WI in August. What's your schoolwork about again?
Eonwe Valar: What's the topic?
Eonwe Valar: Programming.
Eonwe Valar: Game programming to be more specific.
DreamlordTV: civil war rhetoric, I'm working on Lincoln and his contemporaries
DreamlordTV: at the moment
Eonwe Valar: Ah, that sounds interesting.
DreamlordTV: Will you be turning out some high-profile games soon then? Go work for one of the big software companies?
Eonwe Valar: I don't know. I probably won't start at a game company at least.
DreamlordTV: Where is Varda keeping herself tonight?
Eonwe Valar: You missed her by a couple of minutes. She's probably gone off to Lord of the Rings Online.
DreamlordTV: Hehe... well, hard to compete with that :-)
Eonwe Valar: :}
ArPharazonV: allright, looks like meeting's over.... I'll save and send
ArPharazonV: but first, an old link I came across again today...
Eonwe Valar: Seems a chunk of us have gone over there.
ArPharazonV: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/hobbits
Eonwe Valar: That looks familiar. I assume that's the "quest" one?
DreamlordTV: Have you got your copy of the Children of Hurin yet?
Eonwe Valar: Of course I have :}
ArPharazonV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tin6NJqQQsM if you prefer youtube
DreamlordTV: attaboy
ArPharazonV: no, they're taking the hobbits to isengard :-)
DreamlordTV: I'm not quite there yet myself..
Eonwe Valar: Thanks to Borders deals, I got mine for almost half price.
DreamlordTV: Eonwe, do I know the Golden King here?
ArPharazonV: hm? what?
Eonwe Valar: Probably not. The last Pharazon you might've met was too true to his namesake.
Eonwe Valar: This Pharazon is a worthy Valar Guild member :}
ArPharazonV: I've done my best to give the name a good reputation again :-)
DreamlordTV: Ah I see. Pleased to meet you
Eonwe Valar: He's been around for, what 5years now Phar?
ArPharazonV: 5? no, don't think so...
ArPharazonV: 3.5, perhaps
Eonwe Valar: er, 5 might be much. 3 maybe.
ArPharazonV: or 2.5
DreamlordTV: Long may you reign, anyway...
Eonwe Valar: Afraid you missed Manwë's brief return and final departure as well.
DreamlordTV: Ah, that's a pity. How brief was it?
Eonwe Valar: A couple of weeks.
DreamlordTV: So you got a chance to chat, play, etc? How was he?
ArPharazonV: hm.. seems I joined october 2003, that makes 3 and a half years...
ArPharazonV: anyway, I'll be saving transcript
Eonwe Valar: Well, maybe a bit longer. He came in a couple of months ago to a meeting, then came in a few weeks ago and I found out it was him because Varda knew his AIM name :}
DreamlordTV: He wasn't here as Manwe?
Eonwe Valar: Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to play with him. he did join in on LotRO for a bit, decided he wasn't into MMOs.
Eonwe Valar: He used the name Russ(somenumberhere)
ArPharazonV: pleased to meet you, Dreamlord, you seem familiar, but I guess that's just my mistake... saving, sending, and saying goodbye!
Eonwe Valar: replacing the parantheis with a number, of course.
Eonwe Valar: Drealmord is our first Irmo :}
DreamlordTV: Ok.. sorry to have missed him.
ArPharazonV: Russ82275?
Eonwe Valar: Dreamlord even, bah.
ArPharazonV: ah, ok
DreamlordTV: Farewell, Pharazon
Eonwe Valar: That sounds about right, Phar.
DreamlordTV: Take care
ArPharazonV: he's still in my buddylist for Valar, so :-)
ArPharazonV: allright
Eonwe Valar: He didn't seem very pleased about his last Tolkien chat, to be honest.
Eonwe Valar: You can see his departure message on the Forum.
DreamlordTV: How's that?
DreamlordTV (7:01:11 PM): Ah, I'll check it out. Hope there's no resentment  [Times in CDT, add one hour for EDT]
DreamlordTV (7:01:21 PM): on anyone's part
Eonwe Valar (7:01:48 PM): He says he doesn't have any, no reason to doubt that, and no one I know of has any.
DreamlordTV (7:02:00 PM): I read his msg on the forum, a year or so ago.
Eonwe Valar (7:02:04 PM): I certainly hoild no resentment. He'll be missed.
DreamlordTV (7:02:19 PM): Made me reminisce
Eonwe Valar (7:02:49 PM): We were reminiscing with him a couple of weeks ago :}
DreamlordTV (7:02:55 PM): How do you feel about that tolkien chat?
Eonwe Valar (7:02:57 PM): After the meeting had died down.
DreamlordTV (7:03:23 PM): Few left from the manwe era, unfortunately.
DreamlordTV (7:03:52 PM): Guess he didn't find things quite as he remembered them
Eonwe Valar (7:03:52 PM): Well, his position was that the Valar sought control, and I disagreed, using the Silmarillion to back up my position.
Eonwe Valar (7:04:24 PM): Meeting transcripts are kept as links from the News page now, so you can read them if you like.
DreamlordTV (7:04:26 PM): Seems like the place to go for support
DreamlordTV (7:04:42 PM): Sure, thanks.
DreamlordTV (7:05:18 PM): Looks like ol Ulmo got dropped as well?
Eonwe Valar (7:05:24 PM): The topic started on Tom Bombadil.
(7:05:41 PM) Xseanzee disco has left the room.
DreamlordTV (7:05:48 PM): Ah Tom.... go on.
Eonwe Valar (7:06:21 PM): It was the nature of Tom Bombadil :}
Eonwe Valar (7:07:18 PM): Ulmo hasn't been dropped so far as I recall, but Varda and I have been the most visible Valar for a while.
ArPharazonV (7:07:58 PM): allright, saved and sent, I'll be logging, if you want to save this bit of the conversation too, Eonwe, it's up to you :-)
Eonwe Valar (7:07:59 PM): Several of the Valar are on LotRO now though: Melkor, Orom,..
ArPharazonV (7:08:08 PM): Namarie!
Eonwe Valar (7:08:10 PM): Ok Phar :} Thanks and take care :}
DreamlordTV (7:08:18 PM): Yes, it's gone much like it did in Middle earth, the Valar are distant powers...
DreamlordTV (7:08:29 PM): Memories
ArPharazonV (7:08:33 PM): oh, and I do intend to go back to the forum rp, but I'm not sure when.. I'd almost completely forgotten about it :-)
ArPharazonV (7:08:39 PM): *waves*
Eonwe Valar (7:08:44 PM): heh, thanks for the update Phar :}
DreamlordTV (7:08:45 PM): Cheers
(7:08:48 PM) ArPharazonV has left the room.
Eonwe Valar (7:08:50 PM): Take care :}
Eonwe Valar (7:10:45 PM): Varda and I at least have not faded into the background :}
Eonwe Valar (7:11:14 PM): Manw did recruit a new member before he left, and Varda's been drawing in members from LotRO quite well.
DreamlordTV (7:12:11 PM): I like the idea of Manwe bringing in one final recruit
DreamlordTV (7:12:28 PM): He was the big recruiter back in the day, seems fitting
Eonwe Valar (7:12:53 PM): Aye.
Eonwe Valar (7:13:21 PM): Now Varda is the big recruiter :}
DreamlordTV (7:13:23 PM): I suppose the next anniversary will be the big 10
Eonwe Valar (7:13:27 PM): Aye.
DreamlordTV (7:13:29 PM): Of course
DreamlordTV (7:13:44 PM): Varda's the big you name it
DreamlordTV (7:14:00 PM): :-)
Eonwe Valar (7:14:09 PM): Aye. I'm certainly glad she's still around :}
DreamlordTV (7:14:16 PM): She recruited me, as I recall
DreamlordTV (7:14:28 PM): Or participated at least
DreamlordTV (7:14:40 PM): March 12 1998, I believe
Eonwe Valar (7:15:07 PM): So you've been here for 9 years :}
DreamlordTV (7:15:13 PM): Varda had joined in December, and was already very active on every level
DreamlordTV (7:15:46 PM): I remember the date because it was like the day before old Aule's birthday
Eonwe Valar (7:16:35 PM): I assume the Aul back then is the same Aul I know :}
DreamlordTV (7:16:37 PM): We never needed a bot back then, of course, Aule would be there around the clock
Eonwe Valar (7:16:47 PM): Same Aul :}
DreamlordTV (7:16:49 PM): 24/7
DreamlordTV (7:16:52 PM): lol
DreamlordTV (7:17:16 PM): Yes... such dedication.
Eonwe Valar (7:17:19 PM): I remember those days too. He was still at it when I joined Nov 6 of 99 :}
DreamlordTV (7:17:40 PM): Yes indeed.. didn't I recruit you?
DreamlordTV (7:18:24 PM): Fall of 99 was a good period
Eonwe Valar (7:18:34 PM): Well, Aul was the first person I ran into in the channel as I recall.
DreamlordTV (7:18:45 PM): Inevitably
Eonwe Valar (7:18:52 PM): You were involved in the test.
Eonwe Valar (7:19:18 PM): I remember thinking you guys had to be awefully sure of yourselves to be taking the name of Valar :}
Eonwe Valar (7:19:24 PM): *names
DreamlordTV (7:19:36 PM): Yes... hubris the lot of us
Eonwe Valar (7:19:41 PM): :}
Eonwe Valar (7:19:59 PM): I remember questioning Aul, but unfortunately do not remember what all I asked him.
DreamlordTV (7:20:16 PM): You were a great addition. I remember pushing for your promotion to maia not long after you joined
DreamlordTV (7:21:20 PM): There was a lot of division of labor back then, lot of work for promotees to take on.
Eonwe Valar (7:21:46 PM): Still alot of work, just hard to find volunteers.
DreamlordTV (7:21:57 PM): Do you remember what your duties as maia were?
Eonwe Valar (7:23:19 PM): Well, as far as I recall, I had no official duties other than testing /recruiting potential members. I did try to exemplify what we stood for.
DreamlordTV (7:23:22 PM): I remember when I became maia, we would get attached to one of the valar helping out with whatever part of the operation he or she was involved in
DreamlordTV (7:23:55 PM): I was a maia of old Tulkas, the linguist... not the sailor.
Eonwe Valar (7:24:20 PM): Aye, the one who became Beren.
DreamlordTV (7:24:24 PM): We would do tolkien chats mostly
DreamlordTV (7:24:30 PM): exactly
DreamlordTV (7:25:54 PM): Well, just a lot of old stuff. :-)
Eonwe Valar (7:25:56 PM): It's a shame those Sat chats didn't last very long.
DreamlordTV (7:26:16 PM): They lasted quite a while
Eonwe Valar (7:26:27 PM): Oh really?
DreamlordTV (7:26:31 PM): I started them back in 98 or 99 probably
DreamlordTV (7:26:45 PM): and had them for... a couple of years I guess. Till things changed.
Eonwe Valar (7:27:04 PM): I don't remember them from when I joined. May have just been I couldn't make them.
DreamlordTV (7:28:05 PM): I couldn't say whether we still did them when you joined.. do you remember yavanna?
Eonwe Valar (7:28:10 PM): I recall us trying to revive them at some point.
Eonwe Valar (7:28:19 PM): No, she was before my time.
DreamlordTV (7:28:51 PM): Really? hmm... trying to make the puzzle fit, but it's all a bit dim now
Eonwe Valar (7:28:55 PM): I think she's the only Vala I hadn't met.
DreamlordTV (7:29:33 PM): Probably. Apart from the early ones known only to very few. There was an Irmo before me you know.
Eonwe Valar (7:29:45 PM): Ok, hadn't met him.
DreamlordTV (7:30:14 PM): Yavanna created quite a stir while she was there...
Eonwe Valar (7:30:18 PM): Primarily I mean if the , I guess it would be the Third Theme?
Eonwe Valar (7:30:27 PM): *mean if = mean of
DreamlordTV (7:30:49 PM): Pardon?
DreamlordTV (7:31:59 PM): Well, I've better let you get on with that programming job.
Eonwe Valar (7:32:01 PM): Pardon, apparently using terms only used in Histories, and I can't even find the Valar Guild histories..
Eonwe Valar (7:33:15 PM): What I mean is the most recent iteration of the Valar Guild.
DreamlordTV (7:33:30 PM): I think I missed a beat somewhere between the last few phrases
Eonwe Valar (7:34:31 PM): I commented that Yavanna was probably the only Vala I hadn't met, you said probably except for the early ones, I said I was referring to the most recent iteration of the Guild.
DreamlordTV (7:35:24 PM): Right, I see. You're right, Eru talked of the early history in terms of Themes of the Vision being set forth
DreamlordTV (7:35:30 PM): Very Ainulindale
Eonwe Valar (7:36:13 PM): Aye
DreamlordTV (7:36:43 PM): Irmo of the 1st theme I met only on one occasion, he joined the channel randomly one evening and everything hushed, Eru instantly chilled, and I got the impression he was history
DreamlordTV (7:36:51 PM): and not welcome
DreamlordTV (7:37:50 PM): What the story was, I'm not sure but it became necessary, according to Eru, to make a clean sweep of the old guild, a kind of old testament flood, and he kept only a select few
DreamlordTV (7:38:05 PM): of the original members on which to found his new vision
DreamlordTV (7:38:12 PM): such as Manwe
DreamlordTV (7:39:41 PM): Anyway...
Eonwe Valar (7:39:57 PM): I believe his history says the guild ended up being full of people who had no inkling of Tolkien, and I think some unsavory types.
Eonwe Valar (7:40:10 PM): But for the life of me, I can't find the Histories. Oh well.
Eonwe Valar (7:40:45 PM): I find history intreesting ,s oof course I had to read about the Guild's history :}
(7:41:18 PM) mordacil has entered the room.
(7:41:21 PM) Aerandir V has entered the room.
DreamlordTV (7:41:36 PM): We felt the urge, at one time, to chronicle those early days, as a way to retain some of the original impetus behind creating the guild
Eonwe Valar (7:41:37 PM): heya Aerandir
Eonwe Valar (7:42:18 PM): Aye, it was a good idea. I used to encourage potential recruits to check them out.
DreamlordTV (7:42:23 PM): I think Eru's motive was to set down the vision in writing, to use it as a means of defining what the guild was, had been and ought to remain.
DreamlordTV (7:42:43 PM): And also as a kind of celebration of having made it that far
DreamlordTV (7:43:02 PM): Me too
Eonwe Valar (7:44:43 PM): I've started to set down one several times in the last few years. I've just never settled on the style in which I want to present it.
DreamlordTV (7:45:32 PM): What are your thoughts on that? topical vs straight-forward narration?
Eonwe Valar (7:46:04 PM): Probably narration from a first person perspective.
Eonwe Valar (7:46:11 PM): Obviously my perspective.
(7:46:55 PM) Aerandir V has left the room.
(7:46:57 PM) mordacil has left the room.
Eonwe Valar (7:46:59 PM): The Valar Guild has seen alot in the years I've been here.
DreamlordTV (7:47:14 PM): You should do that. It's only gonna get harder, longer :-) Anyway, I must be off. Good seeing you again, mellon
Eonwe Valar (7:47:25 PM): It was good to see you as well.
DreamlordTV (7:47:37 PM): It's been nice reliving a few of the old valar moments
Eonwe Valar (7:47:57 PM): Aye. Don't be a stranger :} Drop in more often if you get the chance :}
DreamlordTV (7:48:12 PM): Sorry I missed Varda. I'll try again sometime!
Eonwe Valar (7:48:29 PM): I'm sure she'd love that :}
Eonwe Valar (7:48:32 PM): I'll let her know you stopped by :}
DreamlordTV (7:48:45 PM): Thanks! Namarie for now!
Eonwe Valar (7:48:50 PM): Namari :}
(7:49:23 PM) DreamlordTV has left the room.
Eonwe Valar (7:55:16 PM): I think I'll call it here as well.
Eonwe Valar (7:55:27 PM): Take care all, good night, sleep well, and have fun.
