Membership:
VardaValar1: If you are agile enough, feel free to pat yourselves on the back for having helped the guild through yet another fine year!
VardaValar1: If you are not, the nearest person can pat your back for you.
VardaValar1: Today's business is all supposed to be related to the 9th Anniversary, as our theme.
VardaValar1: Is there any further Membership news?
ArPharazonV: well, it's a bit of member news, that I found Varda's house this afternoon ;-)
VardaValar1: Please remember that all of you are the representatives of our philosophy, and our scouts for finding the like-minded.
VardaValar1: lol - yes you did!
VardaValar1: And showed me your lovely home as well, not far from a magnificent lake!
ArPharazonV: indeed!
VardaValar1: Google Earth
VardaValar1: We exchanged pictures on AIM, went very quickly. : )
ArPharazonV: a software, freely downloaded from the internet, which allows you to zoom in on the world up to street level
ArPharazonV: using satellite pictures etc
VardaValar1: Thank you to Orodreth for once again proposing the extension of the Chat project, so that not only Anniversary day saw the chat open 24 hours, but all week!
VardaValar1: Thank you to the many faithful who came and held it open, as some of us would crash, but others took up the torch.
ArPharazonV: did it work?
VardaValar1: We may have dropped it a time or two, hard to tell, but it seemed to be up very nearly the whole week,
VardaValar1: perhaps a few minutes downtime?
VardaValar1: Any of you who helped hold it on Anniversary day and during the week, feel free to say Aye if still present. : )
VardaValar1: Aye
Eonwe Valar: Everytime I came in, at least 4 other people were here, so I'd say we had it up a very good chunk of the time.
STEvilaim: I tried to be in, but dunno how much I was.. :p
VardaValar1: Finrod, you have been holding it for nearly forever, as Th0r0ngil.

VardaValar1: Web News:
VardaValar1: For a 9th Anniversary Project, and in hope of the upcoming Hobbit movie,
VardaValar1: we've started on the Tolkien Encyc project: Thorin's Company
VardaValar1: Each member of the company now has a page in the Encyclopedia,
VardaValar1: even if incomplete.
VardaValar1: This shows their individuality, as the dwarves tend to blur if one is not careful.
VardaValar1: Lungorthin, praise to his name, has added
VardaValar1: 5 new books concerning Tolkien
VardaValar1: to the Book List and Review page, along with comments.
VardaValar1: He also added the word (New) so you could tell the latest goodies.
VardaValar1: If you would like to add to any of these projects at any time, our email is always open.
VardaValar1: Is there any other Web News?
top

VardaValar1: Gaming News:
VardaValar1: For the anniversary,
VardaValar1: three of us started new characters on WoW Uldaman, so we could be certain to quest together.
VardaValar1: Gilraen, Sauron, and myself.
VardaValar1: I also dropped into Battle.net for some d
VardaValar1: Diablo 2 Expansion
VardaValar1: Does anyone else have any Anniversary Gaming to report?
FinduilasV: a little bit or does that fall into europe?
VardaValar1: Anniversary gaming was for this whole week.
Eonwe Valar: I popped into the Valar Channel for a few minutes Aniversary night.
Orodreth V: Oh, I was in here for most of wednesday and all of mon-tues.
Eonwe Valar: Valar Channel on bnet.
VardaValar1: All gaming that is Valar
Orodreth V: And I threw some snowballs around in eve
VardaValar1: Valar channel is for all members everywhere in Battlenet and is held in East, as all can meet there.
ArPharazonV: wasn't home on anniversary night, was styledancing, my partner's ankles are finally recovered again :-)
Eonwe Valar: We shot fireworks during Guild questing and Shouted "Happy Ninth Annniversary, Valar Guild!" at the various Alliance capitals for all to see and hear.
VardaValar1: WoW conveniently had Harvest Festival and sold many interesting fireworks for a few coppers. ; )
FinduilasV: sonds fun L)i started a new character on the european server Lightbringer
Orodreth V: Eve's been quite though. We've been cleaning up this area, shoving out darkness...and doing a pretty fine job..
FinduilasV: She has finished her class quest at twelcve after some bad connection pingpong yhesterday
ArPharazonV: what class, what name? and what faction? I'll provide you with an alt for the charter, if it works... although I might not have a lot of time to play him/her much
FinduilasV: Finduilas V, Alliance , paladin
ArPharazonV: ok
FinduilasV: she met a warrior named Dernhelm
FinduilasV: so we quested a bit together
FinduilasV: a bit of scouting ..
FinduilasV: we see what comes of it , finito L)
Eonwe Valar: Paladins are pretty fun imo, so I hope you have fun with them too :}
ArPharazonV: I got one of my alts doing his classquest today too, the warrior
FinduilasV: hope so too\
ArPharazonV: darn class doesn't survive very well on his own ;-)
ArPharazonV: luckily I just got him engineering, so he can use explosives too!
FinduilasV: oh ye can ask Laswen for assistance at any time
ArPharazonV: I'll keep that in mind :-)
FinduilasV: she might help if ia 13 mage is of use L)
VardaValar1: So this is your Anniversary gift, a new server for Europe? : )
FinduilasV: *nods*
ArPharazonV: then my Anniversary gift will be a picture of your house on request! ;-)
ArPharazonV: you want a picture, let me know, and we'll see if we can locate it with Google Earth!
Eonwe Valar: Oh, we also continued with the Razelik chain for Anniversary Questing.
Menelvagor Valar has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: And we do have an Anniversary thread under the Guild Announcements board on the Forum.
Menelvagor Valar: Aiya
ArPharazonV: Aiya Menel!
FinduilasV: aoha :-)
Glorfindel VG has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: It's been there since Midnight the morning of the Anniversary :}
FinduilasV: Aiya , any new arrivals :-)
Eonwe Valar: Now back to our Anniversary-related Anniversary Meeting :}
Eonwe Valar: Oh, and Happy Ninth Anniversary! :}
Menelvagor Valar: Sorry, I got a bit too drunk last night, and the hangover has sapped almost all my energy today, so I am going to be a "bit" afk-ish :P
VardaValar1: Did the WC3 Anniversary gamers manage to get going?
Glorfindel VG: Aiya!
Menelvagor Valar: unfortunately my WC3 installation was broken, so I had to get hold of my original cd again.
Menelvagor Valar: didn't get it re-installed till thursday.
VardaValar1: It's still a good idea if you folks want to try to set up a time again
FinduilasV: i will get a copy next week i hope
FinduilasV: its ordered in the shop
Eonwe Valar: It took me 5 hours to get the update installe,d so even if my homework hadn't stopped me, the update for WC3 did.
Menelvagor Valar: the update was done for me soon enough, then again, I don't have TFT any longer.
VardaValar1: For those of you who are considered "mature" and who are WoW fans, you might enjoy a link to the South Park WoW show.
Menelvagor Valar: that cd broke way before my installation did.
VardaValar1: http://www.dailymotion.com/SolTek/video/x gv4c_south-park-wow
FinduilasV: and .. , straying aside a bit, if all goes well we are back on Broadband next sat :-)
VardaValar1: Hope you make it, Fin!
FinduilasV: with BT ye never know :
VardaValar1: So we had snowballs, fireworks, new characters, and installations, plus a week-long chat room. : )
VardaValar1: and a new Tolkien Encyc project.
VardaValar1: Congratulations once again to you all.
VardaValar1: We came together originally to make a haven for the online gamers who liked courteous, honorable play,
FinduilasV: /me smiles
FinduilasV: /me cheers
VardaValar1: actually playing games rather than just murdering, stealing, hacking, and Orcish speech with less originality,
VardaValar1: with folk who were literate and shared a taste for LotR.
VardaValar1: This vision helps us bring together folk who should be natural friends, and it seems to have worked pretty well.
VardaValar1: I consider all of you to be my friends, and hope you feel the same.
FinduilasV: /me nods
FinduilasV: /me smiles
ArPharazonV: I must agree indeed!
VardaValar1: It is for this friendship that many of us continue to do things for the guild that could have been too tiresome to continue for just any group.
Star of Phaet: Aye, Varda. Very nicely said :-)
VardaValar1: You are all immensely worth everyone's effort. : )
FinduilasV: indeed :-)
VardaValar1: Many groups would have broken up by now with infighting.
FinduilasV: /me blushes
VardaValar1: We just don't have that problem.
VardaValar1: A little disagreement here and there over procedure, but always with the good of the group in mind.
ArPharazonV: we're good people... let's keep it that way :-)
VardaValar1: I salute you all and thank you for the input over all this long time, of so many kinds.
FinduilasV: oh Varda , we are all human and no robots :-)
VardaValar1: It is easy to forget that we have so many types of members, as we tend just to see a small circle that we meet.
FinduilasV: my thanks too
VardaValar1: A few WarForged D&D folk maybe... ;-)
VardaValar1: But we have been blessed with input of all types, and AIM is allowing more of these different types to come together from all over the world.
VardaValar1: We have made all sorts of progress, moved into many things.
VardaValar1: And yes, we are still aimed at LotRO and have beta folk in it, and more invitations should be going out this month.
VardaValar1: Would anyone else like to say a few words for the Anniversary?
VardaValar1: Eonwe, I bowled them all over with verbiage.
Eonwe Valar: :}
VardaValar1: Eonwe has been the strong right arm of the Valar through a great deal. A special thanks to him!
ArPharazonV: I like to toast to all the Guild and the values they represent!
Eonwe Valar: Let's make this 10th year a year of Prosperity :}
VardaValar1: Hear hear!
ArPharazonV: let geographical distance never become an obstacle for us :-)
VardaValar1: Aye!
ArPharazonV: let ideological differences never tear us apart
Eonwe Valar: Let gaming companies reunite the hemispheres :}
VardaValar1: And since we're a Tolkien group, I'm ging to give you a minute to scamper off and grab whatever Tolkien books you have for some open book trivia!
VardaValar1: Take off!
ArPharazonV: let the Valar Guild live forever!
ArPharazonV: now let's get some books..
VardaValar1: As long as two can gather together, we can have it. : )
VardaValar1: It has a structure most all of you know and can carry on should I and other Valar get hit by a truck. : )
ArPharazonV: it would only serve to strengthen our determination for survival in your memory ;-)
VardaValar1: One would hope. : )
VardaValar1: Any excuse will do. : )

VardaValar1: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: The plan is that a question will be asked by one person, then
VardaValar1: whoever types the answer first (correctly but spelling merely has to be recognizable)
VardaValar1: will ask the next.
VardaValar1: If you ask two questions, you can choose another member at random to ask the next one.
VardaValar1: If he's afk, you get to choose another including yourself.
VardaValar1: This includes ANY Tolkien book or story.
VardaValar1: I intend to be stumped by you guys at least once!
VardaValar1: Ok, whoever is here, please say Aye
FinduilasV: aye
STEvilaim: aye
VardaValar1: aye
Eonwe Valar: Aye
ArPharazonV: Aiya
ArPharazonV: darnit!
ArPharazonV: *aye
VardaValar1: or Aiya ;-)
FinduilasV: /me chuckles
VardaValar1: Name one book or story that is not H, LotR, or in HoMe.
FinduilasV: Farmer Giles of Ham
Eonwe Valar: Leaf by Niggle
VardaValar1: Feel free to answer even if you're not first. : )
ArPharazonV: The Adventures of Tom Bombadil!
VardaValar1: All good answers. Fin, you have the next question!
FinduilasV: What was the rumours thast the Quendi first hird about Orome?
FinduilasV: err heard
VardaValar1: He was the evil rider who would harm them.
FinduilasV: additions? but yes thats it
FinduilasV: something out of the shadow ...
Eonwe Valar: As I recall, it was Morgoth posing as Oromë snatching up stragglers among the Elves who gave them that fear.
FinduilasV: or some of his spirits
Eonwe Valar: Aye, or one of his servants.
Eonwe Valar: So Varda's turn?
VardaValar1: If Fin says the answer is complete enough
VardaValar1: If not up to snuff, she can ask another until someone answers right.
FinduilasV: actually if ye remember , there was the first great battle at the time of awakening
VardaValar1: I don't know what you mean by "something out of the shadow'
VardaValar1: Aye, we were there. ;-)
FinduilasV: indeed :-) i mean a creature of shadow and fear
FinduilasV: indeed a servant of Morgoth :-)
FinduilasV: ;-)
VardaValar1: They had one or more evil beings posing as Orome on a horse, grabbing up lone elves, so the elves would fear Orome when he came.
VardaValar1: When Orome finally came,
FinduilasV: i have the quote actually
VardaValar1: the elves who could not get over the fear and see what he really was, or just ran,
VardaValar1: and just ran
VardaValar1: were caught and apparently turned into Orcs.
VardaValar1: The first culling of elves.
VardaValar1: Fire away, Finduilas!
FinduilasV: Yet many of the Elves were filled with dread at his coming, and this was the doing of melkor. For by after knowledge hhe wise declare that Melkor, ever watchful, was first aware of the awakening of the quendi]
FinduilasV: and sent shadows and evil spirits to waylay them
FinduilasV: So it came to pass , some yeears before the coming of Orome, that if any of the Eves strayed far abroad , alone or few together they would often vanish
FinduilasV: amd mever return , and he quendi said that the hunter had caiught them, and theu were afraod
FinduilasV: afraid
FinduilasV: quote finisjh
VardaValar1: Thank you, Finduilas.
VardaValar1: So did I pass or do you need to ask another? : )
FinduilasV: pASS :-)
VardaValar1: Thank you
VardaValar1: This is a test of your typing skills, folks!
VardaValar1: Name four dog-like, wolf-like creatures by name, and their masters. You can type them separately if you like, but someone else may use it too. ; )
Srekal86 has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: Carcharoth, Morgoth his master
ArPharazonV: Huan, master is... Orome?
ArPharazonV: or wait, he came along with the sons of Feanor, no?
Eonwe Valar: Huan/Celegorm, Draugluin/Morgoth, Carcharoth/Morgoth, Grip/Farmer Maggot.
VardaValar1: Any master will do : )
ArPharazonV: Draugluin was servant of Sauron, I would have said
ArPharazonV: but as technically Sauron was a servant of Morgoth :-)
Eonwe Valar: Draugluin was bred by Morgoth with the specific purpose of killing Huan.
VardaValar1: Eonwe, you won that round. Fire!
Eonwe Valar: NM, that was Carcharoth that was bred to kill Huan.
VardaValar1: There you go
Eonwe Valar: But I hold to the master/hounds list :}
VardaValar1: Aye, that is what won it.
Eonwe Valar: ok
Eonwe Valar: List the 3 Elven Kinslayings and the participants.
VardaValar1: Feanor's people vs Teleri, Feanorians vs the refugees at the river Sirion's mouth, um
ArPharazonV: and the Feanorians vs Dior in Doriath
VardaValar1: Right on, Phar : )
GwaihirValar has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Phar has hijack rights. : )
ArPharazonV: friendly kind, weren't they, those Feanorians? ;-)
VardaValar1: Aiya Gwaihir!
ArPharazonV: hijack rights?
VardaValar1: They had a nasty oath driving them, but aye, not so nice.
ArPharazonV: well, that wouldn't be fair, you had 1 more than me :-)
VardaValar1: I got the first two and couldn't think of the last one.
VardaValar1: When you said it, then it came back, but I didn't get it. : )
Eonwe Valar: But no one has said all three,... :}
FinduilasV: /me eyes from Valrda to Ar Pharazon
VardaValar1: type fast!
ArPharazonV: it's yours, really
VardaValar1: Feanorians vs Teleri, Feanorians vs Sirion refugees of Doriath and Gondolin, Feanorians vs Dior's
VardaValar1: Only because you're not typing! ;-)
ArPharazonV: hehe
Eonwe Valar: Varda again, heh
VardaValar1: Bet you remembered the two I had, Phar!
ArPharazonV: sure, but I didn't type fast enough!
VardaValar1: Anyone could've typed that one in, hehe.
VardaValar1: Ok, name three dragons. : )
ArPharazonV: Smaug, Ancalagon, and Glaurung
VardaValar1: This is also open book, and you guys can name different answers for fun too.
Eonwe Valar: Ancalagon, Smaug, Glaurung.
Eonwe Valar: Chrysophylax :}
VardaValar1: lol good!
ArPharazonV: Onyxia!
VardaValar1: hehe - Tolkien dragons
Eonwe Valar: Different Tolkien answers :}
ArPharazonV: ahh
ArPharazonV: ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Hence Tolkien Trivia :}
ArPharazonV: good point!
FinduilasV: /me grins
VardaValar1: Phar got it in first. Go ahead, Golden One.
ArPharazonV: there was a fourth dragon... but I can't recall the name
ArPharazonV: oh, allright... hmm... lemme think
STEvilaim: no love for scatha? :p
ArPharazonV: name... ehrm.... 6 Valar!
ArPharazonV: Scatha! that's it
VardaValar1: hehe
STEvilaim: Varda, Ulmo, Aule, Nemo, Orome, Elessa
VardaValar1: Manwe, Ulmo, Orome, Tulkas, Mandos, Lorien,
FinduilasV: Manwe. Ilmo, , Namo, Yavanna, Tulkas
Eonwe Valar: Ulmo, Manwë, Aulë, Oromë, Tulkas, Irmo,
FinduilasV: Irmo i mean lol
VardaValar1: Ilmo sounds like a cross between Irmo and Ulmo : )
ArPharazonV: hmm... I don't recall... who was Elessa?
VardaValar1: You mean maybe Nessa?
Eonwe Valar: Elessar was Aragorn. No Elessa to my memory :}
STEvilaim: a name that popped into my head really quick :p
STEvilaim: probably meant nessa, i'm going by ~8 year old memory here
ArPharazonV: then I have no choice but to pass it to Varda :-)
STEvilaim: :p
VardaValar1: Pop into these sessions enough and it'll be fresher. You're well on your way, Scatha. Figured you'd get the dragons1
VardaValar1: This one comes from Sauron who is over here:
STEvilaim: I was busy.. forum moderation duties ;-)
VardaValar1: Who were the members of the "efficient conspiracy"?
VardaValar1: Need a hint?
FinduilasV: Merry, Pippin , Sam, Fredegar Bolger?
Eonwe Valar: Sam, Pippin, Merry, Fatty?
ArPharazonV: Sam, Merry, Pippin, Fatty?
ArPharazonV: Finduilas wins!
VardaValar1: Fin is first : )
VardaValar1: Good job, with the full name yet!
FinduilasV: /me bows
FinduilasV: hmmm, always these questions ;-)
VardaValar1: annnny Tolkien book. : )
FinduilasV: what is the thought that Yavanne put into the music with the awakening of the children of illuvatar and what form did it take?
VardaValar1: Ents, protectors of her trees against those who would use them for wood.
Eonwe Valar: Spirits going into the trees and inhabiting them. Took the form of ents.
FinduilasV: battle it out ye two :-)
VardaValar1: Some might think Tom fits in there too, but that's questionable.
VardaValar1: so we'll ignore that. ;-)
Eonwe Valar: I have to concede to Varda's faster typing :}
FinduilasV: i did think of him when i first read it , admittedly :-)
FinduilasV: ;-)
VardaValar1: Typing is handy
thesirg3 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: What instrument did Bombur play?
STEvilaim: hmm.. Yavanna is in cahoots with Aluin, who gave time which the ents take a lot of? :p
VardaValar1: Aiya Farmer Maggot!
thesirg3: Aiya
VardaValar1: lol Scatha!
ArPharazonV: Aiya Farmer!
VardaValar1: Question is up! Type fast!
Eonwe Valar: lyre?
VardaValar1: Open book. Not lyre.
ArPharazonV: a drum
VardaValar1: Phar got it!
ArPharazonV: thanks to the book ;-)
VardaValar1: Gooood book
ArPharazonV: now... a question... always with the questions...
VardaValar1: And you thought answering was hard!
ArPharazonV: well, to stay close at home, so to speak... name 4 Numenorean kings!
Eonwe Valar: Minstir, Aldarion, Calion :}, Palantir.
Eonwe Valar: *Minastir
VardaValar1: Elros, Tar-Minyatar, Tar-Telperion, Tar-Calion
VardaValar1: heh, Go Eonwe!
ArPharazonV: Eonwe it is!
Eonwe Valar: Ok, here's a hint up front: I expect everyone tested within the last 5 years to know the answer :}
VardaValar1: Var, Phar, Fin, and Eonwe have now all answered two questions and can start calling other people to ask questions!
ArPharazonV: oh, btw, Varda, Elros and Tar-Minyatur were the same ;-)
VardaValar1: aye, was error
VardaValar1: was going to type another
VardaValar1: Eonwe got it 2 ways : )
ArPharazonV: hehe
Eonwe Valar: What is it that finally drove Denethor mad?
VardaValar1: Seeing the Corsair ships coming, in the palantir.
ArPharazonV: he thought he'd lost his second son?
FinduilasV: oh what question , Eonwe, where did i see it recently?
FinduilasV: /me scratches head
thesirg3: I'd agree with Phar, that's what came to mind
Eonwe Valar: Varda got it :}
ArPharazonV: but yeah, I think it was the ships in the Palantir that was the answer I said on my test :-)
Eonwe Valar: It was seeing the Corsairs that finally pushed him over the edge.
VardaValar1: When he lost Faramir, he went and looked in the palantir.
VardaValar1: not lost, but
VardaValar1: saw him so ill.
Eonwe Valar: It was Faramir's injury that pushed him to look into the Palantir again.
VardaValar1: What Eonwe said. : )
VardaValar1: Farmer Maggot is grabbing a book and will be asking the next question for me. : )
Eonwe Valar: Varda's turn :}
Eonwe Valar: ok :}
Eonwe Valar: afk for a quick sec.
VardaValar1: The Vala of time has slow and fast seconds according to how far up the gravity well you are.
FinduilasV: here they are usually slow ;-)
VardaValar1: You are nearer sea level then. : )
FladrifV: oh uhm Aiya and namarie at the same time
VardaValar1: Oh, and Ulmo spent a solid week sailing the boat he rebuilt, the Hirilonde. : )
VardaValar1: Happy Anniversary, Ent!
FladrifV: *bows* so to you
VardaValar1: *curtsy*
FinduilasV: /me waves at Fladrif
ArPharazonV: Namarie, Flad!
thesirg3: probably easy, but what was the name of the mountain Smaug resided in?
Eonwe Valar: back
VardaValar1: Erebor
Eonwe Valar: Erebor
FladrifV has left the room.
VardaValar1: I'm trying to calll on Glorfindel.
thesirg3: I would have said Raven hill
thesirg3: Chapter 15, second page in my edition
thesirg3: "this very hiehg twas once named Ravenhill, because there was a wise and famous pair, old Carc and his wife, that lived abouve the gaurd-chamber"
thesirg3: (The Hobbit)
Eonwe Valar: I'm pretty sure that was a specific spot on Erebor, though.
thesirg3: ah
VardaValar1: As I understand it, that was a hill very near Erebor, what is called a foothill.
VardaValar1: Ravenhill and the Ravens are something we almost never think of talking about.
VardaValar1: Very interesting to bring up.
VardaValar1: Can't seem to reach Glorfindel
Glorfindel VG: back
Glorfindel VG: whatsup?
ArPharazonV: and there he is!
VardaValar1: He's back!
thesirg3: off topic, but does anyone here play Rise of Nations?
VardaValar1: You get to ask the next Tolkien Trivia, Glorfindel!
Glorfindel VG: trivia question or a topic?
VardaValar1: Trivia, from absolutely any Tolkien book.
Glorfindel VG: okay
VardaValar1: JRRT or Christopher though : )
VardaValar1: (Simon is writing murder mysteries, I think it was.)
FinduilasV: indeed
Glorfindel VG: Who were the members of the Istari, and what became of them?
STEvilaim: hah, found a good question to stump varda with... now to answer one fast enough to be able to use it ;-)
VardaValar1: Go Scatha!
VardaValar1: Gandalf, went to Valinor after fulfilling the mission, Radagast who may have remained in M-e taking care of Olvar and Kelvar, Alatar and Pallando set up cults among humans in the East, Saruman went bad and was knifed by Grima.
VardaValar1: Is that what you were looking for?
VardaValar1: Ok, guys. I'm not answering the next one. : ) You'll have to do it!
STEvilaim: Radagast, Alatar, and Pallando as well.
STEvilaim: er..
Glorfindel VG: aye
STEvilaim: Saruman :p
VardaValar1: : )
VardaValar1: I call on Arwen!
Arwen V1: hehe =)
Arwen V1: My question: What is the name of Aragorn's ring that he gives to Arwen, the heirloom of his House?
VardaValar1: *clamps hand over mouth*
STEvilaim: Ring of Barahir :p
Arwen V1: yay! =)
Glorfindel VG: barahir
VardaValar1: Good, a couple knew it!
STEvilaim: now to see if I can stump varda ;-)
VardaValar1: Please! I love that : )
VardaValar1: Merry and Sauron got me good on the Anniversary : )
STEvilaim: Name the three Palantir that lay in the domain of Ulmo :D
VardaValar1: Good stumper : )
ArPharazonV: the Palantiri of Osgiliath, Annuminas, and...
ArPharazonV: Amon Sul?
STEvilaim: Phar gets it ;-)
VardaValar1: yay Phar!
Eonwe Valar: That was a good one.
VardaValar1: They lay in the domain of Ulmo?
VardaValar1: man
STEvilaim: Lost to the sea
ArPharazonV: they were lost in the sea :-)
VardaValar1: Aye, need to dig up palantir stuff. Good one!
ArPharazonV: hmm
ArPharazonV: how many rings were there, and how were they divided at the time of the destruction of the One Ring?
Eonwe Valar: It doesn't say how many rings there were.
VardaValar1: Sauron had pretty much all but the Three.
Eonwe Valar: But Sauron recovered roughly 16.
thesirg3: 7 rings were the ringwraiths, eh?
ArPharazonV: well, of those mentioned in the poem
VardaValar1: He may have picked up the lesser ones
VardaValar1: 9 for the Ringwraiths, but held by Sauron.
FinduilasV: three for the elf kings under the light, seven for the dwarves in the halls of stone, nine for mortal men doomed to die,
ArPharazonV: not considering the lesser ones then
thesirg3: ah
Eonwe Valar: Well, by the poemn, 20
Eonwe Valar: 9 for wraiths, and he held 3 from the Dwarf lords, the other 4 destroyed or eaten by dragons.
Eonwe Valar: Galadriel, Elrond, and Gandalf held the 3.
VardaValar1: aye, 20 counting the One
Eonwe Valar: Frodo held the 1
VardaValar1: Aye, Eonwe
thesirg3: \
thesirg3: er, whoops
ArPharazonV: close, Eonwe, very close, but 1 small detail is wrong ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Well, technically, Mount Doom/Gollum held the One at its destruction :}
ArPharazonV: exactly!
VardaValar1: Actually
VardaValar1: Frodo still held it technically
thesirg3: hehe
FinduilasV has left the room.
ArPharazonV: well, it was still his finger
FinduilasV has entered the room.
VardaValar1: The Ring thought it was still on Frodo's finger. As it was, but the finger was not attached to Frodo.
FinduilasV: in the land of mordor where the shadows lie
thesirg3: he didn't possess it, put it that way :-P
STEvilaim: posession is 9/10ths of the law.. :p
VardaValar1: But the Ring obeyed Frodo's command, and thus Gollum went over the cliff, went into fire.
ArPharazonV: no matter the case or how you see it
ArPharazonV: Eonwe got all the (possible) answers!
ArPharazonV: so it's his turn once more
VardaValar1: It was the command set on it if Gollum harmed Frodo, like biting off his finger.
VardaValar1: Aye, go Eonwe!
Eonwe Valar: Picking contender to ask next question :}
Arwen V1: hehe
VardaValar1: *hears pages flipping madly*
STEvilaim: no books here ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Gwaihir gets to ask the question :}
VardaValar1: Maybe those were wings flapping then.
GwaihirValar: lol quite
thesirg3: gotta get back to work, later
VardaValar1: Namarie!
thesirg3 has left the room.
FinduilasV: i think i strike colours too :-)
FinduilasV: :-)
FinduilasV: <-)
FinduilasV: ;-)
VardaValar1: Mara mesta, Finduilas!
FinduilasV: /me bows
Eonwe Valar: Take care :}
FinduilasV: May the stars keep ye safe :-)
FinduilasV: Namarie!
FinduilasV has left the room.
GwaihirValar: Gimli was permitted/given two things denied to Feanor, what were they?
VardaValar1: Three of Galadriel's hairs as one. And Valinor.
GwaihirValar: correct :-)
VardaValar1: yay!
VardaValar1: Ok, Eowyn has a fun one to drive you all nuts.
VardaValar1: Do all Balrogs have wings, or just the girls?
Glorfindel VG: hehe
Eonwe Valar: Why do girl balrogs need wings? :}
MrMonkey2002Blah: Airheads?
STEvilaim: !
MrMonkey2002Blah: lol
VardaValar1: It's a reference to Dark Crystal. :-)
Eonwe Valar: hehe
Eonwe Valar: I never did watch that :}
STEvilaim: mmm... Gelflings
VardaValar1: Aye! that one!
VardaValar1: I enjoyed it : )
VardaValar1: so Bombur is the only one to give any sort of answer!
VardaValar1: There being no wrong answer. ;-)
VardaValar1: Bombur, your question!
MrMonkey2002Blah: What two types of animals are reported to reside in Mirkwood that are black, but not normally so?
VardaValar1: *being quiet*
ArPharazonV: I'd go with squirrels from our RP, but I'm not sure those actually came from the book
ArPharazonV: because... well... we made them pretty fearsome ;-)
MrMonkey2002Blah: Well you got the squirrels
ArPharazonV: no idea about the other one... spiders?
STEvilaim: rats? :p
VardaValar1: It's from The Hobbit, for a hint.
Star of Phaet: bunnies?
Glorfindel VG: birds
ArPharazonV: hobbits!
MrMonkey2002Blah: lol
ArPharazonV: ...no, wait
VardaValar1: No, type faster than he does!
MrMonkey2002Blah: one more guess then I have to go to the four horsemen
Glorfindel VG: bats
Glorfindel VG: rats
Glorfindel VG: cats
STEvilaim: wargs?
Star of Phaet: cats
STEvilaim: :p
Star of Phaet: (eek, lagging)
MrMonkey2002Blah: butterflies
ArPharazonV: snakes
ArPharazonV: dragons
ArPharazonV: platypus!
Eonwe Valar: Candy Corn?
Eonwe Valar: So I guess nobody got the second one :}
VardaValar1: I did, but we talked in the side window so I can't say. : )
ArPharazonV: Dwarves
STEvilaim: Trees.. but they're not animals so
Eonwe Valar: I think Bombur alreaedy told us what it was :}
VardaValar1: Aye, he did. : )
ArPharazonV: ohh
ArPharazonV: haha
VardaValar1: Bombur, you are free to ask another if you like!
STEvilaim: drat, i've gotta scoot. Namarie ;-)
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
VardaValar1: Fly out of arrow range!
STEvilaim has left the room.
MrMonkey2002Blah: Which key evil character of LOTR cannot swim (not the ring wraiths)?
ArPharazonV: some Sackville-Baggins?
MrMonkey2002Blah: ha
VardaValar1: good answer!
MrMonkey2002Blah: Not what I was looking for
GwaihirValar: is it Wormtongue?
MrMonkey2002Blah: Gwaihir got it
MrMonkey2002Blah: !
MrMonkey2002Blah: q
VardaValar1: cool! Where does it say Grima can't swim? Not arguing, just for reference.
GwaihirValar: I don't remember exactly lol
GwaihirValar: I just remember reading or hearing it somewhere...
VardaValar1: Bombur?
ArPharazonV: yes, Bombur was very evil ;-)
VardaValar1: He asked the question.
VardaValar1: but gluttony... ;-)
ArPharazonV: good point!
ArPharazonV: let's call half the Shire evil too :-)
VardaValar1: MrMonkey aka Bombur
MrMonkey2002Blah: lol
MrMonkey2002Blah: Bombur just liked food
VardaValar1: Sauron is all for that.
MrMonkey2002Blah: It says he cant swim when treebeard is carrying him
VardaValar1: Required 6 dwarves to carry him, he got so fat.
VardaValar1: Thank you. You stumped me. : )
MrMonkey2002Blah: and He tells him that the watter is shallow and its dirty
MrMonkey2002Blah: but it wont hurt him
MrMonkey2002Blah: and he tosses him
MrMonkey2002Blah: and grima goes up the tower
MrMonkey2002Blah: Ents hate dirty water
Menelvagor Valar: that WoW south park vid rocks :-P
ArPharazonV: hehe
VardaValar1: pretty funny. Sauron came in here cracking up.
VardaValar1: So Gwaihir gets to ask the next one!
GwaihirValar: yep page 216 of the 1999 harper collins publishing of the two towers
GwaihirValar: hmm... lets see....
VardaValar1: My newest is 1994, thought it was sooo recent. hehe
VardaValar1: Name of chapter is a big help
ArPharazonV: mine says both 1994, and 2001
GwaihirValar: this was the edition released alongside the movie
GwaihirValar: or just before
GwaihirValar: pardon
VardaValar1: p403 is the first page of my Two Towers
ArPharazonV: mine was alongside the movie, I think
ArPharazonV: and indeed, it's 216 in mine :-)
VardaValar1: Saruman on the cover :-)
GwaihirValar: but anyways... its in Flotsam and Jetsam
VardaValar1: thanks!
GwaihirValar: Well, I guess I'll ask an oldy but a goodie... which hobbit, out of merry and pippin, was the largest?(Prior to their time with Fangorn, as we don't know exactly how much they each grew during that time ;-))
VardaValar1: there it is. Grima states" I cannot swim"
VardaValar1: Merry
GwaihirValar: indeed
VardaValar1: And he caught up on the ent draught, I think, if that's not just movie.
VardaValar1: Merry was the older of the two.
GwaihirValar: not only that, but when Aragorn is tracking them and Pippin leaves the trail to drop the leaf off his cloak as a sign
GwaihirValar: Aragorn goes 'A hobbit left the trail here, Pippin I think... he was smaller'(not direct quote, but the same content)
VardaValar1: Paraphrase is good.
VardaValar1: aye, it was in the book that Merry was taller
VardaValar1: thanks, Gwaihir : )
GwaihirValar: mp :-)
VardaValar1: May I call on Gilraen?
Star of Phaet: Right... this is a rather silly one, but it's where my book opened and I can't see enough fo the text to search for a more difficult one ;-)
Star of Phaet: Who rescued Gandalf from Orthanc?
VardaValar1: Sillier than Eowyn's?
VardaValar1: Gwaihir :-)
GwaihirValar: me ;-)
Glorfindel VG: gwaihair wanna take that>?
Star of Phaet: quite possibly, Varda ;-)
VardaValar1: lol Glorfindel
Glorfindel VG: :-)
GwaihirValar: I already did... he was still heavy at that point
VardaValar1: hehe
GwaihirValar: much easier to carry him to lorien from the top of Caradhras... much easier.
VardaValar1: It is time to hear from the Lady Arwen!
Arwen V1: Okay, teehee!
Arwen V1: My question is what are the names of the two trees of Valinor?
VardaValar1: Telperien, Laurelenin. ohh, spelling
Arwen V1: the spelling I have is Telperion and Laurelin, but still correct =)
GwaihirValar: I've gotta go afk for as hort while to scrounge up food so I can take my medicine...
ArPharazonV: Laurelenin? ;-)
ArPharazonV: interesting... change
VardaValar1: couldn't have that few syllables! (teehee)
VardaValar1: Please do, Gwaihir!
GwaihirValar: I think you were thinking of the original name of Lothlorien Varda ;-)
GwaihirValar: but afk now
Star of Phaet: it needed to match syllables with Telperion, Varda? ;-)
VardaValar1: aye t you both
VardaValar1: Let's hear from the golden-haired Balrog-slayer!
Glorfindel VG: What were the names of Farmer Maggot's Dogs?
Glorfindel VG: As were mentioned in the book
VardaValar1: Grip, Fang, Wolf
Glorfindel VG: aye :-)
Glorfindel VG: Who was it that prophesized that no living man would kill the Witchking?
VardaValar1: You!
VardaValar1: Menelvagor's turn : )
Menelvagor Valar: Glorfindel II :)
Glorfindel VG: hehe sorry!
VardaValar1: faster than typing your name ;-)
Menelvagor Valar: Ok, since I love asking multiple questions in one, here it comes :)
Menelvagor Valar: it's pretty easy though :)
VardaValar1: whee
Menelvagor Valar: Name the Two Towers once belonging to Gondor and one captured by Mordor, before the one was captured in both Westron and Elvish. (Sindarin if I'm not mistaken)
Menelvagor Valar: Thus 8 names are required.
VardaValar1: Minas Ithil, Minas Morgul. Minas Tirith.
ArPharazonV: Minas Anor
VardaValar1: Minas Anor being early name of Minas Tirith, I concede
ArPharazonV: Tower of Guard, Tower of Sorcery
Glorfindel VG: tower of the moon
Glorfindel VG: tower of the sun
VardaValar1: oops dind't translate
VardaValar1: aye
ArPharazonV: tower of the setting sun
ArPharazonV: and tower of the rising moon?
VardaValar1: Anor just means sun, ithil just means moon
ArPharazonV: yes, allright, but that's how they were known
Menelvagor Valar: Having both scored 3 correct names, Varda and Pharazon are equal.
Menelvagor Valar: however, with the wrong translations, Pharazon just gave it away to Varda :-P
VardaValar1: Phar takes it. I didn't read the question properly. : )
VardaValar1: I would not have translated at all
Menelvagor Valar: then Phar takes it.
ArPharazonV: allright...
ArPharazonV: then I pass it along to Varda ;-)
VardaValar1: lol
VardaValar1: What celebration did Gildor's party have that the hobbits were involved in at least as observers?
Menelvagor Valar: wild guess, feast of the full moon? :-P
Star of Phaet: midsummer?
VardaValar1: Open book. : )
Menelvagor Valar: none with me I'm afraid.
VardaValar1: Clue, it is not an unusual celebration, happens a lot.
Menelvagor Valar: harvest?
Star of Phaet: full moon?
VardaValar1: When did they burst into song?
VardaValar1: They waited for a particular event, then burst into song.
Menelvagor Valar: Well, it's either when the moon reached its zenith, or when the sun went down beyond the horizon.
ArPharazonV: "Then by some shift of airs all the mist was drawn away like a veil
GwaihirValar: oh.... I think it was actually the first stars in the sky
VardaValar1: : )
VardaValar1: keep going Phar. close Gwai
ArPharazonV: and there leaned up, as he climbed over the rim of the world, the Swordsman of the Sky, Menelvagor with his shining belt.
Menelvagor Valar: *mumbles loudly* "stars, now why did I not think of that?"
VardaValar1: It's worse...
ArPharazonV: The Elves all burst into song."
Menelvagor Valar: it's me myself.
GwaihirValar: lol
VardaValar1: Aye : )
ArPharazonV: exactly :
ArPharazonV: :-)
Menelvagor Valar: too close I guess :)
VardaValar1: Well done, Phar!
VardaValar1: Aye, Menel!
Menelvagor Valar: would know more about my previous name :-D
VardaValar1: Your current name?
Menelvagor Valar: so ask a Turgonic question :)
GwaihirValar: lol
ArPharazonV: ok, a question, a bit Turgon-ish
VardaValar1: hehe - go Phar!
Menelvagor Valar: yay :)
ArPharazonV: name 5 of the Houses of Gondolin!
Menelvagor Valar: erm...
VardaValar1: Glorfindel ought to get at least one : )
ArPharazonV: hehe
Menelvagor Valar: haven't read the Battle of Gondolin in BoLT 2 enough to know those :(
VardaValar1: You have BoLT with you? :-)
Menelvagor Valar: But, there was the people of the craft, lead by a craftsman whose name I cannot recall...
GwaihirValar: I can only think of two... the house of the golden flower and the house of the fountain(I think its called) but.... I need to go lie down, my sickness is overcoming me again... farewell friends
Menelvagor Valar: in BoLT he was said to have slain many balrogs, several dragons and a host of orcs with just his people before being subdued.
Menelvagor Valar: then there's Maeglin and his people of the Mole, or the miners.
ArPharazonV: Rog, Menel?
Menelvagor Valar: Glorfindel and his people of the fountains.
ArPharazonV: but what is the name of his House? ;-)
Menelvagor Valar: Aye, Rog.
Menelvagor Valar: what I said, no idea :)
VardaValar1: Take care, Gwaihir!
ArPharazonV: Namarie, Gwaihir!
Menelvagor Valar: Then there was this guy who was so fat that he had to ride to battle and so scared he didn't turn up in the end.
GwaihirValar: thank you
GwaihirValar: farewell :-)
GwaihirValar has left the room.
Menelvagor Valar: and of course the House of Fingolfin, from Turgon himself.
Menelvagor Valar: and that's 5, although only 1 named :)
Menelvagor Valar: Unless you would count the House of Hador from Tuor.
ArPharazonV: I would not, as you know exactly what names I'm referring to :-)
ArPharazonV: well, the type of names
Menelvagor Valar: I don't :)
Srekal86 has left the room.
ArPharazonV: Houses like the Golden Flower and the Fountain, like Glorfindel mentioned earlier
ArPharazonV: ehrrr Gwaihir
ArPharazonV: like Gwaihir mentioned
ArPharazonV: the royal houses of Gondolin, which does not mean the "houses" of Hador etc
Menelvagor Valar: well, I think I have mentioned Maeglin and his moles.
ArPharazonV: you did, aye
Menelvagor Valar: Rog was of the Hammer. (I think)
ArPharazonV: the Hammer of Wrath, but good enough :-)
Menelvagor Valar: and it wouldn't surprise me if Tuor led a house of some kind of wave or the crest of a wave.
ArPharazonV: the Wing, actually ;-)
Menelvagor Valar: of course!
Menelvagor Valar: the swans he saw when travelling into Mithlond through that massive gorge.
ArPharazonV: but I dare say this question has gone on long enough, and will grant Menelvagor the honor of coming up with a new question, unless you want me to name a few more houses
Menelvagor Valar: I'll take the houses before I ask a question.
ArPharazonV: like the Swallow, the Heavenly Arch, the Pillar, the Tower of Snow, the Tree, and the Harp :-)
Menelvagor Valar: okay O:-)
ArPharazonV: so go ahead!
Menelvagor Valar: What did Tuor wear (aiming at a particular piece of clothing) at his arrival in Gondolin and how did Glorfindel recognize him?
Menelvagor Valar: ......
Glorfindel VG: a hat?
VardaValar1: White Wing, Mole, Swallow, Heavenly Arch, Tree, Golden Flower, Fountain, Harp, Hammer of Wrath, King.
Menelvagor Valar: not a hat :)
Menelvagor Valar: and we're already on the next question, Varda :)
Glorfindel VG: hehe
VardaValar1: aye, had to type fast
ArPharazonV: an.. hauberk?
Menelvagor Valar: Shall I allow to open books now?
TH0R0NGIL: wasn't it the shield he found on the shore?
VardaValar1: It was always open book
Menelvagor Valar: Book of Unfinished Tales :)
VardaValar1: Said we could at the start
Menelvagor Valar: ah, missed that :)
VardaValar1: We didn't have to say which book and all are available for questions, even Farmer Giles : )
Menelvagor Valar: Both Phar and Thorongil are close on the 2nd part of the question :)
Menelvagor Valar: (Fun question in between, which village did Farmer Giles come from?)
Menelvagor Valar: Ok, the hint is that for the first part of the question, he wore this when he entered Gondolin, and cast it aside so what was worn underneath marked him so that Glorfindel recognized him.
TH0R0NGIL: oh, the cloak that Ulmo gave him
Menelvagor Valar: Thorongil takes part 1 :)
TH0R0NGIL: and underneath was the livery of Nevrast
Menelvagor Valar: and part 2 has already been partially answered.
ArPharazonV: the hauberk, the shield... something else? a sword?
TH0R0NGIL: by which Ecthelion recognized him
Menelvagor Valar: ick.
Menelvagor Valar: Ecthelion...
Menelvagor Valar: no wonder it went bad :P
ArPharazonV: oh, ok, now I'm lost :-)
Menelvagor Valar: it's late :-P
TH0R0NGIL: lol
Menelvagor Valar: And it was indeed the Hauberk, Shield and Sword Ulmo had commanded Turgon to make, so that one day he would recognize the one Ulmo would send as his messenger.
Menelvagor Valar: Thorongil takes it though, the livery of Nevrast was sketchy, but good enough.
VardaValar1: back. Farmer Giles of *Ham*
Menelvagor Valar: aye, Varda :)
Menelvagor Valar: and I would have skewered the person saying Farmer Giles of Steak.
Menelvagor Valar: Thorongil, your question.
VardaValar1: *stays vewy vewy quiet*
Glorfindel VG: Farmer Giles of Steak ;-)
TH0R0NGIL: agh, now i have to ask one?
TH0R0NGIL: lol
TH0R0NGIL: um...
Menelvagor Valar: *skewers Glorfindel*
VardaValar1: Asking questions is also open book : )
TH0R0NGIL: just from unfinished tales?
VardaValar1: Never mess with the Swordsman
Menelvagor Valar: any book.
TH0R0NGIL: k
VardaValar1: Any Tolkien book at all
TH0R0NGIL: one sec...
VardaValar1: We just did one from Farmer Giles of Ham : )
Menelvagor Valar: I figured the Tolkien part was a given 8-)
TH0R0NGIL: thats a great book
TH0R0NGIL: What did Feanor keep the Silmarils in, before Morgoth stole them?
Menelvagor Valar: in crystal containers in his fortress in the north of Valinor, which his father guarded during his absence.
TH0R0NGIL: almost
Menelvagor Valar: surely not metal :)
TH0R0NGIL: no, crystal is right
TH0R0NGIL: only one "container" though
Menelvagor Valar: fidgety!
TH0R0NGIL: go ahead, i just wanted to throw something out there...didn't expect it to be hard
TH0R0NGIL: i'm not very good at thinking up questions, lol
Menelvagor Valar: What did Gimli and Legolas say to each other when discussing the defenses of Helm's Deep (and in particular the strengthening thereof)?
Menelvagor Valar: Phar, Varda, I know you know this one :)
TH0R0NGIL: well Legolas thought they needed more archers
Eonwe Valar: Gimli thought it was good ground as I recall, and wished he had a few more of his people.
Menelvagor Valar: can you be more specific?
Menelvagor Valar: and both of you are right, but not specific enough.
TH0R0NGIL: "give me a year and a hundred of my folk and I will make this a place armies will break upon like water"
Menelvagor Valar: that's the Gimli quote :)
VardaValar1: "even more would I give for a hundred good archers of Mirkwood"
VardaValar1: sorry, got sidetracked : )
Menelvagor Valar: and that's the Legolas one.
VardaValar1: *high-five to Finrod*
TH0R0NGIL: :-D
Menelvagor Valar: or as in very bad English: Gimli: "Gimme 100 of me family and loads of time and we'll skewer em" Legolas: "Meh. gimme 100 of mine and we'll riddle em with arrows"
TH0R0NGIL: lol
VardaValar1: heh
ArPharazonV: ..no, I wouldn't have known that one :-)
Menelvagor Valar: Finrod, your question again :)
VardaValar1: Open book, np
TH0R0NGIL: no it's Varda's turn
TH0R0NGIL: :-P
VardaValar1: Oh goody!
VardaValar1: What is a "eucatastrophe"?
TH0R0NGIL: a catastrophe in Europe?
VardaValar1: book "On Fairy-stories"
VardaValar1: lol
Menelvagor Valar: A Great Victory at heavy losses?
TH0R0NGIL: that would be Pyrric...
Glorfindel VG: the sudden turn of events at the end of a story which result in the protagonist's well-being
Menelvagor Valar: meh.
VardaValar1: that could work. It's the joyous turn in the story, aye. Glorfindel takes it!
Glorfindel VG: Good Catastrophe
VardaValar1: It's a term made by JRRT.
Menelvagor Valar: I'll remember it.
VardaValar1: Well done, Glor!
TH0R0NGIL: Interesting
Glorfindel VG: The Nazgul who was 2nd in command, apparently, had a name.. What was it?
VardaValar1: Khamul
Menelvagor Valar: that one :)
VardaValar1: hehe
Glorfindel VG: :-(
VardaValar1: The answer had a Second. : ) Thanks Menel
Menelvagor Valar: just for the fun of it, what was Khamul before he became a Ringwraith?
VardaValar1: I was just trying to invite Khamul to the chat a while ago, very fresh in mind. : )
VardaValar1: black Numenorean
VardaValar1: king I think
Menelvagor Valar: if you say so :)
TH0R0NGIL: Khamul the Easterling wasn't it?
Menelvagor Valar: lol
Glorfindel VG: Sorcerer and Numenoreanking
Glorfindel VG: something
Menelvagor Valar: I thought he was a leader among the Umbar.
TH0R0NGIL: Yeah, I don't think he was Numenorean though
Menelvagor Valar: but it's Varda's question anyways :)
VardaValar1: Black Easterling is one of his names. Aye. Looked on Tolkien Encyc of the Valar Guild now that it's answered
VardaValar1: I wrote the article
Menelvagor Valar: He was called Sauron's lieutenant, Shadow of the East, and the Black Easterling.
VardaValar1: aye
Menelvagor Valar: (Wikipedia :-D)
VardaValar1: All that is also in ours
VardaValar1: You guys ever use ours?
VardaValar1: How about "Lord of Dol Guldur"?
Menelvagor Valar: has it a nice search option like Wiki? :-P
VardaValar1: Use the side menu Man, K, click Khamul
VardaValar1: You insist on one?
Menelvagor Valar: also says so in Wiki :)
Menelvagor Valar: nah.
VardaValar1: I can go for a Google search thing
VardaValar1: If I could get our people to use our Encyc that way, maybe I better
Menelvagor Valar: prefer not to, I don't like Google besides its quick use and even quicker discardage.
VardaValar1: I think the menu is faster than writing out the words in the Search, but whatever
Menelvagor Valar: possibly, will have to test that theory one day :)
VardaValar1: Less typing anyway : )
Glorfindel VG: many times when you google it the it ends up going to our site anyway
Menelvagor Valar: at any rate, your question Varda?
VardaValar1: I also have an A-Z menu trying to keep people happy
VardaValar1: What part of the painting of the Tree by Niggle remained longest?
Menelvagor Valar: the leaves I think.
Menelvagor Valar: and it's the 3rd link on the third page on a google search for Khamûl that ends up referring to us.
Menelvagor Valar: either the leaves or the roots.
Menelvagor Valar: but I only read that story once.
VardaValar1: Anyone else?
ArPharazonV: never read it, sorry
Glorfindel VG: The trunk?
VardaValar1: Anyone know the title of the story?
Menelvagor Valar: I know it had leaf or leaves in it...
VardaValar1: There is a special Google search I can rig to search only our site.
Eonwe Valar: I'm going to say the first leaf.
Menelvagor Valar: nah Varda, our site is great as it is :)
Menelvagor Valar: *admonishes himself to use it more*
VardaValar1: Not the first time someone said they wanted a search engine on it
VardaValar1: Farmer worked on one a while, but it was too big a headache
Menelvagor Valar: never said I wanted it, just that I type as fast, if not faster than I can move my mouse and click :)
VardaValar1: Eonwe, it doesn't say it's the first leaf, but one in a corner.
VardaValar1: k
Menelvagor Valar: Then again, I'm not an Ent, and therefore a tad hasty.
VardaValar1: If I'm supposed to make us compete with Wikipedia, which is not referenced, or copyrighted, or made responsible, guess I'd better work on it more. CSS, search engine
Eonwe Valar: I was going by memory, so I'll excuse my mistake this once. But I'll tell myself to not do it again :}
VardaValar1: I had to look to see if it was the first leaf
VardaValar1: It just says the only surviving leaf was from the corner of the painting.
Menelvagor Valar: If you were supposed to compete with Wikipedia, I think Wiki does a fair approximation of our work.
VardaValar1: ok, well, you know, I could just forget it and let everyone go with Wiki. Much less time-consuming that way. : )
Eonwe Valar: I prefer ours. Anybody who wnats to put anything up for anything can add to Wiki, and what I hear from people is that it's not always that accurate.
Eonwe Valar: But that's me.
Menelvagor Valar: aye, Eonwe.
Glorfindel VG: i agree
Eonwe Valar: I prefer my stuff to not be on Wiki.
VardaValar1: I'm not going to put anyone's on Wiki, as all ours is copyrighted to the author.
Menelvagor Valar: Our encyc is better.
VardaValar1: We need to work on it if we want to "compete" though.
Eonwe Valar: I always use our Encyclopedia when looking for info because I know I can count on a level of accuracy.
Menelvagor Valar: I thought it was Eonwe's turn to ask a question?
VardaValar1: It also gives a reference in the book, or at least which book.
Eonwe Valar: Aye, that also helps.
VardaValar1: We use original sources.
VardaValar1: Fire when ready, Eonwe
Glorfindel VG: and pictures!
Eonwe Valar: So even when I may have a difference, I can go to the source and check, see whether I'm wrong or I need to write a new article :}
Menelvagor Valar: and if I'm not mistaken, Khamûl made his first appearance in the CCG.
VardaValar1: Aye, wondered if anyone noticed the pictures. I collect tons.
Eonwe Valar: Khamul is a Tolkien name.
Glorfindel VG: they make all the difference to me :-)
VardaValar1: Khamul is from Tolkien.
Eonwe Valar: Ok
Menelvagor Valar: you're the experts :)
VardaValar1: Check the article in our Encyc for reference.
Menelvagor Valar: go Encyc!
VardaValar1: You're a Maia, so you're an expert too. : )
Eonwe Valar: Here's one that some of you may need a reference for :}
Menelvagor Valar: hit me :)
Eonwe Valar: Hint: If you don't know, check OUR Encyclopedia, because I KNOW it's there, hint hint :}
VardaValar1: *chuckle*
Menelvagor Valar: *grin*
Menelvagor Valar: *Encyc at the ready*
Eonwe Valar: What is the Tale of Qorinomi about?
VardaValar1: You completely flummoxed me
Eonwe Valar: I gave all the hint I'm going to give :}
VardaValar1: I have to put it under Q now.
VardaValar1: and maybe T
ArPharazonV: it's under the E :-)
ArPharazonV: the E of Eonwe!
ArPharazonV: amazing, the search engine's first link goes straight to that article ;-)
ArPharazonV: "Fionwë loved Urwendi, the maiden of the sun (later named Arien)
ArPharazonV: and in one tale (The Tale of Qorinomi. It is mentioned but not given.) goes to find and bring Urwendi back to Valinor after she gets lost in the endless passages of Ulmo’s realm."
Eonwe Valar: Phar gets it :}
Eonwe Valar: I told you to use our Encyclopedia, and that I knew it was in there :}
VardaValar1: Right after American Kennel Club
Menelvagor Valar: didn't find it though =-O
ArPharazonV: it's under Eonwe, Menelvagor :-)
Eonwe Valar: The Authors page would've been a good reference if nothing else, then narrow down the choices to my longer pieces.
VardaValar1: I need to put it under Q and T maybe?
ArPharazonV: or simply type it in a search engine and have the first link be Eonwe's article ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Adn which article was most likely to be a long one? The one on Eonwë, of course! :}
VardaValar1: well aye, it came right up on Google
Menelvagor Valar: lol
ArPharazonV: ok, my next question
ArPharazonV: hmmhmmz...
VardaValar1: Really need an article to justify it
Menelvagor Valar: Fionwë loved Urwendi, the maiden of the sun (later named Arien) and in one tale (The Tale of Qorinomi. It is mentioned but not given. ... (the exact text on Google :-P)
Eonwe Valar: There isn't much to tell about it other than what is mentioned in my article.
ArPharazonV: name 7 of the 12 books of HoME!
Menelvagor Valar: BoLT 1 and 2.
Menelvagor Valar: end knowledge
Menelvagor Valar: oh wait

VardaValar1: Road and other Writings
Eonwe Valar: Sauron Defeated, for extra credit.
VardaValar1: Return of the Shadow, Treason of Isengard
Menelvagor Valar: one word for that question + answer.
VardaValar1: War of the Ring
Menelvagor Valar: just one word.
Menelvagor Valar: meh.
VardaValar1: Sauron Defeated
VardaValar1: Morgoth's Ring
VardaValar1: War of the Jewels
VardaValar1: Peoples of M-e
Menelvagor Valar: I believe Eonwe has already mentioned them all :)
VardaValar1: new one coming out by Christopher on the Children of Hurin
ArPharazonV: well, I can safely say that Eonwe was the first to get 7
VardaValar1: Yay for typing speed : )
Eonwe Valar: Book XII (Coming Soon!) :}
Eonwe Valar: *XIII
Menelvagor Valar: that ain't no question :-P
VardaValar1: 13. He should count UT to make 14 ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Tolkien wrote a paper on an old Anglo-Saxon text. What was the name of this story?
VardaValar1: Beowulf
Eonwe Valar: Ouch, blinding flash of light speed :}
Menelvagor Valar: The paper was called "Beowulf and its characters" unless I am mistaken.
VardaValar1: Had to make up for my tardiness earlier. ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Beowulkf: The Monsters and the Critics.
Eonwe Valar: *Beowulf
Menelvagor Valar: fudge!
Eonwe Valar: I still need to get a copy of that.
VardaValar1: *dreams happily of chocolate and nuts*
Menelvagor Valar: good word to yell at people and then brotherly eat it :)
VardaValar1: hehe, aye Menel!
Eonwe Valar: All Varda's :}
Menelvagor Valar: Varda, your question, and I have to make it my last.
VardaValar1: The Anglo-Saxon ancient story was just Beowulf
VardaValar1: okies, good idea
Menelvagor Valar: (unless I get it, then it's second last :-P)
VardaValar1: Name three points of divergence between book and movies. ;-)
VardaValar1: Everyone has to give different ones!
Menelvagor Valar: Sam at stairs.
Menelvagor Valar: Helm's Deep
Eonwe Valar: Glorfindel, Tom Bombadil, Faramir.
Eonwe Valar: Or should I be specific?

Glorfindel VG: saruman dying at isengard
ArPharazonV: Denethor running across Minas Tirith on fire and throwing himself off
Glorfindel VG: scouring of the shire
Menelvagor Valar: the entire part of the Orcs carrying Frodo off to that tower thingy skipped.
Eonwe Valar: The music.. There was no music when I read the books, but for some reason music plays in the movies... :}
VardaValar1: rofl
Menelvagor Valar: more images!
ArPharazonV: less room for imagination...
VardaValar1: Elwing, Sauron, and Eowyn are here cracking up

Glorfindel VG: "may the grace of the valar protect you"
Glorfindel VG: that might be from the movie lol

TH0R0NGIL: I think it is
Eonwe Valar: You should know the context for each use of the word "Valar" :}
Eonwe Valar: You can look it up :}
Eonwe Valar: In case you're not :}
ArPharazonV: I did, the first 2 quotes were found by the Index
TH0R0NGIL: Those 2 are the only ones listed in the Index
Eonwe Valar: There's another.
ArPharazonV: for the third it says: "38 off." and I have no idea what that means
Eonwe Valar: The book index says that?
VardaValar1: 1009ff meaning and following pages in mine
VardaValar1: 646, 821
Eonwe Valar: Either way, I assure the crowning addition of these three quotes can be found...

ArPharazonV: your hints are not too subtle :-)
Eonwe Valar: hehe
Eonwe Valar: I'm gonna need a quote :}
Eonwe Valar: I don't think I could've made that hint too subtle and still had it make sense :}
Eonwe Valar: Well, maybe "I've throne this question out for a reason..." :}
VardaValar1: hehe
ArPharazonV: "Now come the days of the King, and may they be blessed while the thrones of the Valar endure!"
