Bombadil
- Says cannot be an Elf, or Eru Iluvatar. Some kind of "spirit" is
certainly possible.
Dislikes the popular idea of a Maia because the Maiar Sauron, Saruman,
and
Gandalf could be affected by the Ring. (Part of Sauron was in the Ring, the
other two were Istari who had been limited before arrival. -Varda ).
Might
be a Vala, except that Gandalf and others who should recognize a Vala,
don't.
Might be a nature spirit.

or What was Tom Bombadil?

he
was Iluvatar, could be a one-of-a-kind type. Tom's function
inside
the story was evidently to demonstrate a particular attitude towards
control
