Varda Valar (23:11:02):    Web:
Varda Valar (23:11:06):    Tolkien Site:
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:11:09):    I found the first one today among my recorded movies. Still not its turn though.
Varda Valar (23:11:17):    Additions to the Timeline, mainly the Great Years.
Varda Valar (23:11:38):    not done, but we have progress:
Varda Valar (23:11:40):    http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/events/timeline/Great_Years.htm
Varda Valar (23:12:01):    Some bits here and there added such as Aragorn's name under Aragorn
Varda Valar (23:12:28):    Actual meaning is not tree-king but kingly valour. From Peoples of Middle-earth.
Varda Valar (23:12:46):    So, little additions here and there.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:13:01):    tree-king? Not sure if I've heard of that before.
Varda Valar (23:13:02):    Feel free to email your own as you run across them. :)
Varda Valar (23:13:28):    Ara for high or royal or king. Gorn sounds a lot like tree as in Treebeard Fangorn
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:13:34):    Ah.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:13:43):    So he could've been beard-king too.
Varda Valar (23:14:07):    But it's not actually elvish, and the ara is the only part an elf would instantly translate. :)
Varda Valar (23:14:28):    Gorn is tree in Fan gorn
Varda Valar (23:14:43):    So that's where the thought comes from.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:14:42):    The linguistic parts are not my specialty ;)
Eonwe Valar (23:14:57):    Back,.. and funny you should mention going to see Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2,...
Varda Valar (23:15:06):    No worries. The comments are also for anyone reading.
Varda Valar (23:15:29):    Opening weekend, figure anyone who can will run see it. :)
Varda Valar (23:15:57):    Are you about to go?
Eonwe Valar (23:16:11):    Aye, gotta go in 15 minutes to make it, heh.
Varda Valar (23:16:16):    Woot!
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:16:21):    Have fun :)
Varda Valar (23:16:26):    or go early to get a good seat in the middle. :)
Varda Valar (23:16:43):    Do you have time to give a fast gaming report? If not, I can do it, no worries.
Eonwe Valar (23:16:58):    I have time, no worries, hehe.,
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:17:03):    Heh, reminds me when I was first at the Warcraft movie, got a seat smack in the middle of the room, right behind a defective seat so I knew nobody's sit in front of me.
Varda Valar (23:17:07):    okies. Fire when ready!
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:17:10):    *nobody'd
Varda Valar (23:17:17):    Smart, Phar.

Varda Valar (23:28:06):    Tolkien:
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:28:27):    Fladrif has given us a "yo"!
Varda Valar (23:28:39):    Some characters had similar roles, yet they were very different personalities and filled them differently even when doing just as well in their own ways.
Varda Valar (23:28:42):    Yo!
Varda Valar (23:28:49):    Thanks for passing that on. :)
Eonwe Valar (23:28:55):    OK, close enough to the bottm of the hour for me. Time to go :} Take care all and have fun with Tolkien :}
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:29:02):    Enjoy the movie!
Varda Valar (23:29:07):    Namarie Eonwe!
Arien V (23:29:10):    take care :)
Elladan (23:29:15):    cya!
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:29:20):    and Namarie
Varda Valar (23:30:01):    For instance, Aragorn was the head of the Rangers of the North, and Faramir was head of the Rangers of the South. Did they both do a good job with their rangers, as far as we know?
Varda Valar (23:30:16):    Both had duties outside the Rangers as well.
Arien V (23:31:07):    both did well as far as i can remember apart from being a bit outnumbered :)
Varda Valar (23:31:47):    Sounds right. And part of being rangers is to handle great number odds with guerrilla fighting. They don't have enough people for head to head bashing.
Arien V (23:31:49):    Aragorn and his rangers managed to keep the Shire safe for example
Varda Valar (23:32:18):    Most of the time, aye. Only the Nazgul managed to pass them and that's a bit much to ask of humans.
Arien V (23:32:43):    and they maintained places as good as they could .. planted Athelas if they had a chance .. stocked wood in campsites which provided shelter
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:32:53):    Faramir was in a bit more risky territory though.
Varda Valar (23:33:08):    Ithilien neighbored Mordor, aye.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:33:32):    did his best to disrupt troop gathering, but couldn't really keep the place safe
Varda Valar (23:33:45):    Not sure if the Southern rangers planted athelas unless by tradition. They didn't have king's hands there.
Varda Valar (23:34:24):    Until the major push by Mordor, both sets of rangers were able to handle most of the riff-raff baddies.
Varda Valar (23:34:50):    Both had some non-human in their genetics.
Varda Valar (23:35:04):    One in common. Which race was that?
Arien V (23:35:18):    Elven
Varda Valar (23:35:21):    Aye
Arien V (23:35:53):    Farahirs mother was the ster of Prince Imrahil if i remember right?>
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:36:00):    Must've been a bit more comfortable in the woods, then?
Varda Valar (23:36:56):    Aye, Finduilas
Varda Valar (23:37:06):    Didn't hurt, Phar. :)
Varda Valar (23:37:38):    How about loyatly of their men?
Varda Valar (23:37:54):    *loyalty
Arien V (23:38:26):    ((just to clarify .. you mean Aye, as in correct and her name was Finduilas :) not as once upon a time mysel was known :) ))
Varda Valar (23:38:57):    Right.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:39:04):    That'd be a really odd time to revert to your earlier name.
Arien V (23:39:18):    indee
Varda Valar (23:39:24):    You'd have to call me Faramir. :)
Arien V (23:39:30):    :)
Varda Valar (23:39:39):    1997 name.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:39:46):    So Arien's Varda's mother!
Varda Valar (23:39:56):    Tricky!
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:39:55):    *mind blown*
Varda Valar (23:40:13):    Hi Mom!
Arien V (23:40:23):    hi lil one !
Varda Valar (23:40:39):    Happy upcoming Mother's Day!
Varda Valar (23:41:14):    Do we know any other characters that had similar roles but we don't think of as clones?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:42:02):    Merry and Pippin? :)
Varda Valar (23:42:29):    How were they similar yet different?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:42:49):    Both accompanying Frodo, distracting orcs, getting kidnapped by orcs, rousing trees, pledging loyalty to one ruler or other, and attempting to join in the action!
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:43:12):    And becoming the leaders of their families in the end.
Varda Valar (23:43:16):    Both doing at least one great warrior deed.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:44:00):    Both rescuing a life of a friend they'd met who's part of the armed force they joined.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:44:20):    *saving the life, rescuing a life sounds redundant
Varda Valar (23:44:49):    So, why didn't JRRT just make them one person, combining the characters?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:45:12):    2 kingdoms to pledge loyalty to? ;)
Varda Valar (23:45:23):    Aye, definitely a reason.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:45:49):    Also, they had somewhat different personalities and supplemented each other in different ways.
Varda Valar (23:46:00):    They needed to work on different areas of the war, caused all sorts of long-lasting actions.
Varda Valar (23:46:27):    Also, they made a good decoy - two two-hobbit teams running in different directions.
Varda Valar (23:46:41):    All four coming out of the Shire.
Varda Valar (23:47:06):    They had all been at Bag End with Frodo, before Merry left to set up Crickhollow.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:47:09):    And like the cup-game... the real Ringbearer was under neither cup but already well on his way to Mordor :)
Varda Valar (23:47:16):    Aye.
Varda Valar (23:47:50):    In each case, one seemed senior to the other. Master and gardener, older and younger to be cared for.
Varda Valar (23:48:21):    Both pairs had one that took care of the other.
Varda Valar (23:48:53):    So what were the different ways the two affected the war?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:48:53):    In both cases, they need to be separated for a short while for the junior one to really shine.
Varda Valar (23:49:03):    Right
Varda Valar (23:49:25):    Sam showed the right stuff when he thought Frodo was dead.
Varda Valar (23:50:00):    Pippin was separated from Merry after the Palantir and then even separated from Gandalf. He had to learn.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:50:29):    As for your other question, the main influences they had was that Merry assisted in the slaying of the Witch-king, while Pippin was crucial in saving Faramir's life.
Varda Valar (23:50:33):    All four returned as leaders in their own right, able to stand alone.
Varda Valar (23:50:45):    Aye.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:50:58):    And then Faramir and Eowyn ended up together... kind of full circle.
Varda Valar (23:51:07):    Aye. :)
Varda Valar (23:51:44):    That got the main points I was after, if we would like to switch to After-meeting?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:52:00):    No other examples we can think of?
Varda Valar (23:52:20):    Oh, we could probably keep going all week, since the chat room stays open. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:52:25):    hehe, true
Varda Valar (23:54:21):    *picks up a delicate-looking hammer, gingerly*
Varda Valar (23:54:30):    *zinnnnnng!*
Arien V (23:54:56):    nice sound :)
Varda Valar (23:55:13):    *it flies like a bee (yay Valie wrists) and dives into the hammerpad, making that interesting noise*
Varda Valar (23:55:44):    *released, it returns even more quickly to the shelf conveyor belt and is lost to our sight*
Arien V (23:55:44):    *sparkles golden in sudden sunlight*
top

Varda Valar (23:55:49):    After-meeting!
Varda Valar (23:56:37):    *o look! We all are golden-colored! Wonders how long it will last.*
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:57:06):    Shiny!
Varda Valar (23:57:23):    Ar-Pharazon the Reallly Golden
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:57:31):    Yes! At last!
Monday, May 8, 2017
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:53:08):    Personal gaming report!

Ar-Pharazon-V (00:53:27):    Gathering up some flashy games.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:57:41):    http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/physics_drop is the first one! Draw and push platforms to get the ball into the hoop/arch/basket thing.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:58:07):    You can draw as much as you want, so the only way to really fail is if you draw yourself into an impossible position :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:09:52):    http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/synchronicity is the second game, an atmospheric platformer where you move 2 characters at the same time, and have to reach the right platforms and buttons to get them to the exits without one drowning in the water. Nice music too.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:10:04):    Bit short though.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:16:34):    http://www.kongregate.com/games/mmx95/reach-the-core is the third. An upgrade game where you have to mine deeper into a planet, collecting resources and earning achievements to be able to go further, and ultimately even jump to another planet. Enjoy!

Ar-Pharazon-V (01:21:29):    Blizzard gaming!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:23:13):    Heroes of the Storm: A few more levels, 184 now total. Got Gazlowe to level 15, the goal for all my heroes (though you can go on infinitely now in 2.0, and every level after 12 requires the same experience) to get their master portraits, so I started on another Warcraft specialist hero. Ultimately chose Sylvanas, should be fun.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:23:59):    I found a guide on when to reroll chests with some good math behind it as far as I've checked, for those interested it's at https://www.tentonhammer.com/guides/heroes-of-the-storm-how-to-reroll-chests
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:25:27):    On similar advice I've also bought every hero remaining at 7000 gold or lower, since the shards you'd get for duplicates are apparently worth more than the 7k. So my repertoire of heroes is getting quite large, I'm lacking only the 10k and 15k heroes now.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:28:29):    Still I'm only keeping one hero per franchise/role combination active, but at least I won't have to buy anything for a while ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:29:38):    The heroes brawl this week is a new one, based on the new payload-map. Random heroes, one team escorting the payload to its destination and the other team defending, trying to delay the payload until the timer runs out.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:30:16):    I lost the escort once, won the defense once, then won the offense once, so I got out pretty good. Still, only 3 games needed to be played, so winning wasn't even necessary :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:30:53):    Also still working on the promotion quests, which for the last 3 weeks require pvp matches with a friend rather than just vs AI matches with a friend. So it's rather more annoying. Still, only 5 matches a week required.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:32:40):    Hearthstone: Still pushing forward bit by bit, doing some quests, opening some packs. Still got a large inventory of card packs waiting to be opened, but I have a policy to open 6 for every pack I buy, so I'll get there soon enough ;) Currently opening some Old Gods packs, interesting cards in there, and still useable in standard mode too.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:33:00):    This week's brawl is a heroic arena, expensive with high rewards. Not for me.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:35:33):    Diablo 3: Continuing the season, done 4 bounty acts now and gotten my crusader to level.. 28, I think. She's progressing nicely. Got a new pet from a Menagerist treasure goblin, a flaming skull following me around. One day I hope to get the mimic treasure chest pet from one, that's my favorite from the list.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:38:14):    Afk a bit, will give my WoW report a bit later :)
Arien V (02:28:26):    Namarie for no :) i am going to read your report later :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:28:29):    WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:28:31):    Namarie!
Arien V (02:28:34):    for now even
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:29:28):    Northrend raiding's indeed a lot faster now that we can skip most bosses in Trial of the Crusader and ulduar! We only got a single new pet from Sindragosa, though. Still, it's something.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:30:39):    For the current raids, we're still doing heroic Nighthold. Got my third quest item from Elisande, 1 to go. A couple of new appearances unlocked from there, too.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:31:45):    I didn't do much for children's week, as there have been no changes and I've already got the pets and toys. As fun as it is to drag Dornaa through the most dangerous environments, I preferred to focus on other stuff.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:32:51):    This week's weekly quest is/was battlegrounds, win 4. I threw myself into some alterac valleys and isles of conquest because they don't require much individual skill ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:33:57):    Good for honor and marks (of honor), I'm nearing my second prestige now, which should unlock the first pvp artifact appearance, and for the marks I'm now halfway to my first arsenal set. Some way to go, but nice to see it build up.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:35:12):    Got some new pets on friday! Finally finished Family Familiar, defeating 12 out of 15 pet masters with pets from each pet family. I'd still like to do all 15, and am still keeping track of what I'm missing, but the achievement is done.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:35:33):    As a result I got a nice little Nightmare Treant, a bit spooky :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:36:26):    The other pet I got, I bought from the black market auction house, an old TCG-only pet which really fits my race and class: the hippogryph hatchling!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:36:43):    Cost me nearly 140k gold, but worth it for the little guy.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:39:40):    More work on Suramar! Finally finished the main part of the Good Suramaritan story achievement, with only the side-arcs left. There appears to be some bugginess and disruption between side-arcs and smaller side-questlines, but with some reading up on websites I compiled a good order to do them in, and am working my way down. But the main part is over, which means we've got a nice Arcan'dor tree, all the Nightfallen have stopped being withered, and I no longer have to feed the npcs mana to talk to them. It's looking really nice, too :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:41:09):    Finally, old appearances!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:41:51):    After a long long time of weekly farming, I got the last item from Ahn'Qiraj on wednesday, a staff from the first boss.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:42:47):    I now have every appearance my druid can get from classic/vanilla raids and instances, and can focus on the Burning Crusade instances 7 days a week from here on.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:43:52):    I cleared normal and heroic Shadow Labyrinth in BC, and have now moved on to Escape from Durnholde, also known as Old Hillsbrad Foothills. In other words, the rescuing Thrall scenario.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:44:05):    Since I'm currently also re-reading Lord of the Clans, it all looks very familiar :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:45:44):    That instance is rather unique in that there are things to be gotten from other sources than bosses; I already found a vendor which sold me some missing starter-shirt appearances I did not have. There's also a mob that drops a hat-toy, but that can only be done on heroic difficulty. So I'll have to keep that in mind when I'm done with normal.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:46:17):    But so far I've gotten 2 out of 5 missing items from normal difficulty (shirts not included) so it shouldn't be long until I can start heroic.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:47:02):    And that's my report for the week!
Elladan (02:47:12):    Bedtime for me. Night! Namarie! Nice reports!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:47:13):    Namarie!
Varda Valar (03:00:36):    back
Varda Valar (03:00:39):    Namarie
Ar-Pharazon-V (04:12:56):    Let's make a transcript!
