Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya!
Eonwe Valar: Thanks for catching it, Phar. Will correct it on the Games Site. [Note: also corrected above.]
Ar-Pharazon-V: Sure :-)
Eonwe Valar: And heya Elladan :}
Arien V: aiya Elladan?
Arien V: :-)
Scott Lombardi: is that a question? :-)
Eonwe Valar: Ok, Games Site corrected.
Scott Lombardi: Minas Tirith is NOT very fun to navigate, btw
Eonwe Valar: Any other gaming News before we move to Tolkien?
Eonwe Valar: I need to head out early today, but I will be providing a discussion topic before I do, and leaving Tolkine chat in Arien's capable hands :}
Eonwe Valar: *the Tolkien chat too
Ar-Pharazon-V: okidoki

Eonwe Valar: Tolkien:
Eonwe Valar: I saw the Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug on tv the other day, and caught the part where Legolas and the Elves of Mirkwood come upon Thorin and Company.
Eonwe Valar: As I watched Legolas stand there and insult Gloin and his family to Gloin's face, I stood there thinking, "Wow, that's pretty bad, two people who'd never met before, and that's how Legolas decides to make conversation."
Scott Lombardi: heh
Eonwe Valar: I had to wonder what in the past would've warranted such hostility, and I got to thinking about what Gandalf said at the Council:
Arien V: i cant remember the scene ...
Ar-Pharazon-V: Nor can I, but I do remember the movie scene between Eomer and the dwarf/elf/ranger party on the fields of Rohan, and that wasn't very friendly either.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Just seems to be an atmosphere or hostility going on.
Eonwe Valar: Paraphrase:"If all the grievances between Elves and Dwarves are to be named here, we will be here a long time." (Couldn't find the exact quote in time for the meeting, sorry)
Eonwe Valar: For the movie scene I'm talking about, it's the part where the Elves are disarming the Dwarves. Legolas looks at a picture Gloin carries and says with a discusted look "Who is this, your brother?" to which Gloin replies, "That's my wife."
Eonwe Valar: Then again, the other picture and says "And is this some sort of goblin mutant?" and Gloin says, "That's my son Gimli."
Ar-Pharazon-V: I wonder if Legolas ever told Gimli that story.
Eonwe Valar: The first line might be forgiven (since it's said Dwarven women are hard to tell from the men for outside races) if not for it being obvious Legolas was going for the insult.
Eonwe Valar: But anyway, all that backdrop to set for my topic:
Eonwe Valar: *set forth
Eonwe Valar: What are the grievances between Elves and Dwarves, that we are privied to in the history of Arda, such that the level of incivility of Legolas towards Gloin would be warranted in someone's eyes?
Eonwe Valar: And with that, I turn the chat and the gavel over to Arien.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, as long as we're going movie-only, I suppose there was something going on at Erebor in the prologue of the trilogy :-P
Eonwe Valar: Might be interesting to name what we know from the books, and from the movie (distinguishing between the two of course) but I leave it to Arien :}
Eonwe Valar: Time for me to get moving :} Take care all and have fun :}
Scott Lombardi: Cya! :-)
Arien V: ok have  fun at work :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
Arien V: namarie!
Eonwe Valar (Eonwe Valar) has left the room.
Arien V: now then . what grievances are there between Dwarvesand Elves that we can come up with?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, some of the first appearances in the Silmarillion has them working for the sons of Feanor, that wouldn't sit well with most of Beleriand.
Scott Lombardi: good point
Ar-Pharazon-V: Then there's a couple of petty dwarves going around, though I don't think they had much dealings with the Elves that we know of... [Note: Beleg.]
Ar-Pharazon-V: Then there's the Nauglafring business.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Nauglamir?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Not sure what's the old and what's the canon name.
Arien V: Nauglamir i seem ito have in mind
Ar-Pharazon-V: That's what you get when you read Lost Tales before the Silmarillion. Some name preferences never go away.
Ar-Pharazon-V: That history was the main thing, really. Dwarves cut down the leadership of Doriath, Beren takes revenge, and from then on it's just self-perpetuating hostility right down to the War of the Ring.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Well, and Five Armies.
Arien V: both peoples were after treasures as far as i know
Arien V: so there was rivalry there
Ar-Pharazon-V: Greed, such a wonderful thing.
Arien V: glittering jewels , gold , even smaking weapons . there was great competition going on
Arien V: because of that they often live in the same area and for that reason they might cross each other terrirtories in one way or another
Ar-Pharazon-V: Sounds about right.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Also, both sides preferred to live in caves. So maybe there was a competition for the nicest cavern :-)
Arien V: hmm Eol if i remember befriended dwarves of some kind right?
Ar-Pharazon-V: I think so. Got some weapons made?
Arien V: his sword .. wasnt that dwarfmade?
Ar-Pharazon-V: I do recall that, yes.
Ar-Pharazon-V: It helps to be friends with master craftsmen.
Arien V: what was the name of that sword again?
Arien V: Angrainael or something like that?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Anguriel? Anguirel?
Arien V: Anglachel ^^
Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh! He's got two.
Arien V: had to look it up .. but we went both in the same direction
Arien V: the name means "iron flame*
Ar-Pharazon-V: Looking it up, it seems Anglachel came into Turin's hands, but Eol kept Anguirel for himself.
Arien V: ah yes twin blades
Arien V: Anglachel and Anguirel
Arien V: so yes given this rivalry of the land , to go back to that , it really was special that Celeborn admitted Gloin into Lothlorien and even took off they blindfolds lateron
Ar-Pharazon-V: He did have people vouching for him.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Including a fellow Sindar.
Arien V: eh well you know what i mean  :-) yes . but then at .. Cerin Amroth they were allowed to take off the blindfolds
Ar-Pharazon-V: Better that way anyway. Less easy to stub your toe against any old tree root.
Arien V: but it was also a symbolic gesture
Arien V: i think anyway
Ar-Pharazon-V: It's funny though. You'd think things would be a bit more amiable after the Battle of Five Armies, but they were still being hostile.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Some habits...
Arien V: i also think ... Cerin Amroth a hill sudded with Elanor and Niphredil and clearly a place .of romantic significance to Aragorn .. just a sidethought
Arien V: yes well if we think of the events preceding the battle of five armies
Arien V: The Elven king wanted the Nauglamir back ... the people of Esgaroth part of the treasure to rebuild after the dragons 's distruction and the Arkenjewel smuggled out by a certain burglar ..
Arien V: destruction .. my typing has been better befor .. my bad
Ar-Pharazon-V: Wanted the Nauglamir back? That's movie-only, right? :-)
Arien V: well i am not sur .. hang on
Scott Lombardi: I'm here. Sorry not so chatty. been busy
Arien V: cant find anything about why the Elvenking joined battle with the men
Ar-Pharazon-V: Possibly to make sure the goblins didn't win.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Or.. no, they already joined before then, didn't they?
Arien V: might have been because they were asked for aid by the people of Esgaroth and as they learned about the dwarvwes in the old halls they went with them mayby out of pity , maybe out of hope they d get something out of it
Ar-Pharazon-V: Maybe it's to get back at the rascal dwarves who escaped their dungeons?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Yeah, that's possible. Lot of treasure to be got.
Ar-Pharazon-V: And as we established, the Elves also liked treasure!
Arien V: get *payment for the hospitalitygranted"?
Arien V: food and drink spent on the captive dwarves?
Ar-Pharazon-V: Heh, as if they were there voluntarily.
Arien V: *gins indeed*
Arien V: well I cant think of any more specific grudges
Ar-Pharazon-V: Disrupting their forest picnics.
Arien V: all that started from the impatience of a Valar
Arien V: yes indeed
Arien V: Yavanne predicted the enmity between Elves and dwarvesbecause the dwarves needed firewood for their forges
Arien V: I quote the passage from the Silmarillion as closing thought:
Ar-Pharazon-V: I thought that's why she created Ents.
Arien V: *Now when Aule laboured in the making of the Dwarves , he kept this work hidden from the other Valar, but at last he openened his heart to Yavanne and told her of all that had come to pass. *Now indeed I see that they heart rejoiceth as indeed it may, but thoou hast received not only forgiveness but bounty. Yet because thou hiddest this thought afore me until its achievement, thy children will have little love for the things of my love. They will love first the things made of their own hands, like their father. They will delve in the earth, and the things that grow and live upon the earth they will not heed. Many a tree shall feel the bite of their axes without pity. "
Arien V: And .. as you mentioned Phari
Ar-Pharazon-V: Right. Doesn't mention the Elves?
Arien V: uh,, right just noticed .. sorry that must be in the music then wrong chapterthen
Arien V: pardon me
Arien V: ah its before that in the same chapter
Arien V: i think
Arien V: *But when the time comes I shall awaken them and to thee they shall be as children , and often strife will arise between mine and thine
Arien V: the children of my adopition and the children of my choice>"
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah, yes.
Scott Lombardi: Dinner time for me, kin. Thanks for the great discussion. I actually learned quite a bit tonight :-) Namarie!
Arien V: Namarie :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
Arien V: *lets rays shine in that cave their . uh .. shiny!
Scott Lombardi (Scott92027) has left the room.
Arien V: *picks gavel made of gold witrh jewels on handel and bangs against golden kettle*
Arien V: *deeb booong*

Arien V: Aftermeeting!
Arien V: ..right .. i ll be heading into Irmos realm ... i am looking forwardto my blanketsandmy bed ;-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
Ar-Pharazon-V: I'll.. give my gaming report to an empty room then?
Arien V: i can leave the window open :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Sure, why not :-)

Arien V: oh yeah personal gaming shortly :
WoW:
Arien V: i did venture into lfr Nightspire, the third pat of the Nighthold
Ar-Pharazon-V: Yay!
Arien V: facing Tichondrius , Krosus and Grand Magister Elisande
Ar-Pharazon-V: Ah, those can be complicated fights. But fun!
Ar-Pharazon-V: I actually tanked Elisande in normal for the first time tonight, only remembering during the fight that I'd not tanked her before. It made things interesting...
Arien V: love the design of the instance :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: "..What do I do now?"
Arien V: hehe yes i can imagine .. luckily we had a fairly capable group there
Arien V: the raid leader did actually mention the most importan t things even for tanks
Arien V: unfortunatley groups are not always like that .. else i d enjoy the raidfinder more :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Yes, well, I was supposed to know them, as others in my group had done it before, and I'd dps'd it too.
perseid28 has entered the room.
Ar-Pharazon-V: But with lack of personal experience, and directed instructions, improvising became a bit necessary.

Arien V: Aiya Lenwe :-)
perseid28: Aiya Arien and Phar :)
perseid28: After meeting?
Arien V: yes it is aftermeeting and just starting on personal gaming .. Varda is at a funeral and Eonwe was leading up to Tolkien topic
Ar-Pharazon-V: Aiya!
Arien V: the topic was grievances between Dwarves and Elves
Arien V: he had to leave early for work
perseid28: Neat, I look forward to reading the transcript on that :)

Arien V: on Lotro i have tried again to get to the right spot you described sohelpfully buti fell down times and again or seemed to miss the rightspot despite the map told me i was right .either too far down or too far up and sliding over the edge .. just horrible .. and the one time i did find the right spot i didnrt see the branches first and when iclicked i walked right into hem and lostt them promptly out of sight
Arien V: it justdoesnt like me ^^
perseid28: Which spot are you referring to?
Arien V: above the fallen brances
Arien V: for the Old roots quest
Arien V: given up on that .. i havent abandoned it yet but i think i ll just try and find the next quest hub
Arien V: if i can get there without finishing that
perseid28: Ah. I don't recall that one, but seems others have had a similar frustration https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?512679-Old-Roots
perseid28: my sympathies :(
Arien V: that s my gaming reportdone
Arien V: if you have anything Lenwe go on :-)
Arien V: if thats okay with you Phari?

perseid28: Thanks, it's short :) For LotRO, I've been working my Beorning toward level cap; he's at 98 now I believe. I'm planning to use him in group instances with Guild members and in other groups.
perseid28: I've also started writing up some LotRO knowledge: http://neutrino.ninja/lotro/
Ar-Pharazon-V: Sure, go ahead :-)
perseid28: Short articles for things I get asked periodically in-game; I plan to put some links to bigger articles on the LotRO wiki in the future
perseid28: Hopefully someone will find it helpful ;) Anyway, that's my week.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Right, I'll start my report then :-)
Arien V: cool Lenwe thank you
Arien V: Go ahead Phari :-)

Ar-Pharazon-V: Right, starting with some flashgames I've played this week and will link to you...
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/smash_city has you as a blocky monster walking around town and smashing buildings, try to get as many stars and as money as possible before the army overwhelms you. Small game, primarily made for mobile as well it seems.. I've not yet figured out if you can use the money for anything.
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/mr_miner is a mining simulator, mine stuff, upgrade your equipment, and move to more expensive worlds when you can afford them. Fun and cute :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: And for the third one I'll give a bit of an older, small game. Tetris, but different...
Ar-Pharazon-V: http://www.kongregate.com/games/WeirdBeardGames/99-bricks Build a tower as high as possible, using up to 99 pieces! What pieces you get is random, and you'll find it difficult to balance the entire thing.

Ar-Pharazon-V: Blizzard games!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Hearthstone: I figured some classes would hit the next level this week. They haven't. But all of them have caught up to each other now, and one of them's on the very edge, so I can't imagine it not happening next week.
Ar-Pharazon-V: The brawl was an old one: Choose a class, get a fixed number of some random legendaries in your deck. Very random, but depending on which ones you choose to make less expensive, with special cards, there is still skill involved.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Heroes of the Storm: At 14 games with Warcraft heroes now, so almost there. Still got plenty of time, but I decided to get some non-warcraft quests out of the way.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Gul'dan reached level 7 this week, got a new skin-variation, but I prefer the old colors.
Ar-Pharazon-V: A new brawl for that game this week, a single-lane match on the Braxis Holdout map. Played 3 brawls myself for the portrait, just happened to win all 3; one of them was with 5 Tracers against 5 Tracers. I'd never played Tracer before, but it made for an interesting game.
Ar-Pharazon-V: WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V: Love is in the Air event is over now, and I managed to get both new toys.
Ar-Pharazon-V: There was also a micro-holiday, the hatching of the hippogryphs, but I kinda forgot about it and only found out the next day. No permanent rewards I missed, but there was the chance to have a hatchling on your shoulder for 5 days. Oh well, next year!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Weekly quest this week is/was arena skirmishes, winning 10 of them. Took quite a while to get there, but I did get it and ended up at honor level 20 on Prestige level 1. So that's something.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Finally did the archeology quest too, getting the Spirit of Eche'ro mount!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Lessee...
Ar-Pharazon-V: raid-wise, I finally got to kill Gul'dan on normal for the first time. Complete with cinematic and achievement.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Quite impressive, though lore-wise it runs ahead on some of my questing progress, especially the Illidan thing :-)
Arien V: nice one :-)
Arien V: did you get Suramaritian too?
Ar-Pharazon-V: No. My questing is rather behind on that matter. I'm only near the start of that achievement.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Too much doing world quests and other stuff, y'know :-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Withered training is pretty much complete when it comes to advancing my Withered, though. I managed to grab almost every chest remaining on thursday, leaving me just needing to get the one that was locked in the north-east corner, requiring 2 berserkers (which I'd only unlocked on thursday). But I got that one too tonight, so the only thing missing now is the missing toys from the reward chest!
Ar-Pharazon-V: Which makes future runs a lot easier, since i just need to get 400 points and get to the end.
Ar-Pharazon-V: I did clear out the place entirely today, though, getting me 721 points. Should be around the maximum, depending on how many of your webbed victims turn out to be hostile.
Ar-Pharazon-V: I got a new pet from our older Northrend raids, getting the snaplasher from Freya. On that same night, we finally got the Onyxia mount to drop, which went to one of the others in the party, but if we get 2 more we'll all be set ;-)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Appearance-wise, not much progress. A few items in Heroic Underbog, which just leaves one from there. It's a nice place to visit, though, so I don't mind much.
Ar-Pharazon-V: Oh, and for world quests, I got another rank 3 leatherworking recipe. I also tried to farm one from a sea giant mob with a near instant respawn, but the droprate is still very very low. So I gave up on it after a while, will return later on when I can probably kill it even faster.
Ar-Pharazon-V: And that's my report for this week!

Disconnected.

perseid28: Nope, nothing between the leaving and coming back :)
Ar-Pharazon-V: Alright.
Arien V: i I have made that blooming quest :D#
Arien V: finally
Ar-Pharazon-V: Grats!

Varda Valar: Aiya
Ar-Pharazon-V: Yay, Heroes of the Storm quest done, mount got in both Heroes of the Storm and WoW :-)

Varda Valar: Grats :-)
Arien V: welcome back
Ar-Pharazon-V: Thanks :-)
Varda Valar: Thank you

Arien V: i actually wanted to go to bed when we were finished but Lenwe sort of convinced me to have another go at this old roots quest and gave me the forum links .. which i followed and read and finally made it
perseid28: Aiya Varda :)
Arien V: Namarie all now .. time to bed this time really and thanks again Lenwe :-)
perseid28: No problem, glad it worked!
perseid28: Namarie
Ar-Pharazon-V: Namarie!
Arien V (AriehnV) has left the room.
Varda Valar: Grats to Arien. Glad she got past that spot. Not an easy one.
perseid28: I don't recall doing that quest, I'm sure I must have at some point...
Varda Valar: Long ago, probably
Varda Valar: Are the links in the transcript? Might also help someone else
perseid28: They are
Varda Valar: Thank you. :-)

How did they show appreciation in Middle-earth and beyond?
