Before-meeting
(times for Ar-Pharazon in the Netherlands)

Eonwe Valar (16:08:52):    Ok Games Site v9.1 is out. If all works as it should, you won't notice what's been updated unless you have a seriously good memory and a Holmes-ian attention to detail.
Eonwe Valar (16:09:08):    Or you read the Games Site news, heh.
Varda Valar (21:40:56):    Read? What a concept!
Ar-Pharazon-V (21:42:03):    Ain't nobody got time for reading.
Varda Valar (21:43:13):    hehe - keep hearing that. Funny what people do have time for, instead though.
Ar-Pharazon-V (21:43:33):    *fights raidboss* nothing unimportant, I'm sure
Varda Valar (21:44:59):    Unimportant is relative. ;)
Eonwe Valar (22:57:11):    Heya All :}
Varda Valar (22:57:17):    Aiya Eonwe :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (22:57:18):    Aiya!

Ar-Pharazon-V (23:12:12):    Oh, one question about Discord.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:12:20):    I couldn't find a way to set audio alerts when someone speaks in the channel.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:12:48):    Or.. any notification, really.
Varda Valar (23:13:10):    Normally we just hear them speak.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:13:13):    I mean, type :)
Varda Valar (23:13:22):    We all pop into Text Harbor and Voice Harbor.
Varda Valar (23:14:23):    Can be a pop up on the bottom right of the screen, rather like AIM
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:14:31):    It wasn't.
Varda Valar (23:14:36):    So you can read it while still in-game
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:16:14):    Logging in to see.
Varda Valar (23:16:46):    Maybe it's a setting I need to work on.
Eonwe Valar (23:16:55):    Ok, let's give it something to try and display then :}

Varda Valar (23:18:53):    Was just messing with some. Whisper me to let me know if you see something that would help. AIM is fine
Eonwe Valar (23:20:40):    Since December 14th, 2003, the Valar Guild has been holding our weekly meetings on AIM in an effort to unite our members across games.
Eonwe Valar (23:21:39):    Before that, we met on Blizzard's Battle.net service, which required members to own one of Blizzard's online games at the time.
Varda Valar (23:22:21):    (right click server pic on the left for Notifications)
Eonwe Valar (23:22:28):    For a solid 13 years of service in giving us a place to meet, thank you to the AIM team :}

Ar-Pharazon-V (23:24:31):    Welcome!
Eonwe Valar (23:25:08):    If he's available to say a few words and have those transmitted to us on AIM, that'd be great :}

Ar-Pharazon-V (23:31:05):    Last week I think.
Arien V (23:31:29):    There is another newcomer isnt there? Aranuir?
GwaihirValar (23:31:29):    good afternoon friends - streaming atm so can't talk much... but was wondering if I could grab a link to the discord
Eonwe Valar (23:31:33):    Aye, two weeks ago is when she joined, and I recall her being mentioned :}
Varda Valar (23:31:36):    She joined Nov 24, ahh good. She's been back, as promised, for December.
Varda Valar (23:31:46):    Aiya Gwaihir!
Varda Valar (23:31:48):    sure
Eonwe Valar (23:31:48):    Heya Gwaihir :}
Arien V (23:32:08):    aiya Gwaihir :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:32:06):    Aiya Gwai :)
Varda Valar (23:32:12):    https://discordapp.com/
Varda Valar (23:32:28):    -
Varda Valar (23:32:36):    That's today's code
Varda Valar (23:32:56):    My friend name is -
Varda Valar (23:33:05):    That will not be in the transcript. ;)
GwaihirValar (23:33:12):    thank you
Varda Valar (23:33:20):    Be happy to see you there. :)
Varda Valar (23:33:27):    xxxxxxxxxxxx
Varda Valar (23:33:30):    pardon
Eonwe Valar (23:33:47):    :}
GwaihirValar (23:33:47):    I've had discord for ages, so glad to see us utilizing it. It's a very efficient place to keep in touch.
Varda Valar (23:34:03):    Agreed :)
GwaihirValar (23:34:30):    Seluhir is the name I go by in most places, including discord... -
Varda Valar (23:34:43):    Thank you
Varda Valar (23:35:25):    The most elite Samurai took you the friend request.
Varda Valar (23:35:31):    Thanks! That was fast.
Eonwe Valar (23:35:33):    hehe
Eonwe Valar (23:35:53):    Those little blurbs do make Discord amusing, I'll give it that.
Varda Valar (23:36:15):    Server invite sent
top

Eonwe Valar (23:36:51):    Web:
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:37:10):    I thought about signing up on Discord as Calaron, but I figure it's just meant for valarguild stuff anyway.
Varda Valar (23:37:37):    You can have a different name for different servers, if permission is given.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:37:59):    Good to know in case I ever use it for something else :)
Eonwe Valar (23:38:08):    :}
Eonwe Valar (23:38:42):    So it sounds like there's no reason to not have guild names on display on the guild server? :}
Varda Valar (23:39:25):    On our personal server, you can set your name to your guild name.
Varda Valar (23:39:47):    With permission from a server, you can change your name for any one of them to something they recognize.
Eonwe Valar (23:39:55):    Then that is good :}

Eonwe Valar (23:41:16):    An update to the Games Site went live this morning. Some changes on the back end were made. On the front end, most noticable (and still barely noticable) would be the adjustments to image URLs to more closely align with the page they're from.
Eonwe Valar (23:43:04):    Since the Games Site is not an image hosting site or an art site, and people should only be getting to these images through the Games Site anyway, I decided I wasn't too concerned about rerouting the broken old direct links to images in this case.
Varda Valar (23:43:04):    Aranuir-Today at 4:42 PM
...cool
Eonwe Valar (23:43:59):    So if for some reason you did have a link directly to one of our Events images, for example, it's time to go get a new link from that Event's page :}
Varda Valar (23:44:52):    Thanks
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:45:20):    Awkward past transcripts ;)
Eonwe Valar (23:45:59):    I don't "image"ine it'll break too much :}
Eonwe Valar (23:47:05):    Pretty sure I didn't link directly to any events images in a meeting, just the page for that event.
Eonwe Valar (23:47:26):    If you do see any broken image links on the Games Site itself though, please let me know :}
Eonwe Valar (23:48:09):    Any other web news?
Varda Valar (23:50:55):    Hope to have a new nazgul pic up in the future, needs straightened somehow
Eonwe Valar (23:51:03):    Cool :}

Monday, December 11, 2017
Eonwe Valar (00:00:11):    Ok, on to....
top

Eonwe Valar (00:00:17):    Tolkien:
Eonwe Valar (00:01:02):    Our final Tolkien topic for AIM is brought to you by Varda :}
Varda Valar (00:01:36):    Aranuir had to leave, sorry.
Eonwe Valar (00:01:48):    No worries.
Varda Valar (00:02:21):    Beorn's animals were strangely intelligent. Also, many bears came from all over while the Company was at his house, guarding. Were they all mere animals? Could any have been skin-changers?
Eonwe Valar (00:04:01):    The bears guarding I suppose are possible, since they're observed from afar, but the animals actually in his household? Would be kinda strange if they were and we got no mention of it.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:03:59):    I assumed that being a skin-changer, Beorn simply had a unique access to communication with normal animals, and could explain or teach them things.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:04:30):    But the guarding bears might be relatives of his, yes.
Eonwe Valar (00:05:15):    Seems to me alot of work to go through to set our plates with hooves, if they could've just appeared as people and done it more easily.
Eonwe Valar (00:05:21):    *set out
Varda Valar (00:05:37):    There's some argument about whether Beorn was the only one able to be a skin-changer. But we don't know how he became one or if that happened to a lot.
Varda Valar (00:05:59):    Maybe only a few survived. And it may or may not have been genetic afterwards.
Varda Valar (00:06:24):    We know JRRT was fond of Scandinavian mythology, however.
Varda Valar (00:06:53):    Good point about the hooves, unless they were trying to be disguised, which seems unlikely.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:08:14):    It'd spoil the mood if they were in human shape :)
Varda Valar (00:08:25):    hehe
Eonwe Valar (00:09:12):    The way Tolkien wrote it, it seems to me that the surprise was that they were animals doing "people things," not "people in animal shape doing people things," so I doubt from Tolkien's perspective at least they were intended to be in Beorn's league.
Eonwe Valar (00:10:23):    From Bilbo's perspective, he probably would've reasoned about how we're reasoning: that it'd be odd to do these things in animal form if people form could get them done easier :}
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:10:36):    people in animal form doing animal doing people things?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:11:47):    Maybe it's a secluded race of skinchangers that doesn't want to be exposed and hunted down, so Beorn drew the short straw and had to do all the interacting with humanoid races while the others could hide in their animal forms whenever visitors showed up?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:11:58):    It's possible ;)
Eonwe Valar (00:12:07):    hehe, there is that :}
Varda Valar (00:12:11):    I kind've had that thought too.
Varda Valar (00:13:09):    The obvious answer is that the book was intended with a young audience in mind and these were some of the early "furries" in literature.
Varda Valar (00:16:26):    Making sure what the book version was for Beorn, (and note that The Hobbit has no index), Beorn came alone to the Battle of Five Armies,not carried by an eagle, and made his attack, killing Bolg amongst other things.
Eonwe Valar (00:16:29):    I doubt know. They don't seem to be particularly anthropomorphized.
Arien V (00:16:57):    hmnmmm that would make them almost Centaurs aye?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:17:50):    I would've loved to see Beorn carried by an eagle. Is it in the movie? Still haven't seen part 3 yet ;)
Varda Valar (00:18:20):    *goes quiet*
Eonwe Valar (00:18:22):    I forget, but eagles dropping giant bears on the battlefield does sound dangerous :}
Eonwe Valar (00:18:33):    For the enemy :}
Arien V (00:18:34):    i hope i get the extended version for christmas :) wonders me that i still dont have it heehe
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:18:50):    I don't mind spoilers, Varda. Never did.
Eonwe Valar (00:18:58):    I may have to make time to watch them again on vacation.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:19:00):    I watch every WoW cutscene as it shows up on MMO champ.
Varda Valar (00:19:20):    Yes, we had a Beorn bomb. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:19:24):    If Beorn's carried by an eagle you're free to te- ah, excellent :D
Eonwe Valar (00:19:29):    hehe
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:19:28):    Can't wait to see it!
Arien V (00:19:32):    *chuckles*
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:19:58):    Or I can just go to youtube ;)
Varda Valar (00:20:39):    That would be not waiting, aye.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:21:30):    Awwww, he's riding one in man-shape and shifting mid-fall... while spectacular, beardrop would've been more fun :D
Eonwe Valar (00:21:42):    hehe

Eonwe Valar (00:22:38):    Any more on the topic, or shall we bang the gavel here? :}
Eonwe Valar (00:24:12):    *Raises gavel into the air*
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:25:02):    The gavel swing that broke AIM.
Eonwe Valar (00:25:11):    *Bangs gavel with finality*
Arien V (00:25:17):    *shines sunbeams on the gavel*

Eonwe Valar (00:25:28):    Aftermeeting:
Eonwe Valar (00:25:52):    The night falls on AIM, but the dawn will rise next week in Discord.
Arien V (00:26:20):    well its there another five days :)
Eonwe Valar (00:26:27):    Thank you again to the AIM team, and thank you all, members of the Valar Guild, for coming to meetings and joining us here for these last 14 years :}
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:26:46):    Victory of Discord. http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Discord
Arien V (00:26:54):    8 years .. 8 years for me
Varda Valar (00:26:54):    Thank you all for many great years here. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:26:54):    And thank you AIM :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:27:01):    Yep, I remember the bnet times.
Eonwe Valar (00:27:07):    I will still be in AIM during my normal hours until Friday, just in case there are some stragglers to get into Discord, and because I want to, hehe.
Arien V (00:27:22):    yes thank you aim
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:27:50):    Have I really been here longer than 14 years?
Eonwe Valar (00:28:00):    Looks like it :}
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:27:58):    Can't have been much longer.
Eonwe Valar (00:28:35):    October 4th, 2003. A couple of months before we moved to AIM.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:28:45):    Ah, sounds about right!
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:29:30):    Funny, I've known you folks just a bit less long than my current best friend in real life.
Eonwe Valar (00:29:44):    :}
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:29:44):    And by "a bit" I'm talking weeks.
Varda Valar (00:31:05):    At least Discord is reformed now. ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:31:08):    He is!
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:31:22):    Though still rather mischievous by nature.
Varda Valar (00:31:51):    It's even voiced by deLancie of Q fame. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:32:33):    Yes :D Who also voices Alarak in Starcraft II and Heroes of the Storm, as well as others (I was delighted to recognize his voice, heavily edited, as the talking tree in Stormheim).
Arien V (00:33:18):    Ents in Stormheim?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:33:22):    Supposed to be an in-joke that Alarak's Q-ability in Heroes of the Storm is called Discord, thereby referencing both characters at once.
Arien V (00:33:30):    or more Huorns :)?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:33:41):    Vrykul changed to tree a long time ago, I think.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:33:59):    https://wow.gamepedia.com/Vydhar
Arien V (00:34:02):    ah that one .. yeah i remember that :)
Arien V (00:34:22):    sounds familiar as well from GoT :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:34:31):    Oh yes, that came to mind as well.
Arien V (00:40:01):    uh i have to strike colors i fear .. so tired *yawns*
Varda Valar (00:40:24):    Namarie, Arien
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:40:22):    Namarie, then :)
Arien V (00:40:31):    i ll be there for the next few days in the background
Arien V (00:40:45):    Namarie :)
Varda Valar (00:41:24):    He reads the Dresden Files audio books too. No lack of work.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:43:00):    "de Lancie mentioned during a 2013 convention panel that his voice recordings of Discord are sped up and lose their deep bass sound" I had wondered about that...
Varda Valar (00:43:30):    Apparently they mess with his voice in others as well.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:43:50):    Vydhar in WoW included :)
Varda Valar (00:44:05):    :)
Varda Valar (00:44:32):    Oh, his Discord is in To Where and Back Again
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:44:53):    Ah yes, the season 6 finale.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:45:07):    Nice Hobbit reference, hm? :)
Eonwe Valar (00:48:44):    "strike colors" ... last time I heard that phrase was when I watched "Blackbeard's Ghost" :}
Eonwe Valar (00:48:51):    Take care Arien :}
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:48:56):    Yo ho, hoist the colors...

Ar-Pharazon-V (00:57:09):    Alrighty, gaming report!
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:57:32):    Let's round up some flashgames.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:59:03):    Hmm, couple of darker and more awkward games I've played this week... I'll try to stick to the moderate/fun ones.
Varda Valar (01:01:39):    (Imagine a powerful eagle like Gwaihir using the One Ring. oboy.)
Eonwe Valar (01:03:21):    Time for me to be off. Take care all and have fun :}
Varda Valar (01:05:55):    Namarie Eonwe
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:06:00):    Namarie!
Varda Valar (01:06:18):    (and the eagles only show up in Mordor after the Ring is safely destroyed)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:07:21):    https://www.kongregate.com/games/Edmund/time-kufc is the first game... just ignore the anagram, it's a puzzle platformer with time shenanigans where you're constantly getting messages from past and future selves.
Varda Valar (01:07:25):    Pardon, didn't mean to interrupt. Carry on. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:09:19):    https://www.kongregate.com/games/piron/orbital-decay is a strategy/defense game in space, defend your ship from incoming smaller ships by buying upgrades for yourself and shooting stuff!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:18:15):    (I need to play more of this game, it's quite addictive... well, on to the third)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:24:20):    http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/sofra is a the third game, short platformer where you play a big rabbit rescuing smaller rabbits from cages. The more you carry, the slower you get, and the less far and high you can jump, so transport and drop when you need to. Ending's a bit dark though, but feel free to ignore it :)

Ar-Pharazon-V (01:28:03):    Blizzard gaming!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:29:14):    Hearthstone: Started the dungeon run quests for the new Kobolds and Catacombs expansion. Interesting feature, almost came close to beating it with one of the classes. But not something that's a priority for me, so I'll probably only do the dungeon thing when I have quests for it. Who knows, maybe I'll win em through sheer luck one day.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:29:54):    Bunch of new cards opened for the expansion, but nothing above rare yet, I think.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:30:43):    Diablo 3: Level 63 now, only had a bit of time to work on it. But with several things completed in other games, maybe I'll have more time during the next week to get to 70.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:32:59):    Heroes of the Storm: A doable brawl this week, the old Garden Terror arena where you have to collect seeds before the other team. Gotten to level 324 now, not sure where I got that new level... probably Genji.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:33:40):    Oh, also Hearthstone: Fun brawl this week, make a deck of 10 cards, get 3 of each. Made it through with a cheap hunter deck :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:34:29):    WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:35:09):    So many things!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:35:44):    New (and last) pet from Deadmines pet dungeon, the pocket cannon. Doesn't do much, but nice to look at as it rolls around behind you :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:38:51):    No new pets from Wailing Caverns (though I did get a third copy of the common quality pet from there) or old raids, though at least one of our party still got something new, which means we don't have to go back to the throne of four winds. Things are progressing and drying up at the same time, as is expected.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:41:43):    Did a whole lot of questing earlier in the week, on monday and tuesday, because they wanted me to unlock the Netherlight Crucible before our third Antorus raid.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:45:48):    And so I did! Worked my way through the whole main questline of Argus and a bit of class hall stuff aside, as well as the Fel Heart of Argus bit. Unlocked new missions and almost all the world quests, as well as the invasions.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:47:41):    And got the Crucible going for my guardian and feral specs :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:50:13):    And sure enough, it paid off! On the tuesday raid we went into Antorus for the last 2 fights, which had me tanking, and it went well. We took out Argus, the final boss, on normal difficulty, and were treated to the last cutscene of this expansion I believe, though personally I still have to see a few when I get into the 5-man dungeon. Should be soon.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:53:46):    5-man dungeon being one of the things I still need to do in Argus, as well as some pre-Antorus quests and some more class hall quests.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:55:23):    Also poked invasions, as well as greater invasions. Interesting fights. Will enjoy getting all the bosses done.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:00:18):    What else... started heroic difficulty in Antorus raid, got first 2 bossfights down.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:01:10):    Did a whole bunch of world quests, mostly in Argus, working also on mount-dropping rares and pet quests for achievements. Got my first mount already, from a fel-spotted egg, one of the mana rays.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:01:54):    And a pet from the Argussian Reach faction after reaching honored, one of the Marsuul pets :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:02:43):    Did all my timewalking in one night, quite tiring, but a whole bunch of badges gotten for 3 characters :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:03:11):    Oh, and completed my Darkmoon Faire project, by getting to 1000 tickets and buying the dirigible mount! Big mount, clunky, but fun!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:07:18):    And still working on Talon's Vengeance rep. Now under 240 marks to go, and now that the Faire is over I can spare the time to do a random battleground each day, those can sometimes give a few.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:07:53):    And unless I'm missing something, that's all for WoW this week! Lots of stuff happening, but not as long to tell as I expected :) With the main lines and some big projects now complete, though, I will soon be able to concentrate on all the little side projects I've been postponing, such as Weavil, the Brawler's Guild, the fishing artifact, and various rep factions. Should be fun, and I hope I can relax my way through the rest of this expansion :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:08:44):    But one game I'd forgotten to mention and that's Starcraft II! Working on the second war chest. If I do one game a day (or most days) I should be able to get the complete chest with plenty of time to spare.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:08:53):    And that's my report for the week!
Varda Valar (02:19:35):    Thanks Phar :)
Varda Valar (03:46:56):    Namarie
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:46:57):    namarie!
Ar-Pharazon-V (03:47:00):    transcript tomorrow :)
Varda Valar (03:47:10):    Yay
