top

Varda Valar (23:26:04):    Tolkien:
Varda Valar (23:26:10):    Arien, go ahead
Arien V (23:26:28):    i had an intersting meeting with Denethor and had a look through the Anor stone ..
Arien V (23:27:33):    so .. just as entrance .. i know it wasnt too long ago .. but the Palantiri as such , what do we know about them, numbers and their fate?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:28:02):    At least 8. A master stone in.. elf island.. *googles*
Varda Valar (23:28:08):    That's actually a big topic. :) We'll see how we do.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:28:24):    Tol Eressea?
Arien V (23:28:28):    Tol Erresea
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:28:39):    Right. And 7 coming ot Middle-earth.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:28:40):    *to
Varda Valar (23:29:58):    They were made in Valinor by the Noldor, seven were given to Amandil of the Andunie. That's what is meant by "the seven stars".
Varda Valar (23:30:33):    Elendil brought the palantiri with him to Middle-earth, fleeing drowning Numenor.
Varda Valar (23:31:19):    He scattered them around his realm in Middle-earth for communication.
Arien V (23:31:55):    can we get them together where they were?
Varda Valar (23:31:55):    The main one was kept in the Dome of Stars in Osgiliath, able to view all the others. (Check me on that!)
Arien V (23:32:07):    i know one was in Fornost
Varda Valar (23:32:20):    Ok, the places changed.
Arien V (23:32:21):    then Minas Itil and Minas Arnor
Arien V (23:32:43):    *Ithil*
Varda Valar (23:33:14):    To start: Minas Ithil, Minas Anor, Orthanc, Annuminas, Elostiron in the Tower Hills, and the Tower of Amon Sul.
Arien V (23:33:55):    ah yes of course i forgot about the Amon Sul one
Varda Valar (23:34:01):    Later,after Elendil fell, the elves took back the one at the Tower Hills, and it only looked to the Undying Lands. That's the one Cirdan has.
Varda Valar (23:34:26):    That one went back to Valinor with the Ring-bearers.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:34:35):    3 in the north, one in orthanc, 3 in the south
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:34:42):    Did it?
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:34:59):    I thought it was still in the tower hills, to be honest.
Varda Valar (23:35:27):    When the Tower of Amon Sul was taken, the palantir was taken to Fornost.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:36:04):    And Aragorn claimed the Orthanc one when Saruman was captured.
Varda Valar (23:36:17):    Both the Amon Sul and Annuminas ones were kept in Fornost, until they were lost in that shipwreck with the King.
Varda Valar (23:36:28):    Last-king Arvedui.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:36:59):    Which he took to Minas Tirith. The other one in Minas Tirith, however... did it go on the pyre with Denethor, rendering it useless?
Varda Valar (23:37:03):    The Osgiliath palantir was lost in the burning of the Kin-strife.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:37:20):    ah yes
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:37:54):    The ones from Fornost would be a nice goal for an aquatic archeology project in later times.
Eonwe Valar (23:37:55):    Useless to most, as I recall. Had to have a very strong will to see anything but burning hands.
Varda Valar (23:37:56):    The Minas Ithil disaster was the worst thing because when the Nazgul took the tower, they got the palantir, and so Sauron had one.
Varda Valar (23:38:34):    Sauron's was probably destroyed when the Ring destroyed so much of Barad-dur.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:39:00):    Possibly, but they were tough little things, physically.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:39:09):    Might have been buried in the wreckage.
Varda Valar (23:39:19):    The Minas Anor stone was most closely aligned to Sauron's, so it was dangerous to use.
Varda Valar (23:39:55):    It wasn't used until Denethor tried it, and Sauron messed with what he could see to make him despair.
Arien V (23:40:04):    thats probably why it could corrupt Denethor so easily by selective showing what denethor was allowed to see
Varda Valar (23:40:49):    The Orthanc stone. Saruman tried to use that one and it opened him up to Sauron. Bad news for everyone.
Arien V (23:40:49):    ((selectively .. grammar isnt the best anymore sigh ))
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:41:02):    Yep, Sauron was sure to make him see what Sauron wanted him to see. Probably something he picked up from Morgoth and Hurin.
Varda Valar (23:41:02):    :)
Varda Valar (23:41:10):    Good thought
Varda Valar (23:41:16):    or, well, awful thought. :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:41:56):    Would Sauron and Saruman have known each other as Maiar of Aule?
Varda Valar (23:42:02):    Grima threw the Orthanc stone as a weapon. Pippin picked it up and it wound up in Aragorn's use. He took it from Sauron's hold.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:42:13):    Maybe that made Saruman more susceptible.
Varda Valar (23:42:19):    Made it show what he wanted instead of what Sauron wanted.
Varda Valar (23:42:23):    Aye, you bet.
Varda Valar (23:42:44):    Interesting that Aragorn could pull away like that, when Saruman did not. Maybe because he had forewarning.
Varda Valar (23:43:23):    After the Ring-war, Aragorn used his stone to look over his kingdom, see how it was doing.
Eonwe Valar (23:43:41):    I believe, among other things, Tolkien attributed it to Aragorn being the rightful owner.
Varda Valar (23:43:47):    That's pretty much all I can come up with at the minute. :)
Varda Valar (23:44:09):    That may be it.
Varda Valar (23:44:32):    Saruman was supposedly the deeded owner of Orthanc and therefore the stone, but that didn't seem to help much.
Eonwe Valar (23:44:38):    Don't remember if I read that in HoME or Letters though.
Eonwe Valar (23:46:09):    It would be rightful ownership by descent, like Anduril, or the ability to free the Dead Men of Dunharrow from their curse.
Varda Valar (23:46:43):    Aragorn, aye. Simply by being the High King and King of Gondor.
Eonwe Valar (23:46:57):    If it were "simple" legality, someone could've bought Dunharrow and told all those ghosts to get off his lawn.
Varda Valar (23:47:05):    heheheh
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:48:34):    Could've worked anyway, but nobody tried it :)
Eonwe Valar (23:48:39):    Hehe
Varda Valar (23:51:08):    If only they had known!
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:51:24):    Who knows where they'd have gone though?
Eonwe Valar (23:51:44):    That reminds me of one of the songs in the old version of "Pete's Dragon."
Varda Valar (23:52:08):    There's a new version? Can't see why.
Eonwe Valar (23:52:25):    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nmV_QZxbuU
Eonwe Valar (23:53:28):    There is a new version, and I thought it actually wasn't too bad. Certainly not as bad as Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocloate Factory" vs the old "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" with Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka.
Eonwe Valar (23:54:45):    As for why there's a new version? Because Disney's on a "remake all our old IPs" kick right now, lol :}
Arien V (23:54:48):    ah the links dont work for me i fear :(
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:55:07):    I'm not even trying direct embedded links in AIM anymore.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:55:26):    I'll see it in the transcript :)
Eonwe Valar (23:55:54):    Old, let's try it this way. you know it's on youtuve.com...
Eonwe Valar (23:55:58):    *youtube.com
Eonwe Valar (23:56:13):    So add to the end /watch?v=-nmV_QZxbuU
Varda Valar (23:56:24):    Shows up well in Discord. :)
Varda Valar (23:56:37):    /duck
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:56:57):    If you simply google the youtube code it already gives the video as a result, so easy :)
Eonwe Valar (23:57:33):    Whatever helps you see the video :}
Varda Valar (23:57:35):    Good to know.
Ar-Pharazon-V (23:59:26):    That song would be over so quickly if she just pointed out that slavery being illegal voids the bill of sale, but I don't know the context of the movie.
Monday, August 21, 2017
Eonwe Valar (00:00:15):    Pete was an orphan. They got him from an orphanage.
Eonwe Valar (00:00:45):    SO their "Bill of Sale" is whatever paperwork would've been appropriate for that at the time.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:01:07):    I still don't think that provides them with ownership. Guardianship at most. Otherwise it's still slavery, y'know. But like I said, context. I don't know where and when it takes place.
Eonwe Valar (00:03:35):    Time is "early 20th century." and the point is those were the bad guys asserting their "legal claim" to Pete.
Arien V (00:04:14):    oh talking about time dear friends ..
Varda Valar (00:04:31):    *the hammer slips over to grab cake*
Varda Valar (00:04:49):    *the hammerpad reaches out (it has arms!) and slings the hammer*
Varda Valar (00:04:53):    *whomp!*
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:04:53):    Just saying that anyone with a bit of common sense and legal knowledge could shoot an arrow through the holes in that claim, but... I take it it's not that kind of serious a movie :)
Eonwe Valar (00:04:54):    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete%27s_Dragon_(1977_film) To give you the basics without watching the film

Varda Valar (00:04:57):    After-meeting!
Varda Valar (00:05:14):    *the hammer laughs and runs back to the shelf with two pieces of cake*
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:05:49):    Enjoy your food, hammer?
Eonwe Valar (00:06:16):    Well depends on the adoption laws of the time, and if there were any reason to believe by those laws they were not being proper guardians. But aye, that is beside the point. Pete ends up with the "good guys" anyway :}
Varda Valar (00:06:58):    *hammerpad has suspicious chocolate around it's...mouth. Hammerpads have mouths?*
Varda Valar (00:07:13):    Namarie, Arien!
Eonwe Valar (00:07:18):    My point of linking that song was related to what we were discussing, that someone can just walk up with a deed and by the power of that piece of paper free the Dead men of Dunharrow :}
Arien V (00:07:26):    Namarie all :)
Eonwe Valar (00:07:33):    Take care Arien :}
Arien V (00:07:41):    Take care ^^
Varda Valar (00:07:58):    Nighty night, Arien!
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:08:03):    I watched Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events not too long ago, the legal ground in that movie is just as shakily silly from the look of it :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:08:05):    Namarie Arien!
Varda Valar (00:08:37):    They're as much fantasy as anything, plays loosely with actual laws and places, etc.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:09:44):    Yep, I'd say the same goes for both movies.
Varda Valar (00:09:52):    Aye
Eonwe Valar (00:11:36):    I must be back and forth from the keyboard now.
Eonwe Valar (00:12:59):    If you've seen the old Pete's Dragon and have a chance to see the new, give it a fair chance.
Varda Valar (00:15:03):    ok
Varda Valar (00:15:17):    The meeting is over. Called After-meeting a while back, no worries. :)
Eonwe Valar (00:15:37):    Karl Urban is in there, if that helps and you recognize the name :}
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:16:04):    Yes, I remember Eomer :) Before LotR I knew him from the Hercules/Xena franchise as well.
Eonwe Valar (00:16:15):    Who was he in that?
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:16:43):    Multiple roles, I think; notably Cupid and Julius Caesar.
Eonwe Valar (00:17:03):    That makes me want to go back and see if I recognize him, heh.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:18:14):    Caesar was somewhat prominent in later seasons, so shouldn't be too hard to find.
Varda Valar (00:20:14):    wow, he was really younger as Cupid. Checked on Google
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:20:21):    hehe
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:20:28):    http://hercules-xena.wikia.com/wiki/Julius_Caesar
Varda Valar (00:24:45):    Namarie
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:24:48):    Namarie!
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:25:04):    I'll throw in personal gaming soon, maybe someone's still around for it :)
Eonwe Valar (00:33:03):    Oh, to make sure my earlier comment on the antagonist family in the original Pete's Dragon was clear, I'm not saying they *were* good guardians: all of their appearances make it clear we're to accept they do not have Pete's best interests in mind. My pont is that if legal action were to be taken, whatever legal authority enacting them would need actual evidence, like say a song in front of an entire town about how they think of/ are treating Pete, hehehe.
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:33:45):    Heh.
Varda Valar (00:34:39):    :)
Varda Valar (00:34:44):    Namarie gang, have fun!
Eonwe Valar (00:34:48):    Take care :}
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:34:50):    namarie!
Varda Valar (00:34:52):    Will enjoy reading the transcript
Eonwe Valar (00:34:56):    Have fun :}
Eonwe Valar (00:35:11):    Hmm, looking at the time, it's my time to get out of here too.
Eonwe Valar (00:35:21):    Take care all, good night, sleep well, and have fun :}
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:35:24):    Transcript it is, then, for the report ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:35:25):    Namarie!
Varda Valar (00:36:03):    okies :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (00:57:06):    Right, for you transcript-readers, here's my personal gaming report!

Ar-Pharazon-V (00:57:15):    Flashgaming:
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:00:08):    3 shorter games today. http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/big is the first one, move a ball around, avoid other balls bouncing around, keep mouse button pressed to grow, pick up bonuses, try to last as long as possible. Personally I find it rather hard, my record so far has been 15 seconds, but surely you can do better!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:02:00):    http://www.onemorelevel.com/game/compact_conflict is a rather compact risk-like game, conquer areas with temples, produce soldiers, see who has the most areas after 12 turns.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:04:16):    http://www.kongregate.com/games/bontegames/whats-inside-the-box is the third! A puzzle game by bontegames, one of my favorite flashgame makers on kongregate. Open each layer of the box by completing a logic puzzle, getting harder as you go but never too hard. And otherwise there are hints available.

Ar-Pharazon-V (01:15:37):    Blizzard gaming:
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:16:52):    Heroes of the Storm: A few more levels got, including getting level 2 on Chromie during the week's brawl, which was a single-lane fight on a spider queen themed map. Took a while to get, but using Chromie I actually did rather well. I think she'll be my next Warcraft assassin to level after getting Gul'dan to 15.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:18:24):    She's squishy, but can rather pack a punch from a long distance with the right talents, and I usually play vs AI anyway so it's a lot safer.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:21:03):    Diablo 3: Working on leveling my seasonal crusader some more. Finished season journey chapter 1, now working on chapter 2, got to level 58 so far. I also got a new pet through a menagerist treasure goblin, a sort of flesh golem type thing. Looks quite weird. But hey, pets!
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:21:45):    Starcraft II: Phase 2 of the war chest has started, and I just finished phase 1 rewards. Next up, the 5 steps of phase 2. Should be done in a week or two, then I just have to wait for phase 3 :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:22:23):    It also comes with a new comic, for those interested.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:25:03):    Hearthstone: Starting to get quite near to level 50 with most of the classes. Been opening more packs, including one with 2 legendaries, one golden. Not very spectacular legendaries, but still, highest quality pack I've ever opened. By some distance.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:27:24):    Also, last monday Starcraft: Remasted launched! Looking good, with fresh graphics for the intros but the briefings at least still seem intact, if in finer detail :) Not tried the gameplay yet.
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:27:30):    *Remastered
Ar-Pharazon-V (01:27:59):    remasted sounds good for a game with spaceships though ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:01:34):    WoW:
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:04:08):    Raiding going well, a lot of Maiden of Vigilance practice on heroic, which is quite a bit harder than the normal version, with some new mechanics around. Continuing to get the other bosses under control. Got new tier gloves which made me able to switch some other pieces around, and got my favorite tank trinket from the raid as well, from the Desolate Host boss.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:05:50):    Been putting more artifact power into my restoration artifact, and now all that's left is the Concordance. Should get that this week, and then I can just throw AP into feral and guardian whenever for some small upgrades.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:07:14):    At that point, though, I'll put less focus on that reward when it comes to missions and world quest rewards. A lot of AP required for very little gain, so not really worth it to go out of my way for it. That'll change when the new artifact knowledge arrives in some form in patch 7.3, haven't really looked into what form that will take.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:08:47):    I've started leveling my fishing pole artifact, too! Going quite well, gotten some of the special perks like water walking, and reduced enemy detection radius while fishing. That last one is a bit tricky because it's still tough to say when they'll see you, and the moment you make a catch you're visible again, but at least getting interrupted mid-cast is less likely.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:09:53):    I've also maxed out the traits for mossgill perch and storm ray, so now I get a good chance of catching entire pools in one catch, which also includes rare fish and lures that you'd have otherwise gotten one at a time. So basically it speeds the whole fishing process up quite a way!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:10:03):    Runescale Koi will be next.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:10:52):    And I finally got some more questing done!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:11:13):    Completed the Good Suramaritan achievement by doing the last story-arc for it, Jandvik's Jarl, in eastern Suramar.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:13:15):    Nice story, and it made the Jandvik vrykul neutral to me, opening up vendors and an innkeeper. It also got me the Koi-Scented Stormray recipe, which was the final barrier to unlocking the last recipes on Nomi. With that option available, I just need to feed fish of basically any kind to Nomi and hope for a good proc-rate on the discoveries. The end seems to be in sight :)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:14:46):    With Suramaritan done, I moved on to some other projects on my to-do list. I started the Balance of Power questline, but am stuck there until next reset. I also went to old Nar'thalas through a key gotten with archeology, went through all the trials there, before duelling the headmistress.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:14:55):    That got me a new title, Headmaster!
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:16:16):    Next up will be hunting down 3 various tomes with the Harbinger cutscenes, for another miscellaneous quest achievement.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:17:20):    For world quests, I finally got the last Bodhi pet master quest done, so now I've fought him with all 10 families. Only pet masters left for me are the ones in Suramar, who I've not seen spawn in some time. But they'll come eventually I'm sure.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:18:18):    And for the weekly quest, it was 4 mythic dungeons. Easily enough done with a raid-geared team, though it did lock me for Darkheart Thicket for which I later got a quest in the Balance of Power questline. So that's why I'm stuck there until next reset.
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:19:35):    Finally, old appearances.. not much progress. Been a week of bad drops. I did get a few items though, including my last item from the Lurker Below in Serpentshrine Cavern. Which, by the way, is much easier to get to when you have a fishing pole that provides water walking ;)
Ar-Pharazon-V (02:20:45):    And that's my news for this week!
Ar-Pharazon-V (04:06:15):    will send transcript tomorrow
Ar-Pharazon-V (04:07:00):    namarie!
