Meeting begins
Chat topic: What kind of survival skills did each member of the Fellowship of the Ring bring to the party?

You have just entered room "valarguildmeetingplace."
VardaValar1 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Phar :-)
ArPharazonV: Aiya!
mcioutpost has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Nar :-)
mcioutpost: Aiya Varda
ArPharazonV: Aiya!@
ArPharazonV: -@
Eonwe Valar has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: Heya.
ArPharazonV: Aiya!
VardaValar1: Aiya Eonwe :-)
VardaValar1: Phar and I were swapping fun links :-)
Eonwe Valar: :}
VardaValar1: Some actual houses with their Christmas lights and music played at the house
VardaValar1: Here's another
mcioutpost: I've seen this. There are several of this house doing different songs, Including night mare before christmas.
VardaValar1: hah - cool
ArPharazonV: I found it through a pony-video based on it.
VardaValar1: Trans-Siberian Orchestra based a show on the house:
VardaValar1: The house being:
VardaValar1: Another house that caused a lot of traffic jams:
VardaValar1: Annnnd I'll stop now. :-)
ArPharazonV: You just linked the pony-video, Varda ;-)
VardaValar1: heh, good thing you're here to keep the links straight.
VardaValar1: Looks like we're ready to start.

VardaValar1: Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo!
VardaValar1: A star shines on the hour of our meeting. :-)
VardaValar1: Membership:
VardaValar1: We've just gone through Christmas and New Year, a fun time for all, we hope. :-)
VardaValar1: Any membership comments?
VardaValar1: JRRT said something about how when things are going well, it's harder to tell than a story of danger and woe.
ArPharazonV: So, no news is good news?
VardaValar1: Maybe the videos will give expression to the cheer we've been having!
VardaValar1: hah - could be.

VardaValar1: Web:
VardaValar1: Our story site is now the site for the Mellon Chronicles after they had a hacker hit their credit card. They decided to just leave their site down and send people to us.
VardaValar1: *gulp*
VardaValar1: I had not yet picked up the videos on their site. A lady has some of them and said she'd try to dig them off an old hard drive for us.
VardaValar1: If anyone reading this can help with rescuing the lost videos, please feel free to contact Varda. Email is on the Membership page.
VardaValar1: Any other web news?

VardaValar1: Gaming:
VardaValar1: Any non-WoW, non-LotRO goings-ons this last week?
ArPharazonV: Well, finished SLHRPG, bit shorter than I thought, with only 3 dungeons. But still good fun for a bit.
VardaValar1: Sauron, Bilbo, and Gimli have been on Star Wars: The Old Republic
VardaValar1: Maybe more dungeons will come in the future?
ArPharazonV: Not that I was expecting anything of the scale of Final Fantasy or anything, of course, it being a fangame.
ArPharazonV: Bit more flashgaming too, but nothing special much.
VardaValar1: Those things can be added to for ages. : )
ArPharazonV: Hah, I suppose, yes, though I've not heard anything about that. There are new versions now and then but that's probably just part of any new release; fixing bugs that escaped initial testing, or removing exploits, that sort of thing.
ArPharazonV: Not that I've encountered any bugs. It all seemed to go rather smoothly.
ArPharazonV: Hmm, I guess that's it. Nothing else played except WoW.
VardaValar1: Thank you. : )

VardaValar1: WoW:
VardaValar1: Eonwe, you had something for WoW?
mcioutpost has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: Aye.
Eonwe Valar: Feast of Winter Veil is now over, so I hope you all got your gifts from under the tree in Ironforge.
VardaValar1: ooops. Knew there was something I was supposed to do there.
ArPharazonV: There, Bufo killed (no pet) so I'm logging out of WoW for now :-)
mcioutpost has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: You forgot the gifts, Varda?
Eonwe Valar: That's it from me. Next WoW event should be the Lunar Festival if memory serves.
ArPharazonV: I wonder if there's anything new in the Lunar Festival.
ArPharazonV: Actually, Darkmoon Faire started today.
ArPharazonV: So if there's still stuff there you want to do, get to it!
VardaValar1: Aye, Phar
VardaValar1: In LotRO, they try to add at least something new every time, and a new horse among them. My stable is insane!
VardaValar1: Surely WoW offers at least some little new things, like pets or doo-dads?
Eonwe Valar: Sometimes. Usually they update the items you can get from the bosses to be useful to the new level cap.
ArPharazonV: Actually, holiday events tend to go unchanged over the years. So if you got the pet 3 years ago, nothing much to do now. But occasionally something new gets added, like the Rotten Helper pet in Winter Veil.
ArPharazonV: And yes, what Eonwe said.
Eonwe Valar: They added a new pet for Winterveil this time.
Eonwe Valar: What Phar said, hehe.
VardaValar1: Huzzah for scaling items, and yay for new pets.

VardaValar1: LotRO:
Eonwe Valar: I got my Rogue the Christmas tree dagger. It was better than his current off-hand, so that helped, hehe.
VardaValar1: Yule Festival is still going for a little while longer, so we can try to finish up Tier 3 there and get our warhorse trappings, or new regular horses suitable for town.
VardaValar1: Nice, Eonwe :-)
karakedi25 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Indis :-)
karakedi25: Aiya
VardaValar1: Good timing, just hit LotR news.
VardaValar1: LotRO
VardaValar1: Are you in a raid at the moment?
karakedi25: no
VardaValar1: Also, tons of clothes and housing items for Yule.
VardaValar1: In regular gaming, we have a number of good friends that we operate in groups with for multi-kin runs.
VardaValar1: Any other comments, suggestions, business?
VardaValar1: Eonwe is still coming to see us on a borrowed computer. Thanks for loaning him to us for meetings!

VardaValar1: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: January 3 was JRRT's birthday!
ArPharazonV: ..Who do we congratulate with that?
mcioutpost: twevity second
mcioutpost: Twelvity second
ArPharazonV: Yep, 122 years.
VardaValar1: Here's the link to his bio on Wiki, with some pictures. Amazing how much they put there, like a small book.
ArPharazonV: Which is 111 + 11. How... symbolic?
VardaValar1: ^^
VardaValar1: He's number one.
VardaValar1: We thank JRRT and his son, Christopher, and the family for letting us continue enjoying the world of Middle-earth, and their care of it to keep it from being overrun by the orcish.

VardaValar1: Downstairs, Sauron had a survival show running on TV, and it gave us a topic for tonight's chat:
VardaValar1: What kind of survival skills did each member of the Fellowship of the Ring bring to the party?
ArPharazonV: Gandalf could make fire.
ArPharazonV: Legolas could scout.
ArPharazonV: Aragorn could hunt.
ArPharazonV: Ehr... Sam could find herbs?
ArPharazonV: And cook!
VardaValar1: The hobbits coulld all cook.
Eonwe Valar: Pippin could throw a rock into a well. Oh wait...
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: Hobbits are well known for their ability with throwing rocks as ranged weapons. Good to bring down small creatures for a meal.
ArPharazonV: Gimli could keep morale up by making jokes in a Scottish accent.
VardaValar1: heh - no Scottish accent in the books, but it does get into the media that way. :-)
Eonwe Valar: Aye, more seriously, Hobbits had good aim :}
ArPharazonV: True, Eonwe. It's in the prologue I believe?
Eonwe Valar: (Varda mentioned, I agreed)
ArPharazonV: Small animals knew to get away when a Hobbit picked up a stone.
ArPharazonV: True, both, then!
Eonwe Valar: But aye, it's in the Prologue.
karakedi25: Wisdom: Gandalf, Aragorn, Frodo (as he grew into it), Sam (of his own sort)
VardaValar1: In LotRO, they even have a hobbit skill quoted from the books: Stoop for a stone.
ArPharazonV: Heh.
VardaValar1: Camping in the wild skills: Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas. Boromir to a lesser extent.
VardaValar1: Ability to navigate in the underground place they had to go: Gimli
ArPharazonV: In a Fellowship videogame I've played you could also throw rocks as Frodo. It didn't hurt anything I think, but you could distract Black Riders with it or draw attention to yourself to draw enemies away.
VardaValar1: At least we trust he kept the others from falling into abysses.
VardaValar1: Sounds like a good idea.
VardaValar1: Gimli and Legolas were very good at starting fires if it was any kind of possibility, helping hide Gandalf's magical presence most of the time.
ArPharazonV: But Gandalf could do it in a pinch.
Eonwe Valar: Sounds like the game by Black Label Games that says on the front it's an official game based on the literary works of Tolkien.
ArPharazonV: I think that's the one, Eonwe.
VardaValar1: Aye, when it was absolutely necessary, Gandalf saved them with fire. But he warned it waa like a sign saying Gandalf was here.
Eonwe Valar: Aye.
ArPharazonV: Hmm, for fun they should've showed that flame in the movie in the shape of the G-rune ;-)
VardaValar1: It's easy to forget that Merry and Pippin had special skills. They knew how to handle boats, and were adventurous, had learned to travel.
VardaValar1: heh
ArPharazonV: I assume Merry could swim?
Eonwe Valar: Aye.
VardaValar1: Boromir had skill in the wild too. He had come all the way from Gondor to Rivendell alone. He did lose a horse along the way.
Eonwe Valar: Aye to Varda's. Don't recall any specifics about Merry swimming.
VardaValar1: Aye, Merry could swim. Pippin probably could. Only Sam was the true rep of the Shire type hobbits.
ArPharazonV: That sounds so casual, losing a horse along the way. Like it fell out of his pocket.
VardaValar1: Yet even Sam knew how to cook all sorts of game, and could locate needed plants, as mentioned earlier.
ArPharazonV: So.. what skills did Frodo bring, except the ability to carry a Ring and not turn to the dark side?
VardaValar1: This suggests Sam had some time traveling in the wild too, or at least not staying in totally domestic places.
VardaValar1: Frodo was half Brandybuck. He knew the outdoor skills from there including boating and swimming.
ArPharazonV: True.
Eonwe Valar: Frodo brought a little knowledge of Elvish languages.
VardaValar1: Frodo liked to hike around, rather like Bilbo, and already was familiar with dwarves and hobbits in the area, and with some wizard named Gandalf.
VardaValar1: Also, Frodo had read a lot, and learned from Bilbo, about lands they would be going through.
VardaValar1: Just hanging around Bilbo, a hobbit will learn quite a bit.
VardaValar1: Gimli knew well how to use his axe. He was traveling with his father, Gloin, to Rivendell, so we know he had quite a history. It would have been nice to hear more about Gimli's previous adventures.
VardaValar1: Gimli seemed to have been familiar with the survivors of Thorin's Company, surely through Gloin. He was deeply affected by the loss of Balin, someone he cared about personally.
VardaValar1: And that lot would surely have gotten him into all sorts of interesting adventures.
VardaValar1: Apparently Faramir was intended by the Valar, but they took Boromir as secone choice. Faramir was leader of the Rangers of the South and would have brought mad survival skills, similar to Aragorn's.
ArPharazonV: Could make a nice series of stories, the adventures of the Dwarven company. And son.
VardaValar1: Boromir surely knew a lot of those as well.
VardaValar1: Aye! Get after that fan-fic, people!
VardaValar1: Already a good title, right there. : )
VardaValar1: So we've mentioned everyone? Aragorn, Boromir, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, Merry, Pippin, Sam, and Frodo.
VardaValar1: Legolas came from the woodland elves, constantly out in woods, fighting all the time.
ArPharazonV: Probably knew how to survive as well, aye :-)
VardaValar1: Also able to go apparently alone from Mirkwood to Rivendell to carry a message.
VardaValar1: Odd that Boromir and Legolas, sons of rulers, traveled alone. No guards, cooks, medics, etc.
ArPharazonV: Well they were dangerous roads, for Boromir at least. Can't imagine him bringing his personal chef with him.
VardaValar1: But that meant they had to know their survival skills.
VardaValar1: Frodo brought his. ;-)
ArPharazonV: Hehe.
VardaValar1: Any hazards coming to Rivendell from northern Mirkwood?
ArPharazonV: Those elusive mountain giants throwing rocks around.
ArPharazonV: I guess Orc numbers were growing again too.
VardaValar1: spiders
ArPharazonV: Well, possibly Legolas was still surrounded by his folk until he left Mirkwood. If our RP is in any way accurate, there's patrols and guardposts all over the place :-)
VardaValar1: That may also have been true for Boromir. And he could have had help from Rohan.
VardaValar1: Then there was passing by the Beornings. I wonder what kind of relationship Thranduil's people and Beorns had.
VardaValar1: I assume they had at least an alliance.
VardaValar1: Then there's the trip through the mountains
ArPharazonV: After the Bo5A? Probably.
VardaValar1: Right
VardaValar1: Maybe somewhat before, too. They were neighbors of a sort.
VardaValar1: Legolas' route has special interest for us because of our rp, the group forum story.
VardaValar1: Speaking of which, do we have any comments to make about our next action in the rp?
mcioutpost has left the room.
mcioutpost has entered the room.
VardaValar1: If not, then,
VardaValar1: *raises the gavel*
VardaValar1: *metallic thwanggg*

VardaValar1: After-meeting!
mcioutpost has left the room.
ArPharazonV: A metal gavel this time?
VardaValar1: I have a wall full of hammers in this digital area. : )
VardaValar1: And some on the shelf.
VardaValar1: They come in handy when making stars and sparks for star starters, sometimes.
ArPharazonV: True. Just bang a couple of gavels together.
VardaValar1: *whannnnng!*
VardaValar1: ohh, pretty sparks!
VardaValar1: *gathers them up and makes a faint batch of stars for fun*
ArPharazonV: *stares up into the sky* were those faint stars always there? hmm..
VardaValar1: Surely so!
VardaValar1: City lights of Gondor tend to drown out the fainter ones. Good to traipse around Middle-earth where one can actually see the sky.
VardaValar1: Eonwe and I are working on a bit of stuff for the Games Site in a side window, still here for a little bit if anyone wants to talk about anything. : )
ArPharazonV: Well, I could mention that lately I've been watching a few Let's Plays on youtube, and someone played Final Fantasy 6... and now I've been listening to a scene/song from it a lot. Not sure if you're familiar with the game, or the opera scene in it?
ArPharazonV: so enjoy!
VardaValar1: Thanks :-)
VardaValar1: Just watched it. Amazing for way back then, would be amazing to see in current games.
ArPharazonV: Aye, thought the same thing.
VardaValar1: They could do that with old tech. Imagine what could be done now.
VardaValar1: Here's the sound track for them already. :-)
ArPharazonV: Very nice :D
ArPharazonV: It somehow sounds worse when actually sung ;-)
VardaValar1: I thought it was fun. :-) Here's this big serious looking symphony and opera singers with the game action going on a projection screen above.
ArPharazonV: hehe
VardaValar1: Music makers give a ton of heart to any kind of producton. And they have as much of a sense of humor and fun as anyone. And they are in the entertainment business.
VardaValar1: Now add a beautiful visual.
VardaValar1: But I really like how they show the music performers.
Eonwe Valar: Restarting computer. Will be back momentarily.
VardaValar1: oh, and watch the forum for the global name restart thingy
karakedi25: what does that require us to do?
Eonwe Valar has left the room.
VardaValar1: It's one name that use for any ProBoards anywhere.
VardaValar1: I think we can still customize the display name.
karakedi25: Do we have to do anything?
VardaValar1: Do you use just the one ProBoard?
karakedi25: Just yours
VardaValar1: Then you probably won't have to do anything. Ask Eonwe when he gets back, as he dug into it more deeply than I did.
Eonwe Valar has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: Back.
ArPharazonV: Aiyata
VardaValar1: Aiyata :-)
Eonwe Valar: Hantalye :}
VardaValar1: ^^
karakedi25: namarie
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
karakedi25 has left the room.
VardaValar1: Namarie, Indis :-)
Eonwe Valar: Take care, belatedly :}
VardaValar1: Eonwe's back in business, looks like. On that very happy note, namarie for now!
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
Eonwe Valar: Take care :}
VardaValar1 has left the room.
Menelvagor Valar has entered the room.
Menelvagor Valar: Aiya!
ArPharazonV: Aiya!
Menelvagor Valar: Happy New Year Pharzie!
Menelvagor Valar: May yours be blessed with good fortune, long life, and lots of sunshine!
ArPharazonV: Happy new year to you too! And to everyone in here, actually, not said that at the start.
Menelvagor Valar: Just you, me and Eonwe in here :-P
ArPharazonV: Well to everyone who *has been* in here and might be reading transcript ;-) And even those who haven't and are just reading.
Menelvagor Valar: Good point!
Menelvagor Valar: A blessed 2014 to everyone reading this! :-)
Eonwe Valar: Heya Menel :}
Eonwe Valar: Happy New Year :}
Menelvagor Valar: Aiya Eonwe!
Menelvagor Valar: Varda asked me something about accessibility to the ftp of the forum?
ArPharazonV: Not sure about that. Maybe Eonwe knows?
ArPharazonV: Anyway, saving and sending transcript
Menelvagor Valar: Aye, question was addressed to Eonwe.
ArPharazonV: Varda did say something about ftp and how Eonwe had figured something out, in a side-window.. but I thought that was about the website. [Note: website, not forum problems, all figured out and ok, no worries.]
ArPharazonV: Anyway, technical stuff.
