VardaValar1 (4:14:56 PM): Web:
VardaValar1 (4:15:02 PM): Gaming pages:
VardaValar1 (4:15:27 PM): Melkor and Orome sent updates for the changed crafting system, a lot of work there. Thank you to them!
VardaValar1 (4:15:32 PM): Tolkien Site:
VardaValar1 (4:15:55 PM): It's now up in a limping fashion on the uploading side, but should be fine for users.
VardaValar1 (4:16:04 PM): We have a new article:
VardaValar1 (4:16:19 PM): Discovering the Inspiration behind Tolkien's Lord of the Rings by CuChullaine O'Reilly FRGS
VardaValar1 (4:16:31 PM): Does that link come through to the chat room?
VardaValar1 (4:16:44 PM): http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/t/Tolkien/Oz.htm
VardaValar1 (4:17:26 PM): It's a suggestion that the Wizard of Oz played a part in how Tolkien made his plot, with comparisons.
VardaValar1 (4:17:45 PM): It's short if you'd like to take a look and comment during Tolkien or now?
VardaValar1 (4:18:23 PM): Any of you still here? : )

VardaValar1 (4:18:40 PM): Gaming:
VardaValar1 (4:18:58 PM): Did anyone play anything besides WoW or LotRO this past week?
Menelvagor Valar (4:19:01 PM): I'm still here, though a bit afk'ish, as I am running a mission in EVE :-D
VardaValar1 (4:19:23 PM): Congrats on getting to play Eve, and that was well-timed for the Games chat. : )
VardaValar1 (4:19:46 PM): WoW:
VardaValar1 (4:20:05 PM): Argent Dawn
VardaValar1 (4:20:23 PM): Anyone get to play on that server? Arien mentioned some gaming in the Before Meeting.
VardaValar1 (4:20:55 PM): Lothar:
VardaValar1 (4:21:57 PM): Gamers I spotted there, most playing together, were Bilbo, Eowyn, Eonwe, Fangorn, Sauron, Varda, Elwing, and Arwen (who chats but plays with another group).
VardaValar1 (4:22:05 PM): Uldaman:
VardaValar1 (4:22:19 PM): Elwing was there, I missed out though.
Menelvagor Valar (4:22:23 PM): I have some news concerning Lothar btw.
VardaValar1 (4:22:28 PM): Menel, go ahead.
Menelvagor Valar (4:23:27 PM): Well, I've been talking to someone I was going to visit in the US and he kinda convinced me to get the US version while I was there, so you'll probably see me at some point at the end of july :-)
Menelvagor Valar (4:23:49 PM): Which is of course meant for everyone I won't meet before that *grin*
VardaValar1 (4:23:59 PM): That would be great. : )
VardaValar1 (4:24:11 PM): We do play both low and high characters on Lothar.
VardaValar1 (4:24:33 PM): Be sure to jump into the Valar channel to find us. We're fairly good about being in there.
Menelvagor Valar (4:24:44 PM): I will :-)
Menelvagor Valar (4:24:54 PM): and if I do forget, you can remind me in person *smile*
VardaValar1 (4:25:00 PM): Any chance that your friend is also in Lothar?
VardaValar1 (4:25:11 PM): I will have Sauron remind you. ;-)
fladrifv (4:25:20 PM) has left the room.
fladrifv (4:25:46 PM) has been invited.
fladrifv (4:25:49 PM) has entered the room.
VardaValar1 (4:26:46 PM): If your friend is not on Lothar, maybe he'd be willing to start a character there?
Menelvagor Valar (4:27:08 PM): He might, I will make him download AIM and watch me attend the meeting on sunday :-)
Menelvagor Valar (4:27:41 PM): At the very least he loved Lord of the Rings, so I might be able to turn him into a Tolkien buff *grin*
VardaValar1 (4:27:55 PM): Did he read the books?
VardaValar1 (4:28:16 PM): (You knew I'd ask)
Menelvagor Valar (4:28:38 PM): Yes he did :-)
VardaValar1 (4:28:59 PM): Great! Maybe he'd be willing to drop an alt in with us.
VardaValar1 (4:29:17 PM): ok, enough pestering Menel
Menelvagor Valar (4:29:19 PM): Perhaps.
Menelvagor Valar (4:29:27 PM): I'll pester him in turn :-)
VardaValar1 (4:29:45 PM): Rather he just have a good time with us.
Menelvagor Valar (4:29:46 PM): And I'll pester you in person as well. *grin*
VardaValar1 (4:29:49 PM): ok
Menelvagor Valar (4:30:04 PM): Don't worry, I am sort of an expert on pestering.
Menelvagor Valar (4:30:13 PM): Somehow I make it funny for the one pestered :-D
VardaValar1 (4:30:13 PM): I get pestered by lots of guildies in person, one more is welcome.
VardaValar1 (4:30:23 PM): LotRO:
VardaValar1 (4:30:48 PM): Very busy bunch. I really should write down some sort of report on all the goings-on, but don't know half of them.
VardaValar1 (4:31:20 PM): Gimli is back from his honeymoon, had some time to level up. Nearly the same level as my guardian already. : )

VardaValar1 (4:31:31 PM): Tolkien:
VardaValar1 (4:31:46 PM): Did any of you previously afk people look at that short article?
AriehnV (4:32:30 PM): *blushes and shakes head*
VardaValar1 (4:32:43 PM): Fladrif sent a link that you might enjoy as much as I did:
VardaValar1 (4:32:59 PM): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/02/Lynx_kitten.jpg
fladrifv (4:33:17 PM): no you cannot hug those, its a cruel predator
fladrifv (4:33:20 PM): *grin*
VardaValar1 (4:33:32 PM): In the beginning area for elves in LotRO, we go after some of these.
VardaValar1 (4:33:53 PM): I'm an elf there, will find a way to hug it!
VardaValar1 (4:34:00 PM): Types /hug
fladrifv (4:34:21 PM): he is not amused
VardaValar1 (4:34:34 PM): He's out of luck - got a hug anyway.
fladrifv (4:35:11 PM): wait until he is grown up
VardaValar1 (4:35:13 PM): Ok, here's the unamused cat Fladrif just showed me:
VardaValar1 (4:35:17 PM): http://www.mentalfloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/trashcat_410.jpg
VardaValar1 (4:35:26 PM): No problem. I have lots of arrows.
fladrifv (4:35:35 PM): *credits to arphar!
VardaValar1 (4:35:45 PM): Thanks, Ar-Pharazon. : )
VardaValar1 (4:36:24 PM): Anyway, the article is a short list comparing The Wizard of Oz to LotR. Thought you folks might enjoy commenting
VardaValar1 (4:36:54 PM): If not, I suspect you would all like to go back to your gaming and I'll let you go.
fladrifv (4:37:29 PM): I would like to read it
VardaValar1 (4:38:09 PM): http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/t/Tolkien/Oz.htm
fladrifv (4:38:18 PM): thanks
VardaValar1 (4:38:23 PM): My pleasure
GwaihirValar (4:40:24 PM) has entered the room.
GwaihirValar (4:40:30 PM): g'day people
VardaValar1 (4:40:33 PM): Aiya Gwaihir : )
VardaValar1 (4:40:44 PM): We were just taking a look at a new article
fladrifv (4:40:52 PM): I never read the book wizzard of oz
VardaValar1 (4:40:57 PM): http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/t/Tolkien/Oz.htm
fladrifv (4:40:58 PM): only saw the cartoon movie
VardaValar1 (4:41:15 PM): Did you see the live movie? It was the first movie to have color.
VardaValar1 (4:42:02 PM): It was in black and white while Dorothy was at home, then shifted to color when she went into the land of Oz.
VardaValar1 (4:42:54 PM): Can you imagine the first audience reaction to that? What an impression it would make.
fladrifv (4:43:13 PM): hehe aye I can
fladrifv (4:43:22 PM): how old is the story?
VardaValar1 (4:43:48 PM): I was wishing the article would say, but it doesn't. We'll have to look it up to find out.
AriehnV (4:43:57 PM): /
fladrifv (4:45:19 PM): 1900
VardaValar1 (4:45:19 PM): June 6, 1939 for the movie's first release date
VardaValar1 (4:45:33 PM): http://www.halcyon.com/piglet/movies2.htm
fladrifv (4:45:36 PM): the book was released 1900
VardaValar1 (4:47:39 PM): aye, and here's a list of Oz books by date:
fladrifv (4:47:40 PM): is there any way tolkien could have based his story on this one or been influenced?
VardaValar1 (4:47:41 PM): http://www.halcyon.com/piglet/books1.htm
VardaValar1 (4:48:21 PM): That's the real question, Fladrif.
fladrifv (4:48:46 PM): good that I figured that out
VardaValar1 (4:48:55 PM): He likely read it and/or saw the movie, but did it affect LotR at all?
VardaValar1 (4:50:11 PM): The similarities could also be ascribed to any fantasy quest.
VardaValar1 (4:50:26 PM): Especially ones that came out after LotR. ;-)
VardaValar1 (4:51:37 PM): Another question is how close are those comparisons?
fladrifv (4:52:55 PM): there are indeed some rules to be able to call it fantasy :)
VardaValar1 (4:53:33 PM): or a quest
fladrifv (4:54:02 PM): is there actually non quest based fantasy?
VardaValar1 (4:54:09 PM): Yes.
VardaValar1 (4:56:31 PM): A lot of quests are looking for an item.
VardaValar1 (4:56:56 PM): It's unusual to have one destroying an item they legitimately have, such as an inherited magic rign.
VardaValar1 (4:56:58 PM): *ring
fladrifv (4:57:28 PM): very true
VardaValar1 (4:58:19 PM): Dorothy's quest is to find a way home.
VardaValar1 (4:59:54 PM): I actually think some of the points in the article really had to reach to be included.
VardaValar1 (5:00:36 PM): One that was left out was that both Dorothy (a child) and Frodo (a hobbit) are short and not the big strong hero type one expects.
VardaValar1 (5:00:53 PM): I have to go, rl.
VardaValar1 (5:00:57 PM): Namarie
fladrifv (5:01:01 PM): Namarie!
