VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/quizes/riddles/riddles.htm
VardaValar1: It can be reached from Poetry or from Quizes
VardaValar1: Some come from Poetry and some from the Forum trivia where we've been making riddles.
VardaValar1: The answers are available to you from the Mouse. : )
VardaValar1: You can also email them to Varda if you don't want to use the Forum.
VardaValar1: Tolkien Site: Story section:
VardaValar1: Two short stories from Jay of Lasgalen:
VardaValar1: Pardon, inviting Beleg :-)
bigdadd363cook has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Beleg :-)
AriehnV: Aiya Beleg :-)
bigdadd363cook: hello everyone
Sarujil: aiya beleg, love your name :-)
Eonwe Valar: Heya Beleg :}
Elwing V: Showers of happy faces....
bigdadd363cook: its so tolkienesqe lol
VardaValar1: We are in the "business" section, under Web News
Sarujil: if youre a hobbit :-)
VardaValar1: We were just telling about the new Riddle page
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/quizes/riddles/riddles.htm
VardaValar1: The riddles come from the Poetry page, the Forum, or if people email them directly to me.
VardaValar1: It's linked to Poetry and to Quizes
bigdadd363cook: oh cool
VardaValar1: Answers come to you from the Mouse.
bigdadd363cook: so who is everyone here that i may know?
VardaValar1: Arien says she is having problems with the Mouse answerer. Anyone else?
VardaValar1: You know me as Fainan. Primary name is Varda.
ArPharazonV: I'm not in LotRO, sorry :-)
VardaValar1: Rest of you feel free to sound off.
bigdadd363cook: not in LotRO...isnt that a sin or something :-\
Elwing V has left the room.
VardaValar1: hehe
ArPharazonV: Well, Pharazon's not famous for keeping to the laws of the Valar, is he?
Elwing V has entered the room.
VardaValar1: He's still stuck in a deep pit in Valinor.
Eonwe Valar: You may recognize me as Auros, but my "true" name is Eonwë :}
bigdadd363cook: thats what happens when you try and invade heaven..silly king lol
VardaValar1: ElwingV here is Elwing as her primary name.
Sarujil: im anc
VardaValar1: Anyone else having trouble with the mouse in the Riddles?
bigdadd363cook: anc? never heard of ya
VardaValar1: hehe
Sarujil: mouse answer works ok for me
bigdadd363cook: where did the name Sarujil come from? i do not recognize it
Sarujil: its a combo of two characters of my own creation :-) surprisingly no one else on aim had it
bigdadd363cook: saruman and ?
Eonwe Valar: I've noticed my riddle gives the wrong answer when you mouse over the riddle text, but that's about all I've noticed wrong with the riddles.
VardaValar1: Netscape and Explorer are both working on Riddles for me. Arien's Explorer is not showing her answers.
Sarujil: the two characters are my own creation, neither is a lotr character :-) anyway varda is probably seething over the fact we've derailed the meeting :-)
VardaValar1: No, the Riddle page derailed it.
bigdadd363cook: oh sorry :-(
VardaValar1: I asked you guys to sound off and tell Beleg who you were. :-)
VardaValar1: Eonwe, wrong answer where?
ArPharazonV: hmhm, Eonwe's riddle *does* give the wrong answer
AriehnV has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: Hold the mouse over the riddle text.
Elwing V: I'm me ...well, except when I'm not :}
VardaValar1: She left
AriehnV has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Ok, what is the answer supposed to be?
AriehnV: Hello am i back :-)
ArPharazonV: Narsil, I think?
Eonwe Valar: On my riddle, when you hold the mouse over the riddle text and when you hold it over the ***, it gives "signpost of Saruman. The answer is correct over...
VardaValar1: Odd
Eonwe Valar: "The mouse's answer"
Eonwe Valar: Just thought you should know.
VardaValar1: To me, Eonwe's riddle shows Narsil
Elwing V: mice don't have very big brains, so don't expect much from it
VardaValar1: Gives a whole sentence about Narsil being reforged into Anduril
Eonwe Valar: Is your mouse cursor over the riddle text itself?
Eonwe Valar: "Two Ages past" through "to face dread, shadow etc"
VardaValar1: oh, I see! Over the ***
Eonwe Valar: Also there, but also over the riddle text.
ArPharazonV: and over the riddle itself
VardaValar1: Hold it over The Mouse's answer.
Eonwe Valar: Aye, there it is correct.
VardaValar1: I need to remove the weird link from the ***. I didn't know it was there, quite unintentional.
AriehnV: still dont work for me
bigdadd363cook has left the room.
VardaValar1: Ok, I just re-uploaded Eonwe's. Try that.
ArPharazonV: now the *** is gone completely, but the riddle itself still gives the wrong answer
VardaValar1: oboy
VardaValar1: The riddle was giving the right answer
ArPharazonV: no it wasn't
bigdadd363cook has entered the room.
VardaValar1: It was the *** that was wrong
ArPharazonV: just the mouse's answer
ArPharazonV: the riddle itself gave the wrong answer
ArPharazonV: and still does
VardaValar1: So when I erased the ***, maybe the tags did something weird
Eonwe Valar: For me, only "The Mouse's answer." gave the right answer.
VardaValar1: Right, Eonwe.
bigdadd363cook: sorry power went out..made me miss my cowboys scoring their touchdown
VardaValar1: The *** was not supposed to exist
ArPharazonV: And it still does
Eonwe Valar: The riddle text did not give the right answer/
VardaValar1: Grats to Cowboys!
Eonwe Valar: In either iteration.
VardaValar1: So everyone is seeing something different.
bigdadd363cook: :-D
ArPharazonV: I'm seeing the same as Eonwe.
VardaValar1: Eonwe of Dallas, grats to your Cowboys :-)
VardaValar1: ok
AriehnV: and still doesnt work but maybe its me
VardaValar1: I guess the mouse idea isn't going to work
Elwing V: hard to train mice properly :}
VardaValar1: When I mouse-over the Mouse's answer, I get Narsil.
ArPharazonV: I just got a new one last week!
ArPharazonV has left the room.
ArPharazonV has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: sorry, wrong button
ArPharazonV: guess no first part of the transcript from me
VardaValar1: When you refresh/reload, getting rid of the ***, you still don't see Narsil come up?
ArPharazonV: I do, but only over "the mouse's answer"
ArPharazonV: the lines of the riddle itself give the wrong answer
VardaValar1: The Mouse's answer is where the answer is supposed to be.
ArPharazonV: Then why is the riddle itself giving the wrong one?
VardaValar1: Nothing was supposed to be on the *** which I just erased.
AriehnV: Ah ye got to right cliick on the mouses answer :-)
Eonwe Valar: You also have a tag on the riddle text, which is the problem.
AriehnV: light fill me with wisdom ;-)
VardaValar1: No click should be needed. Should be a mouse-over.
AriehnV: for me its click
VardaValar1: Ok. I see it one that too
VardaValar1: I wonder why it is all over the place and on the wrong page. I'll have to hit it with the HTML eiditor.
Eonwe Valar: Apparently I can't post the source in here, but at the begining of the riddle you have a tag talking about the signpost of Saruman.
VardaValar1: Should be a mouse over over The Mouse's answer. Not anywhere else. I'll fix it.
VardaValar1: Yes, I understand, but I will have to fix it in the editor later.
VardaValar1: Do you see this on other pages too?
ArPharazonV: Saruman's signpost had such an impact, it spread all over the section
AriehnV: ah i ve got to hold the cursor right in the middle
Eonwe Valar: Hmm, every riddle line has it actually.
AriehnV: then it works ok without click
VardaValar1: Try Ar-Pharazon's
Elwing V: maybe the mouse is Grima in disguise
Eonwe Valar: I can take a look at the other pages, but this was the only page I noticed it on.
VardaValar1: His has an answer on more than one spot too, luckily seems to be the right one.
ArPharazonV: in my riddle, the lines of the riddle itself do not mouse-over, and "the mouse's answer" and the *** both give the right answer
Eonwe Valar: Ancalagon's haiku suffers the same fate as my riddle.
VardaValar1: I have the same, Phar.
AriehnV: Works
Sarujil: my haiku doesnt even have an answer yet :-)
ArPharazonV: Correct, Eonwe
VardaValar1: Ok, I'll just take the whole thing down and re-do it using a proper editor.
VardaValar1: Thanks for testing the page!
VardaValar1: I assume none are working properly.
Eonwe Valar: Most of them appear to be working properly.
ArPharazonV: Mine does, unless the *** isn't supposed to give the answer either
VardaValar1: It's not supposed to
VardaValar1: Only the mouse was supposed to speak.
Elwing V: squeak
Eonwe Valar: A couple of the pages have answers on the ***, in addition to my riddle and Ancalagon's kaiku, but the majority seem to be workiong as intended.
Eonwe Valar: *haiku
ArPharazonV: *smiles at Elwing*
Eonwe Valar: *working
VardaValar1: I deleted them off the internet pending further work.
VardaValar1: Beleg, back to introductions : )
bigdadd363cook: ok
VardaValar1: AriehnV is the same Arien you know from LotRO :-)
bigdadd363cook: oh ok...aiya Arien
AriehnV: Arien, Ariehn, Eriant, Arienwen, Arrien i think are the names
VardaValar1: Like to mention your country or other fun stuff, Arien?
AriehnV: well I hail presently from Scotland, from the beautiful isle of skye,
bigdadd363cook: oh yeah ive seen you mention that in game before
AriehnV: am proud to call my self a wowicist and addicted roleplayer on the Argent Dawn server and serving duty as Valar Branch leader
AriehnV: together with Menelvagor
bigdadd363cook: i played WoW for 2 1/2 years....on Silvermoon and Alexstraza servers
AriehnV: :-)
AriehnV: in rl i work as retail assistant in asupermarket
VardaValar1: Arien also contributed to the Tolkien Site with Articles, Humor, and Stories.
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/authors/Arien.htm
VardaValar1: Her author's page. You can find those from the Members page too, I hope. : )
AriehnV: yes prod me ;-) i should get the new story finished :-)
VardaValar1: *prod*
AriehnV: i promisied ages ago
VardaValar1: hehe - you prod yourself best
VardaValar1: Ar-Pharazon, like to sound off with your country and gaming place?
Elwing V: time goes by so fast too
VardaValar1: Phar?
ArPharazonV: hm? oh
bigdadd363cook: Im from US here..in South Carolina..orginally from Nottingham England though...and i play LotRO right now
ArPharazonV: I'm from the Netherlands, Europe
ArPharazonV: I play mostly WoW, but... what do you mean with gaming place?
Sarujil: didnt you also hold a post with the local law enforcement there in nottingham bel?
bigdadd363cook: i was the Sherriff ;-)
ArPharazonV: I pay WoW from my college fund, and will go back to college in September, studying Earth Sciences
VardaValar1: Gaming place: WoW, LotRO...
Eonwe Valar: What part of South Carolina do you live in?
ArPharazonV: WoW, Warcraft 3, and lots of others if I meet up with someone outside the game who wants to play it
bigdadd363cook: a small town called Allendale...its on Georgia line..about 30min from Augusta Georgia
bigdadd363cook: netherlands...isnt irmo from there as well?
Eonwe Valar: I used to live in Beaufort, on the coast. Not more than a couple of hours from Savannah, GA.
ArPharazonV: Tolkien-wise I'm not much of a contributor to the site besides making transcripts of the meetings, but I'm working on a Numenor-based research that will form the source of at least 1 article from me!
ArPharazonV: Yeah, I think so
ArPharazonV: Though I wouldn't know where in the Netherlands he lives exactly
VardaValar1: But Phar has made most of the transcripts for a very long time :-)
bigdadd363cook: oh yeah...i was tellin Anc this morning..last night i ate a Beaufort stew...crabs,shrimp,crawdads,potatoe s,corn,sausages and onions lol
ArPharazonV: Menelvagor and Fladrif (neither in present meeting) are from the Netherlands too
VardaValar1: They are often here though
bigdadd363cook: i am about 40min from Beaufort
VardaValar1: Aye, Irmo and Miriel are from the Netherlands. How did we get so many from there? : )
VardaValar1: Texas is also well-represented at this meeting. : )
VardaValar1: Elwing, would you like to introduce yourself?
Elwing V: Yeehaa!
VardaValar1: hehe
bigdadd363cook: only one is all that is needed from Carolina lol
VardaValar1: You tell 'em, Beleg. : )
Elwing V: I am in Houston, in driving distance of Varda :}
Eonwe Valar: Kinda wish I'd got to see more of the historic stuff while I lived there. Now I'm about a 20 hour drive from Beaufort, so hard to do, heh.
VardaValar1: She's been my best rl buddy since Junior High School. : )
Elwing V: I am a big WoW fan - my only online game
VardaValar1: Drop Diablo, Elwing?
Elwing V: I only played the "single" version of that, but I liked it a lot
VardaValar1: Elwing is also on the Tolkien Site under Art, Articles, Poetry, and Stories : )
Elwing V: I originally was holding out for LotRO, but they kept pushing it back so often... :-(
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/authors/Elwing.htm
Sarujil: its awesome :-)
VardaValar1: You will need better than dial-up to really enjoy it.
VardaValar1: We've been waiting over 9 years, since it was called Middle-earth Online.
bigdadd363cook: i waited over 5 yrs for LotRO ...i was a member way back when it was Middle Earth online lol....alot changes since then
Eonwe Valar: Yeah, you really need better than Dial-up if you expect to play LotRO during "normal" hours :}
bigdadd363cook: lol
Sarujil: a lot of dsl is near dial up price now
VardaValar1: A bit of news on Elwing ;-)
Elwing V: I'm psyching myself up for a faster version of net, though my dialup has done well for me with WoW
VardaValar1: I was in the process of formatting her latest four chapter story when the meeting started. :-)
Eonwe Valar: Yay Elwing :}
VardaValar1: Wait til you try Ironforge using DSL : )
bigdadd363cook: wouldnt even think of trying that lol
Elwing V: usually I only have problems with the larger patch downloads, not the game itself
ArPharazonV: pff, Ironforge's deserted these days, you should try Shattrath
VardaValar1: We are trying to level her up for Shattrath : )
VardaValar1: LotRO has been eating up the WoW folk, aye.
Elwing V: my hunter is slowly inching up :}
VardaValar1: go go!
ArPharazonV: I've been working a lot on my alts the last few weeks
Elwing V: can't neglect my other char too long tho - they get jealous
VardaValar1: hehe
AriehnV: are we on gaming news then ;P)
ArPharazonV: almost all of them have a few levels more now, up to lvl 42 for my pally
VardaValar1: Her brother is also in our Art site as DeepGroover-(TV)
VardaValar1: Not quite. I'll hurry along :-)
VardaValar1: Eonwe, would you like to introduce yourself, fellow co-chair? : )
Elwing V: he has recently discovered the fun of "gaming" model figure painting
VardaValar1: Oh, one more thing on Elwing...
VardaValar1: Happy Birthday!!!!!

bigdadd363cook: i have a 60 pally as well...use to love to run him through Strat and plaguelands
Eonwe Valar: I live in Texas, am currently working toward a BS in CS :}
bigdadd363cook: only CS i know about is the game Counter Strike...been playing it for 8 or 9 years now lol
VardaValar1: He's used that to help the site in many ways. Notably, he runs the entire Games Site for Valar, and helps in other areas.
Eonwe Valar: CS = Computer Science :} BS = Bachelor's degree of Science :}
Elwing V: hee - a BS in gaming - should be!
VardaValar1: We have had others in CounterStrike too. ;-)
bigdadd363cook: cool..where ya go to school
Eonwe Valar: I'm the Guildmaster for our primary guild branch on Lothar, as well as the overall WoW guy.
Eonwe Valar: UNT
ArPharazonV: UNT... let's see...
ArPharazonV: university of north somethingsomething?
Eonwe Valar: University of North Texas :}
ArPharazonV: ahh, almost
Elwing V: "Bearendil" gives a cheer for UNT :}
bigdadd363cook: i loved WoW..but i told all my friends before i started playing that i was only playing WoW until LotRO came out
Eonwe Valar: LotRo seems to have snagged most of our WoWers in the States, but there are still a few of us.
VardaValar1: They are still getting after him about WoW : )
bigdadd363cook: *tries to hold in the cheer*
VardaValar1: Some of us play both, such as the Laytonrim (my family and a number of our rl friends)
bigdadd363cook: TOUCHDOWN COWBOYS!
Eonwe Valar: *WoWers on the North American Continent, rather.
VardaValar1: Woot!
Eonwe Valar: :}
Eonwe Valar: As Varda said, I take care of the Gaming Site, to which I apply all of my programming knowledge and skill in the manner which is most useful,.. and all for free :}
bigdadd363cook: i guess i should specify now...during football season...i dont get on the comp much on saturdays,sundays,monday nights and thursday nights lol
Elwing V: and he's the bestest banker (lots of freebies there :-)
VardaValar1: Eonwe also did a lot of Tolkien Site articles, poetry, stories, and the Encyclopedia's Search engine. : )
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/authors/Eonwe.htm
Eonwe Valar: And despite the fact that Eonwë is a Maia, in the old tales, he was Fionwë, the son of Manwë and Varda, and thus a Vala :} Feel free to read the article on Eonwë I submitted to the Encyclopedia :}
VardaValar1: Aye, Eonwe is a super banker in WoW, gave me inspiration to do that in LotRO. : )
VardaValar1: He's a fine son. : )
Eonwe Valar: *bow*
Eonwe Valar: I think that covers most everything, unless we're going to start taking questions? :}
Fladrifv has entered the room.
bigdadd363cook: ah hes one of the culprits cuttin into your playing time aye Varda lol
VardaValar1: I share him with his sweet rl mother, who I've had the honor of meeting, and his brother, Dracxil, who is a long-time Guild-friend.
Fladrifv: Aiya

VardaValar1: Aiya Fladrif!

VardaValar1: Sounds fun!
Fladrifv: it is fun :-)
Fladrifv: special with sauron addition muha
AriehnV: Welcome Fladrif :-)
Elwing V: that guy just gets into everything!
Fladrifv: hehe
Eonwe Valar: When introducing yourself, Fladrif, please use the language of us "hasty" races, as oppsoed to your native Entish :}
Eonwe Valar: *opposed
Fladrifv: hoom boom....oh ok
Elwing V: or this meet could take a loooooong time :}
Fladrifv: as you all know am I fladrif one of the ents who suffered most that evil white wizzard

VardaValar1: hehe
bigdadd363cook: lol
bigdadd363cook: havent played that game in awhile

ArPharazonV: you should really be a restoration druid then
ArPharazonV: Tree of Life form
bigdadd363cook: nasty lil goblins they are
Fladrifv: I abandommed the hasty world of wow
ArPharazonV: you'll be back, I know it!
Elwing V: it has it's leisure moments - fishing for one "}
VardaValar1: Or come to LotRO, come to the light side...
Eonwe Valar: Abaandommed? He's going treeish! Quick, get him some water!
bigdadd363cook: fishing will soon be added to LotRO :-)
Fladrifv: *feels its branches teared appart*
VardaValar1: *repairs branches*
Sarujil: and housing too :-)
bigdadd363cook: WOOT
Fladrifv: who needs a house? a fine tree garden is enough
VardaValar1: LotRO will be around quite a long time yet. You'll have your chance.
Fladrifv: ...they make those house too small anyway
VardaValar1: You can adorn our guild house. : )
Fladrifv: *walks further up his hill* all those difficult dissisions
bigdadd363cook: *hides the hournroot trophies i aquired this morning* O:-)
Eonwe Valar: As long as it has a smithy and a garden,.. :}
VardaValar1: We think we might get a forge, not sure yet. Garden, one hopes, maybe farm?
bigdadd363cook: we goin to get the ole Gaffer himself to tend our garden
Fladrifv: but next to all those hasty things if someone likes to challange me for chess im up for it
VardaValar1: You have an online chess program?
Fladrifv: yes
VardaValar1: Which one, so they can challenge you? :-)
Fladrifv: gameknot.com, can play or quick games or slow one
Fladrifv: but for more specific quick play any other will do fine :-)
Srekal86 has left the room.
VardaValar1: Ancalagon, would you like to introduce yourself?
bigdadd363cook: im beleg by the way Flad...new member to the kinship
Fladrifv: *bow* nice to meet you
bigdadd363cook: i play with the kinship in LotRO
Fladrifv: good to see you here
VardaValar1: This is the place where we can meet between our various gaming worlds or if we are Tolkien-onlies.
Sarujil: I'm Ancalagon, you might remember me from such games as Diablo 1 and Lotro.
Sarujil: I joined the guild back in D1 days and kinda fell off the planet for a while until i joined again last year in wow
Sarujil: I'm from Michigan and I'm pursuing a degree in English and a certification in computer networking.
VardaValar1: He finally was disinterred from the ruins of Angband. : )
ArPharazonV: must have taken a lot of fall damage
Sarujil: That is all
VardaValar1: Anc also helped out with transcripts : )
Sarujil: and keep your eyes peeled for my very first story, starring none other than the greatest black dragon ever! Coming soon!
bigdadd363cook: yeah i know Anc :-P
VardaValar1: Yay! We'll enjoy reading that, Anc : )
VardaValar1: And in case no one knows me *cough*
ArPharazonV: ..Who are you?
VardaValar1: primary name Varda, co-chair of the overall guild with the illustrious Eonwe,
VardaValar1: webmaster and editor for the Tolkien Site,
VardaValar1: and for the general guild pages
VardaValar1: Arveleg is now helping with the Book Reviews and Timeline :-)
VardaValar1: I do the Uldaman server WoW Horde branch under Eonwe who is overall WoW.
bigdadd363cook: so yall dont play on same WoW server even? [Note: yes, Varda plays on WoW Lothar and WoW Uldaman.]
VardaValar1: I am founder for the LotRO branch, play Diablo 1, Diablo2X, and BroodWar.
VardaValar1: Too bad at WC3 to play it. ;-)
Elwing V: puts those pretty twinkles in the night sky :}
VardaValar1: Thatt's pretty much it. Thanks, Elwing, lady of the Dawn. : )
VardaValar1: So, everyone knows everyone else now? Some for over 9 years? : )
Eonwe Valar: Our primary server is on Lothar. Some wanted to be able to play Horde as well, so we set up Uldaman as our Horde server.
VardaValar1: Aye, thanks, Eonwe.
VardaValar1: Uldaman Horde group still barely ticks along. : )
Eonwe Valar: Our European members can't easily get with us on the NA servers, so with the help of Arien we have a branch on Argent Dawn.
bigdadd363cook: ah ok
Fladrifv: *points to the sky*
ArPharazonV: not sure, how long have I known you now, Flad?
AriehnV: Very cloudy tonight ..
Eonwe Valar: In case it wasn't strongly implied, we play Alliance on Lothar.
VardaValar1: People's accounts were too filled with Alliance on Lothar, so we (note: Horde) went to Uldaman server for lots of room. : )
Eonwe Valar: We have Guild questing for Lothar on Friday, GUild Questing for Uldaman on Wednesday.
AriehnV: and on Argent Dawn as Fate wills it :-)
VardaValar1: Supposed to be LotRO questing on Monday, as suggested by Orome, but it didn't seem to happen. We quest daily instead.
VardaValar1: But no really organized day. Guess I should try again. : )
Eonwe Valar: Gaming and grouping of course doesn't have to only be on those days, but the Guild Questing days are there so members can have a day when people (myself namely) are most likely to show up.
bigdadd363cook: so the ones that still play WoW only....have yall tried LotRO yet?
Elwing V: I get a rare chance when visiting Varda :}
ArPharazonV: I haven't, but I made my choice, and I can't afford either the time or the money to play both
Fladrifv: I tried wow for 2 years and lotro for 10 days
ArPharazonV: I've seen lots of reports and screenshots, though
Elwing V: Scenery is beautiful
VardaValar1: We handled it by doing the one-shot pay for LotRO.
Elwing V: Characters (familiar!) are well done
VardaValar1: LotRO is still very much a work in progress.
VardaValar1: To quickly finish up the web report:
bigdadd363cook: yeah i couldnt afford both either..even though i might could have when lotro lowered their price for pre order users
VardaValar1: Two new short stories by Jay of Lasgalen
VardaValar1: "Balrog's Balls!" Celebrian sometimes finds parenting the twins difficult around Glorfindel and Elrond.
Elwing V: I have a dinner "out" to go to, so will have to sign off and get ready now
VardaValar1: "Promises to Keep" Thranduil takes a walk in the snowy woods during a difficult time with an unexpected meeting.
VardaValar1: Happy Birthday dinner!
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/fiction/authorsT/JayofLasgalen/stories/BalrogsBalls.htm
bigdadd363cook: have fun Elwing
Elwing V: Now that I've been set up on aim again, I'll try to get back in this more often :}
Eonwe Valar: BOn apetit Elwing :}
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/fiction/authorsT/JayofLasgalen/stories/PromisestoKeep.htm
Elwing V: I shall stuff! :}
VardaValar1: May Red Lobster treat you well!
Elwing V: Namarie all
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
VardaValar1: See you again then!
Elwing V has left the room.
VardaValar1: Any further web news?
Eonwe Valar: Mmmm, Red Lobster had some surprisingly good food when I recently went since the last time I remember going.
ArPharazonV: wow, longest business section ever
VardaValar1: We had a member howdy session, hasn't been done in an Age of the Sun. : )
top

VardaValar1: Gaming report.
VardaValar1: Anything we left out from the chat earlier? : )
VardaValar1: Arien, are you still here instead of in bed?
Fladrifv: not in the sky atleast
ArPharazonV: she's here, we're in sidechat
VardaValar1: Any gaming reporters have anything they want to report, after having pretty well said everything earlier? : )
AriehnV: yes here lol
VardaValar1: WoW Argent Dawn leader has the floor. : )
AriehnV: We have a gaming report for Argent Dawn this week :-)
AriehnV: On thursday night Urwendi got an urgent call from her sister in light , Alcaria (mine and Ar pharazons palies)
AriehnV: Need required it that both travelled to Stormguard keep ,but since we still required a helping hand we called upon Caradhron , a worthy mage of our acquaintance
AriehnV: (Valandil 's mage)
VardaValar1: Is Valandil able to come to one of these meetings? Been a while.
ArPharazonV: (for the linguists, Alcaria is derived from Alcarondas, Pharazon's flagship)
VardaValar1: He's also welcome on the Forum and Tolkien Site. : )
AriehnV: another friend of Alcaria joined us in the venture and so, with some intiial troubles we made it to trhe top of the keep
AriehnV: I will adress him when i meet him next
VardaValar1: Not required, but it's there for him.
VardaValar1: Don't want him feeling orphaned.
AriehnV: adn its stormguarde keep of course
ArPharazonV: Stromgarde :-)
bigdadd363cook: there ya go
AriehnV: we ciollected badges and got rid of some wanted bandits
AriehnV: it was a painful meeting but we succeded in the task :-)
bigdadd363cook: what lvl are your toons
ArPharazonV: mine was 40 or 41 at the time, she's 42 now
ArPharazonV: and currently busy cleansing the Desolace of evil
AriehnV: Urwendi 42 at the time, Alcaria was 41 , Caradhron 43 and the other helper was around that too
bigdadd363cook: oh ok...i thought they were 60s...was wondering if they leveled up stromgarde since i last was on
AriehnV: heehe nope ;-) we had to learn to play at our levels anew ;-)
AriehnV: but think we got there in the end
AriehnV: and thus endeth my report
ArPharazonV: was a bit of an effort, I hadn't played the paladin since before BC
VardaValar1: Thank you, Arien : )
ArPharazonV: but getting used to it a bit again :-)
VardaValar1: Eonwe, WoW Lothar server leader, your floor.
bigdadd363cook: pallys use to own the undead in WoW
Eonwe Valar: Thanks :}
Eonwe Valar: That was back in beta. They changed it for "balance reasons"
VardaValar1: (Whisper Tolkien topics to Varda)
Eonwe Valar: Guildies on Friday were Eonwë, Elwing, Sauron, and Turin. Bilbo made brief appearances.
Eonwe Valar: Eonwë and Dracxil worked on Dracxil's quests in Nagrand much of the time, saving Corki, taking out Ogres, and helping out Lantressor the half-orc, half-Draenei Blademaster.
Eonwe Valar: We even jumped into the Ring of Blood to fight Brokentoe, whom as it turns out we could've two-manned. Afterwards, Sauron joined in and we escorted Dracxil to Shadowmoon Valley.
VardaValar1: (Fangorn was on Lothar too, daily. I've been on pretty often too.)
Eonwe Valar: Once there, Dracxil decided to head out, but Eonwë stuck around a little longer, he and Sauron getting a group to take on Uvuros.
Eonwe Valar: After that, Eonwë decided to call it a night (it was about midnight), while Sauron went to join either Elwing or Turin, perhaps both.
Eonwe Valar: Thus endeth my report. In adendum, earlier today, I got exalted with Kurenei :}
VardaValar1: Woot!
Eonwe Valar: Too bad there was nothing interesting for my blacksmithing Paladin to get at exalted though.
ArPharazonV: so you've got yourself a Talbuk then?
Eonwe Valar: No, I prefer my Charger.
ArPharazonV: ah
Eonwe Valar: I have the ability to buy them. That's enough for now.
VardaValar1: Uldaman server has seen a bit of a rush. Theodwyn's non-Valar characters have been running in our channel
VardaValar1: She is wondering where we are. She built a batch of characters with the Theo name.
VardaValar1: She is in two other guilds besides ours, but likes our concept
VardaValar1: Elwing plays often on Uldaman
VardaValar1: Fangorn, Eowyn, and myself have been playing in Uldaman during the week, notably a very long run Tuesday
VardaValar1: LotRO report:
VardaValar1: Plenty of people on, more expressed interest.
VardaValar1: A group of us are working towards the Tomb of Elendil quest.
VardaValar1: That is the newest instance added, finding an item needed to finish reforging Aragorn's sword.
VardaValar1: It is one of the longest, trickiest, most complicated. So we are helping a number of members reach this last and hardest instance.
VardaValar1: Book 10 comes out on Monday. : )
VardaValar1: A cloak design contest is being held, enter by Sept 4
VardaValar1: Winner's cloak goes into the game. : )
VardaValar1: Beleg, do you want to mention anything about LotRO?
ArPharazonV: an item to finish reforging Narsil, eh...
ArPharazonV: the book never said anything about that!
VardaValar1: It mentioned that Narsil was reforged at Rivendell, but none of the trials they had to go through to do it.
VardaValar1: When Elrond says get the part, we go get the part.
VardaValar1: Hard elf to argue with.
bigdadd363cook: no nothing that i can think of..other than the guild housin g bank is coming along very nicely...should be able to afford our castle when it comes out lol
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: I really think it will cost more than a horse.
VardaValar1: Oh, and new bags and vault slots are coming out.
bigdadd363cook: yeah.. several horses im guessing
VardaValar1: We'll be putting in additions to the guild house as well.
VardaValar1: Everything we can get away with. ;-)
AriehnV: Well i really regret always having to run away in the middle of the meeting :-( and today even before tolien starts
VardaValar1: Any games left unmentioned from today?
bigdadd363cook: i will try and remind everyone as i am on..that donations to the guild housing bank now would be very helpful
VardaValar1: Thanks for coming Arien
VardaValar1: Sorry we ran so late
AriehnV: but i have to sleep for a change ;-)
VardaValar1: Thanks Beleg :-)
ArPharazonV: Namarie then Arien! It will all be in the transcript
bigdadd363cook: namarie Arien
AriehnV: good night all :-)
AriehnV: namarie
VardaValar1: Do! Keyboard face is odd-looking on the sun!
VardaValar1: Namarie.
AriehnV has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: Sleep well :}
VardaValar1: But she likes to jump in. : )
VardaValar1: Any games not yet mentioned that were played this week? Pallando is in Eve Online, for one.
VardaValar1: Anyone in Well of Souls still?
VardaValar1: Most of them are not here though.
top

VardaValar1: Tolkien!
VardaValar1: We have one topic suggested already. Do we have any others?
VardaValar1: *neeker-breekers chirp*
Fladrifv: sorry varda I'm going to search for some well deserved rest
Fladrifv: namarie
VardaValar1: Namarie, Flad!
VardaValar1: It was long
bigdadd363cook: night
VardaValar1: Let's just do the one topic
ArPharazonV: Namarie Flad!
VardaValar1: Ancalagon, go ahead.
Eonwe Valar: Sleep well Fladrif :}
Sarujil: wha?? mine was a fallback topic :-)
VardaValar1: It was? : )
VardaValar1: Falling back then
bigdadd363cook: lol
VardaValar1: Only one suggested by this group today : )
ArPharazonV: those are always the best!
VardaValar1: Not always. : )
Sarujil: well .... i was just going to suggest ..... since people seem to be having a lot of trouble with it .... doing the weekly (seems like) discussion of my riddle. but we dont have to.
VardaValar1: I am eyeing an ever-growing mound of guild webwork.
Sarujil: we can just call it so varda can go get some work done :-)
Eonwe Valar: I'm not quite sure if a haiku makes the best form for a trivia riddle, given the restrictions of the art form.
ArPharazonV: we don't get it, so it must be a good riddle ;-)
Eonwe Valar: *literary form, rather.
VardaValar1: Fladrifv: oh one more thing my name is torenpaardloper in gameknot.com chess play :-)
ArPharazonV: also, Ancalagon, you get to make a new riddle in the Silm thread ;-)
Fladrifv has left the room.
bigdadd363cook: well im glad i was finally able to make it to a meeting...it was good to get to meet everyone...but i gotta go get me some supper
Sarujil has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: Bon Apetit Beleg :}
ArPharazonV: Enjoy your food
VardaValar1: Also eyeing the LotRO computer...
bigdadd363cook: ty...cyall again soon...take care everyone
Eonwe Valar: Good to see you were able to make it :}
VardaValar1: Namarie
Eonwe Valar: Take care :}
bigdadd363cook has left the room.
VardaValar1: You said "delight" was a clue.
Sarujil has entered the room.
Sarujil: sorry got disconnected
VardaValar1: I'm wondering if that would be as in rhyming with deliight, such as "wight".
Sarujil: whered everybody go?
VardaValar1: Way it goes. Welcome back
Eonwe Valar: I have one guess for that haiku. Time to see how wrong it is :}
VardaValar1: Supper mainly
VardaValar1: Go for it, Eonwe!
Sarujil: yeah go for it. i will give hints in this one instance hehe
ArPharazonV: Anc, I said before you disconnected, that you have your chance to make a new riddle in the Silm thread :-)
Sarujil: yeah i wanted everyone to get the bad taste of this one out of their mouths first
VardaValar1: Let us know when you've posted, Eonwe!
ArPharazonV: hehe
VardaValar1: No bad taste. : )
Sarujil: you can just say your ideas here if you want feedback quicker. can go more casual on this horrible abomination of riddledom :-)
Eonwe Valar: posting.
ArPharazonV: all I had in my head was that it's something Gollum-related, but further I'm not really getting
Eonwe Valar: posted
Eonwe Valar: I have two more ideas after that now, but neither seem to fit at all for me.
Sarujil: nope, kind of in the right area, but not quite
Eonwe Valar: So you're saying it doesn't "Ring" true? :}
VardaValar1: hehe
Eonwe Valar: Does my guess give any of you ideas of what it could be?
Sarujil: my advice: take it line by line, starting with the last line :-)
VardaValar1: That is what makes it tough. Makes me want to talk about Bilbo's pocket.
VardaValar1: Or rather, the Ring being in Bilbo's pocket.
Sarujil: thats not a bad guess. but it does say under earth...
VardaValar1: Aye, which throws my guess out the hatch.
Eonwe Valar: Well, "Stinker unaware" could imply Sam is involved, but pretty sure Sam had a real blanket, not "the earth as my blanket."
Sarujil: blanket could be figurative
VardaValar1: Stinker was underground in his lair, again in Mordor but not to his delight, and in Moria.
Eonwe Valar: exactly why Sam can't be involved.
Eonwe Valar: I tend to think "dark" is more important in that second line than "cool"
VardaValar1: Slinker, but Stinker is aware of him.
ArPharazonV: we only wish, to catch a fish...
VardaValar1: Stinker was aware of the fish.
ArPharazonV: so juicy sweet..
Eonwe Valar: One of my thoughts was the bodies in the Dead Marshes, but that wouldn't be right since it's more of a slimy water that'd be their blanket than earth.
VardaValar1: Stinker is unaware of it, dark and cool delights it, and it seems underground.
VardaValar1: Bilbo likes being underground, lives in a hole.
Eonwe Valar: Well, if one assumes that "Stinker" is being used here simply for poetic effect and not to indicate anything other than we're dealing with the Hobbit formerly known as Smeagol,...
VardaValar1: hehe
ArPharazonV: did they bury anything that Gollum had caught at one point, or am I confusing references now?
Eonwe Valar: Then a certain object was in a certain bed, with earth as a blanket, cool and dark, and up until it was raised from its bed by the person who found it, it was unknown to Smeagol.
VardaValar1: Stinker is aware of Shelob. Cirith Ungol is underground.
VardaValar1: Still sounds like the Ring
Eonwe Valar: That really covers all the guesses I have coming to mind right now.
Eonwe Valar: But I've made my guess so I leave it to others to get the right answer :}
VardaValar1: I posted the Ring guess.
ArPharazonV: yes, it sounds like the Ring in the river Anduin, halfburied until picked up by Deagol...
VardaValar1: You could post the Ring in the river, Phar : )
ArPharazonV: I will!
VardaValar1: Likely right.
VardaValar1: Explains it all.
Pallando Valar has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: Heya Pallando :}
VardaValar1: Well hi there, Pallando!
VardaValar1: Caught the tail end : )
Pallando Valar: o/
Pallando Valar: I live! ..sorta
Pallando Valar: First sunday in months that I havn't worked till 9:30 :-)
VardaValar1: Any life is good. : )
VardaValar1: Congrats! I hope : )
VardaValar1: We were just doing the riddles in the Forum together : )
Eonwe Valar: :}
Sarujil: oh by the way, stinker is just there because i didnt want to say gollum or smeagol :-) dont read too much into it
VardaValar1: Earth as my blanketCool and dark to my delightStinker unaware
ArPharazonV: posted, btw
Pallando Valar: Can I say what I think the answer is here?
VardaValar1: Looks good, especially in light of Stinker not being the definitive word.
VardaValar1: Sure, but it only counts if you post it. : )
Pallando Valar: Shelob.
VardaValar1: Stinker unaware?
Pallando Valar: underground, dosn't like light, and was using gollum for her own purposes
VardaValar1: Gollum and Shelob were using each other, aye.
ArPharazonV: could be it
Pallando Valar: Neither were aware of the full extent, either.
ArPharazonV: maybe it didn't mean that he was unaware of her presence, but of her intentions
Pallando Valar: Right
Pallando Valar: Now..can I be bothered to post before one of you snipes me. :p
VardaValar1: Anc, have you posted right or wrong on the last one yet?
VardaValar1: I will not take your answer away. : )
VardaValar1: Please post now though
VardaValar1: Thanks, Pallando : )
Pallando Valar: The one ring is good, dunno why I thought of shelob first.
Sarujil: i posted. youre all going to be disappointed though :-(
VardaValar1: We all missed it, eh? : )
VardaValar1: It is a tad vague
ArPharazonV: That's too bad...
VardaValar1: Or we are being blind, more likely.
Eonwe Valar: You know, the Balrog was something that liked cool, dark places, was buried under earth, and Gollum wouldn't have known about, hehe :}
VardaValar1: Gollum was in Moria : )
VardaValar1: Maybe he passed right by him unaware.
VardaValar1: Mithril would work, even.
VardaValar1: You want to post Balrog and I post mithril? : )
Eonwe Valar: hehe, might do just that in a second :}
VardaValar1: : )
Eonwe Valar: There's all the stuff under Orthanc that Saruman put there. Gollum wouldn't have known about those :}
VardaValar1: Sauron says hi. He's taken Fangorn's place on the WoW computer for now.
Eonwe Valar: For that matter, same can be said of Mordor, and of Angband/Utumno :}
Eonwe Valar: Heya to Sauron :}
ArPharazonV: Gollum wouldn't have known of the gems in the Glittering Caves :-)
Eonwe Valar: Aye, good point, Phar :}
VardaValar1: Don't think Gollum was in the Glittering Caves.
Eonwe Valar: Stalagmites and Stalagtites like cool, dark places :}
VardaValar1: or Utumno.
VardaValar1: Aye : )
Eonwe Valar: In the strictest sense, the kaiku doesn't say Gollum was there, only that he was unaware :}
VardaValar1: Fish, but he knew of them.
Eonwe Valar: *haiku. Don't know why I keep hitting that k first.
VardaValar1: Aye, Eonwe. : )
Pallando Valar: heh
Pallando Valar: I showed that to a few friends of mien and they all though of the ring first
Pallando Valar: I guess I'm just odd. >.>
Eonwe Valar: hehe
Eonwe Valar: Well, apparently the Ring is wrong :}
ArPharazonV: maybe it's not
ArPharazonV: we both posted the wrong under a certain circumstance
ArPharazonV: maybe it is the ring under a different circumstance :-)
ArPharazonV: *the ring, not the wrong
ArPharazonV: now *that* was an odd typo
Eonwe Valar: :}
Eonwe Valar: Well, it can't be the Ring buried in Gollum'
ArPharazonV: not in his cave, and not in the Anduin riverbed
Eonwe Valar: s cave, because while it was there in the "blanket of earth" he was aware of where it was.
ArPharazonV: where else does it have a blanket of earth?
Eonwe Valar: Anduin and Gollum's cave. That's it.
Sarujil: anyway, as for something like the glittering caves, gollum was directly involved in the answer. if it was just something underground that gollum didnt know about it could be nearly anything :-)
Eonwe Valar: It had a home in Bilbo's pocket, then in his hobbit hole from there.
ArPharazonV: unless Bilbo had some dirt in his pocket...
ArPharazonV: ...in his hobbit hole, you say?
ArPharazonV: that can be considered a blanket of earth
Sarujil: i have a few other hints in mind, if you guys need one
Eonwe Valar: So you're saying Gollum should've guessed dirt :}
Eonwe Valar: Perhaps the seedling in Sam's box from Galadriel?
Eonwe Valar: there was some cool earth there.
ArPharazonV: the ring hidden in Bag End? Gollum didn't know where that was... well, he knew "Shire"
Sarujil: gollum was not directly involved in it though
VardaValar1: Let's see. Do we need a hint? Yes.
Eonwe Valar: and it was dark in a box.
Eonwe Valar: potatoes!
Sarujil: ....
ArPharazonV: boil em, mash em..
Eonwe Valar: I'm going with that one.
Eonwe Valar: Posting.
ArPharazonV: ok, now I have to give the link
Sarujil: remember though you have to use the word that gollum was exposed to it as :-)
ArPharazonV: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/taters
Eonwe Valar: There, posted :} Crush my dreams now :}
ArPharazonV: please tell me you used the word "Taters" then :-)
Eonwe Valar: What's taters, Precious? :}
Eonwe Valar: I used taters :}
Sarujil: hehehe
Sarujil: ok i responded
ArPharazonV: hehe
VardaValar1: I just watched that video. : )
Glorfindel VG has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: How did I come up with that answer? I started naming stuff it couldn't be, then I went back to more plausible answers :}
Glorfindel VG has left the room.
VardaValar1: I think it comes from the earlier answer of flying potato skins.
Eonwe Valar: Or, quite simply: Divine Inspiration :}
VardaValar1: Welcome back, Glorfindel. : )
ArPharazonV: *grin* that must be it
ArPharazonV: welcome back?
VardaValar1: Indubitably.
VardaValar1: Glorfindel says he can't join, keeps freezing up.
Eonwe Valar: I'm going to need time for a good question after that one :}
Glorfindel VG has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Welcome back
Glorfindel VG: finally hehe
VardaValar1: Yay!
Glorfindel VG: sorry im late, but i went ot church today
Eonwe Valar: Welcome back, Glorfindel :}
VardaValar1: I did too, but in the morning. : )
ArPharazonV: what's taters, eh?
VardaValar1: But that is the best reason I've heard yet. : )
Eonwe Valar: NP at all, Glorfindel :}
VardaValar1 has left the room.
Pallando Valar has left the room.
Glorfindel VG has left the room.
You have just entered room "valarguildmeetingplace."
Eonwe Valar: Glad I'm saving often :}
ArPharazonV: welcome back
Sarujil: its an epidemic'
VardaValar1: yikes
ArPharazonV: good for telling me, I'll save this bit just in case
Glorfindel VG: hmm good one eonwe
Glorfindel VG: taters makes the most sense
Eonwe Valar: Welcome back Varda :}
Glorfindel VG: that riddle was driving me crazy the other day
Sarujil: now use the haiku to explain the answer muwahahaha
Eonwe Valar: hehe
VardaValar1: hehe\
ArPharazonV: it grows under the ground, grows best in dark and cool places...
VardaValar1: But taters? Stinker seemed aware of them to me.
ArPharazonV: and Gollum was unaware of what they were!
VardaValar1: What's Taters, Precious.
Glorfindel VG: "whats taters, precious!"
Glorfindel VG: hehe
ArPharazonV: what's taters, eh?
VardaValar1: ok, yep.
Eonwe Valar: PO-TA-TOES! :}
Sarujil: exactly :-)
VardaValar1: Works.
ArPharazonV: what we need is a few good taters...
VardaValar1: <bows to Eonwe>
Glorfindel VG: boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew
VardaValar1: Suppose we should have that link under Humor? : )
VardaValar1: Maybe with your riddle.
Sarujil: lol
VardaValar1: I know! Use it for the answer.
Sarujil: haha, perfect!
Eonwe Valar: hehe
Sarujil: beleg will be disappointed. he's a tater freak on lotro
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: He will enjoy seeing this.
Sarujil: oh he'll like the video, but he'll be disappointed he didnt get the answer :-)
VardaValar1: I'm disappointed I didn't get the answer too, but thrilled Eonwe prevented a party wipe. : )
Eonwe Valar: :}
Eonwe Valar: Divine Intervention for the win :}
Eonwe Valar: Good to be a Pally :}
VardaValar1: hehe
ArPharazonV: I've known that video for plenty of months, with such a tool at my disposal, I shouldn't have missed the answer ;-)
ArPharazonV: so, Eonwe, got a new one yet? :-)
Eonwe Valar: Not yet :}
Eonwe Valar: Going to need to really think about this one :}
Sarujil: make sure its a haiku! hehehe
Eonwe Valar: hehe
Eonwe Valar: Ok, that video was fairly amusing.
VardaValar1: I'm going to officially call it here.
VardaValar1: If you'd like to continue, of course, feel free!
Eonwe Valar: :}
top

VardaValar1: After-meeting!
ArPharazonV: you know the fellowship of the ring game by black label, right?
Sarujil: i know the one by interplay...
ArPharazonV: it's not working for me for some reason, after you start it it opens, but the screen remains black, and nothing happens, instead of the intro showing
Eonwe Valar: What system do you have it for?
ArPharazonV: you mean windows version?
Eonwe Valar: I have both Interplay ones btw, and used to be a regular poster on the Interplay LotR game forums until they diesappeared.
Sarujil has left the room.
Sarujil has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: No, the BLack Label game is out for PC as well as XBox, PS2, and I think Gamecube.
ArPharazonV: this is on the pc
Eonwe Valar: So I'm asking which one of those you're playing.
Eonwe Valar: ok
Eonwe Valar: have you checked for updates/
Eonwe Valar: ?
Eonwe Valar: both to the game and your cd/dvd drivers.
ArPharazonV: the game doesn't seem to have an update function, I'll have to check online
Eonwe Valar: The dvd drivers were my problem when I tried to play War of the Ring by Sierra.
Eonwe Valar: Well, it's only a Single-Player game, so I doubt the studio would bother putting an update function in the game.
ArPharazonV: not good with the technical stuff, I was hoping for something simpler like playing it on a different resolution or something
Eonwe Valar: Are you able to get that far?
ArPharazonV: yes, there is an engine option from the main menu when you open it, one other is to play the game, or to install the game...
Eonwe Valar: You said nothing happens after the screen goes black, so I assumed you couldn't get to the menu.
ArPharazonV: this is before you start the actual game
Eonwe Valar: I assume you meet minimum specs for the game?
ArPharazonV: I definitely do, it used to play, but it doesn't now, not sure if that was on an older pc
ArPharazonV: is it possible that it doesn't play on newer video cards?
Eonwe Valar: It shouldn't be possible.
Eonwe Valar: You could try updating your graphics card drivers as well.
ArPharazonV: I... am not sure how exactly to do that
Eonwe Valar: Well, there's a way you can do it by accessing your system information,.. however,..
Eonwe Valar: I found it's more reliable to check the web. You can go to the website for your graphics card makers, or try the website for the computer company who sold you your computer.
ArPharazonV: I have a nvidia geforce 6800 le?
Eonwe Valar: With the former method (updating drivers through the system info panel) my computer's told me there are no updates, then I've gone to the web site for Dell (who I got my computer through) and found updates, so I've decided it's not
Eonwe Valar: that reliable.
Eonwe Valar: go to the nvidia website then.
ArPharazonV: Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris Drivers» BETA Drivers» NVIDIA Business Platform Drivers» ULi Drivers
ArPharazonV: I have no idea which to choose!
Eonwe Valar: hmmm
Eonwe Valar: There "should" be a way to find drivers for your specific graphics card.
Eonwe Valar: if it requires any more specification than that, go by what looks like most fits with your computer.
ArPharazonV: would 6800 fall under the geforce 6 series?
Eonwe Valar: Give me the web address you're at so I can see what you're looking at.
ArPharazonV: an error occurs when I send the message?
ArPharazonV: www.nvidia.com/page/drivers.html
ArPharazonV: that's better
ArPharazonV: it links through to the current one, which apparently I can't post here
Eonwe Valar: Now we play the waiting game while the page loads.
ArPharazonV: how do you update drivers through the system info panel?
Eonwe Valar: go to control panel, system information.
Eonwe Valar: scratch information, just "System.
Eonwe Valar: "
ArPharazonV: then?
Eonwe Valar: Hardware
ArPharazonV: jup
ArPharazonV: it's in Dutch here but I try to translate
Eonwe Valar: Give me a sec, walking through it as I go too.
Eonwe Valar: Click on the button that says "Device Manager"
Eonwe Valar: Go to "Display Adapters"
Eonwe Valar: Your graphics card should be there.
ArPharazonV: yup, I got that far, that's how I knew what my graphics card was
ArPharazonV: how do I check through there for driver updates?
Eonwe Valar: Double-Click on your graphics card.
Eonwe Valar: You'll get a window to open up. Select the "Driver" Tab.
Eonwe Valar: Let's you get Driver Details, Update Driver, ROll Back Driver, and UNinstall.
ArPharazonV: loosely translated, yep
Eonwe Valar: Ok
ArPharazonV: when I do update driver, it's searching for something on cd or disk or something
Eonwe Valar: That's what I typically run into as well.
Eonwe Valar: That's why I said it was less reliable.
ArPharazonV: ahh
ArPharazonV: there's no way to check if there's updates available online from that menu?
Eonwe Valar: ok, so what is your graphics card again?
Eonwe Valar: Hmm, apparently not.
Eonwe Valar: I remember there being a way to check the web for update...
ArPharazonV: nvidia geforce 6800 le
Eonwe Valar: Might be in your actual graphics card utilities.
Eonwe Valar: Ok, well the web page has loaded for me.
ArPharazonV: do I need to choose graphic driver, then series 6?
Eonwe Valar: Let's see what drivers are under the "6 series" selection. Don't download anything yet, just see if there's anything that shows something similar to your Graphics card info.
ArPharazonV: ForceWare Release 162
Eonwe Valar: What windows version? XP Home?
ArPharazonV: GeForce 6800 LE
ArPharazonV: bingo
Eonwe Valar: ok, good.
ArPharazonV: xp, yes
Eonwe Valar: So you found something for your graphics card.
ArPharazonV: hmm... xp home or pro...
Eonwe Valar: It should have a version number for it. You can compare that to your Driver version information to see which is newer.
ArPharazonV: hmm, appears I have professional
ArPharazonV: well, doesn't matter, links to the same driver
Eonwe Valar: cool
ArPharazonV: 162.18 WHQL
ArPharazonV: is the version of the new one...
Eonwe Valar: Aye, three's not really that big of a difference in Home and Pro, just a few additional items Pro has.
ArPharazonV: driver version 8.4.2.5
ArPharazonV: that's not really helping
Eonwe Valar: Conpare that info and the release date with the information for your drivers. If this one is more recent, then you can go ahead and grab it.
Eonwe Valar: *Compare.
ArPharazonV: what's newer, 162.18 whql or 8.4.2.5?
ArPharazonV: the release date you say
ArPharazonV: 17-3-2006, July 26, 2007...
Eonwe Valar: Well, apparently this was released July 26 of this year, so if you got your computer before that, you might be able to update.
ArPharazonV: well, that's a clear win
Eonwe Valar: Do the same for your CD/DVD drive.
Eonwe Valar: See if that helps you play the game.
ArPharazonV: there's some suspicious info in the download hints documentation...
Eonwe Valar: really?
ArPharazonV: ## Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.
ArPharazonV: Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel.
ArPharazonV: Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.
Eonwe Valar: hmmm
ArPharazonV: is it wise to deinstall the old one?
ArPharazonV: if it doesn't work...
Eonwe Valar: I've never had to before. I'm loathe to advise you in either direction at this point.
ArPharazonV: anyway, it's late, I'll have to go to bed
ArPharazonV: I'll wait until download is ready and install the thing tomorrow
ArPharazonV: thanks for the help
Eonwe Valar: MP. Hope it does help.
ArPharazonV: Me too!
ArPharazonV: cd/dvd drive too, you say?
Eonwe Valar: Aye. That was the problem I had with WotR.
Eonwe Valar: You might check the Tech support forum for the game before installing anything though,..
Eonwe Valar: just to make sure there's not a simpler solution.
ArPharazonV: there doesn't seem to be any
Eonwe Valar: really? hmm.
Eonwe Valar: any troubleshooting tips in the game manual/readme?
ArPharazonV: It is strongly recommended that you download and use the latest video, audio and DirectX drivers. See your card manufacturers help informationfor the location of the most recent drivers.
ArPharazonV: hehe
Eonwe Valar: hehe
Eonwe Valar: Ok, well I hope what I've suggested helps more than that.
ArPharazonV: 1. Windows XP users need SP1 installed for DirectX 8.1b.
ArPharazonV: I have SP2, and a higher directx!
ArPharazonV: I think
ArPharazonV: how do I check directX?
Eonwe Valar: Hmm, that's a good question.
ArPharazonV: well, I play WoW, that's bound to have a higher one
ArPharazonV: even warcraft 3 has a higher one
Eonwe Valar: Here's a quick way that comes to mind: Blizzard usually has the latest DirectX version on their game discs.
ArPharazonV: yeah, I have higher
ArPharazonV: I must have higher
Eonwe Valar: I think the latest version is DirectX 9d, so you should have that, no worries, if you play WoW.
Eonwe Valar: Well, technically I think DirectX 10 was supposed to come out with Vista, but I don't think I'd worry about FotR using that given it was made a couple of years ago.
ArPharazonV: *nod*
ArPharazonV: allright, it's installed, but I'll need to reboot before I can use it
Eonwe Valar: Most if not all of the games today are still using DirectX9, so you have nothing to worry about there really.
Eonwe Valar: When I say "Most if not all" I of course mean those based on DirectX :}
ArPharazonV: *nod*
ArPharazonV: well, I'm going to bed, will try tomorrow
ArPharazonV: saving and sending
ArPharazonV: saved
Eonwe Valar: Sleep well Phar and good lcuk :}
VardaValar1: Thank you!
Eonwe Valar: luck even :}
VardaValar1: Good night :-)
ArPharazonV: And sent!
VardaValar1: Yay Phar! Thank you again.
ArPharazonV: Goodnight!
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
VardaValar1: Namarie.
Eonwe Valar: Take care :}
ArPharazonV: I'm almost done with the Notion Club Papers now, I should be well into the Drowning of Anadune and the main essay on Adunaic next week :-)
ArPharazonV: I have to say, this little research has really sparked renewed interest in all things Tolkien, especially around the Silmarillion and Akallabeth
VardaValar1: Research will do that. : )
ArPharazonV: I have no doubt I'll be reading more of it after this little project is done :-)
VardaValar1: Excellent!
ArPharazonV: still want to get my hands on those Letters though, but that might come
VardaValar1: you should get Letters of Tolkien, aye :-)
ArPharazonV: bbye
ArPharazonV has left the room.
Sarujil has left the room.
Sarujil has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: WB Ancalagon.
Sarujil has left the room.
VardaValar1: Ok, I may go play some LotRO now. This new program has had all the hair pulled that it's allowed for now. : )
VardaValar1: It can pull more hair later.
VardaValar1: Namarie
