Tolkien:
Our Story page may have a great number of stories from outside Valar. Comment: the more the merrier. What kind of rating system would we want to use, and which stories should we quietly drop as if non-existent? American movie rating plus comments for why on some such as character death. Mention if it's AU (alternate universe, not canon.) Defining canon.
After-meeting
The evil of Melkor/Morgoth and Sauron.

VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/fiction/stories/Eonwe/Unrest_WhatEvilFears.htm
VardaValar1: Enjoy!
VardaValar1: We also have a new item on the Links page:
VardaValar1: A fairly new Tolkien fan fiction page called Rivendell Archives
VardaValar1: http://www.rivendellarchives.com/
VardaValar1: I've been chatting with the lady who runs it
VardaValar1: She must be smart, immediately tried to recruit me
VardaValar1: The WoW Lothar player page has been updated, but is very hard to keep really accurate, with us gaming all the time
ArathornValar has entered the room.
VardaValar1: I'll keep after it
VardaValar1: Aiya Arathorn
Haleth V: aiya
ArathornValar: heya, couldnt sleep

top

VardaValar1: Gaming News:
ArathornValar: grabbin a quick bite and will try again in a bit :-P
VardaValar1: Has anyone played anything other than WoW this week?
ArathornValar: oohhh! saw a nice one on the AH too =P
STEvilaim: anyone play FreeLancer at all?
VardaValar1: I believe so
VardaValar1: Everyone needs to email their gaming info to Eonwe for the Games page
VardaValar1: It really helps with such questions
STEvilaim: good point :P
VardaValar1: Scatha says Multi-theft Auto is updated:  [mod]
VardaValar1: http://light.mtavc.com/
VardaValar1: Any other info you wanted to say on it?
ArPharazonV: ok, back
STEvilaim: they are distributing the files to mirrors as i type, then it will be ready for download soon
ArPharazonV: just got to 100 with the trivia bot
VardaValar1: Also helps to find each other if we use our guild names on other games
VardaValar1: Great, Scatha!
VardaValar1: Grats, Phar
ArPharazonV: promotion to Wanderer!
ArPharazonV: *stops interrupting*
VardaValar1: I've been on D2:LoD, had to shock Orodreth's Valar Buddy bot in Valar channel : )
VardaValar1: WoW Europe have any news for us?
VardaValar1: Phar, that would be you today : )
ArPharazonV: ah
ArPharazonV: well, ehrm... I haven't done much with other valarmembers, spent most of the time in Gnomeregan farming silk for the war effort, and IF reputation
ArPharazonV: did a few raids, got myself a cloak from Ragnaros
ArPharazonV: we killed Vael
VardaValar1: Sounds fun
VardaValar1: Have you seen any of the other Valar?
Haleth V has left the room.
Haleth V has entered the room.
Haleth V: Sorry, AOL kicked me off
ArPharazonV: our second raidalliance, for those of our guilds who didn't get in the first one, is well underway.. I accompanied them to Zul'Gurub, helped them kill their first raid-boss
VardaValar1: America Off Line, we sympathize
ArPharazonV: other Valar? Can't say I have
ArPharazonV: Fladrif occasionally
Haleth V: We might be getting cable soon though =)
VardaValar1: Valandil maybe?
VardaValar1: That could really help, Haleth! Good luck!
ArPharazonV: nope, neither Valandil nor Menelvagor, although I might just have overlooked him.. could happen
Haleth V: Thanks Varda
VardaValar1: On WoW Lothar, we have been grouping and chatting all week, good time
VardaValar1: The WoW Friday get-together seems to have the fewest people on, so we might have to consider another time if the group wishes
VardaValar1: We did two instances Friday anyway : )
VardaValar1: If anyone has a Tolkien topic, please whisper : )
top

VardaValar1: Tolkien:
VardaValar1: Some of us have been having a fun time with a Trivia bot
VardaValar1: Ar-Pharazon is happily running it right now
VardaValar1: The directions to go to it are on the News
VardaValar1: If anyone is having trouble with the directions, please let me know!
ArPharazonV: nope, left the channel when I reached 100, to put my concentration here
VardaValar1: Thanks, Phar : )
ArPharazonV: I'll return to it in the aftermeeting
VardaValar1: Phar, Eonwe, and I hit it last weekend, and Team Valar did quite well : )
VardaValar1: Phar is a blazingly fast typist
ArPharazonV: typing course in high-school ;-)
VardaValar1: Handy : )
VardaValar1: We have a number of people from outside the guild interested in adding stories to our site
ArPharazonV: I can type so fast now, you'd be hard put to find out my passwords even if you were looking over my shoulder as I was typing them...
VardaValar1: Does anyone have any opinions (I hope) and what they would or would not like to have added?
VardaValar1: The pile of asterisks do get in the way, Phar : )
STEvilaim: I would say that if it is well written, why not?
VardaValar1: Do you have any feelings about the rating?
VardaValar1: At least show a rating for some? Don't allow some? Allow anything?
Arwen V1 has entered the room.
VardaValar1: You guys surely have an opinion : )
VardaValar1: Aiya Arwen!
STEvilaim: im thinking
Arwen V1: Aiya!
VardaValar1: Arwen, we were just considering what rating stories we should allow on our site, if well-writtten
VardaValar1: Do we just mark the warning, or not allow on the very graphic?
VardaValar1: Is anyone here? : )
GilraenV: Eh. Add clear rating, and a warning that certain classifications (ther are a lot of different rating systems out there) are graphic and not suitable for young or sensitive readers
VardaValar1: That's more generous than expected
TurgonjustTurgon has entered the room.
VardaValar1: We could go with the movie rating. Most people know that one?
VardaValar1: Aiya!
TurgonjustTurgon: Aiya
ArPharazonV: what a familiar name...
STEvilaim: sounds good tome
Haleth V: aiya
STEvilaim: *to me
GilraenV: American movie rating is pretty much standard amongst fanfiction sites, so I'd imagien that would be the most well-known
TurgonjustTurgon: Sorry for being on this account again, but for some reason, I can't log in with Menelvagor... :-(
VardaValar1: Good thing you have a back-up! : )
ArPharazonV: wow, Menel, been a while since I saw this one
Arwen V1: I am unsure whether the very graphic goes along with our... way of doing things?
GilraenV: perhaps a page with the equivalent in other rating systems would be useful also, for those new to the terms
VardaValar1: Sounds good, Gilraen
TurgonjustTurgon: quite a while, yes.
GilraenV: I need to go sleep though, work in the morning
VardaValar1: Maybe an explanation of the rating on the main story page?
TurgonjustTurgon: about 13 months give or take a few days :-)
ArPharazonV: how's the WoW-issues? got yourself a gamecard yet?
GilraenV: Namarie, folks
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
VardaValar1: Namarie
Haleth V: Namarie
GilraenV has left the room.
Haleth V: And I might need to go soon too... five dogs to walk.
VardaValar1: Menel, we were just discussing how strong a rating we should allow on our Story page
VardaValar1: Now that should give you exercise, Haleth!
Haleth V: Definitely :-)
Haleth V: My brother moved in during the summer with his two dogs, so...
VardaValar1: I was rather expecting a lot of "no way" on the more graphic stories, but it seems just a warning rating is all that's been requested so far
VardaValar1: I imagine the Council will pin my ears back, but we'll see what they say
STEvilaim: testing MTA:SA now, may be unresponsive..
VardaValar1: No problem
VardaValar1: Is anyone still here? Please say aye
VardaValar1: aye
Haleth V: aye
ArPharazonV: aye
ArPharazonV: im-ing with Menel
VardaValar1: Good : )
Arwen V1: aye =D
VardaValar1: So we girls have the channel to ourselves ;-)
Arwen V1: woot!
FarmerMaggotV: aye
FarmerMaggotV: kinda
Haleth V: lol
TurgonjustTurgon: aye, but as Phar said, IM'ing with him, and I am working on my 2nd assessment, which is due tomorrow.
FarmerMaggotV: (debugging, meh)
VardaValar1: On our ratings, would character death take it to PG-13?
VardaValar1: Good luck, Farmer!
TurgonjustTurgon: (and I have to grab a couple thousand files from I have no idea where and put em together in a couple big ones)
ArathornValar: Zzzzz
ArPharazonV: character death is perfectly normal in Tolkien's world
ArathornValar: well Im off to try sleeping again.. take care all!
VardaValar1: The mallet worked on Arathorn : )
Haleth V: Good luck :-)
VardaValar1: Nighty night
ArathornValar: yar!
VardaValar1: Aye, Phar
ArathornValar has left the room.
VardaValar1: The LotR movies were not for the very young, either
Haleth V: True... so if we just wrote the usual "Includes character death, violence" warnings, would that work for a rating system?
VardaValar1: War stories do tend to have bodies
Arwen V1: in other fanficdoms, character death is often a side note in the summarys
ArPharazonV: they had to cut down the sequence of Denethor burning to keep the PG from going up ;-)
VardaValar1: That's interesting
Arwen V1: because some people dont like reading character death stories (especially the death of a main character that cannonically doesnt die)
VardaValar1: Now that's a point
VardaValar1: That would be an AU story
VardaValar1: Alternate Universe, and should be marked as such
Arwen V1: but most ficdoms handle that by marking it a character death story or some such =)
ArPharazonV: well, you could have a main character death within the normal universe...
VardaValar1: The only thing I've ever had against that is it takes away some of the surprise
ArPharazonV: a personal journal for Boromir or something, ending with his death, for example ;-)
VardaValar1: Aye, Phar
VardaValar1: We have several stories like that already
Arwen V1: but Boromir dies in canon
Arwen V1: his death isnt unexpected
VardaValar1: So mark it "character death" if a main character dies
VardaValar1: Plus AU if it anything is not in canon
VardaValar1: Canon is sometimes tough.
VardaValar1: For canon, we go with H, LotR, Sil
VardaValar1: LotR has precedence over Sil
ArPharazonV: how about Unfinished Tales?
VardaValar1: UT is farther out : )
Haleth V: Or the other History of Middle Earth books?
VardaValar1: All Tolkien is at least partly canon
ArPharazonV: I'd keep Gondolin or Turin in UT above Silm, but that's just nit-picking
VardaValar1: But those three are at the top when deciding
VardaValar1: If it is in Tolkien anywhere, we can call it "canon"
Haleth V: True.
VardaValar1: Just one is HoME canon, one is LotR canon
VardaValar1: The subject generally tells where it's placed
VardaValar1: The Sil stories get a little stickier to place : )
VardaValar1: It might be kind to mention which book your story follows, just for education and fun
Arwen V1: I've never tried tolkien fanfic.. is it good?
VardaValar1: Also cuts down the "but it didnt' happen that way!"
VardaValar1: Some is good, some is not : )
VardaValar1: Take a look at our Story page as a starter
Arwen V1: okay =)
VardaValar1: We're easy to find, I hope : )
VardaValar1: Feel free to email me your own
VardaValar1: I can help with editing spelling, grammar, maybe some questions of canon
VardaValar1: The Tolkien books are your best way to check for what really happened
ArPharazonV: anyway, semi-"afk", time to write my eigth background... been a long time coming
ArPharazonV: *eighth
VardaValar1: Then find a hole in them, some of which Tolkien left on purpose
VardaValar1: That gives a lot of almost instant stories : )
VardaValar1: Pick something that interests you
VardaValar1: A character, event, question, setting
VardaValar1: We have several challenges for writers up as of Jan 6
VardaValar1: They are listed on the Stories page
Haleth V: Picking out characters that Tolkien didn't really write about is fun =)
VardaValar1: But ou can write anything Tolkienesque
VardaValar1: Aye, Haleth!
VardaValar1: He skims a lot of characters
VardaValar1: Even the major ones are often barely told about
VardaValar1: Gimli could use a lot of fleshing out
ArPharazonV: the stories of Tolkien is like the surface of a lake... you can dive in at any point and explore new depths :-)
Haleth V: I've always wanted to know more about Gilraen, which is why she's next on my infinite "to do list"
VardaValar1: Aragorn's time protecting the Shire and the rest of the Northlands as a ranger chief needs a lot
VardaValar1: Aye, Phar!
VardaValar1: hehe, Haleth!
Haleth V: Ah well... summer break's only 5 months away...
VardaValar1: Gilraen saw both the human and elf world, could have a lot of insight into both
VardaValar1: Writing, like gaming, is something we do in those odd moments when others are watching TV : )
ArPharazonV: be sure to read Appendix A, story of Aragorn and Arwen, for as much primary information :-)
Haleth V: Exactly =)
VardaValar1: Read the whole appendix : )
Haleth V: And will do, Phar =)
VardaValar1: Scan for goodies
VardaValar1: The time line can be amazing
Haleth V: Have done so before, but I'll read it closely
VardaValar1: Sam and Faramir have the same birthday ::-)
Haleth V: hehe
Haleth V: For now, though, I'm trying to write something on Aredhel
VardaValar1: Gilraen would have known a lot about the rangers, and the rangers often came to Rivendell
Haleth V: True
ArPharazonV: Aredhel... sister of Turgon?
VardaValar1: Don't let us sidetrack you! (Much)
Haleth V: Hehe
ArPharazonV: or am I confusing people?
Haleth V: And yes to Phar's question
ArPharazonV: ah
VardaValar1: We can multi-thread read : )
ArPharazonV: lots of info on her, even a bit about her past in Valinor...
Haleth V: Yup, been researching through the Silmarillion
ArPharazonV: I think there's also some info in HoME
Haleth V: Which books?
VardaValar1: I was a little concerned about bringing in a lot of outside story writers, as they could flood the story page
Haleth V: The more the merrier =)
VardaValar1: Jay of Lasgalen alone has like 57 drabbles
ArPharazonV: been a while since I read them... but there has to be a chapter about Maeglin etc, a lot of analysis there
VardaValar1: I pretty much agree, Haleth : )
Haleth V: And Phar, I'm writing Aredhel's story from her PoV. We know info about her, but I thought it'd be interesting to write about what she thought.
ArPharazonV: ah, allright
VardaValar1: They are arranged by Title, Author, Characters, so you can pick and choose comfortably
Haleth V: But it was funny... usually, there's several months between stories, but after Jay of Lasgalen came, there's been quite a lot.
VardaValar1: I'm trying to remember to put things like Sil, LotR, post-RotK fic
VardaValar1: Jay already had hers written
Haleth V: I'll do that with mine then, if/when I finish it
ArPharazonV: still, I'd skim the HoME books for information about the Silmarillion, there should be a seperate chapter about Maeglin, and a lot of new background information about Aredhel, if I recall correctly
VardaValar1: It's interesting to see the many point of views, aye
VardaValar1: We also take works in progress now : )
Haleth V: I'll send something in when I've got a bigger chunk =)
VardaValar1: They are listed on a separate page for brave readers : )
Haleth V: And Phar, which HoME books would you recommend?
VardaValar1: Thanks. Whenever you can is great : )
VardaValar1: (Flip through indices of HoME)
Haleth V: I'll try my best =)
VardaValar1: We take anything from very short to insanely long : )
Haleth V: I still remember my first ambitious project. I'm actually surprised it only took me three months to write it.
VardaValar1: Perfect Drabbles and Double Drabbles get a mention
ArPharazonV: aye, don't recall right now, but I'd recommend going through at least 4, 5, 10 and 11
VardaValar1: You must have gotten a lot of feeling for it
ArPharazonV: since they're about the Silm, mostly
VardaValar1: Thanks, Phar. Good tip
Haleth V: Thanks =)
Haleth V: And now could you give me the actual titles? =P
Haleth V: I'm pretty sure that I don't have 10 or 11, and if I don't, I need to check them out from the library
ArPharazonV: The Shaping of Middle-Earth, The Lost Roa d and Other Writings, Morgoth's Ring, The War of the Jewels
ArPharazonV: *Road
Haleth V: Right, I have 4 and 5 then, and I've read the other two.
Haleth V: And thank you =)
VardaValar1: (Blew my potential new book money with everyone else's in the family Christmas for a new computer)
ArPharazonV: if you can't find it there, try 12 as well, Peoples of MiddleEarth
ArPharazonV: some texts about different aspects of all books in the end
Haleth V: I wish my bookstore actually carried those books....
VardaValar1: You can order the books online
Haleth V: Hmm... I think I'll try that for my birthday, since I just spent all my money getting an iPod =)
VardaValar1: You guys do know there are some incredibly raunchy stories out there?
VardaValar1: Birthday is good : )
ArPharazonV: raunchy?
STEvilaim: :o
VardaValar1: X or worse rating
ArPharazonV: ah
Haleth V: In Tolkien?
Haleth V: That's... pretty.... strange.
ArPharazonV: in the fan-fiction :-)
VardaValar1: In fan fic
Haleth V: Wow.
STEvilaim: .. the internet is for porn? lol ;-)
ArPharazonV: involving every possible "combination"....
Haleth V: lol
VardaValar1: That's why I asked just how far you guys want to go with this
Haleth V: my friend made me listen to that song
VardaValar1: hehe, Scatha
Orodreth V has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Orodreth!
Haleth V: aiya
ArPharazonV: Aiya Oro
STEvilaim: i'd weed out the stuff that is specifically adult I think..
VardaValar1: That is why I was asking : )
VardaValar1: Don't allow at all or just put a warning?
ArPharazonV: or at least put them into a different category
STEvilaim: depends...
STEvilaim: some of it might be good... where the rest is...
Haleth V: Exactly how raunchy is it?
VardaValar1: As raunchy as people can imagine
ArPharazonV: detailed 18+ ?
Haleth V: Hmm, that might work.
Haleth V: Maybe even a different page marked "18+"
VardaValar1: Goes well past NC-17 into X+
Haleth V: Ah.
VardaValar1: Aye, I wasn't sure I should add any of it
STEvilaim: xxxxx++++++
VardaValar1: Maybe another page with password and you must be 18 or over and have eyewash?
ArPharazonV: eyewash?
Haleth V: hehe
VardaValar1: Maybe not password
FarmerMaggotV has left the room.
VardaValar1: Something to wash your eyeballs afterwards, like eyedrops
VardaValar1: joke
ArPharazonV: ah, I get it :-)
Haleth V: But if it's not vital to the story, maybe we could ask them to edit it.
Haleth V: And if it's necessary, maybe we could have a separate page?
VardaValar1: For some, it's the point of the story
VardaValar1: I lean towards a separate page if any at all
VardaValar1: I am into freedom of speech
ArPharazonV: at least a seperate page...
VardaValar1: But Mary-Sues, that can be worse : )
STEvilaim: if its the point of the story I dont think its going to have a lot of value... will it?
ArPharazonV: Mary-Sue... I keep forgetting what that means!
VardaValar1: Mary-Sue means the author puts self into story, as super person usually
ArPharazonV: ah
VardaValar1: Usually a tragic background but she can outdo anybody in LotR
Haleth V: Maybe we could have two categories: one "general" one where it follows the usual specs, and the "18+" where the reader is strongly cautioned.
VardaValar1: may be 10th member of Fellowship, etc
ArPharazonV: :-)
Haleth V: I prefer hole-fillers myself :-)
VardaValar1: I've simply not included the NC-17 and up
ArPharazonV: "LFG Priest to Mordor!"
VardaValar1: I love hole-fillers :-)
VardaValar1: heheh
Haleth V: hehe
Haleth V: I'll brb, need to request the HoME books
Orodreth V: Death to all Mary Sues!
VardaValar1: AU's are a separate type too, but can be marked easily enough on the main page
VardaValar1: Go, Oro! *enchants weapon*
Haleth V: And back.
ArPharazonV: lesser Mary-Sue slaying?
VardaValar1: There are a great many questions Tolkien teases us with
Orodreth V: /me gets out his crossbow and goes a-huntin'
ArPharazonV: a red glow?
VardaValar1: Beast-slayer would be appropriate, aye : )
Haleth V: Ah well, time for me to go.
ArPharazonV: or orange, for demon-slaying
Haleth V: The dogs are calling :p
ArPharazonV: woof woof!
ArPharazonV: Namarie!
Orodreth V: I'd lean towards demon.
Haleth V: Namarie!
VardaValar1: The NC-17's can be more canon than Mary-Sues, but haven't been including either
VardaValar1: Namarie
Haleth V: Hope I can come to another meeting, but it'll probably be a long time
ArPharazonV: what's NC-17?
VardaValar1: Demon is probalby right
Haleth V: But nice seeing you all again =)
VardaValar1: Email is good
Haleth V has left the room.
VardaValar1: or forum
VardaValar1: Movie rating, have to be 17 years of age or over
ArPharazonV: ah
Orodreth V: and that's not ignored like R is.
ArPharazonV: we normally go by 6, 12, 16, 18
Orodreth V: NC-17 is for very special movies.
ArPharazonV: 12 being violence
VardaValar1: It's really hard to rate a lot of things by age
VardaValar1: Tolkien would be pretty much all 12
ArPharazonV: yup
VardaValar1: Some would want to avoid "fluff" : )
VardaValar1: as being the scariest, and others would seek it
VardaValar1: Mostly, I'd love to see hole-fillers from our group : )
Orodreth V: You have my hole-filer..
VardaValar1: We have some fine work on our page
Orodreth V: Not much of a hole filler, but there you go.
VardaValar1: Aye, thanks
VardaValar1: You going to stop at one? The dike has many holes for our fingers ;-)
VardaValar1: Articles etc are also welcome, don't let me push you just to stories!
VardaValar1: I'm done unless you folk have more to add?
STEvilaim: I dunno about allowing all of it.... if the sole and entire purpose of the work is sexual gratifaction of the writer/reader (and some types of gratifcation (more)
Orodreth V: I have that other one I'm slowly working on.
VardaValar1: RP players maybe? : )
Orodreth V: But what little wiritng skil I have is being sucked away by school.
VardaValar1: Scatha, that's what I wonder.
STEvilaim: are rather disgusting/odd/whatever you want to call it) then should it really go on the page? We have held ourselves to a rather high standard to let some of this stuff in (more)
STEvilaim: (note: i'm not against all of it, just some obvious stuff more or less).
STEvilaim: dang 232 caracher limit :-(
VardaValar1: NC-17 is pretty obvious
Orodreth V: Death to aim chatrooms.
VardaValar1: I expected an immediate no from the group, really : )
Orodreth V: Think of it this way: fanfiction.net says no NC-17, and if it's too much for them... :p
VardaValar1: They didn't use to say no it
VardaValar1: They just had a warning
STEvilaim: I dont know if i'd rate some stuff even nc-17... is my point really
VardaValar1: aye, picking the boundary can be tough
VardaValar1: Some, if a few scenes were cut, would be excellent on our page
VardaValar1: Ok, this has been food for thought
VardaValar1: But Mary-Sues?
VardaValar1: At least a warning label on those horrors
Orodreth V: No Varda, they changed the rating system awhile back.
VardaValar1: with an AU
Orodreth V: They put their foot down at R.
VardaValar1: Aye, but I've been reading a long time, so it seems not so long : )
VardaValar1: R is a good stopper
Orodreth V: There are very few Mary Sues that have a high enough wiritng quality for our page anyways..
VardaValar1: I haven't had the problem with guild-folk
VardaValar1: Aye, they would be sent back for re-write : )
VardaValar1: Shall we bang the gavel for after-meeting and let Phar go clobber the bot? : )
STEvilaim: /me tests mta: sa again
ArPharazonV: oh, go ahead with chatting
ArPharazonV: I'm writing my Priest's bio
VardaValar1: *bangs gavel*
top

VardaValar1: After-meeting!
ArPharazonV: but if you'll join me, let's clobber the bot ;-)
VardaValar1: I considered it, very tempting!
VardaValar1: But drowning in work to do
ArPharazonV: aww
ArPharazonV: anyone else?
GwaihirValar: sorry I've been so silent here... but I have been reading.... I need to go take a nap now though... need to get a couple more hours of sleep before I head to work tonight...
ArPharazonV: Namarie, Gwai
VardaValar1: Namarie!
Oessala has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Orodreth's doppelganger!
GwaihirValar has left the room.
Orodreth V: that
Oessala: he is
VardaValar1: I'll keep this chat up in the background while working
Orodreth V: :D
VardaValar1: Oh my. Twin talk!
VardaValar1: I have another Jay of Lasgalen story to put up : ) Half-way into it
FladrifV has entered the room.
FladrifV: Aiya!
VardaValar1: Aiya Fladrif : )
VardaValar1: Welcome to After-meeting
LouieKisKowsKi has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Elros : )
VardaValar1: You guys heard we were in after-meeting and figured it was safe to come in? : )
LouieKisKowsKi: aiya, no the game just ended so i came upa nd saw the invite
ArPharazonV: Aiya Flad!
VardaValar1: Welcome to the gang : )
ArPharazonV: just making my priest's background on the forum! You should read it afterwards ;-)
VardaValar1: We were discussing the guild's story page, and just how high a rating we should allow, even with warnings
VardaValar1: Upshot, send Mary-Sues back for rewrite ;-)
VardaValar1: or shoot the story to end its misery
VardaValar1: Anything over R might be sent back for re-write
Srekal86 has entered the room.
Srekal86: /me waves
VardaValar1: A suggestion for putting those on a separate page, or just ignore their existence
VardaValar1: *waves*
VardaValar1: Welcome to the after-meeting
Srekal86: sorry, was away.
VardaValar1: Not a problem at all
VardaValar1: What's the URL for your Encyc again? I can just go dig it out : )
Srekal86: Tolkien Gateway?
VardaValar1: If you don't know... ;-)
Srekal86: hah, didn't want to blurt mine out if you meant another ;-)
Srekal86: http://tolkiengateway.net
VardaValar1: thanks
Srekal86: np
VardaValar1: I have a ton in my bookmarks
VardaValar1: You were considering a story page. Did you even decide on that?
Srekal86: a story page, like, hm I'm not sure I remember.
VardaValar1: Don't see one listed
VardaValar1: np
LouieKisKowsKi has left the room.
VardaValar1: meant to say ever, not even, pardon
VardaValar1: Probably enough story pages out there already
Srekal86: as in like fan fiction?
VardaValar1: yes
Srekal86: oh yes that's something we're considering, especially because with anyone being able to edit, it would be very easy to simply add parts to the fan fiction and have a community effort
Srekal86: we also started a hobbit script for a while but it never took off.
VardaValar1: You are talking about a group story?
Srekal86: right
Srekal86: nothing on a wiki is really one person's work, its all community efforts
VardaValar1: okies, thanks
Srekal86: how's Valar's encyclopedia doing?
VardaValar1: Moving right along
VardaValar1: It has many fronts
Srekal86: good to hear.
VardaValar1: The Annals of Arda part is pretty much completed
Srekal86: ah that's great! although I suppose encyclopedias are never completed ;-)
VardaValar1: The rest of it is may never be completed : ) Just goes on and on and on
VardaValar1: Too right
VardaValar1: Enjoying the news chat thread about which is more evil, Melkor or Sauron
Xseanzee disco has entered the room.
Xseanzee disco: greetings
VardaValar1: Never thought it was a contest. Melkor beats Sauron on evil
VardaValar1: Aiya Gil-galad!
VardaValar1: Welcome to after-meeting
Xseanzee disco: ty
Srekal86: oh thanks, and if you guys have any threads in your forum that I miss let me know and I'll post 'em
VardaValar1: You post ours?
ArPharazonV: not sure if Melkor beats Sauron on evil
Srekal86: well I don't really pick specific forums, just go around looking for any interesting threads
ArPharazonV: in the beginning perhaps, but he quickly lost his mind
ArPharazonV: in the end he was the insane one, and Sauron the only real evil
ArPharazonV: Melkor became a machine of destruction instead of a fiend with evil plans
Srekal86: hm, that's a good point, to be insane really isn't to be evil
ArPharazonV: Sauron was far more cunning, and in a way more evil that way
VardaValar1: Melkor was more personally corrupt and his reach spread farther
VardaValar1: He caught so many early
ArPharazonV: true, Melkor was more evil in the beginning
ArPharazonV: but if he rivalled Sauron in the end.. I doubt it
ArPharazonV: someone like Melkor would never have thought of charming people, entering Numenor or Eregion in a form of beauty
ArPharazonV: well, not since his inprisonment in Mandos, anyway
VardaValar1: Melkor did charm "seduce" in the beginning
Srekal86: although, maybe the purest evil is someone who insane...hm this is tough
ArPharazonV: in the beginning, yes... but in the end he lost control
VardaValar1: Being shoved into the Void is losing control :-)
ArPharazonV: and that's when Sauron became the more evil one in mind
VardaValar1: but Melkor continued to have a reach even from the Void
ArPharazonV: meh, I'm not sure
VardaValar1: Sauron continued to do the will of Melkor
ArPharazonV: either could be the winner, as far as I'm concerned
ArPharazonV: but how is evil measured?
ArPharazonV: by the destruction that he does, or by the cunning of his mind?
VardaValar1: It's not good ;-)
ArPharazonV: by the result, or by the intention?
VardaValar1: Melkor became a coward when he became corporeal. Sauron did not. Thus Sauron continued having the good trait of greater courage.
VardaValar1: Melkor became corrupt on his own. Sauron had to be seduced into it by Melkor
ArPharazonV: who is the more evil? the cowardly evil one, or the daring evil one?
VardaValar1: cowardice is an evil, thus answering the question
ArPharazonV: but is it always an evil?
ArPharazonV: would not courage serve evil better?
VardaValar1: Good improves the ability of evil, but that does not make a good trait evil
ArPharazonV: true, but it can make the person in question more evil
VardaValar1: Melkor corrupted himself, Maiar, many elves, early Man, and caused the deeds of Sauron
VardaValar1: He corrupted the very Music
VardaValar1: He made a wreck of the planet even as it was being formed
VardaValar1: He sent his fire beings to attack the Moon
ArPharazonV: true, that's evil :-)
VardaValar1: I agree that Sauron was evil too : )
VardaValar1: Perhaps we could say a less powerful evil was Sauron, but he also didn't need to be as powerful to do his evil
VardaValar1: Yet he merely continued what Melkor started.
VardaValar1: He expected Melkor to return, and would have the world ready for him, and try to help change the outcome of the Final Battle
VardaValar1: I have an unfair advantage as this is in the wee hours of the morning for Phar
VardaValar1: Might be a fun topic for a chat sometime tho
ArPharazonV: done! With my eighth biography!
ArPharazonV: Caligonn, the shadow-priest
VardaValar1: Congrats
VardaValar1: Think you might be posting to our rp anytime this week?
VardaValar1: Completing a bio should get you a medal of some kind : )
ArPharazonV: rp? this week? will do
VardaValar1: yay!
VardaValar1: I'm going to skip on out, I think
VardaValar1: Lot to do
VardaValar1: Take care!
