ArPharazonV: yeah, cutting out girlfriend is a much better idea!
Eonwe Valar: Remember that you didn't hear that one from me, Gel :}
Eonwe Valar: If it backfires, blame Phar! :}
ArPharazonV: (good thing nobody knows my real name and location)

Eonwe Valar: Whisper me now any news to expedite the meeting.
FinduilasV has entered the room.

FinduilasV: Aiya all :-)

Eonwe Valar: Heya Finduilas :}
Eonwe Valar: Whisper me any news you may have now to expedite the

Eonwe Valar: Any other member news?
Eonwe Valar: Ok, on to Web:
Eonwe Valar: Nothing reported from Varda's pages.
Eonwe Valar: Nothing to report yet from the Games Pages.
Eonwe Valar: Any other Web news?
Eonwe Valar: Make sure that if you haven't already, you've given Varda
you opinion on the question posed at last week's meeting.
Eonwe Valar: You can see it on the News page.
Eonwe Valar: Gaming:
Eonwe Valar: WoW General:

Eonwe Valar: Guild Questing: Lothar
Eonwe Valar: I got Auros, my level 60 Paladin, stuck in Ironforge due
to lag before Guild questing, so we ended up taking a trip to Uldaman :}
Eonwe Valar: Merry, my lvl 44 (got to 45) Priest, and Sauron's 60
Eonwe Valar: *Merry's lvl 45ish Paladin
Eonwe Valar: We were joined in the process by Beline/Dracxil, and later
on by Varda.
VardaValar1 has entered the room.
Eonwe Valar: Overall, fun had by all in Uldaman :}
FinduilasV: Aiya , Varda :D
ArPharazonV: Aiya Varda! not as insanely late as you feared :-)
VardaValar1: Yay :-)
VardaValar1: Snuck in between things : )
Eonwe Valar: Finduilas/Menel, did any of you in our European branch get together for
questing this week?
FinduilasV: yes , actually , Finduilasse and Orophin had a wee trip to
FinduilasV: with some others of Findus old guild, but there werem a few
mob magnets with us
FinduilasV: so all in all not very successful, but i did manage 30 k
exp ther ;D
Eonwe Valar: Orophin would be who's character again?
FinduilasV: Valandil's hunter
Eonwe Valar: Thanks.
FinduilasV: And we both need to go back as we need Scarab shells
FinduilasV: me one and he four
Eonwe Valar: hehe
FinduilasV: Not to mention that little hydra ...
Eonwe Valar: Gotta love it when you get all but one :}
FinduilasV: oh aye hihi
FinduilasV: else there were some minor confrontations with horde in
Shimmering flats which went all in all tnot too bad,
FinduilasV: There is no other news concerning guild questing]
Eonwe Valar: Thanks Finduilas :}
Eonwe Valar: Anyone play anything besides WoW?
Eonwe Valar: That they can talk about? :}
Eonwe Valar: besides Solitaire? :}
VardaValar1: That shuts a lot of mouths. Too many betas out there : )
VardaValar1: D&D tabletop count? : )
Eonwe Valar: I play BFME2 :}
Eonwe Valar: *played
VardaValar1: Elwing, Fangorn, and Eowyn say hi!
VardaValar1: Tried the Witch-king expansion yet?
Eonwe Valar: Heya to them :}
ArPharazonV: saw BFME2 expansion in the videostore, but didn't have the
money on me
Eonwe Valar: I haven't even bought it yet.
ArPharazonV: I'll try to get it tomorrow if it's still there
ArPharazonV: if so, I might let you know what it's like if I get to
play it ;-)
Eonwe Valar: I thought I remembered something about a collector's
edition for it, but I've seen no evidence of it even on the website, so
I assume I was mistaken.
VardaValar1: Everything gets a Collector's Edition eventually. ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Btw, apparently EA does release patches for BFME/BFME2, so
if someone interested in those games would like to keep a regular eye
on that for me and let us know via the forum and meetings, I'd
VardaValar1: I've been far from a computer all week. Strange strange. :
Eonwe Valar: Also let me know via E-mail to update the Games Page.
ArPharazonV: can't you automatically update them through an option in
Eonwe Valar: If I know they exist, aye.
Eonwe Valar: I haven't bothered with any sort of Multiplayer yet.
ArPharazonV: thought it was on the main menu, when you open the game
ArPharazonV: if you check it out once a month or so, you shouldn't fall
too far behind?
Eonwe Valar: I doubt I'm the only one, and since we've announced
patches for every other game we've played where we've actually known
about the patched, I thought I might provide the service for BFME as
well, given we have an interest in the gam
Eonwe Valar: *e.
Eonwe Valar: My distaste for EA could cause me to forget to check their
Eonwe Valar: Anyway, that's out there if we have anyone interested.
Eonwe Valar: For those who don't know, last I checked BFME2 is up to
about patch 1.6.
ArPharazonV: heh, guess I really should update it some time then...
Eonwe Valar: Only "have" to if you play Multiplayer :}
Shaggyjoe: I have to leave for work. I will say hello on the Yahoo
VardaValar1: How about on the regular forum? : )
VardaValar1: Click the Forum link on http://valarguild.org
Eonwe Valar: Is there any other gaming news before we move on to
Shaggyjoe: oh, will do that then :-)
Shaggyjoe: It was a pleasure.
FinduilasV: ahh :-( Namairie then ! and hope to see you again
Shaggyjoe: I will be around.
Shaggyjoe has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: Whisper Tolkien topics now.
Eonwe Valar: Unless you want one of mine.... :}
VardaValar1: Or several - always good : )
Eonwe Valar: Finduilas' topic :} Your floor, Finduilas :}
FinduilasV: Ooh , aye *blushes and bows*
FinduilasV: Well , it is about some unclarities concerning the end of
the second age and the beginning of the third
FinduilasV: Sam sings a song iat Weather top i think, about Gil Galad
and Elendil , or rather starts it
FinduilasV: but Aragorn sais the story should not be told with the
enemy so near
FinduilasV: and , cross referring to the Silmarillion , i wondered
about those events actually
FinduilasV: but i dont think Tolkien has written that tale down
somewhere or has he?
FinduilasV: There is the timeline at the end of The Lord of the Rings
but Itis a bit confusing
VardaValar1: Not sure of the question. But the end of the Second Age
could be said to be at the end of the Battle of the Last Alliance and
the overthrow of Sauron.
FinduilasV: aye , I mean the events leading up to that
VardaValar1: You mean the Battle of the Last Alliance?
FinduilasV: if memory serves me right, there was a several years long
siege of Barad dur , during which Anarion was killed
ArPharazonV: a siege of 7 years, I recall?
ArPharazonV: one could say it was all part of the Battle of the Last
Alliance, or the beginning of it
VardaValar1: The siege is part of it, aye
Nemoeverlonely has entered the room.
FinduilasV: 3434 the host of elves and men cfoss the misty mountains
FinduilasV: 3440 Anaion slain
ArPharazonV: yes, it started in 3434, when they marched on Mordor and
the siege began
FinduilasV: Aiya here
Eonwe Valar: heya
ArPharazonV: during the siege, in 3440, Anarion was slain
FarmerMaggotV has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: the siege ended in 3441 (?) when Sauron was overthrown at
last, Elendil died, the sword was broken etc
ArPharazonV: so you want to know about the 7 years of siege?
FinduilasV: are there any more details to be known?
VardaValar1: As in sorties made and who was there?
FinduilasV: for example/
FinduilasV: let me know every thing what you can about this whole
affair :-) . who marched when where with whom?
VardaValar1: That would take a good bit of digging.
VardaValar1: sorry, afk a few minutes
FinduilasV: then think about it and maybe discuss it next week :-) I am
a bit tired
Eonwe Valar: If memory serves, the armies all met in Rivendell for
preparations and training.
ArPharazonV: there are parts of it known, I faintly recall from the
Unfinished Tales a story about Thranduil's father going in, a mixup or
lack of cooperation between the different groups, and some groups
charging in too early
ArPharazonV: and getting beaten down pretty hard...
ArPharazonV: but not sure if that's at the final charge, or at the
beginning of the siege..
Eonwe Valar: Aye, that's in UT.
Eonwe Valar: I used that in our LotRO RP :}
ArPharazonV: ahh, that's why it sounds so familiar too, you did use it
FinduilasV: part two i guess eh?
Eonwe Valar: The Elves from Mirkwood were equipped with leather armor
at best. Not well equipped for standard warfare.
Eonwe Valar: Mirkwood lost alot of Elves in the battle because of that.
Eonwe Valar: Oropher got antsy and charged in.
Eonwe Valar: There was a delay between his charge, and the rest of the
army committing to the attack.
Eonwe Valar: (That's how I remember it anyway.)
Eonwe Valar: wb :}
ArPharazonV: right, I knew it was something like that
ArPharazonV: but unfortunately, there's not much more I know of the
Eonwe Valar: I think it was part two, Aye, Finduilas. During our stay
in Dale before riding to Erebor.
ArPharazonV: or where to find more about the battle
FinduilasV: i think it was a patrol that killed Anarion, weasnt it?
Eonwe Valar: Don't recall exactly.
Eonwe Valar: For more information, there's always the Valar Guild
Tolkien Encyclopedia :}
VardaValar1: which could use more articles on it ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Anarion joined the march to Mordor, but was slain by a
rock thrown from Barad-dur. His helm was crushed and so the helm of
Isildur was used as the Crown of Gondor from then on.
VardaValar1: Pardon, installing my book shelf back by my new wall
Eonwe Valar: That's what our article in the Encyclopedia says.
ArPharazonV: then what was used as the crown of arnor?
FinduilasV: where do you get that from?
Eonwe Valar: That's from our Valar Guild Encyclopedia, article by
FinduilasV: from which book ?
ArPharazonV: don't our articles usually have sources? ;-)
Eonwe Valar: I'd closed the frame already :}
Eonwe Valar: References: The Silmarillion, The Return of the King
FinduilasV: just having a llook
ArPharazonV: which probably means 3 possible sources: final text of the
Silmarillion, book VI of the Lord of the Rings, or the Appendices...
quite a lot of material to plow through
VardaValar1: I'm lucky to get people to put down that much for
reference. : )
ArPharazonV: true :-)
VardaValar1: Feel free to put in more detailed references for your
articles! : )
VardaValar1: Bookshelf now in, with books in it. *puff* Barbecue lit
Eonwe Valar: Wow, lighting a barbecue with one puff :}
ArPharazonV: what do you expect from the Vala of light!
VardaValar1: : )
FinduilasV: bookshlf with barbeque?
Eonwe Valar: Well, that's just it, I expected light, not heat, silly me
FinduilasV: whats that a new invention? :P
FarmerMaggotV has left the room.
VardaValar1: Stars have heat
Eonwe Valar: Yeah, but if the Valie of Light gave off heat too,
everything might wither in her presence :}
FarmerMaggotV has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Welcome back
Eonwe Valar: I guess you'd better be careful breathing from now on :}
VardaValar1: Lit it with a star
Eonwe Valar: Big breaths, long, slow exhalations :}
VardaValar1: Interesting to note that the ages tend to be considered
closed with the defeat of a major villain.
VardaValar1: *deep wind. Got Manwe's attention anyway.*
Eonwe Valar: :}
ArPharazonV: well, the defeats of major villians usually resulted in
new political systems
FinduilasV: but Sauron was killed twice at the end of an age, apart
from the minor detail that put a final end to him
ArPharazonV: new states, new leaders, new territory, etc
VardaValar1: Aye Phar
Eonwe Valar: Every age had their evil to overcome.
ArPharazonV: if the actual defeat is not enough to bring in the new
age, the resulting political differences surely would be
VardaValar1: Eru existed alone, made the Valar, they entered Arda and
formed it, Melkor was expelled.
VardaValar1: Ages of the Lamps, until destroyed
VardaValar1: Ages of the Two Trees until destroyed
VardaValar1: Ages of Darkness ended by Ages of the Stars. That's a
Eonwe Valar: The Valar were content to chase off Melkor until Eru's
Children got close to entering the picture it seems.
VardaValar1: Ages of the Stars, then the Moon rises as Fingolfin's
party steps out from the Helcaraxe "Grinding Ice" into Middle-earth.
The light frightens Morgoth.
VardaValar1: His attack on Tilion seems to be about the last time
flight can be used by any except Manwe, Varda, and their Maiar.
FinduilasV: i though Morgoth did not really fight himself?
VardaValar1: His attack was not on his own, but using "spirits of
VardaValar1: Possible balrogs. ; )
VardaValar1: But let's not open that can of balrog wings...
VardaValar1: First Age of the Sun started with the sun rising and that
seemed to trigger Men awake
VardaValar1: That ended with the Great Battle and overthrow of Morgoth
VardaValar1: Second Age: elves founded Linden and the Grey Havens. Men
got Numenor. Ended with the overthrow of Sauron.
VardaValar1: Third Age: After the overthrow of Sauron, the Eldar began
fading out as Men rose. Sauron returns, War of the Ring, Sauron finally
VardaValar1: But it doesn't end until Elrond leaves Middle-earth.
VardaValar1: Fourth Age: Reunified Kingdom begun by Aragorn. We don't
know the end of that Age.
FinduilasV: I wonder what happened there ...
VardaValar1: We could assume that it would take the end of the
Reunified Kingdom for the Fifth Age to begin.
FinduilasV: all that is known of that age is that Aragorns and Arwens
son took over the crown at the age of what around 90?
FinduilasV: Aragorn gives the sceptre to him when he was ready to lay
down his life
ArPharazonV: according to a work of fiction which hasn't made the
transfer from my mind to the paper/computer yet, the Fifth Age began
when after a few thousand years the Eastern peoples invaded, overthrew
the Reunified Kingdom,
VardaValar1: year 1541
VardaValar1: Eldarion's year of birth is what I'm hunting
ArPharazonV: wrecked the land into forming the current continent of
Europe, and made way for ancient civilizations of the Greek and Romans
etc, in a Dark Age where all knowledge was lost...
ArPharazonV: but that's still in my head and completely unfounded ;-)
ArPharazonV: I should really write some of that stuff down... might
make a nice fanfiction
FinduilasV: what fascinating story and in tolkiens line :-)
FinduilasV: Please do LD
ArPharazonV: hey, just my little attempt to fill the gap between Lord
of the Rings and the "more known" history :-)
VardaValar1: SR 1419 Aragorn and Arwen married. Guess 1 year later 1420.
VardaValar1: 121 years is the oldest Eldarion could have been.
FinduilasV: hmm if i recall it right under hundred was early for a
Numenorian king to take the crown]
FinduilasV: Would Aragorn take those standards for his realm?
FinduilasV: I mean that of Numenor before its fall and before the
Shadow fell on it
VardaValar1: Aragorn says, "For if I
will not go now, then I must soon go perforce. And Eldarion our son is
a man full-ripe for kingship."
VardaValar1: RotK AppA
VardaValar1: One odd comment Arwen makes is that even if she still had
the choice to go to Valinor after Aragorn's death, "There is now no ship that would bear me
VardaValar1: Yet Legolas makes a grey ship (not one of the white ones
usually used) and goes to Valinor in it.
VardaValar1: Why could he do that?
FinduilasV: he built it himself didn 't he?
VardaValar1: Arwen could have gone with him, one might think.
VardaValar1: If she had not already made her choice.
FinduilasV: she did not go back and stood to her word, accepted that
she could not go back
FinduilasV: other than Elwing
VardaValar1: So it seems an odd comment, that no ship would bear her
Eonwe Valar: Well, if the Valar would not allow any ship to bear her to
VardaValar1: That might be all she was referring to, aye.
VardaValar1: The Noldor were apparently all gone, that were full elves.
VardaValar1: The Sindarin, who were so strongly affected by even the
sight of a gull, seemed to have been very few.
VardaValar1: Celeborn left finally.
VardaValar1: The Sindarin House of Oropher lost numbers in the Battle
of the Last Alliance, and may not have had many left afterwards.
VardaValar1: The Silvans inherited the earth's elf places.
VardaValar1: Sindarins were very easily affected by any sign of the
sea, so they went from being very numerous to nothing.
VardaValar1: I find nothing on Thranduil's leaving.
VardaValar1: Some speculate that he married a Silvan, but would Oropher
have allowed it? Or was the marriage after Oropher's death?
VardaValar1: No way of knowing.
FinduilasV: hmm that would make Legolas half Silvan, half Sindar
VardaValar1: That's pure speculation though. : )
VardaValar1: He's most likely pure Sindarin. There's a chance that he's
ArPharazonV: and still I remember rumors here about him having Noldorin
blood as well...
ArPharazonV: but nobody can find the reference ;-)
FinduilasV: a chance he shares wirth me > Finduilas
VardaValar1: Aye. I never could track it down again. Very annoying
VardaValar1: Finduilas, Orodreth's daughter
FinduilasV: indeed but who is her mother?
VardaValar1: What makes you think Orodreth might have married a Silvan?
Eonwe Valar: Finduilas lived in Nargothrond during the First Age. Her
chance of having Noldoring blood is 100%.
FinduilasV: no not Silvan , Sindar
Eonwe Valar: *Noldorin
VardaValar1: ah ok, sorry
ArPharazonV: sure she has Noldorin blood, but are we sure that's all
Eonwe Valar: Do we have reason to believe Orodreth would've married a
FinduilasV: they wer e quite in contact with the folk of Cirdan , nae?
FinduilasV: no , just speculation
FinduilasV: mind play , if ye like
ArPharazonV: after all, why couldn't he have?
VardaValar1: Orodreth was a cautious type, seems too bold a move for him
ArPharazonV: by the way, do we even know Finduilas was born in
VardaValar1: Second son of Finarfin, so he should have had plenty of
chances to meet a nice Noldor
ArPharazonV: for all we know her mother could be of the Vanyar of
Valinor, and she chose to go along with her father :-)
FinduilasV: no , all we know is she was with him
FinduilasV: and a nice lass , ;loyal and brave
FinduilasV: but aye, thats the way my thoughts went as i mulled over
the possiblilities ;-)
VardaValar1: Finarfin's mother was Indis, a Vanya, so it seems they
would have mentioned another Vanya in the mix.
VardaValar1: It would have been unusual and in the royal line, worth
ArPharazonV: well, Indis was a special case
ArPharazonV: as she was a "second wife", and this had much consequence
in the story of the 3 brothers (or half-brothers)
VardaValar1: That's one reason I suspect Thranduil married a Sinda, as
a Silvan would have been unusual enough to be worthy of mention.
VardaValar1: True Phar
VardaValar1: She also caused the line to be different in appearance,
ArPharazonV: in general, except these very rare and significant cases,
the wives and mothers seem quite unmentioned in the stories
FarmerMaggotV has left the room.
ArPharazonV: there are often some trivial references, but often the
child was simply added to the story without reminiscing back to the
other half of the genepool, so to speak
VardaValar1: Since royal lines are usually reckoned from the father,
except rare cases such as Silmarien, that was all that was needed
VardaValar1: hmm, we need an article on Finduilas
VardaValar1: She is just mentioned as part of other elf articles
FinduilasV: I will ;-)
FinduilasV: you get it next week or the week after no worries , i have
to see how my days off are
VardaValar1: I won't hold you to a deadline : )
FinduilasV: oki dok :-) , and now dear friends , i have to take my
leave and strike colours
VardaValar1: I, too, shall fold the standard.
FinduilasV: I am soo dead ;'-)
VardaValar1: Rest well. : )
FinduilasV: /me yawns sleepily
ArPharazonV: Namarie, Finduilas!
ArPharazonV: will see you in WoW, I'm sure :-)
Eonwe Valar: Sleep well :}
FinduilasV: oh you will, you will (*chuckles*
Eonwe Valar: Ok, let's call it here :}
Eonwe Valar: *Bangs Gavel*
Eonwe Valar: Go get some sleep or play some games, everyone :}
FinduilasV has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: afk for a sec
Eonwe Valar: back
VardaValar1: Welcome back :-)
Haleth V has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: that didn't take too long!
ArPharazonV: Aiya Haleth!
Haleth V: Aiya! =)
VardaValar1: Haleth! Hi there :-)
VardaValar1: Welcome to After-meeting : )
Eonwe Valar: Heya Haleth
Haleth V: Thanks =)
Haleth V: It's been a busy month for me, and it doesn't look like it'll
get any better, but I should be able to make the next meeting on time.
ArPharazonV: just browsing through chapter 3 of a webcomic I'm
following... reading through archives is always fun :-)
Haleth V: Heheh, sure is. Which webcomic?
Haleth V: Ah.
ArPharazonV: heard of it?
ArPharazonV: I've heard that it's quite famous, though I only
discovered it a few months ago
Haleth V: Heard of it, never got around to reading it, I'm afraid
VardaValar1: We tend to hang around a while after the meeting, so you
can still catch us, like today. : )
Haleth V: I'll try and do so in the future. =) But I miss the Tolkien
discussions the most, to be honest.
VardaValar1: We can start up new ones. ;-)
Haleth V: Well, my time today's rather limited as well.
Haleth V: The teachers decided to load us with as much homework/tests
as possible before the holidays.
Haleth V: Yep. :P
VardaValar1: We'll still be here when you can come around. : )
Haleth V: Always good to know. =)
Haleth V: I'll try and swing by every so often
ArPharazonV: well, but when the holidays come, you'll have more free
VardaValar1: That would be nice
Haleth V: Yes to Phar's question. :P
Haleth V: That's about the only nice part to it.
VardaValar1: About to do a test for a potential Full Member
VardaValar1: Wish her luck : )
ArPharazonV: good luck to her!
Haleth V: Ditto to Phar! =)
ArPharazonV: always interesting to meet new female members, there seem
to be so few Tolkien-names around, always curious what they pick :-)
Haleth V: True.
VardaValar1: Lots of unused female names for them in the guild. : )
Haleth V: Oh, a quick question - will we be having a meeting next week?
It'll be Christmas Eve.
VardaValar1: It may be short : )
VardaValar1: More of a howdy to whoever wanders by
