MrMonkey2002Blah: ja

VardaValar1: We need to watch for guys coming online late, who will be lost
ArPharazonV: indeed
Srekal86: Was I late? I just got the invitation.
VardaValar1: I'll put up a note on the News in case someone checks it

Eonwe Valar: Web News:
Eonwe Valar: Your floor, Varda :}
VardaValar1: Thank you
VardaValar1: On the AIM page with our contact info,
VardaValar1: Arathorn asked me to take it back
VardaValar1: so if your AIM name is incorrect there, please email me (or catch me on AIM if very lucky)
VardaValar1: I don't understand his programming, but the name updates seem easy enough to add
VardaValar1: and I added one and it worked
VardaValar1: Check yours here:
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/arathorn/quickaim/quickaim.htm
VardaValar1: New link for the Links page:
ArPharazonV: oh, this is new
VardaValar1: The people running it asked us to link with them:
VardaValar1: http://tbs.com/stories/story/0,,70708,00.html
ArPharazonV: when clicking a link, instead of replacing the old site on firefox, it makes a new tab instead..
ArPharazonV: go go firefox 1.5
VardaValar1: On our page or firefox in general?
Srekal86: actually I think that would have to do with the HTML, not FF
ArPharazonV: when clicking the links here in chat :-)
VardaValar1: Neat : )
VardaValar1: Story page, 2 new ones:
ArPharazonV: it's pretty cool indeed... glad I upgraded today
VardaValar1: By Cassia and Siobhan
VardaValar1: "Never Alone"
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/ficti on/authorsT/CassiaSiobhan/stories/NeverAlone/NeverAlone1.htm
VardaValar1: "You Make Me Home"
VardaValar1: http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/ficti on/authorsT/CassiaSiobhan/stories/YouMakeMeHome/Home.htm
VardaValar1: Both have illustrations by Cassia-(TV)
VardaValar1: The second also has an original poem by Cassia
VardaValar1: Art page:
VardaValar1: That art is also on Cassia's art cave
VardaValar1: New cave today
VardaValar1: Cave of TJ-(TV)
VardaValar1: He made magnificent maps of Middle-earth
VardaValar1: He also shows an archetype of a game he's making
VardaValar1: He did it as a tabletop with his map
VardaValar1: He is asking for help from a programmer in Valar to make a simple PC game with it, free distribution
VardaValar1: I don't know all the angles on that, but if you'd like to talk to him
VardaValar1: he speaks French, but can email written English, giving him time to translate
VardaValar1: He may be able to talk on AIM, we can work that out
VardaValar1: He says he is a mapmaker, not a programmer, and really needs help : )
VardaValar1: I'm done with web news
Eonwe Valar: Thanks Varda.
Eonwe Valar: Any more web news?
VardaValar1: Some more have articles and stories in the works, not finished
VardaValar1: and art
Eonwe Valar: ok
ArPharazonV: web news? well, there's all the news on the wow websites
ArPharazonV: new race announced, foodbranch announced
Eonwe Valar: Web News involving Valar Guild Pages :}
ArPharazonV: ahh
VardaValar1: Web news means mainly what our group put on our site : )
Eonwe Valar: But yes, I saw those :}
VardaValar1: The others go under Gaming
ArPharazonV: so this would fall more under gaming?
ArPharazonV: ok
VardaValar1: or Tolkien
top

Eonwe Valar: Gaming News:
ArPharazonV: well, it's web anyway ;-) but i'll remember for next time
VardaValar1: It's not our web news : )
VardaValar1: but aye
Eonwe Valar: Turbine has released some info on a new location in LotRO: Thorin's Halls.
Eonwe Valar: This would be in the Iron Mountains, not Erebor.
Eonwe Valar: Pardon, Blue Mountains, not Iron Mountains.
VardaValar1: aka Ered Luin
Eonwe Valar: Blizzard released some "info" on April 1st :}
VardaValar1: April Fool's oboy : )
Eonwe Valar: Pharazon mentioned it above :} Feel free to check it out at their homepage: www.blizzard.com or www.worldofwarcraft.com
Eonwe Valar: On some of BLizzard's WoW forums, you might also find the much anticipated 1.11 patch notes :}
ArPharazonV: According to this, there'll be a chain of fastfood-restaurants with a Warcraft-theme
ArPharazonV: Burgercraft, I think
Eonwe Valar: Check out their awesome Hunger System!
ArPharazonV: as well as the new announcement concerning the Alliance race of the expansion...
ArPharazonV: wisps!
VardaValar1: (That would be the 8 D&D players here Friday)
Eonwe Valar: WoW Lothar:
ArPharazonV: Yes, the wisp... their power demonstrated by the death of Archimonde, the wisps have returned to join the Alliance, with a new feature:
ArPharazonV: permanent death
Menelvagor Valar has entered the room.
Menelvagor Valar: sorry I'm late.
ArPharazonV: Aiya Menel
ArPharazonV: permanent death, you read it right! The wisps can detonate themselves, causing their own final destruction
Eonwe Valar: This week's questing took Merry, Varda, Sauron, Eonwë, and Draxcil into Razorfen Kraul, and then Merry, Varda, Draxcil and Eonwë into Razorfen Downs.
VardaValar1: (WoW Lothar for real above)
Eonwe Valar: Aye, this is for real :}
Eonwe Valar: (Although, maybe I should've tried to say we five-manned Ragnaros first.. Anyway, on with the questing :})
Eonwe Valar: We five went into the Kraul looking for a boss for Merry's Warrior quest.
Eonwe Valar: We had also picked up another quest from a body at the cemetery at the bottom of the Great Lift.
Eonwe Valar: (The Great Lift links Thousand Needles with the Barrens at the Southern Edge of the Barrens)
Eonwe Valar: We pretty well cleaned out the place, and picked up 2 quests on the inside as well.
Eonwe Valar: We helped a Night Elf find a pendant and return it to his love, and also helped a Goblin escape the Kraul.
Eonwe Valar: We dealt with the Crone of the Kraul for Lonebrow, and dispatched Roguug for Merry's Warrior quest.
Eonwe Valar: Then we went into Razorfen Downs to Bring the Light.
Eonwe Valar: We fought our way through zombies and Liches to Amemnar the Coldbringer for Varda's Priestess.
Eonwe Valar: Dealing with him, we took down the Quilboar side, finding a guy willing to teach Goldthorn Tea and another needing our help in deactivating an idol.
Eonwe Valar: We also hit the gong and had fun there :}
Eonwe Valar: A little further on we found a skeleton boss dancing on a hill of bones with an army of skeletons at the bottom.
Eonwe Valar: We dealt with him too :}
Eonwe Valar: Btw, if you go in there, get close, but stand back enough that you don't draw aggro. He likes to talk :}
Eonwe Valar: By the end of the run, my Undead-slaying desire was sated, and Merry was outfitted for up to lvl 40 :}
Eonwe Valar: And that concludes the WoW Lothar Report :}
VardaValar1: (and it was 5am, 6am EST)
Eonwe Valar: Anything from the Valar Guild guys in Europe?
ArPharazonV: I saw Valandil, so I can confirm that he's still with us :-)
Eonwe Valar: Cool :}
VardaValar1: Yay : )
ArPharazonV: was a few days ago, so didn't get to congratulate him for his birthday
VardaValar1: Next time you spot him then : )
ArPharazonV: indeed :-)
ArPharazonV: normal raiding this week, was a bit messed up because Blizzard decided to reset all raid-instances on friday evening, with a 9 minute warning
Eonwe Valar: Any other gaming news?
ArPharazonV: so we got to start BWL all over again
ArPharazonV: but nothing very special from me
ArPharazonV: no other games played by me either
VardaValar1: *passes Phar comfort food, aka chocolate*
ArPharazonV: and I actually don't like chocolate
ArPharazonV: but thanks anyway
ArPharazonV: ...done with my topic, btw
Eonwe Valar: Any other gaming news?
Eonwe Valar: Thanks, Phar.
VardaValar1: No food fight starting, chocolate was eaten by the rest in the chat room.
Eonwe Valar: 1.10 Patch for WoW is out, if it weren't obvious :}
VardaValar1: New month, be sure to run your Blizzard characters through Bnet for preservation : )
ArPharazonV: the messiest patch in the history of WoW
VardaValar1: Weather was a pleasant addition : )
VardaValar1: No argument, Phar : )
Eonwe Valar: Priest changes were nice.
ArPharazonV: true, though I only saw it once... rain in Feralas
ArPharazonV: was beautiful though
Eonwe Valar: I hear ther eare issues with procs.
Eonwe Valar: Overall nice stuff in the patch though.
ArPharazonV: Decursive, the addon for removing debuffs in raid, extremely useful, had to be upgraded three times... found it hard to adapt to the new patch :-)
Eonwe Valar: One more thing I'd like to add.
VardaValar1: My priest is nearly all Holy spec now, call Varda into your instances : )
Eonwe Valar: I've updated the Obscure Quests thread in the WoW section of the Forum to include the quests we found during Our questing.
Eonwe Valar: If you find any others off the beaten path, reply to that thread and I'll add them to the list.
Eonwe Valar: Whisper Tolkien topics to me.
top

Eonwe Valar: Tolkien:
Eonwe Valar: Varda's floor.
VardaValar1: What does Tolkien consider a Hero? Who were some of them? Can there be different kinds?
VardaValar1: Should he have added other types as well?
VardaValar1: Whoever is here, please type Aye : )
VardaValar1: Aye : )
Eonwe Valar: Aye :}
ArPharazonV: Aye :-)
Eonwe Valar: From the examples we have in LotR, Heroes aren't just the big strong guys.
Eonwe Valar: It's the guys willing to stand up and do what needs to be done, whether they want to or not.
ArPharazonV: so they're willing, whether they want to or not... is that possible?
Eonwe Valar: Frodo didn't want to take the Ring to Mount Doom, but he took it up anyway.
Eonwe Valar: They would rather stay home in bed than go, but they go anyway :}
GwaihirValar: aye-ish ;-)
Eonwe Valar: To want to do something and to be willing to do something are two different things.
Eonwe Valar: I can want an XBox 360, but I have to also be willing to pay $400 for it.
ArPharazonV: :-)
ArPharazonV: I must concede... you have a point
VardaValar1: I want freedom from Sauron, but go to Mt. Doom past all that awful travel and the baddies? Hardly any help?
VardaValar1: Let George do it.
Eonwe Valar: He chose to do want needed to be done despite his own preferences.
Eonwe Valar: *do what
GwaihirValar: Well... I think really the representation of heroism is more thna willingness... but the action and attempt itself. For example, some of the characters didn't really seem 'willing'(for example, Sam almost seemed forced sometimes)...
GwaihirValar: yet they still DID those acts for whatever reasons... or attempted at the very least.
ArPharazonV: how about those who are willing, but don't succeed?
Eonwe Valar: Action and attempt would be an expression of willingness.
VardaValar1: Trying even if they don't succeed is heroic in Tolkien, Nordic style
VardaValar1: Hurin
Eonwe Valar: Aye
Eonwe Valar: There was a slim chance the Felloswhip's quest would succeed.
Eonwe Valar: It would've been heroic even had it not succeeded.
ArPharazonV: it would've been heroic, but they wouldn't have been recognized as heroes... or even remembered, perhaps
ArPharazonV: history is written by the victor :-)
GwaihirValar: that was why I included attempt... as not always success was accompanied....
VardaValar1: Being remembered was not what made them heroic in Tolkien's eyes
Eonwe Valar: Well, no one knew about the quest so it would've been hard to remember them :}
VardaValar1: Heroism can be unsung and completely unknown, but is still heroism.
Eonwe Valar: Aye
FladrifV: time to seek shelter....Namarie inhabitants of the world
Eonwe Valar: Sleep well
VardaValar1: Mara mesta
ArPharazonV: Namarie Flad
FladrifV: Raises one eye
FladrifV: I have one thing to add to this meeting
FladrifV: *smiles* you all know what took means
FladrifV: ?
FladrifV: acording to my swedish friends it means in swedish fool
FladrifV: quite interesting
ArPharazonV: fool of a fool!
VardaValar1: Right on
VardaValar1: Gandalf was doing a word joke
ArPharazonV: well, perhaps not Gandalf intentionally... who's to say Took means fool in the hobbit-language or in Westron? ;-)
Orodreth V has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya Orodreth : )
Eonwe Valar: Hey Orodreth
Orodreth V: Aiya...2?
Eonwe Valar: afk for a sec
FladrifV: I think tolkien was perfectly aware of this
Oessala has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: Tolkien, yes, that seems likely
VardaValar1: No doubt about it
ArPharazonV: but not Gandalf ;-)
Orodreth V: What time are meetings GMT right now, so that I can make it next week? :p
VardaValar1: 22:00
FladrifV: If I hear more interesting things I will tell them here ....Namarie *closes the other eye*
VardaValar1: On News in GMT these days
ArPharazonV: Namarie Flad
VardaValar1: Thanks, Ent : )
Orodreth V: Thanks, Varda.
VardaValar1: Ok, one more question off-topic
VardaValar1: Anyone here looked at Wikis? Want to try putting our stuff on one, with permissions?
VardaValar1: Nothing goes up without the editor(s) ok?
Eonwe Valar: I don't look at Wikis.
Orodreth V: I used to live on Wikipedia.
Orodreth V: They have alot of great Tolkien stuff there.
ArPharazonV: I occasionally look at certain Wikis, but I have little idea of how they work and I have never intended to add to them
Orodreth V: I rarely edited, but I've done my fair share.
FladrifV has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: Guess that settles it.
Eonwe Valar: *Bangs Gavel*
Eonwe Valar: Meeting adjourned.
top

After-meeting
VardaValar1: Settles what?
Eonwe Valar: That the meeting is over.
Eonwe Valar: It's been quiet, so I assume no more discussion.
VardaValar1: Ok, so can we find some of these Tolkien Wikis?
VardaValar1: Here's Srekal's:
VardaValar1: http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Main_Page
VardaValar1: Tolkien Gateway
VardaValar1: Any others for examples?
ArPharazonV: a simple search engine gives me http://www.thetolkienwiki.org/wiki.cgi
ArPharazonV: http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
Oessala: not Tolkien only, so there's some stuff they won't allow for obscurity, but: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_Earth
Oessala: (only a jumping off point, if course)
VardaValar1: Thanks
Arwen V1: if a wiki is basically an encycopedia, why dont we make one? We have an encyclopedia
VardaValar1: We are considering it, Arwen
Arwen V1: cool =)
Eonwe Valar: It gives the general audience the chance to update it though, so it's a balance between having complete control and having to scan everything that goes through on it.
Arwen V1: I'm not the most Tolkien knoweldgeable person, but I'd be willing to help with that
VardaValar1: We can prevent anyone from adding to it until we check it out
VardaValar1: I already look at everything before it goes through
VardaValar1: alone, I might add
VardaValar1: Would be nice to have help
VardaValar1: We could try a demo thing, and if it stinks, dump it as we have with other tries at things.
Arwen V1: true
Eonwe Valar: afk for a sec
Star of Phaet: well, I should go sleep
Star of Phaet: namarie folks
ArPharazonV: Namarie
Star of Phaet has left the room.
VardaValar1: Namarie
Menelvagor Valar: sleepy time here as well.
Menelvagor Valar: Namarie
ArPharazonV: Namarie
Menelvagor Valar has left the room.
VardaValar1: Namarie
Eonwe Valar: back
ArPharazonV: Aiyata
Eonwe Valar: Hantal
Eonwe Valar: Another new addition to the RP.
VardaValar1: cool
VardaValar1: I was trying to drag in Merry as our new dwarf. He likes them a lot
Eonwe Valar: I'd like us all to get together sometime to talk about the RP.
ArPharazonV: sounds good to me.... but we'll have to take timezones into account... what time would you have in mind?
Eonwe Valar: Maybe a Friday before Guild Questing or Sunday after meeting.
Eonwe Valar: Not sure I'll have time this week though.
VardaValar1: That's what everyone says, Eonw
Eonwe Valar: heh
VardaValar1: No one can get together too bad
VardaValar1: We were doing it after main meetings
ArPharazonV: well, I gotta go to bed soon... last regular college (of the year, probably)
ArPharazonV: so for this last week I have to go to bed relatively early
Eonwe Valar: sleep well and good luck.
VardaValar1: Good night!
ArPharazonV: so next week at this time would be good :-)
Eonwe Valar: Nothing I know of due next Monday yet, so that may work.
ArPharazonV: well, will be saving and sending
VardaValar1: Thank you : )
ArPharazonV: it seems, btw, the normal chatroom still isn't available yet
VardaValar1: That is weird
VardaValar1: Thanks for checking
Eonwe Valar: www.phil.unt.edu/~hargrove/dragons.html for anyone interested. Was scanning the yahoo. search for Tolkien and found this one from someone at my university.
ArPharazonV: saved
VardaValar1: hehe - the cover artist hadn't had time to read the book, said the Ballantine agent
VardaValar1: I've heard a lot of horror stories about book covers
Eonwe Valar: This guy seems to have alot of Tolkien stuff according to yahoo
VardaValar1: Generally the artist is given a passage from the book to illustrate, and that is all he has to go on
ArPharazonV: sent
VardaValar1: Thanks
Eonwe Valar: Attendance sent.
VardaValar1: thanks
Eonwe Valar: MP
ArPharazonV: Namarie all
Eonwe Valar: Sleep well
Eonwe Valar: Take care
Eonwe Valar: Have fun
ArPharazonV: thanks, you too
ArPharazonV has left the room.
VardaValar1: I think I recognize Hargrove. Tom Bombadil article?
Eonwe Valar: He has one on BOmbadil and Old Man Willow
Eonwe Valar: pull off the /dragons to get to his homwpage.
VardaValar1: Another Texan : )
VardaValar1: http://www.phil.unt.edu/~hargrove/
Eonwe Valar: yep
Eonwe Valar: He's a Professor in the Philosophy department at UNT
Eonwe Valar: Too bad he's wrong about Tom BOmbadil :}
Eonwe Valar: Assuming I remember his paper correctly anyway :}
Xseanzee disco has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Aiya
VardaValar1: Nice to stimulate thought anyway : )
Xseanzee disco: hey :-)
Eonwe Valar: Aye :}
Eonwe Valar: Heya :}
VardaValar1: Aiya Gil-galad : )
MrMonkey2002Blah has left the room.
Eonwe Valar: Btw, those habanero Doritos do have a bite :}
VardaValar1: For sure : )
Eonwe Valar: A glass of Milk isn't quite so useful against them as against the Jalepeno ones :}
VardaValar1: Unfortunately. Try cheese melted on them? : )
Eonwe Valar: Hadn't thought of that one.
VardaValar1: Bread and milk combo is best according to Sauron
VardaValar1: Dry bread
VardaValar1: Rub it on your tongue
VardaValar1: He raised habaneros : )
VardaValar1: He's on WoW right now : )
Eonwe Valar: :}
VardaValar1: Don't lick your hand ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Too late :}
VardaValar1: He laughed and said "oh well"
Eonwe Valar: Been licking the powder off my fingers the whole time :}
Eonwe Valar: It burns, more than jalepenos, but I can handle it a few chips at a time :}
Eonwe Valar: Just hope I don't kill off my taste buds this way :}
VardaValar1: Nice having known them, you can say
Eonwe Valar: hehe
Eonwe Valar: They were fun while they lasted :}
VardaValar1: hehe
Eonwe Valar: afk for a sec
Eonwe Valar: back
VardaValar1: hi
Eonwe Valar: hey
Eonwe Valar: I'm gonna go ahead and head out.
Eonwe Valar: Take care all, good night, sleep well, and have fun.
