(transcript from Ar-Pharazon-V):
Before-meeting:
You have just entered room "Valar Guild Meetingplace."
Eonwe Valar: 7 people around 30 min before meeting. You aren't plotting something, are you? :}
ArPharazonV: Aiya
VardaValar1: Aiya
VardaValar1: Of course :-)
ArPharazonV: we're always plotting
musics4me2: Always plotting.....
TurgonjustTurgon: fired up chat just because I am watching Armageddon lol
VardaValar1: Good idea, Eonwe
ArPharazonV: I just opened AIM, better early than late
VardaValar1: Still no transcript for last week
ArPharazonV: I read the news about the transcript
ArPharazonV: I feel a little guilty
Eonwe Valar: I sent one to you twice, Varda
VardaValar1: Hoping to have seventeen or eighteen of them come in this week
VardaValar1: ?
VardaValar1: Now that sounds worrisome
VardaValar1: Did you get a failure notice?
Eonwe Valar: I sent one to you on Tuesday, and another on THursday after reading your post on the News
Eonwe Valar: no
musics4me2: Ah, Eonwe -- did you get my email about the guild games page?
Eonwe Valar: Farmer Maggot?
VardaValar1: I'll check to see if you've been blocked in a sec. Emailing a guy about his article on Gondolin
musics4me2: Yea
Eonwe Valar: THen yes I did :}
musics4me2: Ok :-)
ArPharazonV: hmm.... did you send us an email about it, Eonwe?
ArPharazonV: if so, I did not get it
musics4me2: brb on guild AIM screenname heh
Eonwe Valar: Not yet, actually,.. I've been swamped alot more than I thought I would be
ArPharazonV: oh, ok
FarmerMaggotV has entered the room.
musics4me2 has left the room.
ArPharazonV: 2 mails I'm actually looking forward to :-)
Eonwe Valar: I'm also getting into a new computer here, so gotta transfer my stuff over, but I'll do my best to send them tonight
ArPharazonV: Eonwe's mail, and the wow beta confirmation :-)
Eonwe Valar: :}
Eonwe Valar: My bro actually got into the stress test beta, but since it would take an average of 3 weeks to download, he gave up :}
ArPharazonV: lol
ArPharazonV: *note to self: quit using that lettercombination*
Eonwe Valar: seems we just can't win :}
Eonwe Valar: btw, anyone here know anythign about Physics?
ArPharazonV: a bit
Celebrimbor V: somewhat
Eonwe Valar: you know anything about the Calculus bit? :}
ArPharazonV: at least, I made it through the course in highschool
ArPharazonV: Calculus bit?
ArPharazonV: doesn't ring a bell
Eonwe Valar: then bit that uses Calculus to getits equations :}
ArPharazonV: http://www.calc101.com/
TurgonjustTurgon: I know some physics, but I for no idea what you talking about lol
ArPharazonV: http://archives.math.utk.edu/visual.calculus/
ArPharazonV: http://www.calculus.org/
Eonwe Valar: I'm trying to find the height somethign was dropped from, given the last few meters, how long it took to travel that distance given, and the "known" acceleration caused by gravity
TurgonjustTurgon: oh and far as I know, Arathorn is in the regular WoW beta
Eonwe Valar: ah yes, the European beta :}
Eonwe Valar: congrats to Arathorn :}
ArPharazonV: oh, nice
ArPharazonV: g: 9.81
Eonwe Valar: afk for a quick sec
TurgonjustTurgon: US even I think
ArPharazonV: 9.81 was the acceleration caused by gravity, I think
TurgonjustTurgon: I think the accellaration for falling objects is something like hmg or so
ArPharazonV: can vary a little with the hight, is usually rounded to 9.8
TurgonjustTurgon: height times mass times gravity
FarmerMaggotV: anyone here have any expirience w/ unix and disk quotas?
ArPharazonV: right
ArPharazonV: what?
ArPharazonV: sorry
VardaValar1: Arathorn might
TurgonjustTurgon: that's asking a mathematician if he knows anything about art lol
FarmerMaggotV: yeah, asking him now
ArPharazonV: I'm starting college tomorrow! How fun!
VardaValar1: Congrats :-)
VardaValar1: Pardon, afk
ArPharazonV: looking at my schedule, I don't have to start until 1 pm
FarmerMaggotV: I'm doing system upgrades so I'll probably pop off sometime during the meeting :P, clean install so there's a bunch....
FladrifV has left the room.
ArPharazonV: don't have to get up until 11 am...
FarmerMaggotV: nice
ArPharazonV: which means I don't have to leave early for the meeting :-)
ArPharazonV: from here, 3 hours until bedtime
Eonwe Valar: back
FladrifV has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: Aiyata
ArPharazonV: to both
Eonwe Valar: ah, so Arathorn got into stress test and has been playing like crazy to win one of the spots in the regular closed beta?
Eonwe Valar: Hantal
ArPharazonV: good for him
ArPharazonV: I hope he makes it
Eonwe Valar: was asking Turgon, don't know for sure, but that's what it sounsd like :}
ArPharazonV: oh, ok
Celebrimbor V: so does anyone play Star Wars Jedi Academy?
Celebrimbor V: lol
ArPharazonV: :-X
Eonwe Valar: 1.6s to go 34.9 m with constant accerleration of 9.8 m/s2 :}
Celebrimbor V: lol
Celebrimbor V: what Ar?
ArPharazonV: that from the websites, Eonwe? ;-)
ArPharazonV: well, actually
TurgonjustTurgon: I have no idea what part of the beta test Arathorn actually plays in, talked to him too little to get the info from him
TurgonjustTurgon: but from what I heard, I concluded it was the regular
ArPharazonV: the :-X was a denial of your question, an expression of the silent answer I would give you
Celebrimbor V: I figured as much
TurgonjustTurgon: I could be wrong though, so don;t pin me on it
ArPharazonV: it could be interpreted as 'No, I don't play it'
Celebrimbor V: lol
VardaValar1: Reason Eonwe's updating Games page is so we can find who plays what
ArPharazonV: hey, I played Starcraft again a few days ago
VardaValar1: Get trustworthy fun buddies to game with
VardaValar1: cool
ArPharazonV: had to make a new account, the other was gone :-(
VardaValar1: What is your name for SC?
ArPharazonV: I tried typing in the password like 5 times, until I thought...
ArPharazonV: hey, perhaps 3 months have passed
ArPharazonV: so I made a new account under the same name
ArPharazonV: and lo, it worked
ArPharazonV: I thought... Ar-Pharazon-V
ArPharazonV: like the TFT name
ArPharazonV: and FM and I tried diablo 1... neither of us could connect to bnet
FarmerMaggotV: yes, can anyone else confirm that Diablo 1 has effectively been taken off battle.net?
FladrifV has left the room.
ArPharazonV: lemme see... perhaps I can find something at official sites
GilraenV has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: Aiya
GilraenV: Aiya
FladrifV has entered the room.
Celebrimbor V: aiya
ArPharazonV: Aiyata
ArPharazonV: how could they take it off bnet.... next will probably be warcraft 2
FarmerMaggotV: heh, can anyone confirm that though?
VardaValar1: Aiya
VardaValar1: It was a story about Gondolin, not article, pardon
ArPharazonV: I had to reinstall war3 again today
ArPharazonV: lately it has been shutting down, giving an error
ArPharazonV: and today, I got the error twice while starting up the game
ArPharazonV: so, I deinstalled it, reinstalled it, and the problem was gone
ThorondorV has entered the room.
ThorondorV: Hello
ArPharazonV: luckily...Aiya... all the maps were still there
Eonwe Valar: heya
ArPharazonV: I can find nothing on the subject of Diablo, sorry
FarmerMaggotV: I really should clean up this room.....
sauronjag: Sorry, I can't stay! I have to get ready for a meeting
FarmerMaggotV: tons and tons of CDs on the floor...... and books....
sauronjag: Namarie, hope the meeting goes well
ThorondorV: Namarie..
FladrifV: namarie gtgup early
ArPharazonV: Namarie
sauronjag has left the room.
FladrifV has left the room.
ArPharazonV: and there Flad goes again...
ArPharazonV: I doubt we should be counting on a transcript from him
ThorondorV: I have to go soon too
VardaValar1: back
FarmerMaggotV: I can get a transcript, however I've got to reboot in about 5 min :P
ArPharazonV: ic
ThorondorV: wb wb
ArPharazonV: well, I'll do my best
VardaValar1: Thorondor, did you have anything you would like to have us bring up at the meeting?
VardaValar1: Poor Ent
ArPharazonV: although I wasn't the first, of course, and may have missed an interesting part
ArPharazonV: perhaps Turgon should do it :-D
VardaValar1: Eonwe, I've put you on my Always Accept Email from list
Eonwe Valar: Meeting part and After-meeting are the parts that matter
GilraenV: brb...
VardaValar1: Please try sending the old transcript again
ThorondorV: Hmm, not really, except I had a nice weekend in Middle-Finland.. :-)
Eonwe Valar: ok, but will have to do later,.. On a new comp :}
VardaValar1: Sounds great :-)
VardaValar1: The News page will still be there : )
VardaValar1: Don't see you on my Block list, Eonwe. Very weird
ArPharazonV: oh, Varda, another question
VardaValar1: ?
ArPharazonV: did you check Letters of Tolkien for me?
ArPharazonV: with the name of part 2 of Lotr?
VardaValar1: Nope, but I'm home now and will run get it. Please remind me the question?
TurgonjustTurgon: I will save this meeting up til the point where I have to log off, gotta get up early tomorrow for a change :-)
VardaValar1: Thanks Turgon
ArPharazonV: I was wondering about the name Tolkien originally suggested for the second part of the Fellowship of the Ring, meaning part 2 of the 6
ArPharazonV: should be stated in letter 139
VardaValar1: That letter refers to naming the three main books
VardaValar1: he does say:
ArPharazonV: 'Return of the Shadow' should be stated literally there as the name of part 1...
GilraenV: back
ArPharazonV: Aiyata
VardaValar1: "the division into two books per volume is purely a matter of convenience with regard to length, and has no relaton to
VardaValar1: the rhythm or ordering of the narratives."
VardaValar1: Welcome back, Gilraen :-)
VardaValar1: Let's start the actual meeting : )
GilraenV: thank you both
ArPharazonV: no literal titles?
ArPharazonV: darn?
ArPharazonV: *darn!
VardaValar1: Not there
ArPharazonV: perhaps it was just an extract
VardaValar1: It has diff titles for the three main parts
VardaValar1: Instead of Fellowship:
VardaValar1: "The Return of the Shadow"
TurgonjustTurgon: here in full now, Armageddon done :-)
VardaValar1: Instead of Two Towers:
VardaValar1: The Shadow Lengthens
VardaValar1: "Return of the King" is the same
ArPharazonV: hmm.... how odd... I seem to have read this wrong... let me check a bit more background information about the other part-names
VardaValar1: He is not "wedded to any of the suggested sub-titles"
VardaValar1: okie dokie
ArPharazonV: brb

VardaValar1: Heya Thror
ArPharazonV: I'll wait
TurgonjustTurgon: what I meant :-)
VardaValar1: Be of good cheer, it seems to be the right one
VardaValar1: We are having a shift in the way people work with the guild
VardaValar1: We have quite a few people who aren't "full members"
VardaValar1: People who play with us and are polite but don't do Tolkien
VardaValar1: People who drop in for a bit of Tolkien and move on
ArPharazonV: ic... could they be scared of the test?
VardaValar1: Sometimes they seem more numerous than full members
Chugin Chub: need someone to take attendance?
VardaValar1: Would you do that, Thror?
Chugin Chub: would be my pleasure :-)
FarmerMaggotV: rebooting now, make sure you count me as here Thror :-)
VardaValar1: Add in Celebrimbor and Thorondor who were here earlier
Celebrimbor V: I still am here
VardaValar1: Thanks

TurgonjustTurgon: and Raukoluin has been here as well
VardaValar1: both are Lungorthin
Eonwe Valar: They've already taken the test, they just don't participate in all the full member activities,.. no test to be afraid of after that unless you get drafted for Maia :}

VardaValar1: For those who are recruiting,
FarmerMaggotV has entered the room.
VardaValar1: I suggest using the Activity page for the most updated naming list

VardaValar1: Elatan wrote:
Chugin Chub: ah fammer has well :-)
VardaValar1: "The Green Lady in the White Dress"
VardaValar1: Nice imagery, Yavanna's forest in the snow
VardaValar1: He made a good point in the forum, about Yavanna and why don't the Elves speak more of her
VardaValar1: I think we only scratched the surface of what the Elves do in the books
VardaValar1: This is another reason we should write lots of hole-filling stories and poems : )
VardaValar1: Elves and all the others
VardaValar1: The Encyc needs a lot of articles also
VardaValar1: If you each could do one on your character, it would help much
VardaValar1: Perhaps on the name, or the weapons used, or his/her main contribution
VardaValar1: Something about the character grabbed you
VardaValar1: Any other Web news?
VardaValar1: Eonwe?
VardaValar1: Eonwe is trying to update the Games page with everyone's current gaming, a valuable service and quite difficult
VardaValar1: Everyone please help him out with your info, and maybe someone else's who did not send theirs in
Celebrimbor V: I have some game news
Eonwe Valar: I've had some scheduling issues doing so, and I'm moving into a new comp, so will try to have those e-mails out tonight
ArPharazonV: oh, cool, expect an answer tomorrow

VardaValar1: Turgon, go ahead
TurgonjustTurgon: I've got a secondary email up and running, in case my hotmail account runs into one of many "hotmail bugs"
VardaValar1: What is it?
TurgonjustTurgon: e.pas@home.nl
VardaValar1: Thanks
Elwing V has entered the room.
ArPharazonV: Aiya
VardaValar1: Aiya!
TurgonjustTurgon: I could say more about it, but since everyone knows about hotmail, I don't think there is any use to it :-)
VardaValar1: Any other Web news? I know you guys have pages
FarmerMaggotV: I've been getting my comp setup as a server, but it's not quite news heh
VardaValar1: If your personal pages aren't linked to our index, be sure to send me your URL : )

ArPharazonV: brb, food
FarmerMaggotV: afk -- dinner, will scroll when I get back :-)
Celebrimbor V: it's called Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Celebrimbor V: upon playing multiplayer online quite a bit, I've noticed clans and guilds all over the place
TurgonjustTurgon: is it a follow up on Jedi Knight?
Celebrimbor V: I think it would be so cool if some of us here has a clan there
Celebrimbor V: Jedi Outcast?
Celebrimbor V: yeah
TurgonjustTurgon: I mean the first RP SW game
TurgonjustTurgon: single-player at the time, but pretty awesome
FINARFIN010: afk for a few...
ThorondorV: Time for me to fly away, good night all..
Celebrimbor V: oh, I think so, same kind of game, but awesome MP lvls. and stuff, and we can post online on the load screen when we meet, and stuff like that
VardaValar1: Namarie, Thorondor!
ThorondorV has left the room.
TurgonjustTurgon: retail I take it?
Celebrimbor V: sigh, lol yes
TurgonjustTurgon: and know whether it has flown over to Europe yet?
ArPharazonV: back
Celebrimbor V: not sure, check the web, I could always try to burn and mail hehe
Celebrimbor V: but anyway, if anything try the demo lol
ArPharazonV: Turg, what is 'oliebol' in English?
Celebrimbor V: it's an awesome game, very easy to customize
TurgonjustTurgon: Iactually have no idea Phar, I don't think the english have such things

Celebrimbor V: that was my news
VardaValar1: Doughnut hole?
VardaValar1: Thanks you, Celebrimbor : )
ArPharazonV: no, no hole
ArPharazonV: just a ball
TurgonjustTurgon: not quite sure it's the same, but it would possibly ring a few bells when said they are traditionally eaten around new years eave
VardaValar1: That is what we call a doughnut hole : ) The ball of dough from the middle of the doughnut
TurgonjustTurgon: Cel, Knights of the Old Republic was the title I was looking for
ArPharazonV: oh, ok
ArPharazonV: a doughnut hole...
Celebrimbor V: ah
TurgonjustTurgon: actually Varda, our "doughnut holes" are generally about as large as the doughnut :-)
VardaValar1: Consider it a large doughnut : )
TurgonjustTurgon: without the hole :-)
TurgonjustTurgon: and stuffed with raisins
ArPharazonV: no raisins
Eonwe Valar: sounds like a jelly doughnut without the jelly :}
VardaValar1: Pardon, need a second chat room for the side chats : )
Celebrimbor V: lol
TurgonjustTurgon: hehe lol
TurgonjustTurgon: sorry, got caught up in it
TurgonjustTurgon: we usually do though lol
TurgonjustTurgon: anyways, we got sidetracked at the gamenews

TurgonjustTurgon: he says sorry he can't come in for meeting, has to leave shortly
TurgonjustTurgon: but he informs me he is playing WoW beta
TurgonjustTurgon: I asked him to send in some news about it, since he's the second we have in there :-)
VardaValar1: Aiya to Gorbag! Great to hear he got the beta!
VardaValar1: Only what is allowed.
VardaValar1: Sometimes Blizzard puts a gag order. But we can say on the News that he is in it : )
FINARFIN010: cool to be Gorbag.
TurgonjustTurgon: he tells me he will try to send some news in
TurgonjustTurgon: asking to keep it in text and no classified beta info :-)

FINARFIN010: afk...for a few
TurgonjustTurgon: he's off, so that's it from Gorbag for today
VardaValar1: Thanks
VardaValar1: Is anyone currently working on any Tolkien projects besides me?
top

VardaValar1: Tolkien:
ArPharazonV: trying to get some work done on my Arda-fanfiction...
VardaValar1: yay!
ArPharazonV: but I can't seem to make up original names, so it's in a bit of stagnation
ArPharazonV: I've got the story in my head, but...
VardaValar1: Think of what the character is like, look up Tolkien language words that come close
VardaValar1: Then it will come to you
ArPharazonV: thanks, I'll use that advice
ArPharazonV: for both my tales
FINARFIN010: back
ArPharazonV: Aiyata
VardaValar1: Letters 136:
VardaValar1: (I remembered)
ArPharazonV: :-)
FarmerMaggotV: back
ArPharazonV: Aiyata
VardaValar1: JRRT was just tossing some requested ideas out, not thrilled with doing it
Elwing V: Get story down! Use temp names then change later...ah "search & replace" - almost as good as "undo" function
ArPharazonV: sounds good, Elwing, was thinking of that
VardaValar1: He said they were not paired, and three and four were not really related
VardaValar1: Elwing is also a writer with experience : )
VardaValar1: Here's what he offered:
Elwing V: and practicing all the time...:-)
VardaValar1: Vol 1: "The Ring Sets Out" and "The Ring Goes South"
FINARFIN010: in the p.s.
VardaValar1: Vol. 2: "The Treason of Isengard" and 'The Ring goes East"
VardaValar1: aye
ArPharazonV: right, those 2 I had
Elwing V: That ring sure gets around (hmm that's almost a pun)
VardaValar1: Vol 3: "The War of the Ring" and "The End of the Third Age"
VardaValar1: hehe Elwing
FINARFIN010: going out to grill some ribs...will scroll when i get back
ArPharazonV: and those 2 I had as well
ArPharazonV: wow
ArPharazonV: thank you very much
VardaValar1: Scroll and grill, scroll and grill. What a lovely life ; )
ArPharazonV: a bit less spectacular than I'd hoped... but still, I thought I'd never hear the answers
VardaValar1: Patience brings one nearly everything, with added persistence
ArPharazonV: so Return of the Shadow was just an alternative for the Fellowship of the Ring...
VardaValar1: Did anyone else have a Tolkien subject?
VardaValar1: I was bothered that Boromir and Legolas both seemed to travel to Imladris alone, especially Boromir
VardaValar1: Both were princes. Why no escort mentioned?
VardaValar1: Did they not have the men to spare, due to the fighting?
ArPharazonV: did they not have escorts? they were there in the movie, I thought perhaps I'd missed something in the book...
VardaValar1: Boromir certainly went alone
VardaValar1: When Legolas is seen, he is noticeably different from all the other elves even to the hobbit
VardaValar1: No others like him, so no escort noticed
TurgonjustTurgon: Legolas did not need an escort, probably due to the strip of land between the Anduin and the Misty Mountains being kept free of evil by the Beornings
Eonwe Valar: He took the Gap of Rohan, and Saruman wasn't about to play his hand over one lone Dunadan
TurgonjustTurgon: Boromir is no Dunadan
ArPharazonV: Boromir is a man of Gondor
FINARFIN010: no he is not
FINARFIN010: but he has the blood of one
VardaValar1: Of the Numenoreans though
ArPharazonV: but still, one man doesn't really draw attention
Eonwe Valar: The men of Gondor were descendants of Dunedain
VardaValar1: Looks like bandit bait when they travel alone
Eonwe Valar: Dunedain founded both Arnor and Gondor
ArPharazonV: so... Elendil and his sons were Dunedain?
Eonwe Valar: and the Line of the Stewards was likely one of the most pure Numenorean lines in Gondor
TurgonjustTurgon: esides, at the time Boromir passed through the Gap of Rohan, Saruman was still in the process of creating his army as can be derived from Gandalf's account in the council
TurgonjustTurgon: besides*
ArPharazonV: I thought the Numenoreans were the founders of Arnor and Gondor, and Dunedain was a name given to the line of Isildur?
Elwing V: Maybe escourt turned back just at edge of Rivendell so most at council wouldn't notice anyway
Eonwe Valar: Elendil and his sons were dunedain, yes. Remember Dunadan simply means "Man of the West" referring to the Numenoreans. Hence any descendant of the Numenoreans would be a Dunadan
VardaValar1: Dunedain "Edain of the West"
ArPharazonV: oh, ok, thank you
FINARFIN010: one lone man on horse back in the wild would not rais much concern in the mighty minds of Sauron.. or Sauraman.. for they each think that all men would think as they think being high and mighty.
FINARFIN010: and thus did Frodo and sam succeed.
VardaValar1: Interchangeable pretty much
FarmerMaggotV: Finarfin, could you please not use italics for your font? I find it hard to read :-(...
FINARFIN010: must check ribs
FINARFIN010: oik
ArPharazonV: I'm just glad he didn't have to face a pack of Wargs... would have been sorry if Boromir died before even reaching Rivendell
VardaValar1: Orc patrol, lots of fun guys out there. Your wargs, aye
FINARFIN010: ok
VardaValar1: Lots of spiders just passing through Mirkwood, but if he stays on the path, probably ok
FINARFIN010: but on the other hand.
ArPharazonV: didn't Boromir come from the west?
ArPharazonV: I remember him crossing Tharbad
FINARFIN010: Saruon and Sauraman were both gathering orcs and baddies to them so the place was prob. not that bad at that time
FINARFIN010: you know the mustering of their armies
FINARFIN010: doing that counting thing
FINARFIN010: i guess
TurgonjustTurgon: just a question, who was the Elf in charge of the Elves on the west of the Anfauglith at the Nirnaeth?
ArPharazonV: hmm... Fingon?
ArPharazonV: Turgon?
TurgonjustTurgon: I thought so, but not sure
TurgonjustTurgon: not Turgon, he came in late
ArPharazonV: Fingon, in that case
ArPharazonV: I think
TurgonjustTurgon: Turgon commanded his army alone
VardaValar1: Seems like it was Fingon. Why not just look it up?
TurgonjustTurgon: Fingon, aye
ArPharazonV: Oh, btw, I'll mention this totally unrelated topic here, because many people will be gone in the aftermeeting....
VardaValar1: Gilraen lived in Rivendell with Aragorn until he barely grown...
VardaValar1: Go ahead
ArPharazonV: does anybody know a place on the web where you can download the Megaman-series?
ArPharazonV: I doubt I can still buy them...
ArPharazonV: and I have a new interest in them
FarmerMaggotV: For... NES?
ArPharazonV: pc, if possible
FarmerMaggotV: ah, no clue then
ArPharazonV: perhaps I could find an emulator...
FarmerMaggotV: yeah, ROMs are fairly easy to find
FarmerMaggotV: and there are a few legal sites
ArPharazonV: such as...
FarmerMaggotV: can't remember now, friend told me about 4 months ago :P
ArPharazonV: oh, ok, thanks anyway, perhaps you'll remember them later :-)
VardaValar1: Try Googling?
FarmerMaggotV: AIM screenname wolff206 was the one that told me
VardaValar1: Hit the internet with your favorite search engine
VardaValar1: We have some people who have commented by email on writing stories
VardaValar1: They prefer to work on them in a forum where they can get feedback
VardaValar1: but they are willing to post finished work on our site
VardaValar1: Wondered if we should rig something like that. Doubted we had enough guild interest and it would be taken over by outsiders
VardaValar1: Any comments?
VardaValar1: I prefer to look over finished works and help with those, for my own opinion
Elwing V: Think minimum feedback would be good to help but too much would change from authors story to everybodys story...what point there?
VardaValar1: They don't seem to change much on the other forums. I think they just want someone to pat them on the back to help them keep working
Eonwe Valar: I prefer to write somethign and let people take it or leave it as they will.
VardaValar1: Aye, Elwing
Elwing V: I enjoy writing for me and friends I know will enjoy...if others do also, great!
Eonwe Valar: Not that I don't accept criticism, but I don't change my stories on a whim.
VardaValar1: I could ask folk on the other forums if they want to post finished stories with us
VardaValar1: You two do fine on your own : )
VardaValar1: We seem to have a problem with guild guys joining us as a Tolkien club, then going to play games and never doing a bit of Tolkien again
FINARFIN010: back again
Elwing V: Thank you! Reading other things helps too..I find certain styles I really like and try to pattern some after that
VardaValar1: Welcome back
FINARFIN010: mmmmm....ribs...mmmm
VardaValar1: Sounds good : )
VardaValar1: both
Elwing V: If you don't have enough to share....!!
VardaValar1: Would you guys rather I not request stories from outside?
FarmerMaggotV has left the room.
Elwing V: Cruelly making me drool on keyboard
Aerandir V has entered the room.
VardaValar1: It was just a thought
VardaValar1: Aiya : )
Aerandir V: aiya
FarmerMaggotV has entered the room.
VardaValar1: Unstable, Farmer?
Eonwe Valar: Well, I prefer our Stories page to be from Guild members of some form
Aerandir V: soryt ry about missing the meetings, school is back so other things can only be done on weekends
Aerandir V: *sorry
FarmerMaggotV: aye, gaim died -- however, the log is still intact (albiet missing about 40 seconds)
VardaValar1: We understand how that goes
ArPharazonV: Aiya
FINARFIN010: *extends an open inventation to all guild members to come and eat like little hobbits (who have missed breakfast and lunch!) at Finarphin's fine table of B.B.Q. delights. (non formal atire required) \
VardaValar1: *tosses informal robe over meeting outfit*
Eonwe Valar: No shirt, no shoes = Immediate service? :}
FINARFIN010: you bert
FINARFIN010: bet
FarmerMaggotV: I wish I could take you up on that offer :P
FINARFIN010: best Ail in From the Shire
Elwing V: dreamily gets bbq sauce all over face :-)
FarmerMaggotV: all we have here is... bagels.....
VardaValar1: *passes cream cheese to Farmer*
ArPharazonV: me want more dougnut...holes...
FINARFIN010: Ale
VardaValar1: I guess we are all in agreement with Eonwe? Keep the stories to guild-related folk, no invitations?
VardaValar1: No opinions? :-)
VardaValar1: ok
VardaValar1: Any other Toklien topics?
Elwing V: Maybe if recommended by guildrelated (good knowledge of substance, styles, etc)
TurgonjustTurgon: will try and scroll back later
TurgonjustTurgon: working on a poem on the Nirnaeth :-)
Elwing V: Suitable for guild "publish"
ArPharazonV: ack, nothing about mega man... I'll just hope FM can remember the sites one day
FarmerMaggotV: hehe
VardaValar1: I have folk who ask me if I'd be interested in their stories. Should I require them to be Tolkien-onlies to take them?
FarmerMaggotV: I'll ask my friend as soon as I remember and he's on :P
ArPharazonV: ok :-)
Eonwe Valar: look at Electronics Boutique and Gamestop,.. MIght get lucky and stumble across some as they do carry old SNES games (don't knwo about NES though)
VardaValar1: I guess I'll take them if offered, but not go looking
VardaValar1: I declare "After-Meeting"
FINARFIN010: i wish tolkien would have writen more about Galadriel and her part in the history of the rings.
Eonwe Valar: I suppose that will work, Varda
VardaValar1: Finarfin will have to write it : )
FarmerMaggotV: Yay for after meeting :-)
Aerandir V: If you could see one of Tolkiens other middle-earth stories(silm) as a movie that follows the story as close as possible what would it be if any?
Eonwe Valar: look in Unfinished Tales Finarfin :}
VardaValar1: Read UT, Fin? Has more there
FINARFIN010: i just reread un tales
FINARFIN010: and it is wanting
FINARFIN010: :-(
VardaValar1: Comes from being unfinished
FINARFIN010: well there is that.
ArPharazonV: Beren and Luthien, I thkn, Aerandir
VardaValar1: One reason we exist is to fill in stuff
Aerandir V: they arent quite finished are they
ArPharazonV: *think
Eonwe Valar: could try the Histories? :}
FINARFIN010: not much terer
FINARFIN010: there
FINARFIN010: bbq. sauce on fingers and now on keyboard *sich*
FarmerMaggotV: heh
VardaValar1: Good thing keyboards are inexpensive
Eonwe Valar: If I were directing, I would turn The Sil into about 5 movies, I think,.. otherwise not sure if I'd want anyone to try it with less than 4 movies
FarmerMaggotV: not all keyboards are inexpensive heh
VardaValar1: too true, Farmer
Aerandir V: by story I mean section of silm focusing on one set of characters such as earendil or fall of gondolin, or something like that. I think they were originally independent but evolved into the common mythology
FarmerMaggotV: I sooooo want a wireless one.... I could go for wireless anything..... these cords in here are annoying me
ArPharazonV: as I said, Beren and Luthien...
ArPharazonV: it's the first part of the Silm I've ever read
FarmerMaggotV: and I still have to get another external HDD hooked up heh
ArPharazonV: in the earliest version, that is
VardaValar1: The stories are scattered across so many books, that they are difficult to read or research
VardaValar1: A loose reference back here, a different account there
VardaValar1: So we need an Ency written by us to bring it together
ArPharazonV: before buying the Silmarillion, I read Lost Tales part 2... the only part available at that time
FINARFIN010: nim nim spit on nim
FINARFIN010: oops
VardaValar1: Stories to fill in holes
Eonwe Valar: I'd want to see the entire Sil,..
VardaValar1: Clone JRRT?
ArPharazonV: and so, the first story I ever read beside lotr and hobbit was Beren and Luthien
FarmerMaggotV: Varda -- forgot to bring this up during meeting. I wonder if there'd be interest in getting a bunch of guild geeks together and do some programming?
VardaValar1: Not a bad thing, Phar
FINARFIN010: i love the sil
Aerandir V: does anyone know if the silm is the cleanest version of the tales chris Tolkien could get, or is it the final result Tolkien had planned for?
VardaValar1: Program what?
FINARFIN010: it is rich in history and detail.
Eonwe Valar: We have geeks in the Valar Guild?
FarmerMaggotV: dunno hehe, just whatever we'd want to
ArPharazonV: cleanrest version, Aerandir
VardaValar1: Tolkien planned for Sil
ArPharazonV: *cleanest
ArPharazonV: if you see part 10 and 11
FarmerMaggotV: yeah, so far I've talked to Fladrif, Gwaihir, Lady Fallun, Arathorn
ArPharazonV: you know he was busy with a huge transformation
VardaValar1: That's what we have that spot in the forum for, along with AIM. Gather and program away : )]
ArPharazonV: making the moon a piece of arda Melkor built, etc
FINARFIN010: i have the sil on cd rom.
Aerandir V: I think beren and Luthien is the best self contained story
ArPharazonV: published Silm was the cleanest Chris could get, not the most recent
VardaValar1: Nice. Listen while driving : )
FINARFIN010: yup
Aerandir V: with many of the others a lot of back story would have to be shown somehow
VardaValar1: JRRT kept changing his mind, or didn't have access to his own messy notes. Know how that is :-)
FINARFIN010: Luthien was molded ofter Tolkien wife
ArPharazonV: a prologue is always nice... worked for lotr
FINARFIN010: he wrote the love story for her
ArPharazonV: yup, he himself identified himself with Beren, I think
FINARFIN010: chamlost eh?
VardaValar1: JRRT put Beren on his tombstone, Luthien on his wife's
Aerandir V: its written on their tombstones
VardaValar1: Camlost
ArPharazonV: I wonder how his wife would have felt about that, if she didn't like his stories :-D
VardaValar1: Gottal love the romance in that
FINARFIN010: what is you favorate part of the Beron and Luthien story?>
Aerandir V: i have a picture of his grave in some book
Aerandir V: last page
VardaValar1: If she didn't like his stories, one of them would have been dumped on the street
ArPharazonV: favorite part... hmm...
Eonwe Valar: Claiming his wife has half divine? What woman wouldn't like that? :}
VardaValar1: :-)
FINARFIN010: :-)
ArPharazonV: all parts were good...
FINARFIN010: but...
ArPharazonV: the happenings at Sauron's tower I liked well
VardaValar1: So many good parts. Luthien's escape from the tree, the song battles of Finrod and of Luthien
FINARFIN010: i was hopping you would say that. for it is my favorate part as well.
FINARFIN010: yes the battle in the pit
Aerandir V: imagine the battle between sauron and huan. sauron shapeshifting and fighting and ferocity at the speed dogs wrestle. and they are both supernatural
FINARFIN010: or dungon
ArPharazonV: from the captures of the... well, fellowship... to the destruction by Luthien
FINARFIN010: how does it go varda?
VardaValar1: Unsure of your question
FINARFIN010: Luthien just mopped up the place with Sauron.
ArPharazonV: yup
FINARFIN010: took him down a peg or to i'll warrent
ArPharazonV: some sort of spell, I think
TurgonjustTurgon: ok, finished my poem :-)
ArPharazonV: to unbind the stones
VardaValar1: Then Beren wanted just one more silmaril...
ArPharazonV: one more?
FINARFIN010: lets hear it
VardaValar1: Now go back over it, Turgon : )
FINARFIN010: a true teacher that one varda is.
TurgonjustTurgon: one thing I never do is try to tamper with it after I am done :-)
Aerandir V: what mortal me desie most of all...power
VardaValar1: Beren was fated to take one silmaril, but reached for more and blew it
TurgonjustTurgon: I make my changes as I go, not after :-)
ArPharazonV: lol, Aerandir, I agree with that
ArPharazonV: which could connect me to Pharazon....
VardaValar1: So you would have chosen Hera instead of Aphrodite? : )
FINARFIN010: angrist smaps and strikes the sleeping morgoth in the cheek...
ArPharazonV: neh, Hera was a... ah, I can't say nasty words here
ArPharazonV: Hera wasn't a nice woman
TurgonjustTurgon: Aphrodite at any time and all the way!
ArPharazonV: I would have chosen Nemesis, I think :-)
VardaValar1: Paris had to make the choice according to the ability as all were gorgeous
ArPharazonV: I'm a bit evil at heart...
VardaValar1: lol
FINARFIN010: do tell
VardaValar1: but only the three were to be chosen from: Power, Wisdom, Love
ArPharazonV: oh, you mean like that
TurgonjustTurgon: Aphrodite wasn't the biggest sweetheart as well
Elwing V: Not the goddess of true love I think
ArPharazonV: hmm... touch choice... I guess I would just have been honest, and go with whatever reward I was given
VardaValar1: The choice had to be which was most desirable
VardaValar1: She was the goddess of all types of love
TurgonjustTurgon: for what I can remember, she actually was quite the **** before she became the Goddess of Love
Eonwe Valar: I don't recall any tales of Aphrodite before she was the Goddess of Love
VardaValar1: When was she not the goddess of love?
FINARFIN010: yeah... and pholophers have been struglling with the deffination of "Love" for ages.
FINARFIN010: still can not spell
ArPharazonV: I mean, even were all 3 goddesses really gorgeous, I could have made an honest choice...
Eonwe Valar: Ther eare different types of love
TurgonjustTurgon: yes, but I somewhere remember that either before or after, she stole a lover from one of the demi-gods / mortals
VardaValar1: We were talking about that two meetings ago. Agape love vs the more physical types
Eonwe Valar: English just dumped them all together into one word
VardaValar1: We use adjectives to parse them out
ArPharazonV: not just English, I guess
VardaValar1: context
Aerandir V: they have categorized love into different types
ArPharazonV: is there a difference in words for Dutch, Turg?
FarmerMaggotV: can everyone go to http://sirg3.homeip.net/ and refresh say, three times? want to know how the speed is under a bit of pressure
Eonwe Valar: Interesting contrast to Brown's (?) theory
Elwing V: lots of those goddesses (and gods) were not exactly good role models:/
ArPharazonV: I refreshed 3 times
ArPharazonV: very smoothly
TurgonjustTurgon: comp not even loaded the page yet lol
Eonwe Valar: That's because they were modelled after humans, who usualyl aren't good role models either :}
Aerandir V: they were often selfish
VardaValar1: Did but page says: This page is here because the site administrator has changed the configuration of this web server. Please contact the person responsible for maintaining this server with questions.
ArPharazonV: right, and that page refreshed very smoothly ;-)
VardaValar1: aye
GilraenV: lol, I believe that's what it's supposed to say
FarmerMaggotV: yes
FarmerMaggotV: that's good
GilraenV: or at least... Maggot isn't bothered by it
FarmerMaggotV: I haven't put my website on there yet heh
ArPharazonV: lol
FarmerMaggotV: been doing server setup
VardaValar1: The gods kept having to take new lovers as their followers conquered new places.
FarmerMaggotV: I can give webspace btw
FINARFIN010: aye refreshed about 25 times hehe
VardaValar1: that let them take over the local gods
FarmerMaggotV: 50MB
VardaValar1: We may need to ask you for that, Farmer
Aerandir V: the gods wouuld impersonate a spouse
FarmerMaggotV: SSH, FTP, HTTP (MySQL, PHP, Server Side Includes, Perl)
TurgonjustTurgon: well, flat text with only one flash image on it isn't going to be stressful at any time, unless it's Geocities hosted lol
ArPharazonV: one flash image?
FarmerMaggotV: heh
VardaValar1: We're came close to the 25MB limit on Alatar's server before we cut out stuff
FarmerMaggotV: ah, I can up it too
FarmerMaggotV: 40GB HDD :-)
TurgonjustTurgon: only? 8-)
FarmerMaggotV: but tell me if you're interested :-)
Eonwe Valar: Btw, the theory I mentioned is in short as follows: There was Logos "The Word" that defined all of existence, then man began to distinguish between things in existence, people, places, things, animals, actions, etc
VardaValar1: I'm interested
VardaValar1: I need room to handle the graphics for the Art page
TurgonjustTurgon: anyways, time for me to sign off
ArPharazonV: ouch
FarmerMaggotV: ok, I've got a few chores to do, but contact me on my other aim SN: msuics4me2
FINARFIN010: do not forget about time.
VardaValar1: You sending in your poem?
TurgonjustTurgon: together with the piece of the chat log
VardaValar1: Thanks : )
TurgonjustTurgon: and I won't forget to attach this time
FINARFIN010: well it has realy been fun.. but i need to lvl up my mule.
VardaValar1: hehe
Eonwe Valar: hf Finarfin
TurgonjustTurgon: last time proved disastrous lol
FINARFIN010: thanks
ArPharazonV: namarie
VardaValar1: Poor mainboard
ArPharazonV: to both
VardaValar1: Namarie
FINARFIN010: Namarie
FINARFIN010 has left the room.
TurgonjustTurgon: oh question
VardaValar1: ?
TurgonjustTurgon: Varda, would you prefer the file name to have the date in American notation or european?
TurgonjustTurgon: that being 13-9 or 9-13
VardaValar1: I'll change it in the finished file anyway. np
ArPharazonV: hmm... I need to go soon, I suppose, early/earlier day tomorrow....
TurgonjustTurgon: k
VardaValar1: rp posts!
VardaValar1: :-)
ArPharazonV: tomorrow
ArPharazonV: no time now
ArPharazonV: tomorrow
VardaValar1: okie dokie : )
ArPharazonV: patience is a virtue, grasshopper
VardaValar1: hehe
VardaValar1: Reminders don't hurt, unless they become nags : )
ArPharazonV: reminders become nags when they are not needed
VardaValar1: Namarie
ArPharazonV: right, ok... I guess I won't need to send in a transcript now, Turgon's got it
ArPharazonV: or.. just to be safe? ;-)
Eonwe Valar: Phar, if last week taught us anything, it's that everyoen attending a meeting should send in a transcript :}
VardaValar1: hehe
ArPharazonV: yeah, I guess you're right...
VardaValar1: I have one too, I hope
ArPharazonV: well, Namarie in that case, I'm out... just gotta print out my schedule
Eonwe Valar: Somebody's has to get through this dangerous web caught the,.. web :}
ArPharazonV: for tomorrow
Eonwe Valar: caught=called :}
GilraenV: namarie
VardaValar1: You won't hurt my email by sending them in
VardaValar1: I still never saw two Eonwe sent
TurgonjustTurgon: off I go, Namarie everyone
TurgonjustTurgon: and patience is a virtue O:-)
Eonwe Valar: I'll try sending you a copy of this week's transcript to see if you get it from me.
TurgonjustTurgon has left the room.
VardaValar1: Ok, I'll watch for it
ArPharazonV: well, I printed out my schedule, and shutting down programs
VardaValar1: I see one for attendance from Thror!
ArPharazonV: there goes msn...
ArPharazonV: and now I'm saving
ArPharazonV: Namarie!!!!
