The Battle of Five Armies, from Fili's Point of View
The
battle had already begun when we had joined the fray. In our wrath our enemies
fell back and we, unwittingly, followed them, cleaving away. Our rage, which
first kept us from harm, soon led us into great peril. In our pride we failed
to realize that the enemy was surrounding us. It was the job of me and my twin to act
as personal bodyguard to our mother’s brother, Thorin. At first we had been
eager at this assignment, being near the famed Thorin Oakenshield, hero of
the Battle of Azanulbizar, watching the orcs flee in terror from our great
leader. It was not until we were in the heat of battle following our hero
that we realized how dangerous it was to guard him.
He
rushed forward into the orc masses, in his anger, with no regard for his,
or our, safety. Kili and I were both wounded in the pursuit to keep Thorin
from harm, yet we continued to fight. It was then that they came upon us…the
guard of Bolg, huge, ugly, vile looking Warg riders. We were drawn away from
Thorin as they bore down on us with their rusty blades, and the wargs’ jaws,
coming out of every direction. I was almost overcome until I saw something
out of the corner of my eye that made my wrath rekindle: Thorin had fallen…”Kili,
Thorin needs help!!!” I called as I stepped to the left to miss the jaws
of the warg I was fighting. Instantly I brought my axe down on its neck,
beheading the foul beast, and leaving the rider vulnerable, crushed under
the body. I disposed of him in my rage and flung myself into the orcs starting
to drag Thorin to Bolg. Kili followed.
I
do not remember exactly what happened, my only thoughts were on destroying
each and every one of the foul beasts that would dare to strike our leader.
I felt no pain…until a spear ran me through. I fell, looking down in disbelief,
I could not believe my eyes, I had not only been hit by the spear but I had
at least three arrows sticking in me, my armor had been cleaved through and
I had deep gashes on my arms, legs, and abdomen. How I had not felt any of
these wounds at first was a mystery to me, but for now all I could think
of was the pain and how my eyes kept going in and out of focus. I could see
orcs closing in on me but I couldn’t move to find my axe. It seemed as though
my ears had also been cloven off, a minute ago there had been the deafening
sounds of battle…now there was nothing. The orcs seemed to be moving slower
then normal. Creeping toward me in slow motion, while others again tried
to drag Thorin to their leader. They were getting ever closer.
Yet now it
seemed as though they were retreating but I could not think of why. They had
only been a couple feet away from another kill, yet they seemed to be moving
away. A roar suddenly broke the sound of silence. The orcs were flying! No,
a giant bear was throwing them! Beorn had arrived and the orcs were fleeing
in utter terror. What luck not only were the orcs parting but he was heading
towards myself, Kili, and Thorin. He had reached Thorin and picked him up
but wait…where was he goin?, He was turning and leaving! Thoughts ran through
my head, “Me and Kili are being left behind. We deserve to be taken away
from the battle also. We haven’t perished either and we threw ourselves into
mortal peril, because of Thorin’s rashness. We deserve just as much as he
to be rescued like heroes…” However with Beorn gone the orcs had returned
for easy kills. I guess in some way it was lucky I blacked out before they
reached me, but I didn’t care about the orcs anymore, or the pain, or anything
except, “What about us…why are we not being rescued…like heroes…”
