In Tirion, after the rape of the Silmarils, he took the Oath of
and of all the brothers he regretted this the most.
During the first age Maglor guarded against the forces of Morgoth at Maglor’s Gap, the largest break in the mountain-fences of Beleriand, between Himring and the Blue Mountains and was the first line of defense in east Beleriand.
At the time of the War of Wrath only Maglor and Maedhros remained of the sons of Fëanor. They sent a message to Eönwë, the herald of the Elder King, bidding him to give them the Silmarils that the host of the Valar had recovered from Morgoth’s Crown. Eönwë refused and decided that the light of the jewels belonged in Valinor as did Maglor and Maedhros so the Valar could pass judgement on their lives.
Maglor, who was weary of the oath said to Maedhros: “The oath says not that we may not bide our time, and it may be that in Valinor all shall be forgiven and forgot, and we shall come into our own in peace.” Maedhros would not submit and to him Maglor yielded. They disguised themselves and crept into the camp of Eönwë at night and slew the guards who guarded the Silmarils. Eönwë would not allow the slaying of the sons of Fëanor and let them go, each with a Silmaril.
But the Silmarils would not permit themselves to be held by the brothers and Maedhros cast himself, along with his Silmaril, into a chasm in the earth. Maglor cast his into the Great Sea and never again walked among the elves; forever after he wandered the shore singing in pain and regret.
Maglor in Quenya is Kanafinwe. "Strong voiced-finwe". Mother
name of Makalaure; the name is uncertain in meaning, thought to be a
poetic reference to his harping skills, "forging gold".
