Gwaihir is Sindarin and literally means Windlord. As such he is first mentioned in the first editions of
Quenta Simarillion as Gwaewar, the Lord of Winds. The original form of Gwaihir is Gwaehir or Gwaewhir. In Quenya equivalents would be
Waiwaher(u) or vaiwaher(u).
Possible name alternates:
(Gaming notes by Varda): Versions using suli- for wind were purposely
left out by the author to prevent gaming confusion with Manwe Sulimo's
character, which she now considers an error in retrospect. Versions of Gwaihir such as Windlord are rejected by
battle.net due to the word "lord", according to Gwaihir-(Valar).
